UPDATE: i successfully resisted the impulse to go slap hearts on LOTS more of their posts out of spite. and then i blocked them. bc. they weren't actually rude in the method of communication or words used. although the content of the message Felt Very Rude? but i'm still confused and mad about being confused and startled by such a different mindset to mine in regards to How To Tumblr (and i've been on tumblr for about 3yrs now btw)

The issue is that folks believe spam liking will trigger a shadowban due to Insta flagging the likes as bot activity

Disclaimed that it’s 5:00am and I haven’t slept yet so if this answer sucks no it doesn’t-

My first thought is black smoke with discoloration from “sun bleaching” or other causes of rusting - changes to the coat due to endoparasities, illness, nutritional deficiencies, etc have to be on the list, especially with an outdoor cat.

It could also be due to a very benign cause such as spending too much time laying in mulch or another surface that bleeds color.

There’s evident discharge from the eyes so my impression is that the discoloration in that area is due to chronic epiphora, similar to brachycephalic breeds - i.e. “tear stains.”

I’m not seeing anything suggestive of tabby, the markings are consistent with the “ghost tabby” pattern typical of shorthair smokes and the nose is solid black instead of the reddish-pinkish tabby’s usually are. Similarly I’m not getting tortie vibes, all of the warm patches read to me as discoloration!

my best guess would be some kind of silver tortoiseshell tabby (torbie) that's just ended up really hazy in the markings for some reason. something they KIND OF look like but not really is a chocolate smoke, but that wouldn't explain the rustyness on this cat's points :/ also, as far as rusting from the sun goes, that tends to appear very prominently on the flanks, and i don't see why it's only on this cat's points. also, i watched through the video and this is a random-bred feral population isolated to an island, so i don't want to bring in any rare recessive traits only found in purebred populations

There’s so much variety in black (“brown”) tabby cats that it’s really just amazing how many different looks they can pull off.

Hello, it is I - your local Cat Breed Autistic. I take this designation very seriously.

Naava is a stunning Domestic Shorthair of the color black mackerel tortoiseshelly tabby with white.

Allow me to break this down.

Side Note: The color identification is thrown in there as a freebie. I’m also one of the local Cat Color & Genetics Autistics.

The overwhelming majority of cats are of no breed origin, they’re fully random-bred with no distinct breed ancestry traceable in their lineage. The average cat you see is merely… cat, which can be understandably difficult to wrap your head around in a dogcentric world given our canine companions tend to be quite the opposite - most dogs are some sort of breed or mix, even if it’s very mixed with distant breeds. I’m not getting into landrace populations, which are genetically distinct.

What’s the Breed of Your Cat?

It was a good call not to go the DNA test route to determine breed, despite the marketing this just doesn’t work for cats - people say the science isn’t there yet but given how cat breeds function in comparison to dog breeds I don’t think we’ll ever reach a point where breed testing is reliable beyond maybe breed groups.

When it comes to showing dogs most breeds have a “closed stud book,” this means outcrossing to other breeds is strictly prohibited by the registry and those involved with the breed on various levels tend to be passionate about pedigree purity as well from what I’ve seen out of the purebred dog/dog showing community as a whole.

But when it comes to cats there are restrictions on outcrossing but it is permitted between certain breeds, within certain generations or for breeding stock but not for show. This makes locking down distinct genetic markers for individual breeds a questionably attainable goal.

There are a few products on the market now but Basepaws and Wisdom Panel remain the most popular and well-known, and these two are also the ones I have personal experience.

Basepaws is more upfront in the literature you get with the actual testing that they aren’t really going to determine your cats breed because of the reasons discussed above, they’re going to tell you what groups they have the most genomic similarities to.

Unfortunately their social media presence leans far more heavily on their reputation as a “cat breed test” and I can only assume that’s because the layperson doesn’t understand this and the actual benefits of these types of tests more on this in a moment simply aren’t as marketable.

Wisdom Panel fully states they can tell you if your cat is a Scottish Fold or a Scottish Straight mix, though… even though these are literally the same breed, born into the same litter, the only difference being one lacks the deleterious fold mutation.

So I had both of these done for my little monster because what is good about these tests is that they test for 40+ inherited disorders, they also test for various coat and physical traits which is of interest to myself as someone with an interest in feline genetics… and yes, I was curious what breed results they would spit out because I wanted to have a giggle.

Basepaws defined him as 76.95% Western with 25.01% of that being “Broadly Western” followed by 18.07% Siberian, 8.33% Maine Coon, 8.24% American Shorthair, 7.01% Russian Blue, 4.47% Abyssinian, 4.46% Ragdoll and 1.36% Turkish Angora.

In the other categories he was 3.46% Eastern, the full % attributed to Peterbald. He was also 3.46% Persian split between 2.08% Himalayan and 1.38% “Broadly Persian.” He was also 3.91% Exotic split between 2.07% Savannah and 1.84% Egyptian Mau, and lastly 12.22% “Polycat” which is basically undefinable.

Wisdom Panel defined him with a far more minimalist but not less amusing approach and told me he was 78% American Domestic cat, which I believe is their way of saying Domestic Shorthair/Longhair? So correct enough, I suppose…

But the rest of that is 12% Sphynx, 6% Siberian and 4% Scottish Fold.

As for the specific traits you mentioned that made you curious about Naava’s breed… the random-bred Domestic population is capable of immense variety, many breed traits were first identified in stray and feral populations before being selected for and refined into a breed standard and are still readily propagated by the same populations of random-bred cats.

My cat is also very long, and working at a feline exclusive veterinary practice I’ve met a good many long cats of no breed origin. While Maine Coon cats certainly stretch on for days it definitely isn’t a trait isolated to them, Naava just has more and more and more of her to love!

The ear “tufts” are also within the normal range of hair distribution on the ears, some have a more thin coat and some are more generously coated - and extrenal factors can also play a role in this, too!

While random-bred cats can sport some impressive tufts I’m not seeing any on Naava that I would consider falling into that range.

On the left I included a set of photos on the left of Domestic Shorthairs (+ one British Shorthair) with normal “tufts” and on the right I included a set of photos of well-tufted Maine Coon ears sporting the signature length and density.

The paws are a similar situation, some cats just have fluffier paws than others - my guy included, I’m always impressed by his soft tootsies.

And here is a Maine Coon paw from a former patient. He’s fine he just moved.

So the formal diagnosis is that Naava is a wonderful Domestic Shorthair, unlikely to have any Maine Coon in her - or any other breed!

I dont wonder enough to pay for a dna test but I do wonder enough to see if there is some cat breed autistic with all the answers here

1. She is stupid long. Its hard to capture in a picture but she is a long lady. When she sits she looks normal but then she stands up and there is no end to this cat. Tail is also long

2. She does have ear tufts but they are pretty tiny

3. Her paws are pretty hairy, not maine coon hairy by any means as you can see. Maybe other cats ive met just have really naked paws

But as u can see her fur is short (she does have random longer hairs in her chest ect but over all her fur is short) and she doesnt have the maine coon face.

This is just for fun btw, no matter what she has in her she in pain in my ass and I would do a murder for her

Do you have any idea what's up with this cat's white spotting? I honestly feel like it's giving tortoiseshell above all else, but with the lack of red, wonder if the gene failed to show

I’m not getting a tortoiseshell feel from this, the patches are too broad and not mottled. This is certainly a unique white spotting pattern but not to the extent that I would suspect anything strange is going on genetically.
