5 Things To Know For Advanced Planning When You’re A Domestic Partner

Are you in a domestic partnership? Here are five advanced planning tips that will keep you in control of your partner’s affairs and funeral arrangements.

There are 17 million Americans that qualify as domestic partners (unmarried couples that are living together). What was once a pretty rare designation and living situation, is now becoming much more common. If the trend continues by 2040 around 21% of American adults will be domestic partners. 

Many people today find themselves in the position of domestic partner, but realize too late that the designation doesn’t guarantee much after your partner dies. A domestic partnership may be similar to a marriage in day-to-day life, but legally there are some key differences that become apparent after one partner passes. Those legal differences can dramatically impact the funeral services a domestic partner receives and the life of the surviving partner.

If you’re in a domestic partnership there are things you can do now to safeguard yourself and your partner so that you can be a beneficiary and continue making decisions like a spouse.

1 – Advanced Planning is Absolutely Necessary

The law isn’t exactly on the side of domestic partners in a lot of states. Generally, if no related documentation exists (like a will) then the decision making goes to the legal next of kin. They’ll also inherit any property and assets that’s solely in the name of the deceased. That can include a home, vehicles, land, stock and even cryptocurrency.

Domestic partners should discuss their wishes with each other, and then document those wishes so that they’re followed.

2 – Create a Last Will and Testament at Minimum

If you only do one thing it should be to create a last will and testament. As noted in point #1, domestic partners aren’t automatically given a say in body disposition and funeral arrangements under the law. They also don’t automatically inherit property, even if it’s the home they live in.

However, last will and testament directives take precedence over next of kin. If someone other than the deceased’s next of kin is named as the executor of the will, a beneficiary or in control of body disposition and funeral decisions then that person takes on the role.

3 – Sign a Legal Rights to Disposition Form

Let’s say all of the property is equally shared among two domestic partners and it’s also specified that upon death the surviving property owner would receive full ownership. There’s still the matter of funeral arrangements and body disposition.

You can specify who oversees disposition of your body using separate documentation. A Legal Rights to Disposition form is a simple and straightforward solution. The State of Texas even provides a template that can be used to assign an agent (the person handling the disposition).

4 – Buy Burial or Niche Space for Both Partners 

If you want your final resting place to be together in a cemetery or columbarium it’s best to purchase burial or niche space in advance. You can choose to each purchase a plot or niche that’s side-by-side or purchase one shared space together. It’s one of the precautions domestic partners can take to make sure their remains end up where they want.

5 – Share Your Plans With Close Loved Ones

In order to avoid potential disputes or arguments, you may want to let loved ones know about your advanced planning. Let them know how your domestic partner will be involved so that they are prepared. This is particularly beneficial for unmarried people with adult children or a parent that may assume they will be the key decision maker.

Two Women Died on an Alaska Mayor’s Property. No One Has Ever Been Charged. — ProPublica

Kirk and Norton, both Inupiaq, had each dated sons of the former borough mayor, and the sons had previously been convicted of beating each of them. One of the sons had admitted to strangling Kirk twice before. Another pleaded guilty to kicking Norton in the stomach when she was six months pregnant.

No one has ever been charged with a crime in connection to the deaths.

In a state where women are 2.5 times more likely than the national average to be killed by a man and Alaska Native women are especially at risk, elected leaders here have repeatedly pledged action. The Department of Justice declared a rural law enforcement emergency in Alaska following a 2019 report by the Anchorage Daily News and ProPublica on glaring lapses in local policing. Two years later, the governor created a state council on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons, and in 2022, new investigators were hired to solve cases like Norton’s.

Unexplained holes in the investigations into the deaths of Kirk and Norton call into question this commitment, a review by the Anchorage Daily News and ProPublica found. More than that, the events leading up to the women’s deaths illustrate how police, prosecutors and judges here have regularly given pass after pass to people accused of domestic violence and strangulation.

It's crazy how much feedee content is reblogged by people with "fat fetishists/feeders/feedees DNI" in their bios

Like, I think lots of people in the world are tummy lovers and fat admirers (bc it's inherently lovely as are all bodies) but the label of feedism (or specifically FEEDERISM) is seen as this manipulative and sick kink when... it's rly not. So many people seem to really be into soft feedism, but think that if gaining to immobility and health problems aren't involved that means it's no longer feedism? They don't see that extreme feedism is not what the majority of the community partakes in.

Not that extreme feedism is manipulative or bad either! But they're just so repulsed by the concept that they won't take any time to approach it and learn what it is. So they think there's no way for feedism to be practiced ethically and write it off entirely.

I think feedism and fat admiration in kink is something that people are going to need to evaluate and accept if we are ever going to get true fat liberation. It's okay to want to be fat, it's okay to be turned on by your fat body, and it's absolutely okay to be aroused by eating and/or getting fatter. Food and fat and body worship is the basis of feedism (in its simplest form) and I think none of that is inherently evil. If being fat makes you happy and horny, get fat.

aang being a bad parent is CHARACTER ASSASSINATION and i won't stand for it. i just know that him and katara wouldn't be focused on just passing on bending, but the *teachings* and ideals of both of their tribes to all their children, regardless of bending status.

OR, aang and katara become parents and aang finds out that parenting is his proudest achievement, more so than stopping a hundred year war or holding the position of avatar

Of all the battles he had fought as the Avatar, all the struggles through which he had prevailed, Aang thought that perhaps parenthood was his life’s true proudest achievement. He’d known from the moment Katara had found out that they’d be parents that she’d be a wonderful mother, but he’d be lying if he said that he had been entirely confident in his own abilities.

Their third child, Tenzin, had immediately been identified as an airbender by Aang. He told Katara that he could just feel it, he could see it in the way his son moved through the air , waving his hands as if the oxygen itself was a tangible thing he could touch. As Bumi grew up, it was clear that he would be much more calm and stern than his two rambunctious siblings, perhaps in an unconscious attempt to balance them out.

Aang taught him the airbending traditions the same way he continued to teach Tenzin’s siblings-  he brought the three, along with Katara when she could take a break from work, to the air temples to aid in their restoration. He taught Tenzin the airbending forms, but he taught him in a group, with his other two siblings. For Kya, the airbending forms were applicable to her own waterbending, and for Bumi, they were a way for him to better understand the flow of chi through the body and calm his energetic nature.

“Do you think they’re going to turn out alright?” Katara asked, and both pride and nervousness were present in her tone. “Are we doing a good job?”

Aang smiled softly at her, wrapping his arm around her smaller frame. “For a couple with only one parent between the two of us, I think we’re doing alright.”

Katara’s only response was a laugh and a splash of water to his face from the water she carried at her hip. She carefully bent it back into the bottle.

“They’re doing wonderfully.” Aang looked into the courtyard, where Kya and Bumi were locked in the mud, Kya bending mud-balls and Bumi throwing them back at her, while Tenzin tried in vain to get between them. “We have beautiful kids, Katara. Beautiful souls, too. The air nomad culture will live through them. It doesn’t matter if just Tenzin is an airbender- what the nomads would have wanted to be passed on is their way of life .”

Random time-travel au where Ice is stuck in 2022 for a week and mostly believes he's in a fever dream where he gets to some time with Maverick, an older version of it.

Of all the things Mav was expecting, finding his lap full of a sleepy Tom Iceman Kazansky isn't even on his list.

"Generally is the other way around" Mav chuckles, taking a sip of his coffee.

"Don't I know it," young Ice mumbles back, rubbing his face against his shirt. "It's just- so good be see you're got old Mav, that you got to be this solid and soft at the same time. I was afraid it wouldn't happen, " he shares it like it's a secret, and Mav finds himself speechless for a moment too long, while Ice snuggles against his chest and sights "so good to see you like this Mav", before kissing his shoulder. Mav can't do much if not hugging him back.

I was thinking about times when Sam and Dean have hurt each other, physically and not, when under the influence of something or not. I had a rough reaction to this scene. these characters get strangled on a regular basis, but having it done by their loved one, their partner, is another thing. I was choked by a partner too, in my 20s. with time I've come to realize how lucky I was things never escalated beyond that.

something that stood out to me was how Dean isn't fighting back, he's not even gripping Sam's arm tightly. which also made me realize how I didn't fight back either. I've had to sit with that for a while.

painting this let me try to reconcile my own personal history for a bit, and reconcile how Sam and Dean got past a moment like this. and how I didn't recognize the severity of my own experience, and moved past it without any repercussions other than doing everything I could do avoid provoking violence from my partner in the future. their world has the luxury of blaming the influence of demons and the forces of heaven and hell on their actions, and Sam and Dean's lives are submerged in violence. and it's a show, it's up to the writers to pick and choose what events traumatize the characters in any lasting way. this moment was a drop in the bucket.

I debated keeping these thoughts out of the painting post, because I know people don't necessarily want to hear about it, but it's part and parcel to why I drew it and I didn't want to separate the context.

tw domestic abuse

13 year old Jamie flinching when his dad puts his hand on his shoulder because the force of it makes him bend.

17 year old Jamie having a black eye for two weeks after his dads been around again and insisting he got it during a match and the ref just didn’t see.

19 year old Jamie in a serious relationship for the first time and she drags her nails down his arm hard enough to break skin in a small argument. She smacks his face three days later.

20 year old Jamie who’s just had a wine glass tossed at his head from a girl who thought he was cheating, he wasn’t but that doesn’t seem to matter.

21 year old Jamie who had a secret boyfriend for three months until he gets shoved into a wall for not wanting to be the first out player because ‘Jamie think of both our careers, we would be icons’.

23 year old Jamie who’s had maybe the healthiest relationship of his life with Keeley being at a bar for the first time after they break up, he gets his face slapped by a girl who thinks he was flirting with her boyfriend.

27 year old Jamie in a relationship with Roy and the first time they really argue he throws his hands in front of himself and closes his eyes when Roy gestures.

Roy fully freezes and steps four feet back and asks Jamie to open his eyes. Jamie who honestly didn’t realize his eyes were closed looks shocked. He asks Roy why he’s so far away now.

Roy looks like he’s about to cry, Jamie lunges to him holding his face asking what happened. Roy has to stutter out a ‘you flinched’ and now it’s Jamie’s turn to freeze. No one has ever brought up the flinching before, taken advantage of it? Yeah. Ignored it? Definitely. Asked in a voice that’s about to cry? No, no that’s new.

He insists he’s fine, he knows Roy would never hit him. Roy looks at him like he’s lost his mind and refuses to brush this off. They talk for hours, Jamie tells Roy everything. All the ex’s, everything his father has ever done, ex teammates who slapped backs too hard to be friendly.

Everything.

By the end they are both crying and Jamie has agreed to talk to a therapist. When they go to bed that night Roy is terrified to grab onto Jamie and pull him on top like he normally does. Jamie has no such issues and rolls right on top of Roy, head tucked into Roy’s neck like every night.

Taylor Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, says his friend + former teammate Tyreek Hill deserves “nothing but love.” Tyreek Hill is an abuser who attacked his pregnant girlfriend.

Yeah, you fucking heard that right. The boyfriend of Taylor Swift is friends with a domestic abuser and thinks he deserves “nothing but love.”

In 2014, Travis Kelce’s bestie, Tyreek Hill, was dismissed from Oklahoma State after he was arrested for choking his pregnant girlfriend and punching her in the stomach.

Despite committing such a heinous crime, the NFL drafted him in 2016, proving once again that they don’t give a SHIT about violence against women.

In 2019, Tyreek Hill was recorded THREATENING his fiancée and had apparently abused his child as well.

In addition, he was also accused of breaking another woman’s leg last year.

Hill has received no consequences for his actions, no jail time, not even a single game suspension.

Will the self-proclaimed feminist @taylorswift dump her boyfriend for being friends with an abuser, or was she only a “feminist” for a few eras to sell albums? Unfortunately, I think we all know the answer to that one.
