Hey Sergle, how does one learn how to draw? Like, I am in my 20s, can barely draw a stick figure, and feel overwhelmed whenever I try to look up tutorials. Do you have any advice on how to start?

my Unprofessional advice on how to start in earnest, is to do it the way little kids do when they start learning to draw! which is to not approach it as learning at all. sitting down and scribbling out whatever comes to mind, reading a book or watching a movie and trying to copy the way the characters are drawn. draw a page full of cats. do it while you watch tv. doing all that w/o the Grown Up impulse to be embarrassed that you're new at a skill.

#I don't care if this advice isn't structured- i think this is the more fun way to learn!#I could send you a masterpost with links on tutorials and How Tos and Beginner Guides For Dummies etc but that's not.. the way I think #that it should work.#you could take a class or follow tutorials you find on yt and that's fine too. but like you said #it's overwhelming that way. bc then it feels like homework. and then it feels like there's a Certain Way to do it #and if there's a certain way to do it then that means there's a wrong way to do it.#oh the second part of this advice is to use physical art supplies. digital art is amazing #but traditional art and the practice of putting ink to paper is satisfying in a tactile way that digital art isn't #and you don't have to Set Up any art program to have the exact like. tablet settings you want #idk baby you should just pick up some art supplies that inspire you and get the ball rolling #steal some watercolor from hobby lobby if you must! paint some flowers. or some shit! have fun!#sergle answers

How the hell is all this acrylic paint that I bought for a class I signed up for in 2004 (not a typo) still wet?

#ineffablefool original post #not good omens #i didn't *take* the class because i dropped it after a couple weeks #it was a hands-on art class where everyone could wander around and chat while they worked and play music on the lil boombox etc #UNLESS you crossed over into Too Much Wandering Around Chatting territory in which case the instructor's actual stated official policy #was to take points off your grade for it #without telling you he was doing so #everyone was just supposed to Know where the line was and there would be no feedback by which we might adjust our behavior along the way #which NOOOO THANKS i was not interested in that kind of nightmare for 3 hours every Thursday or whatever it was #but i'd already bought the supplies #which can apparently keep just fine for twenty years #(i am pondering maybe making some paste paper #because i bought some fancy paper for endpapers but none of it really goes with the book i'm binding #and i read that you just need acrylic paint and the patience to stir boiled starch #which i might not have the latter but i do somehow still have the former)#ineffablefool mentions bookbinding

Alriiiiight post time. Finished the first project of my first illustration class. The prompt was flora and fauna which I ran with, ngl. I chose an orange tree sapling paired with an epaulette shark. Pretty fun to make but pretty nerve racking not fucking it up bcs of how fine and small the details are. BUT I DID IT and I'm pretty happy with it. :)

over the past 7 or so years I've spent all my time teaching myself a style of drawing digitally which I can't translate to traditional art using pencils bc the way my digital brushes behave is a lot more like paint but at the same time I can't use paint well either because the way I stack colours is more similar to pencils. I really did great there 🙏

Im doing a minor in fine arts and am having to do a bunch of 300+ classes and I was wondering if any artists have any suggestions on carrying cases or bags that they use to transport art supplies since I think throwing everything into my main backpack is a tragedy waiting to happen.
