can we just acknowledge how hard it is to focus on studying when the sun is shining, everyone's posting beach pics, and your brain is basically melting from the heat? summer studying feels almost criminal sometimes (like, isn't this when we're supposed to be recharging?), but even if you're taking summer classes, prepping for fall semester, or studying for standardized tests, i've got some helpful tips to help you stay on track without missing out on summer magic.

let's be honest about why summer studying feels so much harder:
your body literally craves sunlight and outdoor time
everyone else seems to be living their best vacation life
the heat makes focusing genuinely more difficult
your brain is trained to associate summer with freedom
seasonal rhythms are real, and summer is naturally more active and social
knowing this isn't just you being "lazy" is the first step! your brain isn't broken, it's just responding to both biological and social cues that say "put down the textbook and go outside!"

the key is working with summer energy, not against it:

Jamil Viper — Pansy, chestnut, & hydrangea

Pansy - What was it that ultimately sparked their obsession?
He first pays you mind when you’re partnered in a group project together. Some fickle, ambiguously posed essay prompt assigned by Trein. Jamil, as expected, pulls his weight. So as not to drag him down, you follow suit. It’s no question that he’s regarded as something of a jack-of-all-trades by his peers, a badge of versatility and all-encompassing talent he’s forcibly brandished with— so, under the assumption that this is true, you work hard not to impede your respective success, his above all.
But this particular assignment is to be completed in pairs of three. Jamil’s other work partner does not show for library meetings, does not reply to your texts, calls, or the inquiries you pose outside of their dorm. Jamil isn’t unaccustomed to the flaky vagrants that litter NRC’s student body, but this ordeal irks him regardless; this paper determines the bulk of his cumulative grade for the quarter, and he’s not too keen on being bogged down past the handicaps he’s already posed upon his academic success for Kalim’s sake.
Jamil’s grateful for you, though.
Trein assigned the lofty project on a particularly tedious week for Jamil, who had been wrought with exhaustion and chronic annoyance, with notably prominent eye bags, patience dwindling from sturdy kevlar rope to delicate snapping silk threads. He’d scarcely caught sleep, with only a few, fleeting hours to spare for himself (which were now dedicated to his essay portion). Kalim developed a daily taste for an incredibly complicated dish. Floyd misplaced Jamil’s practice sneakers atop the rafters for kicks. He forgot to clarify that his exam flash-cards were not for his dormleader to keep. He sliced his ring finger while dicing an onion. One night, he only got two hours of sleep, and woke up feeling like he’d been shot, waterboarded, and then shot again during the night.
He’d been especially cursed that week, and you’d done your share throughly and without complaint. Compromising and avid in your participation, you were almost eager to please him. You showed up early to meetings, and went insofar as to finish his study prep (even if it wasn’t to his standards) for another class when Jamil, quite startlingly, fell asleep atop of his reference materials, and did not wake for another half-hour. It wouldn’t usually have, but the considerate act genuinely warmed him. It threw him a bit off kilter. He even woke up relieved to find the finished paper, the smiley-faced sticky note that wished him ‘good luck!’ on his upcoming exam. It makes Jamil simultaneously unnerved and flustered, a combination that has his stomach turn uncomfortably. He doesn’t want to acknowledge it.
It was a small kindness, and might’ve been what kindled his initial interest in you, but it’s a kindness must be repeated for Jamil to acknowledge his interest in you. Even if he understands that the warmth in his chest is his mind and body’s positive reciprocal reaction to the minute sweetness you show him, he will not fully accept that what he is feeling is romantic interest, feeling quite put-out with how little it took to evoke such vulnerable intrigue.
Methodically planned or not, if you repeatedly display a semblance of care for Jamil, and act on it— helping him with cooking, pitching in and offering your services when Kalim saddles him with a seemingly insurmountable task, waving at him in the halls, smiling when he enters the room, demonstrating a baseline interest in his company alone; he’s quickly ensnared. You just have to hack away at him first. Jamil wants to feel wanted.
Chestnut - Would this yandere care about their darling’s past romantic relationships? If not, then why is that?
Disregarding the stabbing feeling he gets in his chest when you casually bring up a past fling of yours (even if the individual was nothing more than a middle school puppy-crush), no, Jamil swears he is not bothered by your past romantic ventures. No, he did not bristle when you spoke their name, and his face did not twist up when you giggled through a funny anecdote of a past failed date. He tells you to drop it, should you inquire further into his subtle bursts of jealousy, even if you’re just harmlessly teasing him for it. He won’t entertain it.
But if you were able to, if you could peel back his ribs and peer into his heart, you could observe how awfully is squeezes when presented with the reality that of course, he’s not your first and only love. Jamil, despite his efforts at concealing it, is incredibly possessive of you, jealous beyond what can reasonably be accepted as healthy and normal. Jealously seizes him, and, unfortunately, is provoked by both your past and present relationships, be they romantic or platonic. That he could not be there from the very beginning to monopolize you in your entirety, is a very irrational regret of his, one he’s almost ashamed to feel. His jealousy spirals into something fanatical and uncontrollable, and he loathes to feel it.
Jamil will persistently try to ignore it, to snip the dangerous buds of envy at the root, but it’s like some everlasting weed that’s even managed to creep into his love life, never abating. Always growing back, and somehow stronger than before. For as long as your attention is left open to the world, to anyone other than himself, it’s a weed that will fester and encompass him.
Hydrangea - How would this yandere react if their darling gave them affection? What is their internal thought process like?
Ultimately, Jamil isn’t expecting much physical affection from you. It’s not something he really craved in a relationship, nor does he ever long for it; he always believed himself a true independent, disregarding the ludicrous notion that an individual could truly grow starved from a lack of skin-on-skin contact. Jamil steadily maintains this belief— until you take the initiative. He’s always been one to take the first steps, to maneuver your relationship along the path he’s set for it; but he failed to take into account the obvious possibility of your genuine romantic reciprocation. Jamil doesn’t fluster too severely when you first shyly take his hand, not keen on displaying a modicum of softness to the prying eyes of his peers, namely Kalim. To publicly and positively reciprocate to your touch in front of Scarabia’s housewarden, to Jamil’s ward, would open a floodgate of issues for him. The flimsy barrier he’d built to negate Kalim’s already-immovable waves of physical affection would all but collapse, and his harassment would increase tenfold.
PDA is something Jamil kindly asks you to refrain from. He won’t completely discourage you from touching him, merely asking that it be on his own terms: acts of kissing and hugging and hand-holding are as privatized as he can manage. Especially within Kalim’s general vicinity.
In private, however, he does all he can to positively reinforce your affectionate behavior, for as long as you will willingly give it. If his coldness and general lack of reciprocation on campus ever has you fear for your relationship, he’ll work hard to make up for it behind closed doors. He ploys you into accepting his advances— in the privacy only his dorm room provides, he’ll add, barring you from lounging about Scarabia’s main social hub, its atrium. Jamil has you lie with him on his bed, pressed to his chest, urging you to doze off with a few choice words if you’re not already weathered from your day. Any light, intentional brushes of your hand to his will prompt him to cup yours, to intertwine your fingers, perhaps gripping them with too much pressure. Your shy pecks to Jamil’s cheek after a study-session will imminently lead to his tongue down your throat, a rapid progression that very faintly comes off as concerning. As too much, almost needy; but at the very least, you won’t be able to claim that he’s not paying attention to you.

how do you study mashallah
study guides, study groups, and office hours!!! im in my senior year of college and I've decided those are my Big Three when it comes to prepping for exams.
if a study guide is given to you by your prof....great! get out a new sheet and answer every single question/prompt/add info where needed. if a study guide isn't offered to you by your prof.....honestly that might be even better. making the study guide is a huge part of the studying process and honestly id say the most important part. go through all the slides, redo all the worksheets, reread your notes, and put together the highlights in one sheet. and that's like. the biggest part of your studying done. obviously go through the guide when needed but collecting the info helps cement it in your brain.
study groups!! they are sooooo important. others might have better grasps on specific content than you do and you might have better grasps on other content that they're struggling with....and teaching others is the greatest studying hack of all time. nothing cements a concept in my head more than going through it with someone else who needs a little help.
and office hours! anything that you're even slightly unsure about....go to office hours! profs often let slip information about what specifically might be on the exam, and might help guide your studying in other ways too. I've said it on here before but i am the biggest supporter of office hours. go to them! use them! this is what you're paying that insane amount of tuition for!

Spellbound - Harvey x Female Farmer
Chapter 2 - I... Like Harvey?
The farmer gets hurt pretty badly on the farm and is forced to confront the very person she's been avoiding since the Flower Dance.
The farm I’ve inherited has seen better days. I’ve been putting it off, but I’m finally removing the thick bramble growing on the outer fences. Machete in hand, I hack away at the unwanted roots and vines invading my property. My arm is starting to get tired and my aim is sloppy, but I’m almost done.
I have actually made so much money this week. Between the crop yield, the mining, the fishing, and the foraging, I’ve become an unstoppable force of productivity. And at this point, I’ll do anything to keep the Harvey gnat from buzzing around in my head.
Did you put a spell on me or something?
He’s been all I can think about if I’m not throwing myself into work. I haven’t even been able to go into town because I’m not sure how I’d feel seeing him again.
I hate the way it makes me feel and I’m embarrassed to admit it, but the Harvey I met at the Flower Dance was different in a good way.
I mean, he’s still a clutz and people pleaser, but he’s also intelligent, kind, gentle, and so damn tall. It’s been some time since someone treated me that way and it was… nice.
I guess the best way to describe how I feel is confused. A week ago, he made me cringe so hard. And now I think I… like him? I don’t know, I don’t even want to think about it.
So, here I am, hacking away at some vines.
The afternoon sun is beating down pretty hard. I’m a sweaty mess, and I can feel the handle of the machete slipping from my grip.
I spot my next victim, a branch thicker than my arm, and swing down with all my might. The machete doesn’t go all the way through, and when I try to pull it out, it won't budge.
I try to saw it back and forth and it gives a bit, so I try harder.
I’m starting to get frustrated, so I get rougher and rougher.
One moment, I’m aggressively shaking the stuck machete, the next I’m running towards the farmhouse with a bloodied palm.
When I get inside, I rush over to the sink and rinse my wound under cold water, trying not to panic. The cut is deep and about 3 inches long.
I wrap it in a towel and start to apply pressure. I’ve got no other choice but to haul ass to the clinic for some stitches.
By the time I bust through the door of the clinic, I’m starting to feel light-headed, between the heat and losing blood.
I make eye contact with Harvey who is reading a book behind the front desk of the clinic, his eyes widen and his lips part at the sight of me. I must look like a mess.
He rushes over to me with no hesitation.
“Bino, you’re bleeding!” he exclaims and supports my body by the shoulders, “Come with me, I need to take a look at that right now.”
He brings me into an exam room and lifts me onto the table in a single quick motion. Even in the midst of pain and panic, my heart flutters at his strength and gentile.
Harvey takes my injured hand into his and lifts the dirty dishtowel away to reveal the severity of my cut. He begins to clean it, sending stinging pain deep into my hand that makes me hiss in response.
“I’m sorry, I need to clean it before injecting an anesthetic.”
I take a quick breath at the mention of a needle.
“Harvey,” I say in a quivering voice.
“Yes?”
“I’m scared of needles.”
He looks up at me with my hand still resting in his.
“I promise, I’ll talk you through it and go slow,” he gives me a reassuring smile, “It’ll be over before you know it.”
“Okay,” is all I can manage.
“You’re doing great so far, take deep breaths,” he places some gauze over my bloody palm, “Apply pressure, I’m going to prep the anesthetic.”
I do as I’m told and Harvey turns to the tray table with an array of sterile tools, including a fresh syringe. I gulp down my fear and watch as he inserts the syringe into the tip of a small bottle.
His movements are quick and precise. The syringe fills with a clear liquid and when he finishes, he slowly turns towards me. My heart starts to pump faster.
“Deep breaths,” he reminds me.
I shakily inhale through my nose and exhale through my mouth, “Okay, I’m ready.”
He nods and slowly approaches me with the needle and I have to fight all instinct to move away.
He gently lifts my hand and discards the gauze that is now soaked in blood. Harvey slowly brings the needle toward my hand and counts down from three before inserting the it into my hand.
My breathing gets faster until he pulls the needle out and places a fresh piece of gauze over the cut.
“Good job,” he says.
But I know the worst is yet to come. It was time to mentally prepare for the stitches.
I usually have to watch medical procedures, so I know what’s coming. But today I turned away while Harvey stitched up the 3-inch long gash in my hand.
The pain was minimal, thanks to the anesthetic, but by the time he finished, my hand was sewn up and sore.
Now that the urgency and adrenaline have passed, I’m starting to feel the intense effects of blood loss. Everything is moving slowly and I’m realizing now that we’ve been alone together this entire time…
“How did you hurt yourself?” he asks while gently wrapping my hand in a bandage.
There’s a concern in his voice.
“I was cutting some vines and my hand…” I glance up and meet his furrowed gaze, “Slipped.”
“You should be more careful,” he says raising an eyebrow, “Were you wearing gloves?”
I consider lying to him for a brief moment, but I’m curious to see his reaction if tell him the truth.
“I wasn’t.”
He sighs.
“Again, please take better care of yourself,” the worry in his voice tickles something inside me.
“Yeah, actually, my machete got stuck and I-”
“Your machete?!” he interrupts.
My cheeks are aching from holding back a big grin. He has to be egging me on.
“You could have lost a finger!” he continues.
“But I didn’t,” I say cheekily.
He sighs and shakes his head as he pulls off his latex gloves that are tight on his large hands. He looks a little defeated.
“Sorry…” I say starting to feel a little guilty, “I’ve been throwing myself into work lately, I’ll be more careful from now on.”
“Good,” he says with narrow eyes, “I noticed you haven’t been around town lately.”
He what?
Harvey clears his throat.
“Gloves,” he says when I don’t respond, “From now on.”
“Okay,” I reply obediently.
“You lost a lot of blood, Bino,” he starts again, “How are you feeling?”
Not well enough to go home yet.
Is what I think to myself.
And I’m starting to wonder why I was avoiding him in the first place.
“I feel really woozy,” I exaggerate.
“Then let’s get you in a bed so you can rest,” he says offering me a hand to help me off the table.
I don't hesitate to give him my good hand. I’m reminded of the flower dance when pulled me onto the dance floor.
Now, he’s supporting me by the waist to walk me towards an empty bed in the hospital room down the hall.
“Pardon me,” he says slightly flushed.
I could get used to this.
After he gets me into a bed, Harvey excuses himself to go grab me something to eat and drink. I lay back and let my head sink into the pillow.
I close my eyes, not intending to fall asleep, just to rest for a moment, but my body has other plans. I slip into a deep, dreamless sleep before I can even try to fight it.
When I open my eyes again, I see Harvey sitting in a chair at my bedside. He’s reading the same book from when I first came into the clinic.
I glance at the clock, I’ve been asleep for nearly an hour.
“You’re up, how are you feeling?” he says, closing his book and setting it aside.
“Slightly less terrible,” my voice is raspy and my throat is dry, “Were you there the whole time?”
“Well…” he hesitates, “I didn’t want to be too far in case you woke up and needed me.”
I could torture him a bit more by asking why he chose to sit so close to the bed but I let him off the hook for the time being.
I sit up in bed, using my good hand to prop myself up, and my head starts to spin a bit.
“Careful now,” he says placing a hand on my arm to balance me, “Don’t fall over the edge.”
When I’ve steadied myself, he lets go and rolls a tray table over. There’s a sandwich with a side of red apple slices on a plate and a glass of water. I could really get used to this.
“I want you to eat something before you go home.”
“Thank you.”
“How’s the pain?”
“It aches a little.”
“Some Ibuprofen will help with that,” he says scribbling something into the notebook he always keeps in the pocket of his white coat, “I’ll get a prescription ready for you while you eat, I’ll be right back.”
He slips out of the room and I’m alone with the beeping machines and the ham sandwich in front of me.
I scarf it down in record time and chug the water like a chaser. I was so hungry I thought my stomach was going to cave in.
He comes back with a pill bottle and some spare bandages.
“Alright,” he starts, “Meds for pain, follow the instructions on the bottle, and some extra bandages.”
“Thank you, Dr. Harvey,” I tease.
“It’s all part of the job,” he says with that unprofessional smile and a wink that shocks me to my core, “Let’s check your vitals and get you on your way, Bino.”
How am I supposed to just function normally after that? He’s so full of contradictions. It would be easier if he just picked one, clutz or rogue.
“Could you sit on the edge so I can check your blood pressure?”
“Right,” I say snapping out of it.
He places the blood pressure reader around my arm and squeezes the pump in a rhythm. The muscles in his hand flex and relax as he pumps the reader full of air and I can almost hear my heart pounding in my ears.
When it comes to his work, there’s nothing awkward or clumsy about his movements. He’s so meticulous and delicate with his hands as he takes his measurements.
The tearing of the velcro interrupts my train of thought as Harvey removes the blood pressure reader from my arm.
“Looks good, now I’m going to listen to your heart.”
Oh no…
He swiftly takes the stethoscope from around his neck and pops the ends into his ears.
He moves in close and places the stethoscope to my chest. I swear I can feel his body heat radiating off of him because of how close we are. A hoard of butterflies has been released in my chest.
I bravely glance at his face. His brows are furrowed and his eyes are focused as he listens to my heartbeat.
He shifts the position of his stethoscope a few times before he moves it to my back.
“Deep breaths please.”
I do as I’m told.
“Hmm,” he pulls the ends of the stethoscope out of his ears and replaces it around his neck, “Your pulse is high, are you feeling alright?”
Is he stupid?
“I think I’m just nervous,” is all I can manage in response.
“Sorry, I don’t mean to make you nervous,” he smiles cheekily at me, “Don’t worry, we’re almost done here.”
He finishes the check-up with my temperature which is quick and uneventful.
“I’m going to let you leave now but you have to promise not to overdo it at work anymore,” he says as he wraps things up, “I like running into you, just not like this.”
I get goosebumps.
“I think I’m starting to like running into you too…”
Harvey stops what he’s doing and looks me right in the eye. Almost like he’s about to say something.
“I want…” he pauses, “I want you back in a week to see how everything has healed up.”
He breaks eye contact and is now flipping through the papers on his clipboard with a weird expression on his face. My chest tenses up.
“Besides that, you’re free to go,” Harvey says as he starts getting up, his tone has gone serious and impersonal.
And now there’s a pit in my stomach. I haven’t been reading him wrong, have I? Why is he suddenly setting this weird boundary?
I’m tempted to try something else, maybe asking him for drinks or coffee, but the words get stuck in my throat. Instead, I follow him to the front door of the clinic.
“Do you feel well enough to walk yourself home?”
There’s another pang in my chest. I think I was expecting him to walk with me just as he did after the dance.
“I do, thanks,” is all I can manage before we share a couple of pathetic ‘goodbyes’ and I head down the gravel path toward my farm.
When I walk through the door of the farmhouse, I feel the weight of the day suddenly land itself on my shoulders. I make my way to the bathroom for a well-deserved shower and I’m met with a disheveled version of myself in the mirror above the sink.
There’s dirt and blood on my face and in my hair. I probably reek of sweat too.
Suddenly I’m slightly less confused at Harvey’s reaction. Not only was I too forward, but I look like this right now.
A hot tear falls down my cheek. I hate this feeling.
I force myself into the shower and continue to let the tears fall as I scrub myself clean of any lingering impressions he left on me.
Once I’m dressed and have taken my Ibuprofen, I find myself too exhausted to think about it any further. I land in bed and fall asleep until the late morning.

Crunch Time Exam Prep
My girl @seliniteheart requested: “How to prepare for exams 3-4 weeks ahead while not going insane because they're the hardest exams in the entire major” and this seems time-sensitive, so I gotchu girly! I hope I got this to you in time!!
Scheduling
Break your time up effectively so that you can get as much information crammed into your brain as possible
Break it down also so thay you repeat the information on a good interval. Maybe, if there’s three weeks to go, repeat question x every monday and info y every tuesday, and do a practise paper every friday?
If applicable, figure out what’s most likely to be on the exam and focus on that
Focus also on your weak points. Don’t waste energy on the things you know and are good at, give them a go over but focus on the stuff you don’t like
Schedule productive breaks- if you’ve been elbows down on your desk for a bit and want to keep the study energy up but need a break, take a break for some kinaesthetic learning, for example.
Take 0% breaks- in other words, take some breaks to do absolutely nothing, where even thinking about the exam is BANNED. Life-Hack- inform other people of this strategy so that you don’t get your mum coming into your room like “how’s the studying going?” when you’re mid-meditation, or to be watching your comfort YouTuber when your bestie is like “girl, I’m so stressed for this exam on Monday!” This time is for 0 brain power, no stress.
Sorry to the girlies who also have to consider jobs and other priorities, but see if you can work with your employers, the aunt you babysit for etc to reduce your time, or if you can blend your studies. Eg maybe you’re studying for a maths exam, which means helping your little cousin with maths homework keeps you in the right mindset to study for an hour when you get home. Or maybe your retail job is cool and lets you study in the breakroom, or even take your textbook to the till when its quiet.
If your bosses aren’t cool, unfortunately, you just have to make the most of spare time, but as long as you’re maximising your study time to work for you, you can do this!
Breaks
As mentioned above, schedule in breaks that keep the vibes up, and breaks that turn your brain OFF completely. Set yourself school hours eg 9-3 or even 9-5. Doesn’t matter, just pick a time in the evening when that’s it OVER and no more studying.
Make sure to go for water regularly, and eat at regular times- and DO NOT take your notes with you!
Taking Care of Yourself
Make your study experience as painless as possible by giving yourself a good environment. If you like the library, sequester yourself into a cozy corner; if you like a café, same deal. If you’re at home, make sure to keep your space tidy and organised.
I’m gonna mention going to get water again. Go get some right now, actually. Where I live, the hottest days of the year are exam season and back-to-school season. Christmas exams are a whole separate nightmare but you’ll still sweat through your fifteen million layers! Go hydrate!
If you’re hunched over your desk, you need to stretch. Find YouTube video you like, especcially if you’re not that familir with stretching. And go for a walk at least once a day, weather permitting.
If you’re a kinaesthetic learner especially, do a proper cooldown after exercising! That’s true anyway, but especially if you’re adding your brain as a muscle to train.
Actually, maybe we should all be doing warm-ups and cool downs… go over your favourite aspects of your subject in a quick five minutes at the start and end of your sessions!
The Actual Studying
Aka, the hard bit. Its so much mor fun to just organise your space, gather all your pens, and set up your instagramable study session, avoiding the actual “study” bit- God knows that’s me. How you actually study is so different person to person and subject to subject, so I’m going to give tips that are hopefully applicable to a lot of people, but may not all work for everyone!
Cater to your own preferences: I sometimes listen to classical music when I study, I sometimes listen to numetal, so what makes sense to you.
If you need to, block out all distractions: do not disturb on your phone, even turn off your wifi if you can.
If you’re like me and need distractions eg adhd: try pacing to shed any excess energy, listen to loud music (lol like my numetal ha), if possible, listen to your notes aloud while doing something else (I used to play solitaire in class). I find that if you have something else that you can focus on such as a pretty menial/repetitive game like solitaire, or a song with lyrics, your brain gives more energy to that so that instead of a hundred million thoughts distracting you, its only one extra thing.
Read your notes aloud to yourself and walk around your room- hit all three learning styles at once
Write and re-write things, condense it down, do past papers, and just keep repeating the same information until you’re sleep-talk in just the quadratic formula and/or you’re even dreaming in French.

Last minute life hack
I learned the best way to score well with just one day prep is by learning the answer scheme.
Do practise questions and rewrite or review the answers provided.
While taking your exam, make sure you attempt everything. Even if you don't know the answer, just write down whatever comes to mind regarding the question. Before you realise it, you would have got the target required.
Honestly, I'm counting on better planning for my next exams so I'm prepared way ahead of time.
With that being said, here's what I did today:
1. Completed Biology portions
2. Completed an entire chapter on chemistry
Didn't get to do a lot but thankfully I'll be able to complete the portions tomorrow morning.

SO-24: Whatever Happened to Poor John?
If there's a lot of engagement on this, this post is liable to get real long, beware before you expand.
No art, but I am working on it and I will add it retroactively. The eyes are letting me draw, just real slow.

Woo! We just got back from a 2 night stay on a houseboat, it was definitely trying to kill us (I'll do a post on the main blog later, I have so many scary pictures), and we loved it anyway. So I'm distracted, but I did manage to unwind a little. No wifi, only phones! But I think I got pretty much everything formatted OK before we left. We'll see!
Now it's time to back up and see what happened to John after he smacked into the Elysium Inn's glass door and escaped into the wild! His friends picked him up and they're ready to do more terrorism together! ...Well, maybe in a little bit. They all need a break to unwind, too, but they're not gonna get it. Jenny will put her big brother back together as best she can, but she's going to be a little irritated with Erik and Co. and everyone else who allowed him to break down that badly.
And we end on a cliffhanger! The "real spy" is suddenly revealed! Unfortunately, that'll be all you get for about two months, unless I can put something cool together for our birthday in April. It's doubtful.
The spouse and I are about to have the most stressful two months of the year (probably... hopefully). He's got to prep for his CPA exam, which is 8+ hours of testing over multiple days. They will require him to do two practice cases a week, timed, the longest of which will take 5 hours. We expect adding that much fake accountant business on top of his actual job and everything else we gotta do will fry his brain. And there's the added stress that the test costs thousands of dollars. If the unlikely happens and he fails this time, taking it again will hurt. We can swing it, but it'll hurt.
It looks like his current employer has his back, though. The capitalist exploitation is different up here! A promotion to a better-paying position that will qualify for the experience he needs to be a full CPA (he needs 2.5 years) is in the works. If he gets it, he can stay with them, and they'll pick up his school costs. His dream job is still doing actual, meaningful work for a nonprofit of some kind, but he can hack this one for another 2.5 years if necessary. As long as we can still afford food and housing! I think we can. The whole immigration thing seems a bit backed up, but when we're allowed to own property, we can afford a floating house like that houseboat we stayed at. Not exactly like it, dear god no, but similar. That may be what our future holds.
But we gotta make it to June, first! I have no idea what my internet life will look like or how often you'll see me, but I'll try to get some stuff done. Hopefully, I can come back with another six, illustrated, as soon as the stress abates. Thank you for your patience until then!

TOEFL Experience. Part III
Hello, everybody! I'm really glad you're still here :) Today I'm going to talk about the unofficial websites for complex (all sections) TOEFL preparation.
TST prep
Their Emergency Course (premium package) was my first purchase on my way to a pretty good TOEFL score. However, unfortunately, it is not the last or the best. Let me explain. Among the benefits I can name:
Structured and short information about all the content of the TOEFL test (paid, however, can be found in their YouTube videos for free);
Templates for speaking and writing sections for basic and advanced levels;
Practice tests with answers and their explanations (some of them in open access on YouTube in old videos);
Comprehensible design of the website and cool colors;
Examples of Q1 for the speaking section (for free);
Newsletters with special hacks and news from ETS (for free)
Josh's charisma (can be found everywhere :)). However, if you use this website with the materials from their YouTube channel, you will quickly realize that you've wasted your money. First, throughout all the videos, Josh McPhearson repeats that it's OK to pass the same test more than one time after, for example, two weeks. And that was a trap! I passed approximately two or three tests (in sum from the website and from the YouTube channel), trained some specific types of questions from reading and listening in the separate section on their website, and then I simply couldn't find the completely unfamiliar test, despite the fact that I was promised to have 6 complete practice tests in my package. So, the limited number of practice tests was an outrageous fact for me because it seemed like some of them were open-access on YouTube. Moreover, I think that this emergency course in general doesn't give you much more information about the test than their YouTube videos. So, basically, I paid mostly for templates, and that wasn't a rational decision, even if a 50% discount was taken into account. Don't be enchanted and blinded like me; use only their free materials. I didn't try their group classes and evaluations, but Emergency Course is 100% not worth your time and money.
2. Best My Test
Since I needed more practice and more tests, I started to search for other complex solutions where I could train all the TOEFL sections. I found this website, and after reading some articles about it, I began a free trial. It gives you an opportunity to pass the sample test, which is a shortened version of an actual test. After trying it, I was on cloud nine because it was exactly the thing that I was looking for.
First and foremost, the experience is not the same but really similar to the official TOEFL test. You can see the instructions, the buttons, the interface for recording your voice, the way the text in reading and questions to it are placed, the writing interface, which is also close to reality, and the most important is the timer. That was the core reason why I decided to pay for this.
Another benefit is, obviously, the availability of a huge number of practice tests with recorded statistics of your success in every section and question type (for reading and listening).
The theoretical materials are also included. It is especially useful when you see that some type of question is your weakness based on the statistics of your success. You catch it, jump into the corresponding lesson, learn some strategies, and train.
Templates and explanations for speaking and writing can be found. Moreover, the evaluations of your speaking and writing by humans and AI are included in the Custom and Premium packages. From my own experience, AI evaluations are pretty accurate, as they rated my speaking at 21 points and I gained 22. And writing reviews from experts was also full of insights and powerful advice. +/- There are also vocabulary and grammar materials, but I didn't have much time, so for me, these materials were uneffective. And finally, maybe for some readers, the textual form of theoretical material will not be comfortable, so I consider this aspect of Best My Test a disadvantage. However, they already made videos for certain lessons. Overall, Best My Test was a treasure for me, without any doubt. I regret that I found it too late (it was 2 weeks before my exam).
As you can see, these websites cause lots of strong feelings in me; however, I appreciate both of them because I have learned not only how to take TOEFL but also have seen a real picture of our world. The beautiful, loud, and charismatic is often empty. And the real treasure is often much cheaper and kept silent. Stay tunned :)
