How Much Dialogue Each Character has in PLvsPW

I made some graphs about the amount of dialogue each character has in Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright, because I'm a graphs kind of lady :)

The color coding will make more sense when you see the 2nd graph, but it’s basically unique colors for major characters, and category-based colors for minor characters (witnesses and Flynch = blue, characters who give puzzles = orange)

I was curious what it’d look like if you grouped the word counts according to characters’ series of origin, so here’s that:

Some notes about the 2nd graph:

“Puzzle characters” are characters who give you a puzzle (or only show up in the puzzle gameplay segments) and are not part of the trials

“Trial characters” are the witnesses and Flynch (although all of the dialogue they have outside of the trials still counts towards their total, fwiw)

The unlabeled part at the bottom of the PLvPW column is the Storyteller, with 5,200 words, and the one at the bottom of the PL column is Chelmey with 986 words (couldn’t get the labels to fit lol). Edgeworth has 50 words fwiw, which isn’t really enough to be visible (although he technically is represented on the graph, as a tiny line at the top of the AA column)

Also, in case it’s not obvious, the judges are grouped into the PLvsPW column because they’re not the same character as the AA judge. The English and Labyrinthian judges are also lumped together due to them being labelled the same in the data and there not really being a good way to separate them out with how the data is structured         

Part of my inspiration for making the second graph was that PLvPW seemed like more of an Ace Attorney game than a Professor Layton game to me based on vibes, and I was curious whether the balance of dialogue would reflect that (with the caveat that the dialogue would naturally skew towards the AA characters since the trial gameplay is more dialogue heavy than the puzzle gameplay is). To be clear, I don’t mean that as a criticism of the game or anything—I enjoyed it a lot!—I just thought it leaned more heavily on the AA side compared to the PL side, and I was curious what that leaning might look like, numbers-wise

With that said, the overall dialogue word count totals end up being 99,256 for PLvsPW characters, 63,633 for AA characters, and 48,070 for the PL characters, a 47%/30%/23% split, respectively, although notably that's counting expy characters (like Flynch) towards PLvsPW

Some observations:

Layton and Luke have way more dialogue in PLvsPW than they do across the first couple PL games (Layton has ~19k and Luke has ~10k total words of dialogue across both Curious Village and Diabolical Box combined, vs ~29k and ~18k here). I don't have data readily available for any of the later games, so IDK how those would compare, though

The overall total character-based dialogue word count is 210,959 words, which is about the same as AA1 or AA2 (which have roughly ~210k words of dialogue) but less than AA3 or AAI1 (~260k words)

The vigilantes collectively have more dialogue than the Storyteller, which is just wild to me

Data source: I used the scripts that Jozerick posted to the Court Records forums, which pulled the text from the PLvPW ROM. I wrote a python script to process those scripts further to use like this, so there’s a chance I introduced some error with that, but the numbers should be pretty accurate.

Word counts: The data set DOES include dialogue from the animated cutscenes, but it does NOT include puzzle instructions/hints, any descriptions from the Court Record, or interjections that have a gif rather than normal text dialogue (“Objection!” etc.). It also doesn’t include the dialogue from the special episodes, since those weren't included in the data source I used.

Teaser: Enter with mad baking skills, leave covered in Antares-style beef brisket… and also your own blood. As far as Captain’s Dinners go, this one’s for the history books.

Baking is an art, and a time consumer, so you made it a point to show up first to the Captain’s quarters for dinner prep. You couldn’t help your perfectionism, bread is Your Thing, and not even Chris was allowed to help you.

Chris could grill almost as well as he could command a starship, but you, you were a chemist! And a punctual one! That bread was going to be fresh out of the oven the second everyone sat down and no one was gonna stop you!

Culinary arsenal in hand, you rang.

“Come!”

The doors slid open, and Pike was already hard at work.

“Chris-aptain! Hey!”

“Y/N! Exactly on time as usual, and I thought Vulcans were punctual.” Pike laughed at your half-assed attempt at addressing him professionally.

“Yeah well, you know how I feel about buns.” You put dropped off ingredients and sidled to the countertop next to him, giving him a quick swat to that excellent keister of his.

“You! You, are ridiculous.” he jumped, in fake indignation, stifling a giggle.

“Oh I know, I got stuff for rosemary bread and Bolian olive bread, how does that sound?”

“Go for it, Ensign Zier is Bolian isn’t she? I’m sure she’ll appreciate it!”

“It’s what I had in mind, she’s in my department after all, ought to make her feel welcome.”

“That is the goal.” Damn, if that smile couldn’t light up a room.

“Got any plans for later?” Chris covered the brisket and made his way over to your workspace.

“Uh, ahah, you mean like for desert? Because, I mean, La’an’s coming, I was thinking strawberry shortcake so, uh…”

“That isn’t quite what I meant but-“

The door chimed, you didn’t think it was possible to think the words ‘thank god’ and ‘god damnit’ at the same time but, here you were.

As other guests trickled in and hopped to work there wasn’t any time left for you and Pike to mess around. After all, you didn’t wanna get behind schedule and there was only so much space in the oven.

Dinner went off without a hitch, the command duo dominated the conversation with their usual charm and vigor. The Cadet of the evening got their usual ‘Decade Question’. You snuck a joke or comment in here and there but mostly let your work speak for you. Drinks were served, people went in for seconds, you got up to pour yourself another Scotch.

Somebody gasped at you so hard that they started choking and another person had to help them. Somebody else (Una?) went to help Zier up. “Chris!” oh yeah, that was loud, and that was Una. Zier wouldn’t shut the hell up and stop apologizing. Shit, now the oven is going off. Bad timing. For once.

The Captain’s expression had gone from confused to white as a sheet as he made a B-line for you. You used him and your not-stabbed-with-a-fork hand to brace yourself. Gross, you were bleeding everywhere.

“Tell Sam if he lets my shortcakes burn I will kill him.” you said through gritted teeth as the wonderful sensation of being stabbed took hold and the adrenaline wore off.

The Captain gave a hard glance at Kirk and nodded toward the oven, Sam gave a vague ‘Why me?!’ gesture with his mouth full of brisket, but scuttled over to the oven anyway.

Chris hoisted you up to your feet and hauled ass. You hadn’t lost that much blood you didn’t need to be carried. Right?

Frankly Chris didn’t seem to care and it was faster to just let him help you. You tried to stumble out of the turbolift without his help but the Captain was just not having it, next thing you knew you were in Sickbay.

“What happened? Is that a fork?!” Chapel set down a data pad and rushed over to you, dermal regenerator in hand.

“Sir please stop hovering, it’s gonna be fine. This isn’t the first time either of us has dealt with a stab wound.”

“Right, sorry.”

About fifteen minutes of Chapel being your new best friend and occasionally shooing Chris away later, your hand was good as new.

“You okay?” Chris ventured

“Physically? Yeah. But all that… that was rough.”

“Yeah it was! I don’t think we’ll be living that one down anytime soon.”

“Neither will Zier.”

“Oh relax Y/N, it was an accident.”

“I know, I’m joking Chris, I think, maybe.”

He laughed “You know, there was one dinner a few years ago where that wasn’t an accident?”

“A kid stabbed a superior officer on purpose?!”

“Yeah, but I think I’ll save that story for another time. Would probably be in poor taste at this point.”

“Understatement of the year.”

“You ready to get back in there and see what the damage is?”

“Yeah, hopefully the shortcakes turn out okay.”

“It’ll be fine, you put sweat, tears AND blood into those shortcakes. La’an is… intense, she’ll probably love you for that kind of thing.”

“She would yeah!” you laughed, always a delightful surprise when Chris did some good natured ribbing.

So. What does this mean. I remember doing the math for when the Ultimate Weapon/ the first kalosian war but Tumblr won't let me find it so! Time to do this allllllll over again. Which isn't hard lol. The events of the ultimate weapon was 3,000 years before XY. My version of XY takes place in 2014. Doing the math, that would mean the ultimate weapon was fired and AZ became immortal in 986.

My version of Emerald/ORAS takes place in 2006. Zinnia stated that AZ was there to witness the mega Rayquaza stopping Primal Groudon and Kyogre 1000 years ago. Again, doing the quick math, that would be in 1006.

This means that

1) Surprisingly, in the Legendverse, the ultimate weapon is more ancient that the fight between the ancient pokemon. I mean. It's likely they've fought before, but they were witnesses this time to record it.

2) Between the ultimate weapon and the fight between the primal ancient pokemon, AZ has been immortal for 20 years then. I like to think that by that point in time, it really sunk to AZ that he was going to live forever. Not that one can't just live for 20 years, but given what AZ has been through, I can see it.

3) Looking up Sootopolis City, it was created 1000 years from the main events of the game, which was also the time the primal legendaries fought and mega Rayquaza stopped them. We aldo know that AZ was there. We don't know how long it was until the citizens of Sootopolis actually came to Sootopolis, though it can be assumed a few years after the place was created. Let's say 2-5 years for at least people to get in. And given how AZ gave the tree in front of the cave of Origin, it can be theorized that the tree was planted around 1008-1011, at least.

I won't lie. This is pretty useless knowledge regarding the overall legendverse. I mean not in the lore, this is pretty important to the history and culture of Hoenn and Kalos. But will it feed into anything? Probably not.
