I have this insane idea for a Merlin fanfiction and I need y'all to tell me if you'd read it!

So basically it's a Modern merthur au + modern royalty. Imagine this.

Gwaine and Merlin are detectives of the FBI. One day they get a tip from their friends in the royal palace, Sir Elyan and Sir Leon, that the huge drug lord, that has been on the streets for weeks which Merlin and Gwaine have been busting their asses to find the identity of, is Uther Pendragon. Camalot's own king.

Now that they have a suspect they only need to find a way to prove it. They decided to go undercover. It won't be too hard for them to make up a backstory since Gwaine is technically nobility, but they do need some kind of entrance.

That's why they have Guinevere Blacksmith. Gwen worked with them in the force a couple of years beforehand, but she had to quit because someone was threatening her father so she had to go off the grid for a while, Gwen settled in Camalot with her younger brother Elyan, her dad and her best and oldest friend Leon. She became a servant and has been trying to keep a low profile ever since until she could make sure her family was safe.

Gwen introduced them to Sir Lancelot, Gwen's fiance who spent some time with the druids growing up and knows about;

1. Gwen's time in the FBI, 2. Merlin's magic. she said Merlin could go undercover as Lancelot's partner and get into the banquet Uther is throwing as his plus one.

The only problem? He has to be a woman for that.

They can't take anyone else, they decided, since Merlin and Gwaine know this case better than anyone else, and they don't want to risk Gwen in any way.

So Merlin turns himself into Mary - Sir Lancelot's 'girlfriend', the daughter of Sir Lot and Lady Morgan of Caerleon and Gwaine's 'sister'.

But what happens when Lancalot gets injured three nights before the banquet? They can't send Merlin alone without an explanation! It's too dangerous. And Gwaine is refusing to be around some 'stuck up noblemen'.

So Gwen offers her other best friend instead, since she can't offer Leon who has to stay behind and take care of Lancelot, another knight of camalot. Prince Arthur Pendragon of Camelot. Of course.

20: Favorite knight. I'm a bit of a basic bitch here. Gwaine. Followed by Lancelot 27: Modern Merlin headcannons, It depends on if you mean Modern AU. If its Arthur returns you are going to start getting a SHIT load of them come april with a series of long fics. I'm working on the third in the series right now. They will be published in order of being writen however which means 213 in order but 2 and 1 can be read just fine in any order. If we are talking Modern AU. Merlin is a new age wicca practicing Concervationist adviser type of job person in my head. Arthur is son of A really rich CEO and when he takes over from his dad becomes basically the one CEO on the planet who pays their people enough and uses their wealth to help the world along with living confterbly.

Meanwhile Merlin helps him make the company totally green too (they likely met when uther was in charge) And they fall in love. Morgana is the estranged daughter of Uther who was peeved at how the company was treating people and the enviorment and struck out on her own. Possibly exposing some of the company's corruption as a whistleblower. Once Arthur takes charge and makes changes they become close again. Morgana Is with Gwen who was her childhood friend turned lover. I haven't figured out all of Gwen's role yet. Avalon12 au

Okay I thought a lot of thoughts about the lore so here's a bit of a summary. Small disclaimer none of this is realistic I'm pulling this out of my ass and thin air

Avalon is the name of one of the biggest military suppliers founded by Uther and several other ex-soldiers (Olaf and others). Tech, ammunition, research, they do it all. Currently the majority of the company is legally owned and run by Morgana

Avalon12 isn't only 12 people. It's a network of independent, international contractors funded, trained and sustained by Uther and co themselves. That's the part of Avalon's business Morgana has no say or hand in. The hirable squad usually contains 12 troops, 6 of them rotating after each mission to ensure safety and anonymity, and 6 being permanent members (bravo team). They are mostly hired for high-risk political missions that could spark international conflicts if executed by any of the national armed forces

Bravo team is the knights under Arthur's command. They're ghosts, people who don't exist in the eye of government — officially, Uther Pendragon lost his son to an accident years ago. Arthur was raised as a war weapon and is the only one on the team who still goes by his birth name to keep up the arthurian morale and bravado. Lancelot, Gwaine, Percival, Elyan and Leon initially lived their lives under different names but those personas got consensually wiped out once they replaced the original bravo team (Leon is the only one who didn't start under Arthur's command)

Morgana fucking hates Uther. She bonds with Gwen after her dad dies and Elyan, driven by grief, accepts the offer to join Arthur's team and almost gets permanently separated from his sister due circumstances. Morgana makes Gwen her assistant, goes against Uther for the first time and gives Gwen and Elyan means of regular, stable contact. She wants to take over Avalon12 and end it for both Gwen and Arthur. At the start of plot, her and Gwen are engaged

Magic is a completely unknown force. It only starts being explored at the time this au starts unfolding, leading to a slow uprising of magicals as well as unofficial/undocumented experiments the governments are aware of but, so far, too uninformed and powerless to make the matter public

Merlin and his family have magic in their lineage. Merlin serves in Intelligence corps, being an interpreter, researcher and field scientist. Kilgharrah is a major general and a sorcerer himself, although Merlin, who works almost directly under him, doesn't know it. Kilgharrah knows about Merlin's power and keeps him close for that reason

So I blinked, and suddenly we are a month down! Anyone want to explain how that happened?

In February, 28 amazing participants created 50 glorious fills, 47 of which are listed for your delight below (as part of our new-and-improved fill submission form, we're now allowing people to opt out of us linking their work on tumblr, hence there being some not included here).

Of those 47 fills, 41 are fics, three are artworks, and then there's a single gif, a podfic, and an overachieving fic/moodboard combo!

How about ships? Well, we're starting out unusual this year, with more shipless works than Merlin/Arthur ones. Sure, with 19 gen works and 18 merthur ones, it's not a big difference, but it feels noteworthy anyway. In terms of the rarer pairings, we've got a few that show up pretty often on the bingo round ups (Gwen/Morgana and Merlin/Lancelot with two, Merlin/Gwaine, Gwen/Lancelot, Arthur/Gwen and Uther/Ygraine all with one), and then two that are far less common than they deserve to be (Elyan/Gwaine and Elyan/Leon, both with a single fill).

As you know, the February/March bonus badge theme is crossovers and fandom fusions - so far we've had five people claim the badge, and hopefully plenty more will in the next month!

The possibility of Gwaine finding out about the magic in itself would be a source of stress for Merlin considering Gwaine’s attitude on magic, and that made me sad just thinking about it, as well as also make me miss Lancelot, so to make myself feel better I’m pretending being a dragon lord means being some sort of nobility, minor or otherwise, and so Merlin is like. Not telling Gwaine about being a dragon lord because of Gwaines views on nobles (which he shares.)

THAT- or an au where it’s earlier in the seasons, season 1 actually, and Merlin doesn’t know Balinor is his father but knows Balinor was a dragon lord who disappeared and that dragon lord abilities pass upon death from parent to firstborn so when Lancelot rocks up to Camelot and needs to be a noble, Merlin creates an identity for Lancelot where he is Balinor’s youngest son (therefore not in the running for being a dragon lord) and when Killy gets loose, everyone looks to Lance like, welp. Gotta find your dad now I guess. Meanwhile Gaius has been sweating nervously throughout all of this in the background

Merlin, after summoning Kilgharrah: I’m so, so sorry, I never wanted you to find out this way…

Gwaine (in shock): You’re a- you’re a-

That said, not sure how well Lancelot pretending to be the son of a sorcerer is gonna play out 😬 Merlin having to make up rules for why Lancelot couldn’t possibly become a Dragonlord, only to find out that the guy whose identity Merlin stole on Lancelot’s behalf… is his own. Whoops? Maybe just stick to trusted noble families next time you participate in friendly identity theft.

With adjustments to the plot + character arcs and how events play out (like for example Lucas would fall in love w Max still not El but also elmax as morgwen possibilities), it fits them all so WELL especially Mike and Will as Arthur and Merlin. Even their families fit: Will growing up with a single mom in poverty who loves him, Mike growing up in wealth with a shitty asf dad that makes horrible decisions but Mike would be a much better leader than him-

okay okay okay hi elli. i have thoughts on this, and it's been a while since i've thought about those thoughts but here i am today. to share with you my thoughts. some of them get a little funky weird controversial, so bear with me. (also. i say read all of this with caution if you're still watching merlin, bc i'm gonna try to not spoil too much of it, but i will be hitting on major character arcs that build throughout the show!)

the easy ones. will's merlin. mike's arthur. duh. easy peasy. all the parallels you just mentioned? perfect. literally byler as merthur works so well, and i just know modern byler would've loved this show. like mike starts watching it and gets so excited??? anyways.

i also think lucas is actually more of a mix of lancelot/gwaine, and dustin would be leon (though depending on where you are in the series, you might not have gotten to the point where leon is a more central character?). anyways, i think lucas is a mix of lancelot/gwaine because he has the same moral righteous and kindness of lancelot, but is definitely more brash like gwaine (love my boy planning to storm fucking hnl by himself lol). with dustin, leon's a very level-headed character, also arthur's second in command for later seasons with the knights, and so i think it fits with how mike and dustin are both the planners and dustin sorta steps up to help lead in mike's absence in s4!

now for the girls. so, i've gone back and forth on this, because for obvious reasons, the el/gwen parallel works because of the merlin/arthur/gwen and will/mike/el love triangle. like that's the most obvious interpretation of this. but then, as i was thinking about it (and honestly i was wandering down this rabbit hole while writing my merlin byler fic lmao), i was trying to think about where el having powers and just willel in general would fit into all of this?

so i started thinking about el/morgana, which then would um. make max/gwen. (i'll come back to that in a second, let me explain el/morgana first.) i'm just thinking about how morgana is one of the most powerful sorcerers we see in the show and how morgana and merlin are foils to each other. i think there's an episode that calls morgana the darkness to merlin's light. so like yes, merlin and arthur are two sides of the same coin and have their shared destiny, but likewise, morgana has always been that third part of their destiny (which is so fun once you explore the ancient religions and stuff this show loosely pulls inspiration from, because three is kind of a big number) in that she is connected to merlin.

so you think about willelmike, right? and obviously, el is our hero and protagonist of the show, so she's not gonna end up turning bad unlike morgana. but in the context of thinking about a merlin x st crossover, how interesting would it be if el did turn evil? because in st, we see this is a back and forth conversation el has with herself - is she the monster? is she good? or is she bad?

and i think about an el who actually did go with henry when prompted to in the lab. an el whose moral code would be shaped and manipulated by someone with an ulterior motive, someone who recognizes her power. because that, in my opinion, is what happened to morgana with morgause. morgana was terrified and alone because she had this secret which could get her killed, and morgause was the first to show that her magic could be good. so she trusted morgause and went spiraling down a path that led her to destruction because of how morgause manipulated her into thinking. i don't think morgana was ever inherently evil. i think the fear and manipulation motivated her and morphed into anger and a desire for revenge, because this poor woman was alone for so much of her story.

so, when i'm imagining a merlin x st au, i am imagining henry would take that morgause role. if we're following merlin canon, will and el never learn about each other's magic and spend their character arcs alone and motivated by fear, when they really could've found solace and love and acceptance in each other. if we're not following merlin canon, will decides not to be an idiot? and he tells el about his magic? and they become magic twins together, and look, el grew up as mike's sister essentially, so then will's basically her brother in law.

(also. the platonic elmike sibling vibes crack me up. like all the canon st jokes about how they're so family coded? that right there. merlin vibes. they're family. no dating your sister.)

anyways, so that then defaults us to having max as gwen, which i think would change her character a little bit. maybe instead of a romance between max and mike, it's more that sort of friendship that gwen and arthur do develop, because max challenges mike to be better and brings out the good parts of him - the parts that care about justice and about his people and about doing the right thing. and so mike, kind of feeling forced into having a queen because ya know. laws of the land and stuff, very tentatively asks max if she would ever consider stepping into that role because he believes she would be an excellent leader. and so that's when the engagement happens and stuff and it's for show for the people, and only like. will and max and mike and dustin know that obviously. and then through whatever circumstances, the engagement ends up called off, and unlike in merlin canon, it doesn't end up happening again, and max just becomes an advisor to mike, who remains single as a king until. ya know. magic is legalized and he marries will (not following canon lol. or he dies. and i cry again.

Merthur parents AU headcannons!

-Merlin is very sweet and understanding but everyone once and while he just snaps because why are kids so Dumb and Arthur and their kids are scared lol. Like Merlin is the boss of the house lol.

-Arthur really wants a boy so if they have a girl he always pushed them to be super athletic and many. He for sure reached them sword fighting.

-Merlin reads them fairy tales about dragons and Killgarrah is like their grandpa (besides Gaius.)

- gaius is awful at babysitting and ends up traumatizing the kids by teaching them about blood cleansing lol

-the knights are great baby sitters and love taking care of the kids. Esspecially Gwaine. He says he hates kids but he loves theirs esspecially if they have a girl.

-Morgana is the aunt that teaches the swear words.

-morgana and Merlin gossip about Arthur over tea.

-Merlin is very easing going so he always plays with the kids and ends up with a full face of makeup and ten new bruises lol.

-Arthur is very overbearing just because he loves them so much and makes sure they know that. He’s be the type to feel like the kid is being distant and just yell how much he loves them and how he never wants to lose them and their just like…dad I was just tired calm down lol

August Round-Up

We are without frills this month, because trying to open canva crashed my browser twice. I know third time is supposed to be the charm, but I don’t wanna take the chance that it’s actually gonna be ‘third time kills your laptop forever’...

So, if we could all get on with pretending it’s closer to August than October, here’s our double load of stats!

July brought us 42 fantastic fills created by 18 wonderful participants (and one by me, though I don’t remember what it was or when I posted it...). Fics were once again top of the list with 32, but art (3) was edged into third place by fantabulous gif creators (5 fills!), and we also got a beautiful fanvid and a glorious playlist to round things off. Unsurprisingly, most fills were either Merlin/Arthur (20) or gen (12), though Merlin/Gwaine (3) and Merlin/Lancelot (2) have their own share of fans.

As for August, we got 50 fills created by 26 people. 38 fics, six artworks, two gifs, one fanvid, plus the glorious overachievers who decided to do fic and art (one person), and a moodboard and ficlet (one person, but they did it twice!).

On the subject of overachievers, the absolute machine who brought us nine fills in July brought us a further six in August - if you’re who I think you are, you’re well on your way to blacking out a second bingo card, and I am filled equally with awe at your creative output and shame at my own (yeah, those badges I promised wouldn’t be long last time? Turns out they still haven’t materialised...)

Shipwise, it’s the same old story: Merlin/Arthur with 27, gen with 10, and Merlin/Gwaine (2) still plodding along in the background, though this time they were matched by Gwaine/Percival and Merlin/Morgana... The Lancelot/Merlin fills were non-existent this month (if my keyboard did emojis, I’d be sadfacing right now), but we did get a few other rarepairs, including one Lancelot/Will fic - only the fourth work on ao3 to be tagged as such!

How does everyone pick last names for their modern AU fics? Like im gonna keep the last names we know about (Arthur Pendragon, Morgana le Fay) but what about the others? Ive seen a lot of "Merlin Emrys" but i think i wanna keep "Emrys" for something like Merlin's username or stage name

Right now i have:

Lancelot du Lac (because legends but im open to changing it)

Guinevere/Gwen Thompson, or Smith (because in canon her dad's name was Tom but also he was a blacksmith)

Elyan Thompson, or Smith (because in canon his dad's name was Tom but also he was a blacksmith)

Leon Knight (because if i was giving anyone "Knight" its gotta be him)

But i still need Gwaine, Percival, Gaius, and Merlin

an au where gwaine casually mentions that merlin knew his dad in front of arthur, not knowing arthur doesn’t know. arthur starts to question him about it, and gwaine panics. before he can stop himself he blurts that merlin knew his dad, because they’re married and therefore gwaine’s dad is merlin’s father-in-law. that stuns arthur enough to not notice the obvious lie, and gwaine runs while he’s distracted. merlin is incredibly confused when the next morning arthur asks about gwaine and his apparent marriage.
