Morality. Safety. Student engagement in classes. Some legitimate reasons for blocking websites at schools do exist. However, monetary gain for the school district is behind some censorship that affects both students and teachers–despite educational use of the internet.

School districts and public libraries across the nation have been blocking sites for 22 years. According to the American Association of School Librarians, 98% of the nation’s school districts and public libraries filter the online content that is available to minors. But why? And is blocking sites occurring in truly beneficial ways?

Background

To create a safe environment for students while keeping them focused and off inappropriate sites, Congress passed the Children’s Internet Protection Act on Dec. 15, 2000, and it went into effect on April 20, 2001. CIPA requires that public libraries and certain school districts that have students from kindergarten to twelfth grade use internet filters and other measures to protect students from harmful and obscene content in order to obtain certain federal funding.

The Supreme Court has stated that libraries can unblock the filters for adults who request them. The decision was seen as a major defeat for all libraries in the U.S. and for those who had to use the library internet due to no access at home. The ruling also led to concerns about how CIPA would work in schools and the censorship in that setting.

The Debate

The CIPA law sparked debate over censorship in schools, and with the recent rise of book banning in schools, people have returned to this debate. Two sides emerged with various viewpoints on CIPA and blocking sites. One side agrees to the blocking of sites and wants to enforce more restrictions, and another side opposes district blocking sites and has its various solutions to the conflict. Both sides agree that certain sites with sexual content should be blocked, but that is where the agreement stops.

From opposing broad filters and blocking social media sites to wanting realistic barriers that allow children to form their own ideas, even those who oppose blocking sites don’t agree on solutions to what might be considered “inappropriate” content. The opposing side wants to make educational institutions responsible for online content available to students with more responsibility for decisions being left up to the older students.

“Students already know how to get around the firewall by using their phones as hotspots or going to gaming websites that our filter doesn’t catch,” one teacher said.

Students also bypass the firewall by using virtual private networks or VPNs. The gaming sites that filters don’t catch are typically built using Google Sites, Weebly, or even LinkedIn. Games can be found on Scratch that students can access during class. While the district tries to solve these issues, some in this debate demand parents block sites on their children’s personal devices.

This debate is mainly between parents wanting to protect children versus experiences that occur in the classroom with students and teachers dealing with the frustrating situations caused by their school district’s filters.

In the Classroom

While all districts follow CIPA, each district has its policies which can cause interruption in the classroom. A teacher may have a legitimate assignment ruined by a site being blocked.

The survey and poll sent out to all teachers at Nation Ford showed that of 24 teachers, 17 said they had a legitimate site blocked—either their own sites or another site they were using for educational purposes related to course content. Seven teachers had YouTube blocked for class use or assignments. Three teachers had their websites blocked, which held important information for students and parents.

“My own educational website, which I created for my students that I use with instruction was blocked for a year before I finally got access to it at school again,” a teacher said. “I couldn’t send students to the website for enrichment or anything.”

Of course, some blocked websites are needed. One teacher stated that Pinterest was blocked from students who were using it to look at marketing research. Another talked about Adobe Creative Cloud’s AI features being blocked from students, which would have enhanced creativity in the classroom. Most teachers stated they were frustrated with their experience, some mentioning that due to a helpful site with resources being blocked, they were required to work at home.

Despite these experiences, most teachers agreed that some websites needed to be blocked.

“I like the intention, but it causes some unnecessary issues for students and teachers,” one teacher said.

Another teacher said, “I think our system is behind the times. Teachers should be able to approve certain websites for class use on an individual basis.”

The reasoning behind --SD’s blocking of sites is not well understood.

“In some cases, that [blocking sites] is necessary for students’ health and safety,” another teacher said. “I’d be interested to know how the district is deciding these matters, however, because there are times legitimate and educational sites are blocked, which is frustrating.”

The District Policy

The district policy is mentioned in the IJNDB “Use of Technology Resources by Students,” and according to the document, the district is to provide students with access to electronic and technological resources to help them in school. The district has the right to monitor students’ online activities and restrict access to certain websites they deem inappropriate for academic purposes. The --SD system is not perfect, but it is truly impossible to monitor every student and block all the correct sites. The document also states that anyone using the district network, a district-owned device, or holding a district account should not expect privacy given for anything downloaded, transmitted, or received as the district has access to view that information and search account history. The district also notes that they have the right to change their policy at any given time.

--SD’s Chief Communications Officer, ---- Burke, understands the main issue in this debate.

“In general, if a site is blocked and has educational value to a class, the teacher can work with their administration and the IT Department at the District Office to request the site be unblocked,” Burke said. “The district administration will make the determination depending on the site’s content and compliance with policy IJNDB.”

The district has the final say on whether a site will be unblocked based on the content and what they see as educational value to the class. In classes such as Digital Art & Design or Marketing, the district administration could fail to understand the educational value a site could provide. A year is a long time to wait, teachers say.

Possible Solution

Teachers say they can already see students’ screens with such sites as Netop Vision. While this gives the teacher a lot of control over electronic use, it could ensure students stay on task. Teachers say they know what their class needs. This way, the district can continue broad filtering sites while giving teachers control in the classroom.

As New Zealand grapples with a new style of government and approach to the Māori language, Prime Minister Chris Luxon has fallen foul of his advice to the public service.

Mr Luxon appears guilty of a double standard after scolding bureaucrats for taking cash bonuses for understanding the Māori language, te reo, while using taxpayer funds to learn it himself.

Mr Luxon recently confirmed his government would axe payments to te reo-speaking public servants and criticised those who took the bonuses.

"People are completely free to learn for themselves," he said.

"That's what happens out there in the real world, in corporate life, or any other community life across New Zealand.

"I've got a number of MPs, for example, that have made a big effort to learn te reo ... they've driven that learning themselves because they want to do it.

"In the real world outside of Wellington and outside the bubble of MPs, people who want to learn te reo or want to learn any other education actually pay for it themselves."

However, Mr Luxon did not follow his advice.

After repeated requests, the prime minister's office confirmed taxpayers paid for Mr Luxon's classes through a budget offered to the leader of the opposition, saying it was "highly relevant" to his role.

"I think it makes me a better prime minister," he said on Monday.

Opposition Leader Chris Hipkins said te reo was "a national treasure" and learning it should be incentivised.

"Christopher Luxon should be commended for learning Māori, but it's absolute hypocrisy for his government to then set about cancelling the taxpayer subsidies he used to do so, thus denying others that same opportunity," he said.

Waste watchdog the New Zealand Taxpayers' Union called on Mr Luxon to pay back the tuition costs.

Mr Luxon's right-leaning coalition of the National, ACT and NZ First parties has already strained relations with many in Māoridom, particularly over plans to wind back te reo use as championed by the Labour government.

Public servants have been told to communicate in English while public bodies - such as Waka Kotahi for the New Zealand Transport Agency - must revert to using their English-language name first.

Detractors say the government is bashing a minority and inflaming a culture war while the government argues changes have confused non-te reo speakers.

Te reo use is on the rise in NZ but remains a second language.

Competent speakers have grown from six to eight per cent from 2016 to 2021, including 23 per cent of Maori, up from 17 per cent.

Assimilationist governments banned the language in schools for much of the 20th century, causing trauma for many Māori.

Some government members are hostile to te reo use, with Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters believing Aotearoa, the Māori term for NZ, is illegitimate.

In parliament last week, the 78-year-old declined to answer a question in te reo from Rawiri Waititi, the Māori Party co-leader who has mobilised thousands to protest the new government.

Mr Luxon insisted he supported the language and wanted others to learn too.

"It's a fantastic language," he said.

"I wish I had learned as a younger person ... I'm trying to learn.

"I've found it actually very hard."

Mr Luxon had a chequered record with the Indigenous language in his former role as Air New Zealand's chief executive.

Under his leadership, stewards began using te reo greetings such as "kia ora" for hello and "ma te wa" for see you soon.

In September 2019, the airline sought to trademark "kia ora" - the name of its in-flight magazine.

After consultation with Māori leaders, and a local and international backlash, Air New Zealand abandoned the bid a week later.

The Tumblr 'Titty' ban, which came into effect Dec. 17 2018 (for those who may not have been around then) was definitely the lowest point in my entire online existence, as it was for thousands of others. Those of us whose blogs were heavy with NSFW content spent literally weeks cropping and editing and replacing photos and editing posts so they fit inside the Apple Store-mandated guidelines, and it legit nearly killed me. The whole process was made 10000x worse due to the woeful algorithm Tumblr designed to catch all of those terrifying images of 'female-presenting nipples' and consequently hours and hours were also spent sending emails to staff asking for banned content to be reviewed and 'let out of titty-jail'. The only thing that sustained me was the thought of the YEARS of love and effort I had put into my blog and I was damned if I was going to allow some wankers at Tumblr HQ to take that from me.

There were however some small victories, and pics that slipped through the prison bars which you may have already come across ;=) But overall it was a really dark and depressing time. These days I just tend to post Sims Spice on my blogger and there's some on my Pillowfort as well. Thank you as always for the ask and please, spam, spam away! Dec. 7 (UPI) -- San Francisco has shelved its plans for killer police robots, as city supervisors voted down the controversial policy following widespread criticism.

"In a complete reversal, the Board of Supervisors just voted for a military equipment policy that bans police from using robots to kill," board member Dean Preston tweeted Tuesday. "Thank you to all the residents and civil rights advocates who made their voices heard!"

San Francisco's board of supervisors voted Tuesday to pause the program that would allow the city's police department to use 17 robots, armed with explosives, to kill people in "potentially deadly force situations," such as suicide bombings or active shooter situations.

"Robots could potentially be equipped with explosive charges to breach fortified structures containing violent, armed or dangerous subjects," a spokesperson for SFPD said, adding that the robots would be used only to "incapacitate, or disorient violent, armed or dangerous subjects who pose a risk of loss of life."

Let's Protect Our Children

On Dec 14, 2012, Adam Lanza walked into an elementary school and killed 26 people, 20 of them kids. On Valentine's day, 2018, Nicholas Cruz walked into a high, which he was a former student at, and killed 17 people. April 20, 1999, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris entered their high school with assault weapons, killing 12 students and one teacher. Later they would go on to kill themselves in the school library, where much of the massacre happened. I was one month away from graduating high school. At that time, no one worried about things like this. It was all so New to everyone. During the years between 1994 to 2004, there was an assault weapons ban, and during that time, you were 70% less likely to die in a mass shooting than today. So, why not bring it back? It wasn't so bad to ban assault weapons, so why is it now? Back when I was going to school, the only thing I worried about was my grades and if I was good enough for college. 

I never in my wildest dreams thought I would live to see the day where school shootings or any type of mass shooting would be a part of daily life. Right now, as I type type this, the US government is deciding whether or not to ban tiktok. TIKTOK!! Can you believe that?! My government believes banning books, drag shows, women's rights and tiktok are far more important than banning guns. We need to Project our children, they say. But they are not protecting our kids. I don't have kids, I have nieces and nephews that go to school. I much rather they read a book about the LGBTQ+ community and go to drag show, support my nieces and female cousins have an abortion and be on tiktok, than worry when they are off at school that some A**hole is going to come and murder them. When Columbine happened, assault weapons should have been banned right then and stayed that way. In 1997, Australia had a mass shooting and shortly thereafter the PM of that country told everyone to give up their AK type of guns and everyone did. There were no protests, no debates, NOTHING! And since there have been 0 mass shootings. Other countries have done the same when a mass shooting occurred in their country. Right now, if people aren't worried about getting vivid or whatever the latest disease is spreading, we are worried about getting killed. While shopping for Christmas in December, I had a mini panic attack at the store because I worried about things like this. Last week alone, my local news reported on all seven days, someone dying due to gun violence. Three were school shootings. It really is exhausting. I don't believe in arming the teachers with guns. for starters, what if a teacher lays the gun down and a student picks it up and plays with it and accidentally shoots another student? What if a teacher comes to school in a bad mood ( which can happen! ) and decides to shoot a student. We've all heard stories about students doing the same towards teachers, so why can't a teacher do the same? School shootings should not be a thing. Or any mass shooting. Thanks to our US government, the United States is the #1 country with the most mass shootings. And it sickens me that they care more about banning books, drag shows, and tiktok than our kids. This is not protecting our kids. No one is protecting our kids. Gun violence is now the leading cause of death among kids. Think about that, folks! I'm tried of living in fear. I'm tired of turning on the news or looking at the internet and seeing this kind of sh**. Let's do something! Let's fight for our kids!

   The Sol Invictus, (The Unconquered Sun, in Classical Latin) celebrated the born of a new Sun than defeated Darkness, making than days became larger: This feast, started at Dec. 22, till Dec. 25. (Exactly: The same day, than is celebrated today; as Christmas.) The Cult to The Sol Invictus, was mentioned until the 387 AD; and by the fifth century, there were still enough followers of The Sol Invictus; than Augustine of Hippo, preached against them!

    Saturnalia and Sol Invictus, were Festivities than were originated of South Europe; specifically, of Ancient Rome, (Today's Italy) and were the first Festivities; than Christian work hardly to eliminated. Now, you may wonder, ''Why this post?!''... Simple: 'Cause we shouldn't never forget, than we are still struggling for being respected as Pagans/Wiccans/Witches; including being able someday, to celebrates openly our Sacred Dates and Festivities without being mocked; persecuted, and/or being threated with violence or suffer threats; for expressing our faith. For The Roman Church, this was an big issue; so they decided to do the only thing than occurred to them...

There is not early, or trustful information; than said than Christ was borne in Dec. 25. (The Gospels, were wrote 70 years after Jesus left The Earth; and the more late an historic event is wrote, the less accurate became: Is not the same having all the information in paper, days; weeks, months, years, a decade or two... Than having the same information, disperse and mostly losed; after 20 years or more, when most witness have died; or have serious memory's troubles.) 

The Gnostics, (A belief sistem of The Primitive Christianity, than blends Greek Phylosophy with Jewish and Orientals Beliefs; including Magic) always celebrated Christ's Birth, but... The Celebration, was in Mar. 20: The start of Spring, in most of the years. For this, and many other reasons; The Church started to persecuted to The Gnostics, until they thoughted nobody was part of this menacing faith, anymore. (Maybe was too, because Women lead The Eucaristic’s Dinner, and lived in equality of rights with Men; in this Primitive Christian's Community?!... ''We will never know!... The story, talks about lovelies scenes with Angels, Shepherds and Animals; but doesn't mention snow, or any freezing phenomenon. (Why doesn't mention any of that, if all of this happened well inside; The Winter's Season?)

And, the most obvious detail, is than in those docummentaries; Today's Sheperds, were interviewed of how they handle their work in Winter; and... Surprise, surprise: They said, than they never works in Winter; because... ''The cold is so cruel, than is feel inside the bones!'' (And that was, when we started to see the dire effects of Climate's Change in The World, so... [People need to hear an kind word say to them, once a day; and recieved a hug once in a while, you know?!... 'Cause as Human Beings, we all need minimal shows of affection for our own mental's health; and feel we are loved and cared?!]) Anyway, Saturnalia and Sol Invictus left their mark in The Winter's Festivities; and even in popular representations: Sol Invictus, was represented as a young man with a radiate golden crown or golden rays; coming out of his head, in a chariot pulled by four white horses; and while Helios is said to be the owner of the same, the opinions points to Elagabalus; (The Arab-Roman Sun God, of Syrian Origin) or Malakbel, the Syrian God of Palmyra; as the pissible candidates. They were replaced in representations, with a savior than pulls four white horses; in most of The Ancient and Medieval Churches of Europe, North Africa and Minor Asia.  

    Saturnalia and Sol Invictus, are held in Today's Paganism; mostly in private. If you can make a least a little banquet with your Family, or with your Pagan Friends; under a friendly and joyful atmosphere, then... Consider yourself, as a very lucky person! (I hope to have the chances to do that myself, someday!)

    This is all in this post, hoping this year we will be more close; to fulfill our desire to being respected and being able to practices openly, (Or at least, find friends than shared our beliefs) and our right of belief being respected, and being protected by law and society; for being a religious minority, and for being; human beings.

“Strained by the need to finance its war machine, the Russian government said on Tuesday that it posted a $47 billion budget deficit in 2022, which is the second-highest since the break up of the Soviet Union.

The budget gap reached 3.3 trillion rubles in 2022, or 2.3 percent of the size of the Russian economy, Anton Siluanov, the country’s finance minister, said during a government meeting on Tuesday.

Russia’s revenues increased by 2.8 trillion rubles in 2022, or $40 billion, but that was not enough to cover rapidly increasing expenditures, which skyrocketed by 6.4 trillion rubles, or $92 billion, officials said.

The Russian economy performed above expectations, however, buoyed by high commodity prices. And some sanctions, like a $60 a barrel cap on the price for Russian oil, were introduced later in the year, softening their effect on the economy.”

“Forty-six per cent of the 167 experts responding to the think-tank said Russia’s failure or break-up could happen in the next 10 years. In a separate question, 40 per cent pointed to Russia as a country they expected to break up for reasons including “revolution, civil war or political disintegration” over that time.

“Ukraine clearly highlights the possibility of internal problems for Russia, and the possibility that the war itself might have boomerang effects for not only its leadership, but for the country as a whole,” said Peter Engelke, the Atlantic Council’s deputy director of foresight who helped to design and interpret the survey.

Western officials say Russia has been significantly weakened by its invasion of Ukraine 11 months ago, including by sanctions and export controls. Economists believe Russia’s productive capacity is steadily degrading as a result of the punitive measures, pushing the country back decades.

“Russia’s fossil fuel export revenues fell 17% last month to their lowest level since before the war began, according to a study published Wednesday by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), an independent think tank based in Finland that focuses on energy and pollution.

After the EU imposed new restrictions on Russian energy in December, Russia’s net energy export revenues declined €160 million ($172 million) a day. Russia continues to rake in huge amounts from its fossil fuel trade—around €640 million ($689 million) daily—but the study found that even stricter policies against Russian energy would deal a devastating blow to the country’s economy, and potentially weaken Putin’s ability to maintain his costly war in Ukraine.

As of Dec. 5, EU vessels can no longer transport Russian crude oil. The ban will be extended to all petroleum products on Feb. 5, which will slash Russia’s oil revenues by another €120 million a day, CREA estimated.

The sanctions have already dug deep into Russia’s oil revenues, as crude oil exports fell 12% in December while crude oil revenues fell by a whopping 32%, the study found. The decline comes as a massive blow to Putin, as oil was among his biggest cash cows at the beginning of the war, while fossil fuel revenues constituted the “financial bloodline for Putin’s war,” Svitlana Romanko, founder of Razom We Stand, an organization seeking a full embargo on Russian fossil fuels, said in a statement accompanying the CREA study.

A June study from CREA found that, of the €93 billion in fossil fuel revenues Russia collected during the first 100 days of the war, half came from crude oil and around two-thirds from all oil products.

Last month, the EU imposed a price cap on Russian oil at $60 a barrel thereby freezing transactions for Russian oil in markets covered by the cap at any price over that limit. The price cap has so far helped limit Russian oil revenues, the CREA study found, but the authors added that lowering the cap to $25 to $35 a barrel would create even more problems for Russia, while still keeping prices above what it costs to produce and transport Russian oil.”

.                                            ASHTON RECALLS        By Ashton Hester                COMMUNITY WELL SERVED RURAL SALEM RESIDENTS - (Last week I posted  a story written by Doris Rogers in 1977 regarding the death of Erby Bennett's mule, which he had owned for 40 years. Following is another story by Doris, in which Mr. Bennett was also involved. It was in the January 12, 1977 issue of the Keowee Courier. Due to its length, I am only posting half of the story this week and will post the second half next week). . .Days were lazy back then, especially summer days. . .Early in the morning on those summer days people of the Fall Creek community above Salem came to the community well to get their water for the day. Water to drink, water to cook with, for washing clothes, cars, for bathing and for watering the animals. . .And as they waited their turn at the windlass, the people dreamed and shared their hopes for the future. . .In 1935 this well was dug by the three Bennett boys, Vondiver, Erby and Oliver, and their friend Tommy Hancock. By hand, with picks, shovels, ropes and buckets, they worked their way down 55 feet to what was and still is the best-tasting water in the area. . .Over the years 15 families have been serviced by the community well--eight families at one time--which still has the original windlass. There in Bennettsville, Route 2, Salem, stands the provider and old friend, which now has a new cement-block box. . .Several times new residents wanted to put pumps into the well to prevent walking and carrying their buckets of water, but the two older Bennett men wouldn't allow it. Their reasoning was that unequal consumption would result in unfair advantages and would eventually leave the well dry. . .TO BE CONCLUDED NEXT WEEK

ADVENT SEASON: The 4th Advent Candle was lit on Sunday: The candle of Peace for all mankind.   On Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, the white center candle of Christ will be lit to welcome the Christ Child, Emanuel, God with us.  

SHARING:  Recently, I stood on my porch and looked at some maple trees I planted, from one gallon cans.  They are huge now.  Mixed with them now are oaks, pines, cedars and dogwoods.  All of the trees have a foliage that is green, but different shades of green depending on the season. We must take time during our busy lives and enjoy the wonders of Nature, God created.  Let us be thankful during this time as we celebrate the arrival of Jesus Christ,            AMARTIN    

O HOLY NIGHT:   The beloved Christmas song “O Holy Night” was banned from churches in 1847 because the poem was written by an atheist and French poet, Placide Cappeau, and composed by a Jew, Adolphe Adam.  Imagine the feelings you would never have experienced if that song of unity and serenity of Christ’s birth had never been heard.  The story is told in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871, a French soldier started singing “O Holy Night” on Christmas Eve. In the middle of battle, the soldier stood up, unarmed from his trench and faced the Germans as he began singing the hymn. Germans in return sang a carol of their own language. The war ceased for 24 hours, and soldiers from both camps celebrated Christmas before returning to battle.  Since 1933 the cherished hymn has gained wide acceptance.

Students do not “shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.”

On Dec. 16, 1965, a group of students — including organizer Bruce Clark (17 years old), Christopher Eckhardt (16 years old), John F. Tinker (15 years old), Mary Beth Tinker (13 years old), Hope Tinker (11 years old), Paul Tinker (8 years old) — wore black armbands to school to protest the war in Vietnam. The school board got wind of the protest and passed a preemptive ban. When the students arrived at school on December 16, they were asked to remove the armbands. When the students refused, they were sent home.

The students were suspended and told they could not return to school until they agreed to remove their armbands.

Represented by the ACLU, five of the students and their families embarked on a four-year court battle that culminated in the landmark Supreme Court decision: Tinker v. Des Moines. On February 24, 1969, the Court ruled 7-2 that students do not “shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.”

The Court ruled that the First Amendment applied to public schools, and school officials could not censor student speech unless it disrupted the educational process. Because wearing a black armband was not disruptive, the Court held that the First Amendment protected the right of students to wear one.[Z inn]
