realizing more and more lately that i find no/low empathy heroes really fucking fun to write. like... characters who do not empathize with anyone ever, or maybe feel empathy under very specific and rare circumstances, and are striving to do The Right Thing regardless. they don't need to empathize with the people in this situation to want to do something about it
#multi makes text posts#just kinda thinking out loud#idk eden's so fucking fun to write#i loveeee thinking about why he does the things he does and why he thinks the way he does#especially in regards to his sense of justice and views of right and wrong#and how his low/no empathy plays into that#it's interesting to me

First off, just, you and your writing is amazing. Like chef's kiss 💋 amazing. Everytime a new chapter of ECM updates I read the chapter twice by itself, read the previous chapter and the new chapter, and then start the whole fic over from the beginning so I can absorb the words into my soul.
Now, I was curious. I have a few interconnected questions if its ok? (I have very limited knowledge of DC Universe so if I get this wrong I apologize) From what I understand there is a collar in DCU similar to the Marvel Universe that can turn off a metas power? And if so, through all the different dimensions and rewrites Peter's body went thru, would you say that if one was put on Peter he would be ok because in this universe his body never had Asthma or needed glasses or would it do nothing, or would he automatically be needing an inhaler, glasses, and feel kitten weak?
How likely would it be that Batman is the one to put the collar on him, either out of suspicion or because he thinks Peter dangerous (he comes into a situation out of context) and if this was the case would Peter would have a bad reaction?
If none of this makes sense I do apologize. But it was something that had been rocking around in my brain for a bit.
thank-you so much! I'm glad you've enjoyed it so far!!!
While I can't remember if I've come across the collars in the comics (they might have been featured in the Rebirth RHATO?), I've seen them in both the animated suicide squad and Young Justice. And I actually think they'd have a greater success on Peter than the collars in the Marvel comics (not sure if they've been used on Peter before????) since he's a mutate not a mutant (therefore no x-gene).
In regards to how they'd effect Peter, I don't think he'd revert to pre-bite Peter with the asthma etc (even before the Gotham re-write) because the bite itself led to a full physiological re-write of Peter's body. Meaning he'd be de-powered but be effectively a non-powered human. He'd certainly feel weak as a baby though, since he's so used to that strength, but otherwise no.
In regards to Batman putting a collar on Peter, the odds of that are pretty much non-existent. I know in the story hasn't been especially sympathetic towards Bruce/Batman, but I'd like to note that each of these instances have been told from Jason's perspective. Like Peter, he is far from an objective narrator and his past experiences with Bruce/Batman have shaped the way he views Batman/Bruce. Jason's POV represents reality as much as Peter's POV represents reality (which is to say, not faithfully - but they're not deliberately unreliable, either).
I've said before, in both notes and my interim chapter, that Batman is not anti-meta. He's also not anti-Jason. Unfortunately, Jason's both unwilling and unable to realise this (because! Past Actions! Have Consequences Bruce!). Likewise, most instances of Jason fearing Bruce will chase Peter away come not from an expectation that Bruce will deliberately chase Peter away, but that Peter will run if Bruce sticks his nose into things that are currently in a very delicate balance (flight risk princess anyone??).
But just because we haven't seen much from Bruce doesn't mean he's not been working behind the scenes. He's wary of Spider-Man because he's affiliated with the Red Hood (and because he's such a fresh face on the scene), but that doesn't mean he's about to discount the stories he's heard from actual people who've actually interacted with him (Cass's judgement of Spider-Man for instance went a long way). If Batman was anti-Spider-Man, he would have chased right after them after Pyg.
Despite the negative portrayal of Bruce so far, I've no interest in engaging in any kind of character bashing/assassination of Bruce/Batman. I think that like his children (Jason included), he's a flawed character whom the narrative (of the comics that is) has a tendency to portray as being the one to always be in the right because Batman=Good+Right sells.
*coughs* anyway, I'm going to sheepishly step back from the soapbox I was about to climb up on. Long and short of it is, the only reason Bruce (or anyone) would use the collar on Peter is if Peter went out of control. ✌️
Thank-you for your questions!!! I love seeing how people have been thinking about the world of ECM!

𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒆—𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒛 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔
Hey there friends! Got around to writing this post <3 sat by a window and watched the pretty autumn leaves. This does not replace legal advice nor does it dictate what will happen in reality. These are just my thoughts and predictions regarding the case of the Menendez brothers. I am so privileged to be able to learn and study under them, so respect to the survivors. May they be released 🙏🏻
Sign this petition to help free the Menendez Brothers 🤍

November 26, 2024 is the retrial date for the Menendez brothers. How will the transits affect their retrial? Let’s take a look—>
Lyles’ transit Sun conj. Venus—This is favorable in terms of reclaiming his image and voice after so long. Both planets sit in the 8h which denotes a transformation after hardship, a complete unveiling of the truth. Think of it like an eclipse. It unfolds right before your eyes: reclaiming what was the truth all along. The masses will be rooting for them especially since Venus conj. Sun is here. News will travel fast of this case, and many eyes will be on the trial.
With this as well, Venus is all about fairness and restoring justice, so Venus conj. sun adds a well needed touch to their case. This unveiled evidence is helping the brothers greatly.
His transit venus is conj. natal sun in the 9h—Amazing for teaching the system how it failed them. Regarding the new evidence popping up, a district attorney recently spoke up about the retrial and said considerably, “the brothers did not get a fair trial. It was a misjustice.” This case will highlight how the systems’ approach needs to change regarding males being sexually abused, and will serve as a strong reminder on how to treat survivors moving forward.
Both are sitting in Capricorn which is absolutely important, Capricorn is all about structure and foundations. It has ties to the government as well and how our system performs. Capricorn rules political structures, and authorities. This time around Lyle and Erik will be receiving a lot more compassionate eyes from the judges, and much better treatment in terms of their community. Venus comes to correct the system as well, since it falls in Capricorn, bringing about much needed change regarding their legal system.
Venus here in this case will cause their trial to reach many hearts no matter the distance. It is emotional.
Their case will be viewed fairly, and be calculated with a sharper eye since 1996, the ruling system was practically shit. It’s even possible Lyle might go on to give long speeches of his past and his prison life, after the trial to reach the masses. He may mostly focus on what he did to help him cope, and become a motivational speaker of some kind. People will look up to them as agents of change.
Agents coming to whip the government in shape!
We also have scorpio sitting in the 7h of long term partnership—it’s possible this evidence will drudge up deeper issues in the case and how it was handled. Muddy, chaotic and yet highlighting how it all was handled wrong. I wouldn’t be surprised if the judge was called out for handling the case indifferently here, especially by the media.
With the ruler landing in Leo transit of the 4h, even more will come to light regarding the Menendez brothers home life. This time it will be met with a lot of passion, support and respect from the masses. Expect to be a lot of uproar if the case is mishandled or criticized—people will be on it. With the ruler sitting here, it’s possible any deception in the legal system in 1996 during the sentencing could be pointed out. It will be talked about, leaving absolutely nothing behind. It will be uncovered because Mars is about conflict, chaos, division, so it’s bringing important aspects the system failed to meet.
With transit mars in the 4th house the brothers are discussing their case with a sense of boldness. Especially since it falls in Leo. This time it seems both have found their voice amongst the pain. It is still an emotional rollercoaster for them both on trial however, but this time there is a renewed confidence.
Libra transit moon conj. Lilith—The Menendez brothers case, along with the “Monsters” documentary made by Ryan Murphy, will still be objectified unfortunately. On the other side of the enormous support and love this time around—there will still be people determined to bring down the brothers. Contradicting stories will be in the news, reporters and district attorneys may have completely different views of the case. Potential for a lot of bias, misandry especially from women who projected their personal feelings onto the case. I mostly see the women could have a bias take on the brothers, women who are reporters or journalists covering the situation.
The documentary in conjunction with the trial will bring about even more spotlight onto the brothers. Both in a redeeming light, and yet somehow still considered an outcast for their murders.
Natal saturn conj. NN retrograde—Revisiting what went wrong. Rectifying. Feels like life is starting over the way it should’ve 32 years ago when they got imprisoned. Lyle will also be nearing the end of his saturn return which amplifies this even further. Strong vibes of discussing the authority system and evaluating who should be the one to decide what is considered guilty vs innocent. Especially with NN being in Aries & saturn. Reevaluating authors figures.
Pisces rising—I’d like to think of this as the brothers being seen with fresh eyes. Being seen in a more rejuvenating light. With transit saturn in the 1h, Lyle will be approaching the trial more structured, disciplined, and definitely wise beyond the years. Both the brothers are nearing the end of a painful cycle here because Pisces denotes that. Pisces is all about the ending of a cycle before starting anew (Aries)
Transit Pluto conj, natal mercury—Pluto is giving Lyle and Erik a platform, a voice to share their trauma and pain once again. This trial will definitely allow Lyle and Erik to open up and be heard. It’s emotional for them and they will be revisiting feelings of abuse and trauma. At the same time it feels like liberation and release for them.
Transit Mercury retrograde in the 8h—Unveiling the traumatic doings of their childhood is difficult for both the brothers, and yet it serves as an astounding foundation for change regarding the justice system. Massive revelations, and information that was hidden will be revealed regarding the legal case. Any legal experts, attorneys that dragged the boys will be prosecuted in the media heavily.
With transit Saturn squaring natal Venus—The divide is still present. I could view this as women in higher positions looking down upon the brothers still, such as reporters and journalists. I can also see this as this trial being very difficult regarding Erik and Lyle, it’s tense. Especially since both are aware of what is happening in the media industry with them being villainized and sexualized.
With Saturn in Pisces in the 11h I feel that if the brothers emerge from prison, it’s almost a shock to them to see the supporters by their side. Tammi, Eriks wife has a TikTok where Erik spoke briefly on there. He didn’t seem to quite understand or grasp the magnitude of support. But I have a feeling when they do come out it’ll feel like a dream for them, because this is all they ever wanted.
Lastly, with Sun trine Saturn the brothers will definitely be experiencing long term fame, since Saturn falls in the 11h. But this fame has a double edged sword as the community is still divided on what to believe regarding the misrepresented brothers. Especially since most of them refuse to understand their story.
Thank ya’ll for reading 🙏🏻 please sign the petition to help support the brothers! It only takes a few minutes of your time. That being said astrology is a tool—it is not something to religiously rely on. I think it serves as an asset! Please let me know your feedback or comments below :) like and reblogs help!

Linkle’s Fazbear Frights & Lore Insights #3: Count the Ways
[Read the general disclaimer and important notes for this series of articles here.]
[View the Masterlist of all completed articles here.]
Some Count the Ways specific notes:
I may be briefly talking about one of the mini-games in the game version of Into the Pit which revolves around Count the Ways, and in general, discussions about the book version and my thoughts on it in my previous article, as well as my thoughts on To Be Beautiful, may come up at certain points, so if you want to completely avoid Into the Pit and To Be Beautiful spoilers, maybe hold off on this one for now.
Again, my takes on William as a father, in regards to the games, may ruffle more than a few feathers of people who still insist on holding onto some of the old fanon stuff/do not believe in Frights Fiction. If you don’t like it and won’t go into it with an open mind, please just don’t read it; I’m not really in the mental state to go through a thousand comments trying to convince me of a notion that I simply don’t personally feel has any logical evidence behind it.
Now that that’s been said, let’s jump below the cut and get right to it! This is your last spoiler warning for Count the Ways, so if you want to turn back, do so now.
Overall Impressions
The Book:
I have to say, in terms of story, this one honestly just might be my favorite of the book. Don’t get me wrong; Into the Pit and To Be Beautiful are both great stories that I enjoyed listening to quite a lot, but the constant looming sense of danger and dread that this story oozes throughout every page and the way that it’s so expertly written so as to make all of the flashbacks feel natural through Millie’s reminiscence at the end of her life is something that simply can’t be outdone.
There is something especially, absolutely terrifying about the helplessness with which this tale is framed from beginning to end, knowing that Millie is trapped and there is absolutely nothing she can do but look back and reflect on every little thing that led her to where she is now, and the soon-to-be tragic end of her life that is — despite all her best efforts — inescapable.
Funtime Freddy’s horrifyingly menacing personality, too, with his cheerfully cold outlook, has to be one of my favorite things in the Frights series thus far; it’s such a fun, believable, and yet deeply unsettling characterization for such a relatively innocent-and-friendly-looking animatronic, and it frankly makes me hope that we will eventually get to see him again.
Millie and her grandpa, too, are quite unique, well-rounded, likeable and interesting characters for the length of the story we are given, and I have to say that I’m quite glad that Millie’s crush, Dylan, isn’t framed as a bad person for not being in love with Millie and having chosen someone else — which I feared the book might do, when I found out he was with the cheerleader of the school.
I’m glad that Millie is admonished by Dylan for the hypocrisy of her judgement of others based on their looks and interests, as I think that Millie being a genuinely flawed character makes her much more interesting than if she were treated as a complete victim and her judgment of Dylan’s girlfriend was proven to be correct.
As for the general theme I believe the book was trying to explore outside of the context of FNAF lore — how, often, when we say we want to die, what we actually mean is just that we want life to be different and better, and how, in those scenarios, the concept of dying is a form of escapism rather than a serious desire — I think that it was gotten across quite well, and in a very thought-provoking manner.
There is a lot more that I could say on the depth of this subject and hard-hitting themes that it tackles so beautifully, but I don’t want to spend too long in this section, as I know that the lore is what most people want to hear about, and I fear that I couldn’t do it the justice I desire, anyway, so for now, let us move on.
Normally, I would be cutting to a section where I talk about another version of the story that exist, but at the time of writing this, there is no graphic novel of Count the Ways, and I don’t really have much to say about the Count the Ways mini-game in the video game adaptation of Into the Pit, other than…it’s confusing, and I don’t really understand what it’s getting at half the time in relation to the story it’s supposed to be based on.
Lore Relevancy
Honestly, despite how much I loved this story, this is probably going to be one of the shortest posts I’ll make in regards to the lore relevancy section, since it’s really…pretty straightforward in its points of interest and, at least as far as I could tell each time I went through it, there isn’t all that much to speculate on, either.
The Lies and Half-truths
Well, calling Funtime Freddy pink was certainly one of the choices ever — I’ll start by saying that. In Sister Location, he’s very clearly a purple and white bear and not a pink one, but it’s extremely clear that that’s who they’re meaning to be the bear in the story — especially with Into the Pit’s game version properly confirming it in the mini-game based on this take — so, yeah, no idea what’s going on with that, exactly… Maybe I just have a different idea of what qualifies as pink. At best, I could see arguing he’s a particularly vibrant shade of mauve, but even then —
…Ah well, it doesn’t matter.
I think it goes without saying that, unless it comes up again in a story that sheds doubt on this, Millie probably isn’t a real person in the FNAF universe, or at least didn’t have all of these things happen to her or die, but that’s pretty much something we can say about nearly every person in the Fazbear Frights books.
That being said, the way that Millie died is quite similar to how one very important character — namely, Elizabeth — does die in the mainline canon, so at least that much isn’t a lie; it’s just that it didn’t happen exactly the same way as it did to Millie, nor did it ever happen to Millie herself, as far as we know (if Millicent Fitzsimmons even exists, which is doubtful).
The Truths and the Likely-Truths
The things I KNOW are True
So, now that we’ve moved past the lies and have gotten to talking about the truth, what are the things that I’m 100% confident Count the Ways is trying to tell us about the FNAF mainline canon lore?
Honestly? Not a lot. Whereas in most of the previous and soon-to-be-upcoming stories, there was a pretty long list of things I felt would be certainly or almost certainly relevant to the canon, in this one I actually think the two main points being discussed here are not only very simple, but also explored in very simple and obvious ways.
As I mentioned in the previous section, Millie’s death while being trapped in Funtime Freddy’s stomach is very clearly a parallel of Elizabeth and her death in Circus Baby, so I don’t think it requires a ton of proof or a long discussion of any kind before I can state that the story quite simply exists, first and foremost, to show off what the main two children-snatching, artificially intelligent Funtime Animatronics can do, and give us an example of some of the way Elizabeth could’ve died and why no one around Baby was likely to hear her over the general noise of the restaurant and customers.
Here is list some of the major possible function we learned Funtime Freddy (and possibly, by extension, Circus Baby) possess:
A just about soundproof design to prevent their captives from truly making enough noise to be noticed by those who might otherwise be able to find them.
The ability to keep children inside of them long enough for them to die of dehydration, or even provide them with water so that they could potentially die a longer death starvation, instead. Which stems from the fact that…
They can flood their belly chambers with water, allowing them to possibly drown their victims, or at least boil them alive by heating their internal temperature exponentially.
The ability to freeze their victims is also evidently within their capacity, as is the ability to electrocute them by sending bolts of electricity through their body cavity.
The power to send blades and metal rods through their stomach cavity in order to impale, decapitate, or bisect their captives quickly, making for a faster and more efficient kill.
I think, to that end, the story also exists to show off the fact that those animatronics are clearly programmed with their primary objective being to kill or to help each other kill, and that that is why most of their personalities in particular tend to feel so…either sadistic or utterly disarming at times in their dialogue of the games. They were made to be children snatching and killing machines.
And then, obviously, you have the return to the on-going theme of the Power of Wills and Wishes™️, this time presenting itself in Millie constantly saying and writing and thinking that she wishes for death, and her ‘coincidental’ encounter with Funtime Freddy then having him comment on and decide to grant her that (even though she realizes, just like Oswald and Sarah before her, that she should have been careful about what she wished for, as getting it didn’t ultimately turn out to be what she thought it would be at all).
The things I FEEL are True
Well, if that’s all I can state with absolutely certainty, are there at least some more, less objectively obvious things that I’m fairly confident in?
Not a great many, I’m afraid.
Even as I’m writing up this last section, I’m listening to the book yet a fourth time, analyzing every line as though I’m trying to crack some sort of hidden code and still coming up empty on the smoking gun that I’m seeking.
There are definitely things that I feel strongly are intentional — messages that I think are wanting to be conveyed — but not in the same way as I have with every story before this, and quite a few that I’ve read which come after it.
For example, I can see and I feel quite certain that there’s some manner of attempt to bring to the reader’s mind the story of Pizzeria Simulator, considering not only that Funtime Freddy was found by Millie’s grandfather in a Salvage yard in this story and there’s a lot of talk of her grandpa liking collect junk and putter around in his workshop salvaging and repairing things, but also that in the former book, To Be Beautiful, the obvious stand-in for Circus/Scrap Baby was found in a scrapyard and had to be ‘salvaged’ by Sarah; however, I’m not sure why this is the case.
It’s definitely there, but I still don’t know what relevance it actually has, in terms of telling us something about Pizzeria Simulator; the only theory I’ve yet been able to come up with is, admittedly, a bit too seemingly contradictory to what’s implied in canon for even me to fully believe, and that’s that, like Millie, Michael’s apparent willingness to die and/or casual acceptance towards the idea of doing so — as we’ve seen in the Security Logbook and had implied in Pizzeria Simulator — wasn’t actually a serious wish he had, and, despite having apparently in some way also given Henry the impression that he wanted it, he truly ended up regretting it once it was much too late, and the opportunity to die had been granted to him by said man.
While it’s not impossible that this is the reality, I’ve never been particularly convinced of the “Henry killed Michael against Michael’s will, wrongly assuming he wants death as much as Henry did” narrative, as I feel that it makes more sense for Michael’s character if he does genuinely not want to live in a world in which his entire family is gone — especially given the fact that he’s saddled with so much clear guilt for what happened to Garret at his own hands, and the domino effect of countless deaths that occurred thereafter.
Nevertheless, I do think it’s an interesting idea to note and contemplate, so I will put it out there.
As for whether or not I think Millie is meant to be a stand-in for Michael beyond that — despite what you’re probably expecting me to say by now, after two articles of insisting that this entire Fazbear Frights volume is trying to get across some sort of message about him — not…precisely.
The thing about Millie, as opposed to Oswald and Sarah in the two stories prior, is that while she does share some similarities with Michael that I think are at least partly intentional, and she also is clearly taking the place of Elizabeth in terms of how she dies, she’s also still distinct enough in both personality and plight that I don’t think she’s particularly meant to be anyone we already know in particular — just a unique character through which to convey various small tidbits of information about different people and events.
Believe me, I’ve sat here comparing her to every important character in the main canon for much longer than I’d care to admit, trying to see if there’s something or someone I could be overlooking that her individual circumstances could be solely relevant to, but at least at the time of writing this, I just haven’t found enough evidence to come firmly to such a conclusion.
I jotted down in the early notes for this article how it seems that the story of Millie and Hannah is a direct parallel to Abby and Sarah, respectively, just told from the opposite perspective, and I’ve asked myself in doing so (as per my previous article’s conclusions) whether or not this means that Millie is meant to be a stand-in for Elizabeth beyond just the circumstances of her death, but there is just absolutely nothing else that they have in common, so that idea had to be promptly abandoned.
At least if we said she’s Michael, there are some things that could be used to support that claim:
Her last name, Fitzsimmons, is phonetically reminiscent of one of Michael’s chosen aliases later in life: Fritz Smith.
She is called “Dracula’s Daughter” by many people in her school after being obsessed with the book, Dracula, and in Sister Location, Michael is obsessed with a soap opera style TV show called The Immortal and the Restless, which is about a vampire named Vlad — who is clearly meant to be a metaphor for Michael’s father, William. This technically makes Michael “Dracula’s Son”.
Funtime Freddy refers to Millie as an “ice cold goth”, and in general, throughout the book, she is shown and described to be an angsty teen who is distant with her family, which, minus the goth part as far as we know, does seem to be at least decently accurate to Michael’s character pre-Bite of ‘83.
Nevertheless, I’m not particularly convinced that this is exactly the case, either; certainly, I do think that Millie is supposed to have some traits that may harken back to the vague concept of Michael, so that readers might continue to keep him in mind, but I don’t think that she is Michael.
She does share Michael’s desire for death — whether or not Michael himself later felt regret at the end of his life, as speculated earlier as a possibility — and she also ultimately has that same secondary overarching theme of main characters feeling unlovable, unwanted, utterly invisible in any possible positive context, and like life is meaningless in its current state, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re one and the same. There just isn’t enough overwhelming proof or connection for me to personally come to that conclusion.
I know — that might come as a shock to people who have read my previous articles, with how strongly I’ve been asserting that I believe this entire volume of Fazbear Frights is trying to tell us something about Michael, but it’s true; while I do still think the story is trying to tell us something about him and about the nature of the Funtime animatronics, I don’t think that Millie is particularly meant to be any one character from canon. I think she shares things in common with at least two of them and is supposed to remind us of them for different reasons each, but other than that, she is very much and very clearly her own character with her own unique traits.
Michael doesn’t have a canonically mentioned equivalent to Dylan. Michael’s parents aren’t flighty, impractical people who squander their money and jump from project to project, and country to country. Michael’s grandfather — or anyone that we know he knew, for that matter — wasn’t canonically stated to have been a retired teacher of some form. Michael wasn’t known to be goth. There are certainly things we could read into certain details like these and more, if we really wanted to reach for things, but without any solid amount of undeniable proof, it’s all just rampant speculation.
No, it’s far easier to just say that Millie is her own character created for the purpose of the Fazbear Frights story, who borrows traits and elements of her life story from others who actually existed in the in-universe real FNAF world.
As for other things that I think are worth mentioning, I can really only think of the fact Funtime Freddy is described as pink in this story; I’m not sure what significance this actually has, but my immediate thought process was that he was described this way so as to bring to mind Funtime Foxy, since every other Sister Location animatronic had been represented in some way in this book already (Ballora and Baby through Eleanor, and Funtime Freddy through himself). I don’t know if this is true, and I don’t even know if it matters, but it is something I wanted to throw out there. That or…it was a mistake in the writing, or the author just defines colors differently than I do. Who knows?
Whatever the case, I could be missing something here, but I think that’s pretty much everything I wanted to talk about with this book. I hope you enjoyed, and I’ll see you all in the next one!

Did you see that the Turkish model Richard spent a night with(?) on the 2023 tour has now teamed with Shelby? I’m shocked! Shelby shared the models posts in her story and she has some kind of countdown in her story highlights with the picture of the justice libra. What the hell? I have to say I'm a little scared right now. Especially since she wrote in the summer how sweet and nice Richard was. I hope there won't be any new lies and reports in a few days and I really hope Richard is ok right now.
Hello 🖐🏼
Ok, this will be a bit long since I have my own thoughts on this.
1. I saw Shelby sharing Seray's story. That's all. I have seen no signs on how they two should have teamed up. Shelby apparently shares stuff in her story all the time, I wouldn't give anything on her posting things in her story - we all know this woman kind of has her own problems.
2. The picture with the countdown Seray posted was her with her best friend, who accompanied her to the concert last year. Both Seray and her friend still have story highlights and/or posts about the Rammstein concert they attended on their accounts to this day - especially Seray's posts are full of praise for Richard, who seems to have treated her very kindly. So she hasn't deleted anything about this encounter with him plus the turkish tabloids were full of this at the time. It's well documented how she praised him and how happy she was - to claim the opposite now is hardly possible.
3. Seray seemingly is a very intelligent and perfecionist woman, who comes from a career focused family. She graduated from Beykent University Faculty of Law as a high honor student, worked in several law firms and is now currently studying at Leiden university (a very prestigious university) in Amsterdam for her Master's Degree in European Union Law and International Trade Law (source). This woman has big plans in her life and as a attorney/legal practitioner she's very well informed about the do's and don'ts regarding law and justice.
Now my question: Do you really think a woman like that would want to tarnish her reputation by meddling with someone like Shelby? I clearly don't.
4. The justice libra in her story: From my point of view, this can have something to do with her studies maybe? I have no idea, but that would be one explanation.
5. Seray and Richard met in July 2023. That was the height of the scandal and THE opportunity to drag another band member through the mud. Seray was very open about the meeting and as mentioned VERY positive. Now it's January 2024, the scandal has died down, and as mentioned, Seray still has all the posts on her IG page - why should anything else come now? Makes no sense to me at all.
Last but not least - the comments I see floating around about Seray are seriously not it. People badmouth her on the basis of nothing, insinuate that she is lying, reduce her to her appearance without informing themselves about her. In addition, Richard's apparent behavior towards her (he gave her flowers and his sweater as well as signed records) is also portrayed as a lie, eventhough it really is something so nice, which puts Richard in a really good light. Be it resentment, be it envy…sometimes I don't understand people. Maybe those two spent the night together, good for them, it's none of our business?
Just because Seray's IG story was shared doesn't mean anything. I know that as soon as Shelby does something, people break out in a sweat, and maybe I'm totally wrong, but to me it seems unlikely that anything else will happen. I hope I'm right.

Role of Moral Education in Life Development
Moral education helps a child grow, nurture values, and attain success in life. The best pre nursery schools in Gurgaon, in addition to giving them knowledge, try to mold children into responsible, empathetic citizens. Especially in a competitive academic environment, moral education builds character and equips students with expertise to make sound decisions. Through interaction with diverse peers, groups and situations, a robust moral framework grows compassionate individuals into responsible members of society.
Let's see how deeply moral education influences students and their journey in school.
Instilling Ethical Values for Lifelong Integrity
It is important for children to distinguish between good and evil. Mentors teach children to live ethically through lessons about honesty, fairness, and accountability. Such lessons arm students with a moral compass to make choices guided by values rather than self-interest.
For example, when a student is tempted to cheat on his examination due to peer pressure, it is the understanding of integrity that helps him make the right decision. The best CBSE schools in Gurgaon infuse these teachings in and through their curriculum and extracurricular activities, making it stick with children throughout the rest of their lives.
Building Empathy and Emotional Intelligence
Empathy is the bedrock for meaningful relationships and social cohesion. Schools help develop this crucial quality through teaching children to appreciate other people's points of view. Through collaborative projects, discussion of social justice issues, and examination of stories from other cultures, students learn to walk in other people's shoes.
Teachers use group activities in classrooms to teach students the value of listening and understanding. Such experiences create empathetic people who appreciate kindness and inclusivity. Students who grow up appreciating the struggles and successes of other people make positive contributions to their communities. The best school in gurgaon for nursery ensures that such an empathetic approach starts early and develops emotional intelligence from foundational years.
Building Responsible Citizenship
Strong civic responsibility begins in the classroom. The teachers encourage students to understand the roles they play as contributing individuals of society. Schools include activities like community service, debates over current events, and environmental conservation projects as a way of instilling a sense of duty to society.
By taking part in activities such as planting trees or aiding needy people in society, children tend to interact with the world beyond their entity. This process brings in the urge of responsibility and satisfaction over such acts, helping them become responsible citizens with better habits and morals from early life days.
Learning Skills in Managing Conflict and Decision-Making
Conflicts are an inevitable part of life, but character is determined by how people deal with them. Schools educate students on how to manage disputes in constructive ways by focusing on good communication, negotiation, and collaboration. In this regard, students learn to solve conflicts without resorting to aggression or withdrawal.
For instance, role-playing exercises are given to the children for practicing real-life situations that demand conflict resolution skills from them. The teachers assist them in finding win-win solutions so that they develop a cooperative mentality. These skills prove to be extremely useful, equipping students to face personal and professional challenges with maturity and confidence.
Promoting Resilience and Mental Well-being
Resilience is the quality needed to overcome any challenge in an often stressful world. Schools teach children that they need to carry on when things go wrong. This can be done by developing healthy attitudes and problem-solving skills. Moral education instills values that make students understand why they need to bounce back and view failures as an opportunity for growth.
Schools that prioritise mental well-being create an environment where students feel safe discussing their struggles. Activities like mindfulness sessions and open discussions about emotions equip students with assistance they need to manage stress effectively. By fostering resilience, schools ensure students develop the inner strength needed to tackle life’s adversities head-on.
Creating Inclusive and Respectful Environments
Schools are mini-societies, and so, the country would be created from inclusiveness-based schools. Teachers ensure that appreciation for diversity in culture, religion, and opinions is taught to the learners at schools.
In that regard, the schools develop an environment of respect whereby everyone is accommodated; this reduces bullying and discrimination. It builds a culture of understanding and support. The inclusive environment developed in the schools molds compassionate leaders who respect and embrace diversity.
Key Takeaway
Moral education constitutes an indispensable element of a child's upbringing. It not only imbues a student with such moral values, but also makes one a tolerant, resilient, and responsible being. St. Xavier's High School, one of the top 10 best schools in Gurgaon Sector 81, is known for its holistic approach to education. We are a shining example of how schools can transcend academics and create well-rounded individuals. Our moral education ensures that students become compassionate and principled citizens, ready to face the world with integrity and courage. If you are looking for pre nursery admission in Gurgaon, we can guide you through the best roadmap

YES!!! THANK YOU!!!
I so want to bring up that point about Plutarch and when he gets mentioned in regards to Sejanus because that drives me nuts when I see people (and I have heard people actually mention this point), that “Plutarch is an example of what Sejanus should have been” and I’m like “NO.”
Saying for Sejanus to “play the long game” and to “keep his mouth shut” is asking for him to essentially stomach going along with the games, staying silent, working in a society with slaves, and watching children get murdered every year. Asking him to “wait it out until he has enough power/using his wealth within that system” is asking him to not just stomach the Capitol’s cruelty, but actively participate within it. He doesn’t just make choices out of pure emotion, but from a sense of right and wrong. He is someone completely guided by his morals. “He always wants to do the right thing” is such a huge, important aspect to his character (that point LITERALLY stated in the book).
I’ve mentioned this before, but it would be the most ridiculous story ever and so unrealistic if every single character is just this person who plays mental chess and makes all these calculating, manipulative moves to get their way or reach something, which Sejanus isn’t. He is NOT calculating, not manipulative, not conniving. He is NOT a Coriolanus, not a Coin, not a Plutarch. I definitely feel that not enough people attempt to look at the events of the book through his POV and get way to clouded by Coryo’s POV on how he sees him (not to mention, skimming over how young and vulnerable he is….18 AND su*cidal mind you….this poor boy almost killed himself after the death of Marcus and felt so much guilt and grieved deeply over what happened to him). Like, yes, staying quiet would be more “strategic” but there is absolutely NO WAY that Sejanus would just be silent about all the injustice happening right in front of him and his whole character being someone who’s treatment by a society that views him and his family as inferior because of their District origins deepened his compassion and concern for justice.
He refused to play the Capitol’s game in turning him into something he’s not and always tried to keep his morals in tact as much as possible. He maintained his own humanity, his kindness, his compassion, his goodness in humanity, his convictions all the way thick and through and never lost his moral compass. He never lost himself and stayed true to who he always was. He was one of the bright lights in a cruel world. Sejanus is a reminder that keeping your head down and turning a blind eye may seem like the easier/safer path and easier said than done, but when sacrificing your morals for the sake of silence, you lose yourself. In addition, he also serves to show that for every cruel person out there who does terrible things and show the darkest sides of humanity (i.e., Coriolanus, Gaul, etc.), there is a beacon of hope and shows the good sides of humanity (SEJANUS…as well as other characters in the series such as Tigris, Katniss, Peeta, etc.)
No need to apologize for defending him because I will absolutely defend this man to my core, especially when I see terrible takes.
In defense of Sejanus Plinth part 2 cause I’m still seeing TERRIBLE takes.
I am convinced (and this is my OPINION but I will try to back it up with relevant info from the books) that Sejanus could not have “done a lot of good” if he stayed in the Capitol and used his “privilege” to end the games like Plutarch did.
Reason one: Our wonderful president of Panem is literally famous for poisoning people. The games are Coriolanus Snow’s claim to fame, his means of control. He NEEDS the games. If Sejanus stayed in the Capitol and gave one INKLING that he was going to threaten the Games’ sanctity Coriolanus. Would. Poison. Him. Like literally immediately.
Reason two: Yes the Plinths have money. Spoiler, so do most in the Capitol. Many of Coriolanus’s classmates are equal in wealth to Sejanus’s family (aka the Heavensbees, Cranes, and Creeds). The only reason Coriolanus hates specifically the Plinths for their wealth is because they are DISTRICT. In Coriolanus’s eyes they do not DESERVE their wealth because of where they came from. Yeah, Sejanus never starved like Coriolanus did. He was not really that privileged though. In the books, he lived in an apartment that was NOT ON THE CORSO that looked unimpressive from the outside, suggesting that the Plinths would never have the real status of a born Capitol citizen. Sejanus and the rest of the Plinths were and always will be outcasted because of their origin. That doesn’t sound like privilege to me. Doesn’t sound like something he could use for a lot of good.
Number three (the most important) reason: That is not the POINT of his character. Sejanus is kind and he speaks his mind and he cannot look past atrocity. Plutarch did a lot of good, yes, but he did some TERRIBLE shit to get to that end. Sejanus COULDN’T do that. He would not have the heart. He was too good for a world like Panem, the point is that his kindness cannot exist in a world like that, it will be snuffed out.
Anyway, sorry for the rant but like… yes, morally grey characters like Plutarch are cool and interesting to read about. But I feel like there’s this obsession with conniving characters and they’re starting to be seen as the only GOOD characters because people love to insert their own beliefs or methods onto literature. Sejanus is a wholeheartedly good person and not under any circumstance morally grey. If that makes him boring, fine. But like, don’t say “oh he should have done (insert thing so incredibly out of character it’s insane) instead!” when it makes no sense and completely disregards the point of his character.
#the hunger games#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#sejanus plinth#character analysis#YES THANK YOU#sejanus plinth defense squad#you speak my mind 👏🏻👏🏻#I will always defend this man to my core 🙅🏻♀️🙅🏻♀️

Hello! I’ve recently discovered your account and you are definitely one of my favorite writers for the op fandom, and possibly in terms of general fanfiction as well. I’m a BIG fan of fictional language exploration, so you having written several works on the topic was a big treat for me :) BUT I also love the way you write the characters, so I was curious: do you have any thoughts on Rosinante and Sengoku’s relationship? I’ve been kind of thinking lately that Sengoku might have a sort of idealised view of him - saying that your son, a literal spy, has never lied to you is a pretty bold claim, all in all, especially considering how (outwardly, at least) Rosinante didn’t seem to lose much sleep above going with the high treason option. In any case, thank you for writing such great stories, and hope you have a nice day :)
Thank you, that's such a nice thing to say! I'm glad you've enjoyed what I've written so far!
Sengoku and Rosinante's relationship is absolutely fascinating to me. And I think in Sengoku's case he's got a very specific set of blinders in regards to Rosinante, but in a very aware sort of way.
Sengoku claims that Rosinante never lied to him except the once, and I doubt that's true just on principal. I think a better reading of the sentiment is that Rosinante only lied one time when it mattered.
He also claims that Rosinante had one of the strongest senses of justice of anyone he knew, and in the context of how the series and the marines in particular define the concept of 'justice,' that feels like a very particular word choice.
Sengoku's brand of justice is "Reigning Justice" which I've always interpreted to mean that justice should take precedent, or "reign," over all. However, it does not define what that justice is supposed to be, or if there's only one interpretation of it like Absolute Justice does. So I think when he said Rosinante had a sense of justice, he means that he had a very good idea of the rights and wrongs of the world and where the lines of society fall. Him telling that to Law in Dressrosa feels very much like him saying "he saw that the world had been unjust to you, and decided to try and mitigate that, if even a little bit."
For Sengoku, I think there's a very parental desire there to want to believe you were an unshakable guiding force in the mind of your child, and Rosinante going rogue requires him to question that. But because Rosinante dies, he's never going to have those questions truly answered. He can just speculate, and try and look for the same things his son saw, whether that be in the world or in a hurt kid.
(I also think that losing Rosinante embittered him a lot, leading to the sterner outlook we see pre-timeskip--he's much more laid back in flashback and post-timeskip, and unfortunately I think some of that might have contributed to him being overly callous on the matter of Ace).

Chapter 14 - A Different Point of View
Summary: Things that happened that you weren't aware of.
Word count: 9,163 words
A/N: Thank you for being so patient with me. I struggled with this chapter due to its nature. I had to further dive into Bruce and Dick's character that I wasn't too familiar with.2020 was a very tough year for me. I lost lots, learned lots. And I thought that the quarantine would mean I would write more. But I was wrong. Life hit me hard, and I stopped doing a lot of things I used to enjoy.Despite being virtually absent last year, you guys stuck by me anyway. Thank you. I love you all for that.Special thanks to my two beta readers. You know who you are. Here it goes.
(i recommend you guys read previous chapters to refresh coz I had to lol)
Ao3
Masterlist
The roles that people played were false- a mere necessity for their career or survival. Everyone was playing a role, whether it was of their own accord or not.
Bruce Wayne was a role- superficial, fake, yet vital to Gotham. Batman, on the other hand, was a completely different role, born out of exigence and a sense of justice.
Dick Grayson, however, genuinely enjoyed playing his role.
Nightwing felt right to him. Being a police officer felt right to him. And especially, if not ultimately, being an older brother.
He listened to the dial tone of his phone, which rung for a few seconds before you finally picked up.
“Hey,” Dick heard your voice, the usual chirp absent that day.
Dick frowned to himself. Bruce was right about you being troubled after all.
“Hey, sis!” he forced the concern out of his voice. “You busy?”
“Nah, I’m just going over some old case files. What’s up?”
Dick leaned back into his sofa. Aside from the traffic blaring outside, the silence in his apartment made it easier for him to concentrate on analysing your speech patterns.
“Can’t I call just to ask how you’re doing?” he teased, easing into the conversation.
Everyone had always told him how he was natural at talking.
“You already called last week…”
Dick smiled to himself. He could already picture your narrowed eyes regarding him with suspicion.
It was good that you were always on your feet, but it was becoming borderline unhealthy. It reminded him of Jason and how he was always so guarded .
He pushed the memory away.
“I can’t call you again?” he rolled his eyes at no one.
“Bruce put you up to this,” you accused.
That’s because he’s worried about you, kid.
If only you knew how much Bruce had changed for you. Dick was glad that you were being loved by Bruce, yet he still couldn't help but feel slightly bitter that he never got that kind of treatment from his father- not the same treatment he gave you.
But he would rather die than admit his selfish thoughts to anyone.
“Yeah,” he conceded, “He was worried about you after last night.”
“I’m fine, Dick,” you insisted.
How many times has he heard those very same words from Jason?
“Well, if you’re not, then you can talk to me,” he offered.
A short pause.
Your response would be what differentiated you from his late brother.
“Actually, yeah,” you admitted.
There it was. No matter how stupid he knew it was for even comparing the two of you, he found that he always had to remind himself not to.
“How did you deal with it? Did it affect you?”
Dick told you his own experience with gore and dead bodies, how he overcame it, how he coped. There was silence after, and he just somehow knew what you were going to ask next.
“How did, uh, he deal with it?”
Your voice came in a whisper, hesitation evidently clear.
Dick was expecting it, but his heart still sank. He knew how everyone acted when Jason was brought up in conversation- he was guilty of reacting as well. He also knew how you were smart enough to avoid that topic.
It had been years. They should all have moved on, because Dick knew that they were also hurting you.
“He came to me as well.” Dick recalled Jason’s hesitant voice over the phone, never directly saying what was wrong, just rambling about things other than what was really going on in his head.
“Then he gradually called less and less when he learned how to deal with it himself.”
The day Dick noticed it, he was happy for Jason, but a small part of him was saddened that his little brother no longer needed him.
“I’ll have to look for that cognitive therapy, then. Thank you for calling, Dick. Talking to you helped.”
Did it really? He noticed your voice had changed again. Maybe he shouldn’t have gone on about Jason like that.
“No problem, kid. Call me if you need to talk, okay?”
The familiar beep left him isolated with his thoughts, wondering if you would trail in Jason's footsteps.
When will the day come when you eventually stop calling altogether?
***
He felt indebted to his city- the city he loved. The city he hated. The city that robbed him of his childhood.
He felt indebted to his family- the family he would give up everything for, the family he couldn’t stop hurting.
And he was sorry. God, he was sorry.
Sorry for everything he’s said and done- or didn’t do. But he still couldn’t stop. Because he didn’t know how.
Yet, no matter how much he claimed to love his family, the problem with Bruce Wayne was that he always expected them to be the people he wanted them to be.
Never like himself, though. No, he would never want them to turn out like him.
“That’s an order. Stay-”
The silence that followed the click in his ear represented the first time you had ever disobeyed a direct order.
It was a little late on your side. Dick and Jason had begun to disobey him within their first six months in uniform. But you had always been obedient- which made it easier for Bruce to trust you in the field.
This first time came as an unexpected and unwelcome surprise. And Bruce was…
Disappointed.
He grit his teeth when he saw you on the ground with the warehouse burning behind you. If he had just been a few seconds late, would you be in the fire, too?
“I almost had him.”
Bruce didn’t miss the wince of pain as you got up to your feet.
He had heard those exact words before countless times from J- no.
Bruce shoved that thought away.
“He would have gotten away, and we wouldn’t have known who it was that did this,” you argued, brows drawn together in a frown, mouth downturned. Your respiratory rate was high, and you were having trouble breathing.
When did you grow so tall? So confident?
Bruce silently pointed to the active security camera he noticed the minute he arrived and saw your expression fall- only for a second.
“I still think I made the right decision,” you insisted.
“You disobeyed a direct order.” He hated his own voice. The way he spoke sounded too militant.
“I acted how I saw fit,” you continued, “You always say to follow my instincts-”
“Not if your instincts contradict my orders.” He regretted his words the moment they left his mouth. He thought he had changed. But no, Bruce was still a dictator.
“Wow. Just- wow.”
He could see the little twitches of annoyance within the disbelief on your face. He understood it completely.
You were walking away, clutching onto your side and weakly limping to your bike, adamant on not seeking his help.
He hated seeing you injured, in pain. It was his fault. If only he was faster, he could have stopped Red Hood from beating you up. If only he predicted it sooner, if only-
“I’ll be heading back now.”
He missed what you had said before that.
“Robin,” Bruce forced out, “Have Alfred check your injuries.”
He should have been there.
When you drove away, he lingered at the crime scene.
Bruce flipped a switch in his helmet, and his lense changed. Non-organic material lighted up bright white. He noticed a fractured piece of shrapnel lying on the ground, less than a centimeter long.
He picked it up and placed it into a test tube from his belt. Switching his view to normal, he saw that it was red, maybe made from fiberglass. He could only deduce that it was a piece of Red Hood’s helmet.
Despite Bruce’s frustrations at you for disobeying him, he felt a swell of pride. You probably landed a hit hard enough to crack the helmet just a little bit that you yourself probably didn’t even realise it.
He shone a UV light on it. A small portion of it glowed.
Bruce had always been numb when he played investigator so that he would remain impartial and objective. That was true justice.
But when he pocketed the evidence and sped to the Batmobile, he felt something he had never felt before.
Against all logic and rationality, he found himself dreading to uncover who the blood belonged to.
***
Bruce never drank his sorrows away. It was dangerous, too easy to develop an addiction to. He could have easily drowned in alcohol at any given chance, like when he thought of his parents, or when he thought-no, knew- he wasn’t enough.
But no, he only restricted his drinking for leisurely activities. He was disciplined. It was the reason why he was who he was.
However, in that moment, staring at the results of the DNA analysis after hours of anxious waiting, he wished he allowed himself a drink.
Not because he was distraught, not because he was in grief- but because he just didn’t know what to feel.
It wasn’t numbness. It was just plain confusion, an internal tornado of emotions whirling inside him all at once.
Footsteps.
He tapped on a button once, immediately closing the window of the test results displayed on the screen.
Composing himself, he clicked on another pending case to pretend he wasn’t on the verge of a breakdown. It’s just another role.
“Master Bruce.”
Why was he still up at this hour?
“Yes, Alfred,” he turned to meet the butler’s tired eyes- just as tired as his own.
Tired because of him.
Alfred was always up because of him. Because Bruce was a disease, constantly burdening others, dragging them down, keeping them up at night.
“I made some sandwiches. They’re light. Please do eat them,” he set the tray on the cluttered desk, simply pushing aside the numerous stacks of papers.
“Go to bed, Alfred,” he told him. Alfred was too old to be up at this hour. And whose fault is that?
“In due time,” he responded calmly, “What of the blood results, if I may ask?”
“Inconclusive,” Bruce lied.
“I see.”
Suspicion shrouded Alfred’s voice.
“How are her injuries?” Bruce asked, the pain finally creeping in, seeping into his bones.
“I commend you for asking about your daughter’s injuries after only four whole hours of staring at the screen, Master Bruce. You would definitely win father of the year.”
“I was occupied,” he sighed, “Please.”
“Her injuries are only superficial,” Alfred said, “Surface contusions at most.”
He still hurt her.
“Thank you, Alfred. Now go to bed.”
“It was only a little more than two decades ago when I was telling you the same,” he grumbled away.
Bruce made sure Alfred was gone before pulling up the results on the screen again, the glaring ‘MATCH’ sign staring angrily back at him as if it were shouting at Bruce, yelling in rage.
And Bruce understood completely. He had failed Jason Todd. He had betrayed him. And now he was back, vengeful, and full of resentment.
But that didn’t matter to Bruce.
Because despite it all, his son was alive.
In the end, that was all that mattered.
***
What did my son do to my daughter?
Bruce watched in horror as you lay unconscious on the hospital bed, hooked to the IV bag. He couldn’t stop staring at the bruises littering your neck.
Bruises that were far too small and evenly shaped to be the effect of a mere throttling.
He knew how the people close to him viewed him. He knew they thought he was strong, unforgiving, cold, emotionless. Especially when they put him side by side with Clark.
But he forced himself to be those things, because if he didn’t, he would have broken down years ago.
He was used to it. The pain. The darkness.
But this time, he felt like he was being crushed.
He felt like he was hanging on by a thread- no. A delicate strand of thin, brittle hair.
“It’s okay, doctor,” you had said, “I know what you’re going to ask me. No, my genitalia does not hurt. He didn’t do anything to me.”
He felt a wave of relief crash over him.
Jason wasn’t that far gone, then.
But as Bruce looked at your neck again, he still couldn’t help but feel nausea crawling into his core.
He still touched her.
Jim left after his questioning, and you drifted to sleep. He went over to you and looked down at your face, taking everything in.
Since when did you look so mature? When did you get so beautiful?
He couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle. Even in sleep you had your eyebrows tugged down, as if you were angry that you had to go to bed. He didn’t know why he never saw that small part of you that shouted rebellion despite you almost always following his orders.
He realised that when he watched you sleep, you looked a bit like- no. Don’t ever compare the two.
He closed his eyes and pressed his lips to your forehead, trying to convey all of his feelings to you.
He was sorry. So god damned sorry for dragging you into this, for hurting you, for pulling you down to the depths with him.
Hoping you didn’t feel the teardrop that fell to your forehead, he quickly wiped it away before leaving for his press statement.
***
“Master Bruce, please!”
Another crash.
Alfred’s plea snapped him out of his blinding fury, his crushing pain.
He was standing at the hallway near the Manor entrance, glass and broken wood shattered at his feet, feeling the walls closing in and narrowing as Alfred looked at him in alarm.
“I-I’m sorry, Alfred. I-” he stammered, feeling like the small, helpless boy who watched his parents die before him.
He remembered the time when he was little, only a couple of months after the tragedy. He had done the exact same thing, taking out his anger and anguish by destroying things, triggered by something he had long forgotten about.
At that time, Alfred had held him closely in his arms as he stained the butler’s suit with his snot and tears. Again, a burden to the man who raised him.
This time, he refused the old man’s offer of comfort, walking past to descend to the cold darkness of the cave he was so familiar with.
Bruce didn’t usually drink his sorrows away, but this time, he did.
***
Dick wasn’t a good person. He was far from it.
Case in example, it was the first time he saw you after your kidnapping.
He meant to come sooner, he really did. But he was just so busy in Bludhaven, he couldn’t spare any time to rush over the moment he heard his sister was hurt. He tried to justify it in his head by thinking that you were probably handling it fine.
But he was just trying to make himself feel better.
What a great brother he was.
“So, why are you obsessing over violent crimes?” he asked, trying to keep his voice from breaking.
Desensitization was one thing when you worked in that field, but obsession was a whole other problem. And he didn’t want to see his sister walk down that path.
“A lunatic just kidnapped me a couple weeks ago, Dick, maybe this is my coping mechanism,” you huffed, giving him your signature eye roll.
A lot of things start with just a coping mechanism, kid.
Dick knew it about it all too well. The people he brought in on an almost daily basis, high as kites. The accident last week on the highway at three in the morning, two innocent lives taken because of a drunk man who had started drinking three years ago to cope with his mother’s loss.
The man downstairs in the cold cave, who was just a little boy when his parents died, now living with the trauma while going out night after night to beat up criminals, sleeping only three hours a day at most.
“I don’t want your pity, Dick,” you huffed, “I’m fine.”
Yeah, you were. And that was what worried Dick the most.
“I know you are,” he tried to smile, “Which is why I don’t think this is your coping mechanism.”
You talked to Dick about Red Hood, sharing your concerns about him. This is what made you, you. Opening up to him, offering your thoughts and feelings. It was something he never had with Bruce or Jason. The both of them were similar in that sense.
“He won’t tell me either,” Dick huffed, “It’s always been like that with him. No matter how hard I try to get closer to him, sometimes it feels like he’s getting further away.”
It was the same with Jason as well. Did everyone he cared about just end up running away from him?
“I can relate to that,” you sighed.
“But I have a feeling that he will tell you eventually,” Dick tried to comfort you, “It seems too important not to.”
Dick knew better. Bruce had always excluded information from him, whether it was important or not.
“And,” Dick hurriedly tried to change the subject, “I heard from Alfred that you’re not talking to Bruce. May I ask why?”
“So that’s why you’re here,” you eyed him suspiciously. . “I came to check up on you,” he stated, “I’m sorry I couldn’t come here right after, but my little sister did just get kidnapped.”
When are you going to stop putting your guard up around me, kid?
“I told you, I’m fine,” you insisted.
“Then you’re fine enough to tell me why you haven’t been talking to Bruce,” Dick pushed, “I won’t judge. I’ve had my fair share of cold shoulders and fights with him too. I know first hand how frustrating he can be. So come on, tell.”
He saw you hesitate for just a moment, before conceding.
“We fought,” you began, “It was when I got back from the hospital. He wouldn’t tell me who Red Hood was. And he- he called me ‘Jason’.”
Ah, fucking hell, Bruce.
“Jesus,” he whispered, “What did he say exactly?”
“‘Back down, Jason’,” your voice cracked.
Dick saw the way Bruce spiraled after Jason’s death, and he would never tell you this, but deep down he was against Bruce adopting you so soon after. He thought that Bruce was using you to fill up the hole he too felt with Jason’s absence.
You were so like him, yet so different. Still, Bruce must have been really distracted if he could slip as badly as he did.
Dick would ask later.
“Now that’s something I haven’t heard in years,” Dick chuckled humorlessly.
Jason arguing with Bruce about using excessive force. Jason sneaking out to go for patrols whenever he was grounded. Hell, even Jason stealing whiskey from the cabinet at the age of fifteen.
He could still remember it so clearly. Jason with his dark hair poking into his eyes that were full of fury, cheeks puffed up and red as he pouted angrily at Bruce for making him stay at the Manor on nights Bruce insisted on going alone.
Dick tried to shove the past away. He knew he was making you even sadder.
“Has Bruce made any attempts to reconcile?” Dick remembered the conversation he was having with you.
“Yeah, but I’m still mad at him,” you pouted.
“And you have every right to be,” Dick nodded, “But Bruce, well, you know Bruce. He keeps these things to himself, but obviously he’s still hurting.”
You have know idea how much he’s hurting, Little Wing.
You avoided Dick’s eyes, looking down at your fumbling thumbs as the room became silent.
“I’m seeing someone,” you changed the subject.
“You are?”
Interesting.
“Yeah,” you blushed, “It’s still very new, and we’re not official yet or anything. But we’re definitely testing the waters.”
“That’s great,” Dick grinned, “Who is he? Tell me the deets. Spill the tea.”
He sort of loved gossip. It wasn’t a secret.
“I met him in the library a while back,” you excitedly said, “We exchanged numbers. Started texting, meeting up from time to time. He’s really cute.”
Ah, young love. What Dick would give to be at that age again.
“I bet he is,” Dick teased.
“What’s with that face?” you laughed, “He is! He’s slightly older, and he’s got this sexy bad boy look, you know?”
“I thought you liked the nerdy types?” Dick responded. He saw a picture of you and your classmates on your Instagram. Typical prep school kids.
“I never had a type, you ass!” . “You’re right. I thought you were completely uninterested in boys,” he wondered out loud, “Is he nice, at least?”
“Yeah he is,” you smiled to yourself, “He didn’t know I was Wayne until 2 weeks ago. Before that, we were mainly texting. Now we’re meeting up more. I feel like I can be myself with him. I don’t know, there’s just something about him that makes me trust him.”
So you still have some of your walls up with me, but you trust a stranger? Who is this guy?
“I’m not going to tell him anything!” you quickly added, “I’m not stupid. I know I shouldn’t trust someone I just met. It’s not about the confidential stuff. It’s the little things like how I feel, and my problems, and just- stuff, you know?”
The thought didn’t even cross his mind. Dick trusted you enough with their secret, just as how Bruce did.
“I get it,” Dick tried to rationalise, “You don’t know what it is about the person, but you feel like the two of you just click, am I right?”
It had been like that with Barbara. It had been like that with Kory.
Now Dick was alone, and deep down he knew that they saw him as how he truly was. Selfish.
“Exactly,” you smiled, “Been with anyone like that before?”
“One or two,” he brushed it off, “People like that- whom you just click with- they’re hard to come by. You should see where this leads. Who knows, maybe he’s one of those that would stick around, huh?”
What he would give to have at least one person who would stick with him.
After he met with Gordon, Dick went to the cave to see Bruce who was, of course, facing the computers.
“I know what you’re going to say,” his father’s voice echoed without even turning to look at him.
“Then you know how much you’ve hurt her?” he crossed his arms.
Bruce did turn around to face him, and Dick suddenly felt a tightness in his chest.
He knew that Bruce hardly ever slept, but this was different. He looked disheveled, his complexion pale, his eyes more bloodshot and the dark circles even more prominent.
Alfred did say how badly Bruce took the kidnapping, finding him passed out on the cave floor with an empty bottle of scotch in his hand, but he thought that Bruce would have gotten himself together by now. It was surprising to see him that way, and Dick felt… Uncomfortable.
Something was wrong, and it wasn’t just the kidnapping, nor his fight with you.
“You found out something,” Dick narrowed his eyes, “Something important. What is it?”
He caught a flash of guilt in Bruce’s eyes. “I’ll tell you some other time.”
“Bruce,” Dick groaned, “This is why you keep on hurting her.”
Hurting us.
“I’m protecting everyone.”
“You can’t use that excuse with me anymore,” he sighed, “I don’t need your protection. So tell me.”
“No.”
That was his final word, and he knew that Bruce would never budge.
“Fine,” he let out a breath, “Did you know that she’s seeing someone?”
Bruce frowned.
Which made Dick frown. Since when did Bruce miss things? What the fuck was going on with him?
“Name?”
“Dunno. Didn’t ask. And no, don’t you dare,” Dick pointed an accusatory finger at him, “Do not do a background check on him. She deserves privacy. Hell, don’t even bring it up. You have no right to go poking into her relationships.”
Dick was being defensive, but that was because he was trying to convince himself as well, which was why he didn’t ask you for a name. He knew he wouldn’t be able to resist.
“I wasn’t going to,” Bruce reassured, “She… She deserves a life. A normal life. Not this- not-”
Dick knew then he had to leave, because Bruce’s voice breaking meant he was far from okay, and he knew that Bruce hated to show his vulnerability to anyone.
“Bruce,” Dick said, this time softly, “You’re not alone, you know. I’ve been with you since the beginning, and I’m still with you now.”
And with that, Bruce turned his back towards him again, silently going back to his goddamned computers.
“He’s been that way ever since the kidnapping,” Alfred informed him when he walked up to the manor.
“I don’t think it’s just the kidnapping, Alf,” he frowned at the butler, “There’s something more to it. Did he figure out who Red Hood is?”
“Perhaps,” Alfred pursed his lips, “But he refuses to tell me.”
“That means we know him personally,” Dick theorised, “Who the hell could it be that he’s so adamant on keeping it a secret?”
“I do not know Master Dick, but it can’t be anyone good if he’s got Master Bruce drinking during the day.”
***
Bruce knew that he was wrong to call you by his dead son’s name.
But his dead son was supposed to stay dead instead of haunting him with that glaring red bat across his chest, and having that thought in his head all the time, he slipped up.
He prided himself with his contingency plans and detective skills and preparations, but no amount of time could ever prepare him for when he found out his dead son had sexually assaulted his daughter.
You seemed to have dealt with it surprisingly well, exceeding his expectations. In fact, Bruce thought it was a bit odd that you weren’t as affected by it.
And then he saw it.
He saw what he thought was the internalized anger you felt finally bursting through the seams of your tightly lidded emotions.
And he wasn’t prepared for it.
Bruce didn’t think you had it in you, or else he would never have made you Robin.
But there you were on the ground, beating a man beyond recognition.
He couldn’t dread this moment because he never saw it coming. Not from you. Never from you.
He hurriedly ripped you off the man, flinging you away with force.
Pulse was present, but weak. Flail chest. It took him only a few seconds to observe the damage you did to the man’s face. It didn’t look good.
“Stay back,” he growled at you when you came close.
He couldn’t look at you. He didn’t want to.
“I-I didn’t mean to,” he heard you whisper.
“Call an ambulance,” he ordered.
There was no other choice. He had to take the fall for you.
“NOW!” he snarled at you again. In the background, you were on the phone, but Bruce’s thoughts were elsewhere, calculating what needs to be done.
You moved-
“Leave. I’ll deal with this.” You needed to go. You couldn’t be here when the ambulance and police arrived.
“Batman-”
“I said leave,” he snapped. He couldn’t even hear your voice.
He waited for the ambulance to come before leaving, making sure they saw him escape. Making sure he would be the one the media would attack.
And while he drove back to the Cave, he decided to give his son a call.
“Bruce?”
“Dick,” he sighed. He knew he had always been unfair to his eldest, giving him so much pressure to perform, pushing him to be his best- and ultimately away. He knew that he never showed it, but he was proud of Dick. He always had been from the very beginning.
“What’s wrong?”
It wasn’t a surprise that Dick picked up immediately that something was wrong. If it wasn’t for the fact that calling him out of the blue was what gave it away, Bruce himself trained Dick.
“She- she crossed the line tonight,” he tried to explain, “Jerome Miller. She attacked him. The damage she’s done to him is irreversible. I suspect he will be in a vegetative state for the rest of his life.”
“Jesus,” Dick breathed from over the line, “Why didn’t you stop her?”
“I wasn’t there,” he grit. He thought he could trust you.
But deep down Bruce knew that it was all his fault after all. Who was he to act so righteous when he was the reason your parents died?
“I don’t know if she’ll talk to me, Bruce,” Dick sighed, “Not about something like this. She’s probably beating herself up over this already.”
“As she should.”
“Bruce.”
“Please,” Bruce asked, “I’m worried. She isn’t herself and I can’t blame her for it, but the chances of her talking to you are much higher than if I were to try.”
“I’ll try,” Dick agreed.
“Report to me after.”
“Bruce, we’ve talked about this,” Dick grumbled, “I am under no obligation to report to you. I’m doing this for her. Not you.”
He was trying not to go back to the man he was before, but sometimes he couldn’t help it.
They’re your children, not your soldiers.
He had to remind himself time and time again. It was easier to be just a father to you as compared to Dick and Jason, yet even then he made slips.
“I know,” he apologised. “Thank you.”
Click.
And then Bruce was alone again.
***
Bruce watched you from the corner of his eye when you came back. He noticed that you had put more effort into dressing up when you left the house that day.
There was a slight bounce to your step and a small smile that played on your lips.
Dick was right after all. There was someone you were seeing.
But no, he couldn’t look into it. In fact, it would be hypocritical of him if he did. Dick had many girlfriends and flings, and Bruce didn’t want to know about any of them. Mainly because Dick was his first, and the thought of a boy he raised maturing and having relationships made him feel confused about parenthood.
Not that many of them lasted too long anyway.
Jason was a little different. While Dick had girls lining up after him all the time, Jason was much more subtle about the girls he liked, and that made Bruce more curious- but not enough to investigate.
He thought about when Barbara had caught Jason looking at her, making him turn red. He wondered if Jason would like you.
A tight squeeze in his chest.
He didn’t let his mind linger there.
Bruce felt obligated to protect you, which tempted him to investigate the boy you were seeing. It could be a trap, it could be someone using you for fame and money, or something even more sinister. Hell, it could be Jason himself after that stunt he pulled off.
But there was no evidence, and Bruce wanted to be a father to you this time instead of Batman the mentor. So Bruce would have to trust you on this one.
***
There was something holding Bruce back from telling everyone the truth about Jason.
And because he is who he is, Bruce knew what it was.
Guilt. He blamed himself for what had happened, and telling others about it meant owning up to his mistakes. Bruce never ran away from his fears and feelings despite what others might think. On the contrary, he held to them very strongly, using them as a motivation to fight head on.
This time, though, he felt more self destructive- the worst he had ever felt since he carried Jason’s corpse from the rubble- and so he tried to delay the inevitable.
But time was running out. He had enough time to wallow in self pity. It was time to pull himself together, and the first step began with Alfred.
The Cave was colder than usual that night, air thin and darker despite the illumination he had provided. Bruce was slumped in his usual wheeled chair, cowl resting on the desk after patrol, the weight of his suit almost crushing him in his weakened mental state.
“Alfred,” Bruce sighed, “Please, take a seat. I have something to tell you.”
“I assume this is about the identity of one criminal who has been terrorizing your daughter?” Alfred retorted, sitting down anyway.
“Yes,” Bruce nodded, “This… This won’t be easy, Alfred. I suggest you prepare for the worst.”
“And the worst being..?”
Bruce wheeled himself closer to the butler, leaning forward. “It’s Jason.”
Alfred merely blinked. “I’m sorry, sir, but I’m afraid my ears have caught up to my age. I must have misheard you, because for a moment, I thought you said that Red Hood is Jason.”
“You didn’t mishear me, Alfred. It’s him.”
Bruce saw the confusion in Alfred’s eyes, the frantic search for reason. “Our Jason? Jason Todd?”
“Yes, Alfred.”
And then, Bruce felt it. The pain he had been suffering with for weeks spreading to the man who raised him. Alfred clutched his chest with one hand, the other clenching tightly over the armrest of his chair, his breathing quickened.
“Impossible,” he whispered, “Jason died. How?”
“There was an event regarding The League and Superboy punching reality. I won’t get into details, but I suspect that was what caused the initial resurrection. The restoration, however. We know of someone who has been continuously restored time and time again.”
“Ra’s Al Ghul,” Alfred concluded, “But why? Why on Earth would he restore Jason?”
“I don’t know,” Bruce frowned, “But it is an almost perfect revenge plan. I would like to entertain the idea that he has brainwashed Jason into thinking we are the enemy, but I can’t put it past him to develop a hatred for me. I… betrayed him.”
“Master Bruce, this is not your fault,” Alfred rose to his feet, “If it is indeed Jason, we can still help. I have faith in the boy.”
“Me too, Alfred. Me too.”
Bruce didn’t miss the sob that echoed faintly through the cave when Alfred ascended back up.
***
As if in slow motion, he saw every change of emotion on Dick’s face. The way he blinked once in confusion, the surprise approaching as he widened his eyes, and then his eyebrows stitching together in a deep frown, his lips downturning and nose flaring in anger.
Bruce saw the punch coming, but he did not do anything to counter it. Gladly, he took the right hook Dick gave him, appreciating the sting that radiated from his cheekbone to his jaw.
“How long have you known?” his son shook in anger.
“Dick-”
“HOW LONG, BRUCE?!” Dick roared, fists clenched, voice echoing in the cave.
“Since the night he blew up the warehouse,” Bruce replied.
“Jesus, fuck,” Dick ran his fingers through his hair, “Jesus, Bruce. That was over a month ago.”
“I know.”
“We-” he choked on his words, “We deserved to know.”
“I know.”
“So why the fuck didn’t you say anything?!” he slammed his fists on the desk. Bruce caught a few drops of tears that fell to the ground.
“I’m sorry,” Bruce apologised, and meant it. But he just couldn’t bring himself to say anything more.
“You’re sorry?” Dick looked at him with eyes far too cold than he knew, “He was my brother, Bruce. He told me things he never told anyone else. We shared secrets and jokes. We went to the same diner once a week to catch up. He asked for my help and I asked for his. And then he died. Just like that, because you couldn’t keep him on a leash. And now he’s back, and you knew it was him, and you’re just sorry?”
Dick’s eyes were wet and red, and filled with contempt. Bruce couldn’t blame him. He hated himself, too.
“Does she know?” he whispered, “Does she know that the man who attacked her is your son, and is my brother?”
Like always, he pushed the pain away efficiently, logically, objectively.
“Yes,” he confirmed, “I told her this afternoon.”
“And she’s not angry?”
“If she was, she did not show it,” Bruce described, “In fact, she looked… Worried.”
“Of fucking course she would be worried,” he snarled, “She’s worried that she’s going to be irrelevant to you now the dead Robin is back.”
“She’s not,” Bruce growled at that, “She’s not his replacement. She never was.”
“Does she know that, Bruce?” Dick snickered, “Did you finally get over yourself and tell her that? Because the last fucking time I spoke to her, you called her Jason.”
Bruce didn’t know how to respond to that. He was good at smiling at the cameras and making speeches and charming an audience, but he was never good with words, real words that described his true feelings to the ones he cared for the most.
“I’m sorry,” he simply said, now numb to everything throughout years and years of practice. “I promise, I will bring him back. Will you help me?”
“What can I do that you can’t?” Dick scoffed.
“You knew him, Dick,” Bruce said, “You knew him in ways I never did. I can predict his movements, but to accurately guess what his motivations are- you knew him better than I did.”
“Fine,” Dick conceded, “But I’m not forgiving you for this, Bruce. I swear, you’re going to pay for all the secrets you’ve kept from us, be it by my hand or someone else’s.”
***
“Did you know that your daughter went out last night to see a boy while we were patrolling?” Dick brought up.
He was looking at Bruce’s back, as he always was.
Bruce was on the computers, going through hours upon hours of security footage and traffic cams for Red Hood- for Jason.
It was difficult for him to put the two together. Jason had always been his little brother. Young, naive, inexperienced. And now that same person was the leader of the underground.
It was definitely difficult.
“Alfred mentioned she went out, but I didn’t know it was to meet a boy,” Bruce replied without glancing his way.
“Well, she lied to me about it at first,” Dick sank in a chair, looking at his nails. “Got pretty defensive when I brought it up. Even tried to deflect by using Jason against me.”
Dick knew you meant to hurt him with your words, and it worked.
He was definitely surprised that you would stoop that low because he always saw you as a sweet, kind girl.
People change. That’s what happens when you stick with Batman.
But Dick didn’t expect you to change so fast.
“She… used Jason against you?”
Bruce finally turned towards him, the ever constant frown a little bit deeper that moment.
“Yeah,” Dick straightened, “It was the first time she’s ever spoken to me that way.”
“What did she say exactly?”
“That I was distracting myself by using humor as a coping mechanism, and that I should come to terms with the fact that it was my brother who kidnapped and sexually assaulted her,” he repeated bitterly.
“What did you say to her that she responded that way?” Bruce asked.
“I was just making fun of her boyfriend,” Dick shrugged, “Why? Do you think she’s hiding something?”
At first, Dick thought that you were genuinely angry at the both of them because you were right- Jason did kidnap you. Jason did do those things to you. And Jason was supposed to be under both Bruce and Dick’s responsibility.
Dick didn’t blame you for it, because he would have probably been angry if the situation was reversed.
It was one of the mistakes he always made as Robin when Bruce was teaching him how to accurately deduce by reading people. Never assume that someone’s motivations would be the same as your own.
“She hid that she has… someone from me. There must be a reason why.”
“Or she knows how you are and would rather not have your nose in her business, Bruce. She did find out about that tracker you put in her necklace. How did she even react to it?”
Bruce had done the same with both Dick and Jason while they were Robin, though it didn’t come disguised as a pretty, shiny piece of metal.
On the contrary, during Dick’s Robin days, Bruce had hid it behind his third molar while he was unconscious. He only found out after a year, when he was held hostage by a mercenary who wanted to use him to lure Batman. Said mercenary had detected the tracking device and pulled it out along with the tooth.
It made him increasingly more hostile towards Batman and his never ending need for control, but at least it saved him a trip to the dentist.
From what Dick knew, Jason died with his tracker on him.
Bruce had said that it was all done in the name of safety.
But would you tell Jason the same thing now?
“I apologised and never replaced the one Red Hood damaged. I thought that would have been sufficient for her to trust me again.”
Dick let out a bark of laughter at that, but it was void of any humor. “Only you would think that not replacing her damn tracker would make her trust you. No wonder she hasn’t told you anything.”
It was probably best not to mention that you were now also sexually active.
“Do you think she’s hiding something important?” Bruce asked.
“Are you actually asking for my opinion?” Dick smirked, “No, but it’s too soon to tell, anyway. Relax, Bruce. It’s like you forgot what it was like to be young and in love.”
That was obviously a joke. Bruce grew out of his childhood the moment he saw his parents getting killed in that alley.
As for being in love, did Bruce ever allow himself that?
***
“What did you say she called herself?” Nightwing asked softly.
The poor girl was scared out of her mind to the point where Dick found it difficult to extract important information from her ramblings.
Well, that’s what happens when someone makes you kill a person.
It was difficult, so difficult, to face the fact that it was Jason behind all of that.
“I t-think, V,” the witness- Elena- stuttered. “She with him. But try to stop him.”
Behind him, he felt Batman pause. He was walking around the club and analysing evidence while listening to the conversation.
“She tried to stop him? Him as in Red Hood?” Dick frowned.
“Yes,” Elena looked down and rubbed her arms.
“Correct me if I’m wrong, but,” Dick tried, “You told me they were partners.”
“Yes, but she try to stop him,” she repeated, “I don’t know.”
“It’s okay,” Dick offered a smile, “Thank you very much. You’ve been a huge help.”
“Am I going to prison?” she looked at him with big, wet eyes.
“We’ll make sure you won’t,” Dick assured, “You’ll get the best defense team in Gotham.”
“You can do that?” she asked, hope in her voice.
“It’s the least we could do,” Dick answered, a sad smile playing on his lips.
He’s our responsibility.
“Thank you,” she gave a watery laugh, “Even prison better than with him, I want to be free.”
Dick heard footsteps approaching. As he turned around, Gordon entered the crime scene, followed by his team.
“Of course you’re here first,” he sighed at Batman.
“Gordon.”
“You might have to speak to the police again, okay?” Dick told Elena who was suddenly nervous again by the presence of so many people. “I’ll make sure they know you’re innocent. Gordon is the only one you can trust, okay?”
She nodded, her gaze turning downwards.
“Gordon,” he approached the aging man. He was used to talking with Gordon in Batman’s stead, even when he was Robin, and remembered feeling proud of himself whenever he finished speaking to Gordon regarding cases without Batman having to add anything.
“Nightwing,” he blinked, “It’s been a while.”
“Desperate times calls for desperate backups,” he grinned, “Anyway, the girl. She’s a victim of Victor Ibenescu’s human trafficking trade. Romanian, only thirteen when she was kidnapped. She was forced to shoot Victor by Red Hood.”
“This Red Hood likes his poetic justice,” Gordon snickered.
“It’s still first degree murder, or at least, that’s how the law would make it seem,” Dick reminded him, “But I assure you she’s innocent. Red Hood threatened to kill and rape her if she didn’t shoot.”
That was a lie, on both his part and Elena’s. Judging by the way she averted her eyes and touched her own arm, Dick could tell that she wasn’t telling the whole truth about being threatened by Red Hood- but he also knew that he couldn’t expose her and get into more trouble.
He wanted to let out a tired sigh, but that would give him away in front of Gordon and the other officers. He still needed to maintain his air of hopefulness, and he couldn’t seem like he was troubled by his thoughts.
Time to meet Bruce back at the cave and watch the surveillance footage.
***
“He’s got a partner now,” Dick voiced out his findings, “Since when did Red Hood partner up?”
Bruce’s frown was deep as he stared at the screen.
Dick pursed his lips. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
“Whether this is Red Hood or Jason?” Bruce hummed, “This definitely does not seem like anything Red Hood would do. He’s always tried to separate himself from others because it furthers his authoritarian agenda. He does not get friendly with people because people are disposable to him.”
“So you think this is Jason, then?” Dick concluded, “Well, Jason never had much of a problem working with others in the past, and he made some friends. He wasn’t the type to be hostile to people.”
“He did have trust issues,” Bruce pointed out, “At the very beginning.”
“Yes, and he kept a lot of things to himself,” Dick agreed, “But he did have friends.”
“Special friends,” Bruce added, “Friends who gained his respect and trust. So the question is- who is this girl and how did she manage to gain his trust?”
“Hey, play it back again,” Dick said, “Those moves.”
Bruce played the security tape, showing the mysterious girl and Red Hood taking down Victor’s men.
“Arnis,” Bruce pointed out.
“It’s a little different.”
“She has incorporated silat in as well. Low stance,” Bruce observed. “She’s skilled, but not polished. It could be anyone.”
There was something familiar about the girl that Dick couldn’t pinpoint. Dick usually had strong intuition- a gut feeling that enabled him to know which facts to focus on during an investigation, or a strong ability to see through people.
But the problem was that it wasn’t solid proof or evidence, something Batman heavily focused on. It was a gut feeling that told him he knew who the girl was.
“Do you think it’s-” he broke off without completing his sentence. There was nothing to back his claims.
“She has no reason or motive to work with Jason,” Bruce shot the idea down, “He’s hurt her. And… She wouldn’t betray me like that.”
“She’s been keeping secrets, Bruce,” Dick reminded, hating the fact that this time it was him who was suspicious.
Oh, how the tables have turned.
Because he never would have thought that Jason was capable of torture and murder, either.
Why didn’t he come to me?
“As you clearly pointed out prior to this,” Bruce grit, “She has her reasons as to why she’s keeping secrets. And it is most probably because of me. All of you kept secrets. But this time, I’d like to let her keep hers.”
It was sweet, seeing Bruce that way.
“Is it guilt?” Dick asked.
“It’s repentance.”
Dick hated playing the bad guy.
Because he wasn’t supposed to be. He was the one people looked up to for inspiration, he was the light to Batman’s darkness, he was the smiles and charms and laughter.
He wasn’t the one who would accuse his little sister of fraternizing with the- was Jason the enemy?
Shit. Jason had messed with his senses. Dick’s head was chaotic, his emotions causing him to tense up.
Was he wrong? Was he just like Bruce? Was he jumping to conclusions just because Alfred told him you were out? Should he investigate this Carter you said you were with?
No. I’m not Bruce.
And now, you were looking at him with angry eyes, betrayed and appalled by his accusation.
*** Large.
That was the first thing that came to Dick’s mind when he saw his little brother.
The last time Dick saw him, he was much shorter, and definitely not as bulky.
And the last time Dick saw Jason, he was giving him a hug goodbye, complaining that Dick had messed up his hair.
And now, Jason was aiming a gun at him.
The gunshot didn’t hurt nearly as much as the thought that Jason had indeed shot him. Did Jason hate him that much?
You’re almost as guilty as he is, Jason’s voice echoed in his head.
“Bruce,” he gasped in the comms, “I’m down. They got away.”
“I heard a gunshot,” the deep voice in his ear spoke.
“Yeah, Jason shot my leg,” Dick winced, “Didn’t hit bone but I think it nicked my artery.”
“There are children here,” Batman said, “I was right. He’s sabotaging the Powers’. Gordon should be here soon. You control your bleeding.”
Dick nodded to himself and took a deep breath before plunging his finger into the gunshot wound to keep himself from bleeding out.
***
“...suspects that the crime lord only known as Red Hood and an unidentified female were behind the home invasion. Maria and Joseph Powers were left in a gruesome state according to reports, but their only child Carrie Powers was unharmed. The authorities are not sure what Red Hood’s motive was, but more will be elaborated during Commissioner Gordon’s public address later this afternoon...”
Dick heard you close the door.
“You didn’t come home last night,” he lowered the volume of the television.
“Uh, yeah,” you answered.
Dick looked over at you. You seemed tired, eyes swollen and red from crying, wearing an oversized t-shirt that he didn’t recognize.
“I was at-”
“Carter’s?” he finished your sentence for you.
“Yeah,” you nodded, sitting down next to him on the sofa.
Dick frowned to himself. Your arms were crossed, you were avoiding eye contact, your body was angled away from him.
“You heard about the Powers’?” he turned his gaze towards the television.
“I saw the news on the way here,” you monotoned.
You smelled like a different shampoo. It was familiar, but Dick couldn’t remember where he had smelled it before.
“So you know that-”
“Yes, Jason did it,” you said rigidly.
“Along with-”
“His partner.”
Ah, now he remembered the smell. Jason’s favorite shampoo. He used to make fun of him for choosing one that was called what it was called. He didn’t really care about it, Dick kept his hair soft and fluffy with multiple women’s hair products. He just liked to rile Jason up because he was so defensive about it.
And with that, Dick let out a long, disappointed sigh.
“Bruce is in the cave. I suggest that you think long and hard about what to tell him,” Dick offered you a soft smile, “But no matter what you choose to say, you’ll always be my sister, and I’ll always love you no matter what, okay?”
You gave him a look of shock, and then realised that he had figured it out.
“I’m sorry, Dick,” you lips trembled, your eyes started brimming with tears.
“No, kid. I’m sorry,” he replied, “Go.”
You nodded and left.
Despite being right all along, he didn’t feel any sense of achievement. Dick couldn’t help but partly blame himself. For being so absent, for being neglectful, for being a bad brother.
Dick wasn’t perfect, but like hell would he stop trying to be.
***
For years Bruce had tried to stop feeling guilty for being relieved whenever someone else takes care of a problem he couldn’t solve- especially when it involved murder.
Bruce had tried to take down the Powers for almost a decade, and everytime he got close, there was always another obstacle in the way. It was difficult to expose the rich and powerful without resorting to violence, without resorting to breaking his principles.
So Bruce was ready to stop himself from internally celebrating their deaths. This time, however, he wasn’t as pleased. Because this time, it was Jason who brutally murdered two people. Jason, who was supposed to be under his care and responsibility.
“Bruce?” he heard your timid, small voice from behind him. “I have to tell you something.”
And there it was.
Bruce turned around and looked straight at you, piercing your eyes with his own as he waited on your confession.
A minute passed.
“I’m V,” you struggled to speak, “I’ve been meeting up with Jason for a few months now. I didn’t know he was Red Hood until you told me. But when you did tell me, I chose to confront him and team up with him anyway.”
Bruce didn’t say anything.
“He- he’s not a bad person, Bruce,” you justified, “He’s just really hurt. He needs help.”
You were telling Bruce things he already knew.
“I- I fell in love with him,” you continued, “And I let my feelings cloud my judgement and betrayed your trust. At first I thought that he was onto something, that his… methods were better than yours. And I was angry that you kept secrets from me. But after last night- after what I saw- I couldn’t- I couldn’t stay.”
Bruce clenched his jaw.
He suspected it. Dick suspected it. But for your sake, the both of them chose to put their trust in you. He had tried so hard to change from his old ways. He learned his lesson with both Dick and Jason.
He didn’t want you to go through the same thing they did.
So, he chose to blindly trust you anyway, hoping that he wasn’t right.
“I’m sorry, Bruce,” you were sobbing now, “I’m so sorry. Please, say something.”
After another minute of watching you break down in front of him, Bruce finally spoke up.
“Hang up your colors. You’re no longer my Robin.”

Penny and Winter as Symbolic Human Machines
So honestly, I’m really impressed by how well done the ending of RWBY Volume 8 was with regard to character arcs being fulfilled, especially for Penny and Winter. I’ve seen a lot of takes, some that I somewhat agree with, and some that I just don’t, that Penny’s death was “bad writing,” and I think that, subjectivity of what constitutes bad writing aside, this is ignoring a lot of aspects of V7/V8 that made for a very compelling narrative, and feels heavily based in just people wanting Penny to not have died.
And I get this! Penny is one of my favorite characters and I’m very sad that she died; however, I really actually loved how fitting her death was for her story and the broader story of RWBY as a whole, so I wanted to do a write-up of my whole rant on this so that people could read it and see my thought process for why this only made me love Penny’s writing more. I’m not necessarily going to ascribe value to the writing itself in this analysis, as that is highly subjective, but I am biased so that’ll shine through some.
V7 through V8 had a lot of moments that frankly I hadn’t picked up on right up until the end that worked to build a dynamic interplay between Penny and Winter’s characters. Specifically, Penny's role is of a literal robot becoming less of a machine in the thematic sense and more of a person throughout, contrasting with Winter, who, while she is helping Penny realize herself as more of a person and less of a tool, is going through the opposite experience herself. This is essentially textual - it’s explicitly said by Winter herself in less words during the Maiden power transfer scene in V8E14.
When we as the audience reconnect with Winter at the start of V7, she is firmly entrenched as Ironwood’s confidante and second-in-command, serving as a face of the Atlas military as it squeezes Mantle. It’s safe to say that not many Mantle citizens like her very much, but she is insulated from this and continues to follow orders without regard for the welfare of the people. Ironwood at this point is already extremely authoritarian, even though he hasn’t graduated to full on dictatorship and declared martial law yet, and his will is also imposed on her through bringing her into the fold with the chief purpose of grooming (god this word feels grossly fitting given their dynamic) her to become the next Winter Maiden.
Winter, despite holding a a significant level of power and authority due to her military rank, has very little agency in this decision. She insists that her choice to take up the duty as Ironwood ordered is something she’s grown into and chosen, but it’s alarmingly clear that this is not the case; nearly every action she takes in V7 is still fully in the purview of Atlas (read: Ironwood)’s goals. I would go so far as to suggest that Ironwood giving her this position within the military after she escapes her father’s influence is intentionally conditioning her to view him as the sole way out of an abusive situation, and to disguise the fact that this new situation is just as abusive as the first below the surface.
Penny’s role in V7 is completely in opposition to this; while she is still theoretically under the control of the Atlas military, she is presented as the Protector of Mantle and seems to be beloved by the people. Our immediate image of her in Atlas is one of emotion and caring; she is overjoyed to see her friends from Beacon again, and this continues throughout the volume as she talks about what it means to be a person with them, Ruby and Winter especially. When things start going wrong and she is accused of killing people through the doctored footage from the rally, she is horrified at the prospect of being seen as a monster and continues to make every decision with the aim of protecting everyone around her, even at the expense of what her “duty” to Atlas might be. It’s clear that she is growing into her own agency, rather than being beholden to what Ironwood wants for her, and this helps prove to herself that she is her own person, not simply a tool of the military, not a machine.
The climactic scene of V7 takes these two character arcs running in strained parallel and drives a wedge between them, even as they battle a common enemy side by side. Winter’s devotion to Atlas (read: Ironwood) results in self-destructive tendencies, uncaring for her personal survival if it would further a goal that she ultimately and ironically does not truly believe in. Penny, however, begins to entirely shake this duty, risking even the Maiden power going to Cinder if it means saving Winter from dying. To her, personal feelings (ding ding ding!) and personal friendships mean more than duty to a state, or even (as we see later) her own well-being. Self destructive tendencies aside, this loyalty to people she earnestly cares about, who earnestly care about her, is loaded with symbolism that separates her from the metaphor of machine.
The result of the V7 finale reinforces the track the two of them are on; Winter, having been molded into a machine of the military, fails in her duty, while Penny, who has begun to recognize herself more and more as a person, succeeds at keeping the power from Cinder. She still has a massive amount of self-doubt and deep-seated fear that she doesn’t count as a person, but the Maiden power, being the perfect thematic symbol of “maidenhood”, goes to her, proving her to be a “real girl” and reinforcing the ongoing narrative. Winter, battling her own mixed feelings over being chosen for the power, never questions this; it’s clear that she, too, recognizes that Penny “was always the real Maiden, while [she] was the machine. This also reinforces Penny’s narrative being heavily trans-coded, but I think that’s pretty obvious and doesn’t need to be reiterated. The two of them part sides here, one remaining with the Atlas military and one actively rebelling against it.
As Ironwood starts going off the deep end at the end of V7 and throughout V8 and starts sacrificing everyone around him to fuel his own narrow and tyrannical view of how to save Atlas, Winter simply...falls in line. She is continually forced to follow harsher and harsher orders, and any choices she makes as part of that, with only two exceptions, still are entirely in service to Ironwood. She has become, in essence, a machine locked into a set path, a path she, conflicted as she may be, follows all the way up to a choice she cannot abide - mass murder. Even orders that would result in her sister’s closest friends’ deaths she follows unquestioningly - it’s unclear whether she would have actually gone through with it, since the option is taken off the table by forces outside her control, but she certainly says as much in her conversation with Marrow. Only the prospect of annihilating the entire city of Mantle finally snaps her off the track Ironwood has set her on, making her recognize that all of this has never been for Atlas at all, but for Ironwood’s own ego. Fittingly, finally seeing Ironwood as her enemy and not a savior, she is tasked with taking him down herself.
Contrasting this, Penny’s role in V8 is entirely one of rebellion. The entire volume is her building her agency more and more, making decisions based on what she thinks is right and what she values. She rarely listens to any one person telling her what to do; even her father, who she loves dearly, isn’t able to make her do something when her sense of justice is on the line. Ironwood no longer has his hold on her for the most part; any attempt at manipulating her into doing something against her own morals is met with defiance, supported by her friends’ love for her. She has to be outright hacked to be forced into doing his bidding, and she fights this all the way down, her own inherent personhood pushing back against this attempt to dehumanize her. In this sense, even her becoming organic symbolizes this; she and the people she cares about defy this dehumanization of her, finding a way to free her from the last remaining vestiges of Atlesian influence and further reclaiming her own agency.
And what does she do with that agency when she is faced with oblivion? She simultaneously affirms it by making her final choice in a desperate situation, defying Cinder’s attempt to rip her power away, and also gifts it in the form of the Maiden power to the woman who she is watching attempting to also shake the shackles of Atlas, symbolically showing Winter her own inherent humanity. This decision, though dire, is in recognition of what is most important to her: her friends. Even believing half of them are dead, she gives up her life to ensure the rest survive. In the final moment she has with Winter, she reassures her that she won’t be really gone: the memory of her choice and who she is as a person will live on through Winter’s continued choices, through her agency.
In the end, neither of them were machines; just two hurt people fighting back against a brutal world that sought to strip their agency away. The tragedy in this conclusion, that that brutal world took one of their lives away, is fought just as defiantly. Penny knows that gifting the power in her soul to Winter means that her death won’t be meaningless, that her agency will last beyond her mortality and might result in the world finally being freed from the threat of destruction. It’s because of hope, not despair, that she makes her final choice.

law school ep 15 (and solhwi overall)
gonna put in my two cents for the line that singlehandedly caused the solhwi nation to implode.
(apologies in advanced because my thoughts are too messy for me to neatly put it in a post but i want to say it anyway—also this is just the way i view solhwi so please don't come screaming at me if you disagree!)
i'm a diehard solhwi shipper and i love their relationship, and think they have one of the best relationships out there in the fictional world, and also definitely one of the healthiest. but to me, their relationship extends far beyond the romantic relationships we so often see portrayed in media.
kim beom said in one interview that this relationship between HJH and KS is kin to that of a soulmate relationship that's not necessarily romance, and i find myself agreeing with that notion. while soulmates are typically used to describe romantic partnerships, it doesn't necessarily have to start with romance. (many people have pointed this out in other posts so i won't go further down the fact that HJH x KS's relationship is a friends-to-lovers slow burn but you get me.)
but in fact, this bond between soulmates (or at least how i define it), in my opinion, is far beyond what we usually see in romance. as in, it's not just someone you like, but it's someone whose changed your life in a certain way. i know some may be averse to the idea of having to change for the one you love because loving is the notion of accepting someone in spite of the person's flaws, but what i mean is that when you love someone in this way, you want to change because of them. you see them, and they inspire you, and you grow in your own way. once again—growth is a very subjective idea, and even for HJH and KS we can see them grow in different directions—but we can clearly see how they have impacted each others' lives.
it's quite obvious, imo, how KS's life has been impacted by HJH's. she's,, not the "smartest" out there, and we can't deny that. we know she probably won't make it through law school if not for HJH's help. HJH is always there, a step ahead of KS, but he's not just being proud about it, instead opting to help her understand what the laws are and why they are the way they are, which KS especially needs, being a particularly empathic person. but we've also seen that HJH has helped KS beyond simply academics. he's always been there to protect her—almost all their interactions have proven that (the camera outside her house, the hungover soup, the switching seats—i think literally everything?..?..?.??). maybe she doesn't necessarily need protection, but surely thanks to his protection she's much better than she might've been without, especially knowing her terribly miserable life.
but i often wonder why HJH is so heart-eyes of KS of all people. i mean, i know love is love and sometimes you just catch feelings, but i believe there's more meaning behind their relationship than meets the eye. like you don't just look at someone so lovingly for it to be just a crush, y'know? the first reason that comes to mind is clearly simply KS's amicable personality. she definitely stands out: she's not that intelligent, struggling and barely surviving, but she has insane passion to pull through even despite truth attacks (like SJH saying she should reconsider her life decisions, saying that a chance of passing isn't something to be proud of, etc). she treats everything with such a positive outlook, and, well, KS is just an adorable human, so it's hard not to have a little crush her.
what makes KS stand out most, the core of her personality, is that she has hope, despite everything. she's been through shit because of her circumstances—left by her twin sister without a word, been in juvie, has no money to deal with it—you know, entire backstory. but instead she fights her weakness, even though she feel like it should've been her sister, even though she's not smart enough, because she has to do this. she keeps going, even though things keep turning out for the worse for her, holding hope when circumstances are most dire. but why? because she strives for justice. she doesn't want to be wronged. she wants the law to own up its mistakes, wants to make sure the law gets its own revenge. that's why she wants to work in law, yeah? and so she keeps fighting, even when hope seems lost.
okay but why did i mention this? because i think this is what HJH sees in KS. why? because this is what he needs.
HJH had lost hope. in an episode (i don't remember which), he mentioned he doesn't trust anyone, and it's obvious why: his uncle. it's the worst kind of betrayal that causes your ideals being burned down. he realized that even people who work in law can be corrupt, people who he thought he could trust above all others, people who seemed utterly good. and then he just begins to regard everyone with baseline amity, and no further. many have pointed out he doesn't have real friends (other than KS), even though he looks outgoing and friendly. it's not quite shown, but it must've been lonely. and a lonely fight, trying to prove that he will be a better prosecutor than his uncle was. and we know that HJH's nature as a person is to be calculating, objective, seeing things through facts and statistics; it's what makes him so intelligent. what that also makes him is realistic, and more often than not, that is almost equal to pessimistic—because reality just... sucks, as has been proven by the betrayal of his uncle. and further into the drama we see only more corrupt people in the business, so we certainly don't get out hopes fueled.
there's scarcely anyone in what we see who's actually pursuing law because they're passionate about the law, or if they are, they're not often very... human in doing it. examples: YJH, SJH, KSB are all very cold and indifferent types, people who really just come and do what they do, focus on studies (in the case of YJH, his teaching), and interactions with others are treated as "lesser". SJH and KSB in particular—they're good at the law, sure, but they seem to prioritize their position in law first and foremost. SJH and KSB don't hesitate to call out their losses, and even would rather not intervene for justice if it meant their position would be compromised. not that they're bad characters, not at all; i mentioned them simply to compare them to KS, who, despite not having the brains to do half the things she's supposed to do and earning herself nosebleeds everytime she tries, still does what she does for justice, passionately, hopefully, all for righteousness.
okay this was longer than i intended WHEW so i'll cut to the chase: long story short, HJH needs KS because KS gives him hope. hope of a humanity where people actually work in law and choose to fight for justice against all odds, even if the system itself is infiltrated by filth and corruption. KS is someone who, in her first lecture, was grilled the fuck out by Yangcrates, yet the first thing she does after she nearly throws her guts out is ask HJH whether he can tutor her. she does not ever lose hope, and that, truly, is what stands out to HJH, what he needs.
and KS needs HJH because he is her hope as well! hope by itself does no good if you can't actually do something about it, and KS knows this. HJH, despite seemingly just being someone to help her in her studies, is someone she needs if she wants to achieve her goals, if she wants to get back on the law the right way. which is why, in the end, KS and HJH are, while independent in their own way, dependent on each other in terms of their growth—KS gives HJH hope in humanity, HJH helps KS realize (make real) her hopes that would have been dreams if not for her.
oh my god i've rambled on this long without stating my point: THE DAMN LINE.
HJH saying he owes her makes sense in this light because, indeed, KS's positive outlook in everything keeps him going. it gives him a reason to keep wanting to work in law, because she is a reason to believe in goodness and justice, that there will be people who keep fighting for justice against all odds. he owes this to her—and perhaps that is why he goes all out to help her achieve that hope, perhaps that's why he goes out of his way to care for her. because they are each other's missing puzzle piece, the other half. soulmates.
sigh ok this was long ONE FINAL POINT. everyone has their own opinion on a solwhi ending, so i might as well chip in mine.
certainly, as a solhwi shipper, i want them to end up together. i believe they're really the best of soulmates, two people who just complement each other so well. but in the current timeline, them having a romantic relationship out of the blue would be,,, simply unnecessary, imo. they're still very much in the stage of friendship, and are both dealing with their own personal baggage, that shoving a romance would just take away the focus from their growth. i personally think even this platonic relationship is already a beautiful one, one that outshines many of the romances i've watched, even without having to flood everything under the romance light—which i think many can agree with me, seeing as how solhwi is shipped so much. i still want to see them end up together, though, so SEASON TWO LAW SCHOOL MANIFESTATION. please please please directors writers make it happen i am begging you. thank you.
sorry for this long ass post, thank you if you do read it and leave any thoughts! again this is just my opinion, you're free to let me know if you think differently or anything, or shoot me a message if you want to scream about solhwi or whatever i'm just solhwi brainrot 24/7 🤸🏻♀️

So I was rewatching some of MYK Season 2 and it had me thinking..do you notice the insane amount of parallels and overall similarities in character arcs between MYK’s Beyazied (Gulbahar’s son) and MY’s Mustafa (Mahi’s son?). Both had a sense of undying loyalty and love/respect to the respective sultans of their time while also meeting their demise at the sultan’s hands, both maintaining positive relationships with their half-siblings despite opposition from their enviornments, both being the only children of mothers who weren’t favorites but were extremely politically ambitious and skilled. Both being princes popular with the janissaries of their time and were seen as a looming threat towards the sultan’s power. I even feel like like Beyazied and Mustafa were similar in their disposition and sense of justice and morality. Tell me am I wrong here because I really can’t unsee it they feel so similar to me😭
Yes, MCK Bayezid and MC Mustafa share the same character archetype (hence why they have the parallels you mentioned), but that's the only thing they're similar in for me. The archetype is only a baseline for both of their characters - their development goes in a very different direction.
The thing that sets them apart the most from the start, is that Mustafa's strenghts and flaws are shaped more by sheer personality, while Bayezid is a character shaped more by curcumstance. That leaves room for more development for Bayezid where he eventually changes his stance on people around him, while despite of every hint of change, intrigue or word of advice, Mustafa's principles and beliefs stay the same.
Both Mustafa and Bayezid have a missing part of their lives that shapes their flaws, but that part is different in both of them. No matter how much support Bayezid seemingly had, he always missed his mother and wanted to see her face he's long forgotten, he wanted to see her all the more with each and every letter of hers. And once that chance presents itself, thanks to Murat, no less (good job, lad, good job, indeed....), he would surely want to see his back from exile mother in a good light, despite of all the wrongs she has done. That's why Gülbahar was Bayezid's blind spot. His love and respect for his mother goes beyond comforting her, defending her, hiding her mistakes and saving her from death, something that Mustafa would be also likely to do - with each event passing, Bayezid also begins to listen to her more and more, becomes convinced of her words that he's born in a middle of a war and sets himself even further against Murat and Kösem. Mustafa, on the other hand, has always been next to Mahidevran in every step of the way, with everyone around him avoiding their separation at all costs, hence he can be much more independent of her perspective. She can only go so far with opposing Mustafa's decisions, he always ends up choosing to do what he sees as right and just, even when his beliefs are challanged. He doesn't let his beliefs to be challanged by anyone. He doesn't want to let his beliefs to be challanged by anyone. He loves his mother deeply and he's also developed a need to protect her at all costs, but that need is based on his awareness of all she has experienced and to prevent her to suffer or worry ever again, not out of missing her whole self, which makes it a need outside of Mustafa's own predicament and decisions.
Mustafa wanting to keep his principles firm originates from his wish to prove himself to his father. Süleiman is Mustafa's blind spot. We see how much he wants to be next to him and have his attention even when he was little and since Mustafa was given a sense of purpose ever since then, too (while Bayezid has been living a life where he didn't yet see the dangers of the world in their fullest extent before Murat's complete downfall and before Gülbahar; he even mentioned to her that he didn't want the throne, even though he was constantly suspected of betraying Murat.), sure he would want to prove himself worthy and follow what SS (and Ibro and Mahi to an extent, too, but especially SS) has taught him when it came to ruling. (like when he chose justice instead of SS's order in E92, which, even though he disobeyed, wouldn't be right or just, since that person was slandered. Musti revealed that he acted like what SS has told him in the past, it being justice is most important.) Even when his father acted against him, Mustafa trusted him blindly, refusing to believe that a father could ever kill his son, even in close probability, no matter what everyone else around him said. (he wrote the letter when Cihangir told him of SS's words in E123, but Musti went to SS anyway, his trust being much stronger than his biggest inkling of suspicion.) He loved him too much, even when he slowly came to realize the growing wedge between them, never succumbing to the temptation to directly rebel against him. (except the kaftan situation, where his trust was directly put into question by a supposed action of his and even then Musti went to merely confront him and die as a warrior if it lead up to this, not kill him, and the trust became stronger than ever afterwards.) Bayezid, on the other hand, always sensed the danger Murat posed in some way, and he realized that no matter how much he proved his loyalty at first and refused drastic action at first, he would always keep suspecting him. Bayezid was allowed to see Murat in his biggest cruelty, at one point, Bayezid didn't see him as fit to rule anymore and was more than ready to dethrone him after an act too cruel by him in Bayezid's eyes. Even when he respected Murat, Bayezid didn't seem to want to prove his worth as much to him or to have gained his principles and beliefs by him and the bond between them wasn't as close, not for Bayezid. The cruelty of the world and Murat's own cruelty grew more and more, hence Bayezid became more open to criticize them and more ruthless, as a result of this. He strived to evade his wrath more than anything. And at one time, there was no turning back now between Murat and Bayezid, which also played a part in his execution.
The way Mustafa views Hürrem and the way Bayezid views Kösem are both very different, too. While I don't feel Mustafa completely hated Hürrem, per say and even in S04, he was rather done with her bullcrap than anything else, he had some resentment for her. He was aware that she played a part in Mahidevran's suffering and sensed that Hürrem giving birth hurts his mother. Still, he knew where the line was: he respected her position as a Sultana and the mother of his brothers, didn't blame her instinctively, didn't fault Cihangir for choosing his own mother in the kaftan sutuation and was willing to listen even in the peak of his resentment. (in E121, where he didn't believe that she wasn't behind the trap.) Bayezid had a more familial bond with Kösem, since she was like a mother to him when his real mother was missing. I feel he appreciated all the care she took for him and even loved her until a point. But once he turned against her, the mutual respect between them was gone completely, with him eventually discarding all she did for him and Kösem disowning him. His resentment for Kösem slowly grew through Gülbahar: the seeds were planted with the letters she was sending to him, which made Bayezid feel he didn't belong, opening a hole in his heart, and then Bayezid being open to listen to Gülbahar more and more with her setting him against both Murat and Kösem. Bayezid tied Kösem to Murat, while in truth, she acted outside of him. Bayezid eventually became convinced that Kösem was a danger. But while circumstances also helped, him standing "on the other side of the war" was bound to break them apart. Bayezid and Kösem already had different goals. The more he sided with Gülbahar's view, the more that cemented their rift. He fully stood against her once she confronted him about him hiding Gülbahar, that made him give up on her to the point he agreed to have her killed in the Eski Saray, since then it would be easier to take down Murat. Despite of Mahidevran's view and experiences, Mustafa's resentment of Hürrem grew because of her own actions: all her attempts to kill him are what made him embittered towards her to the point of him declaring that he won't have mercy on her and Rüstem. He views her actions separately from those of Süleiman- he's aware that she's trying to eliminate him with all her might and that she could maybe involve Süleiman in that, too, but still strives to see a bigger picture. All that is why his actions against her are more defensive than they're offensive and only go so far as to show her her place in some way, not to directly try to kill her, since he regards the feelings of his siblings, too. He sees her and Rüstem as a tandem in S04, but even then he would do actions more against Rüstem than against Hürrem.
I would say that Mustafa has a better relationship with his brothers than Bayezid. He truly loves them a lot and always considers what they have to say, no matter what, but his brothers themselves, even Selim, loved him, too, and never got in conflict with him, expect for the aftermath of him saving Selim from the janissaries, some side scenes with Mehmet when they made amends almost immediately or that one case where they both were little. And he indeed never stops caring about them. I wouldn't say the same for Bayezid, however. While he did share the same affection Mustafa had for his brothers at first, Kasim always had a strained relationship with him and it kept getting more and more strained by each day (even Ibrahim resented him at one point, too). And yes, truly, Bayezid did try to reach out for him many times, Kasim seeing Bayezid and Gülbahar's secret firsthand and the whole Kalika situation sealed things between them to the point of no return. He set himself against Kasim completely, turning out that Gülbahar succeeded to drive the wedge between them. (of course, Mahidevran also had this similar intent, but what I found interesting with her is that, E55 aside, she mostly tried to make Mustafa look at them merely as rivals and in E69 she did tell him that his love for them made her proud regardless; I'm preparing a whole post about comparing Gülbahar and Mahidevran I hope I'll finish some day ahahah) By deciding to take what's rightfully his, Bayezid disregarded his brothers, too. (I understand why he did, but still.) His perspective on them changed just like everything else.
I agree that both Mustafa and Bayezid have a sense of justice, but while Mustafa's justice is based more on morals, principles, nobility, familial bonds and "doing the right thing" in general, Bayezid's justice becomes more "warped". Bayezid sees many injustices done to him or his mother and no matter how much he held back from acting the way his supporters wanted him to, he comes to respond to the injustice with injustice, as well. Or worse yet, he already views the injustice as justice. He perceives leaving his previous, "purer" principles behind as what is right and since he's in a war, he's already ready to do "whatever it takes" to ascend the throne. It's like he restrained himself for too long while reality around him ensued. Mustafa was always aware of this reality, even if deep down inside, even when he was trying to deny it when it came to SS, yet he chose not to leave "his own self" behind. Despite of all the intrigues against him, he responded to the injustice with justice. He held onto this until the end. He held onto this in spite of every opposition or injustice. And yes, both of these approaches were to Mustafa and Bayezid's detriments, respectively, in their distinct circumstances.
Sure, both of Mustafa and Bayezid did "the right thing" prior to their executions (going to SS - choosing not to go to the persian şah as a way out). It was expected for Mustafa, due to his established character and flaws, but for Bayezid it has become the exception - I saw him as more irritated that Gülbahar and Sinan worked behind his back when he told them not to a while ago, but maybe when he didn't succeed to do what he attempted to get on the throne, he decided that he'd rather die, but not run. And his mother's safety was still his first priority, even in death. Even then he didn't exactly realize his mistake, rather that he would be executed for it, since he still acted high and mighty in front of Kösem. Mustafa wasn't really aware of why SS called him in the first place, he wasn't aware of the intrigue with the letter, he didn't know what went wrong, hence he didn't have a true reason to doubt all that, despite of the words of everyone else, so of course he approached the situation like he typically would. It was only Cihangir's words to him where the doubt appeared and he still didn't back down on his decision. Bayezid took a more immediate decision based on curcumstance (with one scene with him ruminating in his chambers), while Mustafa took the decision he usually would. They were both executed by their fathers, but due to different reasons and even before the executions and with their once same foundation as characters, both of them acted differently here.
Though no matter how different they turn out to be in hindsight for me, I still consider MCK Bayezid as a response to MC Mustafa anyway - what MC Mustafa would've been if he let curcumstance influence him and decided to act against his father. (I also did mention in your previous ask about Mustafa that the fandom does tend to view him as MCK Bayezid's exact copy sometimes, but that isn't quite true.) When the crippling realization that your parent could disregard you comes through and you decide not to stand by that and let your survival instinct kick in, after all. Anyhow, I find both of them very interesting to compare and contrast and I love both of their characters, so thanks for giving me the chance to delve into this topic at last. ^^

Persona 5/Persona 5 Strikers: Pro-Police or Anti-Police?
Hoo boy... So this honestly has been a LONG time coming on my end because I have seen so much of that debate on social media (Twitter namely) and I can see the points of BOTH sides but there have been moments where it just got out of hand... Especially whenever people tried to put in a more grey/nuanced take only to be slammed and taken out of context. Even repeatedly mentioning the interrogation at the beginning of P5 which, I will admit has gotten tiresome. At least for me, I do still feel for Joker and I wished the game acknowledged his trauma more but there's a thing called, "beating a dead horse" and this is one along with "Haru says ACAB" in Strikers (which was done THREE TIMES in the same arc and it got annoying fast, like shut up already! We get it!). So, let's dive in a little bit:
MAJOR SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT!!!
Persona 5/Persona 5 Royal
Now let me just say I know! Police in Japan are just as bad if not worse than the West and I STILL hate the idea of Makoto wanting to become a cop for such naive reasons (especially with what happened to Sae, her own sister!)... But there are at least some of form of nuances sometimes and by that I mean, I can see what they were trying to do? I do agree that P5/P5S backpedaled SEVERELY by deciding to sweep issues under the rug after addressing them and not continuing from such. In fact I feel like it could have been a hell of a lot better. But P5 did something different compared to previous games and addresses the issues DIRECTLY right at the beginning of said game! It was tense and horrifying, but needed. Of course... They then sweep it under the rug and act like nothing traumatic happened to our protag which is NOT a good look at all and I'm still pissed off about it. In the main game's case, it's portrayed as more black and white with only a SMALL amount of nuance like that cop that was trying to help Futaba when she went out by herself and got lost (which people ignore entirely by the way). So I CAN see where people got the "anti-police" message from... But that's only the tip of the iceberg as it's ACTUALLY more about Systematic Corruption, not exactly or JUST police corruption. Namely in politics with Shido and the Conspiracy (which is apparently still somewhat around in Strikers until Owada's downfall) controlling everything all the way to law enforcement. The force had been basically under his payroll (including the corrupt SIU Director before his death) whether by force or not (mostly not in this case though). Now honestly, the police depicted there are undoubtedly rotten to the core save for a VERY SMALL handful (the cop that was trying to help Futaba which, again, gets ignored by several). Look at the interrogators who ruthlessly beat and drug a minor without any second thought or remorse for example. But again, the black and white narrative the game kept unwittingly doing ended up being to its detriment in a way. I'm not defending those assholes AT ALL! They deserved every punishment given to them! But for a game that goes on about grey morality... It doesn't quite deliver on that. Still though, it does emphasize that it's more of the fault of the whole corrupt system, not just one part of it. There needs to be change and reform which is what our MCs were trying to do in a way (more like inspiring change but still). In the end, it's all about the following:
Corruption and abuse of power.
Again the police depicted in this game were incompetent at best, corrupt at worse with very few silver linings. But it's not just them but rather the one person responsible for the whole mess. Who had them under his payroll? Who controlled them and by extension all of Tokyo? Who was willing to dispose of anyone who "outlives their usefulness" or is perceived as a threat to what he wants (including his own family)?
SHIDO AND BY EXTENSION THE CONSPIRACY
Bottom line: They are definitely a problem but it's not just them.
"But, Joker and his trauma?"
I definitely understand that and still do. I fully believe he has and still has trauma with the police. Easy! But... I do feel like people go too far with it sometimes. It's hard to explain but there have been moments where people either use it as a justification/argument against someone trying to provide a more nuanced view of things or... Dare I say, depict him like a "uwu soft traumatized boi." Like I said, it's hard to explain on my end so feel free to ignore it. Everyone deals with trauma differently so there is STRONG chance that I'm overanalyzing it. I just remember moments where I just feel a little, I guess annoyed? I'm not sure exactly but final thing: I understand what he went through and I can't imagine how long it would take to recover but I hope he DOES overcome it.
"Sae? Akechi?"
Yep, even though their jobs are different, they are by and large members of law enforcement no matter how you spin it. Both were broken in a way. Akechi is pretty easy to explain with how Shido negatively impacted his life but not much about Sae, who dealt with sexism/misogyny at her workplace along with the trauma of her father's (also a cop) death. She no doubt had some idealism only to be hit with the fact that she's gonna have to use underhanded/downright illegal tactics to get by and even rise up the ranks. She, therefore ended up (well, nearly) corrupted herself before coming to her senses. That's honestly one of the BIGGEST REASONS why I felt like Makoto joining the force to become a police commissioner isn't a good, even a downright naïve, idea. I honestly would have been somewhat fine with it if it weren't for that fact among other things. Regardless of her willpower, it will go south fast.
Now... Onto Strikers!
Persona 5 Strikers
Since the game came out and I started playing it, I still feel like the system is still beyond saving, especially when attempting to do it from the inside. But I don't mind the added nuances that P5 didn't do much of. It's still continuing the critiques, just shows more of what does happen within said system and even has an ACTUAL officer (Zenkichi) say, "Yeah, my job sucks, everyone's corrupt, there are much better ways to do things and make a change but not this. I'm only staying because I have a daughter to take care of and it's all I know. I'm no different from them." Was it all handled well? I wouldn't say "yes" (Joker's trauma is BARELY addressed at all of course) but a little better than what P5's narrative did which only addressed the issues but not exactly follow up on them. Now to be fair... In the system, regardless of where you live, any one within it who remotely tries to do something or speak against it either lose their jobs or even go "missing" irl. Those have happened and it's more proof that yeah, it's rotten to the core. There's no denying it but regardless, that's NOT what the game is about at all. At least that's what I feel about it as it's only PART of the narrative. I think Zenkichi puts it best here:
Speaking of Zenkichi... Oh boy... Now I definitely understand some of the criticisms with him but honestly, he was the best written (PT) character I've ever encountered! He was honestly the perfect representation of those that genuinely want to help and do good, only to be held back by an extremely harsh reality. It was already hinted at with Sae but here? It 100 percent confirms just how harsh and even cutthroat it can be if it could break someone's idealism so badly. Even Kaburagi of all people thinks the same thing Zenkichi said:
Then there's his past and it's a tragic one! But let's look more at the decisions he ended up making:
While it was no doubt done to protect his daughter, he ended making a selfish decision along with a selfless one (which was brilliant!) with not only allowing the cover up of his wife's death and denying justice for her, but also ruining an innocent person and their family's lives.
It's horrible, but also... There's a grey area/nuance as with the rest of his character. It was both understandable, but also wrong as he, as Akane's Shadow puts it:

He sacrificed his values, his morals, all for the sake of having a peace of mind. Speaking of Akane, she's also an interesting case in a way that she more or less perfectly represents the more "black and white" views on justice in general. Namely the more toxic/biased kind. Her reasons are also understandable but she was also acting selfishly by only focusing on how SHE was effected by Aoi's death and not even considering those that were also grieving her death and/or that people grieve/handle grief differently than her. But back on topic.
Her own views and beliefs that law enforcement basically SHOULD be dismantled (mostly out of said childish bias and black & white views) and it's framed as WRONG and it's very much correct on that. Chaos and order are two sides of the same coin, one can't exist without the other. When I say ACAB, I'm calling for reform, defund, have the corrupt held accountable for EVERYTHING and even face jail time for their crimes! Defund the police, have the ones that arrest, harm, and even murder out of bias (race, gender, etc.), lose their badges/jobs and locked up, make improvements! It's saying that there IS still corruption out there and there's no denying it. But fully eliminating the law in general will just lead to more problems. Now granted, she's young and clearly doesn't fully understand why those views are ultimately wrong but still... It was a very interesting subject to tackle and I feel like they handled it well.
Now back to Zenkichi, he was at first in denial about his decisions ultimately being the wrong ones too and even tries to justify it. Of course, his Shadow said otherwise and that was when he finally admitted that he really did act no different from the criminals he despised. But it also doesn't mean he can't redeem himself and that's what ultimately leads to his new resolve:
That right there along with everything else! There's the nuance! And ultimately despite some hiccups, Strikers handled the grey morality and nuance beautifully! Especially regarding law enforcement! Dare I say, even better than the base game! It continues the critiques with no problem but also showing different sides and areas of it! There is good and evil, but what about in-between? What about the more greyer area? It still says that there IS corruption, sometimes even beyond saving but... Sometimes a small silver lining is hidden somewhere.
Now, the ultimate question:
Is P5 & P5S (namely the latter) Pro-Police or Anti-Police?
Personally, my answer is this: Neither.
Why? What theme do they both have in common?
JUSTICE
Someone puts it best on Twitter that the games are more pro-justice and I fully agree!
P5/P5S gives the idea about following your OWN justice, your OWN moral code and rules, paving your OWN path and not let others dictate it! That's what the MCs ultimately start to learn in both games. Therefore it's pro-justice. Again, do I agree that the system is beyond saving? Yeah. Do I at least acknowledge and understand what the narratives are trying to say and nuances regardless even if I don't agree with some writing decisions (ex: Makoto wanting to become a commissioner despite everything)? Also yes. But at the same time, don't judge a book by its cover for other people (not just law enforcement and politics mind you). Especially some that genuinely DO want to help at best. That there is nuance and greyness, just have to look closely. Some of the MCs are still TERRIBLY written and executed (even annoying) but the message was still somewhat there.
Final Thoughts
Now I fully understand how you all feel of course! I still believe in ACAB and even I agree that maybe I'm one to talk and have a lot more to learn about the world... This is just my own attempt at putting my own two cents in. If you disagree, that's fine! This is just what I've felt should be at least talked about more often. And I tried to phrase it as best as I can without coming off as insensitive or ignorant and if I did, I sincerely apologize for that! I'm not trying to say, come off as a "bootlicker" or any of the sort. I'm just trying show discuss more of the grey areas and nuances that are, more often than not, constantly overlooked. How one interprets both games is ultimately up to them. You, the player. And this is my own interpretation. Simple as that. I hope you all have a good day/afternoon/evening!

Hi, what do you say to the people who claim Regulus is the real Slytherin hero, and not Snape? To me RAB always seemed like a plot device and nothing more so I don't get why he's being worshipped... He's just another rich pureblood kid...
I say this is a very bad take, and it is disrespectful (that's a strong word for something that isn't really important but I cannot think of a softer version) of the actual people who enjoy his character. I'm going to write down some thoughts, but there's more to it than just what I would reply to them - allow me to ramble a little on the roots of this claim and on the thought process embraced by Snaters and Marauders apologists (I've seen that some people don't like this term, so I mean people who erase the Marauders' flaws and make them morally superior to Snape, justifying them being abusers and him being abused.)
The nonsense of comparing a plot device to a complex, layered character: Comparing Severus and Regulus is ludicrous. You are comparing one of the most (I would argue the most well-written and complex, but Dumbledore is quite something as well) well-written, accomplished character of the books to a plot device. It is indeed what Regulus is, no matter if his character could have been really interesting/seems to be interesting: we know very little of him, and he exists solely for the Slytherin locket plot. The very little we know of him certainly isn't enough to express any critical judgment of his character; he is mostly made out of white pages which are filled out by his fans, which is great, and by the people making this kind of argument, which is unfortunate.
The interest in the character only stems in his usefulness: I would argue that the vast majority of people making this claim do not care at all for the character himself, despite using him as a moral high ground. It is not his character which interests them, but how useful he can be to fuel their hate and biased claims. His personality? Having being sorted in Slytherin. His merits? Being a Slytherin. This is the only fact that matters, because it allows them to 'prove' that Snape wasn't a hero (being a hero does not mean being a good person, by the way) and diminishes Severus' merits. Using a character solely for the purpose of depreciating, downgrading another is not appreciating them: it's just completely hypocritical. This is often the kind of flat argument used by people opposed to social justice movements, if you will allow the broad comparison: using something you have never cared for before (often minority populations) in an attempt to depreciate something, even though the very fact you are using them for this purpose shows how little concerned you are with the actual people you are talking about. Well, it reminds me of this a bit. The true purpose is to try and impose your own views, and here they try to legitimise them by filling an almost inexistent character with their views to carry on with their agenda.
The sudden leniency toward privileged characters: Making such a claim in fact once again proves that Snaters have an extremely biased, subjective and elitist vision of what being good means, an opinion on what is moral integrity (and superiority because they keep comparing people), which they also apply to James and Sirius. I think Regulus is loved because he is a Black, respected by the fandom because he comes from a pureblood, rich family. It is very easy to prove: look at how much love Draco and Lucius get, despite being supporters of blood supremacy, active members of a terrorist group, using discriminatory insults on a daily basis, being actively supportive of the murders of muggle borns/participating in these murders [do not misinterpret this - I'm pointing out double standards, not saying they should not be loved. One's interest in a character does not depend on the character's morals]. Look at how respected Snape was in the fandom before book 6, when people thought he was a rich pureblood from an ancient family. Social hierarchy has a great impact on how people view characters, and they tend to be much more lenient toward privileged characters, because prestige is attractive, even in fiction. Similarly - but it is more concealed - there is the usual refusal to acknowledge that social inequalities do impact one's life, choices, and opportunities to be or do good. The quote "You didn't make good choices! You had good choices" (Little Fires Everywhere) works quite well in this context, especially regarding James and Severus, but also regarding the Blacks versus Severus. Severus' survival was completely, utterly dependent on his adherence to blood supremacist values. This must be taken into account - but weirdly, this is an argument that is often used to prove Sirius' moral superiority, because his family required him to share their beliefs. This is ignoring that despite his difficulties, he still beneficiated from a support system and privileges that others did not have access to. Similarly, you cannot compare Regulus' and Severus' choices. And in my opinion, both are tragic; but if we had to take part in Snaters' silly arguments, then I would remind them that Regulus effectively had no obligation to join Voldemort, his parents were not death eaters. The pressure both characters experienced certainly wasn't of the same nature - even perhaps not of the same intensity. But does comparing them makes any sense, again...
The social biases: While Snape is blamed for his decision to join the death Eaters (rightly), Regulus is praised for his decision to leave them. While Regulus is pitied because he came from a family who brought him up with this ideology (just like Draco is), which apparently takes off all responsibility from him, Severus' background is never considered as a factor which pushed him right into extremists' opened arms. Regulus' privilege is used as an excuse; Snape's social disadvantage and familial issues are, at best, ignored, at worst, interpreted as proof of his inherently bad nature. Some people associate his upbringing with him being bad, whether they want to acknowledge it or not. While Regulus is headcanonned as handsome, Snape is constantly described as 'greasy' and 'ugly' by these same people, and you can see exactly how important appearances are to them. I'm even going to argue that worshipping a rich, handsome, privileged pureblood must sound better to them than being fond of the 'greasy git', and I am also saying these are mostly internalised biases. When you read these claims carefully, it sounds like in the mind of these people, Regulus is more legitimate as Slytherin's hero because he is better - inherently. And it is easy to see why.
The double-standards and their disturbing roots: This is also plainly ignoring the fact that Regulus and Snape defected for the same reasons, if we must make comparisons. Voldemort was targeting one of their loved ones, Kreatur for the former and Lily for the later, which made them realise, because they are humans and thus not selfless, how wrong his methods were when they turned against them. However, in Snape's case, turning against Voldemort in an attempt to save Lily is often held as proof of his selfishness/absence of morality: he wanted her for himself, he only deflected because someone he liked was in danger. In Regulus' case however, his gesture is seen as heroic and compassionate. Why? Well, there are a variety of reasons apart from Snaters' double standards, but I have noticed that most of them seem to think of Lily as 'belonging' to either James or Snape, and think Snape unworthy of having ever had Lily as a friend because of some kind of deep rooted flaws he had even as a child ('He tried to hurt Petunia with accidental magic when he was 11, he was always bad'. In fact I should make a post about how horrible this claim is.) In Regulus' case however, wanting to save Kreatur is seen as an act of compassion. Why? Not only because they want to make Regulus look better than Snape. I think it is also because Kreatur is a house-elf, an inferior being: Regulus' wish to protect him becomes praiseworthy, laudable, because house-elves do not really deserve consideration. So wanting to save him becomes an act of generosity. Even when you're not thinking of the double standards, this way of thinking is disturbing. Snape also turned against Voldemort at the age of 20, 21? Like Regulus did if I recall? They weren't death Eaters for very long. They both actively fought to bring Voldemort down. It would be tremendously hypocritical, wrong and plain bad faith to think of Regulus' action as superior to Snape's 20 years of hard work to bring Voldemort down.
So why can't Snape be a hero? I think this claim is a confession. To me it shows a very simplistic vision of heroism, of good and bad, of models, and a complete refusal to consider the grey, sometimes praise the grey- it's a failure to accept the complexity of the human functioning. Thinking that the people we praise for certain actions, or consider to be examples must be flawless is vain, simply because it is unrealistic, and we could not admire them/relate to them/like or dislike them/learn from them if they were not like us, layered and flawed - but this is exactly what this claim desperately wants us to believe. Or rather, what Snaters want to believe, while imposing their very biased views of good and bad, themselves rooted in prejudices. This is why they are using a character that is mostly inexistent: an empty, one dimensional character can fulfil this aim. This is also why so many people fail to appreciate characters such as James, Sirius and Remus without completely ripping off their flaws, and thus complexness - they cannot be loved if you can find fault in them.

Plus, Arya is clear that no one stood up for Mycah after the Hound killed him: "And no one had raised a voice or drawn a blade or anything, not Harwin who always talked so bold, or Alyn who was going to be a knight, or Jory who was captain of the guard. Not even her father." Arya, in standing up for her friend, is DIFFERENT from all the other highborns and warriors. Not just different from Sansa, but everyone who has a 'classist' view in their classist, feudal system.
2) It's why Arya is our lens into most of the trouble in the Riverlands and among the smallfolk, when almost none of the other POVs care about them - not Arianne or Jaime or Bran or Ned, or Sansa. Dany does too, after she's stepped out of her brother's shadow, but not in Westeros (yet, at least). But everyone in GOT is inherently classist, not just Sansa, and even Arya is ableist when she speaks with the hound about his face.
So, I will ask this question again.
In a hypothetical scenario where Arianne/Bran/Ned/Daenerys/Jon/Robb/Tyrion/Brienne/Barristan/Renly or Stannis were in that location when Joffrey cut into Mycah’s face with a sword, do you think these characters would have stood by and done nothing while an innocent child was being sadistically mauled?
In the moment, do you think that Ned Stark would have done nothing if he saw Joffrey mauling Mycah? Do you think Jon or Bran or Brienne would have done nothing? or Tyrion?
This is not a question of just classism. It’s simply being human and having basic empathy and compassion for someone who is being hurt. It’s being able to tell right from wrong. One can be classist and also step in to stop a child from being tortured. Do you agree? All our main characters are classist to various degrees. They believe in kings and queens and the specialness of their houses. At the same time, they can also think that it’s wrong for an innocent child to be tortured and stop it.
Scientific research has actually shown that children are more perceptive to unfairness.
Indeed, children apply a strong sense of fairness not only to themselves—they also stand up for others. We invited children to play a different game in which they learn about a decider who selfishly wanted to keep all candies for themselves, refusing to share with another peer. Our child participant then faces a choice: Do they stand by and do nothing or do they get involved and prevent the injustice? To make it especially difficult, children must pay a cost for intervening—they have to give up some of their own candy to prevent unfairness. Nevertheless, children regularly intervene, choosing to pay so they can prevent the selfish child from getting away with unfair behavior. Together, these findings show children hold themselves and others to high standards of fairness.
Arya is a realistic version of how any child would behave in that situation when they see another child being unfairly and sadistically hurt.
As you say, Westeros is a feudalistic society. The King is beholden to the houses and the Lords are beholden to the people. If the Lords are going to go around torturing small folk for no reason, how long do you think that Lord will last?
Stannis Baratheon who wouldn’t have given a damn about Mycah, would have moved to stop Joffrey because what Joffrey did was wrong and against the laws.
Do you think Randyll Tarly – the guy who abused his son and send him to the wall – cares for the smallfolk because he has rapist soldiers castrated? Tywin unofficially send his men including the mountain to rape and plunder the Riverlands during the WOT5K. Just like he send the Mountain to murder Elia and her children.
Joffrey - the kid who cuts open cats – thought to derive sadistic pleasure from torturing the poor butcher boy because it was just two girls Arya and Sansa around. Unfortunately for him, Arya was not going to be silent and Nymeria was not going to stand for her girl getting injured.
The issue with Sansa here is that she sees Joffrey cut another child’s face, sees 12 year old Joffrey – who is taller than Jon by the way – attack with a sword her skinny 9 year old little sister armed with just a stick. She sees all this and yet has more compassion and concern for Joffrey! This is honestly so comical to me – Joffrey is cartoonishly evil and Sansa is over there all oh my sweet beautiful prince.
Plus GRRM writes Sansa specifically as a literary foil to Arya, to contrast with Arya - so her classism stands out more when she thinks like this:
Sansa knew all about the sorts of people Arya liked to talk to: squires and grooms and serving girls, old men and naked children, rough-spoken freeriders of uncertain birth. Arya would make friends with anybody. This Mycah was the worst; a butcher’s boy, thirteen and wild, he slept in the meat wagon and smelled of the slaughtering block. Just the sight of him was enough to make Sansa feel sick, but Arya seemed to prefer his company to hers.
Which other character thinks this way of the smallfolk? GRRM specifically highlights Sansa's classism as a character trait. Do you see Ned, Bran or Arianne think this way about the small folk?
Yes, no one stood up for Mycah after he was killed – the deed was done. What could be done? It was Joffrey’s word against Arya’s – and the one witness chose to side with Joffrey. And no one cared enough about a butcher’s boy to continue fighting for justice.
If it was Arya who had been hurt of killed by Joffrey, the scenario would be different. Westeros is a feudal monarchy and the last time the heir of the king did something toward the daughter of a lord paramount, he certainly didn´t get away with it. That should be on everyone´s mind. If Joffrey had managed to kill Arya, or if Robert tried to harm Arya, Ned would have called his banners against KL and we would be reading an entirely different story.
A butcher's boy in Westeros unfortunately does not have that much power, nor does anyone care. Westeros is immensely classist, sexist, ableist etc. with societal prejudices and patriarchal laws. Arya does stand out from everyone in that regard. She cares for Mycah, mourns for him and wants justice for friend.
But it also does not mean that the Lords of Westeros were running around willy nilly torturing the small folk nor are there any rules prohibiting nobles from playing with or interacting with the small folk. Ned ate with his men and interacted with the small folk. Joffrey was a sociopath who seems to enjoy hurting people and unfortunately ran into Mycah that day. And it's Joffrey, Cersei and the Hound who are responsible for the deaths of Mycah and Lady.

On Goro Akechi’s morals and forgiveness (character analysis, but also just a very rambly post)
Akechi is… a very interesting character, I have no doubt about this. Also my favorite of course, if you hadn’t figured that out yet by this giant text you’re about to read (sorry). I have a lot I want to talk about in regards to him since he is so intriguing and we actually don’t have that much info about how his thought process works so it leaves a lot of room for speculation.
In any case, in this meta in specific I’m going to be talking about Akechi’s...morality(?), forgiveness and his relationship with regret. I’m not sure if that’s the best word to define this but I’ll roll with it for now. I’ll try to be fair and talk about things as I personally see them, it’s totally fine if you don’t share my views! Now, onto the actual meta.
Starting off, as people are obviously aware, Akechi is a morally gray character, a darker shade of, but he’s a sympathetic and tragic character nonetheless. That much is undeniable, he was written to be sympathetic, even if I’d argue Atlus did a pretty poor job of it in Vanilla (he was still my favorite ever since then though lol) but he’s reached his true potential in Royal, which makes me immensely happy to see. I get so unbelievably happy whenever I see people saying Royal changed their perception of him and started to like him more! But even then, there are a lot of people who just can’t forgive him for what he did, and that’s only natural. I personally think that, if you don’t try to sympathize with Akechi and truly, truly try to understand his mind and history, you’re doing him a huge disservice. But, forgiveness is something that everyone is free to think and decide if he deserves it or not. In Akechi’s case, I feel like forgiveness is something much more personal to the player, and this shows between the Phantom Thieves too.
There is a visual novel I hold very close to my heart called Umineko no Naku Koro Ni (which I’ll be quoting relentlessly throughout this entire post) that illustrates what I think better than I could put into words, so I’ll be quoting that scene with a few tweaks for better context:
“You said you understood the culprit’s motive.”
“...Yes.”
“Is that motive… a satisfying explanation for why they’d [commit murder]?!”
“Who knows. That’s for you to decide. Even if I say it’s satisfying, that doesn’t mean it will satisfy you. …You have to decide that for yourself.”
I really like this. It reminds me a lot of Akechi’s situation. I firmly believe that this has no “objective”, “most correct” answer to, just your personal feelings, which are the most important. I, as a player, do forgive Akechi, I want him to have a happy ending, another chance at life, manage to live happily with Akira and have some fun for once. That’s what “forgiveness” means to me in this situation, but while some people may empathize with Akechi, they still can’t forgive him. They think he should stay forever in jail or die since he cannot be redeemed in any way in their eyes. Where do I wanna go with this endless blabbering you ask, and I respond, I just want to try and see Akechi’s actions through two different lenses.
Well, I personally don’t like downplaying the crimes he committed and dumbing it down to “he was being manipulated” because, even if this is not false, it is not entirely correct either. Akechi is so fun to speculate about because he’s a character who is always clashing against himself in various ways as if he was in a constant state of internal turmoil, and this is not very different.
Akechi himself made the choice to go to Shido. It is extremely unlikely that he didn’t know he was going to be using his new powers for murder. He may have been very young, but despite the fact that he was a child forced to mature prematurely, he knew exactly which type of person Shido was. When he walked into that deal he was aware of the consequences and had fully made peace with the fact that he’d be taking another person’s life. Now, I’m not saying that Shido never manipulated him because he did, but not with that particular choice.
This alone tells plenty about Akechi’s morals. I believe that Akechi indeed has some level of empathy for other people, but I sincerely doubt he feels especially bad about the Okumura-like people he had to kill. He might feel bad for the family of the victims or just feel nauseated with himself, however, he doesn’t regret a thing. As if he had grown numb to it. ...Until a certain point, that is, but I’ll talk about that later.
I would also like to elaborate further on Akechi’s continuous conflict with himself, and this particular piece of Maruki’s confidant immediately reminded me of this:
He’s talking about Akira here, but isn’t it interesting to note that Akechi’s internalized and externalized realities are, in contrast to Akira’s, the farthest they could possibly be from each other? His sense of justice, childlike desire to be loved and seen as a hero, in contrast to the cold-blooded murderer he had become? It’s like there are two people fighting it out inside of Akechi’s brain (lol) which must cause him a lot of distress. I don’t believe that Robin Hood is a ruse or that his Detective Prince façade is entirely fake. The way I see it, they are his ideal, which he strayed so far away from he lost grasp of who he himself is.
In my opinion, Akechi has never cared about fame the slightest bit, he used all of that as an opportunity to act out the person he wished he was, just and virtuous, while still being the feral murderer and bloodstained person he is today. These are two integral parts of him that he has never known how to reconcile. It’s interesting to note that in the third semester he was the one who since the beginning advocated firmly to return to the harsh reality but he had spent the entire game living in the comforting “detective prince” dream he made for himself until the engine room scene happened.
With the third semester context, the engine room becomes so interesting because that scene is akin to Sumire finding out she’s not Kasumi. It’s a cold bucket of water thrown straight to Akechi’s face and telling him to wake up from this lie he made to comfort himself and face reality: he is no hero. Despite the fact that he is, too, a victim, he is simultaneously a murderer who perpetuated with the cycle of his father’s aggressions and he cannot escape that fact. Worse, he was being manipulated all along and his revenge plan and arguably his only reason to live AND justification for his actions was completely crushed.
Once again, this Umineko scene illustrates what I think Akechi’s situation up until that point was like:
Akechi rationalized every awful, inexcusable thing he did as, “It’s for my revenge’s sake” and ran with it. He was incredibly blinded by his hate and ignored the weight of the consequences of his actions up until that point where everything came crashing down right in front of his eyes. There is no excuse and no justification for that.
However, Akechi was also abused himself. There is no excuse for what he did, but is getting back at the person who took everything from him so reprehensible a thought? Is wanting justice against someone who essentially ruined your life not understandable? Many people like to say “cool motive still murder” or things of the like, but I’m asking you again to put yourself in his shoes.
Yet AGAIN with a Umineko screencap:
I played this the other day and one of the first things I thought of was Akechi. A lot of people draw parallels between Akechi and Adachi, but that’s just so damn wrong and make me lose my hair so much and become completely bald because that couldn’t be farther from the truth and I’m gently asking you to reconsider. In the pic above, Adachi would fit the “homicidal maniac” mentioned to a T, and while Akechi is by absolutely no means free of guilt and much less a stellar person, his crimes were moved completely by his heart.
For the people who use his choice to become Shido’s hitman to say Akechi does not deserve any kind of forgiveness and that he’s a murderous maniac, I ask you to at least think of what state of mind he was at that moment. Think very hard about it, imagine how completely bleak life must have looked like then, to the point that he risked everything on murder.
This is nothing more than my speculation, but I believe Akechi’s thought process at that moment was something along the lines of, “I have nothing to lose since my (current) life is completely meaningless". It was as if he had reached such a numb state he chose to forgo all his morals and humanity in pursuit of at least one thing that would give his life meaning, that being his hate for Shido, which I also think was the only emotion he ever truly understood well ever since his mom passed.
Since Akechi is all about conflicting emotions though, I would also like to remind you how vulnerable Akechi really is to any kind of affection. His “childlikeness” that Robin Hood represents was, by all accounts, still there. Akechi has a desperate need to be loved while simultaneously putting up walls and wearing masks, making it extremely difficult to have any kind of meaningful relationship. This is something that Shido thoroughly takes advantage of, too.
That’s also why one of his lines to Akira hit so much harder for me, following this reasoning. “If only we had met a few years earlier,” expresses many emotions at once. If Akechi had known something other than misery and hatred during that period of his life he would not have latched so thoroughly to that revenge plan. Akechi simply had nothing to lose, since he had nothing at all.
I mentioned earlier that Akechi doesn’t regret a thing, which I still think it’s true. Before he had met Akira, he truly did not regret a thing, but meeting Akira caused him a lot of strife because not only Akira is a person whose whole existence flaunts everything Akechi could have had if he hadn’t fallen into fate’s trap, but Akechi also experiences happiness through his connection with Akira. Hanging out and talking to him truly makes him happy, and it’s something more genuine than he’s ever known. Yet, it’s too late, because his choices were already set in stone and he had already pulled the trigger with no way to take any of the bullets back.
That’s why Akechi is so confusing, so controversial and sometimes uncomfortable to think about. There is no clear line between good or bad, he just is something in the middle. Akechi is both a person who ruined a lot of people’s lives with no regard whatsoever to the consequences but also a victim rebelling and retaliating against the person who took everything from him and made his life a living hell. That’s why it’s so hard for not only some players to form opinions about him but also downright uncomfortable for the Phantom Thieves to think about. There is no objectively best answer for what he deserves. It just doesn’t exist. Should he spend the rest of his life in jail, or dead, because his crimes were inexcusable? Or should he be given another chance at life to learn to be happy? It’s entirely subjective, and that’s why he’s so great to think or discuss about.
Aaand that’s it, I’m grateful you read so far, hope I didn’t piss anyone off, also not gonna pretend this wasn’t very self indulgent because of the amount of times I quoted Umineko in it. Anyways, thank you!
SIDE NOTE: I didn’t write this recently, it had been sitting on my drafts for some months now and I found it again today and decided to just release it into the wild because why not? I think this was meant to be much longer than it is and to elaborate more eloquently on a lot of points I brought up (like the PT with Akechi) but alas, I lost the train of thought and so it Perished.
