The tragedy of two twins

I've been thinking about this for a short duration. Not because these two twins are or were conjoined. But for the reason that Clara and Mia weren't born like this, they we're forced together. It dosen’t matter if you think that Itward used his magic or if it was the doctors from Oswald Asylum who experimented on them to make them one. They were perfectly normal twins that were unloved by their parents, abandoned by them, and on top of that, the girls hated each other. They hated each other so badly that they couldn't stand being stuck together, hence why they're so desperate to find somebody who could perform the ritual. So when that individual fails to do so, the sisters are so livid that they kill the ritualist.

Now, what does that have to do with Bo and Vincent? Well, it's in the way that their relationships are formed, as well as their backstory. Whilst both of these twins can be envious, along with bickering with each other from time to time, one clearly cares more about the other, and that dosen’t end with their insanity. For the forced conjoined twins, it has been stated that what makes the girls different is that Mia was angry and Clara was sad, this was because they were both mad. Meanwhile for Bo and Vincent, they are angry and resentful for their circumstances. Vincent turned out to be scarred, but beloved for his skills and behaviour, though Bo came out to be beautiful, his uprising and lack of proper emotional control made him out to be the monster everyone told him he was.

What I believe is even more interesting is the twin's relationships with their mother. Although the House of Wax film shows us how much Bo and Vincent adored Trudy, I do not doubt the idea that a part of them could have despised her for failing them in unalike ways. They are so deep into their insane love for her that it has made them delusional, and that's a clear sign from Bo. Since how he sees it, he was incredibly spoiled, and that's why Trudy was so harsh on him, when in reality, it was way more grim than that.

Clara and Mia own a picture of their mother that has a written phrase 'mother must die.' Implying that the girls harboured intense hatred towards their mum. However, a few more hours into the game, Itward mentions that their parents never loved them, but the twins could never accept it. Meaning that a part of them were also delusional in this fact, or rather ignoring the truth because what was supposed to be granted to them never occurred. And since they didn't have that, that made them more into outcasts, as well as having the idea that they at most had each other.

Vincent and Bo were fine with this predicament. Yes, they could have their shortcomings, yet they shared the same goal. To finish their mothers dream, this was what tied them down to Ambrose in the first place. They never planned to stick around in Ambrose forever. That was at least what Bo made it out to be when he was speaking to his brother in the kitchen. They wanted to finish what their mother had started so that a part of them could lay to rest, to forget the past that chained them to their misery. But of course, just like Clara and Mia, their desires lead them to their doom. To have irony be a section of their fall. Bo and Vincent perishing in their mother's legacy the way they were born, while Clara and Mia died from a ritual that separated their souls but turned their vessel into ashes. Or well, that's how the game makes it seem. The twins' real death is a mystery, but that's beside the point.

Yes, greed and wickedness can take you far, but the consequences of those actions can be extremely fatal and cruel. What's even worse is that these twins never got a chance to comprehend why this happened. It wasn't because God favoured others rather than they had made a mistake, but because it was a path destined to fail either way. Perhaps Bo and Vincent could have died from old age or something else entirely. Still, that dosen’t change the fact that Trudy's dream died when Ambrose did. Trudy's work wouldn't have been recognised in an abandoned town, nor if half of it was done by one of her sons. Not to mention that the corpses would have been discovered one day if it was meant for tourism. At the end of it all, what Bo and Vincent did was for their own gain, not just for their mother.

Clara and Mia couldn't even recognise what they did was horrible. They were so deep into their madness that regret and normalised morality didn't exist for them. They blame others for their own faults. When they can't understand something, they go towards violence. Everything they did was either chatoic or selfish. Their origins are so different every time that you can't puzzle them all together without questioning what was real and what was fake.

This wasn't meant to be much of a deep dive analysis, I had this need to compare these two groups of twins when it comes to tragedy since I noticed that horror media tends to make twins way more alike than they realise. Nonetheless, I hope you enjoyed this post of mine, and if I did fail to mention something that I should have, do comment about it. I'd like to read your thoughts as well.

Summary: Fran Bow, is a ten-year-old girl dealing with the traumas of witnessing the brutal murder of her parents. Her only companion is her black cat, Mr. Midnight, who motivates her to flee the abusive asylum she resides in.

This is for sure one of my top 10 favorite games! It has a special place in my heart since I played and watched it at a very young age. It's extremely dark but also beautiful. Her story is stunningly portrayed in a creepily and mystical way. 1000/10

I keep seeing this sorta stuff around and honestly it’s really interesting to me as someone who’s a big horror nerd in the boring wordy essay kinda way because I think that’s interesting about cosy horror in particular is that sorta clashing of how tf can horror be cosy? But, like, I get it. It works imo.

I personally do like cosy horror when it’s done well - mostly bc I’m in the ball park that horror doesn’t have to be visceral. I think fran bow, The path and dark wood are great examples of what could fall under cosy horror. But honestly I think that’s mostly just as they fall under the dark fairy tales catagory - anything with wretched little girls will always have a soft spot in my heart tbh

I think cosy horror is at a weird spot as a genre bc it feels like a catch all for Dark fairytales, cookie clicker/farm sims with horror undertones & folkhorror but I am kinda intrigued to see if it could actually make itself work as a genre.

I don’t think it’s against horror as a genre to want to enjoy it without feeling petrified. I think that’s why slashers are so popular - it’s the predictability that provides comfort & I feel that cosy horror sorta keeps in line with that.

Anyway have some recs that I sorta feel fall into cosy horror

Alice 1988 - film - surrealist take on alice in wonderland with stop motion taxidermy and some crazy imagery.

Fran bow - 2015 - game - Whimsical dark fairy tale following a little girls escape from a psychiatric facility. The lore from this game is spectacular & I highly recommend Miss Fortune as well by the same team if you like crying

Darkwood- 2014 - game - dark polish fairytale apocalypse, the line where body horror and botany meet, very akin annihilation. The designs in this game are to die for. It’s a resource collect by day, survive the night game but it’s not too costly if you fail.

Haunting of Hill house (Tv series & book, but I’ll be focusing on the book here)

There’s a family, they’re a bit fucked up. There’s a house, it’s a bit fucked up. A classic.

Remember how as a kid you’d find faces and silhouettes in patterns & objects. Or how you’d play that game of the parkour man who could always perfectly keep up with the car as it drove. Yeah this is that turned to 100.

Dredge 2023 game

In my opinion dredge is a fishing game first and anything else second. In terms of horror it’s very light on it - it’s falls more into the lovecraft inspired mystery genre to me but it has its creepy moments. It’s less in your face horror and more the subtle eerie setting. But it’s very cute - you get a little fishing boat and you just pull fucked up stuff out of the sea.

MY OPINION ON;

Character in general: As for the actual character, I think Frisk is a funny case. I don't think I've ever had a favorite UT character, but I always liked how you could just make Frisk your own little thing, y'know? Everyone has always had their own unique take on Frisk as a person, something more than just the character you play as, and that was what made me choose them as my muse back in the day (yeah I did, lore drop). I love kid character and how they're usually morally grey due to being children, it's such a fun thing to explore, and that is basically what Frisk is: your choices determine their alignment.

How they play them: As I already said, every take on Frisk is pretty much unique to the mun that portrays them. And that applies here, because Winter's take on them is very different from how my Frisk used to be. Unapologetically a lovable goofball that is in that fine line between being very memey and being a sweetheart. And they're legit funny too, like I enjoy seeing Frisk interact with all of Winter's other muses because of how well they just bounce off practically anyone while still being a BIT of a menace. Lovable kid!

The Mun: We have not interacted MUCH outside of OOC posts (a running gag for me because I will follow people for months before actually doing anything lol), but Winter's pretty cool. I like reading all of their headcanons and worldbuilding posts because I'm here for all that unapologetic LOVE for our muses. I just love seeing people write a bunch of OOC stuff related to the characters they write and that's what Winter does with their UT muses, especially Frisk and Chara. I also like their unique takes on Chara, btw, I was there back when the character was only ever portrayed as an evil, psychopathic serial killer and the change of pace is nice. Gotta support my fellow underdog-enjoyers!!

Overall Opinion: I could never run a multimuse, I see myself getting close to double digits in drafts and I die, so I admire the people that do. And it's especially cool when they have their own muses interacting with each other, and other people's muses, and creating their own little world. And that's what YOU should expect if you have not checked Winter's blog already! Very active on your Dash, always has something going on with their muses and YOU could be just a mouse press from doing the same. 😎 So yeah, check em' out.

Okay so the reason I went with Frisk, since you suggested it, is because most people that know me these days don't know this… but I used to RP Frisk all the way back in 2015, like during Undertale's very heyday. So Frisk is a character I deeply associate with a time in the RPC in which brand new RP blogs could easily gain a 100 followers in a day; muns hosted IC BGO and CAH sessions on a daily basis; and we were all young and in high school and had all the time in the world to run our blogs.

ANYWAYS, what I'm trying to say here is that I have a soft spot for Frisk beyond the game. Idk, they give me a sense of nostalgia not many muses these days give me. And a lot of your little Dash events take me back to those days as well. We barely know each other but, hey, just wanted to let you know that's another reason I started following you.
