This year, the server is doing a small month long challenge for our lovely writers and artists.

Each of the 4 weeks of June has a very general prompt (we've included some ideas if you have trouble thinking of anything, though you don't have to use those at all).

For the ARTISTS: do one (or more if you want to) quick piece of art per week surrounding he week's prompt. If you post them on tumblr, tag this blog (@batpham-discord-highlights) with your batpham server pride challenge art so we can reblog your creations!

For the WRITERS: do one (or more if you want to) piece of flash fiction (which is any piece of writing that is 1k or under) per week surrounding the week's prompt. We'll have an AO3 Collection for the event if you want to add your work. Of course if you post on tumblr as well, tag us and we can reblog it :D

Also: you're welcome to spend more time on your pieces, make it bigger/longer, or make more than just the one per week if you want to (this goes to both our lovely artists and writers), but the goal was just to have some quick, easy fun surrounding queer characters, identities, and relationships :>

Choices Fandom: Countdown to 2023

Since I joined the fandom, I have seen amazingly talented artists like the awesome @cashweasel with all the gorgeous Tyril portraits and @pilitella with their unique style -, artists who shared their gorgeous artwork with the Fandom, bringing some of our favorite characters to life, some of those fanarts I still remember fondly from time to time, especially from the artists who deactivated or moved on from Choices.

This year I loved seen your art on my dash and what you created inspired by new books like Immortal Desires and Wake the Dead, or showing your love and support to books from the past, keeping them alive, like Ride or Die. So, I'd like to thank each of you for sharing your talents. The fandom is lucky to have so many amazing creatives.

I'll list some of my favorites this year, but my appreciation goes to all of you creatives - listed here or not.

Midsommar

Did not expect THAT to be the opening for the movie

Another thing I somehow didn’t expect: that the endless sunlight of the summer solstice is actively used to enhance the disorientation of both the characters and the audience

I love how it is a bit of a classic love triangle between the protagonist, someone very ordinary, and someone dangerous and intensely loving, but in this case the latter is a whole-ass cult (Edit: Oh right! There’s also a specific person in the cult who’s personally manipulating Dani since the very beginning, and is stealing her from her boyfriend. So this is even more literal than I initially thought!)

I’ve seen the collective crying scene on my dash many times but it has such a different effect in context! How Dani endures all kinds of bullshit that Christian does out of free will, but breaks down after witnessing and likely misinterpreting him being a victim. Rhythmic crying in one building juxtaposed with rhythmic moaning in another, making it very clear it’s a well-rehearsed, deliberate tactic without an ounce of genuine compassion. The loneliness of unshared grief at the beginning of the movie vs the deliberate orchestration of shared grief as a community bonding ritual at the end.

IMO, both main characters being drugged and immobilized for the entire final sequence cheapens it, especially for Dani. I was looking forward to seeing how the cult manages to brainwash her within such a short period of time, but she was simply physically weakened to a degree it’s hard to talk about making deliberate choices. It’s way too easy to imagine a scene where Dani wakes up sober and either kills herself or is killed during an escape attempt. As for Christian, he’d been such an asshole throughout the entire movie that I expected him to jump at the cult’s offer and die a darkly cathartic death. Instead, he has his first ever sympathetic moment and is immediately drugged and raped. All to have him on equal ground with Dani and to keep the plot from breaking, I guess.

Is William Jackson Harper getting typecast as intellectuals now? I guess we can’t have a horror story without someone who is so busy trying to understand what’s going on, he forgets to even try to run away!

Very amused by a couple of lines stabbing at cultural relativism. How can you judge, it’s their tradition!

Some body flower arrangement straight out of Hannibal at the end! Could have gone without the extremely gory close-ups in the middle of the film, too.

Entity diagnosis: more of the Web and less of the Corruption than I expected. (Plus a bit of the Spiral!)

✎ BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Rosa Elena Harper was born on 12th October to a very young mother, following her slightly older twin sister. Separated not only from her mother but also her sister within a week, Rosa ended up in the foster system and jumped from home to home very quickly for the first 4 years of her life, before ending up living with the Cohen-Chang family. Six years went by, living with them, and Rosa started to believe that she might have found a place there – but this was not to be.

8 weeks before her 11th birthday, Rosa left school to be picked up by her social worker, Alice, rather than one of her new parents. Going into the empty house to get her belongings felt like a special punishment, but she didn’t know what had happened, or why her family was being torn away. Looking around the home one last time, she snuck a photograph of the whole family that had been taken only a month before in her bag as a memento and quickly followed Alice out.

The group home wasn’t the worst place to be, but it was much louder than she was used to. A few of the girls weren’t exactly nice, but she made a few friends and waited for her next move. Around six months later, she was matched up with the Harper family – a single mother with three children, one of whom had been adopted – and moved into the home. It took a while for Rosa to feel safe and settled here, especially after having lost her previous family after such a long time, but they settled into a comfortable dynamic, especially as Dani and Rosa became partners in crime.

At school, she excelled in English classes, and kept a 3.7 GPA up in an attempt to prove that she wasn’t “just” a care kid. At high school, she joined both the Cheerleading squad and the journalist club, finding her passion in the later when a scandal broke in the school – the headteacher had been embezzling funds from the school to keep his private business afloat – and she applied for an internship at local paper to start her career off.

Still uncertain as to what her role would be, Rosa was very nervous going into her test. She felt as if she could come out as either still, as she’d felt both of them inside her when dating her high school boyfriend. Through their experimentation, he’d figured himself to be a sub, and Rosa hoped she’d be a Domme to match him. When this didn’t come to play, and both were classified as subs, the relationship fell apart, and Rosa threw herself into her college education, rather than dealing with her emotions.

Her journalism major with a Political Science minor at Northwestern was intense, but enjoyable, and she avoided having relationships throughout, just hooking up whenever she felt she had to submit. Her roommate, another female sub, was sat on her bed, crying to her long-distance boyfriend on Skype when Rosa agreed to try and help her deal when she needed physical restraint, without any sexual connotations. These two together kept Rosa’s needs in check throughout her time at university, and she graduate with honours in the class of 2013.

Three years down the line, now living in New York and working as a political reporter for the New York Times, Rosa gets really drunk one night and comes home with a female partner, rather than a male one. Repression, however, has been the name of Rosa’s game since the end of high school, and rather than dealing with her sexuality, she pushes it down, stops trying to hook up and goes weeks without speaking to anyone. Two months later, Dani sneaks into Rosa’s apartment and discovers her sister in serious withdrawal and drags her sister out of her apartment and to a Dom to try and get some help. It works, and the two create a friends-with-benefits situation to stop Rosa from spiralling again. She doesn’t wish to be claimed by him – arguing that she’s too focused on her career – but he does, so they agree he can claim someone else as long as he continues this liaison too.

That works partially, but Rosa knows that she’s still missing something, and when her Dom claims another sub and they both come to Rosa’s for her 28th Birthday, she knows that not only is she bisexual, but she’s also a switch, rather than a sub. Now dealing with her sexuality and being introduced to the queer world by her Dom, she still represses the switch aspect until everything falls down six months later. Her ex-Dom and sub have both moved away, and while she is having her sub needs meet by a Domme she’s (non-exclusively) dating, she’s spiralling without an outlet for her dominant needs, and eventually confesses everything to her girlfriend, who convinces her to get retested to find out for sure. Her switch status confirmed, Rosa checks herself into Dalton Sanctuary, away from her normal life in Ohio to try and start dealing with her life.

HEADCANONS

Dani will always love Santana even now, she was the girl that got away and Dani regrets letting her go, but she is too prideful to admit it, and seeing Santana being happy with Brittany leaves her melancholy, and often, when she’s drunk, a bit bitter and resentful. She keeps Santana and Britt at a distance and tries her best to fake it as she wrestles with the one that got away.

Dani has a notebook of songs that she’s too shy to share with anyone just yet but she can  be seen singing covers and trying out a few of her originals at the local coffee shop she works at.

Dani had her first time with Santana, it was special and romantic (yet with a little bit of booze in their systems). She hasn’t sleep with anyone else since.

Dani struggles with depression, anxiety and PTSD from her home life. Her father, once her biggest hero, the one she would sit at the pew and watched for hours, turned violent, angry, lashing out at her family. She struggles most when the voices of her past come back to haunt her. .  She escaped to NYC at the pushing and prodding of her grandmother after her father kicked her out of the house.

Dani has a crush on Juliette Fabray, a best friendship that’s beginning to bubble into something more. Dani’s not quite ready to admit to herself what it could mean.

CONNECTIONS

PARENTS: Ramon & Gina Harper. Growing up, Dani, known primarily as Danielle in a small town just outside of Austin was a devoted church kid, the one who taught Sunday school to younger children while her father preached in the next room, or sat at the pews next to her mother. Gina knew that her daughter was gay but her father, a devout Catholic preacher in the bible belt, couldn’t stand to face what that would mean for the church and his reputation. So, she kicked her out. SIBLINGS/OTHER IMPORTANT FAMILY: Grandmother, Grandmother Lila Jean, was the one who took Dani in when her parents kicked her out. Dani talks to her grandmother weekly, if not daily when she’s struggling the most. CLOSE FRIEND: Rachel Berry & Quinn Fabray: They both took it upon themselves to take Dani under their wing and welcome her to the big city. Juliette Fabray: Her best friend and current crush. Juliette spends a lot of time reading at the coffee shop/bookstore that Dani currently works at. Dani gives her free drinks and they chat over the newest book that Juliette is inevitably reading.

Bart forgets to tell the rest of young justice that he is gay, which may have become a problem when he was caught kissing Phantom on their date

Twitter is convinced Batman is dating Clark Kent, and Bruce Wayne is dating Superman.

Ace(possibly aro) Damian trying his damndest to date and it never going well cause he doesn't know wtf is up with his own head. Him either entering a qpr with someone/s or finding someone else who is ace.

Dani ends up in Bludhaven during June. Dick spots a small, lonely girl staring around in wonder. Things happen, particularly Dad!Dick activates.

Katherine Kane and Sam Manson first met at a gala when it was interrupted by a rogue attack and they were the only two that did anything about it.

Tucker is the only one that can solve the Riddler’s questions. His reward is a dinner date.

Tucker goes to Gotham with one mission: get the gay Robin’s autograph. This proves harder than originally thought.

While working with Leslie Thompkins, Jazz meets Harper Row—part time doctor's assistant and part time vigilant.

Dash ends up going to Gotham U. Finally away from his dad's expectations, he lets himself explore the part of himself he had to keep buried. Dick runs into him at a gay bar and decides this obviously out of his depth guy needs support. Eventual Core Strength but only after Dick tries to help set Dash up with a date and realizes he's jealous.

A series of shenanigans where the batfam thinks that Jason is lying about having a boyfriend. Danny is a cryptid who keeps getting pulled away by either ghost king duties or general shenanigans.

Same Mistakes // Chapter Twenty Three

I silently sat outside of Justin's New York apartment, continuously wiping away my tears. I had already spent the last twenty minutes attempting to ring his doorbell but there was nothing. Looking at the clock on my dash the numbers changed from 3:23 to 3:24 am. My phone rang in the seat next to me and my arm robotically reached for it.

"Hello?" My voice was flat, I didn't have the energy or will to add any animation to it.

Tessa spoke on the other end, "Hey, babe. We're all at your apartment. Where are you?

I took a deep breath in an attempt to calm my tears before answering, "Um, Justin's apartment." There was so much commotion going on on the other end that it was hard to focus on whatever Tessa was saying.

"Why don't you come home so we can talk and figure something out? Scooter's here and he's working with his detective. He's pissed and-" I stopped focusing on her words because it truthfully was taking too much energy that I just didn't have. I slowly started my car and made my way back to my apartment.

When I got there so many people were gathered in mine and Dani's small living room. People I recognized and some I didn't. Tessa met me at the door as I took my shoes off and began questioning me.

"Are you- I don't wanna ask if you okay but I-" I stopped her before she could continue, "Then don't because the answer is no."

"Scooter's detective is doing his best, they think they'll figure it out in a few hours."

I scoffed, "Yeah, hours. Cool." I silently made my way to the couch, ignoring anyone even tried to make eye contact with me.

I hadn't realized until now that I was no longer crying and I quickly came to the conclusion that it was because I just didn't have anymore left. It had probably only been about an hour since Scooter had initially called but it had felt like twelve had past.

Around me Scooter and his detective talked on their phones while simontaneously working away on their computers. While all my friends, including Kendall and Hailey, took turns dialing Justin's number. Another hour went by before the spot next to me on the couch dipped.

I didn't care to move because I knew that whoever had just sat down wasn't Justin with my son. Ryan's voice softly spoke, "You should really eat. I know you don't want to but I've been listening to your stomach growl for the part thirty minutes, Nadia." I ignored him and he sighed, "Sky, please. We'll find him. You think Scooter will let this go on too long? God knows he can't afford to have Justin reputation go anymore down the drain."

"I couldn't give a shit less about his reputation." I spat, my tone being a lot more harsh than even I was expecting but it was true. Justin's reputation meant nothing to me and right now neither did he. Jayce was all I cared about.

Out of my peripheral I could see Ryan nod, "You're right and I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that."

"You know that's part of the problem, right?" My voice was dull again, "No one cares about Jayce, just Justin. This will be on the news by tomorrow, 'Justin Bieber runs off with one year old sonleaving mother in worry and despair. Will Justin return?' "

"Nadia-" Ryan was cut off by another familiar voice, "Can I talk to her for a second?"

Looking up I was met by Hailey's face. Confused, Ryan stood allowing her to take his spot next to me. I didn't know where this was going and even though she had nothing to do with this as far as anyone knew I still didn't want to be talking to her.

"I know you don't like me and I get why but I know Justin and well, and I know that he wouldn't do anything to hurt his son. He's an ass and so fucking stupid, but he has a good heart. I am in no way trying to defend him but I firmly believe that Jayce is okay. Justin is an asshole and I know that this room full of people will gladly kick his ass for you right now, including me, stay positive. We'll find him."

I smiled a little because although I didn't care for her or really her words, because she still was defending Justin, it was nice of her. As she got up Scooter yelled from the dining room, "You talk to him?"

His words lingered in my head and my ears perked up, immediately causing me to come to the edge of the couch. I watched Scooter as he quickly wrote on a piece of paper in front of him, "Thank you so much."

After he hung up he made eye contact with me, "That was his dad. He said he talked to him and Justin said he had just landed in Calabasas. We're getting closer, I'm going to have someone out there try and get some information from airports and such."

I nodded and Ryan looked at me with a hopeful look, "That's good, maybe he's surprising his dad?"

"Don't try to justify him taking my son across the country! Are we all aware that he could go to jail for this? This is kidnapping, he's not on her birth certificate. If you're going to defend him too you can leave." The anger that I had been holding in all night had finally gotten the best of me and Ryan could tell. The only person I ever really yelled at like that was Justin, so everyone around me was shocked.

Dani was the one to speak this time, "Nadia, we know. Ryan knows and I don't think he was trying to defend him. We all just want to make you feel better and none of us know how. This has never happened to any of us and I could only imagine what you're going through if it were Harper- We just love you, Nadia."

I sighed and started to cry again, "I-I'm sorry. I just, I don't know how to handle this you guys. I want to be anger, I want to be sad, I just all this to not be happening. I-" As much as I didn't want to give into the tears I couldn't keep holding them in. I tightly hugged the decorative couch pillow and sobbed into it.

Ryan quickly removed the pillow and brought me into his arms, "Let's go pack you a bag and head to the airport. Sitting here waiting isn't going to make you feel any better. "
