Lost Footage: Laura Bell Bundy as Elle Woods in the 1st US National Tour of Legally Blonde the Musical

This is the last 22 mins of the show and the only known video footage of LBB playing Elle in the US tour!

What is of particular interest to me is that this includes LBB's performance of the ballad without the door. I personally believe that there should be a door (a physical barrier) between Elle and Emmett when this song is performed so that Elle can't hear Emmett confess his love for her (the way it was played on Broadway). In the US tour version, Emmett confesses directly to Elle in the room, and she hears him.

However, I think that LBB's performance of this doorless version is quite beautiful. There are two distinct pauses she make during this piece (the music even stops with her). The first time is to touch D.B. Bonds' face (Emmett) with one hand (similar to how she touches Christian Borle's face before escaping into her room in the Broadway version). The second pause is to cradle his face with both of her hands before pulling him into a hug.

Even though I will always be a proponent of having the door during the ballad, I really love LBB's take in this performance. It is truly the only version of it that I like so far, and I actually kinda wish we could see her do this specific performance with Christian Borle.

recently encountered a post where someone said "gender is fluid but sexuality isn't". (they were talking about bi lesbians.)

my first thought was: does that person, like. hear what they're saying? how can you explicitly hold two beliefs that are so logically inconsistent and not see it? how can you simultaneously think gender is this fluid and complex thing, but sexuality, much of which is defined around gender, is simple and stationary and its boundaries need policing?

but like, fuck, why even argue against it, right? there is no internal logic because there is no logical thought behind it. these are not genuine beliefs. this person is repeating what is currently acceptable in their (small) specific social circle. this is the same person who, a few years back, would be excluding nonbinary lesbians, but nonbinary lesbians are cool and normal on queer tumblr now, so they'll exclude bi lesbians instead, and not even pause to reflect on the difference.

oh, and if you read this and thought "these people don't even actually accept nb lesbians either", ding ding ding! because it's not a real, deep belief, that acceptance is extremely shallow and conditional. so as soon as someone is an nb lesbian in a way these people find odd (like being both a man and a lesbian) they will exclude them too and find a way to justify it.

why do we have to endlessly go through this cycle with queer identities. can we not? can we just not. i'm tired.

I hate to be this person, but I am not at all into the idea that VM could “rescue” Vax from the Matron or “get him back” and force a happy ending. I find it cheap and I’m going to greatly dislike it as a storytelling choice if it happens. I think it would undermine one of the more meaningful and difficult narratives in CR and do a disservice to the story they told in 2017.

I am growing increasingly tired of the way certain sections of the MCYT fandom treats QPRs and non-romantic relationships as if they're inherently within Creator Boundaries. This is both ignorant of what QPRs are, and willfully avoids considering boundaries as anything beyond a useful checklist to bludgeon other fans with.

QPRs can look like friendships, friends with benefits, kink relationships, life partners, and a million other things. They can appear identical to romantic relationships from the outside. They can include sex. It's frustrating seeing QPRs morphed into Schrodinger's Platonic Relationship in fandom, where people write what is functionally just traditional romantic ship fic but still get to yell at other people for Breaking Creator Boundaries.

It feels like the assumption is "Romance might upset creators, but as long as it's platonic it's fine." As if a QPR fic where characters spend the whole time cuddling, or even a fic where they're assigned as family and are written to have a non-existent sibling relationship, wouldn't also be deeply weird & off-putting to creators. (I know many people don't approach creating fan content with creators in mind, but for those who evidently do it seems deeply odd to pretend that romance is taboo but cuddling/whump/etc are inherently unobjectionable.)

A fic where someone gets Overcome By Instincts and kidnaps another character to (platonically!!1!1!) force them to cuddle is way weirder than just having them kiss. Which is fine! It's fine to be weird! The problem is assuming that an ABO fic w/ the serial numbers filed off is inherently More Pure and palatable to creators just because it uses an & instead of a /, and in incorrectly redefining an entire complex relationship category to 'sexless off-brand romance that won't get me cancelled on Twitter'.

i’m on my phone so i can’t easily link, but i tagged the poll with it so you can click the tag on my blog and see. short version is that i have VERY strong feelings about the use of a door being between elle and emmett in the ballad scene, and get very upset when scenes omit the door as it was in the original broadway production, and even more upset when they straight up have emmett saying “what about love” directly TO elle.

Like buddie's not happening (no matter how romantic almost hitting your friend for having feelings is) and if Tommy's not in the next episode? From what I've been able to find, it does seem that the dialogue in the Japanese version of the TTYD remake has also been rewritten to make it more clear that Vivian is trans. Like... "I have a boy's body, but my heart is a cute girl's!" is probably not how someone identifying as male would describe themselves, I don't know how much more obvious it could be that Vivian is a trans woman.

Which is why you're still seeing people cite the Gamecube version as proof that Vivian being trans is "woke localizers ruining Japanese media", because the actual Japanese text of the remake does not back up their argument that Vivian is a censored femboy.

Gee, it's almost like the original game was made 20 years ago, and was very much a product of its time in regards to Vivian's gender.

Tbh i am not surprised that a person who openly talked about having drinking problems since 1d days, because of how crazy 1d worked has been agressive. What surprises me is people being surprised (they never seriously saw drunk person?). But i am also confused about this whole book. Apparently Maya said that that book is not fully bout Liam but compilation about her exes and some of the worst parts are not about him. But recently she said that the book is “ofc about him” so what is true then? Or did she meant it that ofc some parts are about him or that whole book is about him?

I also am not surprised- we've learned so much more about the real stories of things and about the guys' actual lives over the last years, and the story that has unfolded around Liam has been totally consistent throughout if you've been following it, and so the information Maya is telling us is shocking and upsetting but not difficult to believe. I got an anon yesterday saying they were worried about getting similar revelations about the other boys, like "if Liam could be doing this we just don't know, any of them could", and while in a way that's always true I guess, anyone could be doing anything in private like... that doesn't really concern me. Because none of these Liam revelations are coming out of nowhere, there have been many MANY steps along the way leading us here if you've been watching, and he has talked openly about both his mental health struggles and his addiction issues. So to answer that anon... to find out something similar about Louis would in contrast contradict everything we know about him and no I'm not worried about it. Is he an abuser or a loose cannon, well that news would truly shock me to my core, I will be honest. But anyway as for the book I don't find it strange that she was nervous when it came out and treading lightly and later decided, fuck it. In the absolutely on point tiktok she dropped today (YES👏GIRL👏FUCKING TELL THEM👏) she even mentions attempts to keep her from publishing the book, presumably by Liam's team, that I am riveted by and cannot WAIT to hear more details about actually- like I said I don't find it at all strange that she was nervous and downplayed it a bit then. But if she says now that it's just about Liam, well, I would say it's been clear from the beginning that the book is their story. Maya herself brought up the parallel of songs being written about stuff and I think it's the same thing; it's true (she was in an abusive relationship that involved certain kinds of events) but maybe not 100% literal (I'm sure details were changed to make the story work, it's not like a word for word timeline of their interactions or whatever).

I’m new the the Smosh/Damangela fandom and just saw your post on the newest TNTL. Who is Damien dating? I thought he was single haha.

I've learned about this all in the past like week, but it's speculated that he's dating (or at least was dating) this person named Chel who's also been accused of stalking and scamming and stealing a bunch of money by a few people. It's uncertain if he knew all of this when he first started talking to her though.

Oh, Anon. When I tell you that I got genuinely emotional reading this...truly, I don't even know where to start. My experience in this fandom over the past several months has on occasion felt like drowning, so this message is like coming to the surface for a breath of desperately needed fresh air.

GO and Michael/David came into my life in 2019, at a time when things in my previous fandom had become indescribably awful. The show and Michael and David were/continue to be such a source of inspiration and joy for me, and are the reason I've met so many lovely people and forged so many meaningful friendships. Michael and David helped me so much with getting through lockdown and the pandemic as well, and they are also what got me back into writing fanfic by sparking back a creativity that I thought was gone after a years'-long dry spell.

So the fact that you see me, that you get where I am coming from without me needing to explain myself over and over, and appreciate what I am doing and chose to send this message letting me know that means the absolute world. Thank you, thank you, from the bottom of my heart... ❤️

@matthewbroderick pointed me in the direction of this video, and while it SEEMS like a very important argument, it is inherently flawed. The issue with there being no door isn’t that it seems like Elle is rejecting Emmett, but because it makes Emmett come off like an asshole. Prior to the Door moment, Emmett starts to say “Elle you should know -” and it’s clear it’s about to be a love confession, but then Elle says that Callahan hit on her and Emmett immediately stops. 

With door: When Emmett sings “what about love?” it’s more to himself, a sort of aside. It lets Emmett have an emotional moment, lets the audience know for sure that he loves her. We get the gorgeous juxtaposition of Elle and Emmett both in so much pain on either side of the door. It’s ALL. GOOD.

Without door: He’s just heard that Elle has been assaulted by Callahan, and he directly says, “What about love?” Like “the timing’s bad, I know” is the understatement of the century. Without a door separating them, he is saying “I know you just got assaulted, but um hey I love you, so, it’s okay” basically. There is no respect for her boundaries. It’s a fucking gross-ass move.
