Can we just pour one out for Geork/George and Catherine? At least Rades, Sally and Valtos knew why they were dying and that it wasn't their fault, that it was Licht who betrayed them and not the other way around. But those two sat for months in a cell after having their memories read, probably feeling like they betrayed the man they owed their lives to, and all of a sudden one day their bodies start crumbling away and their souls get sacrificed. No one came to save them, they got no explanation, they died alone and either had no idea why or thought it was their punishment for their "betrayal".

I just have a lot of feels about the Eye of the Midnight Sun members. Especially since I've started playing the mobile game.

Yeah! That must have been genuinely horrifying for them, and all the other members who died that way with literally no explanation for what was happening to them.

Part of what I find compelling about Sally Valtos and Rades is that against all odds they survived despite everything they had been through, but it’s tragic that the others aren’t given any real chance to live too

January 2024 Reading Wrap-Up

I feel so many things for the Targaryens. Affection, exasperation... also really peeved that Aegon userper boy keeps being referred to as Aegon II but Rhaenyra is almost never Rhaenyra I.

Gave this a listen. Been ages since I last read this book. Still adore it.

Started a bit of a darcy-coates-a-thon while being snowed in for a week.

This one was very good. I adore Darcy Coates' writing and stories so much.

This one was the obvious next choice being snowed in. Heckin' creepy and scary!

A small break from scary stuff. Such a good series.

Did not know what was happening for a bit but it was terrifying. 😱

Well now I ship a chinese general and the norse god of thunder...I hope that was the point XD

I enjoyed this book okay, but it was very slow and there was a lot of victim blaming in here so it wasn't the best Agatha Christie

Underwater corpses...I fine, totally fine...not unerved at all.

Some of these were delightfully creepy...some needed a bit more page count than they got but overall a good batch of shorts.

Summary: You and Lando have been a thing for quite some time. After being friends for a year, you finally dared to ask Lando for an actual date. And that’s where everything starts. Rumours were heard but no confirmation, so they killed themselves until one LIVE with this idiot Charles.

Lando was an live. Talking loudly, cracking a laugh sometimes and most of the time raging at the game and his friends. You were in the bedroom next door, and he was annoying. This has been going on for at least two hours, and you have had enough. 

You wear shorts and one of his hoodies and head outside. Go, it was much quieter here. You take his car to the nearest drive-through and order some food for you to eat while walking the streets. 

Meanwhile, Lando was still gaming with Charles, George and Alex. All three of them trying to ruin Charles's games, as always. Making fun of Alex's noise and George's unknowable of the actual gaming world. 

Oh right! They are playing the Goat simulator. 

“FUCK off, screamed Charles for a hundred times as his game crashed once more.” 

“Oh, come on, Charles, buy yourself a real computer because you are ruining our game.” 

“Shut up, Lando!” 

“No, for real, it’s like the fifth time you made me crash because you couldn’t drive, and now because...

“Fuck off, go back to fuck Y/n and let me play.”

After this sentence, Charles went silent. Looking at his camera where his streamers were going wild after he had just said. Nobody dared to talk, and this only made things worst. Them being silent, with eyes and mouths open. 

If Lando could disappear under a rock right now, he’ll do it. Far far away from this computer and this life. It’s finally George who ends the awkward silence.

“Well, I gotta go, guys. See ya!”

Alex follows shortly after with a lame excuse for doing the laundry. Lando finally comes out of his trans and ends his life and game without a word, just closing everything. “Well, Y/n going to kill me, that’s for sure.”

Charles was the last one an live. Need help figuring out what to do. He just stays there looking at his black screen. He looks at the camera and makes an awkward sound before saying goodbye to everyone. Taking his head in his hands, he tries to find a logical escape from the bombshell he just dropped on you and Lando. 

He grabs his phone and dials the number of Lando. He tries several times but always ends up in the voicemail. “That’s bad, and that’s really bad... I’ve fucked up.”

You are utterly oblivious to the bombshell that just dropped on your head. While eating your Mcdonald's at sea, your phone starts blowing up.

Your Instagram, Twitter and even WhatsApp his on fire. You finally saw the name of Lando calling you, and you answered. 

“Hi, baby! What’s going on? My phone blowing up. What did you do?”

The other line stays silent for a while, thinking about what he might say to you. 

“Lando! Answer me!”

“Baby... we need to talk.”

“What happens?” 

“I can’t tell you on the phone. Come home, please.” 

“Okay, sure. But I am apprehensive now.” 

You go back to Lando’s house. Once you arrive, you see him waiting for you at the front door, looking shocked and scared simultaneously. 

You step out of the car, and he quickly takes your arm to make you enter, looking at both sides like a madman. 

“Okay, you’re starting to scare me.”

“Babe, sit down, please.” He said while taking your hands to the couch. “Charles may have exposed us.”

“What do you mean, might?”

“Well, we were on live playing and at some point, Charles’s game crashed and I...”

“Go to the point!” 

“Well, he might tell me to fuck off and fuck you.”

“Okay?”

“And I panicked, and I froze. Making everything worse...” 

You stay silent for a while, looking at him. 

“So... we’re out?”

“Yeah... I’m sorry. So sorry. I didn’t want it to happen, but...”

You didn’t give him a chance to finish his sentence and kissed him. You kiss him with passion. You’ve been waiting so long for him to make your relationship public you can’t find the words. You’re happy, very happy, because you won’t have to hide when you accompany him to races. You won’t have to see all those girls flirting with him thinking he’s single.

“You’re not mad?” He asks, confused.

“No. I actually would kiss Charles if he was here!” You said, pushing him into the couch to kiss him again.

Meet the unsung contributor to revolutionary breakthroughs in treating polio, cancer, HPV, and even COVID-19: Henrietta Lacks. Born in 1920 Roanoke, Virginia, Henrietta's mother Eliza died when she was only four, and she was ultimately raised by her maternal grandfather in Clover, Virginia. Henrietta worked as a tobacco farmer and attended a segregated school until the age of 14, when she gave birth to a son, Lawrence. A daughter, Elsie, was born three years later --to compound the family's difficulties, Elsie had cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Henrietta and her now-husband David Lacks moved to Turner Station (now Dundalk), Maryland where David had landed a job with a nearby steel plant. At the time Turner Station was one of the oldest African-American communities in Baltimore County and there was sufficient community support for the family to buy a house and produce three more children.

In 1951 at the age of 31, Henrietta died at Johns Hopkins Hospital of cervical cancer, mere months after the birth of the family's youngest son. But before her death --and without her or her family's consent-- during a biopsy two tumour cell samples were taken from Henrietta's cervix and sent to Johns Hopkins researchers. Hernietta's cells carried a unique trait: an ability to rapidly multiply, producing a new generation every 24 hours; a breakthrough that no other human cell had achieved. Prior to this discovery, only cells that had been transformed by viruses or genetic mutations carried such a characteristic. With the prospect of now being able to work with what amounted to the first-ever naturally-occurring immortal human cells, researchers created a patent on the HeLa cell line but hid the donor's true identity under a fake name: Helen Lane.

It is no exaggeration to state that in the 70 years since her death, Henrietta's cells have been bought, sold, packaged, and shipped by thousands of laboratories; with her cells being used as a baseline in as many as 74,000 different studies (including some Nobel Prize winners). Her cells have even been sent into space to study the effects of microgravity, and were instrumental in the Human Genome Project. While no actual law (or even a code of ethics) necessarily required doctors to ask permission before taking tissue from a terminal patient, there was a very clear Maryland state law on the books that forbade tissue removal from the dead without permission, throwing the situation into something of a legal grey area. However because Henrietta was poor, minimally educated, and Black, this standard was quietly (and easily) circumvented and she was never recognized for her monumental contributions to science and medicine ...and her family was never compensated. The family remained unaware of Henrietta's contribution until 1975, when the HeLa line's provenance finally became public. Henrietta had been buried in an unmarked grave in the family cemetery in Clover, Virginia but in 2010 a new headstone was donated and dedicated, acknowledging her phenomenal contribution. That same year the John Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational Research established a new Henrietta Lacks Memorial lecture series. A statue of Lacks was commissioned in 2022, to be erected in Lacks's birthplace of Roanoke, Virginia --pointedly replacing a previous statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, which had been removed following nationwide protests over the murder of George Floyd.

It's been a week since the whole situation with the [redacted user from the black clover fandom] and first of all, I just want to say, you are all amazing. With your help, you were able to make my and dozens of other people lives' so much easier. This makes me so happy to know that you guys are willing to do what's right.

Secondly, I just want to say, please don't let this one experience be how you see the black clover as a whole. I promise, that the fandom is nothing is like this. The black clover fandom is one of my favorite fandoms and this is literally the only drama I've dealt with. When it comes to our relationships with each other in this fandom, we are either friends, friendly with each other, or just not each other's radar. In fact, most of my moots are from the black clover fandom and I love them.

This was a Spiders Georg type of outlier adn should not even be thought of when interacting with the fandom.

Mod's Crush Competition Round 1

Hey guys! Based on the poll I sent out, it looks like some of you wanted to see what kind of fictional crushes I've had and of course I'm more than happy to oblige...

These are all crushes I've had through my lifetime so not all of them are current. Some of them I can explain and others make me question my life choices. They're also all male because I'm only attracted to men. (Maybe next time I'll do a tournament with your guys' crushes)

I tried to limit it to 3 characters per franchise but Yugioh ended up with 5 because there are so many series and I have seen all of them (It's been a very important fandom in my life). I also tried my best to not overrun it with anime. I admit my number of fictional crushes spiked when I started watching anime though. They know how to make them pretty.

Penny Headcanons

She's very close with Elliott and Leah. Not as close as she is with Maru, but they still get along very well. Her friendship with Elliott started because he was always in the library when she was tutoring the kids. Her friendship with Leah formed after a few special lessons of her teaching the kids about art and foraging. Leah's also offered to handle the cooking classes, considering Penny's less-than-good culinary skills.

Her current goal is to get into university. She hopes to become a teacher one day, and you can't do that without a degree. But being so poor and basically stranded in the valley now that the bus doesn't work, she can't really escape.

She likes to knit little toys. Her favourite one to knit is a little junimo, but she does all sorts of things. She made matching junimo for her and the kids as a sort of friendship bracelet. She's also made little junimos for pride!

Her Flower Dance dress is from multiple generations ago. It belonged to the great, great aunt on her mother's side. Luckily all of her family members are around the same size, so she didn't have much trouble getting into it. She earns a lot of points in the Flower Queen voting for wearing an antique piece. The older residents love it.

Her favourite animal is a rabbit. If she was ever to see the farmer's rabbits, she might just die from the cuteness. Her favourites are the black and white ones. But she's also a fan of all of them!

She also loves cows. Any farm animals really, but cows especially. She thinks they're so cute. Especially the babies! If she could, she would adopt one like her child and carry it around everywhere.

She's scared of geese. One bit her at a park and she's hated them ever since. Odd that geese are one of her favourite foods, isn't it? Can't be that she gets some weird feeling of revenge eating it. No, never...

I never liked her heart event with George. It just felt so off. So, to try and solve that issue, she's a lot more respectful of people's boundaries. She always makes sure everyone's comfortable with everything and basically just imagine that heart event went completely differently.

She makes flower crowns for everyone else. She's really good at them, too. Her favourite ones are with daisies and clovers. Simple, but a classic. Jas and Haley love her for them.

I'm not as close with Penny so I don't know as much about her, but these HCs were really fun to write! This is the first one of me catching up with all the things on my to-do list. Only 38 left lol.

“Hey! How’s it goin’? Phew… I’m Poppy Clover. I’m the twin sister of Brenda’s husband, wife of Kyle the Intelligent Canine, and the great-grandma of Melody, the Optimistic Squirrel.”

She has somewhat of a ghostly appearance,

“Aaaanywaaayy~ I am a poet who died of dizziness. Where’s my twin brother? Oh! He’s on a date with Brenda… *shudder* ask us, please! Oh! And if you want to ask my brother, you can do it now!”

Anti-Lawn & the Necessity of Gardening - 01 / ???

Deterritorialization through urban gardening

“The gardener's generous gesture of free planting has a long history, in which it is often possible to identify a radical critique of private property interwoven with a statement of communal interest, mutual aid and cooperation. This is less to do with a demarcated territory of the (private, domestic) garden. George McKay, Radical Gardening, 155.

The American suburban lawn is an extension of territorial claims within suburban housing, acting as a cultural medium to present certain values and maintain the status quo of grasping some sort of ‘American Dream’:

If I keep a clean lawn then I am a respected member of the community, I look down on those who haven’t mowed their lawn. 

As a uniform plane the lawn provides a medium for non-productive landscaping namely for poaceae or gramineae AKA grass, providing no positive ecological, social, or economic value; with its costs and effects on the environment being a driver of climate change. (1) Kentucky Bluegrass is currently the main ecology of a sub-urban biota, being the most prominent and most fertilized crop in North America. The species is so prominent and a defining feature of suburban lawns it’s hard to think of it as being anything other than native, however blue grass is an invasive species that is a remnant of settler colonialism’s ties to the biota and the frontier; having been brought and mixed into the existing biota by early European colonizers. (2)

Deterritorialization of the sub-urban lawn would require a disruption of the existing fabric through an insertion / replacement of blue grass with native plantings. The ideology of ‘every lawn is a farm’ needs to be adopted. I mainly pull on the images of Keith Krumweide’s Atlas of Another America, as a reimagining of suburbia. While Krumweide’s main fictional endeavors revolve around developing the single family home into communal super homes; the pastoral themes and romanticized paintings that serve as the backdrop for these homes are white and settler colonialism in nature, however his representations still address the environment in which suburbia is placed. While a full productive farm in a sub-urban would be radical and a worthy goal in its own right, it’s limited to those who can afford to own the existing territory. 

For this experiment we must turn to the drosscape found within the urban fabric, where the lawn is still an ever present medium, making up public parks, institutions, and multi-family housing complexes that continue to promote sub-urban ecology. The seed bomb becomes an indistinct and affordable method to practice anti-lawn methodologies. A seed bomb, aka a seed ball, is a self-contained weapon used by guerrilla gardeners, containing seeds and compost that can be throw on lawns. 

Recipe (3)

Start with three parts dried compost, one part seeds, five parts soil and one or two parts water. 

Sift the dry ingredients together, add the water and roll the mixture into balls. Let them dry for one or two days.

The preferred seeds are native to Minnesota, including sunflowers, black-eyed Susans, coneflowers and clover.
