Brennan Lee Mulligan during the fireside chat for The Wizard, The Witch, and The Wild One - Episode 9
[Image ID:
Screenshots of excerpts from the transcript of the Worlds Beyond Number podcast’s fireside chat on The Wizard, The Witch, and The Wild One - Episode 9.
Brennan Lee Mulligan: And, to me, that describes so many heartbreaking situations, where something deep and true does come, like- the number one belief I have, in terms of like, whatever my secular morality is— is that there's a weird attitude in some parts of our culture, that like, impulses are sinful, and morality is like a structure?
Aabria Iyengar: YES!
Brennan Lee Mulligan: And that bullshit. Moral impulses are incredibly real. Nobody needs to explain what's wrong with-think of the first age you are, where someone's mean to another kid, or an animal, and something in you goes, "Wrong!!" And that's primal.
[…]
Brennan Lee Mulligan: And like it's-it's brutal! It's very Imperial. It's like this oppressive weight, from a very smart opponent, who is convincing themselves. Like, the reason the arguments have that urgency, is that Suvi is also self-indoctrinating, and it's part of that thing that comes back up. And I think the big, sinister part of, of….. The idea of principle. Like, what, in principle, is different from a demon being bound in a circle of salt, and what you saw happening to Naram out under the derrick. This is-I don't have time to explain this in this talk back. I have issues with the philosophic concept of principle, point blank.
[…]
Brennan Lee Mulligan: Yes. And I think that the idea of principle, from-especially to a wizard, who is all about organization, taxonomy, patterns, and systems-principle is this idea that, maybe is built on sand, right?
Aabria lyengar: Yeah.
Brennan Lee Mulligan: When we think about "what are your principles," we use it as a synonym for being a good person. "Are you principled?" But the idea of principle being like, maxims, axioms, "What are some rules that I can ALWAYS follow?" And speaking of them, like, if you go back to Aristotle's Golden Mean, maybe living by principles produces bizarre, immoral edge cases.
[…]
Brennan Lee Mulligan: So it's this idea of, like-but it's unexamined by Suvi in that moment, and the reason it's unexamined, is because I think it's one of the main tools of the indoctrination of the Empire. What have you already accepted? Right? I see this in ethical discourse all the time, which is why whataboutism is so powerful, in modern philosophical discourse, is people go like, "Okay. You've made a moral point. You've made a call to action. You've said, 'we need to do something to make the world better.' So what I'm going to do is find some other moral failing of yours, hold it up in front of you and say, 'but you did this bad thing like this,' or this other situation occurred that was similar to this, where you did not act. So wouldn't you in fact, be a hypocrite by acting or not acting in a similar way this time?'''
Brennan Lee Mulligan: Which sounds, when you see it in the world, like sound moral reasoning, and it's garbage.
Taylor Moore: [Laughs]
Brennan Lee Mulligan: Because it's basically saying, like, "Instead of helping, why don't you be consistent?" And it's like-
[…]
Brennan Lee Mulligan: It's like stupid. What the fuck is the point of consistency? Like principle as a measurement of consistency, and the Fox's whole deal would be like, "Yeah, yesterday I did something bad and today I'm going to do something good because I want to." That's all.
Erika Ishii: Yeah.
Brennan Lee Mulligan: And someone would be like, "You're a hypocrite." And he'd be like, "Okay! I'm gonna get some fish slurry."

My deepest, most sincerely held hope for season 2 is that it turns out Qimir isn't Sith or Jedi, can't stand either one of them, is sick of everybody's nonsense, and he and Osha found the Intergalactic Church of Fuck All Y'all

i will say. I do really get how dream has such a devoted follower base. with his stream and video he presented all the information in a way to make the view sympathetic towards him and make himself seem like the good guy. if someone were to only watch those and do none of their own digging or basic fucking research then I get how they would draw the conclusions they do and form the opinions they hold.
that being said why the fuck would you not do your own research and instead trust the word of the guy literally EVERYONE is against

American tankies and other useful idiots: "USA controls all world politics and is responsible for literally all the evil in the world"
Also American tankies: "Yeah it doesn't matter if we elect a mad fascist dictator with history of rape and selling state secrets or a normal competent person. This will have zero influence on global politics. Stick it to The Man, don't vote! That'll show them!"

on principle i fail to see the point in DNIs cause so often it's the same people that have a DNI interacting with the people their DNI is alluding to lol. but when it comes to singular posts having a DNI i'm like. are you a control freak? why do you care about what the stranger pressing like or reblog on a post you made is into. like how does that influence your online experience whatsoever. also why do you think said stranger is gonna respect the warning you just wrote. why do you think people online are on the same wavelength as you are when it comes to social etiquette. but most of it all, why does it matter

if julian and garak were to have children (and i imagine they do), i think the kid(s) would have the last name "garak". not only does it continue mila's last name, but it destroys richard bashir's oh so precious legacy

Everyone thinks they can write a romance novel. Scratch that. They think they can write a romance novel better than all the other romance novels. Because of course they can. Romance is trite. It’s trashy. It’s simple.
Everyone thinks they can write a romance novel until they actually sit down to write one.
Because the people who disparage the genre are too embarrassed to engage deeply with the ideas that build the work, to make any meaningful commentary on anything, to add to any on-going conversations. They’re hovering above it all, too precious to land. Instead of writing a romance novel, they’re writing a novel that insists they’re beyond all of this, that says romance is beneath them, it’s not worthy of them.
So they end up with a parody of what they think romance is. I.e. they have written a bad romance novel.
I think it’s true that anyone can write romance. Anyone can do any of the cringey, heart-on-your-sleeve art. In fact, the hardest part is beginning.
Step one: You have to love the thing you’re making.

And another thing: Leo and pixelvibes are the same gahtdamn people, bergdorfverse's shit is horrific in CAS, straight trash. Felix, Harrie, Clutter Cat are all either the same personailities of one person or cousins. Anye created an entirely new patreon account (plush pixels) for maxis match stuff. Why not do like other creators and make it all under one account?
Also its forever fuck early access, I don't give a damn how much gas you don't have in your car.

so how long after trump wins do you guys think the voters of the democratic party, realizing the error of their liberal and ineffectual ways immediately due to 1 election, will mobilize an armed resistance to seize control of the united states in order to disband it, undoing the generations of harm caused by the nation ? do you guys think it'll happen before or after the day 1 dictator stuff or ? Just wondering is all because I love the first bit but the timeline is kind of confusing me

The genre you are talking about is very varied. There’s book called Carmilla where female vampire is in love with her female victim and victim is confused with her feelings towards vampire even after she learns who Carmilla really was. There’s Jane Eyre novel where main male character lies and tries to deceive main female character by unlawful marriage that could ruin her and she forgives him and still loves him. There’s a movie Crimson Peak where brother and sister have incestous relationships and kill women who brother marries for their money. He marries main female character and poisons her but he also fell in love with her and tries to make amends. She forgives him and still loves him. A very popular trope in gothic fiction is characters doing some horrible things, like mass murder, deception, debauchery and then their love interests still love them, still want them, still accept them. So Orlok being a mass murdering plague bringer is not such a deal breaker for gothic romance with him according to gothic traditions. It’s very, very gothic genre.
anon, you need to please go and explain this to the juvenile idiots who think that a movie being a “gothic” horror and romance means that there is some fixed pattern which every story of this genre strictly follows allowing only one (1) kind of interpretation. where the supernatural/vampire creature can only represent one thing and that is heroine's sexual freedom and liberation and that it belonging to this genre means no conversation about the existing themes of grooming and sexual abuse between the vampire and the heroine, can be had. and if some people do then that means they just don't understand how the gothic genre works!
it's stupid and proves people's shallow understanding of what a genre means and how it works.
and irdk what made you think orlok killing people was a deal breaker for me lmao. the “deal breaker” here would be the lack of characterisation he has beyond being the incarnation of evil and being fucking hideous. and the little screen time his and ellen's relationship is given in the movie doesn't help either. all we see of their dynamic is him subjecting her to psychic rape every night and her hating it, calling it a “torture”, screaming for help while she is stuck in these spells induced by him. she is terrified of him but also drawn to him and that is what i see, not the love or understanding that Eggers apparently wanted to portray in their dynamic. ellen is also never truly conflicted between thomas and orlok. if that was the intention then it's not well executed on-screen.
