Looking for research participants for a study on fandom attitudes towards generative AI!
Hello Tumblr! My name is Irissa Cisternino, and I'm a PhD candidate recruiting research participants for my doctoral dissertation study on fandom & generative AI!
I'm interested in understanding fans' perspectives on and experiences with generative AI (text and image generation software). That means perceptions both positive and negative! However you feel about genAI, I'm interested in hearing from you.
[EDIT 2/13/24: fixed one small error; if you filled out the survey in the last hour and responded "yes" to being contacted for an interview but there was no option to put your email in, please email the research team directly if you'd like to schedule an interview! This has been corrected now.]
If you're over 18, can speak/understand English, and are interested in participating you can learn more information and take the survey here. I've also made a FAQ post about the study that I've pinned to the top of the blog, and you can see more info on the shareable flyer below:
Tumblr media
Feel free to reach out via dm or email (email address is on the flyer!) with any questions! The study is anonymous and voluntary, and you'll be asked about your fandom background, attitudes towards generative AI, and demographic information. The survey should take about 15-20 minutes, and you can skip over any questions you want. You can also elect to participate in a follow up interview, if you want to. The full details are on the consent form, which you'll be able to read before taking the survey!
Feel free to share this with anyone in your networks (fandom or personal) that you think would be interested in participating! Reblog, spread to other platforms, discord servers, etc. This is also posted to Twitter/X here, and I'm working on sharing it elsewhere. Thanks for your help!

Don't Use GenSlop on your Book Covers!
I am absolutely baffled by the number of AUTHORS willing to use AI art on their book covers. This seems counter-productive. I will not buy a book that uses AI on the cover because it VERY STRONGLY suggests that the writing content is also genSlop.
Like, why shoot yourself in the foot like that, when there are literally SO MANY WAYS to make an amazing book cover without compromising your integrity?
It's not just indie authors I put on the shitlist, either. Paolini is on there for the cover of Fractal Noise. He's arguably the one who opened the door to these creativity leeches, because his book was the first.
And there's so many authors who are proud of "taking down" artists, like we were ever on a pedestal to begin with. Dude. We never made enough to survive. By taking us down, you're taking us from "barely scraping by" to "dead in the gutter." The truth is, extremely successful artists will be fine, because their names carry them through and get them work. People want art in Michael Whelan's style, for example. The people GenSlop will hurt are the artists that didn't even make $15K/year on their artwork.
The most frustrating thing I've seen going around is the whole "LOL artists will need to get a real job now!" and this just reeks of the gutting of arts programs in schools in the 1990s and 2000s. It means that little boys consider "football" a career to aspire to, but not "book cover artist." To me? FOOTBALL is the hobby, and the people who play it professionally get paid WAY too much to do it. To me, art is ten THOUSAND percent more valuable.
But I'm not going to go around hoping NHL players get "taken down a peg." Even if wishing for that is INFINITELY less cruel than hoping artists go hungry because you think they're gatekeeping.
I will not buy your book if the cover is AI. I will not buy your book if you even HINT you're supportive of AI. I will not buy your book if you decide you need to be "devil's advocate" or say something like "the AI debate isn't black and white." It is. AI is bullshit. Use of it is theft. You are a fucking criminal in my eyes if you use gen AI on a book cover, and I will assume your writing is AI-generated, too. Full stop.
There are so many ways to get a quality book cover without breaking the bank or underpaying artists. Those ways existed BEFORE GenAI, and they exist now. You have no excuse for that shit. Knock it off.

hope you have a good day/night!

Please do not repost my work/ideas on other websites!
[̲̅N][̲̅o][̲̅t][̲̅e][̲̅s]
I did what he did after saving you, reaction to you calling him Papa, some reactions from other slayers, and things you two do together! Thank you for being my first request Dear <3 [Gn! Reader]
Genya Shinazugawa
Tumblr media
Once he saved you he decided to take you to a nearby Healing Place for demon slayers [Forgot what they're called lmao]
But he'd have you stay with him in the same room, the doctors bringing Genya some child close and toys
Specifically a little Duckling Plushie for you
Once he and you are all healed, he tried to take you back to the village he thought you were from
But once he got there, and asked around, he figured out that you didn't live there
Or you didn't have any family that lived there
So deciding to take you to the orphanage, Genya began to make his way toward it
But the thing was
Once he got there
He wasn't able to get you off of his leg
Resulting in him just taking you back to the compound, specifically the Butterfly Estate so he could get some help
And on the way back, he had noticed you clinging to him and trying to copy his movements
It warmed his heart so much-
Genya let out a sigh, staring down at your pouting form. "Y/n, I have to go on this mission."
"NO!"
Pinching the bridge of his nose, he muttered something under his breath. Reaching down, he grabbed the back of your shirt and tried to pry you off of his leg.
Keyword tried.
"Y/n I'm going to be late!"
"I. Don't. Care!"
Tears welled up in your eyes as you clung to his leg tighter.
"I want Papa to stay with me!"
It got quiet as you said that, Genya tensing up. Looking up at him cautiously, you saw a bright blush on his face as steam came out of his ears—his eyes swirled as he slumped sideways.
"KYAAAAAA—PAPAS TURNED PINK!!"
Now when Sanemi found out
Oh boy
He was so confused for a second like
"Did I miss something?" "When did you get a girlfriend-" "Was it a one-time thing?" "What the fuck iS HAPPENING-"
After he got his shit together [and Genya explained] he tck-ed and walked away
You just stared confused for a second before asking
"Whos he? He doesn't seem very nice"
Genya just stayed quiet and picked you up, walking away
Rengoku and Mitsuri love you to bits
When they first met you Mitsuri yelled about how cute you are and smuggled you with so much love [poor Genya was shocked]
While Rengoku questioned Genya on some things, making him answer him shyly [sweet baby :( <3]
Spoiling you with food and toys non-stop
Genya has to stop them, but it fails cause his voice is so small and scared :(
He's terrified and confused cause why are the hashira talking to him-
But then Mitsuri told him to come over for dinner and he just
Genya.ex has stopped working
Poor baby is overwhelmed with anxiety and shit
But he goes anyways cause you looked so happy :(
"Thank you again for inviting us over Kanroji-Sama" Genya said quietly, not looking the pillar in the eyes.
"Of course! You and Y/n are welcome anytime!" Mitsuri responded, setting another plate of food on the table.
She had made a whole buffet for dinner, obviously really excited to have you and Genay over. It looked really good.
"Thank you Ms. 'Anroji!" Pronouncing her last name was a bit hard for you. But it always brought a huge smile to her face.
"KYAAA YOU'RE SO CUTEEEE~!!"
Now when Genya has free time, he always hangs out with you
Taking you shopping, to get food, teaching you how to swim, etc.
It doesn't matter where you go or what you two do, he just loves hanging out with you
However, you won't go anywhere with Mr. Fluff, the duck you got when he first saved you
It goes everywhere with you and it is absolutely adorable
It has tea parties with you, where Genya is also attending [where you do his makeup and hair]
Painting sessions with you, where Genya has to wash Mr. Fluff the Duck after [He also hangs up the paintings in the house]
"PAPA!"
Jumping up from the couch, Genya rushed towards your room—gun in hand. Had something happen to you? Why did you yell? Fear was in your voice when you yelled-What happened?
Bursting into your room, finger on tricker he yelled. "What happened?! Are you ok?!"
The room was quiet, the only thing heard was your sniffles.
"Mr. Fluff the Duck got paint on him" You whimpered.
Genya choked on his air, falling to his side comedically.

Do you realize that Glaze and Nightshade don't protect anyone's art against corporations that make millions off stolen art, namely Midjourney and Microsoft? Both Midjourney and DALL-E 3 use entirely different, confidential and closed-source algorithms to steal everyone's art and, obviously, bypass whatever Glaze and Nightshade put into that art.
The only thing Nightshade and Glaze are protecting are corporate profit margins.
There's more than just Midjourney and Dall-e out there, and while those are our main enemies, we don't want to be scraped by any genAI picture spitter. If Nightshade and Glaze don't work against future iterations of algorythms that rely on scraping data from the internet, there will be further research for more tools to combat them. Artists will not give up and try what. we. can. Besides, between an university that conducted research, prepared documents that were then put under peer review, developed and tested a software before releasing it and an anon on tumblr, I will choose to trust the former and keep to spreading news of Nightshade

found some old sketchbooks
[artwork made by any other teenager] "this is great! I love your attention to detail!" [artwork made by my teenage self] "what is this trash toss it and never draw again"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
normally I have to put in a lot more effort to overcome this extremely unreasonable take, but these were drawn so long ago that I actually feel a bit disconnected from the version of me who drew them.
back then I usually drew on loose leaf paper and threw them out when I got tired of them (I still do this), so I didn't think I had any drawings older than a few years until I dug these books out from the back of a cabinet
(using the pencil in lieu of a signature, not that anyone would steal these)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there was a fan artist I followed who could draw in (what seemed to be) every style in the world, so my younger self decided that being able to draw everything in every style in the world was obviously the pinnacle of artistic skill
I stopped caring about developing my own style and went through a phase of just practising other people's styles for a few months
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's all very wonky and the lines are unconfident and there are smudges everywhere and I have a bad habit of drawing on both sides of the paper(I still do this)
but I feel like the young artist who did this was making a genuine attempt at learning how to draw everything
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ok, a mostly-genuine attempt at learning how to draw cute cartoon animals and not much else
there's also an alarming amount of 90s shoujo-style doodles here that I'm not putting online
bonus ponysona
idr her name (Feather-something) but I remember she sculpts clouds to sleep on (she contributes nothing of value to pony society)
I stopped watching mlp after Twilight became a princess so this has to be from before that. was that really 2012? what year is it??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
even though I neglected developing it, there is still a style that I call "my" style - it's the one that I find easiest to draw.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are more recent, maybe 2016-2017? 2017 is recent, right? omg what year is it???
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
maybe it's because of the recent discourse about genAI vs human art that I've become more charitable towards amateur work, including my own. (it helps that while I know I drew these, I don't remember the process of drawing them, so it feels like I'm looking at someone else's work and I don't have the immediate gut reaction to trash it)
it's certainly more effort than what the genAI frauds are doing.
I don't think there's anything wrong with mimicking a style you like - styles can't be copyrighted, so if you have the skill to replicate it then it's fine.
Prompting "in the style of [artist name]"/img2img "to the style of [artist name]" is different because it's a cheating shortcut - you didn't earn that ability. You didn't put in the work. You're nothing like the max skill fan artist who could draw in every style.
New Year is in a few days
I'm going to ditch the perfectionism. My work is fine. My work from 10+ years ago is fine. Everything I do has more soul than the frauds using their plagiarism machines. I want to upload more often again.

The Corinthian
The sun was high above, bringing the heat of the day with it. Kazanath Targiph walked through the city, dressed in long pants and a plain hooded shawl to protect his skin from the light. No one could see who he was and so he was treated as one would treat any commoner, shoved and cursed at by nobles who expected him to take the trouble to get out of their path. He brushed off the insults and finally found his way to the black stone gate of a large mansion.
The mansion belonged to Ozyryn Targiph, the firstborn son of an influential merchant by the name of Ganzil Targiph. Ozyryn was born of a mother with royal blood and according to that stature, he had grown up incredibly spoiled. Such wasn't the case for Kazanath, because while he and Ozyryn shared the same father, Kazanath was a half-breed, born of a Genai servant woman that Ganzil had relations with.
Having only half human blood made a big difference. A half-breed was a freak of nature, a force of incredible power to be contained and used to the utmost limit of its capability. Due to his appearance, people were often distrustful and wary of Kazanath and he had to work twice as hard to make the same progress as his half-brother and yet, his father had never been satisfied.
But the Great Golden Dragon of Sambaat was old now, and his enemies circled his hoard like vultures, waiting to snatch what they could. Of course, Ozyryn would make sure not even a single coin was taken if he had a say in it.
"State your business," the guard at the gate grunted.
"Kazanath Targiph here to see Ozyryn Targiph," Kazanath said, pushing his hood back so the guard could see his face.
And what a face he would see! Kazanath's eyes were such a pale blue that he appeared blind at times and his complexion was ash-blue, while his veins were grey. His skin was taut, all muscle, and no fat, so his high cheekbones and hard jaw looked more like a deathhead mask than a face.
The guard grimaced and looked away. "I'm not sure Ozyryn has time for you today," he said, and Kazanel's eyes rolled in irritation.
"I am here on official business of the bazaar," Kazanath said, shouldering past. "Surely my brother can understand that."
"You are not to enter without permission," the guard said, placing the sharp edge of his sword against Kazanath's neck. "This is not your home."
Kazanath took a deep breath, filling his lungs with air and trying to dispel the violent urges that demanded he twist the guard's neck and chew into his flesh for good measure as punishment for placing a blade to his skin.
"Go on, disturb my brother with the simple message that I want to see him. Shall we bet on who he will whip for insolence?" Kazanath said.
The guard withered and lowered his sword, looking away. "Very well. But do not blame me if his mood is terrible as a result of your intrusion."
Kazanath strode past him without a word, pulling his hood back into place. He was left to enter the mansion undisturbed. Some of the servants bowed to him while others lifted their noses in the air and hurried past. Kazanath paid no attention to either type of acknowledgment. He asked for the whereabouts of his brother, and soon located him in the rooftop garden, lounging on an expanse of soft pillows under the shade of a trellis.
"Brother," Kazanath called, moments before he caught the scent of a woman.
But by then, it was too late for him to turn and walk away. He dug his blunt claws into his palms and tried to negate the sudden bloodrage by biting his tongue.
"Ah, if it isn't my brother Kaz," Ozyrn called out smugly.
He was wearing little more than an open robe and a woman wearing nothing at all straddled his lap, facing Kazanath. Her cheeks were pink from embarrassment or pleasure and her legs were parted obscenely wide, hiding nothing.
For a moment of weakness, Kazanath's eyes were entranced. Her delicate nether lips clung to Ozyryn's cock, glistening with her arousal. Her straight black hair was bedecked with gold jewelry and so were her ears, belly button, and nipples. She had let Ozyryn pierce whatever part of her that he wanted to because she got to keep the gold. She was attracted to his money, the sort of woman who would run from any man that wasn't rich.
"Hilah will let you fuck her too if you can pay her price," Ozyryn said, taking a sip of his wine. "You would like that, wouldn't you Kaz?"
He tipped his glass and let the rest of the wine trickle over the prostitute's supple stomach. She writhed and giggled.
Kazanath took a deep, regretful breath, jerking slightly as her scent burned in his lungs, producing a sense of longing so fierce he was tempted to slit his brother's throat just to have her. He turned to look over the city instead, seeking clean air.
"I come with a report from the Bazaar," he growled.
"And?" Ozyryn gripped the woman's hips, stilling her gyrations. "Tell me you have brought good news for me," he demanded, dark brown eyes glittering.
"The Council has agreed to sell three more stall allotments to you," Kazanath said quietly. "I bargained and secured two more."
He was standing just shy of the shade and the sunshine prickled at his skin, but he let it. Anything to distract him.
"Five stall allotments in total," Ozyryn said in astonishment. "You have outdone yourself! This calls for a celebration. Guards! Bring in that soft dumpling I was planning to have tonight. My brother deserves a reward."
Kazanath turned to glance at his brother, the acid of lust burning in his veins, engorging the veins in his body which lay flat and dead save for woman and blood. He would be ashamed of accepting such a slave gift from his brother, but he did not have the heart to snatch a woman like the barbarian he was already claimed to be. He was not a total monster, as he told himself, but he could not be the one to force a woman to service him.
Ozyryn laughed at his expression and held up his glass for his manservant to refill.
"Good times are coming upon us, my brother," he said.
Kazanath sat down in one of the large chairs across from his brother's bed of pillows, unable to keep his gaze from returning to the woman in his arms. Hilah, her name was.
"We shall throw a feast tonight and I shall accommodate all my friends of note. Even you, Kazanath! You will have women, blood, flesh, whatever you desire tonight!" Ozyryn declared.
The doors were thrown open unceremoniously and not one, but three guards hauled a woman onto the rooftop. She was short and built of hardy farming stock, hardly elegant. But the fire in her eyes and the way she tossed her head like an angry mare had Kazanath's vision sharpening in interest. The filmy gown she had been forced to wear did nothing to hide her soft stomach and voluptuous thighs. Her nipples were as brown as peach stones capping the soft swells of her breasts.
The most curious thing about her was her eyes; they were a vivid crimson, his favorite color.
"What is this?" Kazanath asked.
"She's a Witchborn," Ozyryn said. "Bastard blood, but she has no power."
"I have power, I simply do not display it!" The woman retorted, and her voice was smoky and deep.
Fascinating.
One of the guards raised his hand to smack her for the insolence of speaking back, but Ozyryn raised a hand.
"Leave her," he said. "If anyone is to mark her, it should be my dearest brother."
Kazanath stood up and lumbered over to the woman, who huffed defiantly as she looked him over like he was for her, and not the other way around. Her eyes held no fear, only a hint of uncertainty. When he was close enough, she could catch a glimpse inside the hood at his ashen jaw and the thick grey veins that ran down his neck.
"What..." She mumbled. "What are you?"
"He is a halfbreed of sorts, just like you my dear," Ozyryn drawled. "His kind is incredibly potent in bed, so I've heard. Why don't you two put on a show for us?"
"In your dreams!" The woman spat, shaking out her wild curls. "You'd be mad to think I would fuck anyone for your entertainment, golden lizard."
"I'm afraid you don't have a choice, my dear," Hilah called out in a saccharine tone. "Don't forget your place as a slave."
"What's your name?" Kazanath broke in.
"Aliss," the woman replied, sparing him a glance.
Kazanath leaned down. Aliss made a move to step away but the guards held her arms and kept her there. Her heart was beating wildly in her chest, Kazanath could hear it. And yet, he did not smell any fear. Hilah's damned spice taunting him faded into the background as he sniffed at the pulse on her neck, gritting his teeth to curb his instinct to bite.
"You haven't been with many people," he murmured. "If any at all."
"I don't sleep with just anyone," Aliss said sharply.
"Kazanath Targiph is not just anyone," Ozyryn called out. "Remember that, woman. If you don't please him I will cut your head off and feed you to my hunting dogs."
Kazanath could almost hear the gears turning in her head as she calculated how much she was willing to do to spare her life.
"Fine!" She snapped, jerking her arms. "I'll do it."
The guards, at Oryzyn's gesture, let her go. She took a moment to shake her arms out, glaring at Kazanath. Then with a cry, she bolted to the edge of the roof and jumped off. Kazanath was full of dismay as he strode over and peered over the edge. Brilliant red wings burst from her back, shearing through the woman's dress and for a moment, she was flying. Hardly five seconds later, she tipped sideways and went plummeting. Five stories would not be good, not even to one such as her.
Kazanath stiffened, bracing himself for the impact. In the last couple of feet, she managed to right herself and glide for long enough to change the outcome of her descent to a violent scrape-and-tumble instead of a splat. She ended up on her back, dusty red wings splayed out like blood beneath her. Passerbys were already gathered in a tight circle, gaping at the woman that had fallen from the sky.
"You bloody bastard!" She snarled upwards shrilly. "How dare you clip my wings!"
"Bring her back in," Ozyryn said to his guards, who ran to do his bidding. "Do you wish for a more obedient slave, Kazanath? I can have her exchanged."
"No," Kazanath replied.
His face remained placid, but his lips twitched and his tongue flickered against his teeth. This woman interested him, and her presence alone  made him feel more awake than he had felt in a long time.

Chappelle was most recently seen attending an early screening of Will Smith’s upcoming AppleTV+ film, Emancipation, alongside Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, Tyler Perry, Kenya Barris and more. But he’s undoubtedly been a staple in the news cycle this year alone after he was attacked at the Hollywood Bowl during the Netflix Is a Joke festival earlier this spring. The assault came during a time when the comedian was still facing backlash from his 2021 Netflix special, The Closer.

Months later, Chappelle dropped yet another special, titled What’s In A Name?, which boasted footage from a speech he gave during the renaming ceremony at his alma mater, Duke Ellington School of Arts in Washington D.C. and his response to the backlash he received from current students at the school over The Closer. Following that he’d mostly been under the radar, bouncing from city to city with Chris Rock for their joint comedy tour.

AI and Data Privacy: How Lerna AI Offers Best of Both Worlds - Technology Org
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/ai-and-data-privacy-how-lerna-ai-offers-best-of-both-worlds-technology-org/
AI and Data Privacy: How Lerna AI Offers Best of Both Worlds - Technology Org
The breakneck speed with which Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming our world has been nothing short of exciting. A report by KPMG Global Tech highlights AI and machine learning as the most crucial technologies for achieving short-term goals for tech leaders today.
Cybersecurity, data privacy – artistic interpretation. Image credit: Artem Bryzgalov via Unsplash, free license
However, similar to any emerging technology, inherent risks exist. One survey, encompassing over 17,000 individuals, found 61% of respondents expressed apprehension about trusting AI systems, with only half convinced that the benefits outweigh the potential risks. A major concern revolves around personal data privacy.
AI systems are data-hungry beasts. To learn and function effectively, they require massive datasets to train their algorithms and fuel performance. This data often includes personal information like names, addresses, financial details, and even sensitive data like medical records and social security numbers. The collection, processing, and storage of such data raise significant questions regarding its usage and vulnerability.
The Road to Data Privacy
The widespread and unregulated use of AI poses a significant threat to human rights and personal privacy. For example, generative AI (GenAI) uses powerful foundation models trained on massive volumes of unlabeled data— which may or may not take personal data privacy into account.
That’s one of the reasons why AI leaders have issued open letters advocating for a temporary pause in GenAI development. They urge policymakers to establish “guardrails” to ensure their responsible use in the future. In response, there have been increased government efforts to ensure that AI is not being used indiscriminately. For example, the EU’s GDPR (passed in 2018) and the AI Act are two separate legislations aiming to regulate how AI is being used to gather data within the European Union.
The reach of AI governance extends beyond developers and AI pioneers. Companies that integrate AI products and services into their operations hold significant responsibilities. These companies must prioritize ethical considerations when selecting and using AI tools.  For instance, ensuring AI doesn’t perpetuate biases present in training data is critical.  Additionally, companies must comply with relevant regulations, such as the EU AI Act if they operate within the European market.
As we navigate the complex intercourse between AI innovation and personal data privacy, it is incumbent upon all stakeholders— business leaders, policymakers, technologists, and consumers— to engage in a constructive dialogue aimed at forging a path forward that maximizes the benefits of AI while mitigating its potential risks. It is right at this intersection that companies like Lerna AI shine brightest.
Data Privacy the Lerna Way
In a post-cookies world where third-party data is dwindling, the imperative for businesses to leverage their first-party data potential has never been more critical. Lerna AI, a game-changer in mobile hyper-personalization recommender systems, offers a compelling solution to this pressing challenge. The innovative mobile SDK empowers apps to personalize content for each user, leveraging a combination of content metadata and on-device user data, including demographic and sensor data.
By training models on this rich trove of first-party data, Lerna AI enables apps to predict optimal content recommendations tailored to each user’s preferences and interests while preserving user privacy. In an era marked by heightened concerns over data privacy and security, Lerna AI’s approach is cold water over parched throats, ensuring businesses can reach their objectives without having to go outside the box of ethics.  As Lerna AI´s CTO, Georgios Kellaris, highlights, “thanks to advances in privacy-preserving technologies like federating learning and differential privacy, training AI models on sensitive data is now possible, allowing us to learn from richer than before data, while protecting user privacy.”
The model is also highly functional; in tests, the AI dusted double click-through rates and all of these happened without any infringement on user data or rights. The tailored approach that Lerna AI brings to the process helps users to stay longer on the app. Personal recommendation aligns with what the average mobile device wants. More than 56% of customers want personalized recommendations and user experiences with 62% of business leaders citing improved customer as a benefit of personalization efforts, according to a report by Segment.
Moving ahead, the convergence of AI and privacy will continue to shape the digital landscape, challenging conventional norms and necessitating adaptive regulatory frameworks. By fostering a culture of responsible AI development and promoting transparency, accountability, and user-centric design principles, we all can harness the transformative potential of AI while upholding the fundamental principles of privacy and individual rights.

Midrange Phones are About to get Better with Qualcomm's Newest Chipset
Tumblr media
As far as midrange Android phones go, we've come a long way from the days of phones with so-and-so performance, and it's safe to say that a lot of modern midrange smartphones now come with a lot of improvements, making them viable alternatives to more expensive flagships. With that in mind, it seems that Qualcomm has its sights set on the midrange handset market, following the launch of its latest mobile chipset. Not too long after it unveiled the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC, Qualcomm has just announced the arrival of the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, a new mobile chip aimed at upper midrange smartphones. The new SoC slots just below the 8s Gen 3, offering both end users and manufacturers a slightly more affordable option without compromising on the overall performance. Commenting on the launch, Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Handsets over at Qualcomm states: "Today, we embark on the latest expansion in the 7-series to create new levels of entertainment for consumers - integrating next-generation technologies for richer experiences... Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is packed with support for incredible on-device generative AI features and provides incredible performance and power efficiency, while bringing Wi-Fi 7 to the Snapdragon 7 Series for the first time." As far as performance is concerned, Qualcomm says that the 7+ Gen 3 is able to run with a significant 15% increase in performance, in addition to a 45% increase in GPU performance. Simply put, your phone will have less trouble running intensive apps, as well as graphically-intensive games, allowing for better versatility. Of course we'd be disappointed if the newer chip didn't offer any significant upgrades, but the claims with the 7+ Gen 3 are certainly promising. Another key area of improvement is with power efficiency, with a 5% boost according to Qualcomm. Another area that Qualcomm has prioritized with its new chipset is with its AI capabilities - given that generative AI has become quite a major part of the modern smartphone industry with companies such as Qualcomm and MediaTek pioneering the field, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 has been designed to keep up with most AI-integrated software features. This includes support for on-device GenAI, as well as compatibility with large language models including Baichuan-7B, Llama 2, Gemini Nano and Zhipu ChatGLM. Another upgrade that the 7+ Gen 3 comes with is with regards to photographic performance, which is made possible thanks to a built-in 18-bit cognitive ISP, which ideally should be able to provide users with better-looking photos. The chip also features Snapdragons Low Light Vision technology for better image capture in dark scenarios and environments. Other features include Wifi 7 support with HBS (High Band Simultaneous) Multi-Link, and Release 17 5G. As for availability, we can expect to see the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 in devices from companies including OnePlus, realme, and SHARP, to name a few. No specific handset models or dates were given, although it shouldn't be too long before we see the 7+ Gen 3 in action this year. Read the full article

'Ripley is a new limited series that’s coming to Netflix. What’s it about?
Just recently, I referenced The Talented Mr. Ripley – but really I mention it all the time as it’s absolutely brilliant...
…I caught a movie called The Talented Mr. Ripley in the theater. I had no background on the (also excellent) novel by Patricia Highsmith at the time, and so I was completely taken with the dark and stylish tale of a young, troubled con artist named Tom Ripley (Matt Damon, in one of his best ever performances) and his obsession with a spoiled, debonair young man named Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law). Gwyneth Paltrow, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Law are also incredible in it.
The Talented Mr. Ripley takes place in late 1950s Italy – 1958, in fact, one year before the release of Mingus Ah Um – and the film just looks spectacular, like it’s been generated in a genAI/ChatGPT/Holodeck thing for “make late 1950s Italy look like absolute heaven” engineering prompt.
And then, the music! There’s a tactile feel to the vinyl records that appear in the film, as the names of jazz giants are thrown around and also appear on album covers: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis.
So therefore, I was all kinds of interested to learn that that there will be a new version of this story coming to Netflix, told by way of a limited series called Ripley. It stars Andrew Scott (the “hot priest” of Fleabag fame) as the titular Tom Ripley, Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, and Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood.
To say the least, Ripley has a very high bar to pass to surpass the greatness of the film. Beyond what I mention above, the movie version boasts some of the best performances that Damon, Paltrow, Law, and Hoffman have ever given.
The Ripley trailer looks visually interesting, but it seems to lack the cool stylishness of the film, directed by Anthony Minghella. And while there’s no doubt that Andrew Scott is a great actor, I find the glimpses we get of him in the trailer to be somewhat concerning. He comes off more like an enigmatic serial killing weirdo and much less like the charming yet confused, vulnerable yet dangerous masterclass that Matt Damon puts on.
Now, that being said, I’m going to watch the hell out of every episode of this thing, and I’m hoping that I’ll be happily surprised on route.
A few other interesting tidbits:
* The IMDB page for Ripley says that this version of the story takes place in the 1960s, versus the ’50s-set film. Not sure why they updated the setting slightly, and then also obviously made a bold choice to film it in black-and-white (perhaps to clearly differentiate it from the breathtaking and splashy color of 1950s Italy we get from The Talented Mr. Ripley). * Johnny Flynn, who plays Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law’s role in the film), is absolutely spectacular in a romcom TV show called Lovesick (in fact it’s #38 on Pop Thruster’s Best 100 TV Shows Ever). We barely see Flynn in the trailer, so I’m super curious and yet somewhat concerned about the casting here as well.
Ripley: when and where can I watch it?
Ripley will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, April 4th, 2024. The limited series comprises eight episodes.'

Can you explain why its better to use nightshade then glaze? The developers say they are working on a combination of the two, I trust they will choose the most effective option but Im just curious how it works that way/why its better
i'm not sure if i can explain exactly why it works but. Jon Lam(artist an one of the biggest names in our fight against genAI) posted about it when Nightshade first came out. they said it's the best combo to use Nightshade then Glaze. they know what they're talkin about. follow em on twitter for updates (@ jonlamart)
i will do my best to look into the specifics though an i'll post it if i find anythin so,watch this space?
i definitely look forward to a version that combines the two! an i will be endorsing the heck out of it when it comes out too haha.

i wish generative ai - namely ai "art" - stayed as some stupid techbro thing no-one cared about then faded into obscurity like nfts instead of having big corporations actually taking away artist jobs and replacing it with genai slop

How Nimble Models Make AI Accessible to All
Tumblr media
Efficiency with Nimble Models
A continuous progression over a period of many years makes it feasible for generative artificial intelligence to become a prominent topic of discussion. In spite of the fact that a great number of enormous models with billions or even trillions of parameters were constructed, the reverse is true for smaller models with fewer than twenty billion parameters that might be just as accurate. Small and Nimble model: The Fast Path to GenAI was the title of a webinar that he organized in order to dissect this trend. Gadi Singer, Vice President of Intel Labs and Director of Emergent AI Research Lab, and Moshe Berchansky, Senior AI Researcher at Emergent AI Research Labs, Intel, were also present on the webinar.
These are the highlights of the webcast that he presents in this blog, and he encourages you to view the whole webcast so that you may have a better understanding of the content of the debate. Be sure to watch the really fascinating multi-modal generative AI demo that was created using a Llama 2 7B model. The video included the inclusion of the book Forest Gump as extra local material by means of Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). Additionally, the show demonstrated how the model generated text from photos in addition to text from the book.
The Predicament Facing developers
There are a lot of options available to developers when it comes to generative artificial intelligence. A limited number of huge models are useful for broad and multi-purpose applications, whereas a large number of tiny models are useful for enhancing efficiency, accuracy, security, and traceability. The following considerations are necessary for constructing and designing generative artificial intelligence models:
Giant vs tiny, Nimble models (smaller by ten to one hundred times)
Open source models vs proprietary models
Generation that is retrieval-centric as opposed to retrieval-augmented
Types of models: general-purpose vs specialized and customized
The inference between cloud-based and local (on-premises, edge, or client)
As opposed to being tiny and Nimble model, giants were brawny
At this point in time, “small and Nimble model” refers to approximately anything that has less than 20 billion characteristics. The size criterion is a changing objective that may double in 2024; nonetheless, it provides a snapshot comparison versus 175 billion parameters for the ChatGPT 3.5 or more than a trillion for other systems. Scaling smaller models across an organization is more cost-effective than scaling larger ones because smaller models are simpler to change continually and run more quickly than larger ones.
It is worth noting that Dolly, Stable Diffusion, StarCoder, DALL·E, and Phi are all very effective models that operate at this scale. A recent demonstration of the remarkable gains that so-called “small language models” have made on benchmarks in terms of common sense, language comprehension, and logical reasoning was made by Microsoft Research’s Phi 2, which has 2.7 billion parameters. Such findings provide support for the idea that smaller models should play substantial roles, especially in mixed implementations alongside bigger ones.
Alternatives to open source software
In their article, Gadi and Moshe highlight the significance of open source in the development of GenAI models that are both compact and Nimble model. It was in February of 2023 when Meta launched LLaMA, which had models with 7 and 13 billion parameters respectively. It had a great deal of power, and it was first released as open-source software. In a short period of time, a series of animal-named models emerged, beginning with Alpaca, which was constructed on LLaMA by Stanford University, followed by Vicuna, which was developed by UC Berkeley, and then Falcon, Orca, and LLaMA 2 were all developed.
In comparison to what a single firm might do on its own, the quick, ongoing, and open growth of GenAI is far more impressive. Smaller models have caught up to several discrete benchmarks, despite the fact that GPT continues to be more powerful at a broad range of jobs.
In contrast to retrieval-centricity, retrieval-augmented
Data that has been trained using the model is essential for retrieval-centric models. Every single one of the initial versions of GPT-3 was dependent on the data that was stored inside the parametric memory of the GenAI model. This method is unable to take into account critical newer information, which might put the results of corporate operations at risk since it relies on information that is out of date.
This deficiency was addressed by the development of retrieval-augmented generation, often known as RAG. As a means of providing the model with more context, a retrieval front end makes use of numerous vector stores since it makes it possible to retrieve indexed and recent data. Because of this, the data that is entered is more verifiable and up to date, which results in findings that are more credible and also makes solutions more value.
General-purpose as opposed to specific and individualized
According to the conversations that are taking place with business clients about GenAI, they have seen an increase in the demand for specialized models that are adapted for particular functionality as opposed to the general wishes for a general-purpose, all-in-one model. Regarding the supply chain, for instance, a big healthcare provider posed the question, “Why would they want the same model to deal with their patient files as they do with their supply chain?” This is a valid concern, and the fine-tuning techniques that are already available and may be applied to more compact open-source models are an effective option.
The cloud against the local
When discussing the development of AI models, it is impossible to have a thorough discussion without taking into account the concerns around data security and privacy. Every business is required to give careful attention to these factors before sending data to a location where it is exposed to third parties outside the control of the company’s ownership. Keeping data local is made simpler by smaller models, regardless of whether they are operated on personal computers, private clouds, or any other platform.
Leveraging the tiny and Nimble model inflection point as a foundation
Currently, researchers at Intel Labs are working on a variety of enhancements for general artificial intelligence (GenAI) in the near future. These enhancements include efficient LLMs and the technologies that are required to support them.

Looking Ahead for Stellar Cyber
Tumblr media
As many of us take stock of our personal goals, achievements, and aspirations this time of year, I like to look at our company similarly, reviewing our goals, achievements, and aspirations for the future.
Going into 2023, we had four clear objectives:
Deliver an exceptional customer experience from day one.
Strive for continuous product innovation.
Expand our “routes-to-market” worldwide..
Champion the value and power of Open XDR.
Now that 2023 is in the rearview, I am happy to report that we remained focused on these objectives, with the results speaking for themselves.
First, our relentless pursuit of customer excellence directly led to doubling our top 250 MSSP customer base, now up to nearly 50, and being rated a top 3 vendor in the most recent MSSP Alert survey. Our drive for continuous innovation can be seen in our product development (which I will discuss later) and several critical strategic partnerships we entered in 2023 with Oracle, Blackberry, Hitachi, and SentinelOne, to name a few.
From a route-to-market perspective, we added new vital partners in Malaysia (PROVINTELL), the Philippines (NEXTGEN Group, NTT Data Solutions), and Thailand (Vintcom). On top of these partner additions, we introduced two new programs: InterSTELLAR for our partners, aimed at increasing access to materials, expertise, and sales support from Stellar Cyber, and our University Program, giving educational institutions that not only train tomorrow’s security leaders but provide not-for-profit security services for underserved communities access to our platform.
Our continued focus on educating cybersecurity professionals on the power and value of Open XDR led to a few notable milestones for Stellar Cyber. First, Gartner included Stellar Cyber in their 2023 Market Guide for XDR as a representative vendor, listed among some of the most prominent cybersecurity vendors in the world. Additionally, our company was recognized by Gartner in several other reports (Hype Cycle for XDR solutions for midsized companies, NDR Voice of Customer, SecOps Vendor Hype Cycle) in large part due to our efforts to educate buyers on the importance of Open XDR.
Finally, from a product innovation perspective, we launched our first GenAI feature in December, making it easy for users to get answers from our platform using Stellar Cyber Chat. We are only scratching the surface with GenAI, so more is to come in this area.
Bottom line, 2023 was a banner year for Stellar Cyber, where we were able to help security teams significantly improve their ability to detect and respond to threats faster, improving their effectiveness while at the same time reducing the cost and complexity of securing their environments.
2024 and Beyond
2024 will be a big year for Stellar Cyber in more ways than one. From a commercial perspective, we will continue to look for new and innovative ways to deliver our Open XDR platform to MSSPs and Enterprise customers, ensuring we deliver value from day one. From a product perspective, we will be leveling up everything about our platform, from how you integrate data sources and the way our AI/ML detects and correlates threats to how response automation works in the platform. Keep an eye out for blogs on these critical updates to our platform as the year progresses.
We wish all our current and future partners and customers a prosperous, safe, and exciting year.
