So twelve weeks to the day after sowing I have carrots!

Both from Ferry Morse seed packets picked up from the library seed swap in February.

I did a taste test from a slice taken from the center of the biggest carrot of each variety. Both had mild acidity, but the Chantenay was a bit worse. I think they'll be fine when cooked, but they're a little more bitter than I'd like for fresh-eating. They did both have nice textures.

I'm not surprised with that development given the wild swings in temperature we've had this spring, hitting the 90s for a period in both early April and May. Thanks to the rain being fairly consistent, I only had to hand-water them maybe twice.

I've got enough seed for an early fall sowing so it will be interesting to contrast the results. I know next year I'm going to try sowing them a few weeks earlier, maybe covering them with a strip of black plastic to raise the temperature for germination, to see if having more of the maturation in cooler weather helps.
