Mariner, Odyssey’s cousin and formerly a member of EEG’s field team. Xe retired a few years ago, citing health issues. Xe is secretly plagued by the Visions, which xe didn’t realize were warnings until it was too late to do anything about them.
-> Mariner has yet to figure out what xe wants to do in xer retirement. Xe’s got the rest of xer life to work on it but like. Xe feels like xe should have an idea by now. Xe’s tried to pick up some hobbies, but nothing really clicked. Pottery is the one that’s stuck around the longest.
-> Interest in the work and relation to Odyssey is what initially drew Mariner to the team all those years ago, though xe was never as invested as xer cousin. In truth, xer passion for the job had begun to fade a decade prior to xer retirement, and the novelty of adventure soon wore out as xer chronic pain grew harder to ignore. Xe stayed as long as xe did to connect with Odyssey, and because xe’d already spent so much of xer life on this career choice and felt xe’d already missed xer chance to do something different now. Thinking xer mental health had suddenly taken a steep decline after a particular expedition is what finally gave xem the push to resign.
-> Xe doesn’t really have friends in retirement. Xe has acquaintances, and there’s people xe’s friendly with, but xe was never very good at forming new relationships outside of obligations like work and family. And xe spent a lot of years developing bonds with only one group of people, so it’s strange to be removed from that now. Xe was especially close with Odyssey, though their relationship is now on the rocks. Mariner doesn’t really try to get into contact with xer old friends, feeling awkward about having left (and the dreadful realization that what xe thought were hallucinations were actually a real threat/warning and xe has told nobody else about this and explaining gets harder the longer xe keeps the secret)
-> On one otherwise routine mission into the Otherworld, late into the project but before the Storm, Mariner encountered something alone. Xe hadn’t travelled far from the rest of the team, xe’s fairly sure, but suddenly xe felt a world away and something unknowable was there with xem. It could have been acting out of benevolence or malice or some secret third thing, but all the same, it struck Mariner with an overwhelming bundle of visions and senses beyond understanding that seemed to tear apart xer mind to fit, and brought xem to xer knees. Then it left Mariner abruptly, struggling to comprehend the experience and reassemble xemself.
-> Having some kind of mental break isn’t out of the question when you’re dealing with another world that seems hostile to the rules of your reality, so Mariner managed to convince xemself that’s all that had happened. Mostly. Xe’d hallucinated it, proof that prolonged exposure to this rift had worn xer mind thin (which. also may be true at the same time). Though very shaken, xe did not tell xer teammates the details of what had happened.
-> Xe went through the motions for a while longer, business as usual, though xe remained quietly bothered. Coming back into the standard plane of reality after the expedition didn’t resolve the problem. Instead, xer premonitions got worse. Xer dreams and waking moments alike were filled with portents of catastrophe and strife; xe grew used to panic attacks, but if the visions held any meaning xe couldn’t determine what. Xe held out for a few months before abruptly announcing xer retirement for the reasons of deteriorating health. Xe tried to convince Odyssey to join xem in retirement. Odyssey, though, was all but married to the job, and would never leave while Tune was still involved, and Tune was perhaps even more committed.
-> Mariner really tried to enjoy a peaceful retirement, but the sense of dread and the flashes of tragedy still would not cease. And still, xe could not parse any meaning. At least, not until xe received news of the disaster that had befallen the EEG some months later, and xe finally understood what xer curse had been warning xem about. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, xe could unscramble what the message had been.
-> Emboldened by fear and the knowledge that it was warranted, Mariner tried again to make Odyssey quit. It was far too soon after Tune’s presumed death, and Mariner wouldn’t speak of xer premonitions, feeling too much shame to admit xe could have done something. This did not go over well at all, and the resulting argument was a massive blow to their relationship.
-> They weren’t on speaking terms for a while, but with time and distance they have recovered Some of their relationship. They don’t talk about it. Both are far too stubborn to make apologies, so bringing it up would only cause more arguments. There’s still tension between them, but they can manage a casual conversation every now and then, checking in on each other occasionally.
-> Mariner still has xer precognitions. The visions are still not clear, but xe has some understanding of what xe’s dealing with now and can decipher a few points. It’s not over. Something terrible approaches again, and something is very very wrong with Spirit.

i often struggle with thinking that there's a correct answer to everything. on a physical level we have a "reality" (debatable) but anyhow beyond that all measurements and perceptions are subject to warping in some or another way and we'll never ever know what's real and what's true and Why things happen. man.

EEG and EMG Data for AI Training: Enhancing Precision in Machine Learning Models
In the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI), the need for diverse and high-quality datasets is paramount. One of the emerging trends in AI model training is the use of EEG (Electroencephalogram) and EMG (Electromyogram) data. These biosignals provide real-time insights into neural and muscular activity, opening new possibilities for training AI models in healthcare, robotics, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), and beyond.
What is EEG and EMG Data?
✅ EEG Data: EEG measures the electrical activity of the brain using electrodes placed on the scalp. It records voltage fluctuations resulting from neural activity, providing valuable insights into brainwave patterns. EEG data is widely used in neurology to detect seizures, sleep disorders, and cognitive impairments.
✅ EMG Data: EMG captures the electrical signals generated by muscle fibers during contraction. This data helps in understanding muscle activity, diagnosing neuromuscular disorders, and controlling prosthetic limbs or exoskeletons. EMG signals can be collected using surface electrodes or inserted needles for more detailed readings.
How EEG and EMG Data Enhance AI Training
Improved Pattern Recognition: AI models trained on EEG and EMG datasets can effectively recognize intricate patterns and variations in biosignals. These datasets are essential for developing systems that predict neurological and muscular responses with high accuracy.
Enhanced Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs): BCIs rely on EEG data to establish a direct communication channel between the brain and external devices. By training AI models on high-quality EEG data, researchers can create more responsive and accurate BCIs that assist individuals with motor disabilities.
Real-Time Muscle Control in Robotics: EMG data is extensively used to enhance prosthetics and exoskeletons. AI models trained on EMG signals enable these devices to adapt to the user’s movements in real-time, improving functionality and reducing latency.
Early Diagnosis and Prediction in Healthcare: AI models trained on EEG and EMG data can detect early signs of neurological and muscular disorders. By identifying abnormal patterns in biosignals, these models can assist in early diagnosis and improve patient outcomes.
Gesture Recognition and Human-Computer Interaction: EMG data facilitates gesture recognition by interpreting muscle activity patterns. AI-powered systems can translate these patterns into commands, enhancing human-computer interaction in gaming, virtual reality, and assistive technologies.
Challenges in Using EEG and EMG Data for AI Training
⚡ Signal Noise and Artifacts
Biosignals often contain noise and artifacts from external interference or motion. Cleaning and preprocessing this data is essential to ensure reliable AI training.
⚡ Data Variability and Subject Differences
EEG and EMG data can vary significantly across individuals. AI models need to be trained on large, diverse datasets to generalize effectively across different demographics.
⚡ High Dimensionality and Complexity
EEG and EMG datasets contain high-dimensional data that requires advanced feature extraction techniques to reduce complexity without losing critical information.
Applications of AI Models Trained on EEG and EMG Data
🔹 Healthcare Diagnostics: Early detection of epilepsy, ALS, and muscular dystrophy. 🔹 Neurorehabilitation: Assisting stroke patients with motor recovery. 🔹 Gaming and VR: Controlling virtual environments using neural and muscular signals. 🔹 Assistive Devices: Enhancing prosthetic limbs and mobility aids.
Future Potential of EEG and EMG Data in AI
The integration of EEG and EMG data into AI training models holds immense potential for transforming multiple industries. With advancements in deep learning, signal processing, and wearable technology, the accuracy and efficiency of AI systems based on biosignals are expected to improve dramatically.
As datasets grow and models become more refined, AI will play a pivotal role in revolutionizing healthcare, robotics, and beyond.
Conclusion
EEG and EMG data provide a rich foundation for training AI models capable of interpreting complex biosignals. Despite challenges such as signal noise and data variability, the potential applications in healthcare, BCIs, and assistive technology make it a game-changer for AI innovation.
As the collection and annotation of these datasets continue to improve, AI systems leveraging EEG and EMG data will push the boundaries of what’s possible in human-machine interaction.

Okay this is a huge step towards my goals. What it looks like is just a servo randomly moving but what you can't see in the background is an esp32 receiving a stream from my phone which is connected to an EEG headband. Specifically this is tracking gamma brain waves. The lower the number the less I'm actively thinking. There's a very long road ahead before I'm ready to integrate this into my ears and tail, but this is the first step, and since I'm not a software doggy, it's a big step. Next steps will be to capture the raw data and implement floating point average and servo smoothing to get a more consistent "animation" then it's just up to me to train my brain on how to make it do it's thing.

hi !!
i’m thinking about an egon spengler x reader where the reader has to take care of him because he’s worked too hard and burnt himself out
i lov him so much but i just know he doesn’t take care of himself the way he should
Overworked (Egon Spengler X Reader)
Masterlist
Request Something!
Summary: Egon had a tendency to throw himself into his work, and only you can pull him out of it.
***
You find him in his office like you always do. Hunched over his desk, scribbling in his notebook about whatever recent ghost encounters he and the other Ghostbusters have had today. You know he hears you enter the room, but he doesn’t say anything, too invested in his work.
“Egon.” You say softly as you approach him. “Don’t you think it’s time to go to bed?” You hope he won’t put up too much of a fight with your suggestion, even though you know better.
“Just a moment.” Your boyfriend replies monotonously, eyes never leaving the page he’s writing on. “I need to record some more data from our last paranormal capture.”
You sigh. “It’s two in the morning, Egon.” You try to say it in a reprimanding tone, but you’re too tired to sound stern.
Finally, he looks up at you. It’s not for long, but it’s enough for you to notice his exhaustion.
“I’m well aware of the time.” He says matter of factly. “But there’s still data to collect.” He looks back down at his notes. “You can go to bed, Y/n. I’m not stopping you from doing so.”
“I want to go to bed with you, Egon.” You reply, frustration starting to mix in with your tiredness. “I can tell you’re just as tired as I am.”
The statement seems to grab Egon’s attention, and he frowns slightly. Not that you’re able to see, with his face buried in his work. “I’m not tired.” He responds, clearly lying. “I’m just not quite done yet. Go to bed, Y/n, I’ll join you soon.”
Despite his insistence, you can tell he’s tired as hell. You frown, simultaneously loving and hating Egon’s dedication to his work.
Instead of listening to him and leaving, you inch towards him and carefully put your hand over his. It effectively halts his scribbling, which looks close to illegible. “Your work will be here tomorrow.” You say softly, as if trying to convince a child to stop playing with their favorite toy and go to sleep. “Now come to bed.”
Your voice is more pleading than demanding, and that seems to soften Egon and weaken his resolve. He looks down at his work, knowing you’re right but not wanting to admit it. The room is silent for a moment.
“Fine.” He says begrudgingly. Content with his surrender, although hesitant, you grip his hand and pull him out of his chair. You’re able to get him out of his office before he can try to tidy up his workspace, saying it can all wait until he’s well-rested.
As the two of you head to the bedroom, Egon seems to become more and more exhausted with every step. When his bed is in sight, he flops and slumps against the mattress, letting out a weary sigh and closing his eyes.
You laugh a bit in amusement. “Darling,” you say, reaching down to untie his shoes. “Don’t you think you should at least take off your coat?”
Egon grumbles, waiting until you’ve pulled his shoes off his feet to sit up. “I suppose you’re right.” He mutters, slowly shedding his lab coat and dropping it on the floor.
Somehow, you’re able to get him to change out of his stiff work clothes and into comfortable pajamas. After he’s appropriately dressed for bed, Egon drops onto the bed again, half-lidded eyes following you around the room as you get ready for bed before finally settling in next to him.
After hesitating for a moment, Egon reaches out and pulls you closer to him. He sighs in exhausted content as he leans his head against your shoulder. Carefully, you reach up and remove his glasses, which he had neglected to do. After setting them on your nightstand, your hand returns to comb your fingers through his hair.
“You have to stop overworking yourself, Eegs.” You whisper, slowly but surely losing consciousness. “It’s not good for you, no matter how valuable the work is.”
Egon leans into your touch. “I know.” He murmurs, voice slightly muffled by his face being pressed against you. “But the data… is important…”
“So is your sanity.” You reply. “Just… try to stop working at a decent time. People have nine to five’s for a reason, you know.”
Egon’s quiet, and if it wasn’t for his fingers gently toying with the hem of your shirt, you’d think he had finally dozed off. He knows you’re right. You always are, whether or not he likes to admit it. But the passion he has for his work always seems to outweigh his own wellbeing.
“I’ll try.” He finally says. “But no promises.”
You smile. You know you’ll probably be having this conversation every night until the end of time. But right now, his words are enough.
“Goodnight, Egon.” You say, reaching back to turn off the light on your nightstand before wrapping your limbs around him.
Egon welcomes your affections as he starts to drift off. The tension in his body seems to melt away with your touch. “Goodnight, darling.”

So we can see in the above images the methods Showfall Media is using to control gl!Sneeg gl!Charlie and gl!Ranboo, they use an already pre-existing technology called an Electroencephalogram (EEG). Now this technology has been in use for decades, and essentially how it works is that it uses electrodes placed onto your scalp combined with a conductive gel to measure the electrical activity in your brain, these electrical signals are usually referred to as “brain waves” and these brainwaves can be subdivided into four categories, Gamma (greater than 30 Hz), Beta (13-30 Hz), Alpha (8-12 Hz), Theta (3.5-7.5 Hz), and Delta (0.1-3.5 Hz)
These different brainwaves are generally assosiated with different emotions, awareness levels, brain activities, etc. Now if Showfall Media has installed these onto sneeg, charlie, and ranboo, that means they have access to their thoughts and feelings, but brainscanning isn’t an absolute precise device, it still takes a lot of human effort and time to properly interpret the brainwaves. If Showfall somehow had a tool to easily interpret the signals they could much more easily operate, say, a live show. Lucky for them there is already a real life solution to this problem, kinda.
Its called Brain Generative Pre-Training Transformer, or BrainGPT for short.  What its goal is, is to act as an assist tool for human neurologists to use in real neuroscience cases and case studies, what it does is it uses a Large Language Model (LLM) full of pre-existing human research papers and other neuroscience knowledge too vast for human comprehension. And whenever a neurologist hands BrainGPT a prompt, (such as anomalous finding or to asses the fields understanding of a certain topic) , “would generate likely data patterns reflecting its current synthesis of the scientific literature”  (braingpt.org)
Now in regards to Generation Loss, what this means is that Showfall Media potentially has acces to this sort of technology, and would be able to use it in the production of their shows, now BrainGPT has a good way to go before its widely avalable. But in the genloss au, it can be far into development at this point, and be available for companies to use in whatever way they see fit.
Now reading and decoding brain signals is one thing, but to mind control someone is far beyond what is capable today, but Showfall Media has somehow developed technology to do so, the way I’m guessing they did it is that they produced certain brainwaves from the electrodes on the actors heads to give them the emotional reactions they needed for the show. I can’t exactly get into the technical stuff cause I’m not a neurologist, but its just a hunch on how I think they did it.
As for the mind controlling devices themselves, I feel there’s a more subtextual reason as to why those objects in particular are chosen as the devices that are central to the show’s operation. Ranboo’s mask has been a heavy emphasis throughout Gen 1 TSE,
Its been a central figure in not only generation loss’ marketing, but also ranboo’s marketing, because when you think of ranboo one of the first things that pops up is the mask, atleast in the wider public’s eye.
But these general associations not only exist with Ranboo, with Slimcicle you usually think of the wide brim glasses, with Sneeg its his backwards cap, and this is with the other cast members too when their introduced on the spinning carousel in episode 2. Furthermore, with Niki it’s that’s she's just so nice, with Austin its that he’s just a gay guy,  and with Vinny and Ethan these associations don’t really exist. So, with Vinny he's just the “hoarder”, and Ethan isn't even introduced. And then there's Jerma, who is relinquished to a goofy character with a weird voice and a strange sense of humour which sort of fits his public image.
But what I wanna mention with Ranboo’s mask specifically is that with the three images shown on the genloss twitter of the control devices, sneeg’s is just a hat, like theres nothing special about it, just a hat with electrodes on it, when you take it off he’s completely in control of himself. But, with charlie’s it’s a good bit harder to just take it off. His glasses are drilled into his skull connected to electrodes which are also implanted in his skull, with an additional feature of a speaker in his jaw. But if you remove the glasses, there would be a lot of bleeding and his vision would be impaired, but he would still be a free man.
But with Ranboo, poor, poor, Ranboo… Like Charlie, they have electrodes implanted on to their brain connected to a switch on the back of their skull (which also may or may not also be connected to their spine, idk its hard to tell). These sprout wires that thread through the mask and lead into their throat, and the mask piece itself is sewn shut onto their SKIN.
Now this makes me wonder, why is Ranboo so heavily guarded when the other are (relatively) easy to set free? Is it because Ranboo is an integral part of the show and therefore high risk? Is it because Showfall needed extra resources for the chat to be able to control them?... Or is it because Ranboo tried to escape so many times before that they were forced to disfigure them to such an extreme degree, and yet somehow, SOMEHOW, they are able to resist, whether it be tapping SOS on their hand when they're on full control mode or shanking a Showfall employee with a dagger, Ranboo, Resists. But Showfall will never let them leave. Or they will? Idk founders cut hasn’t come out yet as of writing this, anyway ramble over. You can leave now.

Boo-hoo update
I’m sorry to say I have an update I was hoping to not ever have to make. Some of you already know that I have some serious health issues, but I've been pretty quiet about the extent of what I'm dealing with.
The gist of it is that I have a rare bone disease called fibrous dysplasia that turned certain bones in my skull into tumors and then those tumors grew inward and started crushing my brain, so I had a craniotomy last year to remove as much as was safe and got a cool new titanium implant in my head to replace the removed bone/tumor. The unfortunate result was encephalomalacia, which is the end stage of liquifying necrosis, and now part of my brain is liquid instead of solid (it’s dead, in a nutshell). Most people don’t survive encephalomalacia, much less remain able to function, and most who survive the initial stage don’t survive the three year mark. Even when you do survive it, it often continues spreading. The last MRI showed it had already taken over about 1/3 of my brain. But I’m a stubborn asshole and am still hanging on.
Unfortunately, things aren’t getting better.
I have to have constant MRIs, EEGs, physical and cognitive therapies, and have been on more meds than I’d like to be in order to control seizures and various cognitive issues. I didn’t mention this before, but I had to go through a series of speech therapies just to learn to talk properly again. And the most unfortunate part of this is that my ability to write has been affected. Since the surgery over a year ago, I’ve only made 10 new posts in the Positronic Rivalry series, totaling around 87k words. For reference, I posted over 200k words in 2022. I’ve posted even less this year, and it’s not improving.
With that said, I have to take a step back. I’m not quitting and I’m not walking away from the fandom. I’d like to think I’ll still be able to post here and there. I just don’t know when and under what circumstances that will happen. I most certainly can’t handle the longer multi-chapter fics I once could. Maybe one day, but not this day. Since I started posting on AO3 back at the end of 2021, I’ve posted every Sunday more often than not. I’m sorry to say I can’t make that happen right now, and can’t say when I’ll post again or what it will be. I won't be able to continue with season 4.
But I’m most definitely not leaving the fandom and the people and the characters I love so much. I’ll still be here interacting and posting when I’m able. This fandom and the people in it are incredible and mean a lot to me. Data and Lore and Star Trek in general are integral to my life and general enjoyment.
But!! I’ve nearly completed compiling seasons 1-3 of Positronic Rivalry as well as 2022/23 Kinktobers into files that will be ready to print in physical book format (completely free, obviously), which I’ll make available for everyone to download in various print sizes, complete with covers, which you can then have printed at various POD sites if you’re so inclined. Digital versions will also be available (you can already download various formats from AO3, but they’re not compiled into seasons, don’t have covers, etc.).
I’m also continuing with the Trek-themed crossword puzzles because those are fun and my therapist thinks making them is good for my cognitive rehab.
This update is a massive bummer for me, but I felt it was better to just admit my limitations instead of constantly trying to convince myself that I could continue the way I had been pre-surgery and beating myself up when I couldn’t.
Lastly, I’ve finally taken the suggestion I’ve gotten repeatedly and set up a KoFi. If you’d like to buy me a coffee or toss a coin to your android porn witcher, you can do so right here and I’d be giggling and kicking my feet in gratitude.
Anyhow, I want to thank all of you for being amazing and coming along on this ride with me for as long as you have, and for as long as it might continue in whatever form it takes.

The brain of a mass killer
- Robert Bowers PET Scan info
I've already done an info post about Pittsburgh shooting, you can check the post here
Tumblr media
"...
Erin Bigler, a clinical neuropsychologist and retired Brigham Young University professor of psychology and neuroscience, reviewed Bowers’ brain scans and psychological data collected by two other experts. Though Bigler noted that neither tests nor scans can definitively diagnose schizophrenia, he said Bowers’ brain showed asymmetries and dysfunctions often associated with the disorder.
According to Bigler, Bowers scored in the 91st percentile on the full-scale IQ test, indicating high overall cognitive ability. Full-scale IQ includes the averages of a number of subscales, including processing speed, where Bowers scored poorly.
Bowers scored in the 18th percentile for processing speed, which “tells us that elements of processing speed in Bowers’ brain [aren’t] working quite the way that it should,” Bigler said. Typically, processing-speed scores should be in a “relatively similar ballpark” to full-scale IQ scores. Bowers also had difficulties with some memory tests, Bigler said.
Bigler said that matches up with analysis provided by other defense witnesses, who found deficits in the amygdala and temporal lobes of Bowers’ brain, as well as high levels of white matter hyperintensities. People in their 40s, as Bowers was at the time of the test, typically have about four white matter hyperintensities, Bigler said. Bowers had 28 — mostly located in the frontal lobe, which can be associated with cognitive decline, he said. It’s unclear when the white matter hyperintensities began to develop. Bowers was also a smoker, which can contribute to the development of white matter hyperintensities, Bigler said.
..."
general impressions
!! It is worth remembering that Robert Bowers, as a child, faced psychological problems such as depression and anger issues [triggered by his relationship with his mother], which also physically affect the brain not only in proportions, but also in hormones and functioning. In addition, it is worth remembering that on the day of the attack, Robert Bowers exchanged gunfire with the police and suffered serious injuries. When he arrived at the hospital, a head injury was found !!

"...
In his testimony, Nadkarni, an expert on neuropsychiatry and epilepsy, detailed Bowers' psychiatric history, including repeated suicide attempts dating back to childhood and three involuntary commitments.
He said Bowers had a psychiatric history from a very young age, with suicide attempts dating back as for as when he was 10 years old.
A medical record from McKeesport Hospital entered into evidence documented that Bowers was admitted at age 13 after threatening to kill himself and assaulting his mother, throwing a flammable liquid on her and threatening to ignite it. Another record shows an involuntary commitment for treatment at St. John's Hospital at age 16. A third record showed Bowers' assessment at age 33, when he was put on an anti-depressant and recommended for referral to a psychiatrist. During that assessment, Bowers reported an attempt to commit suicide at age 17. He was also involuntarily committed in 2004.
A Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh medical record from when Bowers was 5 describes Bowers having a fever of 104 and says Bowers began to hallucinate, "speaking to people not present."
Nadkarni testified Bowers told him he believed that ink from clothing was being absorbed into his body, moving through his body, and making a wristband he was wearing change color.
He says Bowers' EEG showed evidence of severe brain abnormalities.
Nadkarni said Bowers is quick to agitation, becoming loud and growing angry and frustrated, especially when describing his mother's behavior from more than 30 years ago, "as if he was re-experiencing the event in the moment of retelling it."
..."
Dr. Siddhartha Nadkarni testified that, based on examining and interviewing the defendant that he diagnosed Bowers with schizophrenia and epilepsy.

that ask/meta about Bucky and sleeping broke my heart. I always feel sad when seeing that scene of them manhandling Bucky out of the vault and so but to know they manhandled him while he was basically dead is just sad as hell. he deserved better than a bunch of criminals doing that to him. 😔
while writing this a question came to my mind: what do you think are all the things attached to his body in that opening scene of civil war? I always thought the mask was oxygen but if he was basically dead then he didn't need oxygen, right? plus he's not wearing a mask in other times when we saw him being put under cryo, so what was that for? and the things around his chest??
Thanks for the ask! Cryo is not at all within the realm of my knowledge because there’s complicated physics involved 😂 And to be fair, I think this is classic movie science where the creators themselves have done very little research into how cryo is achieved.
This article provides a good run-down of the theory behind cryopreservation, but it’s from 2008 and technology and our understanding of cell metabolism is likely different now.
To summarise:
The subject needs to be cooled to -120C to be held in cryostasis. At these temperatures, chemical reactions are so slow that the cells can stay stable for centuries.
Blood is removed before the subject has been cooled below 0C and vitrification mixtures are injected into the subject to prevent ice crystal formation. This mixture is toxic, so has to be tightly controlled for the temperature it is given.
Another factor to control for is reperfusion injury upon warming and re-infusing the subject with blood.
Other interesting facts noted in that article is that humans have been cooled to 16-24C with cardiac arrest of more than an hour, then reawakened without neurological damage, which is impressive given brain damage is said to occur within minutes of cardiac arrest at normal body temperature.
Importantly though, the article doesn’t seem to mention any cases where an entire mammal has been successfully resurrected from cryo, much less multiple rounds of freeze-thaw cycles that Bucky had to go through. A lot of what it discusses in theory is on the basis of maximising the preservation of brain tissue, while sacrificing other organs to potential damage (I think the article said something along the lines of “in the future stem cell technology would take care of all those damaged organs!” which…isn’t going to help poor Buck out)
What I can’t find with my (very limited) reading is how the blood is stored after it is replaced. Presumably it is also cryopreserved separately? Because transfusing someone else’s blood into the subject’s body will cause huge issues. The other major difference between current data and Bucky’s situation is that current cryo methods are for the preservation of recently deceased bodies, while Bucky is still alive when he is placed into cryo.
Tumblr media
So uh, assuming Bucky’s cryo is anything based in current real world science, he’s likely to have attachments for: heart monitoring and defibrillation, airway support and oxygen supply, large bore intravenous lines for rapid blood removal and replacement which would also help control the cooling/warming, some sort of real time monitoring of acid-base and electrolyte and oxygenation levels and replacement, and maybe some sort of EEG to monitor brainwaves. The blue glowing buttons are kiiiinda in the right place for heart monitor if we’re assuming a 3-lead system and the other one is hidden on his right side.
Keep in mind, this is not taking into account any magic effect the serum might have, ie maybe cryosuspension and revitalisation is only possible because of the serum, and maybe crystallisation isn’t an issue because of the serum.
And this is going to be TMI but I wonder what the effect of intestinal contents would be on cryo. Limiting his intestinal contents is partly the reason why I feel like Bucky likely didn’t have a lot of chance to eat real food, and likely got most of his nutrition as some sort of prescribed nutrition mix that would give him the energy hit he needs for the mission. Assuming that his gut will go into hibernation mode with cryo and probably won’t digest properly at least for a few days (much longer if he were a normal human), I suspect they’ll go for IV nutrition if they need him functional quickly. (* This won’t be one of his lines during cryo obviously cos he won’t need the support)
So yeah, all those fics about Bucky exploring oral textures and tastes of foods as a part of his recovery has a special place in my heart.

Note
This was several days ago but it was still bugging me (autistic) so I have to be a little pedantic about your tags on the pop neuroscience post: https://www.tumblr.com/drdemonprince/742517045406613504?source=share
The post is 100%. Pop neurosci is complete bullshit. All this "dopamine"/other neurotransmitter stuff people talk about especially.
With your tags though, please don't conflate the entire field of neuroscience with fMRI. For sure, 90% or more of fMRI is total bunk, I am with you. But there are many methodologies besides fMRI. And decades of neuroscience research that is real science. Including actual experimental methods that can establish causality, unlike fMRI. Much of that is done in lab animals. (Don't want to get into animal research ethics here but there is plenty of humane, non-horrifying animal research in neuroscience, although most of it does end with the animal being humanely euthanized. Of course some people hold the position that we should never raise, keep, or euthanize animals for research purposes, which is a valid position that I don't happen to agree with.)
Almost all of what the field of neuroscience actually knows about neurotransmitters is from animal research. So when you say we have no experimental data on that - not true, we totally do, just not much of it in humans.
We even do have a way to look at real time neurotransmitter release in living human brains, by injecting people with e.g. a radioactive dopamine-receptor-binding chemical and then do PET imaging to visualize the movement of the radioactivity in their brain while they do tasks/view stimuli. As their own dopamine floods an area, the radioligand is displaced (it's designed to be a weaker binder to the receptor than natural dopamine) and you can infer dopamine release in that area. It's indirect, correlational, and does involve some fancy math (but not as bad as fMRI). But it is a method that has produced meaningful findings. Nora Volkow is one of the scientists who used that methodology to study cocaine addiction among other things. Her research combined with neuroscience using lab animals contributes to the modern understanding of dopamine's role in drug craving and drug-seeking behavior, and how dopamine has nothing to do with the pleasure or high from the drug.
There are other valuable findings from human research that are not fMRI. Including stuff done on people getting brain surgery (kinda "poke this and see what happens", but it does establish causality); TMS which experimentally disrupts certain areas; studies of people with brain damage; and histological and anatomical studies of human brains donated to science postmortem, where you can look neuron by neuron which you can't do with fMRI or other imaging or EEG. And, fMRI/imaging has produced a LITTLE bit of worthwhile stuff. Just...not much, I agree.
I think coming from social psychology you may have been mainly exposed to "social neuroscience" which is generally fMRI about social psychology stuff. And often being done by social psychologists with not enough neuroscience background, not that fMRI is done rigorously by those people either, but it doesn't help. But that is not all of neuroscience! I used to do neuroscience and taught it to college students for 10 years. It is so much more than hogwash fMRI, I promise!
Thanks for the message. If you'll bear with me being mildly pedantic back (Autism), since we were discussing the topic of anti-psychiatry, I think there being no real studies of neurotransmitter activity in humans as it relates to any kind of psychiatric drug/treatment in field is tantamount to there being no useful ecologically valid knowledge on it. Lab animal research just does not generalize well enough to ground anything that psychiatry is doing or prescribing or that is being reported in the popular press.
And I would certainly chalk up "poke and see what happens" style brain surgery as being under the "exploratory, not science" banner that I already mentioned. To say that we can establish causality with that kind of methodology is just not true. It's also just not generalizable. There is so much we don't know about variation in brain organization.
You are absolutely right that my main area of direct involvement was working in a social cognitive neuroscience lab with an FMRI and an EEG, doing absolute fuckall nonsense, but that's not all that I have familiarity with or training in. Your notes are well taken, and I sincerely thank you for them and I'm sure a lot of people will find them interesting, but I think we're still very much in the dark ages in understanding this stuff, and that stance of mine does incorporate those methodologies.

This abstract outlines a project of four interrelated modular non modular synergistic theories which are Perspective Theory, Personal Engineering, The Theory of the Wireframe Neural Correlate Streamlined UI of the Human Mind, and The Euclidean MindMap. These ideas in conjunction with each other synergize when applied to form a comprehensive system capable of the very least revolutionizing personal experience and may potentially allow the conceptual framework for a theory of everything to naturally emerge if there are enough agents that engage with the contained principles, systems and methodologies. The collective integrated output of these four systems is called significant sentience which will be integrated into an ARG experience for the public for general dissemination, rollout, and incorporation of the core principles of these theories into the public psyche and eventual universal implementation in global society.
To demonstrate Personal Engineering I will take its application in a hypothetical life as a case study. To show the potential of Perspective Theory I am going to axiomatize several TESCpm textbooks using the principles I describe. To collaborate the theory of The Theory Wireframe Neural Correlate Streamlined UI of the Human Mind I will cite literature supporting this hypothesis as well as contrast with data that refutes it. For the EU I am going to develop software to demonstrate its use in vitro and run several cognitive experiments via EEG to demonstrate its validity.
Applications and methods of personal engineering has the potential to be extremely abusable and development of a unified field but be done very carefully. Eg Operational psychology and is abuse of humans rights and ethics.Rich get richer, could be used to create select group of elites with a monopoly of personal engineering. Ethical responsibility to carefully develop, regulate and release personal engineering
Applied personal engineering is not solely a truth seeking enterprise as the goal and purpose of applied personal engineering is not to come close as possible to truth rather to work efficiently towards clearly defined, realistic and regularly reviewed objectives that an individual chooses carefully in line with their values, belief system, wants and needs and rights as possible.
Perspective theory, implies using axioms and logical frameworks to create models that accommodate diverse belief systems. By applying this theory, it might be possible to reconcile atheistic and religious worldviews within the same population through the following approaches:
Common Axioms: Identify shared axioms or foundational beliefs that both atheistic and religious perspectives can agree upon. These could include values like compassion, community, and the pursuit of knowledge.
Multiple Perspectives: Encourage viewing the same concepts from different perspectives. For instance, scientific explanations and religious narratives can be seen as different lenses through which to understand the world, each offering unique insights.
Suspension of Disbelief: Use the concept of suspension of disbelief to temporarily set aside conflicting beliefs and explore the other's viewpoint. This can foster empathy and understanding.
Logical Consistency: Ensure that the models constructed from these perspectives are logically consistent, minimizing cognitive dissonance and allowing for a coherent coexistence of differing views.
Dialogue and Integration: Facilitate open dialogue and integration of ideas, where both atheistic and religious individuals can contribute to a shared understanding of complex issues.
Focus on Shared Goals: Emphasize common goals, such as improving human well-being and understanding the universe, which can unite people despite differing beliefs.
As a research area personal engineering is a truth seeking area and should examine and develop theories, methodologies and claims with to the rigorous and thorough standards the scientific method and peer review
