Eben (pt 1)
The stones glistened with night rainfall as Eben made his way down into the courtyard of his family home, the large building casting shadows across the ground that he used to his advantage. At nearly seven years old, Eben was putting his soldier's training to the test. It didn’t matter to him that his weapons were made of wood and that the knights who his father hired to test him used a fraction of their skills during their lessons. Eben was proud of his progress and considered himself well on his way to being a true Kinslayer soldier.
True to that form, he crept along the stone walls, inching closer to the open door through which firelight flickered. It was the eighth of the month, which meant that his family’s merchant contact from Qualinesti has arrived with the months shipments. Eben had previously seen the tall elf from his bedroom window, or as he passed through the court on his way too or from the home, but he’d never heard him speak. He knew that his parents dealt with fine Elven furniture as part of their larger business dealings in Haven and had no interest in learning the finer points of that trade. This visit provided nothing more than an opportunity to hone his skills in infiltration, and Eben was excited to be able to tell his tutors the next day of his success.
When he was close enough to the door that he could make out the low voices, Eben stopped, easing himself down to the floor and creeping forward to peek into the room. His mother, Veran Shatterstone, was seated on a luxurious wood-carved armchair. The wood of the arms had been inlaid with gold, and the high backing extended over the crown of her head, coming together to form an eagle with its wings pressing together as if it were alighting on the top of the chair. Ergon Shatterstone leaned against the marble fireplace, a silver goblet in one hand with the rest of the unpacked furniture scattered about the room. Occasionally he would point at a piece and ask questions about its design or make. Eben could not see the elf from his vantage point, but he heard his low rasping voice as he discussed this year's design trends.
“Avian imagery has become quite popular in Qualinost as of late. I expect that there will be more pieces such as these in the coming months. Your order from Sylvani has been delayed by a fortnite, but he has lowered his price in penance.”
“Excellent, Rytar. We value your cooperation in securing these items for us.” There was a small sneeze, and Eben saw his mother's eyes flicker to a couch positioned on the edges of the firelight. Stretched across its cushions was a small elven girl. She looked to be about Eben’s height with silver hair like the moonlight. She pressed her face into the cushions and Eben watched a cloud cross over his mother's face.
“We do not muddy the products with our fluids, young lady. Sit up straight.” She hissed at the girl. A shadow grew across the room as the tall elven male stood from his seat. He took had been obscured by the high backings of the newly arrived furniture, but now he strode confidently past Eben’s mother, stopping in front of the girl and wrenching her to her feet with one swift motion.
“My apologies, Lady Shatterstone. Some of the children have no concept of manners. This one here though is my pride and joy. I think you’ll find that she has some desirable qualities.”
“It’s quite alright, I doubt any damage has been done. We appreciate your willingness to continue operations with us. We know the challenging times we all face now. The High Priests have been on the warpath lately with the whispers of darkness from the East. Having a comrade such as yourself is invaluable. We have a meeting with the council in a fortnight, and we will be discussing enlarging the route to the North to allow for more free passage of goods from Qualinesti. There are those who object to the move, economic matters strained as they are, but we’ve put more than enough gold into their pockets. It shouldn’t be an issue to get the council to see things from our view.” Veran smoothed a wrinkle in her dress as she spoke. Rytar moved away from the child and returned to his seat, leaving the girl standing in the light of the fire. Her eyes were swollen and red, and Eben noticed a spattering of red along the hems of her dress.
“There are trying times, ones that the house of Shatterstone should be more than equipped to manage. Violence has spread across the land. Last year's dismal harvest has made monsters of us all, I’m afraid. People are more than willing to give anything of value to extend their sanctuary through the coming winter, and those who aren’t are easily dispatched. This young one's parents fell into the latter category.”
“How old is she?” Eben’s father spoke over top the girls head, ignoring the shivering child mere feet from him.
“From my estimations she’s nearly fifty. Still far from maturity, and will be quite malleable to the right person. Eager and willing to learn, as I’ve seen so far. She made quick work of saddling the horses a couple of nights ago.”
“Excellent, that will make her much easier to place. Do you need Ebert to take her down to the rooms, or would you prefer doing that on your own?” As Verdan rose to her feet, Eben felt his time spying on his parents was over. Questions broiled in his brain as he tensed, getting ready to push off from his spot on the floor and return to his bedroom.
As he began to rise, his left leg lost grip on the stone floor, causing him to slip forward. He released an involuntary gasp as his chest hit the ground and that was it. The silence in the room let him know he’d been discovered.
“Eben.” His father’s tone was enough, and the young lad rose to his feet, not bothing to wipe the dirt and dust from his clothes before he entered the room. He hung back near the door, avoiding his mother’s eyes.
“What did you hear, son?”
“I just wanted to meet mister Rytar, father. Nothing really, just about the new furniture. Bird carvings. A new road. Honest, I wasn’t there long. I meant no offense and I’m deeply sorry.”
“Not as sorry as you could be.” Eben’s father rose a hand to silence his wife’s mutterings. Rytar had not risen from his seat, while the girl kept her gaze focused on the stones in front of her.
“It is not polite to eavesdrop, and you know this. We were just showing our guest out, as a matter of fact. You may have heard about our new ward.” Veran’s eyes flickered towards her husband and her lips pursed.
“This is…”
“Olandria.” Rytar filled in the gaps, still seated and hidden from Eben’s view.
“Yes, sorry, Olandria. She’s all alone in this world, and Rytar saw it fit to bring her here, where she may be well taken care of. Starting tomorrow, it is your duty to teach Olandria the rules of the home. She’ll be bunking with the other maids and will have her own chores, but you’re to treat her as a peer, not just another worker.” Eben’s father approached the girl and pushed her forward toward his son. Olandria let out a whimper at his father's touch but soon walked towards Eben on her own.
“Hullo.” Wisps of hair obscured her face, but even from a foot away Eben could smell a freshness on her, as if her skin emanated the scent of fresh rain and verdant moss.
“Do you understand, Eben? She’s your responsibility now.”
“Yes, father.” Eben bowed his head and began inching his way closer towards the door, leaving Olandria behind. He heard his father sigh and briefly looked up to see him clutching his temples with one hand.
“Well take her with you, Eben, we don’t have all night. Show her where she’ll be sleeping and then off to bed with you.” Eben froze before taking a few steps back towards the girl. Grabbing her hand he gently pulled her along with him.
“And Eben, do not let me catch you eavesdropping, again. This is your one. Next time you’ll rue the day.”

"Eben...Why did you help me?"
Eben swallows. Why did he help Adder? The smart thing to do would've been to kill the gorgon while he was down. But Eben had hesitated. Why?
"I guess...I guess I wanted to repay you for saving me. You didn't have to."
Adder frowns leaning forward. "Of courssse I did... That'ssss my whole job..."
Eben raises an eyebrow at Adder's slurred speech. The gorgon must be lightweight. "Your job is to protect the villagers, not me. I'm just a criminal, remember?"
"No you're... You're... You're good too. I shouldn't have sssaid that. I just... Her booksss and her sculpturesss were everywhere on the ground."
"That's what you were mad about?"
Adder nods. "It's all I have left of her..."
Eben sets the apple down. He knows he shouldn't ask this, but he has to know...
"Adder, why did you kill Helia?"
