i am aware that this is likely not a new take at all, and i'm not like, claiming it as mine, but i never had the chance to have this opinion (or hear other ppl have this opinion) on a public forum before, so i just want to take this opportunity to say to another person, possibly for the first time with the exception of mb my mother, who is no longer here to agree with me, that "existence" came out when i was 8 years old, i watched it live, and literally the day i watched it i remember thinking to myself "why did they have a boy named william? they should have had a girl named samantha. OF COURSE they should have had a girl named samantha," like it felt so obvious to me

and tho i couldn't rly articulate it this clearly at the time, my little muddy 8 year old thought process was that the entire story of the xfiles starts with samantha, right? mulder has his beliefs bc samantha was taken; he says so in the very first episode. the whole reason he even thinks aliens are real to begin with is bc of samantha. the person he spent his whole life searching for was samantha. he MET SCULLY bc of samantha. samantha is the thread that ties the whole story together, so then how beautiful--how narratively perfect--would it have been to tie THEIR story--their love story (bc xfiles is, at the end of the day, a love story, fight me) up with a bow, where the beginning starts with samantha getting lost, and then ends with samantha there in their arms, finally found, just in a different iteration. (instead of naming the baby after mulder's dad who he doesn't even like? or scully's dad. or scully's brother. or mulder's middle name, which is after his father ik, but still, why are there so many fucking williams??)

like, imagine it. rly sit there and take a moment to imagine how the end scene in "existence" would have gone if mulder had said, "what are you going to name her," and scully had said, "samantha"

not only does it get the "ding ding ding, you're the dad!" point across, but how fucking Touched would mulder have been to have the woman he loves--the PERSON he loves--more than anything on earth honor the sister who took up so much of his soul for so long? who always will take up part of his soul, just in a healthier way. it would be scully saying, "we know she's gone from this world now, but she's not gone from our hearts" emphasis on OUR hearts, bc mulder's pain is scully's pain; mulder's quests are scully's quests. she never met her sister-in-law (they're married, fight me), and will never have the chance, but by naming their child after her, she would be saying, "i love her anyway. i love her because you love her, and because anyone you love deserves my love as well, bc we are intertwined at our core. our fundamental values, our suffering, our joy, it is felt in us both concurrently, bc i am your person, and you are mine, and together we made a whole other person who is a literal representation of our combined selves, and we are going to call her SAMANTHA, bc that little girl you watched get stolen from you however many decades ago has been the pillar that has kept us going as a team for the last eight years"

or maybe it would have been even simpler than that. maybe she would just be saying, "your sister is IMPORTANT, mulder, even in death, and her memory isn't held only by you. it is unrelenting, and preserved forever in our child"

i wanted that scene. i wanted to feel the heaviness of mulder's grief mixed with his elation and gratitude and love. i appreciate william for who he was in the scheme of things, but that moment in the bedroom, with their baby between them, shouldn't have been lessened for me bc they chose a name that made me pause and go "his dad was named william? oh yeah! forgot about that guy, it's been a few YEARS since we saw much of him, and what we did see of him wasn't like... awesome. but sure, name your baby that ig, if you must"

that scene should have hit so much harder, and if that baby had been a samantha? it could have hit like nothing ever has, and for all the mishaps that show took after that (and there were MANY), i think the thing i will always have the most resentment for is the fact that i felt robbed of something that would have meant so much to me as a viewer who had followed their journey from the start (or, well, almost start. i was born the year it came out, so i didn't start watching until 1998, when my brain came online, but i'd seen the past stuff at least)

anyway! that's all to say, 8 year old me was salty as hell about that, and ykno what? she was RIGHT and should have been able to say it. but, again, 2001, 8 years old, not old enough to participate in fandom, so that thought has just festered and rotted away in my brain like a piece of old, putrid meat. but! finally i can give my 8 year old self some catharsis by letting her bitch and bitch and bitch to her heart's content about how "existence" should have been the series finale, and how that baby should have been a girl named samantha, and how i climbed onto that hill 23 years ago, and how i will die there with my heels dug down deep

ty, internet, for coming to my extremely overdue tedtalk. somewhere in the past there is a small child (who definitely shouldn't have been allowed to watch xfiles as young as she did, but what can you do?) finally has a weight off of her chest. it's just a tv show, and in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter, but also, it's a tv show that i grew up with in my formative and unfortunately very traumatic years, and it genuinely feels like a loved one who has always been there to comfort me, and so yeah, it doesn't "matter," but the truth is, it Matters so incredibly much

MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE its genuinely so good an super foundational to post 2000s sitcoms it kinda shook up the established sitcom format w some unconventional directing and also by portraying a low-class family where most sitcoms up to that point portrayed upper-middle class families. its also um. funny. one of the few shows where i feel like im really fond of every main character

UM HONESTLY. I KINDA ONLY KNOW ABT BLACKJACK but i hear baccarat is fun for ppl who like skill based card games.. also u can do tarot readings w regular card decks which i think is very cool 👍

ILL TELL U HOW TO COUNT CARDS im so glad ppl r reading my abt me page AND I LOVE TALKING ABT IT ITS ACTUALLY VERY COOL OK SO

BASICALLY rules 4 black jack are easy. ur ignoring colors and shapes on ur cards (this isnt easy i know..) those are all numbers now. the ones that have numbers on them r the number they are and the ace is either 1 or 11 depending on which is better for u (or the dealer) and all the other cards without numbers (king queen jack) are 10. ur goal is to get a higher number than the dealer without going over 21. u and the dealer both start with two cards and u can only see one of the dealers cards and u make ur decisions based on that. dealer has the advantage (except when they dont. ill explain this later) because since the dealer doesnt do anything until u bust or stand it makes it so that ur at risk of busting first (since u cant bust with just two cards). u can hit (ask for another card) or stand (no more cards im all done) or u can double (ask for another card AND double ur bet bcz ur so sure this next card is gonna be a good one) AND u can also split if both ur cards are the same. then u have two hands, which means u can bust on one and keep playing on the other. also sometimes u can get a natural blackjack. this is awesome and important but u dont do anything to make it happen exactly it just happens when u get an ace and a 10 as ur first two cards and then u get a 3:2 payout 👍

OK SO THATS JUST REGULAR BLACKJACK most ppl when playing regular blackjack are just following their heart when they make choices so their odds are dogshit but for every hand u have and card the dealer has there's actually a right answer. heres a link to a chart with all the right answers. memorizing this is called basic strategy 👍 and its actually a lot harder than actually counting cards but counting cards is useless without it. there are some cool little lines and phrases that make memorizing it easier. it isnt terribly hard though i think, they still make some middle schoolers memorize the periodic table and this is basically just like. three of those. ppl who play blackjack for funzies regularly are looking at absolutely trash odds like a lot of the time only slightly better than a slot machine but if ur playing with perfect basic strategy ur odds go up to abt 49.5 percent. but ur STILL losing more than ur winning so thats where actual card counting comes in. so theres more than one card counting method but the one i know is hi-lo where u just keep a "running count" of ur current odds for winning by looking at the cards that are coming out of the deck (its actually a shoe, bcz its more than one deck) and using that to determine what kind of cards are left. 10 and ace decrease the count by 1, 6 and below increase the count by one, and 7 8 and 9 dont change the count. a high number means theres more good cards in the deck (because more bad cards have already been dealt) and a low number means theres more bad cards in the deck bcz the good cards have already been dealt. there are some variants to basic strategy based on the current count (and also based on a few rule variants and shoe size) but basically. higher count = bet more. lower count = get outta there. if ur playing w more ppl at ur table ur seeing more cards per turn an ur count will be more accurate 👍whats pretty interesting is that the thing thats giving u the advantage over the dealer despite the dealer not being able to bust before you is that you get 3:2 on natural blackjacks. so ur basically relying on the fact that youll just win automatically sometimes to have ur advantage over the dealer and are just mitigating loses the rest of the time when this doesnt happen.

SO THATS IT its actually not super hard u could probably get pretty good at it in just a few months or even weeks. the only thing is that when ur using basic strategy perfectly and counting cards perfectly ur odds only go up to 50.5 percent which. GREAT ur beating the house and playing for long enough should eventually mean more money over time but ur still only averaging more money over time. and just like how ppl working with dogshit odds occasionally win big, u working with slightly better than 50/50 odds can occasionally lose big and a lot. also if ur betting small, ur winning small. so in order to really make a worthwhile profit playing blackjack u kinda already have to have a lotta money. like if ur making $100 worth of bets an hour ur only averaging abt a dollar profit per hour. to be averaging (not making. AVERAGING) california minimum wage you'd have to be betting like $1600 an hour. so it isnt quite the get rich quick scheme that a lotta people think it is but it IS pretty fun and is kind of the only part of gambling i enjoy. probability is cool 👍

Hey! I told you about a terrible dating experience before ("are you feminist?" guy when I split the check after he ignored me for a game the whole time on his phone?) and now I have a positive one!

Met this dude on St. Patty's Day for a quick coffee date and it went so well! we've had like 2 dates per week since then! We've exchanged small gifts ("this made me think of you" type) I think we really vibe and are clicking, no conversation on what we're doing yet (no convo like are we bf/gf?) but we did agree to delete Hinge (where we met) by the end of the third date

ONLY NEGATIVE is I'm an immigrant here in the USA and frankly feel like any day now my non-citizen (but still legal as of rn) status will be revoked and/or worst-case scenario I need to leave the country, and this awesome dude couldn't come at a worst time! I've not discussed my status with him since it's very personal and I fear it'll scare and make him jump ship. my dates have not been going great im v tired of them but we move. if it cheers you up (it probably won't) I will share w u my most recent one who was some Danish start-up owner who made interesting conversation and was obviously doing very well for himself.... so i asked him something like well how have you done all this by ur relatively young age it's very impressive! and he said well basically I didn't really get out at all since i graduated like i just worked when other ppl were socialising. and i was like oh wow ok. and then he said his father, a successful politician, was the same and had basically neglected him and his brothers for his work. and he'd died a few years ago and so Hinge guy had asked him on his death bed if he regretted not spending more time w his family, devoting his whole life to his career, and Hinge guy's dad said: nope i regret nothing i'd do it all again. and i was like oh!! wow!! and he was like yes and he's my hero, i aspire to be just like him and on my death bed i hope to look back on my life as he did and regret nothing, even if i work all hours to get there, and actually i usually wouldn't have left the office by this time (it was like 9PM) but you're cute so i thought well ok i'll make an exception just today haha! and i sat there and i thought.... this guy said he wants children??? like hello who is supposed to be looking after those 24/7 while he works himself to an early grave?? me?? and i realised i could see myself getting divorced from this man sooner than I could see myself marrying him. and so the next day he texted like hey that was fun shall we meet up next week! and i said ohhhh..... i think maybe i am not ready for dating just now goodbyeee and i unmatched him x

oh, this is a fun question! there's a lot of ways i could explain this, but i'll do my best

i think the biggest thing i can state is that there's nothing wrong with being a bit of a pervert as long as you're still normal about it, and keep it in these kind of spaces :P a LOT of things i draw are inspired by stuff that's not even remotely horny but i decided to make it so. hell, for one example, everything about the parviII mpreg saga on this blog is all from that ONE episode where they joke the demon they summoned is their child. be silly with it!!! take some dumb bit of dialogue and create some kinky scenario!

secondly, other artists are your friend! no idea is totally original, and there's nothing wrong with being inspired by other people in the community. as long as you're not directly copying anyone and giving credit where credit is due.

for example...

when i was sketching the stronghold dig down art (which, as mentioned above, is inspired by something not even horny) i pulled up this piece to see how another artist already did this concept. obviously i came up with my own pose and vibe, but it certainly helped my motivation! the dialogue behind this doodle was from this art, except with the roles reversed. you get what I'm trying to say here... see what others have done before and put your own spin on it!

id highly recommend my twitter following list to see who i get the most inspiration from. everyone's lovely, but i'll shoutout lewdlemage who has an amazing comic style, and sapphicbump with great anatomy to take note of, both who i'm a patreon of. (really, id subscribe to all of the people i follow if i could afford it, lots of awesome ppl...)

people who upload IRL pictures and videos in the community are also great for reference! i basically always skim chubbybunnytgirl's pics when i'm drawing pearI. there was also an account who was a perfect reference for my pa.rvis, but i think they deleted :( there's a few others in the back of my head, but everyones taste is different, so i'll leave it at that.

lastly, and of course this isn't just for NSFW art, but i'm just a big music person when it comes to both art and writing. ever notice most of my fics are a song title or lyrics? never underestimate the power of a good jam session!

Hmm since you asked bout the aging(and that’s a little complicated) I’ll answer that first. So I can’t go into too much detail cuz that will spoilers for a comic and some other art that will explain everything! ..Maybe😂 But I will say this. Cj unlocked his Ninpo when he was 10 he was fine, he was aging normally. Till a certain incident happened when he was 11 and well.. we all know what happened next, freshly baked trauma and he aged a couple years forward overnight plus some extra long term injuries (that I will go into later).

The good news is that as long as he doesn’t push himself like that again he will be aging mostly linearly again? But the damage has alr been done 😅. But anyways, after the incident, he never pushed himself like that again. One, cuz the Hamato fam would never allow it and Two, cuz the recovery period is so long/bad (cuz Cj is no master and worse he’s a literal child unlike Mikey who was in his early 20s when the cursed Aging started) no one can afford for him to be knocked out of commission like that again. It makes him wayy too vulnerable.

Post-incident, at his worst he has only aged a few days forward but cuz that’s so small no one except Master Michelangelo (cuz he’s a mystic master and cuz he’s also in the same boat) can tell the difference. Plus it’s so negligible it doesn’t technically matter.

But long story short, pulling himself tgt from that incident physically and mentally took loooonnng time haha. But as you can see even now it still leaves its scars haha and probably always will.

As for any other tidbits? Oh gosh where do I start ? Ahh there is just so much to say! Ok update wise I’m actually working a PMV for Healer!Cj so if I go quiet for a while that’s why. Idk how long it’s gonna take but I’m excited to show some sneak peaks along the way lol. This is my first time doing something like this so here’s to hoping it goes well!

Lore wise: although Cj does have a subway car in the lair. Once he gets more settled in he actually bounces around quite a bit. Boy was not meant to stay in one place for too long. While he does spent most of the week at the lair cuz the underground is familiar too him, he will spend 3-4 days crashing on the couch at April/Casey’s apartment. And on a rare blue moon he’ll give Draxum a heart attack 😂 by breaking into his apartment and sleeping on that old man’s couch. After a while it becomes their own little inside joke 😂. Draxum tries Cj-proof his apartment using mystic or otherwise and Cj makes it a point to still try and sneak in.

And the surprise of no one. In this Au, Uncle Mi is Cj’s favourite uncle. Sometimes second pesudo dad. But mostly on accident by a very sleep deprived Cj.

I have plans for P!Casey to eventually develop Ninpo a few years down the line. But I can’t think of any powers for her so if ya’ll got any suggestions pls fire away.

And oh P!Leo is gonna permanently need a leg brace. Sometimes on rlly rlly bad days, he will need to use a crutch (not that he ever does cuz he’s wayy to stubborn) but you get the picture.

Raph’s eye is permanently gone, Donnie and his shell will heal but bro will have chronic back pain for life plus certain parts of his shell where the tendrils dug into the thickest are now numb cuz ya know, nerve damage from being literally ripped out the technodrone. Mikey will need to wear compression gloves but his shaking gets significantly better over time. So he draw but he still needs to every two months or so he can get pretty bad flareups which are jsut Oof.

Good news is April is fine aside from a broken arm during the invasion that will heal. Splinter was surprisingly not that badly injured just a few pulled muscles here and there. And Cj is Obvi fine too aside from a minor concussion that he got prior to time traveling. Which to him was basically nothing. The reactions by everyone else was hilarious and a major culture shock for Cj. Turns out his apocalypse pain scale was drastically different to their normal not apocalypse pain scale.

It was hilarious the gang were like: “you’ve running around taking care of us a lot. Are you good?”

Cj: “yup all fine. Just a few bumps and scrapes”

8 Hours later..

Cj: “It looks like everyone’s settled? Great. I’ll go grab painkillers for my concussion now.”

Them: “I THOUGHT YOU SAID YOU WERE GOOD!?”

I was very grown up today in interacting with one of my coworkers. I was able to actively pinpoint that 99% of my animosity towards this coworker comes from other coworkers venting about him to me. I've interacted with this person fewer than 10x in the 3+ years I've worked at this job, and today's interactions, because I chose to do it with patience and kindness, were So much better.

Some (infuriating) backstory.

This person's regular m.o. with other employees present (as vented to me many times before and again today for 25 minutes), is to drag a chair to the front of the store and sit there until his shift is over. There is no cleaning, pricing, book tidying, donation processing, or other employee duties completed (except cashing out and running up to ppl to tell them info they didn't ask for, which is not an employee duty) unless he is yelled at. He also has been known to kick everyone out of the store if he's working alone and he has to use the bathroom. He will lock the door so that nobody can get in while he's in there. (Reported by customers.)

This results in a lot of frustration towards him, because he's being paid the same amount of money hourly as all the people who have to pick up his slack. Our company is paying this man to babysit the front counter and do nothing else. He is an actively annoying hindrance to everyone.

On my way to work this morning on the bus, knowing I would have to work with him for a few hours today, I made the executive decision in my own brain to try and get along with him. Mind you, this is the person I had a problem with right at the beginning who would maliciously misgender me because he was jealous that I had one more shift a week than he did. But that was three plus years ago.

So I'm standing at the counter this morning, and he drags his chair up and sits down in it. I look at him in full incredulity, and I ask him what he's doing here so early. He's only supposed to be around long enough to cover my lunch break, and I only started working 32 minutes ago. He says that he's not even clocked in yet, he's just sitting out here, to which I reply that if he's not clocked in he has absolutely no business being up at the front counter. Because he is not an employee right now, he is merely a body in the building, and he's fully in the way.

He goes upstairs, grumpy, but without much complaint.

Shortly afterwards, I also go upstairs because there's a lull in the customer base, and I have not had any caffeine yet. To the Keurig! While I'm up there he asks me to give him information about things going on in the store that he needs to know about. I ask him if he's clocked in yet. He says no. So then I attempted to say to him something along the lines of, "if you're not clocked in, you're not expected to be working yet. So just chill until you're clocked in. Nothing is urgent here."

Unfortunately, he is used to getting his own way right now and if I didn't answer the question to his satisfaction he doesn't want to hear anything else that I have to say. So he fully screams at me, using my name and trying to claim that he's going through a lot and that I NEED TO tell him what he wants to know. He's really shitty about it, angrily demanding that I tell him what he asked me about. I attempted three times to say those words to him, and he literally screeched at me like an angry toddler all three times and interrupted me before I got more than four words out. Finally, I just tilted my head at him slightly like an inquisitive animal, and I calmly said, "I don't care what your problems are, none of that matters to to this interaction in the slightest. You know what would be awesome is if you let me finish my one sentence."

He finally took a breath, made a go-ahead gesture with his hand, so I was able to say to him that he didn't need to worry about it until he was clocked in. To which he blinked and said, "Oh okay." Victory 2.

We had a cart of books that sparked no joy in me (meaning books that were dry concepts and boring and old and slightly yellow so I didn't really have any excitement in picking them up and putting them on our shelves), and as I was putting away some vinyl records in the media room he asked me about the cart. I told him that the books were gross and I didn't want to touch them, but that had nothing to do with their sellability, it was just my personal preference against boring yellow books. So he went and started putting books away.

I finished up with the media room, and started helping him clear out the cart. When it was about halfway done, I took the other empty cart to the back to do some donation processing. I also took the price gun with me so I could price them all in the back and then they're just ready to put away when i brought them out. He still hadn't sat down yet. Victory 3.

When I came back out about half an hour later, the other cart was empty. Hurray! And he wasn't even sitting down. He was up and tidying books, talking to customers, and then he came over to help me with the new cart. I pointed out that all the cookbooks were on one side in the same spot, but not to worry about those because we had to weed out the cookbook section as we had way too many books, as some of them we've had for a long time. Then I told him everything else was priced and we could just get to putting things away. We got about 1/3 of the books put away, and it was time for my lunch.

As I was picking up my travel mug to head upstairs, he said to me that he would do the best he could to put away as many books as he could while I was on my lunch break. And I said thank you. Victory eleventy 5.

When I finished my lunch break and came downstairs, there were about 10 more books that needed to be put away. He'd moved all the cookbooks to the top shelves, and turned the cart around so that customers could see all the cookbooks that were available. We had about 15 minutes left until he was done and was going home for the day, and together we worked to get the rest of the books put away, and he quietly picked up his chair and brought it back to the office. Then he went upstairs to talk to my other coworker, and when I went by and registered that they were having a lull in their conversation, I called up the stairs and said, "Thanks for your help today, [name]!" To which he responded, "no worries."

In all, that was the most pleasant work shift that I have ever had with him present. I did not start out with frustration and annoyance at his presence, I started out with the decision to treat him like any other employee at a job who I didn't really know. My understanding is that it's very clear that most people around him treat him like an annoying child, which feels shitty no matter who you are. Because you know when people aren't treating you with any respect, so why should you give them any back? I fully understand that he has some disabilities that he is living with, but I don't have to add to his stress and while it was a little bit of extra work on my part not to lose my temper at one point today, in all seriousness it really came down to how I chose to look at the situation and how I chose to convey my attitude.

I had the expectation today that he was an adult who was fully capable of doing his job, so I went about doing my part of the job, and he stepped up. Today he got my respect because he's a human being who deserves to be treated like one. I also didn't see much of the shitty behavior that I've been told about for 3 years. (Except for the tantrum earlier this morning.) I think him seeing that I wasn't going to lose my temper made him step back and reevaluate. I'm going to take today as a win, and I will endeavor to keep having this same attitude of expectation if he's in the building again when I am also working.

Search fandom etiquette. Or fandom discourse. Others have worded it better than I can

But, what it comes down to is ... Each author is different. The way their fic has been received, the way that comments, anons, negativity, etc all effect them.

You mention being happy. I don't know that it's that.... Exactly. It seems like fandom is shifting. And that's natural in some ways. But. Things that have been rough... Personally and to some posts I've seen... Is that negativity and people being rude seems to be on the rise. In comment sections and inboxes.

And I know that some people say don't put your work on the Internet if you don't expect some criticism.

But. This is something we do for free. Bc we love it. We want to explore this world and the characters.

And fandom has always had golden rule of don't like don't read.

Except people are ignoring that. Or else they are just going over the line of the unspoken... If you don't like it, don't say anything about it. Not publicly where the author can see it.

I've seen the potluck example. We're all bringing something we put time and effort into. If you don't like green bean casserole, then please just pass over my dish. If you think that you like green bean casserole but you don't like a specific ingredient I used, just don't eat it. You wouldn't get it and then complain loudly to someone about it or tell me it's awful.

The second thing that's been talked about lately is positive interaction with authors. There's been a drop in commenting lately and I'm sure there are lots of reasons.

But it can still be discouraging. I know that we're not owed comments. I know. However. We spent time creating this and many of us do crave for someone to tell us so, or ask questions, to know it impacted someone, to know what reader liked. Or we find out it's being rec'd and talked about other places. Which is awesome, and there's nothing wrong with that. What is a bit discouraging is-- a lot of authors would probably never see people giving positive thoughts and love to the story, and that a very small percentage, if any tell it in a comment or message.

But these conversations are easily found on reblogs by many mutuals.

So I am but sure if you're really asking if I'm unhappy and why I personally pulled my fics (and if not, I apologize). but I will touch on the "why" a bit.

I will admit that I got too caught up in that part of it, the validation, I guess you could say.

It was making me sad and discouraged with numbers. Or that I would get negative feedback. Or if something didnt "do as well" as my average.

And that made me realize that right now, I'm just making myself unhappy. And (besides the people who gave the negative comments or asks) that is ultimately on me.

Because at the end of the day, I should write and share bc I love it. I have a story that I want told, a certain characteristizations or situation.

I shouldn't write for validation reasons even if it amazing to know my work was enjoyed.

And then I should see that any interactions are a positive.

So. I tried to separate from that. And having them hidden takes out the numbers game.

And I've reread a few of my stories, and enjoyed them just listening and trying to not go into I need to edit this mode. So that has helped.

I actually also posted something anon to test it out and will pull it if I do obsess. I also turned off anon comments and ppl can't find me here.

And I've had wonderful people send me kind messages and support lately and that does make me remember that there are such wonderful people in the fandom and they very much outnumber those who are loud and rude.

And I've been sitting with that. Hanging out in my little bubble, looking at kind things that people have been saying.

I've been trying to start reading more wip, the backbone of fandom, trying to comment as much as I can on any of the things I'm reading and let others know they're seen and appreciated.

So. I'm not unhappy. I'm blessed actually. I have good fandom friends. I have amazing fics being written for free that I can read and have an escape.

I think that these posts and ones I've written out reblogged is just trying to spread info a bit about what some of us as fanfic authors are looking for.

Alright, best way to start getting into sonic in your opinion, I've only seen X and partially prime and never touched the comics or played the games?

OKAY SO! In all honesty, it really depends very heavily on your own personal interests both in style and media! Fun fact: I also started with Sonic X!! I watched it as a kid and then found Satam and the Archie comics later!! Funny enough it was a reeeeally long time till I got into/played a game.

Like I said I think it heavily depends on what you are interested in and what you have the time or ability to do.

So like, if you are more interested in the shows, I'd say X is a PERFECT start. Sonic X, tho not really seen as that canon to the rest of the franchise cause of it's creative liberties with setting, it does do a lot of stuff both from the games but also original that's super fun and great for a new audiences to get acquainted with the characters and the vibes, I think. Though if you've only seen the dub I do strongly recommend the subs. As much as I love 4kids for the childhood they gave me and for introducing me to one of my biggest special interests for most my life and other shows I enjoy so much they, uh, are not always the best with their dubs qwq Sonic is no exception they changed a lot for it that many fans think screws up some of the story. Of course I also encourage you to watch it with an open mind and form your own opinions on all of this but! Just lettin ya know!

If you wanna continue with the shows I would say Prime is a great one to keep on. There are some fans that complain that its really OOC and like, yeah I think there are some moments here or there but like also it's fun, it's pretty, and if you ship Sonadow there's some nice crumbs in there lol! (Also, personal opinion, I think going into the Sonic franchise and expecting every single media to portray the characters the same way every time is impossible. It's a MASSIVE franchise with TONS of writers both in the Japanese and American sides of Sega and who knows how many more. IDK I don't take screams of OOC to heart all that much personally)

If you wanna see older stuff Sonic the Hedgehog also shortened to Sonic Satam by the fandom is a great cartoon as well. Because of the Archie Sonic series getting the plug pulled, all of those characters are completely retired and non canonical (unless Sega does some king shit but idk if it's possible legally) HOWEVER they are still AWESOME AS FUCK!!! Sally is still to this day one of my fave characters of all time. I was at a con once and a guy at a booth asked me my fave sonic characters I told him it was probably a tie between Shadow and Sally and he was so fucking shocked I knew who Sally was that I didn't realize how much casual sonic ppl don't know the archie characters oirghierhgreui BUT its a super cool show very serious in it's plot and real interesting

TLDR with the cartoons stuff: Sonic X is my first pick for a start so you got that covered but I do recommend the subs, to keep going down the cartoon rout I'd personally say finish Prime next or jump into Sonic Satam

Now if you wanna get more into Sonic via the comics that is a whole other story. There are a few different comic runs, the big three are Fleetway, Archie, and IDW. Fleetway is like insane and I love her dearly but she's fucking bananas wild, one of those 'not a lot of games were out at the time so they did whatever the fuck they wanted' type deals. So I wouldn't recommend Fleetway as a starter but if you wanna see some wild ass Sonic content I say go back to it lol

Honestly, I would recommend either catching up with the IDW series OR start by reading the Archie comics from the Super Genesis Wave to end.

With IDW, I would also say that's the arguably best place to start comic wise. 1) Because it's the current running series. I believe the last one that came out wassss 75? I'm not fully up to date myself but whatever. The IDW comics actually start as a not-explicit-but-well-implied continuation of one of the games, Sonic Forces, but it gives enough background that I don't think you neeeed to play/watch Sonic Forces but it would make the comic start more interesting I feel. 2) Because it has ONLY characters canon to the games or original to the comics. So what you read in IDW is basically considered more or less full canon. The head writer has stated so (though as far as I'm aware no one on the game teams have) and iiiiiif I remember correctly he also worked some on Sonic Frontiers, one of the newer games. Also, again, all the major characters are all pretty standard and established Sonic franchise characters with a few IDW originals sprinkled in to make the world big and the threats interesting.

With Archie being a good start... well... okay. It is but it isn't. SO above I specifically stated to start with Super Genesis Wave Archie which, yes, is not just a string of random ass words. The TLDR (cause this story is INSANE and LONG) is that an old writer on the Archie Sonic comics got sued by Archie because they wanted to keep his characters he made for the franchise but he wanted to leave the team and make his own thing with his own characters it's a whole fucking thing the end of the story is that Archie lost and because of this over 200+ characters had to be retconed from the fucking comics. Yeah. SO to do this there was an in-canon retcon that took place where Eggman fired this weapon that restarted the universe. A shit ton of plotlines were rewritten, characters replaced, and stuff just completely taken out or added in. It was insane BUT the reason I say this would be a decent place to start comic stuff is because 1) the start of this new era makes it to where you really don't have to know that much about the old Archie content to keep up and 2) it's an ended comic so you don't have to worry about it constantly going while you're trying to keep up if that's something you may be worried about. Also, if you do end up watching Sonic Satam and enjoying it, Archie Sonic is the continuation of those characters' stories so! More Sally yay!!!!!

TLDR on starting with comics: IDW starting from the beginning or Archie starting from the Super Genesis Wave

Now if you wanna start with the games. Weeelllll. To be honest with you I watch the games instead of playing them lol! I'm terrible at video games so I watch them on youtube instead of playing them. I've only played a very small handful of Sonic games and an even smaller handful of those did I actually get every far in. Because of this where I know a lot about the games I would not by any means call myself an expert on the topic. I know more about the shows and comics, honestly

BUT if I was to pick a good place to start with the games, I would probably start with Sonic Adventures 1 and 2! I think that the Sonic Adventures games, not only are they INSANELY charming and so cute and fun but also are a perfect spot to really start to get to know the characters and the setting! In fact, you will probably notice a lot of similarities between them and Sonic X since you've seen that show! Since Sonic X was coming out around the Adventure series era they took a lot from those games! They are also the introduction of MANY popular sonic franchise characters and some pretty classic lines and moments!

Honestly, with the games, most of them are made to where you can just jump into the franchise at random. Any that make reference to past games either give an explicit reference so you can follow along or are vague enough to just not matter or be confusing. So by all means! Take a look at the games pick a random one you think looks fun and either play it or pull up a movie version up on youtube! I'm sure you will find something you love in them!!

i swear some ppl have a pre-existing bias when it comes to cgi, lmao. that scene in nwh looked good and you also have to compare the material here. the things that spider-man is able to do is honestly something that (despite tom's background in stunts) no person can physically do! so of course they have to use cgi. and so much of it really looks great and just fits the genre and type of film that it is. like sorry but i don't know why people are expecting these actors or stunt people to move like spider-man does, it's just not possible and to create a movement like that purely organically, so yes cgi is absolutely necessary. i of course am always down for a spidey movie with less cgi, but that would mean less swinging, less action so that would be more suited for a character study - which i think tom has said he'd love to do too in nwh interviews! also anons are comparing a fictional desert alien planet in a remote area (or a fictional city in batmans case) to the very real and very busy setting of nyc! like can yall not see why practical sets work for some but not for all?

also, i gotta say the nwh fight scenes were honestly incredible. i think that scene with peter and the goblin in the apartment is really a top tier comic book film fight. the combo of tom and willem doing the actual stunts plus the vfx work turned out perfect. watching the bts i am always amazed by the stunt crew on the spidey films, they really are among the best of the best in the business

I don't think the Anon/some fans are complaining about the usage of CGI in general for Spider-man... Like I mentioned in my own response yesterday, Marvel wouldn't be able to showcase half of the fantasy worlds and outer space regions like they do in their films if they didn't use CGI. And like you said, the Spider-man films NEED CGI because he's doing stuff that most humans cannot do lol. 😅

With that said, I think Anon was just expressing frustration with the OVER-use of CGI in films today.

I keep bringing this up, but if you go back and watch "Batman: The Dark Knight", for example, you will notice a stark contrast. I think one of the reasons why that movie was so GREAT (aside from the great acting, the awesome writing, and the overall directing of the film) is that it was shot with barely any CGI, so it actually felt like a situation that could occur in REAL life.

Gotham is a fake city, and Batman scales walls also, but the CGI is so much LESS than what we see in most Marvel films.

Christopher Nolan even swears that he did NOT use any CGI in Oppenheimer in order to depict the explosions, and I think that was a deliberate choice.

This just goes to show that some films CAN be made without so much CGI.

Granted, it does make things much easier when you use CGI.... but there's a sense of realism at times when you don't use too much of it.

With that said.....

So yea, don't get me wrong, I'm def not against CGI at all! Sometimes, you actually NEED it for many scenes, and it's used in TONS of films (even in areas/scenes that you don't pick up on), but I can see how having too much of it can get a bit old or even annoying.

NWH deserves some grace though, coz we were in a pandemic, and even the original locations for filming for the film went from multiple locations to just ONE: Atlanta. 👀

MANY films had to just film in one location during those covid years due to health and traveling concerns for the cast, crew, etc.

One thing I'd love to see (that I usually saw in Tobey's Franchise) is the heart of New York City and the PEOPLE in it in the film. To me, that really helps to set the tone and setting for the film.

For some reason, with Tom's Spiderman, they seem to have made the City take a back seat. 🥴

Maybe they will always film mostly in Atlanta. 🤷🏾‍♀️ But I do miss seeing the actual CITY of New York (and not just CGI or sets) in the Spiderman films. 😔

Finally at present day, with us having been dating for three years, it seems like all of this could’ve been missed if anything had gone wrong. I DEDICATE AT LEAST HALF AN HOUR OF EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DAY THINKING ABOUT MERLIN WITH AN ACCENT!!!!

Like.... I'm turning this into a headcanon set because I need to think about this right now (if someone else wants to expand it that's fine, or if it's popular enough, I'll add it to the next List update).

ANYWAY!!!

Say he's not actually from Essetir, but Ireland (from research I think it was called Hibernia during the medieval ages, or maybe Alba? I'm not sure, so I'll just stick with Ireland), and Balinor ran a little further afield before meeting Hunith, and then returning once things had settled down to live in that skanky cave, so he can keep an eye on how Camelot was doing. Hunith and Merlin travel to Essetir when Merlin is maybe twelve or so?? So the accent and customs (and even the language) is like... heavily embedded. (To cover plot holes... uh... Gaius is also Irish, but travelled over with... relatives(?) when he was so young that he doesn't have an accent, or even really any memories of home. He has however visited and been visited by his sister enough to have a good relationship with her, and they exchanged letters regularly before and after she moved to Essetir. There. Don't think about it too much.)

HOWEVER!! When he moves to Camelot, he covers it up, because Camelot already hates Bastards (check), Sorcerers (double check) and also Gaels (check again). So to make his life easier, he gives himself a generic Essetirian/Camelot accent, and no one really notices, Maybe he has a bit of a lilt here and there, but people chalk it up to him spending lots of time with a diverse set of people, and/or maybe just being a country bumpkin. The lilt definitely comes out more when he's angry, the angrier he is the stronger it is, but, what the majority of Merlin's friends don’t know, is that they've never really seen him truly angry. Annoyed, frustrated maybe, a little pissed off, but not properly angry. Not for the first few years at least, so again, no one really notices.

Sometimes he rants to himself under his breath in Gaels, more so when he's with Gaius because it's not like the guy doesn't already know, even if he can't actually understand (Gaius does mourn the loss of his heritage sometimes, especially because, when delirious, Merlin's accent comes back full force, and Gaius can't understand a word he's saying).

Anyway. I do have this scenario in my head of some poor page running into the Throne room all "Oh CHRIST, My Lord, there's a woman in the courtyard who claims to have killed Morgause and rescued Morgana!! BUT!!! She says she'll only speak to Myrddin??" And the whole room is in uproar and Merlin just rolls his eyes at them and goes "What does she look like?", at the description he just goes "Oh shit" except in Gaels and runs out. All the gang follow to see him embracing this woman and speaking fast Gaels to her. She's introduced as his sister or an old childhood neighbour/friend or something. She couldn't give less of a shit about Camelot's anti magic laws if she TRIED, and fully admits to defeating the two witches with magic, because she herself is also a witch, and basically dares Arthur to do something abut it whilst Merlin despairs. Once the shock passes, someone, probably Gwaine, just goes "Hey, Merls, what's with the accent?? And the name??" and the woman just raises her eyebrow and goes "Aye, Merls, what's with the accent and the name?" And he has to admit that he's Irish and his real name is Myrddin (I know it's actually Welsh but let’s pretend just for now) and talks in his normal accent and everyone just... blue screens.

At least three times a day for the next few weeks, if not months, he has to explain the "new" accent to friends whom he hasn't spoken to since before the incident. Overall it's very funny, and everyone in Camelot suddenly finds Merlin ten times hotter. Arthur is struggling to cope. Leon openly drools. Gwaine is so wowed he can't even flirt right. Gwen trips over every time he speaks.

His accent is naturally really toned down, from years of hiding it and just being around people who don't have that accent, but it still gets strong when he shouts, and is nigh impossible to understand when he's concussed/drugged/suffering from blood loss/exhausted to the point of delirium. He also starts using words like "aye" to mean yes, and "slán" (the original of Sláinte, meaning good health, or cheers), when he says goodbye, and it's very endearing but also very confusing.

Our man is just so much happier being able to be himself and share his culture with no backlash, because Uther's been gone a while, and Arthur made peace with the Gaels ages ago (Merlin was basically just in too deep to back out then and kept clutching straws until the sister/friend arrived and blew it all wide open). Now he just has to do the same with the magic thing.... But then again!! Sister/friend not giving a fuck has maybe done that already. So. Maybe he's already set?

Anyway. Merlin with an Irish accent. Yes Please Please Please :D

I love this idea of yours! And a cool thing is that we've seen Earthlings channel their ki into their limbs before. Yamcha has channeled ki to his fist when fighting the Ginyu Force in filler episodes. & Krillin's Non-Self State always has energy around his fists that increase his attacks.

Ki Materialization is a fun thing to give Earthlings. One I've always thought this would fit well for Yamcha. Yamcha was a swordsman before, so imagine him with blades and swords made from ki. Its perfect for him!

I've also had some ideas that are unique to Krillin, Yamcha, & Tenshinhan. Examples would be...

KRILLIN 🌰⠿

NON-SELF STATE: 🕉

This power for Krillin is so awesome because it's actually canon. If you haven't read my essay that explains it, link here. In short, it's Krillin's Avatar State that temporarily gives him cosmic power. In my opinion, this power is cooler than giving Krillin Kaio-Ken or a buff form like Roshi. But, Krillin using a buff form or Kaio-Ken could be used in combination with the calm godly power of Non-Self State (similar to SSBKK).

I hope we get to see more of Krillin's NSS in the future. 🤞

YAMCHA 🥟🐺

KI SWORD: 🗡️

Yamcha was originally a swordsman, so now Yamcha would create a powerful sword out of his own ki. He could use it to slice at his enemy, but also send ki blasts at his opponents by swinging his ki blade.

RAGING WOLF: 🐺💢

Evolution of the Wolf Fang Fist. Yamcha undergoes a massive power up into a stronger state. His senses & power sharpen, he bulks up a bit more, his pupils turn red, his hair rises up like fur on an animal's neck, then he grows fangs. Suddenly, a wolf aura encompasses his entire body. The energy within him is too much for his body to contain that it needs to form a wolf aura around his body just to use the power. Think of it as releasing the Kaio-Ken into an aura barrier so the body can still function properly while having extra defensive capabilities. Its not overflowing. Its controlled. The aura protects Yamcha from attacks until it gets worn down.

(Partially a reference to Dr. Slump's Tsukutsun Tsun who is crazy strong when angry and turns into a tigerman when a female touches him. He and Yamcha in resemble each other a lot too.)

This Wolf Fang Fist technique is actually much cooler than ppl think. It heightens Yamcha's senses as well as increasing his speed & strength. It's basically the mortal version of the Kaio-Ken, but without the threat of damaging the body. What would be really cool is if he learned to add multipliers. Imagine a Neo Wolf Fang Fist x10 & the only downside is that it depletes his ki faster. He still gets strength, speed, & reaction boosts.

TENSHINHAN 🍳🍚

PINPOINT STRIKES: 👁

Focusing ki to his third eye allows him to find openings to attack vital spots IF he can move quick enough. He attacks with swift chops and jabs (reference to Fist of The North Star.) Capable of greatly damaging opponents stronger than himself. The main purpose is swift assassination of evil.

(Sounds a lot like Granolah, but I actually wrote this in my notes during the Moro arc when Tien was fighting the escaped prisoners. Granolah is a lot like Tein in many ways too. A misled assassin/bounty hunter with a special eye)

PRECOGNITION: 👁

By focusing his ki to his third eye, Tenshinhan is able to see a few moments into the future so that he can better combat his opponent. In combination with his Pinpoint Strikes, Tenshinhan can be extremely deadly.

CHAOZU 🥟🥟

PSYCHIC STOP: 🧠🧊

Similar technique to Guldo's time stop except its using psychosis to freeze an opponent's mind, thus freezing their perception & movements. He can use this on a few ppl at once & freeze everything within a certain parameter (if the opponents aren't too strong). For extremely strong opponents, this technique slows them down instead of freezing them. Drains Chaozu's ki quickly.

TELEPORTATION:

Chaozu is able to use his psychic powers to teleport short distances.

CHI-CHI 🐄🥛

INVISIBLE KI:

Chi-Chi would specialize in air pressure attacks (we could say Goku taught her) like air pressure punches & air slice attacks to reference the blade on her helmet when she was a child. And she could use kiai attacks (those shout attacks & silent eye attacks that send invisible energy to push opponents away).

She doesn't fight often, but characters like her & Videl would be capable of fighting weak enemies and protect her weaker friends like Bulma.

AJNA BEAM: 👁

The beam attack Chi-Chi used as a kid except she doesn't need a gem anymore. This would be one of the few visible ki based attacks she could use.

(I say "ajna" because it's the 3rd eye chakra & its in the same position as Chi-Chi's gem.)

It sucks that DB focuses too much on Saiyans and we don't get to see the experts of ki control use ki expertly. We just get to see Saiyans powerhouse in battles with little skill (except for Goku who is an Earthling raised Saiyan).

But those are my thoughts.

Literally THANK YOU for asking me this bc Susan Pevensie is a character I never get asked about and I have So Many Opinions.

I'm going to start by saying that Susan used to be my least favorite character in the series. This goes for the books and the movies. Some of it was for personal reasons--she reminds me of a couple of annoying ppl I know irl--but it was also bc I watched Prince Caspian which shoehorned her into a relationship with Caspian which I hated.

HOWEVER. I ended up rethinking this position after interacting with Susan fans and realizing that there are so many wonderful things to love about her!

Things Ash Loves About Susan Pevensie

Aight I'm not going to do a formal analysis yet on her, but instead rant about some of the unrelated things I adore about Susan Pevensie.

Susan the Archer

Look we all love archery here. I don't have anything more to say.

Okay, I actually do have more to say. I love the fact that Susan is a complete badass with the bow. You get the general impression that she's one of the royals in charge of public relations, traditions, foreign policy, etc. and yet she's the most competent archer in the series. One of the few things I liked about the movies is how they didn't downplay this. They actually let her be a badass and show off her skills.

Also the part where she kicks Trumpkin's ass was awesome.

Susan the Gentle

Susan being the most passive Pevensie was something I definitely underappreciated as a teenager. I think my non-ability to see past "I'm not like other girls" narrative and the combination of Susan being described as the most traditionally feminine woman in the Narnia series is what initially turned me off from her.

HOWEVER, now it's one of my favorite attributes! I love that Susan is a badass and the most beautiful woman in Narnia. She has hair down to her feet, every man and woman in the kingdom want to fuck her, and she's still a fucking badass who will not hesitate to kick your ass.

Susan the Sister

Most of my thoughts of Susan as an older sister mostly stem from my own personal headcanons, but she is an awesome sister to her siblings. She's Peter's voice of reason, Edmund's sass partner, and Lucy's big sister.

Susan the Mom-Friend

She is a literal mother-figure for Corin.

"[...] the most beautiful lady he had ever seen rose from her place and threw her arms round him and kissed him, saying: "Oh Corin, Corin, how could you? And thou and I such close friends ever since thy mother died. [...]"

-The Horse and His Boy, 33-34

Most everything I have to say about this ventures into headcanon territory, but I love the idea of Susan basically adopting Corin after his mom dies. The way she trusts Cor--who she thinks is Corin in this chapter--is really sweet and I wish we could've seen more of that relationship.

Susan the Flawed

Something I notice from the fandom is a lot of people who hate Susan tend to because of her flaws. On the other hand, most Susan stans like to wave away these flaws and blame C.S. Lewis for being misogynistic or Aslan for being a "cruel god" and ignore the fact that she is a deeply flawed person.

Susan gets something of a "reverse redemption arc" in The Chronicles of Narnia. This makes her not only a fascinating foil to Edmund--as both are analytical, logical people--but an interesting character by herself.

She starts out in TWW as very skeptical of Narnia and it's whole deal and also very condescending to Lucy throughout. She ultimately does admit that Lucy was right and does get on board with the whole prophecy at the same time Peter does, and ends the book being crowned "the Gentle Queen."

In The Horse and His Boy, she has a very interesting dynamic with Edmund and in even more interesting relationship with Rabadash. They don't even interact on-page with each other, but it's highly implied that she was interested in him when he was a guest in Narnia. His behavior obviously changed when she visited him in Tashbaan, but you have to wonder what their dynamic was like before for her to travel all the way to his home when relations between the countries were strained at best.

Prince Caspian is where the cracks start showing through. Susan has lived an entire life as an adult in Narnia, gets thrown back to England with her siblings, and is yet again in Narnia as a child. This book is what really emphasizes her one fatal flaw: convenience.

(Put a pin in that thought, I'll get back to it.)

Susan denies once again that Lucy saw something that the rest of them can't seen. She continues this narrative until every other sibling finally acknowledges Lucy in the right and only then does she apologize.

The last mention of Susan is in The Last Battle, where all of her flaws rise up against her in the worst way possible. I have a lot of controversial opinions on this that I'm going to address later, but I just want to say that Susan's reverse-redemption arc is something I actually like about her.

(There is also evidence that Susan does get a full redemption arc, just as Edmund and Eustace did, but C.S. Lewis was pretty much done with The Chronicles of Narnia at the point and instead encouraged fans to write their own version of how that went down.)

Okay, back to convenience being Susan's fatal flaw. So the one thing that comes up time and time again in the series is that Susan is very focused on material comforts. I believe it's implied that she's vain, and it's canonical that her own personal comfort spurs her to make decisions.

"[...] I really believed it was him — he, I mean — yesterday. When he warned us not to go down to the fir wood. And I really believed it was him tonight, when you woke us up. I mean, deep down inside. Or I could have, if I'd let myself. But I just wanted to get out of the woods and — and — oh, I don't know [...]"

Prince Caspian, 81

Prince Caspian has the strongest examples of Susan doing this, but certainly there's evidence elsewhere. There are a lot of fans who are distressed by this, claiming that Aslan and the others are too hard on her and shouldn't judge.

Honestly, I like that she's written with this flaw. Not only is it very relatable--(my own personal comfort and convenience is something I highly prioritize too)--but it humanizes a character who otherwise is ridiculously op and basically the Helen of Troy of the series. It may sound like I'm using this as an excuse to rant, but I really wouldn't have her any other way.

Susan As Portrayed by Anna Popplewell

Movie!Susan is a fucking delight.

She's sarcastic and badass and awesome and I could spend hours heaping praise on Anna's acting and her portrayal of Susan, but I can already tell that this post is going to be long so, I'll just stop here.

(10/10 want to be stabbed by her tho.)

Personal Headcanons

Let's talk about my fanon thoughts. I have many.

Susan is Aro

There's canonical evidence for this! Susan is a character who is heavily pursued by suitors everywhere, and even lets herself be courted by many of them, but chooses not to settle down. Even when she gets back to England and is described as only having interest in parties and material things, boys aren't mentioned.

I like to think that in The Horse in His Boy Susan was interested in Rabadash at first because he was a brilliant conversationalist. Nothing she says about him implies romantic interest, before and after she realizes the truth of his intentions.

Susan and Edmund Were Best Friends

This might be my love for The Horse and His Boy showing itself, but I think Susan and Edmund were thrown into circumstances where they interacted the most with each other.

Edmund is the ruler in charge of politics. Susan is the ruler in charge of Cair Paravel's public image. I imagine they spent time as ambassadors to other countries and planning royal functions.

They're also the most level-headed and logical out of their siblings, so they probably found a lot in common.

Susan Fancast

I literally just said I loved Anna's potrayal of Susan's (and I love what they gave us of older Susan too in LWW!), but I read the books in 2008 and my parents didn't let me see the movies bc I was like...nine years old and they thought it would be too scary.

So I had to headcanon my own interpretations.

Queen Susan the Gentle:

For some reason Merlin wasn't too scary for me to watch and I fell in love with Katie McGrath in like. Two episodes so. (On an unrelated note, I also fancast Bradley James as Peter at the time.)

Anyway, fanon Susan is basically Morgana Pendragon pre-evil arc. Sassy as hell, hot as fuck, and can kick your ass.

Yeah, feel free to skip this part if having controversial fandom opinions is a deal breaker for you.

The Problem With Susan Isn't Actually A Problem

I'm about to start so much discourse in the Narnia fandom, but C.S. Lewis's choices with her in The Last Battle weren't misogynistic. Bear in mind, I'm not saying that all of his writing choices in the series were A++ or excusing away certain racist/sexiest bits, but it's honestly baffling to me that people are so up in arms over Susan's exclusion in the final book.

So the part that everyone loses their shit over is as follows:

"My sister Susan," answered Peter shortly and gravely, "is no longer a friend of Narnia."

"Yes," said Eustace, "and whenever you've tried to get her to come and talk about Narnia or do anything about Narnia, she says 'What wonderful memories you have! Fancy your still thinking about all those funny games we used to play when we were children.'"

"Oh Susan!" said Jill, "she's interested in nothing now-a-days except nylons and lipstick and invitations. She always was a jolly sight too keen on being grown-up."

"Grown-up, indeed," said the Lady Polly. "I wish she would grow up. She wasted all her school time wanting to be the age she is now, and she'll waste all the rest of her life trying to stay that age. Her whole idea is to race on to the silliest time of one's life as quick as she can and then stop there as long as she can."

The Last Battle, 83-84

There's a lot to unpack here and I first want to say that everyone's opinion on this part, no matter how different than mine, is valid. I'm going to be quoting some other ppl's opinions on here and by no means am I bashing them. I just want to address my feelings on the matter and the best way to do that is to cite the thoughts of ppl who have opposing ideas.

Here are some arguments on Tumblr I've heard regarding "The Problem of Susan":

"How about we talk about what might have happened if Narnia hadn't deserted Susan? [...] What if we didn't tell Susan she had to go grow up in her own world and then shame and punish her for doing just that? She was told to walk away and she went. She did not try to stay a child all her life, wishing for something she had been told she couldn't have again."

"Narnia is filled with metaphors (often not very subtle ones) that are supposed to teach us how to be, and the most glaring one for any young girl to absorb is that it's okay to be a girl like Lucy, unthreatening and cheerful and valiant and faithful, but to be a girl like Susan gets you punished - in fact, you aren't just punished, you're destroyed."

"why do we call it ‘the problem’ where’s the problem about a young woman dealing with her trauma and choosing her own path, actively making the choice to keep living and to stay and to carve a life out in England when her siblings couldn’t? what is the problem about susan forgetting to somehow cope with what she’s experienced? why is it ‘the problem of susan’ that she recontextualised her faith?"

And then there's JK Rowling who said this:

There comes a point where Susan, who was the older girl, is lost to Narnia because she becomes interested in lipstick. She's become irreligious basically because she found sex. I have a big problem with that.

It's weird how I'm still finding new ways to hate JKR in the year 2021. Again, there is absolutely zero implication that Susan had sex when she came back to England. ZERO. Did she actually read the books? IDK. If someone shares this opinion pls reply with actual canonical evidence.

Back on topic, I'm a firm believer of death of the author and interpreting art via your own experiences. Which is why I'm also going to share my own interpretation by saying y'all are wrong.

Susan Pevensie was not abandoned by Narnia. She was not barred from Narnia because she is traditionally feminine or because she "owned her sexuality" (another opinion I didn't have time to condense down for this post) or because she recontextualized her faith or even because she deserved to be punished.

I also fail to see how Susan recontexualized her faith, as the entire point of it all is that she has none. Bringing this back to Susan's fatal flaw (personal convenience/material comforts), her prioritizing herself over her own faith is the reason she is "no longer a friend of Narnia." Not...whatever fanon y'all are imposing on her character.

Susan is not being punished for liking lipstick and looking pretty. Susan's not even being punished. Y'all read Neil Gaiman's The Problem of Susan and forgot it wasn't canon.

There are many reasons Susan is not in Aslan's Country (one of them being that she's not actually dead yet), but the main one has to do with this:

"[...] But there I have another name. You must learn to know me by that name. This was the very reason why you were brought to Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there.”

Voyage of the Dawn Treader, 215-216

Yeah, okay that's why Susan is no longer a friend of Narnia. The implication when the Pevensies are told that they can no longer enter Narnia is that they are to find Aslan in other places. Susan doesn't do this, instead choosing to focus her life on material things. It isn't the lipstick, it's that she only wants the lipstick.

Susan Had Sex In The Books

Oh and not in the context y'all are thinking. (Again, there are no implications that Susan was barred from Narnia for having sex or that she had sex when she came back to England.)

So there's actual canonical evidence that Susan and Rabadash had a sexual relationship. Sort of.

"What think you? We have been in this city fully three weeks. Have you yet settled in your mind whether you will marry this dark-faced lover of yours, this Prince Rabadash, or no?"

Edmund calls Rabadash her lover. Not her suitor. I don't know if the word had a different meaning in 1954, but it feels like C.S. Lewis is saying that they're fucking. I'm not really happy with the idea of Susan sleeping with an abuser, but really proud of her for Getting Some as a woman born in a time period where having premarital sex was a big no-no.

This also invalidates the weird opinion going on that Susan was barred from Narnia because she had sex.

Suspian Is The Worst

I haven't really talked about Movie!Susan much, but as long as we're talking unpopular opinions, it's worth noting that I hate Suspian. Some of it is the "Susan is Aro" headcanon screaming inside of me, but it's also the fact that it's written poorly, does nothing interesting for either character and generally comes across as awkward.

I feel like they were trying to make Prince Caspian sexy and relevant to teens. It came across as super heteronormative and unnecessary.

It also gets really really weird bc the next movie then gives Caspian and Edmund mad chemistry and we're all just like........ok.

Final Thoughts

Susan may not be my favorite character in the series, but she's grown on me over the years. I have many issues with fanon interpretations of her--which definately fueled some of my disdain for her initally--and I don't identify as a Susan Apologist.

I do however adore Susan and have many headcanons for her not mentioned here. I love reading fanfic, writing fanfic and meta, and generally having conversations about her and would love to talk more about it.
