Student Experiments Soar!

Have you ever wondered what it takes to get a technology ready for space? The NASA TechRise Student Challenge gives middle and high school students a chance to do just that â team up with their classmates to design an original science or technology project and bring that idea to life as a payload on a suborbital vehicle.
Since March 2021, with the help of teachers and technical advisors, students across the country have dreamed up experiments with the potential to impact space exploration and collect data about our planet.
So far, more than 180 TechRise experiments have flown on suborbital vehicles that expose them to the conditions of space. Flight testing is a big step along the path of space technology development and scientific discovery.
The 2023-2024 TechRise Challenge flight tests took place this summer, with 60 student teams selected to fly their experiments on one of two commercial suborbital flight platforms: a high-altitude balloon operated by World View, or the Xodiac rocket-powered lander operated by Astrobotic. Xodiac flew over the companyâs Lunar Surface Proving Ground â a test field designed to simulate the Moonâs surface â in Mojave, California, while World Viewâs high-altitude balloon launched out of Page, Arizona.

Here are four innovative TechRise experiments built by students and tested aboard NASA-supported flights this summer:

1. Oobleck Reaches the Skies
Oobleck, which gets its name from Dr. Seuss, is a mixture of cornstarch and water that behaves as both a liquid and a solid. Inspired by in-class science experiments, high school students at Colegio Otoqui in BayomĂłn, Puerto Rico, tested how Oobleckâs properties at 80,000 feet aboard a high-altitude balloon are different from those on Earthâs surface. Using sensors and the organic elements to create Oobleck, students aimed to collect data on the fluid under different conditions to determine if it could be used as a system for impact absorption.

2. Terrestrial Magnetic Field
Middle school students at Phillips Academy International Baccalaureate School in Birmingham, Alabama, tested the Earthâs magnetic field strength during the ascent, float, and descent of the high-altitude balloon. The team hypothesized the magnetic field strength decreases as the distance from Earthâs surface increases.

3. Rocket Lander Flame Experiment
To understand the impact of dust, rocks, and other materials kicked up by a rocket plume when landing on the Moon, middle school students at Cliff Valley School in Atlanta, Georgia, tested the vibrations of the Xodiac rocket-powered lander using CO2 and vibration sensors. The team also used infrared (thermal) and visual light cameras to attempt to detect the hazards produced by the rocket plume on the simulated lunar surface, which is important to ensure a safe landing.

4. Rocket Navigation
Middle and high school students at Tiospaye Topa School in LaPlant, South Dakota, developed an experiment to track motion data with the help of a GPS tracker and magnetic radar. Using data from the rocket-powered lander flight, the team will create a map of the flight path as well as the magnetic field of the terrain. The students plan to use their map to explore developing their own rocket navigation system.

The 2024-2025 TechRise Challenge is now accepting proposals for technology and science to be tested on a high-altitude balloon! Not only does TechRise offer hands-on experience in a live testing scenario, but it also provides an opportunity to learn about teamwork, project management, and other real-world skills.
âThe TechRise Challenge was a truly remarkable journey for our team,â said Roshni Ismail, the team lead and educator at Cliff Valley School. âWatching them transform through the discovery of new skills, problem-solving together while being driven by the chance of flying their creation on a [rocket-powered lander] with NASA has been exhilarating. They challenged themselves to learn through trial and error and worked long hours to overcome every obstacle. We are very grateful for this opportunity.â

ok i do have one thing to get off my chest that has been uhhhh made more acutely irritating by bleak house discourse but preexists it and extends way beyond it. there's this really really really annoying thing that people do when they have like had their minds totally blown by someone telling them the most 101 basic ways to "critique" a study and/or its design, and also have been really (understandably i guess) activated by e.g. bad health journalism that loves to sensationalize or make unreasonable claims based on a single study, where now like... whenever they encounter any study (well not actually any study. any study whose conclusions they disagree with lmao), they immediately jump to LMAO LOOK AT THIS TINY ASS SAMPLE SIZE! THIS IS JUST ONE STUDY! CORRELATION IS NOT CAUSATION! CAN YOU BELIEVE THESE STUPID RESEARCHERS DID XYZ? NO CONTROL GROUP! NOT A RANDOMIZED EXPERIMENTAL TRIAL! I CAN'T BELIEVE THESE IDIOTS GOT THIS BULLSHIT PUBLISHED!
and like... is there a lot of dumb bullshit research published? sure, at least in some fields (replication crisis alert... but like i feel like the kids in materials science are probably doing better?) but the appropriate response to that is like... developing a nuanced framework in which any individual study is a single attempt to contribute to a larger body of knowledge that should be assessed in that context. it is not just looking at any finding that crosses your path and assuming (1) the researchers didn't understand or didn't care about the limitations of their study design and (2) any study "flaws" - which certainly any study in the social sciences or social-adjacent sciences will have because humans are complex - mean a study is totally worthless. that is, sorry, anti-intellectual. i don't think the people who do this consciously realize that they are, implicitly, arguing against the entire project of learning anything about human beings and their functioning ever... but they are. because there's no way to study human beings that is not flawed. if you throw out any study that is flawed, you throw out the whole endeavor. and, it would really shock some people to hear this, but at least some of the people who spend their entire lives researching human beings... know this. they know that learning about humans requires taking a lot of imperfect raw data and carefully considering how to interpret it. some of them actually do know this!!!! i promise!!!!! nobody better understands the fallibilities of statistics than a statistician. and yet, statisticians have not en masse abandoned their careers... they simply understand that what they're doing is complicated and never going to be perfect.
anyway. this is a major factor in why maintenance phase became totally unlistenable to me after a while... i simply could not take their ongoing "lmao, look at this dipshit researcher," especially since they are sooooooooo blatantly hypocritical about not holding up things they want to use in support of their own arguments to the same level of scrutiny. (one example that really made me insane... they had a whole episode about how 2000 calories a day is a random arbitrary number not reflective of human needs etc.... but then when they were doing an episode about some high-fiber fad diet aubrey was like "and the amount of fiber recommended was way higher than the FDA's [or whatever agency i'm not looking it up] recommended amount!!!!" oh... now we trust government recommendations? fuck off lmao) (i'm not simping for 2000 calories i just thought that was like sincerely quite egregious and made her look stupid as hell. to be clear michael also does this and it also makes him look stupid but i can't think of any michael examples because i haven't listened in years and this one was so transparent it's what stuck with me.) and like, it's annoying because it's annoying when people who aren't that smart act like they're way smarter than everyone else in the world, but it also matters because like... they tend to dismiss population studies out of hand because Too Many Factors, but population studies are what first pointed to the association between cigarettes and lung cancer - an association later investigated with other analytic tools, but for which, guess what, there has still never been a randomized control trial, because that would be evil. like, i'm sure that the lung researchers of the 1940s knew that correlation doesn't equal causation... but wow thank god they didn't follow that up with "so, basically this is probably worthless, nothing to see here"! assuming you know better than any study before you've even read it is literally anti-science and honestly not that far from how people wind up on the anti-vax train (including in the way that it rests on the assumption that it's probably pretty easy for the lay person to wade through statistical analysis in a specialized field and decide if it's good or not - no! it's not easy!). this has been on my mind again with bleak house discourse because i have had to restrain myself about 1 million times from saying to someone, no fucking shit it's a single imperfect study, you sophomoric dickwad. i'm really not sure how you read that post, which was pretty measured in its appreciation of the study and also very explicitly drew on my firsthand professional experience, and assume that i need to be lectured to about taking every single word of a single small study as gospel... unless you are walking around the world smugly convinced that you are the first person in history to whom it has ever occurred to "question the design of a study" (as opposed to, say, take note of the pros and cons of the study design and think about what implications its limitations may have for interpreting its data and for future study). like... i have spent almost a decade thinking about these topics near-constantly... i would not describe myself as well-versed in the literature of ilteracy but i have DEFINITELY!!!! read more about it than any of these motherfuckers... but sure. i need some really big brained person to sit me down and explain to me that, omg, there were only 80 participants! why are you attacking all college students in america with such a Small Sample Size!!!! why would you have them talk out loud about the text they were reading? wouldn't it be better to have them answer questions at the end (which they did lol) or write their summaries (which would be complicated by the intersection with writing skills lol) or Some Other Imaginary Methodology That We All Definitely Would Accept As Valid Instead Of Also Instantly Condemning Because It Cannot Perfectly Capture Every Nuance Of Human Cognition? like of course one should [alec baldwin in glengarry glenn ross voice] always be critical. but parroting things you have learned sound like critical thinking isn't actually critical thinking. and drawing a hard binary between "true" and "false" in a realm of research that is much more complicated than that... is not critical thinking. it actually is just making it impossible for anyone to say anything about the topic ever lol.
and again... is this really personally annoying for Me, Personally? yes. yes it is. do i find it a really astonishingly unattractive personality trait? oh yeah. big time. but! this matters, in this case, beyond me being a hater, because, like, that thing i said above, about how all human-related studies are inherently always going to be flawed? that goes about six billion times for education. education is unbelievably difficult to study. it's a dark land of confounding variables and minuscule effect sizes. every education study in the world is going to be flawed. all of them! so to look at study, deem it flawed, and determine that therefore it has nothing we can learn from... is like really really literally, in the world of ed shit, to say, fuck it, just go based on vibes. which... has not served the profession well, to say the least.
(i swear to fucking god some people would read the second shift and be like, ok but hochschild only talked to 12 couples? lmao what kind of sample size is that... obviously her in depth interviews have no value compared to administering 500000 questionnaires that we would then nitpick for being insufficiently unambiguous in wording. basically this book has nothing to teach us about the distribution of domestic labor in heterosexual partnerships, which means i never have to think about this topic again since it's made up and doesn't matter!)

Science, The Greatest Weapon (Sonic x Transformers Crossover)

"Can you hear me?" Doctor Ivo Robotnik says to the specimen, sporting an eerie, wide grin. "I know you can hear me. You're not my first UFO, and from what I discovered from your amazing mind, you certainly won't be the last."
The rotund, mustached scientist cackled as he sat in his chair, his gaze focused on the subject before him. Ivo was a roboticist; he presented it well through his creations, even if the people reviled them. Even if they're destroyed by that accursed blue hedgehog. Robotnik stroked his greying, auburn mustache, chuckling lowly. Not too long ago, after the Star Fall Isles incident, one of his Badniks alerted him to an intriguing discovery in the outskirts of Holoska. Using a squadron of Badniks, led by Metal Sonic, he had the specimen teleported to one of the undiscovered bunkers he had on Earth. For weeks, he had attempted to get his discovery to share what he knew, but he refused. Robotnik was met with threats of violence and vows to 'burn down this miserable mudball'. From his past experiences with aliens, they prove to have no manners.
"During each of our sessions, you proved to be quite the unruly and volatile subject," Ivo says, separating his gloved hands from one another, reaching for one of the square buttons on his red & white coat.
"I was trying to be polite. After all, it's not every day that my Badniks discover a true Living Machine. After every session, I reviewed my findings and compared them to my technology. I must admit, from the scattered bits of data I got from your head, your people are more advanced than I. I am quite thankful I found a fun way to rip out those secrets from your soul."
With the press of a button, Robotnik's specimen yelled in complete pain and agony as volts of electricity coursed through its very being. One of its red eyes widened, its mouth opening, revealing teeth. The prisoner jolted upward as the obese doctor cackled with glee. Then, Ivo moves his finger from the button, shutting down the electricity, causing the subject to hang its head low once more.

"Your sacrifice has shown me there are other energy signatures that have arrived on Earth," Robotnik said with glee, turning his chair to the images on his monitors: robotic warriors battling each other. "Similar to yours. My Badniks will track them down, and I will learn about this energy that fuels you."
Ivo rises from his seat, approaches his computer, and retrieves a small, glowing, cyan cube. The mustached terrorist picks up the substance, placing it in a lead-lined suitcase. "It doesn't merely power technology," Robotnik observes, gazing down at the cube with wonder, his brilliant and twisted mind thinking of means to wield this 'Energon'. "It transforms it."
"I am on the verge of unlocking its secrets." Ivo closed the suitcase, shifting his gaze back to the subject, "When I successfully do, I will use it on my machines, elevating them to grand heights." He laughed, lifting up the suitcase and turning away from his prisoner.
"I must thank you, Specimen," Robotnik said, beginning his trek toward the large double doors. "With your sacrifice, the Eggman Empire will be unstoppable. I will lead a new and more powerful takeover, and no force on Earth, or any other world," he turns one last time to the armless subject, "will be able to stop me." He turns his head back to his path and resumes walking. "Not even that annoying blue rodent Sonic will be able to stand against me this time."
Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik cackled loudly as he exited the large lab, planning to use this new energy source to fuel his army, to take over the world once more, and to kill his sworn enemy, Sonic the Hedgehog.

As the large doors shut, Megatron stayed silent, even after what felt like the twentieth or twenty-first electric shock he had endured from this Robotnik insect. Even as the obese cretin dug around his mind with his primitive drones, his thoughts were occupied with revenge. Revenge against Optimus Prime, revenge against the traitorous Starscream whose assassination attempt had led him to land on this rock and held prisoner. He thought of vengeance against the mustache fool who sought to use their precious Energon in his grandeur of delusion. From the latest 'conversation' Megatron endured with the power-hungry wretch, it seemed more Cybertronians had arrived here, most likely his warriors- and his hated enemies. It seems his imprisonment will not last forever, should his more loyal soldiers find him or he finds one slip up in the fool's defenses.
"Starscream," Megatron said with hatred, "Optimus Prime, Robotnik, I shall be avenged."

Megatron's memory processor, though violated by the rotund lunatic, was flooded with flashes of the previous battle before his current predicament. Leading his Decepticons on an assault upon the Human-Made Collider, the hated Autobots arriving and battling to defend the fleshlings, he and Optimus colliding again, and he close to snuffing out Prime's spark once and for all. But, that damnable Energon Axe, he chopped off his fusion cannon arm, kicking him towards the portal, which grew unstable. Before the flash of light, he saw the duplicitous Starscream, aiming his null ray cannon at his face.
When he gets free of this prison, retribution shall come to them all. Starscream, the traitor, will be severely and brutally punished. Robotnik, the fleshing who held him prisoner, he will personally see to his death. Lastly, Optimus Prime, Megatron will slay his precious Autobots and then cut down his hated enemy.
"I shall rise again."

I am spectacularly offended by this Matt Levine reader email about using astrology in consumer finance prediction.
This was a machine learning model â the job of the data scientist was, put everything in, see what's significant, of that discard everything that's discriminatory, the rest is your model. Ultimately with twelve astrological signs it's over 50/50 that one will come out significant at 95%. I thought it was elegant. "Astrological signs? Do you believe that?" my boss said. I said it wasn't a question of belief, I was a statistician and was going to follow the numbers rather than letting anyone's preexisting theories about the stars and planets influence the data science. I think he believed that meant I'd agreed to take it out.
Like, the guy literally said "We're very likely to have a false positive here by chance, but since we got one we have to take it seriously. I'm a statistician."
He's fully aware that he's p-hacking and garden-pathing. He's fully aware of the multiple comparisons problem. And then he endorses the conclusion anyway!
(And, as a side note, it's not over 50/50; If you do twelve tests the chance of one coming out significant by chance is about 46%. So he fucked up the arithmetic too!)

31 days of FF 7 Headcanons: Day 12: First Encounter with Sephiroth
Todayâs exploration explores the first documented interaction between Diana Ravenscroft and Sephiroth during her early years in Shinraâs Science Department. This clinical meeting marked the beginning of a deeply asymmetrical dynamic. It is one rooted not in relationship, but in observation, data extraction, and scientific ambition.
Diana did not see a person when she looked at Sephiroth. She saw a living experiment, a benchmark for what humanity could become when stripped of limitation and reengineered. This post analyzes that foundational moment through the lens of power, dehumanization, and unchecked scientific obsession.

Diana was tasked with conducting a series of routine cellular diagnostics and hormone-level assessments following one of Sephirothâs prolonged missions. Their interaction was perfunctory and clinical. She took samples, recorded vitals, and reported anomalies, but it left a deep impression on Diana, not because of any personal connection, but because of the rare biological data she was allowed to observe firsthand.
To Diana, Sephiroth represented the epitome of applied bioengineering. The Jenova-infused cellular structure that coursed through his veins confirmed everything she believed about the potential of human enhancement. Her interest in him was strictly professional but intensely so. In him, she saw not a person, but a data point: a walking, breathing case study of her life's ambitions realized. She took note of his regenerative capacity, cellular resistance, and neurological response to controlled stimuli, filing away every deviation and irregularity for later analysis.
What Sephiroth was, or could become, became more important to her than who he was. Their exchanges were sparse, often mediated by Hojoâs directives, and limited to the clinical sphere.
Dianaâs role in Sephirothâs medical monitoring escalated as Hojo began delegating more sensitive projects to her. She analyzed tissue samples, observed his reactions to various forms of stimuli, and studied the ways his Jenova cells responded to stress, trauma, and mako exposure. She never sought his trust, nor did she care for his consent. The only thing she cared about was the results. If he acknowledged her presence, it was likely as another faceless scientist in a white coat, indistinguishable from the others who poked, prodded, and cataloged him. Diana did not concern herself with his autonomy or humanity. She viewed him as a controlled experiment with a unique variable: alien cells. The more she learned, the more detached she became, reducing Sephiroth in her mind to a vessel of scientific significance rather than a person capable of will or emotion.
Their relationship, if it could even be called that, was purely procedural and entirely unbalanced. Sephiroth held power on the battlefield; Diana held power in the lab. She never attempted to manipulate him in a social or emotional context, but her fascination with his biology influenced her behavior in increasingly unhinged ways. She began building experimental models based on his genome, laying the groundwork for future human and celestial trails (through Bianca Moore) without his knowledge or involvement.
In hindsight, Dianaâs first meeting with Sephiroth was less a turning point and more a confirmation of her path. It reinforced her belief that human limitations could, and should, be enhanced and lead the path of the obsession she has with Bianca Moore's cells and heritage. Her obsession with optimizing the human condition only deepened as a result of their clinical encounters. She did not see Sephiroth as a cautionary tale, but as unfinished work.
The consequences of her detachment and dehumanization would ripple out in the years to come, especially as she began manipulating Bianca Moore with the same disregard for agency or suffering. For Diana, Sephiroth was never a person. He was a benchmark, a blueprint, and ultimately, a failure she intended to surpass.

The Luckiest Girl in the World (chapter23)
Summary: Rosie shares a surprise with her parents and uncle. All of them have different thoughts about this unexpected development, and silent negotiations are carried out.
Twenty-Three Years Old
I knew that Papa not fully understood my reason for studying international politics and data, but to his credit he didnât for one second try to convince me to give it another thought and opt for something science related instead. Dad was just relieved that Iâd finally had found a path to walk, after several failed attempts. Uncle Myc, well he tried to hide how utterly pleased he was with my choice, but by now I knew him well enough to read the signs. Truth be told, said signs werenât that subtle.
âBien choisi ma chĂŠrie,â he beamed at me, while Papa scowled at him.
âMerci oncle,â I retorted. âI canât wait to start this and go to Paris.â
The three-year BA degree was taught by The University of London Institute in Paris. We would be taught in English, but if we had an A level in French, we could also take French courses. Iâd learned French in school for years, and uncle Myc and I often conversed in French when uncle Greg wasnât around.
I think itâs needless to say that my security and comfort in France was well taken care of. Papa and uncle Myc had a conversation using their eyes only when I spilled the beans. Dad knew exactly what was going on and went to make tea while negotiations were carried out. Once the brothers were satisfied, uncle Myc took out his phone and sent several texts or emails. By now, I knew itâll be futile to pester any of them of what was going on. I was just relieved that no one had tried to talk me out of it, making me feel uncertain or guilty for leaving the country; actually, moving out of my childhood home.
My reasons for choosing this subject were multifaceted. Iâd always enjoyed learning facts, obscure and otherwise, about different countries and cultures. Having had a relatively unorthodox upbringing, containing all sorts of people, played a big part too. The cherry on top was that the school was abroad. Nanaâs tales of her experiences overseas and how educating it is to have lived some time in another country and society, had always seemed enticing to me.

The university was situated close to the Invalides and the Seine, while my lodgings were in the Charonne area in the 11th arrondissement on a cosy cobble street, with a nearby metro station. My landlady, Marguerite Vachon was one of uncle Mycâs acquaintances, from where, I still have no idea.Â
Marguerite preferred that I used her given name instead of the formal, Madame Vachon.
âJe ne suis pas ancient,â was her favourite line and reminded me quite a lot of Nana.
âI am not ancient, dear,â was a statement Nana had used every so often.
Marguerite was a petite and elegant woman. Her hair was cut in a bob, coloured black with a few red stripes. I never saw her without lipstick or makeup. She always wore bespoke dresses and high heeled shoes. I deduced that she was far more than a landlady. When I left for school in the morning, I could hear her sing or talk on the phone, and when I returned, she always opened her door and inquired about my day.
âSheâs clearly spying for Mycroft,â Papaâs voice told me.
And there was something about her, which I couldnât put my finger on. Something mysterious, secret, perhaps even dangerous.Â

It seemed like Marguerite had my schedule memorised. Not that Iâd given her the information, but when she slipped, I got my suspicions confirmed. To be fair, it wasnât slipping per se. She couldnât have known that class was dismissed early that day.
Luckily, I spotted her and was able to hide behind a wall before she saw me. Iâd almost missed her, because she wasnât wearing her normal dress and high heels, but red trousers, a white and blue-striped jumper, and white trainers. Instead of one of her posh handbags, she had a dark blue canvas bag diagonally draped over her chest.
Papa had taught me a few tricks when it came to the fine art of following people without being discovered. Iâve never had much use of them obviously, but now I saw an opportunity. How I would explain this and apologise if I was caught, never crossed my mind.
I was sceptical when Marguerite walked to the metro station, but I was able to get into the same carriage as her, and it seemed that she had no idea she was being followed. She got off three stops later and walked in the direction of the big Père-Lachaise cemetery.
A fitting location for obscure and shady affairs.
Marguerite knew where she was going, walking briskly but not hurried. I had walked the premises several times before and knew where she was headed when I saw the grand tomb of Sir Richard Wallace, the British baronet who contributed millions to the Parisian poor during the Siege of Paris in the early 1870s.
This reeked of another posh Brit I knew.
When Marguerite had placed a folder by the tomb and another woman picked it up five minutes later, I had a hard time keeping myself composed. The woman picking up the folder was the French equivalent of Anthea.
I sent uncle Myc a text when both women were out of sight.
Thanks for keeping track on me, but this thing is like being part of a French noir film. You can tell Papa I think youâre both growing sentimental, and I demand an apology!

my friend is somewhat considering majoring in linguistics but neither of us know a ton about what you do in linguistics so could you share a little of what you know?
Of course! Obviously, there are different paths you can take within linguistics, and this is just my program, but some basics:
We learn the IPA (these /sÉŞmbÉlz/) and how to transcribe speech. We learn about phonemes and allophones. We learn how speech is produced, how the vocal tract functions. We learn how to analyze data sets of words/phrases from languages to determine what each segment means based on the given translation (i can give an example if you like). We learn glossing (breaking down a word/utterance into morphemes and translating it morpheme by morpheme--can also give examples). We learn to analyze and annotate the grammar of a sentence--what is an object, subject, agent, patient, predicate, referring phrase, peripheral argument, subordinate clause, etc (again--have examples). Essentially, how does language function to make and communicate meaning? What IS language?
Then you can get a little more specialized. You can go a more sociolinguistic path, which is looking at how language is used socially--do women use these words more than men? How do queer people speak (accent, diction, etc)?
Or you could focus on historical linguistics and look at how languages change, or how languages might've been connected/in contact in the past. Or focus on documenting language, working with databases and on revitalization.
Many many more paths to choose from, as language is in everything! Linguistics also overlaps pretty heavily at some points with the speech and hearing sciences (audiology, speech language pathology), so you'll probably pick up a thing or two from that as well.
