Dragonbite Viper

Threw in drawing a design for this fantasy snake species as well for funsies. Thank you for over 700 followers! I'm really happy people are enjoying this fun little side project I've been doing in my free time. I'm going to be taking another break to recuperate and work on other art projects for a bit before drawing the arc 2 dragons. Until then, keep your eyes peeled for any more adopts, bases or other goodies I may post in the mean time :3c

How dragonbite vipers are drawn in the wof graphic novel isn't a god damn viper!!!!! The only thing it got right was it's spikey scales

here's queen oasis displaying a natural sandwing defense mechanism, their frills are retractable and can be flared out alongside displaying their wings and tail to appear bigger to threats. i wonder what's got her so agitated?

right, so, as someone in an advanced lit class, I can not stop analyzing the fuck out of WOF characters.

especially mother fucking SUNNY.

what does she represent?

UNITY AND POWER

Let me explain. Sunny is quite literally the first ever hybrid in the books. She's written as an outcast, even in her own group, because the others veiw her as weak and incapable. Despite this, she has the ability to subtly push her friends in the right direction, frustratingly though she had to go through others. unwillingly, she is made to be reliant on others.

this is what makes her book so immensely interesting to me. Despite being seen as weak and defenseless, she does what No one else has the (metaphorical) balls to do.

She walks into what is basically the mob to ask strangers for mercy and help, offers to help said murder strangers with an immediate issue (dragonbite viper), then when threatened by a much older dragon who's using basically a 10 year old as leverage she goes with them willingly, instructing the ONE AND ONLY WITNESS to say nothing at all. THEN she survives using nothing but her wit in what has to be the most dangerous dragons lair and then escape with very little aid.

THEN she had the courage to fave said dragon again.

That's POWER. the ability to push through struggles and become loud.

what about unity?

her mother and the outclaws united to find her, she started JMA, she was the first to speak up about a lot of issues, she stepped forward to take care of Aukelts egg without hesitation. She not only physically represents unity through being a hybrid but also through her actions.

Yet another reason T. T. Sutherland is a coward and a fool for going "Peril has never been touched in battle before, the dragonflame cactus was her first time experiencing real pain" and I refuse to accept it as canon:

Cooler Headcanon: the reason Peril immediately had the idea of burning the venom out of Clay's wound when he got bitten by the Dragonbite Viper was because she's had to do that to herself after getting puncture wounds from sandwings that injected venom past the superheated layer of skin. It didn't do as much damage to her as it did to Clay because Peril's pretty much completely fireproof even under the skin, so the scars are pretty small and not that noticeable, but she does have a few.

The couple times she de-venomed herself during a battle were pretty much the most metal thing ever to happen in Scarlet's arena. A dragon getting an apparently mortal wound, jamming her claws right into the open wound, writhing on the sand in apparent death throes, and then after like a minute getting back up with "smoke" rising from her eyes and nose as well as the bloody, sizzling puncture, and proceeding to limp across the arena and utterly destroy her terrified opponent.

The dragons she was fighting didn't try to finish her off because they'd already severely burned their tail barbs and probably talons and wings doing it and weren't going to risk getting hurt even worse by a dying dragon. Then of course when their one hope of killing her turned out not to work they kind of lost the will to live.

This contributed significantly to Peril's reputation as an invincible monster, but on the other hand seeing the queen's champion curled in a fetal position, screaming, sobbing and obviously trying not to pass out, made some of the spectators present for those fights somewhat remember that this was a 2-3 year old dragonet being thrown in the arena with full grown adult enemy soldiers, which was pretty messed up even if the small child kept winning. These feelings of sympathy were often diminished a bit by what Peril did to her opponents afterward, but Queen Scarlet was still not pleased, and after it happened two or three times she got a supply of the antidote cactus for "if a guard accidentally gets gotten by a sandwing prisoner" purposes.

Ruby absolutely never saw this because she made a point of watching fights in the arena as little as possible, especially Peril's for obvious reasons.

On the other hand I just thought of the perfect explanation for why Carnelian was like "I wonder if she remembers me?" when Peril showed up at JMA instead of freaking out like most of the dragons there. At some point, early in her career as a child soldier before she ended up in Ruby's unit, she was working in the palace and got voluntold to help out during an incident when Peril got stabbed in the shoulder or something where she couldn't reach with her claws so somebody had to very carefully burn the venom out with a red hot nail and a pair of tongs. Carnelian's actual job was probably something like holding a bucket of water and pouring it on the spear haft a third dragon was holding Peril's wing closed with, but she met Peril in a vulnerable state when she wasn't trying to perform for the crowd, and also saw her trying really hard to avoid accidentally injuring anyone, which led to her being one of a small number of skywings who are capable of being normal about Peril.

Squid: Small scars from a skirmish with Mudwings Dragonnets in book 1, Gill scar from Deathbringer, Wing shoulder scars from Kinkajou holding onto him in book 3, Legs scars from fighting with sandwings dragonnets in book 5. Has 8 gold horn rings.

Glory: All scars from her time at Ashfall island and her trying to get rid of her shackles. 1 flower crown and 2 flower necklaces made of morning glories and starflowers. 2 earings made of glass beads, representing all dods and alternative dods. More vibrant then at the start of the arc.

Flame: Face scar from trying to scratch out Grandeur's venom after an accident in book 3, Muzzle scar from Deathbringer, Neck scar from Seawing guards in book 2 (mistaken him for a Skywing soldier during the Summer Palace attack), Shoulder scar and front leg scar from fighting Nightwing guards to save Glory in book 3, Back leg scar from trying to fight Blister in book 5, Tail base scar from trying to fight Burn to save Sunny and Viper in book 5, Tail scar from a skirmish with the Mudwings Dragonnets in book 1. Wears 4 silver horn wings, as well as a red scarf.

Starflight: All scars from his last fight with Morrowseer, made him blind in both eyes. Wears a dark blue silk blindfold as well as neck wrappings made of the same material, with 3 silver earings as well as a bracelet made off silver beads he plays with when anxious.

Fatespeaker: Somehow escaped obtaining any scars during this arc. Wears 3 silver teardrops earing, 2 fabric necklaces embedded with silver teardrops and a purple bandana made of the same fabric as her necklaces.

Viper: Muzzle scar from skirmish with the Mudwings Dragonnets in book 1, Eye scar from fighting with Addax in book 5, Neck scar (covered by her bandana) from Deathbringer, Stomach scars from the fight against Nightwings in book 4, Tail scars from attacking Blister in book 5. Wears a black bandana and golden piercings, 1 in her nose, 4 around her muzzle and 2 in each ears.

Sunny: Escaped the scars for all of this arc. Wears a green bandana as well as 2 earings in each ears.

In 5011 AS, at the conference of the false brightest night, Burn, Blister and Blaze met in order to duel to finally inherent Oasis' tragic legacy.

Blister, of course, didn't want to fight Burn, so she poisoned her in order to weaken her with poison darts, but Burn, despite weakened, still defied Blister. Frustrated, she ordered her soldiers to release dozen of dragonbite vipers to cause chaos through the conference, as she herself fled.

A hour later after the sandwings cleaned up all the vipers, Burn, still weakened by poison and in pain sees Blaze scared and cowering, knowing her sister is hardly a danger to anything whatsoever, Burn makes an unprecedented declaration... She and Blaze would not fight, for enough blood has been spilled for both of them, the war ends in an agreement, Burn shall be the queen and Blaze, returning to the stronghold, shall have her title as princess restored.

Later she and Blaze would pose for a family drawing, with Burn using her casual queen dressing and ornaments for the first time in her life, while she is clearly uncomfortable for how vulnerable she is, Blaze is there to reassure her sister will continue to slay... in a fancy kween sense, of course!

Tsunami stabbing one of the most powerful queens in the world through the tail.

Glory melting a man alive for Clay.

The others joining Tsunami in attacking a random SkyWing, no questions asked.

Dragonbite

The result of messing w/ an animus while also having the name of a deathly venomous snake :/ at least he's immune

This is Dragonbite, a SandWing OC that I adopted from someone (@raven-does-artstuff-894).

He has a dragonbite viper for a tail, as a result of arguing with an animus. The snake hates him, and he hates the snake. The animus also enchanted him so that he is immune to its bite, but the snake still does anyway (ow).

The snake is a bit more conscious than it would be regularly, and some communication does happen between Dragonbite and the dragonbite.

random, but do you have any headcanons about the dragonets of destiny?

indeed i do! i've been obsessed with the dod since i read the first book (IN 2012!!!) so i've had a lot of time to think about them. mostly i have design headcanons though, since it's harder for me to think up personality/character headcanons, but here's a short list!

CLAY

i headcanon mudwing bigwings as having tattoos of their troop's talonprints on their wings, so he has the other dod's talons on his

he has to wear a leg brace after the dragonbite viper wound, as he has permanent joint/nerve damage and some muscle atrophy

also, he became interested in medicine while being treated for the viper bite, and enjoys it as a way he can protect those he loves without hurting others <3

he and sunny are also enjoying learning to cook together!

TSUNAMI

she may have coral's colors, but she bears a striking resemblance to gill. she also has pink accents, as i headcanon that as a major trait in the seawing royal family

she wears a shell earring in one ear to remember her seawing family. i don't think she'd enjoy wearing pearl strings, they would get in the way too much

has nightmares not only about killing gill, but about being restrained and unable to protect the other dod. i think being chained to a rock while glory was going to be killed/fighting in the arena did a number on her.

is the big protective den mama of the jade mountain winglets. no getting past her to her students!

GLORY

dull scales, but that helps her blend into shadows more than other rainwings, who are used to hiding in the splendor of the rainforest, while she learned from hiding in a cave.

is trying really hard to connect to her heritage. this includes attending lessons with friends and dragonet classes to learn rainwing crafts and skills. she likes trying out different fruits.

i think it would be neat if she made a co-council of rainwings and nightwings for leading both tribes, and had a nightwing ruler alongside her. who that would be, idk.

has been working with a lot of queens to establish trade agreements and things, which gives her a lot of hot goss on the other royal happenings. i think her favorite to work with would have been glacier before she died.

STARFLIGHT

WEARS GLASSES!! had terrible eyesight growing up, the guardians managed to get some glasses for him from one of the other Talons. still wears tinted glasses after he was blinded, even though his eyes were inucleated, because the weight is comforting

also has black teardrop scales next to his eyes, which would have been silver if he'd hatched under three moons

autism incarnate

ends up teaching science classes at jma, with fatespeaker handling the library while he's teaching

SUNNY

i need her to have brown colorpointing and black freckles and stars on her wings you don't understand

dune put two and two together on thorn being so cagey about her boyfriend and quickly realized sunny is a hybrid. lied to the other guardians and said 'oh some sandwings just look like that. yeah see even blister has black markings. oh the tail? uhhh her egg was damaged or something idk'

sunny was really like a daughter to dune, not just because she's a sandwing but because she's thorn's kid

she has a LOT of hobbies, and wants to learn how to do everything! she's pretty good at drawing and cooking
