I am ashamed of my country. I am ashamed of my government, the police and these hateful counter protesters, all of whom have grown up/live in the same country and speak the same language as I do.

This is about an hour drive away from me, I want to help them so bad but I do not have the resources nor anyone to go with for safety.

So I will do whatever I can online, and in my closest circle.

We will never give up.

The Schoof I Cabinet is too focused on the short term, paying for measures to improve things now by making cuts that could harm future prosperity. The government also has not made many of its measures and ambitions concrete enough to calculate how they will play out. The Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB), Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP), and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) said this in a very critical joint reflection on the Cabinet’s Budget Day plans. “The Cabinet is prioritizing broad prosperity here and now at the expense of broad prosperity later and elsewhere,” the planning offices wrote, NRC reports. The government wants to keep the budget deficit below the European-agreed limit of 3 percent in the coming years. To achieve this, it is making structural cuts of 1 billion euros in higher education, research, and innovation. That is very risky for the economy in the longer term, said CPB director Pieter Hasekamp. “The cuts are now creating financial space for government finances but may be at the expense of prosperity in the future. Research worldwide shows a clear link between spending on education and growth in prosperity.” The cuts are also “at odds with the government’s goal of improving the competitive position and business climate,” the planning offices added. The government plans state that it wants to improve the quality of education and basic skills among school students, but it does not explain how it plans to achieve this or what level of improvement it aims for. Plans to make books more expensive by hiking the VAT rate also seem inconsistent with this goal.

Or was this man a middle child, bookended by brothers and sisters and chafing at the bit to be Known, the teenage desire to be seen as a profound individual in his own right and on his terms, away from the flock. wanting to be the benevolence that feeds the hungry mouths instead of being one of those many?

Did he have his mama’s soulful eyes, his daddy’s proud nose, his grandma’s restless wandering spirit that demanded following the north wind??

As Pieter Omtzigt takes a step back from active politics, Gordon Darroch asks if any politician’s stock has fallen as fast in recent times as his? Little over a year ago, at the launch of his party, Nieuw Sociaal Contract (NSC), it seemed Pieter Omtzigt could do no wrong. His tireless campaigning to expose the childcare benefits scandal (toeslagenaffaire) allowed him to stand apart from the tarnished brand of the Christian Democrats (CDA) and became the springboard for his own party. Omtzigt promised to breathe new life into a political system that had grown stagnant at the end of the Rutte era. He would make government accountable again, ensure bureaucrats and institutions served the people rather than the other way round, and establish a basic standard of living (bestaanszekerheid). The Netherlands would be a fair, efficient and decent place to live once more. Omtzigt enjoyed the most precious and scarce commodity in modern politics: respect. For most of the election campaign NSC was in a group of three parties leading the opinion polls. Other leaders openly courted Omtzigt: Caroline van der Plas of the farmers’ party BBB famously declared: “I want to be with Pieter”. He was routinely spoken of as the next prime minister, despite insisting he had no interest in the job. And though his appeal waned during a bruising campaign that played into Geert Wilders’s hands, the 20 seats won by NSC should still have given Omtzigt a platform to work his ideas into a new cabinet’s programme for government. But just a year after its launch, NSC looks like a busted flush. At the European elections in June the party finished behind the CDA, the BBB and the animal rights party PvdD with less than 4% of the vote – around a fifth of its polling level last September.

The Curaçaoan freedom fighter Tula receives rehabilitation, and the Netherlands offers apologies.

On 17 August 1795, Tula, with 50 others, started the largest revolt in the history of the Netherlands Antilles against the Dutch tyrannical slavers. Tula fought for freedom and equality. His group traveled across the island, freeing people, and the group increased to 2000 people. The Dutch brutually crushed the revolt and captured Tula. Tula was tortured and brutually executed by the Dutch.

The Dutch government always portrayed Tula as a criminal, but today, he is declared a hero by the Dutch government (he has been a national hero in Curaçao since 2010). They also admitted that the Dutch tried to erase him from history and offered official apologies.

These are small steps, but important in the road towards reparations.
