We NEED FlowerByte: Addressing the lack of Black Girl Representation in ATSV -

[a MEDIUM length essay addressing how FlowerByte IS NOT a threat to GhostFlower, and how the ship is actually NECESSARY to the ATSV fandom]

and examining the criticism against Miles x Margo:

Remember there's nothing wrong or desperate about people shipping FlowerByte. It's natural, fine, and to be expected.

Because - if you have doubts about FlowerByte - have you ever considered how there's no black girls other than Margo in ATSV? That ISTV features no black girls as reoccurring characters?

That the only two POC female characters - Jess and Rio - are adults in nurturing positions, shown only ever taking care of others?

Up until this point, have you noticed how much black girls are missing from ATSV?

Or did you not realize? Most don't. But black girls do.

Because black girls are one of the only demographics not shown or supported in the ITSV series.

As we know it, we have no young black girl characters that have more than maybe 10 lines. So far we have Gwen's bandmates and Margo.

Black girls are probably the only demographic NOT seeing themselves swinging around.

The only two black women characters are grown women, specifically MOTHER FIGURES. Characters written to aids others through their arcs, saving and comforting in times of need.

That's why I wrote Diane's background as it is. She's a born and raised Black Panther Party member, raise in the meeting house of her local chapter.

She's a black radicalist, and that's the center of her world and character. From her mirroring black disco divas like Diana Ross, to being a Black Panther, I wanted Diane and her world to be unequivocally black.

There's never any scene of a black girl in a Spider-suit, swinging around or saving the day. Not once.

And it's never been mentioned. To most people, it's not a concern.

To most people, the sad reality is - black women aren't a concern. Just side characters.

And that shows. Not only on screen, but in fandom as well.

At no point in ITSV are young black girls given a character in which they can see themselves - not even as background characters, let alone as a romantic interest.

You make think that FlowerByte is silly, because 'they don't really have chemistry, right?'

But there is nothing wrong or silly about black girls wanting to see Miles calling them pretty, or admiring them, or dating them.

Margo truly is the only black girl we even see Miles have a conversation with for the entirety of ATSV - for the entirety of the SERIES thus far.

And chances are - most people reading this didn't notice this. But black girls DO.

Imagine seeing multiple characters of the same race, but different gender as you - but NONE of your gender (nb peeps know what I mean)

Never being called cool, or strong. No gifsets of cool black girls fighting. No black girls in the fanart. Left off posters. Never seen as pretty, never shown as desirable, never having male counterparts consider them.

The message - and damage - it sends to young black girls is clear - even in ATSV.

'You're not a person to be desired or admired. You are a plot device and nothing more.'

It sends the message 'You are not an actual person. You're there to save Gwen, and let Miles escape. After that, get off the screen. Your character will be judged based on how you serve the characters around you. We don't have enough time to flesh you out any further. And we know no one will ask about it.'

Black girls notice how they're one of the only ones who doesn't get a character to wear as a Halloween costume, or as a cosplay. They notice when they see merch and there's none of anyone that looks then them. They notice when their only options are 'genderbent' Miles and Hobie, because most don't see Margo as a main character.

They notice when none of their favorite characters give black girls a second glance, or have crushes on black girls. They notice when the only black women aren't actually stories about BLACK WOMEN. They're stories about white women - with the character being drawn or cast as black.

Example: You'll never see MCU MJ talk about racism or something. Because she's not written as a black girl first. She's written as a MARY-JANE first - and the basis of her story is that and nothing more. Anything about her black identity is seen as at best unnecessary or worse, contradictory to the character of MJ - so her race is left as only a visual element, only a feature of casting, and not a true aspect of her character.

There's literally nothing wrong with Flowerbyte and I admire those that are making works for them.

Black girls deserve every bit of love, and ffs they're CUTE together.

Hobie and Noir get shipped together all the time and they don't even know each other (yet). No one cares. People think it's cute.

But Miles and Margo get shipped together - and suddenly theres a discussion on how 'unlikely' or 'forced' that ship is.

The same with Hobie x Black!readers, or Miles-42 fics - it's often when black women seek to fill their own lack of representation that others even consider them apart of the conversation. And even then - it's to force them back into their place.

'Miles is meant to be with Gwen. That scene meant nothing. They don't have chemistry. You just hate Gwen. You just want them together because she's black'

YEAH, AND? Liking FlowerByte doesn't mean they have it out for Gwen. It means they're desperately looking for representation.

YOU should be calling for that representation. Now that you know, doesn't this lack of representation disturb you? If it doesn't, but FlowerByte does, then I can't help you.

But yeah. Just a friendly reminder, FlowerByte is good for the soul and the fandom.

We as fans of ATSV have to be candid in admitting that the series SEVERELY lacks representation of young black girls, which is A HUGE problem.

The one black female Spider-woman they have had to be CREATED as black, from a white rendition of the character.

So far, Margo is the one and only original black Spider-woman in ATSV.

That needs to change. But until then, let FlowerByte sail on. If you're a Gwiles shipper, you can always double ship. Nothing wrong with it. I suggest maybe you check out some FlowerByte stuff. Maybe you'll like their dynamic, or understand why writers write it a bit more, if not 🤷🏾 hey, you tried.

I think we can all agree though - Miles' got the rizz.

I have been having a really weird experience this summer, which is that I fell in love for the first time. I'm 36, and if you'd asked me if I had ever been in love previously, I would have said "I don't know, maybe? I used to think so but now I'm not sure? What's it mean to be in love?? how would I know if I had or not???" I thought that because I had not experienced it myself, the people who were always saying "oh no, trust me, You Would Know" were all lying or otherwise mistaken. I DID NOT BELIEVE THEM. I was fully like "this is some sort of mass delusion, there's no way that's a thing"

Now that I know that this is something that Exists even if it doesn't always Look Like They Tell You, there's SO many things that make sense to me!!! Whenever I encountered Romance Stuff before, I had no desire to do any of it AND could not comprehend why anyone else would ever want to either. It was this really large experiential disconnect for me. Whether or not I want to do any of those things, I now understand why other people would, if they Were In Love. LIKE I GET IT NOW. IT MAKES SENSE TO ME. I still can't relate to things like people in movies falling in love instantly, but now it's like "oh right, that's a potential state of being that exists," rather than "pretty fucked up that hollywood made Being In Love up to sell more flowers or whatever."

I feel like I'm constantly 24/7 running a software update on my brain that's been overdue to be installed for years or perhaps decades. It's just like "OK YUP UPDATING ALL THESE PROGRAMS AND FOLDERS. THIS WILL TAKE SOME TIME AND DATA BYTES OR WHATEVER, BUCKLE UP!" Pretty sure there's actually one of those little rainbow spinning icons above my head the whole time I'm conscious, like I am some sort of very confused Sim.

This happened to me REALLY SLOWLY, too, so it was like a big blockage in a river, and more and more stuff was just piling up against it, and then the dam broke, and now I'm sitting in the shallows of a giant basin lake under a massive waterfall wringing my hat out and going "woah. they got never before seen types of fish in here"

Who else knew about this??? Unfortunately the answer is: a majority of human beings over a certain age DID in fact know about this, it's just that every time anyone said "this is a way people feel about each other sometimes," I said "hmm. sounds fake." In-cred-i-ble.

Turns out that being in love is just an experience that people can have!! It's just a thing that happens sometimes! Some people have had it happen to them a bunch and some people not at all. It's just A Thing That Can Happen To You. Wtf. WHAT WILL I DISCOVER NEXT????? IT COULD BE ANYTHING !!! WHAT WOULD BE THE FUNNIEST POSSIBLE NEXT THING FOR ME TO REALIZE EXISTS? ONLY TIME WILL TELL. (Can you fucking imagine having this happen to you when you are in your seventies or eighties rather than your mid thirties ????? THAT WOULD BE THE WORLD'S MOST DISORIENTING EXPERIENCE.) Wait guys hear me out on my next fic idea (i say as i havent even finished pt 2 of Flowers For My Darling Sky guys i’m really trying 🥲🥲🥲)

JetByte but like mythology.

I was primarily thinking Greek but then again I do want to have selkies because seals :3.

Basically Jetfire is an outcasted harpy mourning a heartbreak and Sky-Byte is a lone siren mistrustful of the world around him.

Note: Just to clear up any misconceptions, this is not going to be completely accurate. While sirens were originally depicted as birds, I’m going to be using the aquatic depiction of them for Sky-Byte.

Harpies in Greek/Roman mythology were basically agents of punishment for the gods. They commanded the skies, ready to prey on any unfortunate soul that dared to incur their wrath.

However Jetfire was different. He was kind, benevolent, and pacifistic in nature. He preferred peace instead of war which was a quality that made all the other Seekers dislike him immensely. Unfortunately that included Starscream, a mech who he thought was different only for him to cave in to the peer pressure and leave.

Poor Jetfire :(

Sirens on the other hand are elusive and deceptive beings that are widely known to lure sailors to their deaths with their enchanting voice. They are also commonly depicted in groups.

Unfortunately Sky-Byte was alone. Having lost his shiver(a term used to describe a group of sharks) when the mortals began to hunt them, he swore revenge. Now he spends his days alone, taking out any hunting/spearing vessel in the name of his fallen brethren.

Both of them were two individuals that thought they would be alone forever. However fate seemed to have other plans…

Abstract Plural Presences

You know how sometimes, certain people have a certain natural smell to them? Not necessarily unpleasant or unclean, just a thing that you smell and go "ah yes, them". Maybe you remember the brand of perfume they always use and it's forever associated with them. Maybe they use a certain shampoo. Maybe it's a food they cook so often in their house, it stays with them. Maybe it's just them. But there's a sensory thing that's strongly associated with them in some way.

We kind of have that with systemmates. Not a smell always, though. Not really anything more than a thought, or a feeling. An association with certain things, relating to people, but so raw that you feel an abstract emotion more than you really have an "association" or anything similar to a physical, tangible thing. It's just a raw feeling of the essence of your headmate.

Merlin feels like the sun shining through leaves on a warm summer day, the way that the light dapples the grass below. A nice cool drink to go with it--a smoothie or something fruity.

Jayfeather brings to mind pebbles scattered amongst grass. Maybe a river ran through here once--the stones are smooth all the way around, and comfortably warm to the touch after basking in the morning light. You are resting after something stressful. The feeling of knowing what's right and fighting for it, knowing your community will have your back.

Byte feels like an old CRT TV screen. It's been sitting in the attic for a long while, but you don't want to get rid of it--there's too many fond memories. The smell of electricity mixed with blinking lights. Wires hanging from the ceiling.

Trip is the feeling of being far from home. You miss it, but you have a purpose here--wherever that may be. The colour of the sea, ever shifting and changing. An orb, glowing softly.

Vic feels like a forest--dark, and cold. The smell of wet wood that hasn't had rain for a long while. The silvery colours that moonlight seems to bathe everything in. There is no breeze, everything is eerily still. You're glancing around, making sure you can get to wherever you're going safely. The feeling of being alone at night.

Vince's presence, being a split from Vic, feels similar to his. The smell of wet wood is still there, but there's less of a forest and more of just darkness. But the darkness is watching, and it is calculating. Not necessarily malicious, but very, very focused on you. You are aware of how not alone in this darkness you are, but you can't figure out it's intentions. There is also a distinct feeling of bookshelves, bathed in soft light from a candle.

Lux feels like coming home after a long day out, and being greeted with freshly baked treats for you. The colour of amber, held up to the light. The smell of cookies.

Sil makes you think of the void, but not a typical one. It's not nothing, because the void in and of itself is a thing. Is it alive? You don't know if you're alone within it. There is a pinprick of light in the distance, and just as soon as you notice, it flickers out. The vague thought of chains hanging from a ceiling.

Silas's presence feels like the fear of being caught doing something you shouldn't be, and the rush of narrowly getting away. An echoing cavern, but you can't tell what noise is actually causing the echoing off of the walls.

Martin is like a cabin in the woods--far from anyone else, but safe and cosy. Maybe there are bookshelves lining the walls, plants healthy and alive on shelves, reaching for the dim afternoon sun through the window. The feeling of holding a warm beverage in your hands after a long day.

Exeller feels like leaves caught in a warm, spring breeze. A vague smell of mint--maybe mint tea? Small, white flowers amongst the grass. The smell of paper, and the feeling of warmth when you pick it up freshly from the printer.

Bluegaze brings to mind the golden colour of grass after it's been dry for a very long time. Sharing stories with those who were not around to witness them firsthand. The smell of dust and old wood. A barn, with a little white fence around it, slowly being worn away by time.

Crowley feels like a distant campfire in a field. You can't smell smoke, but you can see the warm glow on the horizon. It's dark, the sun has recently set, and it's getting colder. The breeze picks up just a little, but you know you'll soon be able to sit by the fire and relax. He also gives the distinct feeling of wings extending in order to take flight, every feather kept neat and clean.

Filigree is like a bladed weapon--a knife or a dagger--put on a shelf inside of a comfortable house to keep it safe. It's cleaner than it once was, and the light hits it in a certain way that makes it shimmer. It's been taken good care of to keep in good shape.

Sundown emnates darkness. A darkness lit by 100s of tiny, orange-glowing candles. You do not know how you got into this space, and you do not know how to get out. The expanse of void and candles seems to go on forever, with a faint smell of something you can only describe as electricity everywhere you go.

Mystery's presence is the feeling of being dizzy, the kind you get after spinning in circles as a kid for fun, full of laughing. Something sweet like candy, but a flavour filed amongst lost memories--you'll never remember the type of candy it was. A maze you can't quite place the shape of. A faint feeling of a sterile environment, such as a hospital--artifically clean, fake-floral smelling chemicals.

Fleety feels like a memory of panic, but long enough lost that the feelings are stale. A warm bed to curl up and sleep comfortably in. Dim lighting against a tiled floor, a rug placed over it to make it a little less cold.

Lure being around feels like a house in the middle of a desert. Just a single, lone house, amongst an infinitely flat plain of dirt and sand. The houses windows have no glass, and you can't tell if someone lives there. There are a few shrubs outside, and you have to wonder how they get enough water out here, and why they're only around the house.

A lot of us give the feeling of a concept or group of concepts, one that's hard to explain without a lot of words. They're distinct and can only be described through what they bring to mind. Sometimes, the presence changes and someone might bring new associations to mind than the ones they used to, but as all people do, changes happen.

It's not something we see talked about much, if at all. We don't know if anyone else gets these feelings either, but we wanted to share anyway. We like the diversity of plural experiences, and wanted to share a little part of ours with this post.

Ashwick Avenue - A historic ave with old buildings, dimmed streetlights, and a lingering mist.

Cinder Row - A narrow street with a mix of small businesses' and fading neon signs knowns for it's quiet timeless feel.

Vale Street - A long winding road that always seems slick with rain, lined with cafe's record shops and a teahouse that refuses to die out.

Halloway Road - A street that curves through the heart of the city, known for its mix of modern and decayed architecture

Lockewood Drive - A semi-industrial road where tech startups and small shops co-exist.

Whitmoor Street - An area known for its old-world charm, bookstores and flower shops still hold against time.

Novastra Boulevard -

Main Artery of the pulse district. Holographic billboards and glass skyscrapers tower the streets

Notable places:

Veyren Grand Station - The Cities central train hub, packed at all times.

Astrocorp HQ - A cooperate tower belonging to a mega-conglomerate that controls most of Veyren's digital infrastructure

Synthwave Café - a 24 hour coffee shop with neon lit walls and robotic baristas

Project Dome - A massive curved screen, displaying ads, weather, news, and the latest fashion trends in real time.

Orion Street -

A shopping and entertainment hub where the latest tech and fashion is sold.

Notable places:

Oblivion Club - One of the biggest night clubs in Veyren with floors that light up as people dance. The drinks are never ending as well as the friendly company.

Neon Arcade - A retro futuristic arcade where old school gaming collides with VR and newer stylistic games.

Hyper Mart 24 - A fully automated department store with robotic assistance. You think it? They got it!

Starlight Records - A hidden vinyl record shop that still exists despite the digital age

Helix Road -

A tech and business center, home to high end offices, and digital marketing firms.

Notable Places:

Zephyr Towers - A sleek black skyscraper that's a hub for cyber security firm.

Neurolink Labs - A company experimenting with brain-interface technology.

Flux Lounge - High end, invite only social club where executives discuss business over cocktails.

Astra Bar - A bar with digital bartenders and waiters and drinks that glow under blacklight

Stratos Avenue -

Known for media, fashion, and high energy night life.

Notable places:

Veyren Broadcast Center - the city's largest media headquarters, airing new and digital influencers.

Runway 99 - An avant-garde fashion district where models walk beside holograms of the fashions creators.

Pulse plaza - A futuristic square where massive events take place and ads are projected into the skies.

The Grid - A rooftop lounge balcony with a stunning view of the cities skyline.

Synapse Alley -

A gritty underground area filled with hidden bars, black market tech, and cybernetic enhancement shops.

Notable Places:

Echo Bar - A secret jazz bar that Tristan visits from time to time. The only semi-safe place in the alley.

Bytes & Bites - A hacker café where people don't just sell coffee, they sell digital secrets.

The Raven Room - A speakeasy accessible only through a glitched billboard. Where people drank and talked shop over the latest illegal tech.

PawnXchange - A pawn shop for illegal tech, and stolen data drives.

Rainmere Street - A quiet hidden street, nothing to spectacular there home to three story walk ups.

Halloway Lane - A lesser known street where only locals wander, known for its "old world feel"

Wrenford Alley - old abandoned shops with swinging wooden signs and cobblestone road. A relic from the older days.

Bellrose Street - Home to Tristan and his bookshop~!

Dunhaven Street - Home to a small park with a pond and a playground, really only the "natural green" around these days without leaving the city.

Draycott Lane - A small street lined with homes and a few antique and second hand shops.

Easton Bridge - Pedestrian/vehicle bridge leading from the Pulse District to the residential district.

Lennox Street - A bustling road lined with chain food restaurants.

Verity Square - A plaza full of street vendors leads to Synapse alley.

Halloway Underpass - A tunnel beneath the train station where rain water pools beneath flickering lights. Leads to Holloway Road.
