My D&Derivative [Alignment]

Part I

Instead of the normal 3x3 grid, I have this, a circle that implies a morality system that loops back in on itself. The primary "pure" alignments are the labelled colors there along the cardinal points, Blue, Green, Red and Purple, roughly coordinating with Good, Neutral, Evil and Complicated. However, I'll be sticking with the color names, as the normal alignment names are rather loaded. Using color names lets me control the narrative. There are no truly "in-between" alignments, but each "pure" alignment has a pair of border alignments: Cyan(<-Blue->)Indigo, Lavender(<-Purple->)Rose, Pink(<-Red->)Orange & Yellow(<-Green->)Aqua.

The colored labels in the corner are the ends of axis used for the alignment system that when mapped out may form a 2x2 grid turned on its side. I preferred a circle, because it accomplished a few things. I thought it was prettier and more unique compared to the grid. I thought it made the idea of each alignment blending into one another easier to visualize, going around in a circle. It brough home an idea that there is no middle ground in the center of an empty circle, you have to pick a side or, more succinctly, a point at the edge of this circle.

Selfless vs Selfish represent motivations, goals and drives, are you trying to broadly help all others or are you only interested in helping you and yours. Competence, capability and comprehension aren't accounted for in this system: It's broadly assumed that the goals you are pursuing are being achieved and your purported selflessness or lack thereof isn't just wishful thinking.

Callous vs Careful isn't disengaged from motivation but it is concerned more with action. Another if somewhat extreme way to put it is Maximizing Harm vs Minimizing Harm. Though the exact form that will take will differ, especially with "Careful", on whether you mean to help others beyond your own connections or just help yourself and your own. If you're of a Callous variety, someone who carelessly or purposefully leaves pain and suffering in your wake, whether your intentions were good or were selfish might be purely academic, or they might make all the difference.

When you go about trying to selflessly help others, do you care about collateral? Are you the type to ruthlessly slaughter every bandit and bandit-adjacent person in the forest to keep a region full of strangers safe? When you capture the slavers' collaborator, do you skip straight to torture to get him to tell you where the children are? What awful things are you willing to do some people to help some other people? And do you do it all because you genuinely trying help, genuinely believe this evil will result in a better good for the world?

While the other alignments can be self-explanatory, the Purple alignment can be harder to pin down but hopefully the above question-prompts help sell the mindset. It should be not outside the realm of possibility for a Blue aligned and Purple aligned character to work together towards a common goal, possibly even operate in the same group long term, albeit with some friction. They both want to help people.

Purple and Red might work together for a little while, if Red can focus on hurting the right people and not attract Purple's ire. Otherwise, Red is exactly the sort of person Purple is looking to hurt. Green and Purple are exact opposites and possibly have the most friction, the least reason to interact. At best, Purple might think of Green as a bystander and, at worst, a small minded petty cowards. Green would consider Purple to be a sanctimonious lunatic who's great crusade is rivalled only by the great body count that crusade leaves behind.

Watched ‘Charades’ - The Vulcan/Human stuff wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be tbh, very enjoyable episode! Love T’Pring no notes for T’Pring you were so sweet the whole time. Her holding his hand and subtly giving him tips to make the ritual go smoothly...AAA!! Christine/Spock things sooo boring on their own but as angst for T’Pring? Very good. She wasn’t even gone a DAY before they made out. DUMP! HIS! ASS <3 The phone operator please-hold aliens were very cute to me, I liked them! Also Amanda & T’Pring’s dad should chill together, that’s good vibes all around. Also it introduced the concept of a sacred Vulcan familial roast sesh which is honestly so fucking funny and I adore it. Five minutes on the clock to devastate your future son-in-law, better make it count.

My D&Derivative [Goblins]

Goblins, The Spindly Ones

The second of the Small Folk, and the first of the Green Skins. Universally, they are nearly obligate carnivores, with mouths full of fangs, and a combination of claws and muscles and tails that make them adept climbers, a trait shared with Elves.

They are also called the Gods' Mistakes, the Forsaken Ones, for it is held by many that they were cast-offs, never meant to be. This is never an opinion held by anyone in actual communication with the gods, however indistinct, but this disdain for the race persists without good reason.

In some of the more backwards and cruel places, they are hunted like vermin still. Here, they either flee to greener pastures, go into hiding, sell their services to whomever will protect them or begin fighting back in protracted, multi-generational guerilla warfare. Some have even carved out little havens and small nations of their own, surrounded on all sides by enemies. In most places, however, they are accepted with bloodshed, if somewhat looked down upon. City Goblins, the Ones With Orders 

The breed of goblins often associated with being minions of unsavory characters. City goblins desire orders and rules, and are incredibly hierarchical creatures. Most gravitate to the bottom of these hierarchies, acting as the willing helpers and servants of others. The strong willed, however, who rise to the top, expect total obedience, though these sorts gravitate towards ruling over others of their own kind who will fall in line.

In places where they have integrated without a problem, they make upstanding, law-abiding citizens. Bigger, stronger, than other goblins, easily the match of rock gnomes but with whip cord muscles over lanky frames as opposed to bulky. They make excellent soldiers and together may form mercenary companies, the kind that hold strictly to codes of conduct.

In places where goblins are not accepted, they will serve anyone who will grant them the grace to live, leading to some very unsavory masters.

Wild Goblins, the Ones Without Control 

A breed of goblins that dwell in those places that only adventurers dare to walk, outside the confines of walls or laws. Here, they laugh and dance and sing and set fire to things and lay traps for game and amusement. They are the sort to terrorize countrysides when provoked by constant pogroms. More likely, when left alone, they are peaceful if not exactly quiet neighbors. The more tractable tribes may even agree to ad hoc defense pacts, turning border marches into unpassable and deadly no-man's lands that only the goblins may reside in.

The more adventurous sort, which makes up nearly half the late adolescents and many of the adults, travel the world to see new sights, take exciting risks and collect shiny baubles. For this reason, wild goblins are some of the most eager adventurers. The goal is to make it back home with all of their knick-knacks and throw them into a communal pile of junk, set in a place of honor at the center of every village. Some of these junk piles out in the middle of nowhere contain rare magical artifacts places alongside shards of broken, colored glass and treated with the same awe.

Tunnel Goblins, the Ones Within Shadows

They and the mist elves are cousins of spirit while being neighbors to the dark elves and deep gnomes. Living in the deepest shadows in the most winding tunnels, their minds are ones ruled by an aching anxiety and pressing need not to be seen, not much even by each other. Privacy is greatly respected and even their poorest communities, which is most of them, will have each goblin dig his own little hole to hide away in. They are the sort that when opinions towards their kind turn sour to simply melt away, if people ever knew they were there in the first place. On the other hand, there are stories where the tunnel goblins were continuously provoked until they struck back, an endless tide of grey-green, jagged teeth and the empty whites unique to this breed, pouring out of every shadow and every hole.

Those on the surface often find dark, confined places to sleep, like basements or attics, sometimes other people's if they judge them to be unused. Even other goblins, especially city goblins, view them as a nuisance or, at worst, intelligent vermin if they are particularly myopic. For those that choose to live on the surface, for a given value of choice, they may find themselves pushed to the edge of society more often than even other goblins. That's not always so bad, they prefer the solitude most of the time, and their natural inclinations means they might sell their services as thieves or assassins.

My work has an address check that takes info from Google maps right and trying to check anyone outside of continental Europe is Hell. Like even Ireland, what do you mean there is no number? Also as a side note you really learn about colonialism from like, the languages people speak and how the addresses are formatted.

What I interact with most is the ways that danish addresses get messed up people unfamiliar with them and/or by software not designed for our address syntax

Addresses for apartments are typically structured like

[STREET NAME] [STREET NUMBER], [FLOOR] [SIDE OF THE STAIRCASE]

so something like "Eksempelgade 2, 1. TV"

Meaning "On Eksempelgade number 2, on the first floor, the door to the left"

Which is ofc extremely intuitive to me but when I look at foreign adresses more complicated than just a street name and number, I definitely feel lost XD

What tends to get messed up for danish adresses is the order of the numbers, which makes it dififcult to tell which is the street and which is the floor, or maybe the numbers being misinterpreted as one number rather than two distinct ones (21 rather than 2 and 1st, in the example above)

Which, while obviously different countries have different types of housing with different structures and thus different typical adresses, if there was a universally agreed upon syntax for addresses, you at least wouldn't run into the problem of the order being mangled and thus distorting the inteded meaning!

I'm sure practically every country has something about their addresses that is often misinterpreted by foreigners/software not designed for their types of addresses
