So I was rereading some of your old posts bc u have the Best loz takes and you mentioned theorizing the fierce deity is the first hero and as a certified first hero stan I NEED to know more abt this!!! Can you go more into depth?
Oh dear mutual oh my dear friend- I have SO MANY thoughts about how the fierce deity may be the first hero, let me walk you down my whole thought process as I'm wholly so unwell over the very concept of the fierce deity.
First of all, this whole idea came to my brain during my majora's mask playthrough and I really enjoyed how it was such an interesting parallel to hyrule. With... the exception of two very important things, Ganondorf and Zelda, power and wisdom, the two things that seem to consume every single bit of hyrulean history no matter the time period. Another thing that's interesting is that they're are far fewer instances of the triforce in termina compared to hyrule and if you prefer the 3ds remake- which I played- over the n64, the triforces that were on the statues were removed.
That means it's definitely hinted that termina doesn't have a triforce or at least it's so far ago in the past and its people have little to no attachment to it. There's no princess, there's no demon king, there's no triforce! But the one thing that it does have that hyrule does not is actual evidence of the hero, the fierce deity mask.
One thing that's always stumped me about the greater loz timeline or just all of the various games- there's little to no... influence of the heroes spirit, or courage, whichever you like to refer all of the Link's under. Ganondorf and Zelda can exist on their own without relying on the other's existence, but Link can't! At most the only real things we see that carry Link through history is faded legends of a hero, but that's it. The hero holds no presence in the minds of the people of hyrule, they simply appear and disappear when disaster calls for them.
But, as I mentioned, termina is the sole exception to this as the fierce deity mask exists and it holds Link's exact visage. Hylia is painted in Zelda's features, Demise is painted in Ganondorf's features, so what does that make the fierce deity?
Another interesting fact to me is that nothing relating to the hero exists in skyward sword, so that must mean that whatever the fierce deity is- they must've existed beforehand. Also, we really don't have any idea for just how old termina is, but if you see them as being a direct mirror to hyrule then it makes sense that they've been around just as long.
So here's my idea: the fierce deity must've existed before even skyward sword, meaning that they likely existed around the time of Hylia's and Demise's first initial battle that brought hylians to the sky. But at the same time, the fierce deity had to be gone from memory by the time of skyward sword.
Which leads to another idea of mine: why is termina hidden away? Virtually no one is ever going to stumble across it, the only reason Time did was because he was literally dragged by skull kid. The portal is hidden deep inside the lost forest at the bottom of a hole that none with rational sense would ever think about going down. One of my first thoughts during my playthrough was that it seemed to be on purpose, to hide its very existence away.
Its said that the goddesses created termina, but did they covet that land as they did hyrule? Did they give it the same blessings and care as it did to the land that Hylia and Demise reigned over? I would say not as the goddesses have seemingly abandoned it and so has its people, the goddesses and triforce have no power there.
All of this leads to my final conclusion: the fierce deity is the first hero and perhaps either fought by Hylia's side during the war against Demise, or the fierce deity was the very thing who dealt the killing blow to Demise.
But here's the thing that really interests me about the fierce deity, its in his very name. Demise, Ganondorf, the Demon King... he's commonly seen as one of the strongest entities in the entirety of hyrule, so much so that his visage and tales of his strength carry through all of history. Despite all that, he only carries the title of king? Which makes the fierce deity even stranger in comparison because what is stronger, more intimidating, so much so that the very name of a god- is in his name?
Wouldn't you think such a grand title would undoubtedly carry some kind of weight in the greater sense of hyrules history? But it doesn't, which leads me to my next thought.
The fierce deity was purposely taken to termina, whether it was willingly or not is up to you but I personally think it wasn't. All of that power was sealed into a mask and then that mask was trapped in a world that was hidden away from the rest of all the worlds and dimensions. What does it mean that Time comes across a mask that looks just like him and holds such immense power? A power that rivals darkness itself but not with light, just the willingness to meet that darkness with its own.
The fierce deity in my mind is... powerful, the first hero ever to exist and his strength reflects that. Someone who was able to go toe to toe with Demise at his strongest and win, not only that, but to prove his strength as a god even over Demise. This is me saying that the fierce deity and the first hero are one and the same!
Also why the fierce deity was trapped inside termina is genuinely up to interpretation. Maybe the goddesses and Hylia both became fearful of his power, maybe the people themselves became scared of him, maybe he was trapped. Who knows! That's the beauty of creativity you can truly do whatever you please lol.
But yeah here's my incredibly elaborate, detailed headcanon that the fierce deity has way more worldbuilding than what's shown and is actually the first ever wielder of courage. I also have a whole headcanon that only the Link's can wear the fierce deity mask but that's a WHOLE other meta in of itself lmao

Artisan would know very well, after all, that courage is not the absence of fear, and a sword does not make a hero.

Linktober Shadow Day 6
Shadow Beast
The Twilight Princess fan in me really came out on this one huh? I blame the sleep deprivation. We never quite addressed the effects of the Twili Magic on Twilight and how it's only sheer force of will and the fact he's so darn kind, Midna's influence and Time teaching him the Song of Healing first being the main factor in making sure he doesn't fall huh? Even more so than the One Cutscene. We also need to talk more about the fact we technically kill Midna's people and how by the end of it all Twi is so changed by the Twilight Realm who's it's own can of worms that, much like Time he can't quite go home as himself me thinks, as a treat to myself
Mostly Twilight x Reader, this goes out to all of the folks who never quite recovered from Twilight Princess and the fact we never got that sequel (I mean it gave us BOTW and TOTK and Wild, but at what cost?), but can be read as Link x Reader either on the platonic or romantic.
Don't think there's any warning this time but might edit later if needed.
Actually yeah there is one warning
TW:
References to body horror typical to Twilight Princess, though I recommend not reading it I'd you're squeamish period.
Even after so long, you and Twilight could still remember the beauty and solemnity of the Twilight Realm, with it’s zircon skies with clouds of trapped fire and rains of viper obsidian.
The silence of the infection upon the realm of light broken only by the echoes of the howling elegy of the Twili and Interlopers who came before creeping over the land like rot and wither over flowers, the lament of the lost spirits of the people and animals of Hyrule falling over your spirit like a shroud, a shared hymm from two worlds reality had been twisted, only both of it’s princess, one filled the luster of empyreal sorrow in her mind and one with the scorch abyssal fury in her heart knowing to see the reflective tragedy befallen to their people. With Link as the one who restored the memory of what once was in both worlds as divinity and calamity sang in his bones and you a witness to the restoration of harmony to the discordant symphony, the two different songs of light and shadow refusing to let go of either of you in an eternal duet.
(Once touched by magic, it shall never leave the one if holds onto Twilight may have been the one with the Beast in his soul, with the howl of a wolf, the bite of shades in his veins and the lament of innocents taking precedence over anything purely because he learned how to silence the whispers of the one’s who made a grab for heaven’s throat and we’re pushed in the cracks of reality for their prideful vánitas even as he could taste it in the back of his tongue, twining around his ribs and overgrowing into his shattered mirror heart like vines, flowering with the divinity and eternal nature of the Hero’s Spirit, already having the hunt of the Fierce Deity in it’s veins and the remains of cursed divinity welcoming the new aspect merrily so he could bear it. The song of the innocent wrongly punished among the sinners rang into your mind, scratched at your skin and dug it’s claws around your throat, chocking you with sorrow and regret, more willing to leave gouges than to let go of someone’s who’s looked into the reverse side of the sacred realm and wept with grief for it’s people and the curse of it’s beauty.
It would never leave you, Link or Zelda, who learned who love the darkness the way Midna did, madness and unsightly delight and all.)
While the people of Hyrule merely became trapped as observers at best, if they were lucky, Midna’s raging grief and resentment quickly became obvious, once she revealed that rotten Zant had done to her and her people, twisted into a new form, distorted in body and trapped in mind like the animals and beasts of Hyrule, their pain driving them in becoming feral attack hounds for the usurper, their howling screams as much sorrow, wailing in an attempt to let their agonized, tortured souls to escape from it’s mouth, a futile attempt to flee from the strain of reality forgetting their true form in favor of Zant’s twisted design, of being used as sentient canvases for cruelty and ruthlessness, of their will being stepped over in favor of corrupting recreation.
Of how it only didn’t quaff down at Midna’s mind because of the nature of her ephemerality, fully beloved by the Realm of Darkness, of how she loathed him for it and wouldn’t wish her fate of that of her people’s on any living or dead soul, once she came to love the Realm of Light through Zelda’s sacrifice.
Which was why, when you saw three of the victims of the telltale twisting from darkness utilized with the intent to drive one insane, a familiar looking plate of stone engraved on the remains of ashes from their identity, the curling of distorted, solid darkness making crooked mishapen manes, bent out of shape from their too long torso and long, long arms adorned with twitching, deformed claws, you feel very justified in way your blood froze, holding onto Wild’s arms and yanking with all you had so his shot will miss, his yelp of surprise swallowed by the bone cracking, blood curdling screech from one of the beasts as a Skyward Strike grazed it’s petrified flesh.
You feel something warm drip down your ears, taste the promise of violence and the cry of lost souls on the back of your tongue and swallow it down as the memory of the Twilight Realm attempted to bite and crack your ribcage to quaff down your heart, to devour it bones and all, calling out in desperation, “Don’t! That’s a person!”
Sky freezes, as still as a statue, Legend curses the heavens crimson in a way you are so glad Wind isn’t around to hear as he retreats Twilight snarls, the wolf in him revolted and disgusted, you wonder if the Twilight is singing in his mind too as he restrains himself from reaching for the crystal as nails just a tad too sharp invite droplets of blood to one hand, grimm as a graveyard “We need to get them together anyway, felling just one won’t be enough.”
You grimace, releasing Wild, keeping your eye on the Shadow Beasts and another on your group, pointedly not mentioning the twitch in Four, amethyst clouding his gaze and the prism of his eyes turning gray with memories you and Twilight both knew all too well, of the grimace in Time’s otherwise stony countenance, you’d wished to avoid bloodshed of whoever was turned against their will, but you and Twilight both knew that might not be possible, death, unfortunately, might be the greatest mercy you can grant these poor souls.
(The Twilight is harmonizing in your ears, jeering, you feel the Interlopers insanity and the Twili’s lament on your teeth. As lovely as it could be cruel, the merry feeling upon meeting, the sorrow at a parting.
If you ever see the Shadow, you might just try indulging the echo by offering it’s blood as tribute. You'd make it hurt. The fact it learned the spell used to deform reality in such a way was cruel and vile.)
“Legend, how is your magic?” shoots Warriors, analyzing, calculating, it snaps the purple back into Four’s gaze, brings his mind back to focus as he reaches into his inventory for his Moon Pearl, Twilight is circling the beasts with single minded purpose, herding them together and prowling as he would as a wolf, Wild thankfully listened to your warning and had switched from the more destructive Flame and Lightning Arrows to ice ones. It doesn’t contain them for long but it gives a few precious seconds to strategize.
Legend catches on, switching to the Ice Rod on one hand and grasping his own Moon Pearl with the other, Sky has another Skyward Strike ready, but doesn’t release it, you switch from your sword to accepting a Magic Rod tossed at you from Wild, “Good enough.”
You breath in shakily, the symphony of the Twilight Realm has quieted, more lament than anthem as it’s Hero steps back, returning to your side, he nods grimly, “... Then, let’s end this quickly.”
You know your will boys will do their best to heal them, and failing that, you hope that they’ll hear the requiem of the Twili rather than the lament once they’re at peace, that they'll find some form of threnody.
It is a horrible thing, to be forced to die as a beast.
#linked universe x reader#linked universe twilight x reader#We really need to talk more about how the Twilight Realm sticks with Twilight and how it's magic never really leaves him#Heck I also want to know what it was like learning to turn into a wolf on his own. I bet that it was quite the process#friendly reminder that Time Twilight Midna and her people can all shake hands over identity and technical body horror#And how the Twilight Realm also likely has it's form of sentience due to the duality of both people like the Interlopers and the Twili#Something something how the difference between light magic dark magic is more about how willing much each reality changes you#and how Twilight more than anything and anyone who was with him on his journey would embody that fine line#Also the conflict between not wanting to kill the people that remind you of your old friend and the echoes all you have left of her realm#and knowing that their fate is so darn awful that death is a mercy#The reason Reader sees the Twilight as they do is because the dark magic latched onto them via association and Twilight's fondness#Maybe I'll elaborate on that later idk lol#Also the reason Dark Link knows the curse Zant used is both because of his nature and a reference to the TP Manga if you know you know#Hero's Shade mauls Zant in it. It's arguably the best thing in any manga I am begging any people who like Twilight and TP to go read it#summer writes linktober shadow 2023#summer writes#I could go on an entire essay about the relationship between the Realm of Darkness in each game and the Realm of Light and magic in loz#but I doubt anyone would want to hear about it lol

I'm gonna be taking an art break (or at least a break from fully rendered art) to focus on my writing and other hobbies for a lil bit!
I want to work on the epilogue for my main LoZ AU fic and...I also want to write an essay on the legend of zelda and why I (and so many other queer people) relate to Link and Zelda!
Wish me luck!

Ayyy it’s me! (I finally found it cause I was blocked after responding with hey it’s me! So I couldn’t reblog it)
The fact I got blocked for this alone is so funny all for stating an opinion on a fictional Duck wow and being neutral about the OP’s post.
Also btw if your going to talk shit about me behind my back, please censor my name, so I don’t get spammed by pissed of Della stans. (Luckily hasn’t happened yet) So I censored yours for privacy sake although it’s already on my page.

Ella wiggled around on the sofa; nervously and full of anticipation - much to Thor's amusement. The God of Thunder couldn't help but to smile, as he watched his niece being so happy. She was so bubbly and antsy, that each cute raven curl on top her head bobbed wildly with every wiggle.
"Uncle Thor, when are they finally here?" The blonde man chuckled, shrugging his muscular shoulders. "I unfortunately don't know, tiny mischief. When I talked to your daddy, he said they just left the hospital." The little girl pouted. "But uncle Thor..." She almost whined, as if the God of Thunder was able to do anything about it. "I want to meet him now." Thor placed his way too big hand on Ella's small shoulder. "I know, Ella, but-" Just before he could finish his sentence, the sound of a key turning in a lock echoed quietly through the rooms. Ella's eyes immediately widened; shining with pure, honest happiness. "They are here! They are here!" She squealed and jumped excitedly down the sofa, before storming out of the living room and down the hallway. Thor just giggled, shaking his head.
Loki stepped through the door - and immediately got greeted by the whirlwind his daughter was. "Daddy! Daddy!" His head snapped up; seeing Ella running as fast as lightning towards him. He smiled, put the bags on the floor and squatted down; ready to catch his little mini-me - what he did, of course. Ella literally jumped into his arms, almost causing Loki to lose his balance. Well, Ella wasn't a toddler anymore and therefore just bigger and heavier. "Hey, princess." He cuddled her; wrapped her up in big daddy bear hug.
"Are you ready to meet your little brother, sweet girl?" Ella nodded quickly; jumping up and down. "Yes, yes, yes!" Loki chuckled softly at his daughter's enthusiasm; tucking a few untamed curls behind her ears. "Alright. Be a good princess and wait on the sofa with uncle Thor, yes? I'll help your mama and then you can meet him, okay?" "Uh.Huh. Okay, daddy." Loki nodded with a smile and smooched her cheek, causing her to giggle.
While Ella hopped back to the living room, Loki went back down on the yard, in order to help you. You were still a bit weak and exhausted from the birth. So, being the caring husband Loki was, he helped you out of the car. "Thanks, Lokes." You took his hand, smiling. "Of course, darling." He pressed a soft kiss on your lips; then reached for the handle of the baby seat, in which tiny Narfi laid, wrapped up in a soft blanket, sleeping tightly. "Let's take you home, little prince, shall we? Your big sister can't wait to meet you."
Tumblr media
For the second time opened Loki the door to yours and his apartment; and closing it gently behind the three of you. He put Narfi slowly on the ground again, before helping you out of your jacket - and shoes. The God bend down, got on one knee and untied your shoelaces. "You don't have to do that, babe... I can do it myself." Loki shook his head. "I insist, my queen. You carried our son for months and gave birth mere three days ago, so... Let me take care of you. " Your heart did a somersault at his words and the loving smile he gave you. Tender blue eyes meeting yours. You shook your head, smoothing your hand through his luscious raven curls. "How I got so lucky to have you, I'll never know..." Loki caught your hand and brought it to his lips, breathing a soft kiss on your knuckles. "That is a question I ask myself every day, love." That send your emotions skyrocketing. "Oh gods, Lokes, stop. You're making me cry." The God chuckled and stood up again, cupping your cheeks with both his big hands. But before he was able to kiss you, the voice of your daughter echoed down the hallway again.
"Mommy?" She whisper-yelled, standing in the doorway of the living room, peeking around the corner. Your eyes lowered to meet hers, causing the tears which already gathered in your eyes to fall. You hadn't seen Ella in three, almost four days and had missed the little girl terribly. Just like Ella had missed you. "My baby girl," you almost sobbed, making quick steps over to her and immediately pulled her in a big hug. "Hiii, sweetie. I missed you so much." Ella snuggled against you. "Missed you, too, mommy." You inhaled her scent, buried your head in her hair and peppered her face with kisses. Loki just watched with a smile on his face and the baby seat in his hand. "Do you want to meet your baby brother now?" You asked then, looking at Ella. "Yes, please, mommy." You nodded towards Loki and Narfi. "Go, say hi then." Ella smiled one of the biggest smiles you had ever seen, as she tiptoed excitedly over to her dad and brother. Loki squatted down beside Narfi, waiting for Ella to approach. "Princess, meet your baby brother." The little girl's eyes widened, when she saw her baby brother for the first time - the sibling she had waited for such a long time. "He's blue, daddy!" Clear amazement was swinging in her voice. Loki nodded. "Mhm, just like you when you were born." She sat down in front of the baby seat, eyes glued to Narfi. "Can he shapeshift like me and you?" "I don't know yet, Ella. We'll see." Loki smiled down at his two babies.
"Hi Narfi..." Ella cooed, grinning like a Cheshire cat. "I am your big sister." Narfi was still asleep, though his tiny face contorted, before he sighed and gripped onto Ella's hand. "Aww," the girl giggled. "Can I hold him, daddy?" Loki nodded. "Of course. Let's sit on the sofa for that, huh?" "Okay!" She squealed and jumped back up on her feet, running excitedly back into the living room, past you and her uncle. Loki followed her, just like you and Thor.
"Can I...?" Big, blue eyes travelled from Narfi to Loki and back. "Of course, sweet girl." Carefully, Ella reached out her small hand to touch the even smaller hand of her brother. A little, but audible gasp left the little girl's lips; totally fascinated.
Standing in the doorway of the living room, you and Thor - who had joined the joyful family reunion, watched the sweet scenes unfolding in front of you with broad smiles on your lips.
Ella didn't want to let go of her brother, just cuddling him closer. She didn't even let him go to say goodbye to her uncle... "I love him so much! Thank you, mommy and daddy." She leaned down and placed a sloppy kiss on his tiny cheek. "I promise I am going to protect you forever," she whispered, but not quiet enough for you and Loki to not understand. Yours and Loki's heart melted; threatening to burst with all the love. You could see it in your husband's eyes.
The little girl jumped on the sofa, kicking her feet giddily, while Loki lifted Narfi carefully out of the confines of the baby seat and sat down beside his daughter. "Ready, princess?" "Uh.Huh!" "Okay, so... I'm going to place him on your lap and you need to make sure that you support his head, okay sweetie?" "Okay! And how, daddy?" Loki shifted Narfi, placed him on Ella's lap, "Just put your arm underneath his head." and guided her hand. "Like that?" "Yes, exactly like that. Well done, princess. Look, you're holding your brother!" Ella giggled excitedly, holding Narfi tightly and making sure that he doesn't fall. You and Thor joined them, sitting down on the sofa as well. "You're doing great, Ella," you said, smiling brightly. Seeing your daughter holding her baby brother caused your ovaries to scream. It was a picture to die for.
"He's so cute and soft and cuddly." Ella stated, leaving you, Loki and Thor cackling.

LoZ: LU - The Lantern of the Lost
I have this idea for an item that's been rolling around in my head for several years.
It's a black frame lantern with a peculiar flame inside.
Like this:
Tumblr media
The lantern has a tassel attached to the bottom with a silver, flower-shaped bell, that when it rings, it draws in Poe Souls so long as they haven't taken on the form of enemy Poes. Those souls then join the flame until it is time for them to be taken to the Bargainer Statues.
The flame itself almost seems to pulse like a heartbeat.
Regardless, its design would have a definitive Sheikah influence. Not technologically, but magically & design wise. Even featuring a very ancient iteration of the Mind's Eye symbol, one with a very destinctly Depths script style design to it.
Something kinda like this:
Tumblr media
(Obviously not done. There are definitely some mistakes. Also not sure which looks better.)
Other designs could include Depths-style versions of the Shadow Medallion symbol & such things.
Anyway, when held by someone who hasn't unlocked said ability, it will merely act as an ordinary, if magically-powered lantern with an ordinary flame. Though, it will consume the holder's magic, just not very quickly.
However, it has to be the actual Mind's Eye. Otherwise, the flame won't be the one in the picture above & won't be able to house the Poe Souls. It doesn't work with the Lense of Truth or the Mask of Truth. There's just a different level & even quality of magic that runs through your 3rd eye when you have access to the ability itself that very simply can't be fully replicated artificially. Sure, the Mind's Eye can't literally see through chests the way the Lense of Truth can, but it has a number of other benefits that the Lense doesn't.
Something else is that the light from the lantern can essentially project the power of the Mind's Eye outward, thus allowing those around the holder to also see the spirits. Both living & dead ones. Not to mention passed illusions. You see, someone with the power can see the Poe Souls as people. Much like how the ghosts of Rhoam & the Champions appeared. Though, more wispy & most normal people only have a couple of those little green flames floating around them. It also allows those nearby to hear the Poe Souls speak.
Though the Shadow Soldiers are merely echos of the people they were. The souls of those soldiers have already moved on, but they were able to leave a bit of themselves behind. Their dying wish to protect Hyrule in whatever way they could is what allowed such shadows to manifest. One with the Mind's Eye & those near them while holding the lantern could hear the Shadow Soldiers too, but it'd be little more than whispers of what they'd been thinking & feeling at the time of their death. Their most desperate desire. The one that keeps such echos anchored to the Depths.
Which brings up something. The fact that a lot of the Links seem to have a tendency towards seeing, interacting with, or soothing spirits or ghosts. You think it's something to do with the Spirit of the Hero?
Either way, I'd really like to see a half-Sheikah Link using this lantern. So, maybe this could be a part of the Library of Nayru story.
Either way, I'd want whichever Link ends up with it to also learn the Song of Healing & the Song of the Sun for the sake of soothing the souls of the dead.
Of course, it wouldn't always work immediately. Sometimes, Link would have to help them finish something or talk to them about something. Though, in the case of Poes & Imp Poes having taken on enemy form, it'd require a bit more work. Specifically, "killing" them with either a Light or Twilight-based attack. Either from a spell or a weapon. Doing so will destroy them & leave behind both a Poe Soul & a few Dark Clumps.
Such methods also work on undead enemies, such as Stals, Redeads, & Gibdos, & corrupted enemies such as Wolfos, Bullbos, Vulpos (the Keaton enemies from MC), Iron Knuckles, Furnixes, ect.
In the case of the latter, it purifies them, turning them back to their original forms. And in the cases of the Keatons, Iron Knuckles, & Furnixes, you'll get something out of it. If not rewards, then information or quests at the very least later on.
In fact, I could see purifying a Keaton near the beginning of the game ending up being the linchpin to Link learning the Mind's Eye technique to begin with. Perhaps the Keaton even becomes the companion for this game.
Though, I can also see him getting on a lot of players' nerves, because I tend to portray the Keaton as wise & clever, but very mischievous (occasionally just outright demanding Keatonzushi & Keaton Udon). Having a distinctly Cheshire Cat vibe, though his questions always have answers & it's always something that Link is supposed to be able to figure out on his own. Aside from riddles, I also tend to see the Keaton as being fans of the Socratic Method.
By this I mean, that they ask a lot of questions, fully knowing the answers themselves, but also expects Link to be able to think for himself & thus use said questions as a way to force Link to think critically.
Despite this, they are also not shy in telling Link when he's done a good job & will always repay a favor in kind.
In a way, I suppose that I see this particular Link as the sort who genuinely enjoys things like puzzles, brainteasers, riddles, & the like. Also having that classic Hero curiosity.

why do you think navi left? i’m still confused…
i am once again going to plug my loz analysis doc because i do go into navi's disappearance briefly in both the oot & mm sections but tldr i do not know and it has driven me insane for the last seven years of my life.
navi to me is representative of a support system to link in oot. when link has no one else on his side, when no adult will listen or guide him, navi is there throughout EVERYTHING. she is imperative to link's ability to fight both narratively and as a game mechanic--she is tied to the targeting mechanic. when you briefly lose her in the final battle it's a genuine handicap, because link is unable to target and therefore unable to fight when he is completely alone, and all your energy is focused on removing the block on her so that you can target ganon's weak point and win the final battle. link CANNOT win ocarina of time without navi. which is why it is SO difficult for me to rationalize her unexplained absence in the game's otherwise completely cohesive direct sequel. a fairly popular theory (at least back when i was 12 and frantically googling "where is navi majora's mask") is that, since link has completed his purpose in regards to the hero's destiny by the end of oot, navi was "no longer needed" and therefore left him. I don't like this theory for several reasons, the most prominent being that i resent the idea that navi was nothing but a guide given to link due to his possession of the hero's soul or whatever. navi was a FRIEND and a SUPPORT SYSTEM to a deeply traumatized, manipulated child who quite literally had no one else in the world on his side. and there's a lot of that echoed in majora's mask, especially the first day--you're alone, you're helpless and without a weapon, you're confined to clock town and treated as an inconvenient child by everyone you talk to. you have a fairy companion, yes, and she fills the gap somewhat, but tatl and tael always felt much more like children themselves than adult guides and supports the way navi did. tatl just doesnt quite have enough figured out herself to be as supportive to link in that situation as navi might have been. and in some ways this serves majora's mask quite well--it reminds the player of the "terrible fate" they've met with and lends to the weird atmosphere of clock town. it's a subtle signal that something is REALLY wrong.--the fairy, established in previous games as a species that served to guide you and tell you what to do, isn't quite sure what's going on either. but they had to retcon navi out of the story to get that effect. practically, thematically for majora's mask, a character like tatl works better than a character like navi, but it leaves a plot hole that demands explanation. all that being said, the only way I PERSONALLY am able to rationalize such an abrupt disappearance by navi is to say that something came up that she needed to deal with, but which was on the same or similar level as ganon, and navi, being the only adult in link's life who gave a shit about him, didn't want to subject the poor kid to anything else like that and so left him (hopefully temporarily) to deal with it alone, like any fucking responsible adult should (instead of idk putting a 9 year old to sleep for 7 years and then expecting him to be fine and willing to fight monsters the second he woke up.) there are holes in this interpretation, obviously, such as what the hell navi is dealing with and why, and why link had to set out to search for her at all if she told him what was going on, but canon gives us literally nothing so smaller plot holes are better than huge ones.

i am so SO excited you're playing skyward sword. skwsd is my absolute fav zelda game, and i love skysd link so much, he is my little guy, my dude, the love of my life. how are you liking it? how far are you?
I'm enjoying skyward sword immensely!! Admittedly, at first I was little hesitant to get super into the game pass the intro forest temple because of how decisive this game seems to be. People seemed to either hate or be neutral to this game but I decided to play it anyway cause I do love loz and it seemed fun!! But I'm genuinely happy that I decided to play it anyway despite what the louder part of the loz community has said cause I'm truly enjoying myself a bunch.
The npcs are super animated and I love how much personality they have, even the rude ones, it just makes me happy to see how animated and diverse in personality that skyloft is! I love the little remlits and just how damn cute they are <33 I legit refuse to hurt them or throw them off cliffs they're so so cute I adore them!! Another thing that I like is that the game gives you a bunch of incentive to help fellow npcs and it gives you great rewards for doing so. It makes me actually want to look around skyloft and talk to people which is even better cause it gives me more opportunities to learn of the npcs!
I also fucking LOVE the dowsing feature, it's genuinely so great and helps me out a bunch in wanting to find objects naturally and not wanting to resort to guides. It's just nice cause I can stay in the game and find stuff at my own pace :]
ANOTHER THING!! I love how fucking COLORFUL everything is!! I am playing the HD version on the switch so I know the graphics are improved but even still! The environments and dungeons are all so pretty to look at and I llooovveedddd the ancient cistern :DDD also going back to skyward sword made me remember how much I love classic dungeon crawlers and how much I missed them in botw/totk </333 the puzzles are also very fun and are well-designed so that's a massive plus.
And uh... I've made it to the part where sksw Zelda meets with sksw Link after he managed to get all of the goddesses flames and tells him the whole deal. I genuinely did not expect for that entire scene to hit me as hard as it did but I'm really happy I managed to avoid spoilers for this long cause holy shit, holy shit. That entire conversation is so expertly written and I love how it characterizes the both of them, how they were both forced to grow up out of desperation. sksw Zelda telling Link that she was so sorry that she used him and his devotion to her?? That she knew that he would chase after her no matter what and she couldn't stay or tell him anything because the world needed a hero? That she was so sorry but she had to do it because it wasn't just them anymore, they had grown up and now the responsibility of the world was on their shoulders.
The little line of her saying that she would've been so happy to just with him on Skyloft for all their days and that she holds those memories so dear to her is just an absolute gut punch. It's so expertly written cause I feel like it would've been so easy to make her into a selfish, cruel character thanks to this conversation, but it's so wonderfully done that I fully understand why she did it. It's a case of fate demanding the worse of choices into their hands and they can do absolutely nothing about it because for as much as they love each other- neither of them could sit back and watch the world suffer. Of course, what she did wasn't good but that's the point! She hates herself for having to lie and cause him pain, for dragging him into this because she could see no other to ever be her hero.
The tragic thing is that I very much doubt it was ever in sksw Zelda's control, I think that sksw Link was always meant to be the hero and fate has a heavy hand in this game. Her motivations sort of remind me of oot Zelda's actually, blaming herself for circumstances out of her control, having to constantly stay out of reach, and having to grow up so fast. Both of them had to be the lights on the horizon that directed their heroes, but always just out of reach because he's the hero and she's the goddess, it's always so much bigger than either of them.
I've only gotten this far yet but god, GOD! This isn't even half my thoughts about the entire deal but Zelda constantly going back and forth from referring to herself with Zelda and Hylia?? Ouch??? The sudden instability of your own image... of feeling like everything you've ever known has been predestined... do you hate yourself for your past actions in another life? Do you hate her-you- for this inevitable fate that you and your hero are doomed to for reasons that you'll always blame yourself for? Does she hate herself even more that Link did exactly that, run after her, prove Hylia-herself- right? Does she feel responsible for all the physical, emotional, and mentall pain that Link has grown through in order to become the hero that the world needs? For forcing him to grow up with her when all they ever wanted was to be together and be torn apart at every single point?
Do NOT get me started on sksw Link oh my ggogoodosso ad dwshdi HELP! He's so fucking TRAGIC and PAINFUL TO EVEN THINK ABOUT! How every single person he meets he always tells them that he's looking for someone and he always seems to be in a hurry because he can't be late, not again. The sheer desperation, the unapologetic love, the personality, the inherent sacrificial nature, always looking into the past while running after Zelda- HELP ME!!! But I think one of the most painful parts to me... is that I really don't think Link blames Zelda at all, for any of it. How painful of a thought is it that I think he'd be perfectly open splitting himself on the master sword for her and he wouldn't blame her on his last breath? Would she believe him? Would she believe that she singlehandedly orchestrated the death of her hero after putting him through so much pain?
Another thing is that he isolates himself, he helps people whenever he can but there's so much guilt and isolation swirling around in him as well as the crushing weight of his destiny that he just realized. One key theme I find in the game is that early on it's stated that Link is different, from everything from the knight's academy, to Impa telling him only he can do it, to Groose trying and failing to be that hero. It doesn't feel like a blessing, it feels like a destiny he could've never avoided and he was always going to be the hero who's blood was split to protect others. Link was always going to be the one who ends up alone while everyone else stays in the past, together but eternally waiting for him- or moreso, waiting for the hero that he's forced to become. It genuinely makes me so sad that he only had Fi for the longest time but even then... she's not much more than a guide, at least at first. I really don't feel like he'd be comfortable or even believe that Fi would understand, not when she's under even stricter instructions than him.
So yeah uhhhhhhhh you could say I'm enjoying the game a bunch!! I'm waiting to finish the game before talking a BUNCH about it on the dash and flooding my blog with sksw reblogs but I'm enjoying myself so much!! Also I just missed the triforce so so much- DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH I RESENTED THE SECRET STONES FOR TAKING MY BABYGIRL THE TRIFORCE AWAY??? I literally do not care about the secret stones, bring back the triforce I love her so so soooooo much and every single time I see any sort of triforce imagery I start crying and throwing up !

Linktober Shadow Day 7
Gloom Hands
This goes out to the way I cackled hysterically once seeing these things in TOTK, well done Zelda Team. They're a terrifying concept and I really feel exploring that could be fun, even if this prompt gave me a headache and a half.
Bit late today because we've been pelted by way too many storms/lightning and writing on mobile with lightning shaking your house is generally a bad idea, so I spent most of the time writing this and the Linktober prompt by hand, then transcribing it back onto mobile as soon as I could touch eletronics without the major risk of being zapped and picking a god and praying that my internet wouldn't be too funky so I could get it out on time. Short one again though because I still need to finish the Linktober prompt so it should come out later today or fully tomorrow, sorry folks.
Anyway, as always can be read as romantic or platonic, also Sage is here both because of the prompt and because the mental image of Wild Reader and Sage trauma bonding over the extremely twisted nature Gloom/the Malice have compared to just dark magic in general in LoZ was too funny to resist, if Nintendo won't talk about the many variations of Dark Magic in LOZ and how it affects any who come in contact with it then lord darn it I guess I'll just have to do it myself (or as much as I can without breaking out the companion essay to the Realm of Darkness and Realm of Light essay which I'm already having trouble digging out).
TW:
Technically graphic descriptions of decay, gore and eldritch horror, and Reader just not having a good day in general, don't recommend reading I'd you're highly squeamish.
When you’ve first met Sage, as the Chain temporarily dubbed him, you and Wild didn’t miss the way he looked so, so haunted. Emotions warring like a storm as he looked Wild over in a mix of disbelief and the weariness of a wounded fox getting ready to bite just to escape, at the Chain with such longing ache that made one’s heart break, the way the first time he met Wolfie he didn’t hesitate to throw himself atop the canine and hug him so close like he was trying to melt into the fur, and looking at you like he didn’t know wether to cry, scream or to shut down before he buried it under the mask you knew your resident Champion could use when trying so desperately to keep it together, hands shaky as he signed in a way that set your teeth on edge and felt like you had taken a dozen of ice arrows to the back, urgent, 'It’s not safe. None of you should be here. You need to leave. Now.'
Needless to say it was alarming, even as you all knew just how ferociously untamed his and Wild’s Hyrule could be, with being overrun with so, so many types of divinity through each crack, root, drop and flesh of it’s beings. From Hylia’s cold calculating care, the Three Goddesses blood, tears and breath of life, to the Malice’s howling self sustaining fury, The Lost Woods ever overgrowing freedom and even the remnants of the Fierce Deity’s hunt in Satori’s and Malaniya's savage display of cyclic eternity, it wasn’t any surprised that apart from the Traveler’s Hyrule it was the most aggressive one with the smorgasbord of energy so thick it made even you choke on it everytime you stepped foot in it. Beautiful and free in an echo of it’s once untamed state in the age of myth even before Sky.
Over time, you and the Chain learned how to adapt to it. To listen to the warnings Wild gave about the Guardians and about the remains of Malice in his monsters, of how the moon had been forever tainted with it and how, until Sheikah tech was fully repurposed it would be best to avoid the castle all together it was difficult but manageable, and even if Sage’s reaction was alarming (and he seemed even more troubled once Wild passed onto him from Sky that, while he wasn’t to come with them yet due to how things were apparently ‘fated’ to happen, there was no way you all could leave quite yet, distantly sticking by Wild and Twilight when possible and checking on everyone’s health when not doing so), you’d though it would be much the same for his own, and in parts you were right as the Chain had taken to the new environment like fishes to water even if it took some adjustments.
Though you were quickly proven wrong, and you could have laughed at your past self’s naivety.
It was meant to be a quick run to clear a black blooded monster camp, and while decently challenging, it was over quickly between the Chain getting more apt at fighting the enemy, Sage’s addition as the man fought as ruthlessly and ferociously as Wild, switching between deadly marksmanship and feral combat on a dime and the absence of the unnaturally inteligent black scales lizalfos, you’d rest and be on your way quickly. Or so you all thought.
Twilight had been the first to smell it, the bubbling of dark but distinctively twisted magic, even more so than Zant’s brand of madness. Wild the one to spot it, the rot black and blood crimson building up at the edges of camp from his vantage point but it was Sage who had tensed, eyes snapping to the faint glow the Master Sword emmited just as the sky darkned before his frantic, alarmed howl swept over the Chain, the sheer desperate, protective panic making all of your boys still, because Sage never used his voice unless he absolutely had to, “IT'S NOT OVER! MOVE!”
It was all the warning any of you got before reality twisted, straining, and then finally screaming, the heavens staining with crimson as if gutted open, the eyes of a sin against nature itself cutting through your relief and infecting your veins with terror. It shakes you to the core, freezing with indecisive flight or fight as you spotted the tide. Heart in your throat as you tried to comprehend what you saw.
“WHAT THE-“, Legend cursed, looking ashen as his grip on his fire rod tightened. Really, all of your heroes look disturbed and you can’t blame them.
“Get to high ground if you want to live! We can’t fight these things.”, snapped Sage, much more composed, but no less frenzied.
None of you hesitate to listen.
(There were some unspoken rules, when in Wild’s Hyrule the first time around. If there is something the Champion, the most reckless of all Links, wasn’t willing to fight head on or said wasn’t worth it, the best course of action was to listen, specially if the group was vulnerable.)
The hands screech, the tide rolling over the land with an reality splitting clamoring, a sound so filled with fury and so, so twisted it made your Hylian’s ears friends bleed and you lift a hand to your head in pain as Wild pulled you along, Sage leading the charge for the nearest cliff face as Warrior’s threw Wind over his shoulders and Twilight didn’t hesitate before doing the same to Four, the frost from Legend and bomb arrows from Time and Sky barely doing nothing to slow it’s relentless charge, merely taking from it a distorted, pitched crescendoing belt of pure rage and the overlaying of many tortured souls screaming all at once, of Hyrule rejecting this existence from the world but wounded at being unable to vanquish it, the sound it makes as it spreads and drags itself across the ground with uncanny speed with it’s many, many arms like something in between sludge and smacking, wet, rotten flesh.
Sage switches between shooting arrows to helping the other Links up the cliff and shooting at it’s eyes with the strongest bow he has, making as many arrow fusions on the spot as he dares. The others quickly taking as many ranged weapons from their sides to do the same. You help Hyrule up the clifface, while Wild swipes Cryonis over the field, climbing up himself, being hauled to Sage’s side.
You are almost there when one of the hands latch onto your ankle, and you go down with a scream, Sage all but dropping the bow in his hand in favor to latching onto your hand with snarl. And
It.
Is.
Agony.
(It burns through you like your very atoms have been set on fire, bthe hands take the opportunity to sink into you, long long unnatural fingers sinking into your flesh in a unhurried blanket of darkness, the Demon King’s will is roaring, growling with abyssal rage, if it cannot rule Hyrule, it would kill everything in it instead. Gloom sinks into your cells, raptures the membranes and makes the skin slip, frantically invading, you taste rotten flesh on the back of your throat and the scent of wither and ash choke you as it sinks into your flesh, marrow, breaks down your bones bit by bit, cracking and infecting and breaking down your very essence with the fury of a dead deity which refused die, decay on an accelerated rate all over where the hands clutched like a vice as the Links trunfo pull you out or attack it and it is painful and it’s excruciatingly wretched and make it STOPCEASEITHURTS-)
A well aimed Skyward Strike severs the connection, the pain stops and you fall into Sage, breathing hard and unevenly, grasping at him like a lifeline, clawing and counting at Wild’s arm on your other side like a wounded animal, your taste blood on your throat from the screams that were ripped from it, Hyrule falling to his knees on your side as healing magic washes over you like a shroud, trying to get you to respond.
Reality howls along with you, before all is silent.
It barely took a second.
“... Just what were those things?”, rasps Sky, horrified, a sentiment echoed through the Chain, though you can’t focus on it, trying not to choke on your own blood and to pull yourself together, Wild’s hand unconsciously settling on your pulse, shaking, and Sage’s tense tone cuts through the air as he scans the area. Still tense, tone hoarse.
“... The reason why I wanted you to leave.”
Later, much, much later, before you all leave, you learn they are called Gloom Hands.
It’s unanimously agreed that all you hold loathing for those abominations, even long after you’re forced to leave Sage.
He whispers something to Wild on the way out, hugging him close, trembling. Your Champion nods, you can’t make out the words, but you make sure to hold him as close as you can before you go, indulge him in checking for your pulse even long after you’re healed.
You hope he’ll be safe, he hopes that the next time you all see each other again, it’ll be under better circumstances.

Tumblr media
With the way the sky was beginning to glow with hues of pinks and oranges, you concluded that you weren’t being dramatic, you really had been here for hours. Your arms were feeling heavy bearing the weight of your sword and you were unsure how much longer your legs would be able to hold you upright.
You tried to steady yourself wholly as you watched the young man in front of you; he seemed calm. He always seemed calm. You tried desperately to ignore the doubt that was creeping in as he circled you.
Your eyes darted from his feet to the ornate sword held between his hands, to his bright, focused eyes and back again, you really were losing focus.
I have to get him this time.
You planted yourself on the heels of your boots, the ground beneath you dry from the day’s heat, and you scouted the gap between you; it was no more than a few feet. You applied effort to ease your uneven breathing, just like he’d taught you, even if it was just to listen to his footfalls.
You were sure he was smirking as he closed in on you, slowly and deliberately. It was agonizing and you wanted nothing more than to strike.
That’s just what he expects.
His words echoed in your subconscious: patience… you just need more patience.
His sky blue tunic fluttered in your peripheral vision. He was ridiculously quick, he wasn’t holding back now. You exhaled, emptying your lungs of air, before spinning on your right foot. You yelped as your left shin made contact with the butt of his sword as it swung out.
An unfortunate mistake that he’d easily countered and would no doubt reward you with a bruise.
Stumbling backward, you let go of your weapon as you tripped-up over yourself, hoping you might break your fall with your hands. Your fumbling was in vain as you fell on your rear with a soft thud. You stared up in horror, the tip of his sword directly in your line of sight as he stood over you.
“I’ll never get this right!” you protested, balling up your hand and hitting the ground.
Your cheeks burned bright and hot when he laughed.
“You’re a terrible teacher, Link,” you told him, pouting rather playfully as you folded your arms. “Goddess knows why I asked you for help.
“What?! Come on!” His eyes widened, mortified at the accusation. “That’s hardly fair.”
You watched as Link took his sword in one hand, sheathing it in the worn scabbard at his side. He reached a slender, weathered hand out for you, motioning with a nod of his head for you to take it.
Appreciatively taking his hand, you let out an uncontrollable groan as you stood up. Even with Link taking some of the strain from you as you eased yourself upright, the sudden weight of your efforts bore you down. Link held you steady, but he was trembling as his hands held onto your biceps tightly.
“Maybe you’re right,” he began. You felt your bottom lip quiver and your eyes sting with the threat of tears. “You’ll never get this right if you continue to push yourself like this.”
Your beaten body deflated with a heavy sigh when Link let go of you. You watched as he knelt down.
“It’s been months,” you murmured, feeling ashamed, “I haven’t--”
“Stop,” he interjected, you were taken aback by his abruptness. You watched as he took your weapon into his hands. “I hear the way you talk about yourself,” Link confessed as he stood with ease, but you heard a sense of sadness in his voice, “about your training and this and that.”
He presented your weapon to you on two open palms, his arms stretched out. You grasped your sword by the hilt and let it hang rather unenthusiastically at your side.
“You have improved, you just don’t notice it because I’m so hard on you,” he enthused.
You didn’t have to look at him to hear that he wore a grin on his face, the pride he held for you was almost overwhelming.
“You have to understand,” he continued as he gently placed his palm on the small of your back, urging you to turn around, it was a gesture he probably thought nothing of but made your heart leap, “I was easy on you when you needed me to be easy on you.”
You nodded, beginning to understand, but maybe not believe him.
“But now, well,” he let out a chuckle, “I think you’re starting to give me a run for my rupees.”
You let out a hearty laugh at the audacity of his claim as you strolled in the direction of your shared camp, you felt the warmth of his palm that was still firmly planted at your back.
“I’m sure I would, Link,” you responded, overexaggerating the rolling of your eyes.
Tumblr media
Your hands were busy while your eyes focused on something else entirely, hypnotized by the shadows that danced across his features as he tended to the fire. Your eyes slowly inspected each and every detail, from the way his own azure eyes were fixated on the flames, jostling the logs, to the way his dirtied, unruly blond hair framed his face, the way it had unraveled from his ponytail. You watched, utterly entranced as he lifted a hand to his face, somehow graceful as he gently tucked those stray strands behind his pointed, Hylian ear.
Beyond the crackling of flames and the creatures that sang their evening chorus, you heard the unmistakably soft hum of Link’s voice. Your gaze drifted down to his lips where he wore a soft smile tinged with a faint sadness. You felt a heaviness in your chest.
While Link had certainly softened during the long months of traveling and the countless hours of training, you found yourself craving these rare moments of vulnerability from him. You knew there was so much more than he might ever tell you, but it was in these fractures in time that you truly noticed how tragic his kind-hearted eyes were.
You watched as he threw his stick on to the make-shift fire and wipe his hands together on a rag tucked into his belt. You didn’t hear him when he called your name, only startled out of your daydream when he frantically waved an arm at you.
“Are you alright there?” Your cheeks reacted voluntarily to the concern in his voice, feeling them grow warmer by the second you quickly averted your eyes to look at your feet. Your heart fared no better when he quickly jumped to his feet. “I said, are you okay?”
He took hold of your wrist and shook it up and down. His face suddenly came into view; Link had bent down, awkwardly twisting his neck and torso to look up at you.
That damned cocky smile of his.
“Or are you just hungry?” he asked, followed by a toothy grin.
Link’s laugh was so care-free and childlike, even after you swatted his arm, but you felt nothing less than blessed to hear him laugh like that.
“I may take my time,” he reminded you, returning to his seat by the fire, “but I can be sure it’ll taste good.”
You watched as he sat down, patting the ground beside him.
“I’m not so sure about that, Link,” you mumbled, pulling a face at him, “I don’t want to eat Moblin guts again and you can’t make me, either.”
Link chuckled half-heartedly, shaking his head, as you settled down next to him. He watched as you pulled your knees to your chest, as you clutched your arms around your shins and your shoulders heaved with a rather heavy sigh.
You thought yourself silly for hoping Link might start humming again; you wished for anything that might relax you, relieve you of your burdening inadequacies. You felt the uncomfortable sting of tears, far too exhausted to halt the rampancy of your thoughts, you set your chin in the dip between your knees.
You felt indifferent when Link presented the roasted vegetables and meats in a large serving bowl. Under different circumstances, he might playfully wave it about in front of you, tonight he saw just how upset you were.
You heard him shuffle beside you, afraid that if you moved to look at him your tears might fall, you kept your stare low and ahead of you. A gentle weight fell around your shoulders and you realized that Link had draped a blanket over you; you finally felt a tear fall as he tucked it around you.
Link reacted quickly when you heard you sniffle, his hands placed firmly on your shoulders while he moved his head to look at you. He caught the sight of the wet trails your tears were making as they glistened in the light of the fire. When you saw yet more concern on his face, you wanted to let go and bawl.
“I’m sorry,” your voice was small, trembling.
“Excuse me?” he asked, his brows furrowed with genuine incredulity.
“I’ll never be--” you choked on your words as you pushed back your outburst. You appreciated Link’s patience as he waited for you to continue, “I was so foolish to think I could ever be good enough.”
You felt your shoulders shudder beneath his hands as your sobs came freely, you wouldn’t know if he would ever understand just how loaded your statement was. You wanted to tell him that it wasn’t just about today. There was too much to say, too much you felt, it was crushing and overwhelming.
“Good enough?” his voice was soft as he brought one of his hands close to your face, gently brushing tear-soaked strands of hair behind your ear. “Maybe I was too hard on--”
“It’s not that--” your words escaped your mouth quicker than your brain could process, the immediate regret showed in your wide eyes.
Instead of backing away from you, as you had so expected, you felt Link’s hand brush along your jaw to hold your chin between his thumb and forefinger. You didn’t resist when he gently lifted your face to look at him, your arms relaxed to your sides and you let your knees rest in front of you.
You watched his eyes as they danced across your features.
“You’ve always been good enough,” he told you, you were barely able to make out his words as he let go of your chin.
You felt yourself relax as his fingers danced across your cheek, up to your eyebrow where he gently brushed at it with his thumb. He caressed your face as he brought his hand back down where he rested his thumb on your bottom lip.
Your lip quivered, his unexpected, but welcomed touch made you more nervous than you had been in a long time.
“And you’ve always been enough,” he continued, the slightest bit closer to you.
You felt the pull of your instincts as you moved with him, ever so slightly, feeling dizzy as your lips finally met. You felt Link’s thumb gently brush at your tear-sodden cheek, wiping under your eye; his gentle gesture almost made you burst.
Softly taking either side of your face in both his hands, he gently relieved your lips of his. You opened your eyes to meet his face looking as flushed as yours felt but his eyes appeared serious as he looked at you.
“You’ll always be enough,” he meant it.
You felt the tickle of a smile at the corner of your lips just before he pulled you into an awkward hug. He made an unintelligible sound before returning to his original seat in front of the fire, you let the smile beam, rubbing at your now-dry cheeks as he began patting the space in front of him.
Pulling the blanket with you, shuffling as best you could, you curled yourself in between his legs. Link gave a soft chuckle when you lay your head against his broad chest, pulling the blanket into place around the pair of you.
You both sat there, basking in the warm, amber glow of the fire, lost in the pools of each other's eyes.
Neither of you spoke, neither of you had to.

LOZ AU- The Courage of Running Away PART THREE
For the record this is already turning out way longer than I’d intended lmao I’d conceived of this as a three to five post AU and it’s going to take most of this week on its own even if I manage a few multi post days.
(I’m not bothered by this.)
#AU August
#LoZ AU: The Courage of Running Away
So first of all go read the previous post
So Link crashed into the sea and woke up to this:
Tumblr media
[Image description: Panel one: (an unseen speaker) Ooh! Oh!  He just moved, hang on- Panels two and three: The unseen person asks “Hey, Hey! Are you alive?”  Link groans, then opens his eyes groggily. Panel four is filled with the face of the Zora from before.  She is blue with yellow and black highlights like a Blue Tang, and gold eyes. She is wearing a red beaded necklace.  She is grinning with very sharp teeth.  A voice off camera says “Marla, you’re crowding him.”  Marla, her voice encircled with a heart, says “Hi!” Panel Five: Link sits up and screams. Panel Six: Marla has thrown her arms around a Goron with an exasperated and long suffering expression on his face.  She screams in response. End description]
And as I said in the last post, he’s made it as far as Windfish Isle, wayyyy down at the bottom of the AU’s map.
Tumblr media
[Image description: A scene of an island with much greenery, some buildings and a small volcano.  End description.]
Windfish Isle is obviously a reference to Koholint Island but here it's a real place; basically if this were a game there'd be an NPC who talked about the island being named for a legend about a god falling asleep here.
And it’s populated entirely and solely by Zora and Gorons, many of whom have never met a Hylian before.
Tumblr media
[Image Description: Four different Zora; a male with heavy dark stripes and a long head, a curvaceous blue female modeled after a blue anglerfish, a chubby yellow male with bright blue jewelry, and a Zora of indeterminate gender in purple and yellow.  A legend notes “Windfish Isle Zora take from reef fish” while another note reads “Jewelry usually semiprecious stone.”  End description.]
Tumblr media
[Image description: Two gray and dull brown Gorons with floppy hair giving each other a thumbs up.  They’re saying “Bruuuuhhh” in unison.  One is wearing a flower necklace and the other a floral shirt.  The legend reads “Windfish Isle Gorons: Not that different from Hyrulean Gorons tbh”]
(The Windfish Isle Gorons were going to be like, surfer bros and then I realized it really WAS just a more laidback version of usual Gorons lmao; I made them duller and cooler colors because I wanted to emphasize these are like.... Alolan variant aklsjdf)
Of course, having been from a sky commune where the only outsiders he was allowed to see were Rito and Hylians riding loftwings, Link’s never seen a Zora or Goron before, either:
Tumblr media
[Image description: A comic, continuing from the comic at the start of the post.  Link, wide eyed, asks, “Who- What are you?”  Marla leans into her Goron companion and says cheerfully, gesturing at herself, “Well, I’m a Marla and he’s a Tonbo!”  The Goron, Tonbo, says “Don’t confuse him, Marla.  I’m a GORON and she’s a ZORA.  And YOU are?”  Blushing, Link answers, “I-I’m LINK.  I’m a HYLIAN.”  In a softer voice either Tonbo or Marla comments, “Ahh, one of the human races, that makes sense.”  Then Link looks down to realize he’s covered only by a blanket, and hugging himself demands, “Wait, did you two STRIP ME?”  Hesitant, Marla says, “Well, we had to dry your clothes SOMEHOW and they seemed to be keeping you too cold.”  And Tonbo interjects, flatly, “Also we were curious.”  Marla blushes and grins, voice bubbly: “Also we were curious!” she echoes. End description]
For the record getting wet clothes off an unconscious person IS usually the correct way to make sure they warm back up, don’t look at me like that.
Tumblr media
[Image description: reference images for Marla and Tonbo.  Interspersed are little interaction sketches, such as Marla leaping into Tonbo’s arms away from a snake and Marla standing next to Tonbo to indicate that she’s shorter.  Marla is dark blue with black and yellow marks based on a blue tang, while Tonbo is a dark warm gray with silvery hair on his shoulders and in a mohawk on his head.  Marla wears a red beaded necklace with a shell locket and Tonbo wears blue swim shorts with red hibiscus flowers.  End description.]
So Marla and Tonbo are both a reference to Marin and Tarin AND a reference to Martha the Mermaid and the fact that every time I finished talking to her I’d get swarmed by the beefy oldschool Zora, which put me very much in mind of a bunch of dudes demanding “Is this guy bothering you, queen??”
The reference to Martha being why Marla has a necklace and the reference to Marin being why Tonbo is wearing hibiscus print shorts, lol.  Marla is based on a blue tang because both Martha and Marin have a lot of blue in their designs.  (Also because I thought it would be pretty.  Which it is.)
I didn’t actually INTEND for Marla to turn out to be such a goofball????  She opened her mouth and just fuckin went???  And Tonbo just settled in right after her, and it just turned out to be an absolutely amazing dynamic.
Marla and Tonbo are basically queerplatonic life partners because that’s how I roll lmao
Aaaand this is a long enough post asklfs see y’all next time

Also, most of these are supposed to be their own LU Spirit Tracks Link separate from Wind, but some are Wind in a Spirit Tracks outfit.

Also, if there's a design that's not in here, I probably just didn't see it! Feel free to tell me about anything I missed!
