Hello everyone!! In a desperate attempt to regain joy in my life, I have decided to create a side blog specific to my interest in literature. To start off this New Year and new blog, I have created a

Terry Brooks

Dopo averlo nominato nel post dedicato al Festivaletteratura di Mantova, tra gli ospiti storici più famosi, oggi ho finalmente deciso di parlarvi più approfonditamente di uno degli autori che ho più amato in gioventù, Terry Brooks, padre del Ciclo di Shannara, una delle saghe fantasy più vendute e ripubblicate al mondo.

Iniziamo col dire che, secondo me, se avete amato Il Signore degli anelli, e apprezzate i fantasy di stampo piuttosto classico, dove degli eroi improbabili, che partono come donne o uomini comuni, poi si ritrovano sulle spalle una missione per savare il loro mondo, stile Frodo, allora la saga di Shannara fa decisamente per voi.

Lo stile con cui è scritta è naturalmente molto più semplice di quello di Tolkien, le varie storie più scorrevoli, ma comunque molto ricche di dettagli e di molti personaggi. E al centro della trama c’è sempre la dicotomia Bene contro Un Male che torna sempre, sotto varie forme, e va sempre sconfitto da nuovi eroi.

Se invece amate i fantasy contemporanei, che virano spesso verso il genere YA e hanno trame più semplici e scarne e anche molto diverse dal classico, allora non so se Terry Brooks fa per voi, ma giudicate voi dopo aver letto la mia presentazione.

Il cuore del ciclo di Shannara, i libri da cui tutto è iniziato, formano la trilogia originale di questa saga e sono:

1- La Spada di Shannara

Trama: Il villaggio di valle d'Ombra è sempre vissuto in pace, ma ora anche su di esso grava una terribile minaccia. Il Signore degli Inganni, che molti ritenevano morto da secoli, è di nuovo all'opera. Solo un meraviglioso talismano, la spada di Shannara, può riuscire a sconfiggerlo per sempre, ma la mitica arma può essere ritrovata ed impugnata solo da un discendente di antichi re. È forse questo il destino del giovane trovatello Shea? Sarà l’ultimo druido Allanon a reclutarlo per cercare di proteggere il mondo dal ritorno del druido Brona, noto anche come Il Signore degli Inganni.

2- Le Pietre Magiche di Shannara

Trama: Ad Arborlon, la mitica capitale del regno degli Elfi, la popolazione sta per essere investita da uno spaventoso cataclisma. L'Eterea, la pianta magica che protegge tutto l'antico popolo dalle forze del male, sta soccombendo sotto un magico attacco. Da ogni parte stanno per irrompere mostri delle tenebre e demoni spaventosi. Solo il giovane Lauren, alla testa di un pugno di eroi, troverà il coraggio di opporsi alle forze del male.

3- La Canzone di Shannara

Trama: I popoli delle Quattro Terre sono ancora una volta in pericolo. Su di loro incombono le oscure e terribili maledizioni tramandate dall’Ildatch, il libro della magia nera. C’è solo una speranza: la “magia fatta di parole” custodita da Brin Ohmsford, la figlia di Wil. Il Druido Allanon, protettore delle Razze, ha bisogno del suo aiuto per ingaggiare questo nuovo combattimento contro il Male. E contro un’antica profezia di sventura che promette per Brin un destino ben peggiore della morte…

Di questa trilogia io in particolare vi consiglio il terzo libro, la Canzone di Shannara, quello che personalmente mi è piaciuto di più, di cui ho amato di più i personaggi. Poichè ho trovato invece la Spada di Shannara fin troppo classica come trama e ho trovato antipatico Will il protagonista del secondo libro.

Dalla trame credo abbiate già afferrato le somiglianze tra alcuni punti delle trame di Terry Brooks e Il Signore degli anelli, ad esempio, la figura del druido che guida l’eroe verso il suo destino, non può non ricordare Gandalf il mago...

Ma è certamente col la quadrilogia seguito del CIclo principale che le somiglianze aumentano ancora.

La quadrilogia seguito del ciclo principale di Shannara si intitola Il ciclo degli eredi di Shannara ed è direttamente collegata ad esso anche se è ambientata tre secoli dopo la fine delle avventure di Brin e Jair.

Nel corso del tempo la Federazione minaccia di conquistare il mondo, ma in pochi sanno che alle sue spalle si cela la tenebrosa magia degli Ombrati, responsabili fra l’altro anche della scomparsa degli elfi. Qui conosciamo i discendenti di Shea Ohmsford: Par e Coll Ohmsford, Walker Boh e Wren Ohmsford. L’ombra di Allanon affida a ciascuno un compito: Par e Coll dovranno cercare la Spada di Shannara e tentare di scoprire la verità sugli Ombrati, Walker Boh dovrà ritrovare la perduta Paranor e riportare in vita l’ordine dei druidi, mentre Wren si dovrà mettere alla ricerca degli elfi scomparsi.

Come potete vedere quindi abbiamo una compagnia di novelli eroi con delle missioni singole, che in teoria poi dovranno poi riunirsi per combattere un unico potente nemico. Vi ricorda forse un’altra Compagnia?Questa quadrilogia la consiglio in toto, non solo mi è piaciuta tutta, ma è anche impossibile non leggere tutti i libri che la foramno, poichè sono tutti collegati, avvengono temporalmente in contemporanea e insieme formano un’unica grande trama.

La quadrilogia è formata dai libri:

1- Gli Eredi di Shannara

Trama: A trecento anni dalla morte di Allanon, il leggendario Druido protettore delle razze, le Quattro Terre sono teatro di tristi cambiamenti: gli Elfi sono scomparsi e i Nani ridotti in schiavitù, mentre le Terre del Sud sono cadute sotto il malvagio governo della Federazione, che ha rigorosamente bandito ogni forma di magia. Ma Par Ohmsford, discendente del mitico Shannara, ha conservato il potere della Canzone Magica, capace di trasformare la realtà; con il fratello Coll, continua a ridare vita alle antiche leggende, e, compiendo imprese impossibili, va alla ricerca della spada di Shannara.

2- Il Druido di Shannara

Trama: Per i quattro eredi di Shannara, riunitisi per liberare le quattro terre dal dominio degli Ombrati, non sono poche le prove che lo spettro del mitico Allanon impone loro di superare. E' infatti necessario restituire ai druidi la scomparsa roccaforte di Paranor, ma occorre anche ritrovare la magica Pietra Nera degli Elfi, attualmente in possesso di una creatura antichissima che sta lentamente pietrificando il mondo.

3- La Regina degli Elfi di Shannara

Trama: Tutte le terre e tutti i popoli sono destinati a perire, gli unici che possono impedirlo sono gli appartenenti al popolo degli Elfi, cos�� recita una profezia. Nessuno però ha più visto un elfo da almeno un secolo e molti dubitano che siano mai esistiti. Solo una vecchia cieca sembra saperne ancora qualcosa, un antico segreto che viene rivelato solo alla bella Wren. Wren scopre così che qualcosa la lega indissolubilmente al mondo degli Elfi e, con pochi compagni, parte all'avventurosa ricerca di quell'antico popolo.

4- I Talismani di Shannara

Trama: tutti gli eredi del mitico Shannara hanno ormai superato le loro prove: la fortezza di Paranor è risorta, Walker Boh è diventato un druido, Wren è stata scelta come regina dagli Elfi e l’ardito Par ha ritrovato la leggendaria spada di Shannara. Il male continua però a minacciare le Quattro Terre, i malefici Ombrati spandono le loro venefiche esalazioni su città e campagne e il loro capo, Rimmer Dall, è pronto ad affrontare la sfida decisiva contro i nemici affidandosi alle sue armi migliori, l’astuzia e il tradimento. Solo il coraggio di un pugno di eroi e il potere di alcuni magici talismani può salvare le Quattro terre.

Terry Brooks oltre queste due serie principali, ha poi espanso il mondo di Shannara con una serie di prequel e sequel a questi libri.

I Sequel di Shannara

- Il viaggio della Jerle Shannara, trilogia con protagonista ancora Walker Boh, già conosciuto nella saga degli Eredi di Shannara, e composta dai libri: La Strega di Ilse, Il Labirinto e L’Ultima Magia;

- Il Druido Supremo di Shannara trilogia ambientata cronologicamente dopo Il viaggio della Jerle Shannara, con protagonista ancora un membro della famiglia Ohmsford e formata dai libri: Jarka Ruus,Tanequil e La Regina degli Straken;

- Gli Oscuri Segreti di Shannara, trilogia direttamente collegata alla precedente (Il druido supremo) con cui condivide dei personaggi e composta dai libri: I Guardiani di Faerie, Il Fuoco di Sangue e Lo Spettro della Strega;

- I Difensori di Shannara, trilogia con protagonista stavolta un discendente della famiglia Leah, famiglia da sempre amica della famiglia Ohmsford e composta dai libri: La Lama del Druido Supremo, Il Figlio dell’Oscurità e La Figlia dello Stregone.

I Prequel di Shannara

- Il ciclo del Demone (Saga del Verbo e del Vuoto), questa in realtà era nata come serie a sè stante che poi Terry Brooks ha collegato con quella di Shannara, ed è composta dai libri: Il Demone, Il Cavaliere del Verbo, Il Fuoco degli Angeli;

- Il ciclo de La genesi di Shannara, Prequel vero e proprio del ciclo di Shannara, qui vediamo come un mondo simile al nostro sia stato distrutto e abbia iniziato a diventare ciò che poi sarà il mondo di Shannara, ed è formato dai libri: I Figli di Armageddon, Gli Elfi di Cintra e L’Esercito dei Demoni;

- Il ciclo Le leggende di Shannara, duologia che continua a raccontare l’evoluzione del mondo di Shannara, ed è formato dai libri: L’Ultimo Cavaliere e Il Potere della Magia;

- II volume singolo Il Primo Re di Shannara, che presenta finalmente uno degli eroi antichi citati nel ciclo principale come antenato di Shea Ohmsford.

Quindi se vi innamorerete del mondo di Shannara sappiate che esistono molti altri libri da esplorare. Ora alcune precisazioni in merito a questa serie:

- proprio come ne IL Signore degli anelli, anche in Shannara l’amore romantico è poco rappresentato nelle trame dei suoi libri, c’è, viene nominato, magari ha anche un ruolo di rilievo ad un certo punto, ma è poco presente.

-non guardate il telefilm tratto dal secondo libro del ciclo principale di Shannara non rappresenta per niente questa serie.

Detto questo comunque Terry Brooks ha scritto anche altre serie oltre a Shannara, tra cui la più famosa è certamente il Ciclo di Landover, formato da 5 libri + 1 che però è un sequel molto recente e piuttosto staccato dal resto della serie:

Trama: Un vero regno magico, con tanto di fate e maghi, in vendita a prezzo di liquidazione. All’avvocato Ben Holiday sembra un'occasione da non perdere ma, una volta effettuato l'acquisto, il povero Ben scoprirà fin troppo presto che sarebbe stato meglio pensarci due volte. Il regno è in rovina, i baroni sono in rivolta ed un terribile drago distrugge ogni cosa. Cosa potrà fare l'improvvisato eroe?                    

Questa serie è molto diversa da quella di Shannara, nasce come una presa in giro dei temi fantasy classici e dei personaggi fantasy classici, quindi va letta con un certo stato d’animo. Se prendete troppo sul serio il fantasy non fa per voi, e se non conoscete molto il genere fantasy allo stesso modo forse non fa per voi perchè non cogierete in pieno tutti i rimandi dell’autore ai classici fantasy anni 80′. compresi i suoi.

Se però un’infarinatura fantasy l’avete e siete in vena di trame assurde senza capo ne coda, potrebbe fare per voi.

This is chronologically the fourth book in the Shannara Series. But it is the first book in the  Genesis of Shannara trilogy. And when I looked up the order the author, Brooks, suggested to read the series in, it came in as the 18th book to read. So, make of that whatever you will.

Shannara is... *wiggles fingers* ...you know? It's a good story, but somehow it feels like you read and read and the book never ends? It's an experience. I read the... Voyage of the Jerle Shannara (? The one with flying ships) trilogy twice. I kinda dropped the first book of another trilogy (genesis of shannara? one of the books has "gipsy morph" in the title) halfway through for some mysterious reason. But yeah. An experience. You probably should read it.
