All You Need to Know About Matchups!
CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE WAITLIST
Hi y'all!
This account is solely for matchups for several different fandoms. That means requests for imagines, oneshots, headcanons, etc. will NOT be taken.
Here are some basic things to know about requesting a matchup!
Unless otherwise specified for a certain fandom, a request yields one romantic pairing AND one friendship pairing as well as information on why I think you work well with the individuals I choose. Of course, if you only wish to receive either just the romantic matchup or just the friendship matchup, just let me know!
You can request matchups for several different fandoms at once! For each fandom you request, I will match you up with one romantic partner and one friend unless you request differently.
You can ask to exclude any character(s)!
Where can I request a matchup?
Requests can be made in the MATCHUP REQUESTS/ASK ME ANYTHING tab.
What do I need to include in my request?
Required
Fandom(s)
Your gender and/or pronouns
Your sexual orientation and/or preferences
Description of personality
Optional (but definitely helps me out!)
Description of appearance
Hobbies
Personality alignment (Myers-Briggs, Enneagram, Hogwarts House, etc.)
What you would look for in a partner and/or friend
Any other information you think would be helpful – the more you provide, the more I can work with!
Now with that out of the way, onto the fandoms!
Listed directly below is a shortlist of all the fandoms I take requests for as well as some extra information as needed.
Disclaimers
If a title is in italics, it means that while I feel comfortable providing matchups for this show, I have not watched every season. If a character drastically changes after a certain point, I may not be aware. The last season I watched of these shows will be included in parentheses.
All movies/shows based on novels will most likely focus on the on-screen adaptations of characters.

DR. JOHANNA “JOHN” WATSON ( he / they ) - aisha tyler
John, or Anna to his wife, was, in his previous life, the biographer and recorder of Sherlock Holmes’ many adventures -- among other things. Somewhere later on in their partnership, John met the woman he would eventually go on to marry, Mary. Overall, John is described by most as friendly, gentlemanly, and full of heart. Nowadays, he enjoys being father of three adopted children and spouse to his lovely wife. He currently teaches some classes at Oxford in his downtime.
NOTES: John is a he / they lesbian and also AFAB. He identifies as nonbinary, due to his rejection of traditional femininity, but does not identify as a transman.
SHERLOCK HOLMES ( he / him ) - hugh laurie
Sherlock retired a decade ago and currently tends to beehives in the countryside of England and avoids too much stress. Much like James, the man did not walk away unscathed from the fall from Reichenbach Falls. He struggles with nerve damage in his leg and his shoulder that can make things hard from time to time. He is currently together in a civil partnership with his long-time friend inspector Lestrade ( played by Stephen Fry ).

Question for all who'd like to answer it: what's your favorite musical?
Anonymous,
I would like to assume your intelligence, but for the purposes of this question and the intended audience, I find I have the sorry task of explaining the meaning of the word musical so that I may better ascertain the intention of your question.
-ical is added to the end of the word to form an adjective meaning “of or pertaining to.” Musical is pertaining to music. From that, I can infer you are inquiring as to my tastes in music. I believe my friend and colleague Dr. Watson has chronicled in the past that I have a preference for German music. I am a violinist myself and a great lover of Opera. I enjoy Mendelssohn, Wagner, Offenbach, although despite my preferences, I do widely credit Paganini as an extraordinary virtuoso. I would continue, as the young people would benefit from learning the great composers, however a case currently holds my attention.
Yours,
Sherlock Holmes
Tumblr media
From the Desk of Dr. John H. Watson:
Dear Anonymous,
Allow me to begin by thanking you sincerely for your letter. It was my idea to open a line of communication with the public. Holmes was entirely against it, but I am both pleased, and must wholly apologize, for his letter. He never misses a chance to show off.
I must admit that I am quite perplexed by your question, and would not have understood fully if not for Holmes explaining to me, which is why he wrote that unnecessary lesson on adjectives in your letter. I admit that Holmes and I have much the same interest in music, and he graciously plays some of my favorites on the violin when his mind is not occupied by a case. We enjoy attending operas together, and just recently returned from a splendid performance of Don Giovanni. Holmes was highly critical calling it, “Too Italian.” I realize that a story inspired by the lascivious Don Juan would not appeal to my friend who prides himself on abstaining from such base desires. As a doctor, I frequently inform him that it is quite healthy. He laughs.
I hear Holmes calling for me now. We are currently investigating a gruesome murder that three individuals have nearly admitted to. Who is lying? Who is telling the truth? What are they hiding that all three are risking prison? Holmes is near to closing this fascinating case.
Best,
Dr. John H. Watson

Hi Anon!
My (Toasty) favorite musical is the Phantom of the Opera. I’ve been completely obsessed with the original novel by Gaston Leroux since I was 16. Although I am always aggravated by the changes in adaptations of my favorite novels, I really enjoy the music, the sets, and the overall theme of Webber’s musical. BUT WHERE’S THE DAROGA. Other than that, I really love Hamilton, and I hope I get the chance to see it someday. I entered the lottery everyday when it was near me but no dice! Oh well!
Vice’s favorite musical is Sweeney Todd. There’s no place like London! She’s not available to provide further details, but she loves Alan Rickman. She ganders at him. (Edit: Vice here providing further details. I just love the songs! Worst Pies in London, Poor Thing, Green Finch and Linnet Bird, Johanna, MY FRIENDS! I think I got them all. They’re just so catchy and singable and I find myself whistling them quite often!)
Tumblr media
Thanks for the question!

A little about myself.
My name is Dr. Johanna H. Watson, but I go by Johnnie. (Please do not call me Johanna). I am a retired Army Doctor whom fought three years in Afghanistan. I am now living at 221B with the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. We solve crimes, and I blog about it, and I hope you find it entertaining. That’s it in a nutshell. My life is pretty straight forward, but also with some action.

The Cold Case
They’d found everything they could.
Bucky’s history had been fairly easy to pretty much fully investigate; his military service and the records from the other Howling Commandos, as well as his family had given them as clear a picture as possible until his memories returned.
Irene’s information hadn’t been so easy. They only had the clue from Bucky’s memorial in the Smithsonian exhibit, that they’d been married in London, to go on. She herself had some small hints, a language that she recognized but he didn’t, and the faint memories of a crowded bar. Not enough. The language turned out to be Welsh, but not just people from Wales were fluent in it, not even back in the 1940′s, and it turned out HYDRA had done very thorough work in getting rid of almost all her records. The only thing they’d been able to find was a cold case of her disappearance in 1944.
They needed help.
The names of Sherlock Holmes and Johanna Watson seemed commonplace in London, and the man at the records office had suggested they try them. Their search for their “ancestor’s” information, and the mystery surrounding her, may be enough to perk the consulting detective’s interest.
So it was that she and Bucky found themselves on the doorstep of 221B Baker Street, ringing the doorbell, and hoping that their ‘case’ would be interesting enough, while at the same time worried that any investigation could bring HYDRA down on their heads.
-------
Johanna’d just come down from her room when the doorbell rang. Meeting Sherlock’s eyes she nodded and, rather than come into the living room as she’d planned, turned and continued down to the main landing. Mrs. Hudson had gone out to do some shopping, so it was only the two of them in.
As she descended the stairs, the blonde found herself hoping that the client, or clients, would have a good case. They weren’t short on people needing help, just on ones that really interested her flatmate. Most often the people that had come in had cases that he solved within minutes. Still, at least the wedding preparations were helping keep him busy so he wasn’t experiencing fits of boredom as bad as he used to when there was a lack of cases.
Opening the door the doctor was met with the sight of a man and woman, both with brown hair, and dressed casually. She gave them a smile, holding out a hand to shake.
Tumblr media
“Good morning, here for Sherlock Holmes?”
Irene nodded, returning the smile and handshake. She recognized the woman from the bit of research she and Bucky’d done before coming here as Dr. Watson.
Tumblr media
“Yeah, we were hoping he could help us. I’m Irene, and this is my brother, Bucky. We’ve...got a bit of an interesting case.”
Since starting to look into herself Irene and Bucky’d found it best to say that they were siblings. It was easier to help explain why they had the same last name, and that they were named after their grandparents. Certainly resulted in less questions than saying she was looking for information about herself.
“The more interesting the better. Come on up”
Johanna held the door open, gesturing the siblings up the stairs and following behind them after shutting the door.

Neville Shulman Challenge Award: ‘Hugging the Coast’
youtube
2012 Neville Shulman Challenge Award recipient Dr Johanna Wadsley (now a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Geography Department of the Open University) has published an audio slideshow as part of the Open University’s Geography Matters collection. The resource was developed from a research expedition Dr Wadsley undertook called ‘Hugging the Coast: an exploration by sea kayak of liminal living in the Sangihe Archipelago, North Sulawesi, Indonesia’. Dr Duika Burges Watson (Newcastle University), was co-recipient of the award and a fellow expedition member. The slideshow is entitled, ‘Coping on the Coast: moral economies and liminality at the heart of things that matter’.
You can find out more about Dr Wadsley’s research here.
The next deadline for the Neville Shulman Challenge Award is 30 November 2017.

Some Female Holmes&Watson
I keep being surprised how many cisswapped/genderbent/whatever-you-call-it-these-days Holmes webseries or online-based adaptations there’ve been in recent years. I thought I’d make a little masterpost of them, for myself and anyone who’s interested. FAIR WARNING: This includes my own opinions which are not always positive; don’t let that influence you if you don’t want to.
So far I’ve found:
In Hot Pursuit / По горячим следам (2013), the only one of them that is set in the Victorian Era! The costumes and scenery look amazing. There is no sound except the overlaid music, and all the dialogue is set in subtitles – a strange choice, but okay. Both the actresses for Holmes and for Watson appealed to me a lot; Watson especially. Holmes looks suitably... beautiful, but at the same time kinda unkempt? It’s neat. Her dress code and the way she does (or rather doesn’t) do her hair is subtly but noticeably unconventional for her time, and while it’s no masterpiece, this little film definitely gets a thumbs-up from me.
The Adventures of Jaime Watson (and Sherlock Holmes) is a webseries I’ve only just started to look into, but I’m rather liking it so far. There are a LOT of episodes, but they’re very short, just a few minutes each, and it follows the same format that most of the other Modern-AU webseries do: a series of webcam-videos taken by Watson, as she gets to know this weird new flatmate of hers.  I like both these girls, and a part of it I think has got something to do with how utterly normal they are. They could be any young college students you’d run across in real life, too, and I think it’s charming. The acting is solid, and the story & characters easy to get into and very likable so far! BONUS: Jaime Watson is queer and this is explicitly stated withing the first few minutes of the show. No idea about Sherlock as far as I’ve watched, but there’s a chance she might be, too. (And listen, pals and gals, if this STILL doesn’t mean that these two get together in the end, then I declare the entire pan-Holmesiana officially cursed. HUNDREDS of adaptations and not a SINGLE one--- ok I don’t wanna get off topic here). (EDIT: Ok then, it’s decided, it’s officially cursed. To be clear: Not that I mind this Sherlock being aro/ace at all. But still. C U R S E D.)
Baker Street, I watched a while ago and don’t really remember much of it, though I guess liked it well enough. It’s three episodes, following College students Sherlock Holmes and Jane Watson as they mean and start to solve crimes together. Unfortunately, this adaptation plays its cards entirely straight, which I couldn’t help but find a bit of a let-down.
Herlock.  Jonny Watts and Sheridan Hume. So... okay. (Rant incoming, you’ve been warned.) Okay, see, it wasn’t bad. But it’s... I think it’s the format maybe? Something feels wrong about the story development and pacing to me. It’s too rushed. Things which should make me feel something just don’t. When Jonny’s boyfriend accuses her for being in love with Sheridan and treats her “obsession” with her like something that’s been going on for a worryingly long amount of time when it has, in reality, barely been a few hours? When Jonny then sits there and I can see that I’m supposed to get that this is somehow true and Jonny is just denying it to herself, after one Skype conversation? It’s supposed to be all profound or something, but instead it just feels like I’m getting hit over the head with things that don’t hit home. The messages about the Evil SexismTM were way too heavy-handed. Jonny was going on my nerves very quickly. I would have appreciated her to be more grounded and steadfast, not so hyper and flustered, not so obsessed. Actually I would appreciated her to be less good at crime solving. Less useful, if you will, than she was. Which may sound strange, and I know (and DO like!) that the newer Holmes adaptations are all about the teamwork and Holmes/Watson partnership appreciation, but I feel like they missed the point. The point which is that a Watson may (and will, and should) learn about the crime solving and deduction stuff as they become more involved in it, but the initial attraction, the spark that passes, between every pair of them, every time, is made of different stuff. It’s companionship. A warmth that was missing before, and that is needed, always, more than they know. I didn’t get that feeling here. I’m mostly disappointed because I do want to support and love the different sorts of adaptations that are starting to crop up online. This one has even insinuated very clearly that they’re going for a H/W direction in the future, and not even that gets me more excited about it, and that is honestly tragic. (It also seems that there won’t be any future installments, which renders the point moot.)
S(her)lock - the Webseries “is a feminist, LGBTQA positive, fresh take on the characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  Living in New England in 1995, Sherlock Holmes investigates domestic cases with her companion, Dr. Johanna Watson — only the public has no idea!  Detective Lestrade claims credit for all her greatest accomplishments.  Can Holmes and Watson foil their foe and reclaim credit for their work?”  I haven’t checked this one out yet, which is why I’m copy-pasting the official description in here. What I know: This production has a trans woman as Watson and a drag queen as their landlord/lady, going alternately by Mr. Hudson and Mrs. Turner (which is kind of a stroke of genius, I have to say). Definitely one to keep in mind.

so apparently there’s gonna be a Finnish tv show called ‘Sherlock North’ which features Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Johanna Watson and while the show isn’t going to even begin shooting until winter 2018, a certain fandom is already angry abt it existing
which proves that time is a flat circle and even when a shitty show baits them it’s ~more progressive~ than letting Watson be a woman

20 Last(ish) Lines
Ahem. So back in October, I did a first-lines exercise, and then @amatara said she wanted to do a last-lines version and asked if I would do it with her. And I said sure, but it’d probably be a few days until I got to it. ...and then a few days turned into a few months, apparently. (Sorry, amatara! It was mostly all drafted? I’m not sure why it’s spent three months languishing in my drafts folder? My life is a mystery even to me?)
Anyway, these are the same twenty stories I used for the first-lines exercise; I’m ignoring the handful of things I’ve published since then, because I am lazy, lazy. In cases where the last line makes absolutely no sense on its own, I include the line or two before it.
1. “Yes, she does [like marmalade],” I agreed—although Holmes liked it somewhat more—and I began removing his chemical equipment to my room. (Baker Street Papas, Whitehead Holmes)
2. Mac laughed, and gathered the exhausted girl closer in her arms. (Recommended by Galen and Avicenna, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries)
3. I flicked my own stub into the coals and sat back to listen proper, not much caring what he played, just so long as I got to lay there listening to it. (Desperate Men and Fools, ACD x Strange Empire)
4. RAYMOND (CON’T): Happy Valentine’s Day, Kevin. KEVIN: And to you, Raymond. (The Way Lovers Do, With The Puzzle, Brooklyn 99)
5. And Furiosa thinks, Oh, that’s why. (Fingers, Mad Max: Fury Road)
6. “I told you, it’s not broken,” she scolds, and the two of them spend the rest of the walk home planning Danny Gilpatrick's downfall. (Terrible Sisters, Supergirl)
7. And Rey went to find Finn, deciding that yes, even surrounded by all her command staff and an entire base of Resistance fighters, General Leia Organa had been waiting for Rey to come back. (Welcome Home, Star Wars: The Force Awakens)
8. "Suits you," Poe grins. One thumb strokes the base of Finn's skull above the collar. "Can't wait for her to see you in it." (Lined with Love, Star Wars: The Force Awakens)
9. Buoyed to the sound of his violin, I let myself drift, my Mary’s dear face before me. (Brandy and Soda, The Seven-Per-Cent Solution)
10. “With luck, we’ll be able to catch the evening tide.” (Particular Debts, The Seven-Per-Cent Solution)
11. Johanna Mason had three months. She knew exactly how much damage a sawblade could do. (From the Woods: The Wolves and Woodcutters Remix, The Hunger Games)
12. Joan blinked at the ceiling a few moments, then hit ctrl-Q and dragged the file, all 474 pages of it, to the recycle bin. (Crowd Around: The ‘And I, My Best Friend’ Remix, Elementary)
13. He marked them, and guarded them, and waited for the changing wind when Watson—perhaps this one he knew, or some future version he couldn’t yet envision—would seek to have them restored to her. (For the Sake of the Trust (The Stratigraphic Predecessor Remix, Elementary)
14. Whatever man brought [that Marshall’s star] into that whorehouse, he clearly didn’t deserve to have it. Kelly reckoned the woman who wanted them to call her Ma maybe did. (Stars are for Wishing On, Strange Empire)
15. And with that, we settled in to making sense of Dr Watson’s dates. (A Handsome and Generous People, Sherlock Holmes in the 23rd Century)
16. In a few, happy hours I would once again have Truth to test myself against: exacting, unpredicted, and glorious. (On Verity and Verisimilitude, Star Trek: The Next Generation)
17. ‘I wish you to take me sailing, Lady Maria. If at all possible, tonight.’ (Setting the Sail, ACD Holmes)
18. She looked out at the horizon then, smiling. I did, too, as I held her hand and waited to see what would come up on the other side of it. (As Safe as Houses, Strange Empire)
19. Rebecca shut her eyes again to better listen to Kat’s voice. (Kissing Day, Strange Empire)
20. “Excellent,” he beamed, standing aside for her. “And as soon as we finish here, I have another project upstairs which requires your urgent assistance.” (Cabin Fever, Elementary)
I’m not sure how well one can evaluate the last line in isolation -- ideally, it acquires its meaning from the entire story that went before it, does it not? For example, #11 is the culmination of an eight-thousand word extended metaphor about people, saws, and wood; that line gets all of its power from the relentless priming that went before. On the flipside, there’s a couple of these where it doesn’t matter one whit to me if the last line is any good or not. (The satisfaction in a PWP doesn’t come from the author nailing the final line, after all.)
Overall, I’m much happier with my final lines than my first lines, mostly because I work far harder on them. I might perhaps be embarrassed that #3 and #9 have virtually the same ending -- Watson listening to Holmes playing his violin -- except that I’m using it to different ends in each, and anyway, there are so many Holmes and Watson adaptations that end with Watson listening to Holmes playing his violin; if I have to be embarrassed about using that shorthand, then so do they.
