i think the thing i'm most disappointed about with riordanverse fandom now versus like 2014 is not only has the fandom not gotten any less racist or queerphobic or ableist (in fact in some regards its gotten worse!) but now it's just boring too. like there's no fandom infrastructure anymore - the community these days is almost entirely source material-driven - and you deviate from canon even slightly people get weird about it. whatever happened to the post-HoO fanon boom. the fandom needs to get weirder again. and self-sufficient. and less offensive.

Was discussing fic commenting practices with a friend the other day, and realised we both comment on things for different underlying reasons. So I thought it might be interesting to make a poll about it! Why do you comment? Do you see it as a one-on-one interaction with the author, or as a way of supporting the community? Is it a form of payment or the start of a dialogue?

I think there are a lot of different and valid attitudes to this, and I’m curious to see what different readers’ thought processes are! "The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System" is such a great title because it can either refer to the concept of the system (a magical electronically menu to help the player/protagonist in his transmigration journey) saving the villain, or to a system operated by an entire group of people that works to allow a villain to keep on doing villainous things.

Look even though I was never really a Canon x Oc ship kind of person I always get really excited when I see canon x oc ships or people talking about their OCs and the way they use them to change canon and all the little OC things because it makes it feel like fandom in 2012 again. I love seeing it. These people are not fighting about whether normies have ruined fandom etiquette or if Cons are unbearable to attend. They're simply drawing their pretty girl OCs kissing Kuroo and I, for one, completely support that.

yeah it was me who made the post about subbing in the assassins for the women - tbh i think you can assume if there’s a meta post about thk and comparing it to taming, im the one that made it cause i have genuinely not seen anyone else making meta posts about it shskdhd which is like fair! i get that people are way more familiar with 10 things and i also get the urge with the source material being so heavily about misogyny, but tbh i feel like you’re taking away from either one by making it about men, because while the misogyny isnt as prominent in 10 things, kat being a feminist is very integral to her character, so either way there’s things that are being lost if we’re saying it’s based on 10 things. but it’s just. very frustrating when i or other people comment on taming and people reply with stuff like “oh it’s not even actually based on that lol” because!! it is!! it actively is!! like i know a lot of people are gonna miss the direct references, hell IVE missed a number of references that i only caught upon rereading taming post ep5 but it’s such a discredit to jojo and the team when they have put in the WORK of this being a shakespeare adaption for so many people to just kind of dismiss it. like i have my grips with taking out the women but subbing them in for assassins and therefore allowing the stakes to be raised to the same manner that the misogyny exists within taming is something i have genuinely not seen in another taming adaption and it is utterly fascinating to me and it’s a genuinely interesting route for them to have gone. sorry for going off in your inbox but as a shakespeare nerd/someone who got their degree in theatre, i take the shakespeare aspect of this show far more seriously than most other people and it’s genuinely frustrating to me when people dismiss it shskdhd

Ok first off, please don't apologise for going off, I love this! I love reading about other people's passions and how they influence perspectives on something I also love because it's soooo fascinating to me the details that other people see that I'll miss because I don't have the same interest/background/experiences. Like. Everything Style right now is going to be tied to him losing his mother and how that influences his Character and Personality and Way of Looking at the World, but I'm also conscious that it's because that's literally My Story, too. Anyway, sorry for going on a bit of a tangent there.

I didn't mean to downplay (my tags here for context) the inaccuracy of assuming that THK is an adaption of 10 Things vs ToS, but what I was trying to get at is how it's simply easier for a contemporary audience to see scenes like Style embarrassing Fadel in the stadium as being a reference to 10 Things and Patrick serenading Kat at the end of the show and ignore the way the tone and the intention of the characters (Style in ep 3 vs Patrick at the end of the movie) are TOTALLY different, and actually Style doing that was far more in line with Petruchio subjecting Katherina to public humiliation in his method of wooing in the early stages of the play (although tbh I don't think that ever really changes in the play and in THIS, at least, I'm glad THK is ALSO a romance). Even the way the people in the stadium respond to Style's antics with baffled amusement is a better reference to how Petruchio's behaviour was mostly accepted by the society at the time despite how cruel it really was to Katherina.

But yeah, like, its just harder to see that because while both ToS and 10 Things actually does, as you say, deal with misogyny very intentionally, because they're both depictions of misogyny set in their respective time periods, what we see in ToS is SO alien vs what we see in 10 Things. And since THK is again an even more recent/current adaption, the social 'vibe' it has is closer to 10 Things than to ToS.

As a 90s kid, 10 Things was one of my favourite movies precisely because it unflinchingly commented on (and dramatised) my own experience of how girls/women were required to behave/speak/think in certain ways to fit a 'feminine' ideal, but if you compare it objectively to ToS, what it depicted was so much tamer (pun not intended) to what women in Shakespeare's time experienced.

And as someone who's currently working in education, it's sad to see the way classics like Shakespeare's plays have slowly lost value in education for more "modern" and "relevant" pieces of literature because I actually think the lessons to be learned in these works are so valuable and necessary to raise a generation of nuanced thinkers.

And the byproduct of this is that when people are watching something like THK it's simply harder to appreciate where the true inspiration lies.

John Stewart -

the DCAU was basically my big introduction to DC as a whole, so I love him with Shayera, even though I know that's not really accurate to comics canon (as much as DC seems to pretend it is, which is lowkey giving "peaked in high school" vibes tbh).

Other than Shayera, I do like John with both Guy and Hal. There's decent canon evidence for both: when John thinks of who he can trust implicitly, he thinks of Guy, but when he picks Hal for a GL mission, Guy grumbles about "the brass" always picking favorites. I think John balances both of them out well in different ways. I think guyjohn and johnhal might be tied for me. Guyjohn would probably usually take the edge for me, but I just recently talked to an oomfie about this johnhal moment in a fic and.....well.

I'm waiting with bated breath to see Katma in my read of Green Lantern: Silver Age. I've heard so much about her. Possibly when I meet her, John/Katma will shoot up to the top of my fave John ships.

Guy Gardner -

I've read a decent chunk of JLI just so I could see some Guytora. I didn't even get far enough to see some real Guytora tbh, I'll have to return to JLI some day. So while i LOVE seeing guytora fanart and stuff, I don't actually know this ship that well

Other than guytora, I like Guy with any of the other Four Corpsmen tbh, he has great chemistry with all three. Guy and Hal have very interesting parallels, though I think their personalities are very aggressive and would clash long-term; Guy and Kyle seem very sweet; and Guy and John are complementary in kind of a red oni, blue oni way. Out of these three, I think guyjohn takes my fave for Guy.

Kyle Rayner -

I still haven't read Kyle's run of GL tbh (SORRY KYLE but I'm trying to get thru all of GL: Silver Age and moving forward with that)

which means that the only prominent ship I have seen with Kyle is Kyle and Soranik Natu, and I have to be honest...I actually think they work really well together. I think they're complementary in that Kyle gets Soranik to open up and Soranik help balances Kyle. Plus, the artist x doctor thing? IDK!! it works! (until it doesn't, but u get my point)

Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz - I haven't read their run either SORRY GUYS. But as far as I have seen of these two, I see them as best friends.

Jo Mullein - currently, Syzn of the Cliffs no question (the other guy is a bit of an ass, even if he is a more loveable one by the end of Far Sector). Would absolutely be open-minded to new Jo ships, however, now that she's been outside the City Enduring and with the main GLs for a while. Would love to see her get with more alien gals.

Alan Scott - I read Alan Scott: The Green Lantern (2023) as my big introduction to the character, and I do know now that Vladimir Sokov didn't really exist before that and that it was kind of a huge retcon when they could've used Jimmy... but yeah I have to say Alan and Vladimir is my favorite Alan ship. Alan and Jay Garrick interest me, but I haven't seen them together as much as I have seen Vladimir and Alan and....well. it's doomed yaoi. they knew what they were doing.

Kilowog - Hal no diff, not just because I actually really like Halowog but also because I don't really know if Kilowog has had any fleshed-out love interests? He's had his mate who afaik is unnamed, and he had that alien lady from GLTAS... but I also do really like Hal and Kilowog together. I used to be so-so about it, but I've basically done a 180 (especially after the whole Constructowog business omg). And as i've said before, I think my favorite dynamic is Hal x [stabilizing presence].

Soranik Natu -

my fave Soranik ship is a tie between Soranik/Kyle and Soranik/Iolande.

Soranik/Kyle has had more canon interactions, and they do complement each other out well, like I said earlier! HOWEVER! while I did say that Kyle got Soranik to open up, honestly Soranik chose that by herself, Kyle just made a safe space for her to do so. someone else could fulfill that role for her. And while I did say that Soranik let Kyle process his grief, what I was really thinking about was the moment where she suggests that he make a mural of all the deceased GLs.

Soranik/Iolande has a lot of potential!!!! I have talked to a moot about this recently, but they have UNTAPPED levels of tension and conflict. Like, Soranik chose Iolande to be her sector partner, but Iolande is a PRINCESS, and this has mostly manifested in the text as just "oh haha it's funny that she has to balance the bureaucracy of being a ruler with the resposibilities with being a GL, she's so busy all the time xD" when it is so odd and seems to go completely ignored that Soranik comes from a planet where their previous GL was the ruler (albeit a despot, which Soranik and Iolande both hate on principle), and that GL was depised SO MUCH that both Katma and Soranik had to deal with the lingering hatred so many years later. so WHY would soranik choose someone who she knew was going to inherit the throne and all the political power that entails as her fellow GL???

I think it could be a really interesting contrast between Iolande and Soranik if Iolande was super political and kind of an activist (she is canonically very interested in the socio-political aspects of the GL's role) whereas Soranik specifically tries to stay apolitical because she fears gaining any political power and meddling in politics or, God forbid, becoming a Sinestro-like figure, because of her planet's history

THEY COULD HAVE SO MANY PARALLELS TO SINHAL!!! OUGHHH SINHAL COULD HAUNT THE SORALANDE NARRATIVE!!!! u would think that obviously Sinestro = Soranik and Iolande = Hal in this parallel because of their respective color rings (at least, once Soranik is kidnapped by Sinestro and forced to be a Yellow Lantern), but I also think that this parallel could be way more complex than that. Iolande being the monarch of her planet might actually make Sinestro see more of himself in her than in Soranik. Also, Sinestro+Iolande and Hal+Soranik have more similarities in terms of personalities. IT COULD BE COMPLEX AND AND LAYERED AND IT COULD BE SO SO INTERESTING

Thaal Sinestro (I'm counting him because he used to be a GL + he is a prominent character of the GL franchise + AFAIK he is currently a GL in canon comics as of currently) - Hal, no diff. Although honestly I do think their dynamic is better in canon if sinhal isn't ever actually a thing because I think the romance might distract from how tragic their relationship is.
