Non Blood Siblings VS Childhood Friends in Otome Games.

Otome fandom has an…odd relationship when it comes to Non blood-related siblings and childhood friends; People who like the former insist that since the characters aren’t related, it’s okay for them to date, while others who don’t like the latter insist that the characters are ‘basically related’ since they were around each other growing up. As someone who is biased to the childhood friends to lovers trope, I’m using my agenda to tell unwilling fans the differences between the two, as well as explain general tropes and how to spot intentional and unintentional incest.

The main difference between non-blood related siblings and childhood friends is that childhood friends grow up around each other, whether they are neighbors, their parents are friends themselves, they meet each other at the same school, etc. They end up meeting each other at a young age at some point and remain friends throughout their whole life.

Non-blood siblings are siblings who are part of the same family either through adoption or a remarriage from the parents, making them step-siblings.

People who don’t like the childhood friends to lovers trope insist that they’re basically siblings since they grew up together for a long time. That’s a pretty sloppy conclusion to come to considering that they not only aren’t raised by the same parents, but the closest that childhood friends are like siblings is if they both considered themselves like siblings, which is very different from two people actually BEING related. Two people who are childhood friends are just that, friends. Friends can form many different bonds depending on how they view each other, whether that be platonic or romantic if they decide to date, and they can also be physically affectionate or choose to show their love through words.

People who defend romantic relationships between non blood-related siblings (or otherwise) say that since there is no blood relation, and, in some cases, have only become sibling rather quickly in their lifetime, then it isn’t an issue. However, regardless of blood relation, there is typically a reason why incest is looked down upon. Incest is often considered abuse on the part of the instigator since they essentially force their romantic and/or sexual feelings onto their siblings, which can cause A LOT of mental damage onto the other sibling. I’m admittedly not as knowledgeable on the effects of incest, but from what I see from otome games, older and younger brothers who aren’t related use that fact to convince their sister why they should date, regardless of how said sister feels about the issue.

There are a few categories regarding childhood friends and non-blood relatives in otome games that cover and occasionally blur the two tropes.

Childhood friends to lovers:

The best romance trope and I’LL FIGHT YOU ON IT! In most otome games, at least one love interest will already have a crush on the main character due to knowing each other for a long time. It’s a trope that’s hard to get wrong, however…

Childhood friends who view each other as siblings:

Two childhood friends where one or both of them view each other like siblings. I’m personally not fond of this variation, but I can see why it’s a thing, since it makes for an interesting development between the two characters. Kagiha from Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly and Toma from Amnesia Memories come to mind. Speaking of them…

Controlling childhood friends:

While not as common, the childhood friend, usually the male love interest, uses the fact that him and the main character knew each other for a long time as an excuse to be as controlling and possessive to the MC, even if they have other childhood friends. Toma is an infamous example, Kagiha’s whole ordeal is that he knowingly works for the game’s antagonist to make sure Beniyuri is safe, even of it’s to both of their own detriment, and Tomose Banjo from Charade Maniacs forces himself onto Hiyori and doesn’t allow her to decide against his romantic feelings. Bad writers. Bad!

“Childhood friends”:

This section refers to characters who met the MC when they were teens/adults while she was a child (or vice versa), thereby taking them out of the equation from childhood friends. Mysir and Ill from Cafe Encante count, as well as a majority of the love interests from Jooubachi no Oubou. For a non immortal example, Auguste Muller and Victor Friedrich from Edel Blume are this trope.

Non blood-related siblings:

Pretty self-explanatory. I didn’t add blood-related siblings and adjacent onto this since any normal person’s gag reflex will go into overdrive from blood-relatives being in a romantic relationship.

Step-siblings:

Siblings who are related through their respective parents marrying each other. Outside of the infamous Brothers Conflict series, a majority of Rejet’s siblings fall into this trope.

Adoptive siblings:

Siblings who are adopted into a family that the main character is a part of and vice-versa. Some examples are Gekkamaru and Kuroyki from Nightshade, Ikuto Sonomura from Kuro to Kin no Akanai Kagi, and Gretel from Taisho x Alice.

Accidental incest:

This trope occurs where the media intended for two characters to be childhood friends, but they accidentally made them siblings by having them be raised together from the same parental figure(s). The most infamous example of this is Catra and Adora from She-Ra and the Princess of Power, to the point where some of the crew members thought they were sisters. Otome game examples are Chouchi and Ryubi from Juza Engi and Alice/Alistair from Taisho x Alice. Speaking of…

Taisho x Alice:

This game has it’s own section due to the circumstances of Alistair’s childhood. His mother died and was taken in by Arisa’s parents, but because they were often out of the house, Arisu’s older brother, Ryoushi, became his legal guardian and psychiatrist. This led to Alistair creating the ‘Gretel’ personality, who acts as Arisu’s younger brother. So, the creators are aware they created accidental incest, but stuck with it anyways? Okay…

Parental figures/Guardians:

These are non blood-related parental figures who helped raised the main characters at some point in their adolescence. Two standout examples are Shiratsuyu no Kai, which has Tsuyuha Ichikawa’s legal guardian Shin Nakamachi, and Princess Nightmare, where Little Dracula not only has adopted brother Radou Dracula, but also has adopted FATHER Vlad Dracula. YES, HE’S A LOVE INTEREST AND THEY GET MARRIED IN HIS GOOD ENDING! WTF KARIN ENTERTAINMENT! Speaking of Karin, a Boys Love example is Setsuna Aoi from Omega Vampire, who is Keiichi Moriya’s legal guardian.

Love interests who act like family members:

Non childhood friends who at one point in the story acts like a sibling figure or a parental figure to hide their true feelings. While I could maybe, not really, understand childhood friends who do this, I have a hard time doing this with two characters who met for a relatively recent amount of time. Examples include Caramia from Ozmafia, Arisu and Alice from Taisho x Alice, Aiji Yanagi from Collar x Malice, and Takumi Mishiro from Storm Lover. A mainstream example is Riley from Girl Meets World trying to enforce a sibling-like relationship with Lucas to ignore her still romantic feelings for him for Maya’s sake.

Twists:

These are plot twists that reveal that the seemingly blood siblings actually have no blood relation. Examples are Wabisuke Kaneda from Gekka Ryouran Romance, Yatsukami Hanate from 7'sCarlet, and Shizuku Minase/Black Rabbit from Trick or Alice. Speaking of which…

Trick or Alice:

Has it’s own section for reasons I’ll explain. So, the Back Rabbit’s age is unknown, but considering he’s immortal and implied to be Lewis Carol, despite physically looking like a teenager, I’m assuming he’s an adult. Regardless, when the Black Rabbit took Alice to a pocket dimension to keep her safe from the queen’s wrath, he pretended to be her brother to not only stay by her side, but to also subside his romantic feelings for her, which is a BIZARRE way to involve an incest route. If he wasn’t Lewis Carol, I would’ve considered them to originally be childhood friends, but with the implication that he is the author, it’s ANOTHER layer of gross considering he’s not only a real person, but the Mad Hatter/Chrono is his best friend, who is physically an adult, and…God, Trick or Alice is fucking weird.

Period Cube:

Has it’s own section since Kazuha’s older brother, Shiki, is not given a direct answer as to whether he’s blood-related or not, but considering their physical similarities, I personally consider them to be blood-related. Regardless of blood-relation or not, it’s still gross.

In short, childhood friends are adorable and incest is gross and no one can convince me otherwise.

The rosettes in his hair can be as random as you want, as long as they are not on his raccoon tails/front of his hair. Typically there is a heart-shaped one somewhere, but it can be anywhere as long as it is present. His rosettes follow your heart. Preferably at least five rosettes plus the heart-shaped one.

Vinny dresses in a very feminine way and almost never wears pants. Skirts, high-waisted shorts, any panties or bikini bottoms, and things of this nature are okay to draw him in. He'll wear dresses, net tops, bodysuits, and crop tops mostly. However, he will wear his lovers' clothes at any time of day, or t-shirts he either gets from them or because they're funny to bed. Even his classy stuff is very revealing and sexual. part 1 of my inevitable millions of rants about tanizaki because hhh i love him.

so tanizaki is so often burnt down to just his relationship with his sister, and yes its weird and all, but he is so much more than that as a character.

tanizaki has expressed multiple times that hes uncomfortable with naomis behavior and anytime he asks to her to stop hell be ignored in a teasing way or mildly threatened.

i know many people are under the impression that they may actually not be related based on some of the works of the irl tanizaki, but this is mostly discussing my opinions on if they are infact related

tanizaki and naomi are both young and live alone together. with naomi still being in school, its pretty safe to say that their parents are out of the picture for some reason.

because of the lack of parents in the picture, its very common for siblings to become close. obviously not as close as they are, but i believe that to be a part of naomi being young, and still maturing.

now a big thing i hear people say is that if tanizaki didnt like it, why doesnt he stop her or why does he still care so much about her? and my answer to that is because hes a naturally timid character and shes probably the only family he has left.

hes probably under the assumption that getting her to stop would mean straining his relationship with what could be his only living or present family member.

thats another thing that pulls into his protective nature. despite the fact that hes timid and underestimates himself, hes extremely powerful and protective of those he loves. that primal instinct to protect fueled with her being not only his only family, but also his little sister gives him such a reason to get so angry when shes hurt.

I think saying that Ralsei is exactly the same as Asriel because they are foils is reductive and takes away from his character development. I don't ship Ralsei and Kris, but I think in a hypothetical situation where they were to get together, I think it would be a good way to separate Ralsei from just being a copy of Asriel. it would give him some agency in his existence if that makes sense

I don’t think…. this would not the best way to prove that Ralsei is his own person aside from Asriel, there are millions of different ways to prove that, I don’t think dating Asriel’s sibling would be… great, I don’t want to see that.
