Jeronica Endgame Analysis

I wrote this on Reddit and have been meaning to bring it over here. But commenting on @elizacinnamon's tumblr is what convinced me to do it. Buckle up because it's a long one!

Okay so, looking at all of the easter eggs in the episode, to me, it's heavily coded that Betty and Archie do end up together and that Jughead and Veronica end up together. The first thing that should be acknowledge is that everything in this episode is done with a purpose. They couldn't definitively say who Archie ended up with because Archie comics is predicated on the unanswered question of "Betty or Veronica?" so they had to make things "ambiguous" so people could come to their own conclusions.

When we hear of Veronica's life, Jughead says that she was known for her "impeccable taste" and "produced some of the most iconic movies of our time". So, right there, that's huge. That's a lot of heavy lifting. While he is complimentary and sensitive to everyone else's ending, the way he describes Veronica's life is just more. Take Fangs, he doesn't describe "Pixie Girl" as a "timeless" or "iconic" song. He just says that Midge and their daughter were taken care of and that his gold record will hang as long as there is a Riverdale High. He doesn't mention if Kevin or Clay won any awards for their work, but he says that Veronica won two Oscars. He goes out of his way to note the importance of Veronica's achievements.

The scene at The Babylonium is where I've found the most clues to their shared future. Jughead says "I always loved this theater". He doesn't say that about any of the other places they visit. Throughout the show, they regularly used characters to represent overarching themes. For example, Archie = Riverdale. I take Jughead's declaration to be a euphemism for Veronica. It's not that farfetched to believe that they fell in love while in high school. They were together for a year and a half before graduation. So, in the scene, he says "I always loved this theater. But it had a good run." At this time, in reality, both Veronica and Jughead have passed. Their run ended. He then lifts the seat and HIS CROWN is drawn under it! Why? This is a quick visual cue that he and Veronica are connected. If the Babylonium is a physical representation of Veronica (which is what the episode frames it as) then she essentially has a Jughead tattoo on her (a bit of a dramatic way of putting it lol). But, also this is not the first time something like that is in the show. In season 1 and 2, Betty wears a sweater with a yellow three pronged crown. It's universally recognized as Jughead's crown (she wears it on his birthday and in the Heather's musical episode). So, he makes his statement and BAM Veronica appears. Every time we see a character that isn't in the "relived day", it is a clip of them in the future. Veronica is the only character to essentially be an apparition. They didn't have to include her, but they did. And seeing as it's Narrator!Jughead (the real/angel Jughead is in the Pop's in the Sweet Hereafter, and the show literally ends with typewriter sounds) telling Betty all of this, Veronica's appearance can be taken as a clue that she is ever present in his mind/life.

When we see her in her office, she has four "The Comet" posters behind her. Hanging posters of the movies you made is very common. What isn't common is that one franchise has such a place of honor, so that means it's incredibly significant to her. Her clothing is in the style of the early 80s (the creators had an idea to bring everyone through time with each episode but it wasn't feasible so this is kind of a nod to that. Cheryl is seen in the late 60s, Betty in the 70s, and Veronica is the early 80s). We know that Jughead adapted The Comet into a comic book, and he was the one that introduced her to WEB DuBois' people. The artwork of the posters is the same as the comic he created. Making movies at that time was very time-consuming. Also, franchises like that were not common. The whole "Saga", "Trilogy", and "Universe" collections of today were not done to the same extent back then. So, not only was "The Comet" incredibly popular (because it got four movies) but it spanned over a large time frame (again, she still has the posters up decades after graduation via her clothing style), meaning that there was a consistent dialogue between Jughead and Veronica.

Outside of the Babylonium is a poster for "The Big Sleep" (It's also on the Marquis). This is a direct reference to the episode "The Red Dahlia" (3x14) where Veronica enlists Jughead's help. It is one of the main "Jeronica" episodes of the series. In that episode he says that he'll be her "Philip Marlowe". In The Big Sleep, Philip Marlowe is the main character played by Humphrey Bogart. In the same episode he says "Nice hat... Bacall." Lauren Bacall is the female lead of The Big Sleep. Bogart and Bacall were a huge draw for audiences. They were a power couple of their day (and they were also married... hint hint lol). They were the Bennifer and Brangelina first.

Now, moving onto Jughead. He doesn't talk much about himself. Everything that Betty says can literally be read on screen in his obituary. There are two main takeaways from this scene. The first is he barely talks about himself. When he does, he focuses on talking about his career and there's no mention of his personal life. This is a parallel to Veronica's description. He only describes her career and not her personal life. What is also a parallel is that in his summary of Veronica's life he says that she was known for "taking risks on young, raw talent" ie Jughead. Jughead tells Betty that he "put all of his eggs in one basket". That turn of phrase is to mean that you did the riskiest thing possible. When Betty asks if he ever regrets not getting circled he says 'sometimes'. It's a very ambiguous statement. BH shippers will say that he is talking about Betty. But his relationship with Betty ended in high school (both times) and were never rekindled later in life. It doesn't have to be that regrets not marrying Veronica, but it can be taken that way.

The second is on the artist easel in the Madhouse offices. There is a picture of Veronica. It is not a photograph it is the canonical comic book portrait of Veronica (Pep Comics IS Archie Comics). And it is smack dab in the middle of the easel. This is another parallel to Veronica's future. She has "The Comet" posters and he has her portrait. Remember, his first comic book line that he created was "Veronica: The Teenage Witch". So this is a clue that he has used Veronica's likeness IN his magazine for most, if not all of, the run. There's no picture of Betty or Archie. Why still have Veronica's portrait and use her likeness if they weren't still connected in real life?

Now we come to the final scene. So, throughout all of Riverdale (with a few exceptions) the milkshakes that the core four drink all correspond to their hair color. Betty = Vanilla, Archie = Strawberry, Jughead and Veronica = Chocolate (double chocolate to be specific - which can be extrapolated to represent them. It's a stretch but it can be made). In the final moments, we see that this formula has been flipped. When Betty sits in the booth, Archie is drinking a Vanilla milkshake and he hands Betty a strawberry one noting it's "her favorite". What are Jughead and Veronica drinking? Double chocolate milkshakes. If in the Barchie Endgame theory Strawberry being Betty's "favorite" is to mean "Archie" then we can apply that same logic to Jughead and Veronica. Then there is their seating arrangement. The girls on one side and the boys on the other. Betty is sitting directly in front of Archie and Veronica is sitting directly in front of Jughead. Again, because they had to keep the "Who will Archie choose?" answer ambiguous they use this blocking technique to show the pairings without the pair sitting right next to each other. (Couples either sit next to each other or across from one another.)

That is my analysis of the finale using clues to prove that Jughead and Veronica were "endgame". I hope you liked it! If you have any corroborating theories let me know!

Riverdale is... watchable again?

So.

I’ve watched the last two episodes of Riverdale (episodes 1 & 2 of season 7) because I am a proprietor and collector of unassuming, under the radar, not quite enemies to potential lovers ships like the dairs, the bamons, and of course, the jeronicas. Though I left Riverdale in my rearview mirror seasons ago, I can’t help but always have an eye out for how my favorite raven haired Riverdale duo is doing. Of course when the promo for season 7 dropped the hints that something may happen there, my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to tune in. And I was very pleasantly surprised!

This isn’t a post about Jeronica but instead about how much I enjoyed the first two episodes, the second one especially. I don’t fully understand how the cast got pushed back to the past as 30 year old teenagers despite that gorgeous black girl who’s name I forgot telling me last episode, it doesn’t really matter. Whatever genius in the writer’s room came up with that as the beginning of the end for the show was truly inspired. Going back to the basics is exactly what a show that got as outlandish as this one did needed.

The problems are simple and relatable, the villains aren’t otherworldly, it’s intolerant and judgmental adults inserting themselves and their views on a bunch of kids just trying to figure everything out. It’s the expectations the characters are putting on themselves as well as their own demons, not literal this time, that they have to fight. The 50′s dialogue is cheesy but in an endearing way, and the actors are really given something to work with.

Camila’s performance as Veronica as well as Madelaine’s performance as Cheryl in particular are really standing out to me. Instead of Veronica just being a bunch of quips and a large persona, she’s clearly holding onto a lot of insecurity and puts up a wall and puts on a mask that Camila allows genuine emotion to break through at the best times. And Madelaine does very similar work with Cheryl, which makes the moment of pure joy when she was dancing with Toni, for just a moment, all the more charming, and everything all the more sad in her last scene.

All of the actors are able to add dynamic to their characters that hasn’t really been there. I really appreciated Archie’s moments with his mom in regards to his father and how much weight that holds in every part of their lives. And KJ’s performance of Archie is so endearing I just wanna wrap him up in a blanket. I didn’t mention some other performances but everyone is really putting their all into this and I really appreciate it. Even the directing has been very dynamic, I really appreciate the use of mirrors and negative space in some of the shots. As I was watching I couldn’t help but feel like this should have been the show from the very, very beginning.

I know this won’t last, even in the last moments I was getting the sense of the spectacle and exaggeration that Riverdale is known for. As well as the overindulgence of unnecessary sex scenes that was hinted at for the next episode. And I know eventually things will reset and we will likely go back to what Riverdale is known for. But for the moment, I appreciate where they took the show, and if all I get before the chaos is just those two episodes, I’m glad I took the risk and was able to enjoy them.

hey, so... do you (by any chance) know if the '"open ending/multiple endings" ship' is just about who ARCHIE decides to be with, or if it will included more couples as well? like, i could have never predicted JV would have an actual chance, and less that they'd have the same chance as the (arguably) main/long-lasting ships of the show!? it's nothing short of amazing. how powerful they are.

Ah, I think some of those rumors/leaks turned out to be false. I think it's better to just rely on the bts and statements made from people on the show. Rumors tend to snowball into unrealistic statements the more they are spread. Unless they are giving a specific detail of a scene then I wouldn't put much faith in them being true. And keep in mind the style of the season, it's been very simplistic, low stakes, with quick resolutions to things. I don't think they are setting up some big complex ending or a cliffhanger that's gonna enrage everyone. It's gonna be something bitter sweet, lighthearted but not crammed with possible what-ifs to every ship that came before. But I'm sure there will be many winks and nudges of nostalgia in the last episode. Right now if I could guess I would say it's probably just left unclear if Betty and Archie figure things out, but to me it seems like they are wrapping up Jeronica as an endgame pairing. There is a lot of mirroring of their first episodes this season together, she's helping him create Archie Comics, and they have written them more like a secondary romantic plot and not really this big will-they-won't-they dramatic conclusion to be reached in the final episode. They're also the only "random pairing" that actually got back together. From the bts, we know they are riding in the backseat of the jalopy together, which I doubt they would be doing if they have another breakup. also just my opinion but it makes a lot of sense to me that the two people hurt the most by the cheating would find happiness and move on together? If they are talking about changing the future, Veronica and Jughead never being hurt has a really big impact on the story. In comparison, the two who cheated are figuring themselves out and not committing to anything or anyone because they are still working on themselves. Plus, if the last episode is from Betty's POV it will likely focus on whether or not she finally gets with Archie this season, because her story is kind of meandering but rolls back to her feelings for him the same way that they showed hints that Veronica never got over Jughead. The multiple endings thing came from what Madchen said: No, we don’t get out of the 1950s. So I guess that is a big spoiler. I will say you do experience the characters in three different… dimensions, that you get to see a lot of closures that are outside of the 1950s. I can tease it that way. I think that’s safe enough. So, make of that what you will. I'd say it's either you get to see what would happen if they went back to their own time, their future in the next few decades if they stay in the 50s, or maybe the afterlife and some kind of cycle beginning again once they all die and time resets for them. The word closure implies that it's not really open ended though. It's possible if they go back to the future the ships reconfigure, but they choose to stay in the 50s, so does that count as canon? But like, I think in one dimension or another Jeronica is endgame. It's very close to the end of the season to be stirring them up with more drama again. At the very least I believe they will graduate as a couple, which is a win for me. It's been very out of the blue that we got so much content, but I'm glad they left it till the end so they have more of a chance of being happy together!

will the sequel be heavy angst with a happy ending or angst for like the first few chapters then we actually get to see them happy? like am i gonna see established relationship scenes in new york??? bc gOOOD god the emotional turmoil tkof is i need some happy jeronica

also, is the sequel planned to be release soon after the last chap or? no pressure bc obviously you have a life outside this fic (unfortunately, not the same can be said about me) but i lowkey might combust if they don’t get a happy ending

lolololol girl I'm so sorry I'm honestly not even sure what happened with chapter eleven, I just like blacked out and threw in every angsty trope I could think of (but also, the fact that you've read it three times??? my heart???)

re: the sequel, definitely a different vibe! my reasoning for even doing a sequel instead of just tying up tkof as a standalone was that I felt like I couldn't organically give them the kind of ending I wanted for them amidst all that drama/turmoil, you know? like I could pull some Bonnie and Clyde run away to NYC-type ending, which is fun in that toxic/ride or die kind of way, but I feel like they deserve the chance to develop something healthier/less co-dependent than that. Veronica's in a really bad place in tkof, like she has pretty much no one and is weathering all this stress and trauma, and as much as Jughead wants to spare her from all of that I think she needs to rebuild/heal/find herself again on her own terms before she can genuinely be in something real. I like to think of tkof as a right person, wrong time kind of deal, and wbbs as their unlikely second chance at it.

re: the mood, definitely not the same angst-fest as tkof! the first few chapters are going to be heavy on the tension because things are left wildly unresolved, particularly to Jughead, and there's a lot of festering emotion/resentment that's been sublimated over five years that's now roiling right back up to the surface. that said, the setting/stakes/plot of wbbs is really different, like this is set in the NYC publishing world and there's no gang wars or serial killers or general riverdale bs heightening everything around them, so you get to see way more normal/everyday interactions for them, which is what I really wanted. this is their Dair era of bickering over manuscript edits and schmoozy cocktail hours and bookstore meet-and-greets and apartment life, and you also get to see just how unapologetically ambitious they both are (something that sets them apart from Betty and Archie and their white-picket-fence-small-town aspirations, I think), which is really fun. They have different ideas of success but they're both starving to prove themselves, and that initially presents as friction but eventually bonds them.

TLDR, the sequel is my way of giving them a chance to reconnect in a setting where they can finally breathe, and even though it starts off dicey, it definitely progresses into what I think you're looking for. I'm looking forward to playing into the idea that they'll both have convinced themselves what they had in tkof was this fluke of teenage hormones and life/death adrenaline, but then here they are, five years later, drawn to each other all over again. Just makes it feel a lot realer, you know?

ANYWAY, sorry for the wikipedia article I just wrote you oh my LORD. I'm not taking any kind of break between the last chapter and the sequel so should be along the same updating speed (which is admittedly abysmal I'm sorry 🙃). thanks so much for the message!

Jughead and Veronica were looking at each other SO MUCH in every scene they shared this episode. They were also stood or sat next to each other a lot. Not to mention the two being the only characters who chose not to burn their totems. Looks like we’re finally getting scenes of their mutual understanding and connection again!

They’ve always understood each other in a way Betty and Archie cannot. They are the brains to their brawn for sure.

(Funny note: Not that we would ever even get another kiss … but it is typical Riverdale that Veronica would get the power of a murderous kiss right before we get a Jeronica storyline episode😅)

at the end of the day, i get being a veronica fan and not a varchie fan, but the truth is that there just isn't, and there won't be, someone better for veronica than archie in canon.

think about it. chad could've been a nice guy that we cheer for, but he's not. jughead and veronica could've been friends or hinted as a romantic interest, but they weren't. tabitha and minerva are veronica-types and they're around jughead and cheryl because these writers never intended to write jeronica or cheronica. reggie is a villain now just so he can't be considered an option (not that he would be, anyway).

veronica interacted mostly with archie ever since coming back. because he's still supposed to be her biggest connection to riverdale. he's what made it feel like home.

and, i've seen some people saying they have nothing in common anymore, and i'm like why? he wants to save the town. it's keeping him sane. she wants to save the town. she thinks she has to give back bc of what hiram is doing. they believe in the same things, they share the same goal. saw people saying he wants a family. when has he said that? but even if it's true, isn't it clear that v just didn't want a family with chad because she's been unhappy?

veronica has said she wanted them to work together side by side so they could be in sync. and that's exactly what's happening?

say whatever you want, but archie is veronica's main love interest, and she is his. betty was never supposed to be it and the fandom tries to make it a slowburn narrative or whatever, but it was never supposed to. ba are about nostalgia and symbolism of innocence and safety. they never had any intention to make things differently. the sex scenes instead of a relationship were purely fanservice. they never intended to write them as more than friends, just tease it endlessly because of that "what if" or, in ras words, the "deep well between them*.

i've said it from the start that this show has a formula and will stick to it no matter what. riverdale isn't a teen drama. riverdale also isn't well written. things will be as rushed as possible in all fronts. like, it's the fifth season, and you guys are still surprised?

try watching riverdale as you would watch any other show based on comic books and you'll see what i mean. every ship and character has a theme. the show is about intergenerational cycles and these kids are representing their parents and grandparents and families, and they're trying to break these cycles by doing things differently, but doing things differently doesn't mean anything drastic, it's a Theme. i'm sorry if it's not compelling to some of you, but it's what the show has to offer. fanfic will always be better.

that being said, canon veronica and canon archie belong together, don't fool yourself into the thinking they don't. so if you want to be a veronica fan in the canon context, you have to start believing archie has and will love her more than he ever loved anyone else, despite previous wrongdoings.

NEW FIC BACKSTORY

Okay... so... This is an odd one (and a long one). This is kind of representative of my current "chaos era". It's a bit of a story and I put most of it in the A/N. But this was not a story I was ever intending to write. In fact, I am not part of the fandom (scandalous I know), and better yet, I had no idea that the show even existed until this past November... But apparently it was big! My excuse is that I was not of the demographic for it age wise. I think if it's age appropriate, anyone can watch anything. Rock on, man.

The backstory of this goes, I found out that my baby boy (cat) Jayne, had advanced kidney disease. For a brief and shining moment, I thought that he would beat the odds. Unfortunately, he was gone within two weeks. I held him as he passed. I have a little altar to him on my desk because he will never be forgotten. But, in my grief, I knew I needed to find an outlet. While I can't journal write (I absolutely hate it lol) I can tell stories. And I wanted to write something very dark and nihilistic that basically combined Peaky Blinders with Riverdale (Chaos Era).

So while I was falling down the Jeronica rabbit hole, I was gathering playlists and mashup videos to aid in my inspiration. But, the story refuse to appear. Instead, YouTube kept suggesting clips from a show I had never heard of. And the clips were OLD. Like from over 10 years ago. Though I said I was uninterested the recs kept coming. So I did ONE google search. I read ONE synopsis. I saw a cast list and I saw a timeline of a relationship. I thought that was all I needed. My brain said NOPE!

The timeline of this relationship ended every entry with "and they hugged". I was very confused about why this couple was only hugging. Then when I saw that the last episode was graduation I got a little more incensed. I had two puzzle pieces that didn't connect without a third. So, I asked around. I have friends that were of the age demographic at the time this was on. And every one of them said that 1.) they loved the show and 2.) It was a very Disney show. Now, there were some sporadic kisses here and there but I remember being that age in high school and while I wasn't some "light BDSM scene on the second time I ever had sex" (Looking at you Bughead in Riverdale...) I definitely did more than just hug my high school boyfriend.

Even though I wasn't satisfied with the answer I thought that was the end of it. My brain had other ideas. My brain told me that if I didn't write this story then I would never write again. Well. That's death to a creative type like me. While I never wrote every day or even put out stories consistently, I was still crafting stories in my head. I needed to be able to write. I was in a desperate state. So I thought "fine, I'll write 3000 words, delete it, and then write what I want."

I wrote 10,000 words in one sitting.

I wrote 50,000 words in 18 days.

I didn't watch the show until I was like 80% done with the fic.

It currently stands over 100,000 words.

If you've made it this far you're going "WHAT IS THE STORY?!"

Okay, I'll tell you. It turns out I was being recommended the clips because of an actor. This actor is Cole Sprouse. I knew him mostly as Ben Geller from Friends. I didn't know he had an actual career before Riverdale. I just thought he did something as a kid, and then came back after college. I was so wrong... So so so so so wrong...

If you guessed The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and The Suite Life on Deck you would be correct.

This massive story started as a way to explain why Cody and Bailey "only hugged". Turned into a love story. I made Zack not straight and married to a man with identical twin girls. London is a pediatric surgeon (and I still stand by that decision knowing what I know now). And Cody and Bailey are probably the least likable characters in the entire thing but they are relatable. This is a story of trying to find love after you discover the amount of abuse you went through. Why running from things is not ideal. And maybe, even when you live an outlandish life, there's some normalcy to discover. It's kind of dark, but there's a lot of humor. If you're not familiar with the show, I would just think of it as an original work. (I know, I know... certain death for a fanfic writer lol)

GORL, are you kidding me? never apologize, send me all the long tangents! this is such an amazing message, and actually kind of a relief because there's definitely still tension to wade through before I get to their romcom era 😂 smutty angst is a very apt description (and I'm glad as hell it's working for you because this is my first time attempting it tbh). I always assume people are going to get sick of it every chapter but there's something so fun about giving them that much unmanageable intensity, like they don't even know what to do with it, you know? it's also a cool exercise as a writer to try and toe the line between overwrought/indulgent and keeping things human/grounded - not sure I succeed, but it's taught me a lot about trying to pick my moments (and I think that's why those chapters have so many mood shifts - it's my attempt at reeling things in with an unexpected moment of humor or silliness). ANYWAY, enough about that, this means the world, and never say sorry for being friggin' lovely.

Aaaaaaahhhh I have so many thoughts!

Obviously I am very happy to see Jeronica stills!!!

Is this the obligatory core four/Jeronica moment we get in every episode 1 and finale of a Riverdale series? Yes. Does this make me sad because they should all interact and interlink storylines throughout the whole series? Obviously. That is too difficult for these shitty writers.

Anger about that aside, this is all we get so I will eat up every bite for all it’s worth.

Firstly, they’ve sat Jeronica/Barchie together again when they didn’t have to (probably to appease these fandoms without angering the main ship fandoms). Still it makes me happy.

Secondly, I love, love, LOVE that we get a Jeronica reading-glasses solidarity moment! They’re even wearing the same/similar colours! Eeuuuurrggh the matching aesthetic is maybe the most obvious parallel drawn between the two characters that we’ve had in while!

I am completely aware this doesn’t mean much because the writers make it up as they go along. Yet, I like to believe that this could foreshadow which sides the core four will fall in the ominous Season 6 ‘divide’ of characters that was teased by the poster caption. I mean they’re sat opposing each other, not in their main couplings and the similar visuals (of Veronica and Jughead at least) are very very on the nose.

Idk I just think that this whole scene set up feels like a particular choice. It would also make sense to have the main ships be separated by this ‘divide’ in order to provide a conflict for the plot of S6. Unfortunately for us the writing never makes sense therefore I will expect to be disappointed 😅

So those are my thoughts. Excited to finally have some Jeronica material though because we haven’t had ANY since the time jump.

Betty fake dates Jughead (with his consent, obvi) so she can learn how to be a good girlfriend for Archie (who has yet to ask her out and also isn’t even around at the moment).  Some quality pining in here and a good build and ahh, so sweet!  Every time I see it I’m like, “Oh, that’s right, I love this one!”
