9 Out-of-This-World Moments for Space Communications & Navigation in 2023
How do astronauts and spacecraft communicate with Earth?
By using relay satellites and giant antennas around the globe! These tools are crucial to NASA’s space communications networks: the Near Space Network and the Deep Space Network, which bring back science and exploration data every day.
It’s been a great year for our space communications and navigation community, who work to maintain the networks and enhance NASA’s capabilities. Keep scrolling to learn more about our top nine moments.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Dragon spacecraft lifts off from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, on the company's 29th commercial resupply services mission for the agency to the International Space Station. Liftoff was at 8:28 p.m. EST.
1. In November, we launched a laser communications payload, known as ILLUMA-T, to the International Space Station. Now, ILLUMA-T and the Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) are exchanging data and officially complete NASA’s first two-way, end-to-end laser relay system. Laser communications can send more data at once than traditional radio wave systems – think upgrading from dial-up to fiber optic internet. ILLUMA-T and LCRD are chatting at 1.2 gigabits per second (Gbps). At that rate, you could download an average movie in under a minute.

NASA’s InSight lander captured this selfie on Mars on April 24, 2022, the 1,211th Martian day, or sol, of the mission.
2. Data analyzed in 2023 from NASA’s retired InSight Mars lander provided new details about how fast the Red Planet rotates and how much it wobbles. Scientists leveraged InSight’s advanced radio technology, upgrades to the Deep Space Network, and radio signals to determine that Mars’ spin rate is increasing, while making the most precise measurements ever of Mars’ rotation.
TBIRD is demonstrating a direct-to-Earth laser communications link from low Earth orbit to a ground station on Earth.
3. We set a new high record! The TeraByte InfraRed Delivery (TBIRD) payload – also demonstrating laser communications like ILLUMA-T and LCRD – downlinked 4.8 terabytes of data at 200 Gbps in a single 5-minute pass. This is the highest data rate ever achieved by laser communications technology. To put it in perspective a single terabyte is the equivalent of about 500 hours of high-definition video.

A 34-meter (112-foot) wide antenna at Canberra Deep Space Communications Complex near Canberra, Australia.
4. This year we celebrated the Deep Space Network’s 60th anniversary. This international array of antennas located at three complexes in California, Spain, and Australia allow us to communicate with spacecraft at the Moon and beyond. Learn more about the Deep Space Network’s legacy and future advancements.
An illustration of the LunaNet architecture. LunaNet will bring internet-like services to the Moon.
5. We are bringing humans to the Moon with Artemis missions. During expeditions, astronauts exploring the surface are going to need internet-like capabilities to talk to mission control, understand their routes, and ensure overall safety. The space comm and nav group is working with international partners and commercial companies to develop LunaNet, and in 2023, the team released Draft LunaNet Specification Version 5, furthering development.

The High-Rate Delay Tolerant Networking node launched to the International Space Station in November and will act as a high-speed path for data.
6. In addition to laser communications, ILLUMA-T on the International Space Station is also demonstrating high-rate delay/disruption tolerant networking (HDTN). The networking node is showcasing a high-speed data path and a store-and-forward technique. HDTN ensures data reaches its final destination and isn’t lost on its path due to a disruption or delay, which are frequent in the space environment.
The Communications Services Project (CSP) partners with commercial industry to provide networking options for future spaceflight missions.
7. The space comm and nav team is embracing the growing aerospace industry by partnering with commercial companies to provide multiple networking options for science and exploration missions. Throughout 2023, our commercialization groups engaged with over 110 companies through events, one-on-one meetings, forums, conferences, and more. Over the next decade, NASA plans to transition near-Earth services from government assets to commercial infrastructure.
Middle and high school students solve a coding experiment during NASA's Office of STEM Engagement App Development Challenge.
8. Every year, NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement sponsors the App Development Challenge, wherein middle and high school students must solve a coding challenge. This year, student groups coded an application to visualize the Moon’s South Pole region and display information for navigating the Moon’s surface. Our space communications and navigation experts judged and interviewed students about their projects and the top teams visited NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston!

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket soars upward after liftoff at the pad at 3:27 a.m. EDT on Saturday, Aug. 26, from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A in Florida carrying NASA’s SpaceX Crew-7 crew members to the International Space Station. Aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft are NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Andreas Mogensen, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov.
9. The Near Space Network supported 19 launches in 2023! Launches included Commercial Crew flights to the International Space Station, science mission launches like XRISM and the SuperBIT balloon, and many more. Once in orbit, these satellites use Near Space Network antennas and relays to send their critical data to Earth. In 2023, the Near Space Network provided over 10 million minutes of communications support to missions in space.
Here’s to another year connecting Earth and space.

Pro Wrestling Illustrated: April 2024
WOMAN OF THE YEAR
RHEA RIPLEY
50%
WHETHER IT WAS in the Women’s division, her own faction, or WWE as a whole, Rhea Ripley asserted her dominance throughout 2023 in a manner that made her the runaway winner in reader votes for this category.
In a year that saw her take the #1 spot in our expanded “Women’s 250” ranking, “The Nightmare” haunted the dreams of opponents and firmly established herself as one of the biggest stars in the business, regardless of gender.
At the Royal Rumble, the Australian powerhouse outlasted 29 other women on her way to winning the Women’s Rumble match and secured a title shot at WrestleMania, where “The Eradicator” put an end to the championship reign of Charlotte Flair (a bout that was voted 2023 Match of the Year by PWI readers). The victory signaled a role-reversal of the encounter the two had on the same stage in 2020–and showed just how far Ripley had come since then.
For the remainder of the year, “Mami” held court over much of Monday Night Raw, along with a vise-like grip on the Women’s World heavyweight title belt (a prize she has yet to relinquish).
[2023 WWE, INC. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED]
TONI STORM 7%
With two AEW Women’s World championship runs to her name this year, it would be reasonable to say that Toni Storm was recognized here for her in-ring accomplishments. That may not be totally accurate, however. For as good as the Australian ace was in the ring, it’s fair to say that we have never witnessed a Toni Storm like the one we did in 2023. Since premiering her “Timeless” persona, Storm has been pure box office, elevating herself to starlet status. While she will be hurt not to win the top spot here, being the best supporting actress isn’t so bad.
BIANCA BELAIR 6%
Still one of the finest pure athletes in all of wrestling, Bianca bagged enough votes to be placed in this category for a third year in a row. Sure, 2023 wasn’t quite as good for “he EST” as the prior year. But our readers were still impressed enough by her work that Belair gave Toni Storm a stiff challenge for the top runner-up spot. It’s easy to forget that the former world champ is still only seven years into her career. And with championship reigns and big wins on the scorecard yet again, 2023 was another impressive one for her CV.
ATHENA 5%
“The Fallen Goddess” rose above her competition all year … and gained the respect of many of our readers in the process. There are many who felt that Athena was the best thing about Ring of Honor in 2023. Despite her bluster, she more than backed up that sentiment each time she stepped into the ring. Her stellar ROH Women’s World title reign put the Texan at the forefront of women’s wrestling and landed her the #6 spot on our “Women’s 250” ranking. Based on the feedback of PWI readers, perhaps she ought to have placed even higher.
32% VOTES FOR OTHERS
Some of the top vote-getters who did not capture a runner-up spot include: Masha Slamovich, Kamille, Trinity

2023 BL/GL/QL Round-Up Post
I thought for posterity I'd post a reflection on everything I watched that completed in 2023. For me, that means anything that started in 2022 but the last episode was in 2023 is on this list, but anything that will still be airing after 31 December 2023 11:59 my time (EST) is not on this list, even if the bulk of the show did air in 2023.
A few stats:
110 discrete pieces of content (series/films)
clocking in at est. 600 hours of NEW BL/GL content only
from 9 different countries (Cambodia [1], Philippines [3], Hong Kong [1], Japan [18], Korea [19], Myanmar [1], Taiwan [6], Thailand [56], Vietnam [7])
~50% of the content I watched on this list is from Thailand
~85% of my content was on YouTube [40%], GaGaOoLaLa [23%] and iQIYI [21%].
[Note that this year a lot of older GMMTV shows moved off of YouTube and onto Viki so if you're looking at these stats to decide what to pay for, this won't account for that.]
This doesn't include re-watches or catching up on old shows [e.g. I re-watched Love Sick, My Ride the Series, Semantic Error, ITSAY/IPYTM, Our Dating Sim at least 3 times lol, and anything with a s2 I re-watched s1 to prep, among others, watched Fujoshi Ukkari Gei no Kokuru (2019) for the first time] or non-QL [e.g. Heartstopper s2, Our Flag Means Death s2, Taskmaster s. 15 & 16, Uncanny Counter s2, One Piece s1, etc.] but does include films as well as shows, though I don't count special episodes separately (so Wedding Plan counts once, though I watched both the show and the special).
I hope you all appreciate that with this much content, and with my general brand of being unable to make decisions, I really struggled to narrow down a top 10 list. What follows is the best I could do lol
Top 20 Shows I'd Recommend From This Year:
Moonlight Chicken
Our Dating Sim
Bed Friend
The Eighth Sense
La Pluie
Sing My Crush
Tokyo in April Is...
Wedding Plan
Laws of Attraction
I Cannot Reach You
I Feel You Linger in the Air
What Did You Eat Yesterday S2
I Became the Lead in a BL Drama
If It's With You
Love in Translation
Our Dining Table
My Personal Weatherman
My Beautiful Man: Eternal
My School President
Be My Favorite
+10 I liked but I would only recommend with caveats:
Love Class 2
The New Employee [for the Rainbow Rice Cakes]
Let's Eat Together Aki and Haru
Never Let Me Go
Kiseki: Dear to Me
Unintentional Love Story
The Day I Loved You
End of the World with You
A Breeze of Love
Jack O'Frost
Bonus: Not a BL but worth calling out:
One Room Angel
Midnight Museum
Grand Guignol
The Warp Effect
Sadly, of the GLs that aired this year, I wouldn't recommend any of them. The best one was Show Me Love, which was not actually good but had very gorgeous women and a LOT of flirting.
The other huge thing that happened this year was that I stopped lurking! Thanks specifically to @lurkingshan and @bengiyo demanding everyone start talking about La Pluie, because they got me to post my first meta post. And because I started actually talking to people, I started making actual friends, and participated in organizing things like the Be My Favorite clown checkpoint for ep 11. I also disappeared a month because of life, and am still catching up on everything I intended to write this year. But it's been really rewarding finding this corner of tumblr with likeminded people who like good shows, like to think about these shows, and who are interested in talking about them in a way that's insightful and respectful.
It's been a long time since I felt comfortable enough participating actively in a fandom, and I just want to say to everyone I've interacted with this year: Thank you!
Full list under the cut for anyone curious! [Mostly in order it aired but may be slightly off].
Love Bill
Director Who Buys Me Dinner, The
Star Always Follow You, The
Cutie Pie 2 You
Between Us the Series (Hemp Rope)

The 1,000th F-35 Has Been Built
Delays with a key upgrade program mean Lockheed Martin has yet to deliver the 1,000th F-35 and others to their customers.
Tyler RogowayPUBLISHED Jan 10, 2024 1:28 PM EST
Lockheed Martin has built the 1,000th F-35, but delays with a key upgrade program mean it is parked away awaiting delivery.
A newly produced F-35 is seen in its primer colors in Fort Worth, Texas. Lockheed Martin capture
Lockheed Martin has hit a huge milestone in F-35 Joint Strike Fighter production. However, that accomplishment, while outstanding, is complicated by the ongoing saga surrounding the development and testing of Tech Refresh-3 (TR-3) hardware configuration. TR-3 underpins the F-35's future capabilities, known collectively as Block 4. Delays with TR-3 mean that F-35s are being parked and not delivered after they are constructed, waiting for these features. So is the case for the 1,000th F-35.
Lockheed Martin

We asked Lockheed Martin about the status of deliveries of F-35s, including the 1,000th example, and they gave us the following statement:
"We continue to produce F-35s at rate and have jets in various stages of the final production process. Once these jets receive the necessary TR-3 hardware and final TR-3 software is available, they will continue through the production process, including parking, until they are delivered."
Regardless, hitting the 1,000 mark is really an incredible accomplishment for the controversial program that has struggled significantly at times.
As of early January, the F-35 enterprise has amassed over 773,000 flying hours, trained over 2,280 pilots and 15,400 maintainers across 14 flying services around the world, and flown more than 469,000 total sorties. There are now 32 bases and 11 ships hosting or capable of hosting F-35 units. As of now, there are a whopping 17 countries participating in the international Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program.

Current and expected future F-35 operating bases/ships. Lockheed Martin
Demand for the F-35 has never been higher. Recent geopolitical events and shifting threats have spiked orders. For newer customers or existing ones that are ordering more jets, getting TR-3 jets and potentially Block 4 capabilities will be of significant value. They will be receiving a far more mature aircraft and one with drastically expanded capabilities and growth potential than past versions.
Block 4 will include many new features, including much-expanded processing power, new displays, enhanced cooling, new EOTS and DAS electro-optical sensors, and a slew of additional weapons that will really unlock the F-35's potential. Above all else, the jet's new radar and electronic warfare suite should give it its biggest boost. The electronic warfare aspect alone is the biggest advantage Block 4 will bring, according to the Air Combat Command's top uniformed officer.

Some of the unclassified upgrades are expected to be part of Block 4. The exact configuration is not publicly disclosed just yet. DOD
The current issue is that F-35s need a new hardware backbone and associated baseline software, collectively called TR-3, to handle the various demands of the Block 4 upgrades. TR-3 has and continues to suffer numerous delays in its development.
The increasing age of the F-35 program's current fleet of test jets and other limitations in existing test infrastructure, especially with regard to software labs on the ground, have compounded these issues. The first flight of an F-35 test jet with a version of the TR-3 backbone took place in January 2023 and efforts are underway to create a dedicated TR-3 test force with a total of six Joint Strike Fighters.

A US Air Force F-35A test jet. USAF
As of December, the expectation is that the development of TR-3 will be finished sometime between April and June of this year, according to Defense News. If that schedule holds, this work be done between a year and 18 months later than expected.
The delays have also translated into significant added costs for the F-35 program. At a House Armed Services Committee hearing in December, Representative Donald Norcross, a Democrat from New Jersey, said that problems with TR-3 had led to a $1 billion cost overrun. The full estimated cost of the F-35 program though the end of its expected lifecycle in the 2070s is currently pegged around around $1.7 trillion, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

USAF
At the House Armed Services Committee hearing last month, Air Force Lt. Gen. Michael Schmidt, the current head of the F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO), seemed less than optimistic about the likelihood of there being no further TR-3 delays.
"Relative to the stability issues that were that we're seeing, we are working through them. ... I wish I had all of the solutions in place that prove to me that when I do something in the lab, it's going to show up that way in the air," Schmidt told the assembled legislators. "We have a number of fixes addressing the stability challenges. We will get to a stable, capable, maintainable airplane here."
However, "the data tells me it will be in the middle of spring, but I would have had a more positive answer six months ago ... so I don't have a super solid 'I can guarantee you this date,'" he added.
After the completion of the development of the TR-3 package, these improvements will still need to be integrated into existing jets. The F-35 program is separately pursuing upgrades to the Pratt & Whitney F135 engines that power all variants of the Joint Strike Fighter, as well as power and thermal management systems, which will also be critical for enabling Block 4 capabilities. The issues surrounding the F135 engine have become a very hot topic of debate.
youtube
In the meantime, the U.S. military has made clear that it will not accept any new F-35s until the TR-3 issues are ironed out. This is ostensibly because the necessary checkout flights cannot be conducted on the jets until the hardware and its core software work reliably.
So, for at least another few months, the 1,000th F-35, and many others, are set to stay parked away waiting for work on the core TR-3 upgrades to be finished.

Stalemate at Busan global plastics treaty meet
Not surprisingly, the negotiations at the fifth – and what was supposed to be the final – session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to arrive at a legally binding global plastics treaty (INC-5) ended in a stalemate with stakeholders deciding to meet again for INC 5.2 in 2025 for further talks.
More than 3,300 delegates – including members representing more than 170 nations and observers from more than 440 organizations – met in Busan in South Korea from 25 November to 1 December in mainly closed-door negotiations. INC-5 follows INC-1 in Punta del Este in November 2022, INC-2 in Paris in June 2023, INC-3 in Nairobi in November 2023, and INC-4 in Ottawa in April 2024.
According to reports and updates Packaging South Asia has been receiving from various sources in Busan, a sticking point has been the demand from anti-pollution campaigners to cut virgin plastic polymer production, plastic production and to regulate hazardous chemicals – which oil-and gas-producing countries such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have been vehemently opposing.
India clearly stated its inability to support any measures to regulate the production of primary plastic polymers, saying, “It has larger implications in respect of the right to development of member states.”
However, India admitted the hazards of plastic pollution and listed the measures it has taken to address the problem – a single-use plastic ban, an EPR regime on plastic packaging, a push for sustainable packaging, and reducing the use of virgin material. “Our approach to finalize the draft instrument should be based on mutual trust, cooperation, and the spirit of consensus,” India stated.
Campaigners say there was a lack of transparency in the negotiations, which they allege were held hostage by petro-states and like-minded lobbies. Sources closely observing the negotiations in Busan said the INC chair and member states were locked in closed-door talks while important stakeholders such as frontline communities, waste-pickers, and the Indigenous Peoples nations and groups were left out in the cold.
According to one report, more than 220 fossil fuel and chemical industry lobbyists registered for INC-5, the largest single group at the talks, which dwarfed every other delegation.
“The lack of transparency in these discussions sparked outrage, with many stakeholders questioning the legitimacy of decisions being made in closed-door settings. These decisions, after all, directly impact the lives of billions, particularly those in vulnerable communities. Yet, their voices were excluded in a process that seemed to prioritize political expediency over accountability,” writes Siddharth Ghanshyam Singh of Delhi’s Centre for Science and Environment in Down to Earth.
The text, seen by Packaging South Asia, defines terms such as plastic, plastic pollution, and plastic waste as well as refers to increasing levels of plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, and the serious environmental and human health problems it causes.
Civil society groups, however, say the chair’s text falls short of expectations on core obligations such as plastic production and object to referring to a reduction target as “aspirational.” They also say the chair’s text has stripped away systematic controls on toxic chemicals and chemicals of concern.
Rahyang Nusantara, deputy director, Dietplastik Indonesia & Convenor of Asia Reuse Consortium, says the current text missed the opportunity to advance real solutions. The prospective agreement must have a dedicated article with ambitious reuse targets financed by a new and dedicated financial mechanism to enable the establishment, operations and scaling up of non-plastic reuse and repair systems, Nusantara says. "This is key for a safe and toxic-free just transition away from plastics to truly end plastic pollution."
According to Joan Marc Simon, founder of Zero Waste Europe, the good news is that the campaigners have succeeded in shifting the conversation to addressing the entire plastics lifecycle. "From pointing fingers at the victims of plastic pollution 10 years ago, the world is now discussing a treaty that goes to the root causes of plastic pollution," Simon said in a Linkedin post, adding the slow progress is because of the 'delay and derail' tactics by oil and plastic producing countries.
Ana Rocha, Global Plastics policy director of the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) – a worldwide alliance of more than 1,000 grassroots groups, non-governmental organizations, and individuals in over 90 countries – sums up the mood at the talks, “...The ambitious majority needs to do whatever it takes to get these negotiations back on track and reclaim the spirit of multilateralism. Now is not the time for timidity. It is time to fight for our collective survival.”
Explaining the delay in the negotiations, Inger Andersen, executive director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), says there is, “Persisting divergence in critical areas, and more time is needed for these areas to be addressed.”
While there is no denying that plastic and allied products are present in almost every sector be it packaging, pharma, FMCG, electrical and electronic equipment, or household products, and play an important role in our lives – the impact of plastic pollution on the environment, human health, and the socio-economic burden it causes, is too big to ignore. As such there is an urgent need for all stakeholders to find a way out of one of the biggest crises of our times. Else INC 5.2 might just lead to INC 5.3 and so on…

I sent in this ask back around March 18-20 (can't keep track of what day exactly) with the following points.
I decided to go back and look at Gen's posts going back a few years maybe Dec 2020 (another strange hunch) like a month or so ago. Do note this was before I started following his mom and sister out of curiosity, and realized a few things. Jared used to like her stuff a whole lot more, maybe miss a few weeks worth of stuff here and there but then start liking multiple posts in a row... until about Dec 2022. After that, Jared's likes on her posts greatly declined to become more or less a handful and is still the same today (will now go months between liking her posts now).
Posts liked by Jared in 2022 (41 posts total)
Notes: Jared was in a car accident sometime during either the third week of April or late in the second week of April. Notably so, Gen made no posts about it on Instagram but had a "♥" post on Twitter about it

Posts liked by Jared in 2023 (9 posts total)
Notes: The Writers strike began 5/2/2023 and ended 9/27/2023; the actors strike began 7/14/2023 and ended 11/9/2023.

Posts liked by Jared in 2024 (13 posts total)
Notes: I sent this ask to that blogger back around March 18-20. See how the likes were more sparingly up until the 22nd of April this year?
[2/16/2024],[4/22/2024],[4/23/2024],[4/30/2024],[5/1/2024],[5/3/2024],[5/7/2024],[5/9/2024 NOT a like but "a comment "LEGO 🦶🏻💀 survivor!!!"],[5/15/2024],[5/20/2024],[6/4/2024],[6/11/2024],[6/12/2024],[6/21/2024],
Onto the red flags I've noticed that tell me there might be some family stuff going on here. Jared's sister follows Jared on Instagram but guess who does NOT? His mom. Yes, you read that right. Jared's mom doesn't follow him on Instagram. I also found his dad follows Jared on Facebook who by the way doesn't follow Gen.
Oh how funny, his mother suddenly started following him not too long after I submitted this ask around March 18 or so. Gotta love it when these people give away the fact they clearly read the blogs, ya know?
