The conversation Damien has with Huxley after coming out to his mom hits a lot harder when you remember:

A) This is happening the same night Damien finished moving into Huxley's. Hence why he says "This isn't how I wanted tonight to go". At this point, he and Huxley aren't just dating, they're building the rest of their lives together.

Huxley is such an important part of his life, and it's in their home, their shared space, that her rejection comes crashing down on him.

B) Damien had a similar conversation with Freelancer earlier that day at his old apartment. There, he was sad, but he doubled down on not caring what she thinks, on his decision to finally live his life for himself.

I don't think he was lying to Freelancer. Damien very much wants to Not Care, to be happy and too bad if his mom isn't on board. He wants what he said to be true.

But I think it shows growth, that as this probably wore on him throughout the day, he was able to be as open and vulnerable with Huxley as he is. Damien doesn't want to care, but he does, because it's his mom.
