Signups Open

Signups are officially open, you can now throw your name into the ring! And signups for what, do you ask?

During Aufest Battleship, teams score points by gifting participants fan works— art, fic, web weaves, or podfic. Depending on the round, you either gain points by word count/complexity of art in the gift, or you gain points by scoring "hits" on a bingo board of different tags by posting a gift that uses that tag. During a boss battle you might help your team by gifting someone full colour art with multiple figures in it, and during a tag board round you might edge ahead by gifting someone a fic with "only one bed". Gain points as a team by gifting to people, aiming to be the first to defeat your word count bosses and clear your tag boards!

But how do you know what to gift people? You want the gifts to be good ones, nobody wants to hand someone a gift and then they go— I don't watch these guys or like these tags 🙄! And that's where the signups come in. During signups, you fill out "requests" on ao3 which lets people know which relationships and characters you like, whether you would be open to podfic and/or art and/or web weaves and/or fic, which major archive warnings it's okay to gift you, which of those tags on the tag boards you like, and which tags or themes you absolutely do NOT want. Love major character death angst? You can sign up with that in your signup, and then when a team is trying to hit the major character death tag, they know you'd be a good person to gift to! Absolutely do not want major character death in your gifts? This is how you tell people do NOT gift that to you.

Signing up in the Ao3 collections lets the mods know that you want to both get and give gifts, so in about a week they will place you on a team. You can sign up to the all-ages signup here (which means you won't get or make any e-rated gifts), 18 plus signup here (which means gifts you make and gift can be any rating, including e-rated— minors can't sign up in this collection). During signups, you can only use tags that have been nominated into the tag set, so if someone is looking for bedrock bros requests because they know they want to make a bedrock bro gift to hit the "space au" tag and they need someone to gift it to, they won't have to sort through a whole bunch of tags spelled slightly different ways or with the names in different orders that mean the same thing. There is only going to be one bedrock bros tag official spelling that is going to be easily searchable. So if you tried to enter a tag and you can't find it, you can nominate relationship tags here. RTD please for the love of god let other writers take the wheel more often

At this point in time if there are any writers from the RTD2 era I’d trust as a showrunner it would probably be the writer of today’s episode

The love for Doctor Who’s history, the integration of diversity and relevant stories to the current world we live in and of voices often unheard, even the mystery boxes—all were executed extremely well imo, and non-disruptively as well (which RTD doesn’t always execute very well)

And the resolution of mercy and love, the appreciation of normal everyday people, and the approach to the doctors personal pain, were fantastic too

It hit every beat that the best Doctor Who episodes hit

concepts that take things we know and make them external and otherworldly

Obviously I’m just going off this one episode but all of the above feel like important things to be able to understand and weave in smoothly for a showrunner and on average this was one of the strongest this era that was able to include and execute them all.

Plus no white people except for the doctors past incarcerations in archive footage! About damn time!

It was just wonderful to see her re-legitimized in a post-Chibnall era. And that nod to “a story that might still be finished one day” is interesting.

It could be a hint towards Mrs. Flood being from The Doctor’s original dimension like I theorized by reminding people of that story, or it could just be a loving acknowledgment of the first official black Doctor in an episode celebrating black history and culture, and affirming her part in the doctors history alongside all the white people.

Or it could be both! Or neither! You never know. But I wouldn’t be against RTD picking up some of those threads Chibnall didn’t really seem to understand the full potential of. I really enjoyed his use of the Doctor being “adopted” by the Time Lords in season 1 and his use of the Flux in the 60th Anniversary specials.

(though I am still pissed he went back to Last of the Time Lords crap when The Doctor was already the only one of his kind due to where they were revealed to have originally came from, and I find the idea of Gallifreyan refugees far more interesting than returning to a fully no time lord status quo. Been there, done that.)

febuwhump 2024 survey results

has it been six months since febuwhump? yes. yes it has. nevertheless, here's the cold hard data (analysis) of the survey from febuwhump 2024: feb five.

firstly, this year was our most popular yet! with 1417 works in the official collection across 329 fandoms, we made (and shared) 103 fics more than 2023, and 770 more than my first year running febuwhump in 2021! this isnt even including all the art and fics posted to tumblr, or wasn't shared during the event, which would put our total so much higher!

the prompt list had 4000+ notes and i received 115 responses to the survey.

there were 62 people in the hall of fame, up from 51 in 2023.

the blog hit 2,683 followers, up from 1,946 at the end of the 2023 event.

across two independant check, based on the average word count of 2,000 words per fic in the 2024 collection, and aware of the multi-chapter fics (some of which were finished after the event), it is estimated that 2.8 million words were written for febuwhump 2024. which is just. fucking insane.

now, onto the survey results!

firstly: in what way did you participate in Febuwhump this year?

with extra write-ins not pictured, fanfiction was the overwhelming winner with 92 responses (82.6%), followed by original fiction (22.6%) and artwork (11.3%). interesting to me personally is the 4 responses who wrote poetry and the not-pictured 1 response who created web-weaving! which is very cool and i would like to see it.

fandoms

according to the survey:

the most popular fandoms written for were the star wars universe and legend of zelda universe (8/115 responses)

21 responses included original fiction

the majority of responses also referenced more than one fandom, meaning less people stuck to a single fandom or topic the entire time.

according to the collection:

21 anime/manga fandoms were represented

51 books/literature fandoms were represented, 12 being specific star wars subseries

24 RPF fandoms were represented, including bands and minecraft servers

the most popular fandoms written about in the collection were:

star wars (all media types) - 253 works

star wars: the bad batch - 80 works

original work - 56 works

why and how

next, there were a lot of really lovely responses about why participants took part in febuwhump, a few favourite and repeated responses being that it seemed fun, they'd done it before and so wanted to do it again, and they liked to write about their favourite characters suffering. also, multiple people have been doing it for three of the four years i've been running it (of five total), and several were encouraged by friends!

the majority of participants discovered febuwhump through tumblr, the admin's tumblr, ao3 fics and discord servers. a handful said there's apparently a google doc floating around that houses a whump event calendar. i would be interested in seeing that if anyone's got it.

did you participate in Febuwhump 2020, 21, 22 or 23?

the majorty of respondants were new comers to febuwhump at 66.1% "no" to 33.9% "yes". the majority of comparisons to previous years referenced a noticably bigger community, more interaction on the blog, and the admin being more "confident" (oh, you guys), however several noted that the prompts felt more repetitive or samey this year than they did previously.

are you a Febuwhump completionist or participant?

a fairly even split, 51.3% of participants didn't finish compared to the 48.7% who did. however, only 88.1% of those completionists submitted to the hall of fame.

for those who didn't complete, the most common amount of prompts completed was 2 (13.6%), 3 (11.9%) and 12 or 6 (6.8%).

the most common place to share prompt fills was tumblr (74.8%), ao3 (72.2%), or choosing not to share at all (7%). several write-in responses said that they were planning to share in the future but hadn't yet. and while 76.4% of people submitted to the ao3 collection, those who didn't claimed it to be because the fics weren't ready to be shared on time, they weren't following the rules so didn't add to the collection, an inability to find the collection on ao3 (i swear i'm working on it) or shyness/fear.

what went well/even better if:

the only actual criticsm of the event received was that the blog was posting in a "spam"-like way, to the point that the participant almost unfollowed (and another suggested a reblog tag so it could be ignored easier if people didn't want to see the works throughout the month).

several comments asked for a later deadline for submission to the collection/hall of fame, which is going under advisement, but the current position is that by doing so, it makes the event a different event. there are no stakes to actually create once a day if, at the end of it, you actually get 2 weeks of extra time.

another couple mentioned there being too many dialogue prompts and vague prompts. this will be considered during the next voting period and prompt collation - potentially, if i allowed less dialogue prompts into the final 100 vote, less would make it through to the official 28, however the voting itself is out of my hands (unless voter fraud occurs once again).

the main suggestion for improvement (8 times out of 44 suggestions) was for an additional mod to help with reblogging more. (which imo flies in the face of the "spamming" from earlier, but there is surely a middle ground). this is likely to not happen, because i like running the event alone, despite the major burnout i receive every single year without fail. but thanks for your concern lol.

on discord:

31.3% of participants were in the discord server (which, this year, ignored the first year's 100 user cap and had 172 total users).

43.6% of people who didn't join the server did so because they hadn't heard of it, while the majority didn't join because they were either shy (the minorty) or don't use/like discord (the vast majority). i don't know if tumblr still does groupchats and if that would be a viable alternative, or if there is another forum/chat location that would work better (or to have in tandem), but i am open to suggestions.

of the people who were in the channel, most (33.3%) used it "rarely", followed by "most days" (25%) and "for half the month" (22.2%)

the majority of responses wanted next year's colour scheme to either be red or green, but shout out to everyone who wanted orange, the person who said "children's hospital" and the other person who gave me this specific hex code: #4BEC13

which is vile, but also another vote for green.

HALESTORM Shares Official Music Video For 'Darkness Always Wins'

HALESTORM has released the official DJay Brawner-directed music video for "Darkness Always Wins", a slowly building, cinematic hard rock anthem that marked the Grammy-winning band's first release of 2025. The song, helmed by Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb, was the first to be revealed from HALESTORM's sixth album, "Everest", due on August 8 on Atlantic Records.

"'Darkness Always Wins' is not a song of hope, nor is it a song of despair," said HALESTORM frontwoman Lzzy Hale. "It is reality. History repeating. Evil prevails and the good depart first. But we are not doomed as long as we persist and keep our fires burning. The war may not be won in this lifetime. But our mission is to pass the torch so that those who follow have a light to fight with."

In a social media post, HALESTORM guitarist Joe Hottinger wrote about "Darkness Always Wins": "We wrote this down in Savannah, GA. It was the first song we wrote for what became the album. It was like a test session… we went down there to see how it was working with Dave Cobb. Wrote and recorded this in two days at his then new studio. It was the beginning of a beautiful relationship that turned into a beautiful album."

In late May, HALESTORM released the official music video for the "Everest" title track, consisting of a variety of clips of humans on the brink and imminent explosions, both literal and metaphorical. Interspersed with the vignettes is a rage-fueled, passionate performance by the band.

"Our song 'Everest' is the summit of everything we've fought for — every scream, every scar, every triumph," Lzzy stated at the time. "This album is us, louder and bolder, and more brutally honest than ever, standing tall in the face of the storm."

Last month, HALESTORM kicked off a tour in Europe supporting the legendary IRON MAIDEN. Following that run, HALESTORM will perform at BLACK SABBATH's final show on July 5, and then they'll travel back to the U.S. to tour with VOLBEAT. In September, they'll kick off the "nEVEREST" North American tour with Lindsey Stirling and APOCALYPTICA.

In a recent interview with Cutter's Rockcast, Lzzy spoke about HALESTORM's songwriting and recording sessions with Cobb, known for his previous collaborations with the likes of Sammy Hagar, Slash, GRETA VAN FLEET and RIVAL SONS. Regarding the musical direction of the band's follow-up to 2022's "Back From The Dead", Lzzy said: "It's really hard to describe this one. We did the record with Dave Cobb, which is a new producer for us. His ADHD mixed very well with our ADHD. But we didn't do it traditionally the way we always do these albums. First day, we walked in and I always have, like, whatever, a ton of half-written songs or full-written songs, or, 'Here's a riff or whatever' — you come in with your bag of tricks. And Dave Cobb says, 'Oh, we're not gonna do any of that.' And I'm, like, 'What do you mean?' He's, like, 'We're not doing demos. I hate demos. What we're gonna do is we're gonna start and we're gonna write, and as we're writing, we're recording at the same time.' So that's what we did. The first day we actually ended up writing our first single that'll be coming out soon. But, yeah, we started, like, 'Okay, who's got a line?' 'Oh, I have this that I thought of yesterday.' 'Cool. That'll work. Let's go.' Set up the drums, set up the guitar, here's the vocals. And so we would be recording while we were writing it, and then we would get done and we would move on to the next day. And so there are songs that don't even have a click track to them or a guide because we forgot."

Lzzy continued: "There's so many different elements of songs that we used to write when we were kids, but, obviously, as adults — a lot of that feeling. It was kind of an emotional rollercoaster. There's also, I think, some of the heaviest songs we've ever written on there, some really beautiful mid-tempos. A lot of personalities that I've always wanted to kind of put on a record, but I never really had the freedom or time to, because usually when we do a HALESTORM record, it's, like, 'Okay, we have to have all the songs picked. We have to have them rehearsed.' We go in and kind of do it like an assembly line. Like, 'Okay, you do the bass, do the drums, do the guitar, do the vocals, and we're good.' So there's no time to really like sit with things before they're, like, 'Okay, we've already decided we're gonna do that.' And so the freedom and kind of the nerve-racking kind of element of the fact that there wasn't really a plan ended up being the special sauce on this album, because we were just chasing everything that got us excited. And if it wasn't a 'hell yeah', it was a 'hell no'. So there's nothing on there on this album that we don't feel complete ownership over. There's nothing on this album that anybody forced us to do. There's nothing on this album that isn't part of our personalities."

Elaborating on why the new HALESTORM album feels like it is a return to the band's roots in a way, Lzzy said: "My bass player said it yesterday. He's, like, 'It's kind of like this long road to the beginning,' 'cause all of the guys at one point in time said this really feels like we're back in our parents' basement again and we're hustling and we're trying to figure out how to write songs on the radio. But we have all this knowledge now. So everything ended up coming together so incredibly well. But it was almost like the reverse, that the music was telling us what to do and not us trying to like shoehorn anything in.

"I'm telling you, man, — it is the most HALESTORM record we've ever done," Lzzy added. "It is the first time in the 20 years we've been on Atlantic Records that we have not felt lorded over in regarding to making records, because usually it's time crunch. Somebody's always there being, like, 'Oh, we can't do that.' 'Oh, you probably shouldn't say that.' 'What about this thing?' And that kind of thing. So it usually becomes like a project, like a group project.

"We didn't do it in Nashville — we did it in Savannah, Georgia, locked in a house in the middle of nowhere, next to a river," Hale revealed. "The guys and I would wake up like around 11:30 a.m., we would start recording and we wouldn't stop until 4:00 a.m. And then we would annoy the hell out of the engineer who was trying to sleep with playing on the proper keyboard and coming up with weird stuff. But we were unsupervised in the best way, and it was all about, who are we now? Who were we then? This is our story. For me, when I listen to this album, it's my personal opus — all the things that I've gone through in my life, both dark and not. There's more questions than answers. It's not just me giving myself a pep talk, like 'I'm the fire', 'I'm back from the dead.' It's like I'm dealing with a lot of my reality and a lot of the reality of the world in my own way. And then it's also our story as a band, and you can really hear it in the music and in the lyrics. So I'm so excited for people to hear it. And it's to the point where it's, like, I don't even really care if anybody likes it because all four of us are, like, 'This is our favorite album we've ever done.'"

EVENT SUMMARY

Following their excommunication from the ton lead by the House of Thorpe, the Marquess and Marchioness invite all of high society to their estate in Nottingham to mend their reputation for two nights. To prove their fortune, they revel in their greatest inheritance of the estate on the countryside kicking off with a private invitation to the House of Whitlock. Beginning with a hunt, they remind the ton of their skill and encourage to work together. The next and final night of their extravagant hosting is concluded with a Midsummer Night's Dream ball featuring a performance of the thrilling play by William Shakespeare by the King's Theatre and the Royal Opera House.

GUIDELINES

The event officially begins for the House of Sinclair and House of Whitlock on Monday, 3/24 at 12 pm EST where they have been invited out three days earlier than the rest of the ton.

The event begins for all other muses and noble houses on Wednesday, 3/26 at 12 pm EST. The first part of the event is the hunt in the woodlands of the estate with more delicate affairs taking place closer to the property to entertain other guests.

Please do not post any ball threads until Friday, 3/28 as there is a surprise in store for the ton. *edit on 3/25, please do not post any threads ending or leaving the sinclair ball and keep your muse on property until at least 3/28.

The event will end on Wednesday, 4/2 at 12 pm EST.

You can continue non-event threads but please prioritize event threads.

IN-CHARACTER PARTICIPATION & TASK

Participation in the event is mandatory.

The task for this event is to post your character's outfit to prove they are the best dressed of the ton. This can be a graphic, collage, moodboard, whatever you would prefer. The task is optional for this event.

their travel back to the countryside, whispers of Lady Whistledown being present to spy on them, as last minute visit to the modiste to pack all their clothing despite only being in the countryside for two nights, a carriage mishap, getting lost in the woods during the hunt, lying about being a perfect shot and having to demonstrate, beginner's luck shooting targets, playing croquet while your brothers are the only one allowed to go off on the hunt, basking in the spring weather, fussing over living quarters during the stay, exploring the sinclair estate, a scandal with an sensual performance through a window for someone to see, a terrible neighbor who snores next door, visiting the bank to collect family jewels making their own debut, missing family jewels, peering around the dark walk to see who is there or participate yourself, the perks of being a wallflower sipping on lemonade, filling up your dance card or holding an empty one, sabotaging another debutante (npc or not but plot with the mun first!), running away from eager mamas, visiting other servants at the estate or entertaining the other footman, looking for the scandal author, dispelling rumors set by lady whistledown, working class muses having a celebration of their own in the forrest, taking the place of a footman or a servant and sneaking inside, any servants who have come with their employers who have wandered from the quarters and into the estate to explore, royal theatre or royal academy of the arts characters running lines with nobles batting their lashes, a last minute disaster of an understudy taking on a main role, getting lost in an interactive performance with the theatre, getting stuck in branches by the skirts of your dress, taking a ride on a unicorn after swearing you can ride only to fall, twisting an ankle dancing for attention or actually injuring yourself, debating a proposal, making a courtship known to the ton, etc!

DETAILS TO KEEP IN MIND

The ton will be traveling to Nottingham in the countryside to spend two nights at the Sinclair estate. They will each be assigned living quarters with servants staying on another wing of the house with the household staff, the exception being lady's maids who will stay with their household. Actors and working class will have their own quarters as they will be assisting with the entertainment for the event.

The hunt will be the first gathering at the event. Men of the ton are expected to participate, and women are welcome to but be mindful of the scandal of it. Muses not participating in the hunt can engage in other activities and interactions on the property.

Royal Opera House & King's Theatre have been commissioned to perform a Midsummer Night's Dream at the ball.

The ballroom will be decorated for the event in dark greenery to resemble a forrest with moody undertones accented by gold. In the shadows of the night, candlelight will set even the smallest sparkle ablaze so come dressed in your best. Ivy hands from the ceiling and every doorway to feel as though you are entering a new world. This fantasy does not end at the ballroom, though, as the gardens of the estate holds a performance and horseback riding with unicorns. Engage in whispers of the Shakespearean tale across different corners of the gardens where the ensemble are split apart to surprise guests with different scenes throughout the night.

year in review

wanted to reflect on the things i've made this year. here goes nothing!

Games

ghost story is a point-and-click mystery made in unity as my final project for code coven's IGM course!! I genuinely think we managed a pretty solid concept and execution in two weeks, and if you like murder mysteries, this is for you!

lungs to burn is a short poem game made for the may 2023 bitsy jam, talking about wildfires, grief, and queer connection. featured in both indiepocalypse #43 and hand eye society's SUPERFestival. in general, the response i got for this one was kinda overwhelming (and a little confusing), but i'm glad it resonated with people! still very proud of it.

no postage required is another bitsy game, this time made for the trans game dev server jam. a somewhat-sequel to the end is near; or a letter to a lost love. there are definitely things i'd redo with this one but all in all, not too bad!

Zines

Kriah: a personal zine about some of my experiences with antisemitism over the years. definitely a heavy read but honestly i stand by it just as much as when i wrote it? idk as someone who has a lot of trauma from years of antisemitic harassment, this has been a WEIRD fucking year, and it's weird to revisit something i wrote at the beginning of the year that feels even more relevant now.

how to the hold the pain is a collage/web weaving zine i did for this year's blaseball zine jam, using blaseball narratives as a way to view crip theory and vice versa. i spent a LOT of time reading through articles for this (both academic and other) and every second of it was worth it. genuinely one of my favourite things i made all year.

Fic

i wrote a lot less fic this year than the previous two for a multitude of reasons but i still put out a few bangers!! here's a brief selection of my favourites:

swallow your guilt (blaseball, 13.2k), a story about the new seattle garages, the old chicago firefighters, grief, and finally growing up, all through the biased eyes of one baby "ruthless" triumphant

spectroscopy, or a snapshot of a light and that which it absorbs (blaseball, 2.6k), the coda to my bright zimmerman series. i technically wrote this in the fall of 2022 but posted it in march so it still counts.

somewhere there's a fire burning (rogue one, 1k), a character study of bohdi rook between the destructions of nijedha and scarif. my first non-blb fic! and still a banger imo

i play dead, come alive (hatchetfield, 12x100), character study of stephanie lauter during the events of npmd. now officially my most popular fic and honestly i'm good with that!!! i think it's a solid little fic.

just all of corona borealis. i did some good stuff about grief and growth this year y'all.

the back half of this year was mostly filled with portfolio updating, job hunting, and just generally struggling with everything lol but!!! i still made some cool stuff and am hoping to get more back to making stuff next year! it's where i feel most at home. have fun checking these out if you do!

caitlin i know you said there was no pressure for me to answer this ask (which i very much appreciate <3) but i am answering it anyway because i was actually planning on sending you an ask with a 'behind-the-scenes' look of my creating my first web weave! i put it below the cut because (as is typical for me) my explanation became long as hell!

first of all, as i really looked at the lyrics my idea evolved from just being focused on the 2024 season to their whole lives. the second verse was just too perfect to not include the year of mutual horror (2019).

i'm so glad you loved the suit jacket photos! i genuinely had SO MANY options to chose from (e.g. other photos from their karting days, photos from their time at the ffsa karting academy, the 2015 boat photos, 2016 paddock photos [tons of these to choose from], the 2017? photo of them flying post-brazil gp, etc.) but ultimately i went with these for no particular reason (also apparently a number of awkward suit photos to choose from).

i was so close to picking one of the monza 2020 photos with the confetti falling gently on pierre because i think they're so beautiful. but 1) i couldn't find one with the quality i desired and 2) the parallels of both pierre and esteban looking to the sky with their winner's trophy in hand were too tempting (i was also tempted to find pictures from this but alas).

for the crash photos, i intentionally avoided australia 2023 or monaco 2024 for...reasons. went with france 2018 because it amuses me that the grand return of the french gp ended in disaster for the french drivers and hungary 2023 because after my in-the-moment frustration i can find the comedy in it. also (most importantly for me anyway) both of them were racing incidents and not the fault of one or the other!

i'm so glad you noticed the charles inclusion (i knew you would <3). it was definitely intentional from my part because i will ALWAYS be a proponent of charles (and lance, mick, jack, etc.) being semi-unwillingly roped into the pierresteban of it all and hoping those two get their shit together and actually communicate for once in their lives (and being their biggest supporters once they do)! almost used this photo too but i ultimately thought it would be best to keep the focus on pierre and esteban (not the three of them - sorry charles!).

and finally the lyrics from the chorus. i was honestly very proud of myself of using photos from the official announcement of the two becoming teammates for 2023 and then photos with their new teammates for (at least the start of) 2025 - perfect bookends for the pierresteban teammates era! also it was a happy accident that pierre and jack's photo was on the left and esteban and ollie's photo was on the right at the end. i didn't have a particular order in mind but then i realized once the photos were inserted that it looked like pierre and esteban were still next to each other...of course it had to stay!

there were some lines where i was tempted to use 3-4 photos but i decided to keep it uniform. the desire for uniformity is also why i ultimately decided to not use article quotes (also because i either couldn't find the actual quotes or because i would have to transcribe it myself - otherwise i would've used this and pierre's 2018 beyond the grid interview among others).

ok I’m back to yap more about “Idol” by Yoasobi!!! probably there will be a torrent of these posts in the next week hehe…

so, there’s this one short couple of lines that I’m having a lot of difficulty translating to encapsulate as much as I can of what’s going on there. it’s

Sou tan tan to/Dake do san san to/Miesou de mienai himitsu wa mitsu no aji

Which in the official English translation was:

So unconcerned/ Although you brightly glow/ Any seemingly unveiled secrets are as sweet as honey

Aaand that’s enough to go on someone’s dash. More rambling below the cut!

Essentially, this section is attempting to capture Ai’s casual yet charming approach. Apparently, she doesn’t have to put in all that much work, and the fans love her. So far, the song has opened with a challenge issued to you to try and discover Ai’s secrets and a promise that you won’t able to, you’ll just be left in awe of this perfect idol. Then it’s touched on her presence in the media - her fans desperately beg her for answers to the most innocuous small details about her daily life, yet she always refuses to tell them a thing. Then we launch into this section!

It was interesting, but I didn’t fully understand it? “seemingly unveiled”? I just couldn’t figure out what that was supposed to mean…

So I bounced around other English translations, paying attention to how this section is translated. A lot try and hold onto this aspect at the end about secrets, a lot hold on to this idea of “honey sweetness”, but the beat or the flow almost always got a bit awkward around there. But I only got it when I started listening to AmaLee’s cover on YT ( https://youtu.be/iN0-dRNsmRM?si=HrlQ4ZMcrRArzVvd probably my single favorite ver), which translates it as “And all the lies she weaves / Brilliantly / Are sweet just like honey”.

It’s divergent enough that it caught my attention quickly, since it went without mentioning secrets, and yet it elaborated on this same idea… that she’s creating this “web of lies”, intentionally, but they appear to others as carefully hidden secrets that they managed to discover about her.

And other translations seemed to back this up when revisited:

And even later, I encountered this one, which made me more confident as it seemed someone else saw the same thing in this line I did: “So plain to see/ And yet, so brilliantly/ She hides her secrets way too easily, anyone can see” (at this link: https://youtu.be/2jcruC0tmJQ?si=acr7NTa29sJmPTyC)

So from this and more, all these were my takeaways on what these lines were supposed to capture:

In the first two lines, a sense of duality, within the same person. This is preserved within the sound of the original lyrics (Sou tan tan to/Dake do san san to) which is both contrasting and yet unified at the same time. It’s describing the contradictory nature of Ai’s performance, both that witnessing her makes you feel close to her, but she’s got a notably cool and “brilliant” attitude that’s charismatic and makes her celebrity status evident.

In the third… god, so many things

It’s that Ai perfectly controls what you know about her, or what you think you know; you’ve brought these secrets to sight, but it was easy, and they’re small little secrets (of the type that are answers to the questions you were asking earlier), and so it feels like you’ve connected with her on this private level by knowing her secret. Unbeknownst to you, this was Ai’s bait: these “secrets” are just another set of lies she’s telling you, and even the idea that she’s sharing them just with you is another lie she’s telling you, and that’s because it’s all bait. These “seemingly unveiled” secrets are actually lies she’s using to bait you to feeling closer to her and continuing to be her fan and love her, and in return preserve her career as an idol. You might almost catch on to this by how “clear to see/anyone can see” them, but that’s why they’re honey, they’re seductive and sweet bait.

And this interpretation is further backed up because it makes sense of that earlier line, “Even that elusive side/Part of her controlled area”/Nuketeru toko sae kanojo no eria, make sense: her “elusive side” is one only her more devoted fans get to see, since she makes it difficult to find out more about her and leaves out false secrets for the public to find, and it’s all just another bait/façade for her fans to find, another bulwark forming the foundation of her status as the most ultimate, perfect idol.

Anyway. So currently I’ve currently left it as, “She’s so composed / And through it all she glows / Every secret you find, is a candied lie, she crafts so preciously”. Trying to pack all of that meaning into a single line is an IMMENSELY difficult task - my respect for song artists has yet increased!

and like OKAY OKAY the structure is kind of similar to No Place Like Home??? like there is a lot of flashbacks and smutty moments and the characters definitely have that Soulmate vibe (soulmates but we are doing everything we can to avoid the inevitable type vibe)

also - I don't think you NEED to know Criminal Minds for it to make sense? because it's mostly focused on Spencer. and the references to actual Criminal Minds episodes... I could explain them to you (cause I am just realizing that there is references to JJ shooting dogs (in self defence) that would sound SO WEIRD out of context).

as i mentioned in another post about this bracket:

first off, this has been insane, as an eclipse federation fan. lifesteal is NOT a large fandom--it's not as small as many, but just to get this far in a cross-SMP tournament has been insane.

so, if you're intrigued by how well we've been doing and are interested in checking lifesteal out, i have some resources for that!

eclipse federation is from s4 of lifesteal. each season is basically completely independent of each other, aside from occasional references, and each takes place on a different world (so, more like empires/hermitcraft/traffic life seasons than dsmp ‘seasons’). if you're interested in lifesteal generally speaking, aroaceacacia as a playlist with Literally Every Lifesteal S4 video, which is how I personally got into the fandom for it; that said, while this is the most Complete way to get into lifesteal s4, it’s quite long (50ish hours), and most lifesteal videos will typically explain the premise of the server, relevant characters or events, etc., in every video, so you can also jump around or start halfway through or generally speaking do whatever you want and you’ll do fine. There’s also the “choose a POV and watch start to finish from that POV” strategy, which also works! eclipse federation consists of PrinceZam (lifesteal s4 playlist), ItzSubz (lifesteal s4 playlist), and Vitalasy (lifesteal s4 playlist).

HOWEVER, not only this, but I’ve actually created a couple propaganda playlists for this tournament specifically, to help people who want to get into Eclipse Federation specifically!

Here’s the short version of the playlist for Eclipse Federation, which includes only their official edited videos, starting with Zam’s betrayal of Team Awesome and continuing through the finale. It’s also got a few videos not by them that serve as backstory, context, or which affect some of the eclipse federation members but not all of them. It’s 6 hours total, and with a fairly short average video length (15 minutes).

Here’s the longer version of the playlist for Eclipse Federation, which includes a mix of their edited videos, my favorite VODs, and fan-edited clips of VODs. Because it includes VODs, it’s got the most content and context, but it’s also significantly longer (35 hours total) and has the longest average video length (about an hour, but there’s a huge variation, since it’s a mix of 15-minute videos and 3-hour VODs). There are cinematics in this one (wings of freedom + pits of hell)! Check them out!!

(You may notice that this is labeled the 'medium’ playlist. The 'long’ one is one for my personal use; it has 150+ hours of exclusively VODs and assumes you have pretty extensive context on lifesteal, so I’m not linking it here.)

I will also add, as a content warning for both playlists: the story of eclipse federation draws very heavily on themes of in-game suicidality, suicide, and grief; c!Subz and c!Vitalasy both kill themselves in very plot-relevant ways, c!Vitalasy’s suicide is made fun of by other server members and seen as him “just doing it for attention”, and c!Zam is frequently suicidal, consistently takes actions with a reckless disregard for his own life, and attempts (but does not complete) suicide. Vitalasy also has moments of being OOC upset over how things are going IC, which personally got to me at times.

I also wrote a fic for Round 3, made a collage for Round 4, and I'm currently working on another fic for Round 5. What will I do for Round 6, if we get there, or if we win? Who knows! If you vote for us, maybe you'll find out!

Eclipse Federation:

i dont like them. they ruined my life. Subz and Vitalasy had already partnered in previous seasons but this one, Vitalasy ended up leaving for a few months, leaving Subz alone, and Zam ended up getting close to him after immense trauma at the hands of his former teammates. Zam has done SO many wrongs, including to Subz himself and Subz STILL took him in and made him join Eclipse Federation after Zam died 14 times in a row and got banned then revived by the same player who's been killing him all this time. And it could've been perfect but no, Zam had betrayed his previous team due to them using dupes via exploits, and now Eclipse Federation ALSO has exploits! And he decided that yeah his morals were more important than being loved! And so he murders Vitalasy when he's at his most vulnerable point, lets everyone gaslight him into thinking Vitalasy is an irredeemable evil monster who will never change, even as Vitalasy SAID he was ready to change before the betrayal even happened, Eclipse threw out their whole revenge plans because of Zam's positive influence and he just broke everything. Subz couldn't be with Zam but also couldn't see himself at Vitalasy's side, leaving him alone. Vitalasy hated Zam and yet never killed him or hunted him down, despite Zam acting like he did. And when Vitalasy left, banning himself off from the server, Zam had some time alone to think and realized he fucked up SOOOO bad. And Subz revived Vitalasy and told him to kill him. And ban him. His last wish. His Deliverance. And to make up with Zam. And Vitalasy tried, and they kind of did make up over Subz's death, but then Zam was like "actually im going to kill everyone and destroy the server now. because i want subz back and also because i always do extremely drastic things when i don't need to because i have unchecked mental illnesses i refuse to get help for". And surprisingly when Subz came back he didn't like that! And they ended in tragedy! Eclipse is fucked up. It's a trio that's always about the absence of one person, it's a team that could only happen in one timeline and it was doomed from the very start. But the love was there. It made everything worse, truthfully. But it was there. And that matters. Also as a fun fact Zam himself on twitter has referred to eclipse as a throuple, which is not canon but that's pretty funny. he also stated on stream he didn't want to get therapy because it'd ruin his lifesteal character. and there was a saga where they would "marry" (challenge lost kinda shenanigans) and zam was the only one happy about it. he's not normal. there's something wrong with him. love that for him though sorry for the block of text. I really dislike them. They're my beloveds :3

mermaid lore- sunlight mermaids

okay so in light of the mermaid/siren lore i posted a bit ago, i wanna talk more about mermaids and the different kinds you’ll find!! this isn’t everything about each type of mermaid bc that’ll be split into separate posts (i.e. the title will be “mermaid lore-sunlight mermaids pt II)

so it’s been established that mermaids are not shifters, but more along the lines of vampires in their relationship to magic and humans.

mermaids are found in every ocean, sea, inlet, etc. basically in every natural body of water, so there’s more than likely gonna be a mermaid(s) living there!

today’s topic is gonna be ocean mermaids and the first light layer!

ocean mermaids exist in every layer humans have discovered, explored and then some. if u aren’t familiar with the ocean layers, here is a lil graphic for u!

we’ll be focusing on the epipelagic zone mermaids or the “sunlight mermaids”

sunlight mermaids

these types of mermaids live in colonies in the epipelagic zone. they are social, love speaking to other humans, and are extremely active.

environment and diet

sunlights prefer shorelines, often staying close to a reef or some sort of marine structure. this allows for protection, hiding spots, and daily activities.

they eat mainly sea life, but can survive on coral, kelp, seaweed and fruits and vegetables. please do not feed them bread.

behavior

they are most active in the daytime. hunting, gathering, weaving, etc. are all done during this time. they enjoy swimming with beach goers, beating waves with surfers, and are really friendly. some of them were human before too, so the connection to humanity can ease any homesickness they might feel.

sunshine mermaids live in groups. they’re incredibly social and are community-based and oriented. there isn’t really a “leader”, but many have noted one or two mermaids that seem to handle the communication and larger decisions in the colony. there are many colonies that do have official leaders, and they’re voted on by the group as a whole.

the young are kept in the coral and reefs for protection, with several of the largest mermaids as guards. agility and speed is what is needed in hunting, not size.

appearance

these mermaids are brightly colored, ranging in a vast array of rainbow. some of these mermaids are influenced by their parents and the food they ate the most as a youngling (similar to flamingos being pink bc of the amount of shrimp they consume). their hair is all different colors and textures.

most notable features of these mermaids: glowing eyes, non-webbed hands, jewelry, thick and muscled tails. gills, but can breathe air

there’s not much of a size difference between male and female mermaids. some mermaids are both male and female, and some are neither. there’s currently no formal explanation, and it isn’t important in the slightest.

relationship to the magical world (general)

while mermaids are not land dwelling, they are still people and must be treated as such. they are part of the department and have their own representatives, as well as their own laws and rules to keep them and the human population protected.

a lot of mermaids work in tandem with marine biologists. the historic S.H.E.L.L. treaty immensely repaired the strained relationship the water magical world and the land magical world had.

all mermaids groups share a seat, and will vote on who is the representative. this is similar to how their respective layer groups work!

customs

storytelling is one of the most important aspects of light mermaids. since they don’t have a written language, their history is all passed down orally and by song. each colony has one orator. they have been trained from a younger age by the previous orator. they must have excellent memory and show an aptitude for storytelling.

in order to be selected by the orator, the young go through rigorous testing: recitations, singing, and whatever else the orator chooses. it can take months, even years for the next to be chosen. it is an honorable role to have, and they are heavily protected their entire life.
