you say you hate your eyes. nothing special, nothing to write home about. why am i writing, then? why can’t i stop dreaming of the way you look at me? a brown so encompassing it could swallow you whole, and i wish it would consume me.

you say you aren’t sure if you like the lip stain you’ve meticulously applied. it’s not the right shade, you don’t think it suits you. i sit and wonder what it would look like staining my cheek, my lips. i stare, hoping you won’t notice the stolen glances.

you say you don’t think you’re strong. that there are people stronger. i wish you could feel the way my heart skips a beat when i see your bare arms and broad shoulders. i can’t help but imagine your embrace, lifting me off the ground. maybe i just watched dirty dancing a few too many times growing up. maybe you could be my patrick swayze?

i say i love your brown eyes, golden like the best sunsets and dark like the bark of a pine tree. i say i love your lipstick, perfectly applied or smudged from the day, in any shade. i say i love your body, towering and warm, with the fortitude of a mythological hero. this is how i say i love you.

Could you ever demonstrate what you’ve done with it?

Time is our first grave

It is the soil that suffocates our flesh

It watches as we decay

You are an entire separate being whose life has been extremely complex and doesn't have to rely on someone's model for permission to exist. You are allowed your own rituals and mistakes and quirks and desires. And possibilities and impossibilities.

Nobody is watching you from afar waiting for you to trip up and make a mistake so that they can call you out and ultimately crucify you for being awful.

in antiquity, Sappho wrote, "slender Aphrodite has overcome me with longing for a girl" on a scroll of warm papyrus that she never expected would be seen by another's eyes. a prose, one can only imagine, written ardently with a carnal desire for one's lover. most fragments we can attribute to Sappho are just that—fragmented. contemporarily, i emulate, "slender Aphrodite has overcome me with longing for a girl" on a dimly lit laptop screen, filled with desire to be seen. a prose, one can only imagine, written ardently with a carnal desire for my lover. i assure you, like Sappho's, the words i share with you will reverberate through time, never to fade away—fragmented or whole.

does the Earth no longer love me because i am not a child?

does the deer no longer stay with me because it does not recognize the innocence that once resided in me, that it represents so dutifully?

does the ocean no longer laugh with me? its waves, once full of familiarity, once whispering the secrets of the creatures in its depths, in a language only i could hear; does it see that i no longer have that once intimate playfulness in my soul?

the ocean's waves touch me, but i do not hear its promise of safety, its assurances of time well spent. the waves circle me and pull away, uncertainly, without the closeness i once felt.

the deer stare, and they turn away -- they no longer see that i won't hurt them, they no longer understand the language my soul speaks. the birds scatter, the rabbit runs, the fox scurries through the gate -- not to be seen again.

the Earth no longer loves me, because i am not a child.
