(Barry feels like he's going crazy after finding out he's in love with Hal, luckily for him; The Lantern is willing to help him with his romantic dramas and give him some of his sage advice. via Google Translate)
Just the Two of Us (We Can Make It If We Try) Ch8 by @layspotatochipabs
It's been too long since they've seen each other. All that yearning must've led them to meet again, but was it Hal's will or Barry's hope? Or: Hal and Barry reunite on Odym and have fun times together. With marshmallows, of course.
Día 7: Familia encontrada by HisoNao
Hal tiene uno de esos días donde piensa en su padre y comienza a reflexionar acerca de lo que significa la palabra familia para él.

Excuse this daily summary's lateness. I could not pre-write it, on account of being dead.
Nothing too of note happened. Dante says we are going to attempt the refraction railway tomorrow.
I do not trust any of my fellow sinners' cooking abilities, save Outis. If I were stranded on a desert island with no stable food source, and my only option for food was a meal prepared by them, I would simply walk into the ocean. I am going to go to bed and try and erase today's events from my memory.
..... I find myself missing my mother's cooking.

with the conclusion of the demeter’s tale, I’d just like to toss out this queer reimagining of the trip from the 90s :)
it's quite heavy on the sexuality and the captain's character/guilt, but I found it interesting to peruse for the sake of it and it's place in latam literary history and for its assertion that queerness is not monstrous

Personally, I only think of Melinoe as Persephone's daughter, and I feel that in some retellings, she gets too much focus as Hades' daughter. But I don't think it's more accurate to claim she is just another creature of Zeus' crime. Remember, the only Orphic hymn of Melinoe does not clearly tell us what is going on.
Interpretations of these two verses vary widely. The antecedent of ἧι could be Persephone or Melinoe. The subject of ἐμίγε could be 'Pluto deceived' (the transmitted reading, ψευσθεὶς Πλούτων), or Zeus (from v. 3) 'having deceived Pluto' (Gesner, ψευσθεὶς Πλοῦτων, but this requires giving the passive participle ψευσθεὶς an active sense), or (Zeus again) the 'false Pluto' (Ricciardelli, ψεύστης Πλούτων). In v. 5, the subject of ἔσπασε could be Pluto (or Zeus) or Melinoe, and the verb could mean 'drew' (Laur. 36.35, Scaliger, Ricciardelli) or 'tore' (Athanassakis, Charvet, Fayant). The myth remains, perhaps intentionally, obscure. (……) It may be, as Gesner suggests, that Melinoe has a double paternity, accounting for her double appearance, 'a Plutone furvum, lucidum a Iove'. (Daniel Malamis, The Orphic Hymns, p130)
As appealing as the idea of Zeus being a fake Plouton is, it must be assumed that Persephone is already married to Plouton and remains Zeus' daughter in this context. Therefor, Zeus have to fake his identify and do the crime again. However, without concrete evidence, I think the idea of Zeus' incest is overused, since both Proclus and Nonnus suggest that Zeus' union with Persephone earlier than her relationship with Plouton.
Instead, to me, it's still reasonable to think that Plouton lay with Persephone after Zeus, and that Persephone bore Melinoe after Dionysus, similar to the case of Heracles and Iphicles. Heracles was called both "son of Zeus" and "son of Amphitryon" since Homer. Dioscuri and Theseus are also examples of heroes who has two fathers. Unlike the heroes whose two fathers are totally distinct figures, the idea of Zeus and Hades being one is much more common and older (I might write a post about it later), which might suggests that this poem is simply another version of Persephone's abduction, though it is still very disturbing.
Yet that's just my interpretation. People can choose to believe father of Melinoe is Zeus or Hades or both, to believe that this is a awful variation of the Alcmene myth. But interpretations are not the original source. The so-called orphic texts are already problematic, the simplified summary makes them worse. (I'll never stop complaining about Zagreus replacing Dionysus.)

30 daily kipperlilly's!
Tumblr media
On April 26th, I drew Kipperlilly Copperkettle for the first time. The next day, I drew her again! And again. And... here we are.
I'm really proud of how much I was able to commit to this. The "daily Kipperlilly" project is going to become a little less... daily, going forward. As my summer plans grow, I won't really have the time to draw her every single day anymore. But rest assured, I still be drawing her. She's far too entrenched in my mind to be abandoned.
And while this is absolutely self-indulgent of me - if you'd like to share in the tags or replies which Daily Kipperlilly is your favorite, I'd love to hear!

My final art summary for 2024, along with the individual months in the read-more below.
Definitely a year of more personal works than ever, including a healthy dosage of Mauve early on and a couple related to VR avatars. Still happy to have something to look back at from the year to go with past years' summaries.
Thanks y'all for being along for the ride.

I feel like I learned a lot about storytelling + "marketing" a story from Webtoon (the Webtoon from a few years ago when it was still decent). The way it worked was that 1) story blurb to draw in people 2) three initial episodes to get people invested 3) one episode per week. It showed the strength of a strong summary with a genre but without trope tags (unlike fanfiction) or describing your work as abc meets xyz (which seems to be what YA publishing does nowadays?). The three initial episodes introduces tone, artstyle, main characters, main plot, basic worldbuilding, and is supposed to quickly "hook" the reader. I like the format of three initial episodes (instead of one) because the first episode is usually different (given its main purpose is to grab the attention of new people), the other two gives you a taste of what a "standard weekly update" might contain.
I feel a lot of Webtoons start with a strong premise/ gimmick/ hook but they don't know what to do with it. And that's totally normal because some premises are better when shrouded in mystery and you have to do the hard work of explaining the mystery. I've read Webtoons that start with one premise, then it gets sidelined in the middle as new themes develop, and in the end you realise the "premise" was a marketing tactic to draw people in and the story is about something else entirely, but you stayed because it was still a good story, and you have no complaints. (Eg. I think people step into I Love Yoo thinking it's a romance, and the first bits do seem like a set up for romance, but it turns out the genre is drama and the romance is a slooooooow burn.) I've read Webtoons that start with one interesting premise, then it fizzles away and turns into a rather standard story for its genre to the point the hook is barely relevant when it was what made it stand out. And on the rare occasion you will find a Webtoon that has its premise, develops the plot from there, sticks with its themes, and the ending is thematically resonant. (I think Cursed Princess Club does a good job at this.) But it's difficult to craft a very consistent and coherent story (especially given the serial format), so it's fine to just kinda sideline or even ditch your premise so long the actual main plot is solid. Your premise is what initially got people reading, but they'll get invested in other things. Maybe you even have to manually create a hook and get into the meat later once your readers are properly invested. But I feel most of the time it's otherwise because you can get a really cool idea but NO CLUE on how to end it and it sucks because either you drag on or give it an unsatisfactory ending. The good thing is that you get a "buffer zone" in which readers are still interested in reading due to the premise/hook and you get the time to properly work things out.
So I don't think a premise has to be completely executed and explained in order for a story to be compelling. If it does its job of bringing in new folks and convincing them to stay long enough to get invested in style/tone/plot/characters/relationships/whatever, sometimes it's easier to let the premise go. Sometimes you want a tonal shift. But at the same time, a premise is so useful for marketing purposes. You can talk about what tropes it has and what media it's influenced by, but what is the story actually about?

Wow i actually have enough rendered pieces to make an art summary this year. Just barely tho
Ramble below, also template ref
Oh god where do i even start. This is the part where i reflect on myself and do nothing about it afterwards.
In thems of topics, it's mostly just apex d2 and wf. I've never made my own world and characters because most ideas that i have the motivation to make into art comes from me playing the game. Maybe that's why I don't really treat a lot of my original character as "original characters", because they're still bound to a game instead of, you know, born out of the blue i guess.
I barely did render this year... I mean, not just this year of course. I think I slightly got the hang of it these two months? At least I kinda have a pipeline that I can follow and could tolerate / fix some of my mistakes in the later stages (e.g., picking wrong colors for flat color and wanna fix it during rendering etc.). It's... kinda like OOP? Decoupling code? I think it just comes down to opening a million layers and not feeling bad about it. Anyway I think one of my improvements comes from here.
Another improvement would be the speed of doing sketches and the complexity of the lineart I can handle (idk how to say that). I need to draw comics and there would be a lot of people in there, so even if I don't practice specifically I still need to draw some human figures. The complexity part is due to me getting into warframe just because of how fucking complicated they all are. Maybe instead of lineart complexity I should say I'm comfortable drawing somewhat complex characters now without my brain overloading and immediately giving up. Still haven't drawn BT though.
That's probably all the obvious improvements I can think of. I didn't read as many books as last year, but the two main books I read last year are for perspective and anatomy, which I do find very very useful. I still often go back to check some anatomy stuff this year, and with me spam drawing comics I think I can draw human figures better than before... if I only consider proportion that is. I think I have to redo anatomy all over again especially for the muscle part. Also probably should do more real human reference practice... Well, you can probably guess why I said that at the start.
I do think the reason why I do so little rendering is because I mostly do comics. Most of my ideas have a plot and my idea list is waaaaay too long to actually color the comics. And as I feel more comfortable drawing comics I fear more when I wanna do rendering because of the skill gap I have between the two subjects. Also most of you come for silly comics so why do I do full rendered pieces anyways... Yeah, after typing that sentence I do feel wrong thinking like that. But oh well, I guess I can't escape the curse of liking to see numbers go up.
Speaking of numbers, here's some of them. Good thing I don't have to deal with Tumblr API myself.
Tumblr media
That's... quite a lot of followers, for me. I mean I don't stay in only one fandom so I have no idea why most of you followed me. Also sorry to ultrakill fans I just don't draw a lot for that game but I see some of you liking a ton of ultrakill post and immediately follows me. Kinda felt that I baited you folks for following me tbh...
Also 3 of my top 5 posts (2234 > 1726 > 1641 > 1531 > 1321) are ultrakill and I only have 27 ultrakill art posts (a lot fewer than other games) so... um, maaaaybe you should consider unfollowing me to clean up your timeline...?
Aaand here are the note stats per month because I've already typed this much so why not just include literally everything in one post
Tumblr media
The only thing I can analyze is that the note and post number started to lose correlation due to how much ramble shitpost I have these months.
Okay that's it. I intended to make another art summary for the lineart / unrendered art pieces, but there's just too many to choose from and I don't think you can infer more from these given that the rendered pieces already has lineart in them. Mostly.

Okay, "a series of individual fics" had a narrow win, so as promised it's on AO3 now. I will still keep posting the responses to each ask here on tumblr first, but if anyone wants to just follow the series instead, I've got the info below.
Series Title: Hand In Hand
Summary:
The Professor stood up and, after laying his golden crucifix on the table, held out his hand on either side. I took his right hand, and Lord Godalming his left; Jonathan held my right with his left and stretched across to Mr. Morris. So as we all took hands our solemn compact was made.
The characters of Dracula hold each other's hands a lot. (So much so that I was spoiled for choice on quotes about it, though in the end I chose the time almost all of them do so at once.) This series is a collection of short fics involving different types of handholding.
Notes:
This series is listed as complete, because each fic within it is a complete oneshot. However, I may add to it whenever I finish another prompt.
All the prompts have been sent to me on my tumblr from this prompt list. If you have a combination of characters/handhold you would like to see, feel free to send me an ask.

I am now commencing the daily summary.
We did not get past line 2 of the railway. We continually lost to the envy peccatulum. Dante seems frustrated.
The thought of Marie not only being a sinner in a Mirror World, but actively thinking and speaking of me, is not one that I had ever considered until today.
I am considering taking what mementos I've been given so far (photos, a wrapper from one of my Valentine's chocolates, and a green teabag that I opt to save instead of use) and putting them in my scrapbook. I shall see about doing it in the morning.
I will continue to answer asks tomorrow.

I liken todays events to this bread loaf of unknown age that I left upon my nightstand once upon a time. T'was rough on the exterior, but every slice further retained the softness a loaf is known for, before I had enough of it.
That is all, for today. I bid all a farewell and goodnight.

I think my least favourite thing I've seen the now obligatory AI generated summary-thing of is of academic essay abstracts because like,,, girl. The essayist already wrote an abstract. Part of writing the damn essay for publishing is writing the damn abstract. I don't need an ai summary because the essayist has already written me a summary. I am so irrationally angry at ai being forced into spaces where it literally has no work to do just because it's the hip, new thing. Just show me your essayist's abstracts. Y'know, the one they are required to write for their godsdamned essay??
