Every day I am reminded how spoiled I was in SPN fandom for the amazing amount of creative work that was shared over the years. The reason the SPN fandom is infamous for having a gif for everything is because talented individuals spent years of their lives devoting their time to giffing every single second of that show. I remember in the week following each new episode airing there would be hundreds of new gifsets circulating on tumblr documenting every single scene in the episode. It was wonderful.

I wish we had that for other fandoms. The Sandman is a beautiful show and if I had the skills and the knowledge I would gif every second of it myself, but I don't.

If you are a Sandman gifmaker please tag me in your gifsets. I will reblog them over and over again I promise you. I wish modern tumblr was more like old school tumblr, where creativity was applauded and people reblogged everything.

ANNOUNCING THE 2023 F1BLR CREATOR'S FESTIVAL!

here to encourage and support the people who keep f1blr running!!

every week of august, we have challenges available for creators of all technical proficiencies. these challenges include weekly prompts, wildcard events (that we’ll be announcing later), and more!

we’re also introducing a fun rewards system! for every festival creation tagged #f1blrcreatorsfest23 by a registered participant, we will be giving out gold stars! earn enough gold stars over the course of the month from our various events, and you can get yourself a cute superlicense and qualify for prize draws! (more on this below the cut.)

you’re welcome to participate in the festival without registering—we will love and shower praise on your creations either way <3 but gold stars and other prizes such as gift cards will only be given to registered users.

WHAT IS THE F1BLR CREATOR’S FEST?

f1blr creator’s fest is a month-long festival event meant to support, encourage, and highlight the work of visual creatives on formula 1 tumblr. from gifs of memorable moments to beautiful photo edits, the f1blr creators community keeps the fandom running! with the state of socmed today, the value of these creations has been diminished to “content.” but creatives in this community are very much artists! we hope to start a dialogue this month about the importance of supporting creators on f1blr, to the end that we can revive a once-vibrant community of visual creatives and encourage an environment where people feel inspired and safe to explore their art.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

all creators are welcome to take part to whatever extent they’d like! that said, the themes and wildcard events were made with visual creation in mind, such as gifmaking, graphics art, photo editing, photo manipulations, graphic design and video editing.

WHAT ARE WILDCARD EVENTS?

they’re additional events we’ve got planned for the community! more info on this will be announced at the start of the festival.

WHAT’S THE TEA ON SUPERLICENSES?

similar to the real program for drivers, we will award superlicenses to creators who accumulate a minimum of 15 points (in our case, gold stars). these superlicenses are a fun, bragging rights kind of thing–nothing serious! if you earn a superlicense, you’ll receive a digital certificate at the end of the festival, with the option to make it physical; festival organizers have committed to mailing out gold star stickers and nice, official-looking certificates! as well (and if possible), if you’d like a print(s) of one of your edits, that can be included too.

LOTTERIES / PRIZE DRAWS??

yep, we're dropping real cash money on this! prizes won't be Huge, $10 online gift cards and the like, enough for an iced coffee from starbucks. but hopefully they provide a little bit more of an incentive to participate, and allow for us to give back to the community at large!

hello i'm sorry people complain on your gifsets i am not a gifmaker myself but the process from what i understand seems very lengthy and i am always very impressed with gifmakers in general but YOURS! they are always so crisp and clean and while they're not for fandoms i'm in most of the time i still enjoy scrolling through them immensely. thank you for making them! thank you for being a creator and putting your creations out into the world for others to enjoy. it's a gift and shouldn't be taken lightly ok i hope you have a nice night

honestly there is far more that goes into gifmaking than people realise before you've even loaded a single screencap into photoshop, trying to procure HQ downloads isn't easy, then mastering colouring and techniques eeek it's a lot.

it's crazy the comments people leave in the tags from bodyshaming actors, complaining the set isn't specific to their vision, being a full on anti of said media and rb to tell me they hate it, being gross and parasocial about actors etc. we do this for free for you to enjoy and real talk it's not always free for us to create, software/storage costs money.

all in all to say, no matter the quality if someone puts out their creation whether it be art, fic, gifset, meta etc be respectful about it. I will never leave a negative or mean comment if it's something I don't enjoy I simply scroll on by, it's that simple. fandom in general has become far more negative than it used to be, which is why there isn't as much content being produced alongside the lack of reblogs etc.

2 - who are some your fav creators/mutuals?

this fandom has soo many talented creators! some of my fav mutuals would be @mutantmanifesto for her beautiful art. the way she uses watercolor is stunning but it's really her sketching style that Im in love with! there's so much character and texture in each of her drawings that makes her art so special to me!! one mutual I crush on from afar is @rebeccapearson! whenever I see their gifs on my feed, Im always in awe at their color. hbo war shows are beautifully shot yet very dark/gray, so I admire her talent in creating vibrant and eye-catching gifsets<3 there are so many more creators I'd like to call out but I fear im starting to yap so I'll shoutout just a few more! @lamialamia has a great sense of humor in both her fic and posts, @blood-mocha-latte is all-around talented in all kind of fanworks, and @supervalcsi is an amazing gifmaker who also started/runs THE @hbowardaily!!! 💗

8 - your fav hbowar content you've ever made?

in terms of gifs, I was really happy with how this gifset for bob came out in terms of color! for video edits, this bradnate one felt rewarding for me to experiment in AE with creating film effects and transitions. plus it was made for lenora and i love making edits for ppl which made it all more fun :)

27 - what's your fav moment during your time in the fandom?

definitely the recent secret santa exchange! it was super fun not only making gifts but also seeing everyone elses gifts, like this curation by bel is literally soooo so beautiful & this fic by rie sent me into a baberoe orbit. but my highlight was def receiving this fic by @ackackh - hes one of my fav writers ever & to have such a beautiful story written for me was just surreal!!!! :')

after hbomberguy's new video, i have been thinking about plagiarism and remembering the absolutely weirdest instance of it in my life.. someone in the fandom i was in at the time, straight up "plagiarized" tags here on tumblr?? it was so strange!

i remember first noticing her doing it to me. like i would read this person's tags on a gifset or whatever, and they would be the exact same as mine with just a few words changed slightly. and it felt so silly, so i was not about to go confront her about it or anything. but i did get curious and went to her blog and quickly found more examples of this blog doing it to both me and other blogs i followed. i remember talking to a few of them about it, and there were some vague posts about it that got circulated, but i don't think anyone ever directly confronted her or called her out or anything.

cause it was just tumblr tags, right?? like this is the definition of not that serious. we're talking about very very short texts, mostly just not thought out at all, commentary about the scene, the characters, the acting, or the choices of the gifmaker etc. and obviously there is very little to gain from stealing someone's tumblr tags, right??

this was is 2017, and at least in the fandom i am talking about, "peer reviewed" tags being posted and then widely reblogged in addition to the original post was quite common, so i guess there was some fandom clout to gain, as there were a few blogs i think were mainly well known because of this. but still, people have always joked about how even large followings on this site is actually not useful in any meaningful capacity.

ultimately, what i remember thinking was.. what is the point of being in fandom but just take other people's words to express yourself about the show?? like why not just reblog posts and gifsets and not add any tags?? it felt so weird to have this blog pop up everywhere and i always felt like 'why is she even here? does she like the show? what is she trying to do with this pretty obvious copying of other blogs' tags?'

i guess this whole james somerton thing reminded me in a weird way of this. when i first heard of this, when the hbomberguy video dropped, i was kinda thinking that it is a strange niche to plagiarize in. like if you actually don't have anything to say, why steal people's work to talk about lgbtq+ topics. why not go straight to something that is more popular or will likely get you more money? but idk then i remembered we had that "tag stealer" as i remember i used to call her, and i think this kind of thing (if you want to call it copying, stealing or plagiarism) is a lot more complex than just straight up gifting. i am willing to bet you will find people in all kinds of communities, big and small, who just don't have stuff to say or don't know how to say it, and the things they write and say are just other people's words, spat back out.

Other Creators Appreciation

Oh, you thought I was done? No! Turns out there are lots of people in this community who don't quite fall into the boxes of "visual art" or "writing" but still make, compile, or help bring about creativity in this fandom, and they deserve to be recognized!

So some that are special to me: @astralarias's gifs and griffon riding videos, @moth-tea-merchant's Gyala delves audio recordings, @red-catmander's absolutely GLORIOUS textposts that never fail to make me laugh, @praise-joko's excellent taste in art (and THANK YOU for reblogging all the art party stuff so I can like it) and last but not least @leafofkudzu's art parties, which finally gave me the push I needed to jump onto gw2blr in the first place. You guys rock.

You know what also rocks? @talk-of-tyria's giant database of ambient dialogue. @dotmander organizing an art gift exchange. That entire griffon flying guild. That entire roller beetle racing guild. All the people who edit the wiki so I can find collectibles and learn ridiculously specific lore details. Hardstuck, SnowCrows, Mukluk, and all the other people who make guides and builds for endgame content. All the people who made and maintain BlishHUD. Anyone who runs raid/fractal/strike trainings or just pops up a Commander tag for the metas. Organizing, leading, and compiling stuff is hard, and should be acknowledged and respected! You people keep the fandom running and build community, and for that I honor your work.

Reblog, add your favorites, tag people whose names I don't know, and if you fall into these categories be proud of yourself! Our leaders, gifmakers, compilers, editors, and trainers do a lot of hard work behind the scenes so that we can have fun, so let's give them a little recognition.

It's my 3 year anniversary of watching dteam content and I am so proud of all the growth the dteam have done! I wouldn't be the person I am today with out them and it's been so incredible to see their progress throughout the years! The community's had its ups and downs but I'm so glad to be a part of it. Our Flag Means Secret Santa Sign-Ups open November 10th!

Our Flag Means Secret Santa is a fanwork exchange for the Our Flag Means Death fandom, welcoming all (18+) creators to join in the fun.

Whether you are are a writer, and artist, a gifmaker, if your favorite character is Stede or Izzy or The Widow Evelyn Higgins, you're welcome to join in the gifting season.

This exchange is 18+, as you are allowed to prompt explicit works, though no one is obligated to create an explicit work if they do not wish to.

Sign ups open November 10th. Due to limited people running the exchange, they will go until there are 150 participants (or November 24th, at the latest, but if you want in, sign up early!).

All you need to sign up is an email address, 3 prompts to give your Secret Santa, and a willingness to create something inspired by the prompts you'll be given. Following @ourflagmeanssecretsanta is optional, but it is the easiest way to know when sign-ups open and to see all the wonderful works when they go up!

Hi Nonnie! Thank you for asking this question. The answer is that yes, I do. And I hope others can join me in respectfully asking people who don't credit gifmakers (possibly because they're uninformed and don't know fandom etiquette) to respect those who work hard to put out content everyone can enjoy and do the bare minimum for them, which is giving credit where credit is due.
