eat your spells!
like really, but not on normal paper with inks and stuff, that’s yucky. allow me to explain some German folk stuff
Okay so have yall heard of Schluckbildchen and Esszettel? Well, they were a very popular type of folk medicine in Germany through the 1800’s and some into the last century. Schluckbildchen is German meaning “swallowable pictures” and then Esszettel in Hungarian means “meal slip”. These would be small pieces  of paper that would be eaten in order to cure illnesses and fevers, general healing. But, Schluckbildchen is a bit different from Esszettle. These would be smaller squares and usually have Mary imagery(you’ll see a lot of OL of Altötting or the Virgin Mary) or saints. Here’s some examples!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These wouldn’t really have words other than names of saints if there’s a saint on one, the name of the pilgrimage spot these were gotten, or a word/acronym associated with the devotional imagery.
An Esszettel paper would be bigger and have prayers, Bible verses, or folk adeges/sayings and would have no imagery. These were more of a sigil to stick in your food and eat it! Sometimes people would use these to cure rabies in animals, similar to using sator squares to ward off rabies. Generally, an Esszettel is more specific while a schluckbildchen is about the healing properties associated with the devotional images.
Now back to “eat your spells”, I was inspired by this to share ideas I have on doing this but making it more personal and pagan or including a different spirit
Instead of paper
Bread (bread is important in German folk magic!)
Buttered toast
crackers
cookies
wafer paper
Instead of ink
honey
scratch out the words on the buttered toast with a knife or needle!
icing
milk + food coloring
tea
Coffee
What you write/draw is up to you!
Write a prayer for one of your deities or a litany with their healing and protective titles!
Make a sigil as simple or as intricate as you would like or make your own devotional doodles
Implement some color magic
different edible writing mediums based on their magical properties(honey for sweetening or tea with specified herbs) Personalize and make it fit for you!
happy crafting witches, be safe and don’t eat paper or pen ink please

this is a long shot but do you have any information on German folk magic or German American folk magic?
I'm not a German folk practioner but you are in luck because I do know of a few creators online who are! They'll do a hell of a lot better job at directing you to good information than I can.
I'd recommend doing the usual stuff like searching on social media platforms for relevant tags like #germanfolkmagic #braucheri & #hexe. Learn the language, read the folktales, learn some recipes, listen to the folk music & learn the history. When searching online, use whichever web browser is commonly used in Germany because that'll open you up to a lot more information.
There are a few awesome German & German American folk practitioners on tiktok I follow. Go check their content out & look on their Linktrees for more information. I think all of them are on YouTube as well.
Hexe Marie ◇ A Hearth Witch ◇ De Spokenkieker
For more Pennsylvania Dutch folk magic (also known as Powwow or Braucheri), i'd recommend these channels on YouTube:
The Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center
The Pfalzisch Braucher (I'm pretty sure Olivia's also on Tiktok)
The Powwow Guy
Douglas Maderford
Hopefully this gives you a good place to start. ❤️

Folk Magic Tidbit
Buttered bread is a wonderful spellwork medium. Quick healing spell or an energizer to start the day? Or whatever you may be needing in a pinch, but would like to do magic that requires less energy. Slather up some toast and carve your prayers, incantations, or magical spell phrases into it with a pin or knife and eat it. Maybe try adding some extra toppings that boost your intentions of the toast. Bonus if you’ve churned the butter/baked the bread yourself🧈✨

The Glöcklerlauf is a tradition practiced in the Salzkammergut region of Austria with pre-Christian roots. This parade of Glöckler (“bell-ringers”) who carry bells and large, lit-up caps marks the end of the Rauhnächte, the darkest and most dangerous time of the year. This parade of art and light chases out the evil winter spirits and ushers in a new season of good and light.
In my town, these Glöckler run 8 kilometers through our neighborhoods, and the caps they carry weigh around 14 kilos. The run takes about 3 hours to complete. The caps represent local landmarks, stories, and even biblical scenes. They’re handmade and passed down for many years.
Food, drinks, and donations are given to the Glöckler to thank them for protecting our villages by ushering in light. This is my second favorite winter tradition here! It’s much more gorgeous in person.

Fern's introduction to: Unicorns
(Disclaimer, this is my personal view on these spirits and therefore upg heavy)
Tumblr media
To me, unicorns are creatures that bring hope, joy, and wonder when we most need it. They remind us there is beauty and magic to be found everywhere, even in the smallest things.
They are part of the Fair Folk, of the holden or helpful/blessing folk. Unicorns are healers, and their horn can purify water and other substances, clearing them of poisons. They invite us to frolic with them, to embrace our own authentic self and our inner child. But, that horn is not for show. They are courageous and can be fierce when defending their homes or the ones they call theirs. They are also symbols of freedom, unable to be caught or brought down.
Unicorns are often tied to “purity” bringing to mind the tapestry of the virgin and the unicorn. However, fuck purity culture, we don’t need to be virgins to call upon the unicorn. Purity in their case means pure of heart, in the sense that you are honest, above all, with yourself. That you see and live your own truth, even in the tiniest ways. It takes courage to be authentic, and the unicorns see and support us in exploring and expressing our own selves.
In working with unicorns and their magic I have found so much love and magic. Even in this short time they have fit in seamlessly into my practice of hopepunk and authenticity. They are kind, they are uplifting, and they show me the wondrous and beautiful things still in this world.

I am excited to share that my original artwork ‘Witches’ Night on Hexenkopf Rock’ is featured in the third edition of Ned D. Heindel’s ‘Hexenkopf: History, Healing, & Hexeri’! You can grab a copy for yourself from The Sigal Museum. It is an honor to be included in such a wonderful book that preserves a part of Pennsylvanian history and the history of Pennsylvanian folk magic!
In 2016, I unearthed a rare copy of the first edition of this book (published under a slightly different title in 1974, seen in the third photo) at my grandmother’s house and it is what inspired me to create ‘Witches’ Night on Hexenkopf Rock.’
The rock itself is a stony summit in Williams Township, PA that has long been associated with magic, ritual, and witchcraft. ‘Hexenkopf: History, Healing, and Hexeri’ takes an in-depth view at the history and folklore surrounding Hexenkopf Rock and examines how Braucherei, or PA German folk magic, first developed in the area and contributed to the rock’s legends. Also discussed are stories of Native American magic, witch gatherings, ominous omens, and apparitions that have helped bolster Hexenkopf rock’s mysterious reputation. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in American folk magic and Pennsylvanian lore!

My religious practice is Germanic and Celtic with a touch of Slavic and Norse.
My magical practice, however, I'm aiming at German (a nod to my German and Pennsylvania Dutch ancestors) and English, as the folk magic that is accessible to me here is from the English who colonised Australia.
Interestingly, my paganism and my magic don't really overlap or mix.

From annekekatharina (previously a.hearth.witch)
By far, the question I get asked the most is “what do I practice if my ancestors came from different places?” Frankly, there’s no one right answer—it depends on the individual.
Having a DNA link to a culture doesn’t mean there’s a cultural link—culture is lived and shared. The first step? Figure out how you culturally identify. Learn about your family, and identify where you feel called the most. If you’re disconnected, then reconnect to the history, diaspora, food, and stories.
Many practices share similar pre-Christian roots. Many practices were also converged during the various migration waves to the US. Find what overlaps. Find what resonates.
Some things will mesh, and some won’t. It may take time, and that’s okay. It’s not a sprint.
