This morning, chaos reigned in the school. Nanami mentioned that you had fainted, yet the most frantic individual here was Gojo. Of course, who else? He has always been a drama queen. 

After a long conversation with Yaga and fooling Gakuganji at the entrance, he hurried to the hospital with Shoko, leaving Geto behind without a word. Poor that man; now he had a consequence if Yaga asked about Shoko and Gojo's absence. 

Gojo even left his phone in class and forgot to put on his shoes—what a scatterbrain!

Everything that unfolded was a consequence of your decision to run through the rain with Gojo to buy snacks and ice cream, ignoring Geto's warnings. Geto has probably had enough with you two.

But how could you tell? You can't change everything; you can't walk back to the past and fix anything. Because it was too late.

After locating your room, Gojo's booming voice rattled the door, drawing annoyed glances from the nurse and doctor due to its volume.

As he checked your condition, his hands roamed over every inch of your body, causing a little embarrassment as he grazed sensitive areas. His obliviousness to this fact highlighted his occasional stupidity, leaving you pondering whether he was truly innocent or simply dense.

"You're warm," he murmured, pressing his cheek against yours and then caressing them.

You can observe the worry etched on his face, despite his efforts to conceal it with a smile and loud chatter. Yet a hint of concern still lingers in his eyes.

"Naturally, I am, Gojo-kun."

"If Nanami hadn't found you in time, you might have drowned."

Indeed, you would nearly fall into the fish pond if Nanami hadn't found you. Fortunately, you were light enough to be carried, not as hefty as a sack of wheat.

"Gojo-kun," a chilly whisper cut through the silence.

"Yes?"

"You're... heavy. You're so heavy."

"Ah, my apologies."

Clearly, isn't it obvious? He leaned against your chest casually, like a newborn baby in a mother's embrace, seeking comfort from your sweet body while checking your heartbeat.

Could he feel the warmth emanating from your chest? Maybe. Did he find it comforting? No need to ask.

As Gojo shifted slightly, his gaze fell upon your disheveled visage, flushed like a crab, eyes watery with distress. In his eyes, you appeared vulnerable, so fragile like flowers—beautiful indeed.

"I find you endearing when you're like this, so fragile, like a flower," he remarked, his fingers grazing your cheeks as he chuckled.

"How amusing, Mr. Gojo."

Both of you chuckled, though you struggled to breathe. Yet, witnessing Gojo's concern for you left you engulfed in an odd sense of awkwardness, a feeling you couldn't quite shake off.

Remaining in his position, Gojo whispered, "They say, when we're this close, we might have been soulmates in a past life."

You laughed. "Soulmates in foolishness, perhaps. But what do you mean by 'close'?" You teased him, which left him flustered.

Amidst his laughter, Gojo turned away, hiding his shyness momentarily. "Speaking of faces, aren't we somewhat similar? Both of us are rather attractive; wouldn't you agree?"

"Are you stupid? Shut up. I don't want to hear you boast about your looks."

Gojo snapped his fingers, his laughter echoing. "How cruel. These lips of mine could make you melt with my kiss, you know."

"Oh, really?"

Silence hung in the air, punctuated only by the patter of raindrops and Shoko's laughter in the background.

"Hey..."

"What is it now, Gojo-kun?"

He leaned in closer, his forehead touching yours and his hand caressing your shoulder, before planting a gentle kiss on your cheek. "The medicine hasn't taken effect yet."

A mischievous smirk played on his lips; he loved teasing you, finding joy in making you blush or flustered with his prank. Strangely, you found yourself enjoying his playful demeanor, willingly becoming his target.

"Do you think medicine works like WiFi? Get off my face!"

"But you seem to enjoy my kisses, don't you? How about I try your lips next?"

"I'm not enjoying your kisses; I just—I can do nothing this time."

when i say dream is the most specialest little guy im 100% drop dead serious. i dont really know how to describe it w/out sounding like a parasocial freak. hes uplifting fanart and holding competitions for fic writers and wearing things people send to his p.o. box and the library of binders he keeps of fan letters because he doesnt want to throw them away. hes playing minecraft with people for hours and teaching parkour and giving advice and patience. hes a quiet mic and excited yells that peak it. hes “soulmates are people that fit” and “if we could teach robots to love would theirs be any different from ours” but hes also hyperliteral joke ruining and awkward humor. hes buying a fan a car and also calling us all morons in crab game lobbies. hes meticulously studying the algorithm but refusing to hire an editor because his videos are his art and whenever he uploads its like putting out a piece of himself. hes the most specialest little guy.

Right, walk with me as I dive into Canary Curse/SecretLife Martyn lore.

The current working theories are:

A: Jimmy is a sign of doom to his allies. Most of his allies have done poorly when partnered with him (Scott, Mumbo, Tango, Joel, and now Martyn), at least in reference to their usual abilities.

B: Watchers dislike Martyn. (And Jimmy)

These are valid in my mind and pair well with the phenomenon. However, I don't think it's exactly what is happening.

Which leads me to a mildly popular theory I'm still debating about (which will be my main point of this post):

Martyn is actively sacrificing himself for Jimmy.

It's not a poor theory, but I don't think it's accurate. For one, it doesn't fit wonderfully with Martyn's character (in game), which is untrustworthy, turncoat, and survivalist among other things.

But lets talk about why I DO like it first.

So this theory is similar to a different situation that happened in limited life. When Joel famously said after Jimmy died 'I was going to sacrifice myself for him, so he wouldn't go out first.' Most people have taken that to mean 'I was going to give him my time/let him perma-kill me.'

What's interesting about this is Joel is going about it in a very productive way. He is gathering time from other players, which he will then give to Jimmy to further Jimmy's odds. It could technically also imply that Joel doesn't plan to die instantly. If he has enough time he can share with Jimmy without full sacrifice.

Joel never got a chance to do this. Making the words tragic and full of broken hope, especially considering how he was then hunted by the majority of the server. Soon dying near where Jimmy fell.

Martyn's actions would be tragic in a very very different way.

This isn't a man being productive. this is a man actively self destroying. looking the universe in the face as he chooses to beat it just seconds before it can kill it's favorite punching bag.

I can not begin to describe how much this feels like a man clawing victory out of a race only he knows he's participating in. (Only he knows hes Winning)

Martyn is not Helping Jimmy's case. He isn't somehow giving him more time on earth or showering him in diamond armor until he's safe. This is not a story where the victory will come sweet, this is one where the victory is death. Not more time with friends and family. Death.

I genuinely love imagining that. Full stop.

However, I don't think it's the Reasoning behind Martyn's actions. (at least partly)

Martyn is known partly for Rebellion. Or at least, THINKING about rebellion. (see, that's an important detail)

Character Martyn always planned on betraying Ren. Always. He was going to mutiny, coup, whatever you want to call it, from day one.

In Double life he doesn't live with his soulmate. Actively, killing them at one point. In Last life he begins talking to Them, beginning his journey into becoming a Listener agent.

In Limited life he actively disobeys the unspoken rules of conduct. (Which, to be clear, I do not think actually EXIST). He steals peoples kills, he acts amicable only to knife people in the back seconds later, he killed people that are supposed to be his allies. In a game where everyone was loyal he he betrayed his closest ally to win the game.

Now. Here's where the Thinking comes into play.

Martyn is never actually rebelling.

Not in any meaningful way at least. It's like the crab in the bucket example, he's pulling other crabs down to get to the mouth of the bucket (winning) and in doing so he Thinks he's rebelling. But he's actually just playing into the Death Game.

throughout this whole thing the ONLY thing he can do to rebel would have been to simply not play the game.

(Which is technically true from a Meta stand point as well)

Martyn could have let himself die. Could have refused to kill. In doing so he is causing the most active form of rebellion against the people Watching, in that he is giving them nothing to watch. He is refusing to PLAY the Death Game.

Now. He didn't chose to do that...

But what if he did THIS time?

Martyn has succeeded his goal, he's won. He is the fourth winner of the life series. And guess what?

It got him SHIT.

An hour and a half of abject loneliness in an abandoned war torn server, all while he slowly waited to die. And after? No escape. No nothing, just right back into the Game.

It's a little like the universe is laughing at him.

"Oh, you thought this would make you Special? You thought this would beet us? This is exactly what we always wanted"

So that one goal Martyn's had since the beginning? Gone. Out the window. And if THAT option is gone, there's really only one left:

I don't think Martyn is trying to die first to save Jimmy. I think Martyn is trying to die first to beet the Watchers/Universe.

(After all. What's a bigger fuck you than breaking the most solid curse in the game?)

Whats ur fav jonjay moment?

Oh which one indeed? There's so many to choose from and I don't know control so I'll mention three though I just want to dump all the moments they share and go "EEEEEEEEEEEE LOOK LOOK".

The first time I went from "oh, they're cute" to "THEY ARE SOULMATES! I will kill for them!" was in #6 when Jon could not let go of Jay until the very last second when he was infiltrating STAR Labs.

This is their entire relationship dynamic in one image. Jay being reckless because of his powers and trying to let Jon rest and just be, Jon knowing that little can hurt Jay and still reaching, chasing, wanting to protect him because it's just what he wants to do.

2. And then #11, I can't pinpoint the exact moment but Jon refusing to listen to Bruce, Jay waiting by the window and leaving Jon messages to check on him, their entire conversation after Jon asks for clarification about the possible terrorist thing. It's so GOOD(I had Reinaeiry's cover of Britney Spears's Toxic, the OG Criminal, and Taylor Swift's Don't Blame Me + Death By a Thousand Cuts on repeat preparing for the angst I had a T.Swift phase for a hot second sorry).

3. There's also the perfect set of panels in #14 where Jon's terrified holding Jay, all suited up, and this is Superman. Superman who stopped a giant crab monster, relocated a bridge, put out a forest fire. And he's terrified for this one boy who he loves and he's asking him to drop him right into danger where Superman cannot help. Jay placing a hand over his heart, knowing Jon can't let go, it's asking too much of him he's terrible at letting go. So he does it for him, and HIS HAND PHASES THROUGH JON'S FUCKING HEART HEY WHAT THE FUCK???

MADNESS. I will never recover they popped off on this from diaolgue, to line art to colors. Everything. It breaks my heart, it's so sad but also romantic and good ;_; Jon who can't let go and Jay who will even if it's going to absolutely hurt and put him danger because he doesn't want Jon to hurt.

sooooo my all-time fav book is Invisible Cites by Italo Calvino!! i am absolutely obsessed with the way he describes physical places and emotions, the metaphors and imagery and the way he describes the feeling a place or person can give you without actually describing it at all? it's both dreamlike and ethereal and grounded and real at the same time, and i just....love it so much. here's one of my favorite bits from the book:

Jungkook now had a row of plant cuttings in shot glasses lining the window next to his bed. During his last video chat with Seoyeon they discussed names for the cuttings.

He was extra excited when he saw Namjoon for the first time in days, to let him know what they’d come up with.

Namjoon froze when he saw Jungkook.

“Hyung! Hyung!” Jungkook beamed at him. “I’m so glad I chose the closing shift today—I haven’t seen you in ages.”

“No, I…” Namjoon cleared his throat. “It’s nice to see you too. Is Yoongi-hyung around?”

Jungkook nodded. “He’s in back—do you want me to get him?”

“No! I’ll go. I have, ah, something I wanted to mention to him. I’ll be… just a second.” Namjoon inched out of the room in an awkward sort of crab walk. Jungkook frowned. Was Namjoon lying? He didn’t actually seem happy to see him. Jungkook’s chest tightened. He rubbed it and then shrugged, going back to sweeping the floor. It was a hot summer’s night, so his bangs were sticking to his forehead as sweat dripped into his eyes. He groaned. Maybe he should ask Jin for one of the hair clips he used to keep his hair out of the way while preparing food?

Yoongi burst out of the curtain at a faster speed than Jungkook had ever seen him move.

“Jungkook-ah?”

“Hmm?”

“Are you…?” Yoongi paused, brow furrowed as he looked him over, sniffing. “You’re in pre-heat.” Jungkook realized what all the sweating meant. He touched his neck, feeling his skin smooth instead of the tackiness of his scent blocker. He whined in embarrassment. Yoongi’s gaze softened. “It’s fine. Hyung’s got you.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a stick of roll-on scent blocker.

Jungkook swallowed the burst of affection that wanted to spill from his lips. “Thanks,” he muttered instead. Yoongi placed it on the counter. Jungkook walked up to get it. He applied it carefully, on both his neck and his wrists. “I hope I didn’t make Namjoon-hyung too uncomfortable.” Namjoon must not like the scent of his pre-heat. That’s why he left the room so awkwardly.

Yoongi snorted. “He’s a big boy. He can handle a little pre-heat scent,” he said. Jungkook nodded woodenly. He moved to start sweeping again. “Jungkook-ah.” Jungkook turned to look at him. “You’re free to go early, if you like.” Jungkook shrugged. “And you don’t have to come in tomorrow.”

“What?” Jungkook stared at him. “Hyung, don’t fire me—I can work hard, even if I’m in pre-heat!”

“Whoa, slow down, Jungkookie. I’m not firing you.” Yoongi looked just as shocked as Jungkook felt. “I’m just reminding you of the clause in your contract.” Jungkook squinting at him. “You’re entitled to paid heat leave, which includes a few days of pre-heat. You’re free to work during pre-heat if you’re comfortable doing so, but you shouldn’t feel required too.”

“Seriously?”

“Seriously.” Yoongi raised an eyebrow at him. “Did you seriously not read the contract before signing it?”

Jungkook laughed sheepishly. “I was just so excited to get the job I kind of sped through it.”

Yoongi clicked his tongue. “Reckless. We could be taking advantage of you.”

“Hyungduel would never,” Jungkook disagreed. Yoongi smiled slightly.

“Yeah, well… think about not coming to work, then.”

Jungkook did come into work the next day, but left early again when he sweat through his scent blocker again. Yoongi gave him his again and told him to keep it this time.

“It’s a fairly sweat proof brand, Jiminie’s a dancer and he swears by it,” Yoongi told him.

Jungkook put the scent blocker stick next to the plants by the window. If he popped his head out of his nest to smile at them ever so often, that was no one’s business but his own.

Several days later, Jungkook was in full heat. If he’d thought the sweating was bad before, he must’ve been mistaken.

“Hyung…” He whined in a voice message to Junghyun. “The air feels like soup. I think I’m dying… also, now I want to eat soup. Hyung… come make me soup.”

After a few minutes, his brain caught up to him.

“Hyung, I’m not really dying, please don’t come running all the way to Seoul cause my heat-addled brain is melting.”

His phone buzzed. Jungkook squinted at the screen.

JK, I think you meant to message someone else, but nevertheless, I do have soup.

Tell me your address if you want it.

Jungkook let out a high pitched scream and threw his phone across the room. How the fuck had managed to text Seokjin instead of Junghyun? After a few minutes of breathing rapidly, Jungkook noticed his phone buzzing again. Curiosity got the better of him. He rolled out of bed and crawled over to his phone. Every movement hurt.

Wait, this was weird, wasn’t it?

Sorry. I shouldn’t have offered you soup.

Oh Jin. Jungkook melted in another way.

Not weird at all, he texted back. I was just surprised. After a few minutes of bitting his lip and rolling around the floor in indecision, he finally texted, What kind of soup?

Kimchi Jigae, it’s Jimin’s comfort food. He had a bad day today, so I made a lot. Would you like some?

Jungkook felt a small flash of jealousy at the idea of Jimin, someone he had barely met once, being surrounded by comfort on a bad day, while Jungkook was lying on a the floor alone during his heat. Then he immediately felt bad for thinking that about Jimin, who had seemed kind and helpful the one time they met.

Sorry he isn’t feeling well. Is there anything I can do to help? If you give me soup, will he still have enough?

Very sweet of you. There’s plenty of soup for everyone. Just focus on resting during your heat.

Can I have soup, please? Jungkook texted his address.

I’ll be there ASAP.

Jungkook fell asleep on the floor, holding his phone waiting for Jin. He woke when it buzzed.

I’m leaving the goods outside the door. Do you want anything else while I’m here?

No thanks. Thank you soooooo much for the soup.

Please. Like, your cooking could be bad. Jungkook smiled, imagining how red his ears must be getting.

He walked to the door, there were two bags. One had two containers of soup in it. Jungkook immediately poured some into a bowl and started heating it up. The other bag was labeled FROM JIMIN AND YOONGI. There was a handwritten note, which must be from Jimin, because it didn’t look like Yoongi’s handwriting.

Heats suck. Hopefully these things will help yours suck a little less.

Instead there were heat packs, ice packs, several kinds of candies and chips, wet wipes, and a blanket that looked hand knitted.

Jungkook stared at the blanket for what felt like a lifetime, jumping when the microwave beeped. He sat at the table to drink the soup, nearly crying at how good it tasted, and then took the heat care package into his nest with him. The blanket he carefully wove into the wall of the nest, where he could stare at it and run his fingers over it. It was unscented, which Jungkook was surprised disappointed him. Still, a handmade blanket during his heat, that was almost like a courting gift, wasn’t it? But no, why would they be courting someone like him? Jimin had only met him once, and Yoongi… Yoongi had plenty of other mates to love. There was no reason to go after Jungkook.

When Jungkook got back to work after his heat break, Namjoon was visiting again. It was early morning, before they’d even opened yet, and Hoseok was covering his face in kisses, rubbing his chest like it was granting him good luck. Namjoon’s dimples were on full display as he wrapped his arms around his mate.

Jealousy squirmed in Jungkook’s stomach, although he wasn’t sure which one he was jealous of. It wasn’t that he wanted to pull them apart—they looked beautiful together. He just wanted…

“Jungkookie!” Hoseok beamed when he saw him, reaching to pull him into the hug. Oh. This was much better. Jungkook had reasons for not wanting to be physically close with people, but he couldn’t deny the warmth coming off the two of them felt heavenly. “Guess what?” Jungkook made a questioning noise. “Namjoonie made a deal with the supplier we’ve been having trouble with—now Jin-hyung can work on products with higher quality chocolate!”

“That’s great!” Jungkook hadn’t even known they’ve been having trouble with a supplier, but found himself easily caught up in Hoseok’s excitement.

“We should celebrate! Tonight! Even Jiminie has the night off—“

“Oh, that’s okay,” Namjoon said. “Jimin probably wants to use his free time to practice. We don’t need to celebrate—“

“Nonsense!” Hoseok said. “Jimin’s been working too hard recently. He could use an actual break. And you worked hard on this deal too, we should celebrate! I’ll take care of everything, you just get yourself back here tonight.”

“Well, okay, then,” Namjoon acquiesced.

Throughout the day, Hoseok zipped in and out of the room, working on his plans for the party.

“I’m so disappointed I can’t come,” Jiwoo grumbled as they chatted in the locker room.

“Huh, why not?” Jungkook wondered. “I thought you finished up your latest class.”

“Yes, well…” Jiwoo flushed. “Don’t go spreading this around, cause we’re still in early stages, but… I’m kind of, sort of being courted by a pack. I have a date tonight.”

“Wow!” Jungkook’s eyes widened. “Congrats, friend” Jiwoo pushed his shoulder.

“Shut up. I told you, I’m still not sure…” She bit her lip. “I’ve never been courted before. This is all so new to me.”

“I hope it goes well,” Jungkook said, stomach clenching at the thought it might not. Jiwoo was sweet and kind, she deserved mates who treated her well. “Text me if anything goes wrong, okay? I’ll come running.”

Jiwoo smiled softly. “I’m sure you would. But you could stand to focus a little on yourself too, you know.”

Jungkook’s brow furrowed. “What d’you mean?”

Jiwoo considered him. “Hmm. Well, if you haven’t started that conversation with them yet, I’m not starting it for you.”

“Jiwoo…” Jungkook whined, pulling on her arm. She shook her head.

“Go home and rest, and then come back and enjoy yourself at the party, I’m sure you’ll figure it out sooner than later.”

At home, Jungkook spoke with his brother about plans for Chuseok. The thick summer air was fading into a cool autumn breeze. Even though they did the same thing every year, somehow, this year felt different. Jungkook was in less of a rush to go back to his hometown. Seokjin was developing white chocolate moon shaped cookies. Jungkook was enjoying taste testing them.

“If you’re happy where you are right now, you don’t have to come,” Junhyun said. “I can do the cooking and cleaning by myself. Mom and dad would want you to enjoy your life.”

Jungkook shook his head. “I miss you guys. I’ll come home and help. I’ll see if Jin-hyung can give me extra cookies to share with Seoyeonie.”

“Bring me something that isn’t white chocolate,” Junghyun said, his nose wrinkling.

The cafe was decorated with balloons, streamers, and a sparkly banner that spelled out Namjoon’s name.

There was a wide variety of foods, both sweet and savory on the counter, including a large plate of moon cookies.

“I think they’re almost done,” Seokjin said, smiling in amusement as Jungkook scarfed down three in a row. “All I need now is a sign to advertise them.”

“Say no more!” Jungkook said, holding up his hand. “Just give me a piece of paper and a pen.”

“Sure.” Seokjin got it for him.

Jungkook sat quietly, sketching out the different phases of the moon. The shading was difficult to get right. He was so focused, he didn’t even notice Seokjin leaving.

“That’s beautiful,” someone said in a gasp. Jungkook looked up and saw the handsome stranger from outside the club, Jimin.

“That would look so pretty on your skin,” Taehyung said from behind him. Jungkook looked at him. “Jimin’s thinking of getting a tattoo.”

“Taetae said you did your own.” Jimin smiled hesitantly. “Could I see?” Jungkook wiggled from side to side, thinking about it. He nodded and pulled off his sweater. “So cool.” Jimin reached out. Things were in the works here and someone could have just rushed it and it blew up in their face causing the other to walk away from them. It was too much for the other to handle. It was getting out of hand.

Currently, they have a little bit of an ego. May be too much pride. They are thinking about whether or not they should apologize. 😊 Dark Carnivals: Modern Horrors and the Origins of American Empire (W. Scott Poole, author; Enrique McGavin, narrator) - interesting, edifying, depressing. Not as much discusssion of the films as I expected/would have liked - like 70% rundown of USian imperial activities of the last two centuries, 30% horror/scifi film discussion. [In hindsight, should have read this in text, as there were passages I really wanted to highlight/quote and the narration was…weird. Voice sound & tone was OK but there were lots of bizarre pauses. Sometimes when reading a quotes from a notable figure, the narrator did do some very credible imitations of Clinton & Reagan.]
