Boygenius Are Right at Home at Madison Square Garden

Boygenius – Madison Square Garden – October 2, 2023

Boy (!), did these people love those people. These people were all of us — the assembled throng at Madison Square Garden on Monday night, anyway — deeply enthralled by what was occurring on the stage and the vibe filling up the whole place. Those people were boygenius — the inspired supergroup comprising Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers — headlining there for the first time and completely owning it.

Supergroups are usually good-natured stunts, or at least don’t feel set up for any kind of real longevity. Boygenius, on the other hand, are convincingly a band. The three principals share an affinity for the space where open-armed, melancholy, confessional folk-rock meets steely, fist-pumping resolve, and while their individual styles are different, boygenius are the through line among them where somehow all this deeply intimate, soul-bearing music translates to a huge stage, way bigger than its individual parts, losing none of its quietly (and sometimes un-quietly) devastating power.

They began the set a cappella, singing “Within You Without Them” from backstage in gorgeous three-part harmonies, like a next-generation Emmylou Harris/Alison Krauss/Gillian Welch. From there they took the main stage to rapturous applause in front of a sturdy four-piece band — drummer Madden Klass, bassist Tiana Ohara, keyboardist Sarah Goldstone and well-utilized multi-instrumentalist Melina Duerte — and sliced into “$20” and “Satanist,” both full-throated rockers, sometimes with screams, as if to remind us that despite sometimes-delicate music, this would not be a delicate show.

Throughout it, boygenius proved masters of balance. The three-part harmonies returned to great effect on tunes like “True Blue.” Each took multiple turns singing lead vocals, drawing briefly from their own catalogs — Baker’s “Favor,” Bridgers’ “Graceland Too,” Dacus’ “Please Stay” — but focusing largely on the already-formidable boygenius catalog — the tender, ethereal, pained “Emily I’m Sorry,” the heavy “Bite the Hand,” the stirring “Me and My Dog,” all highlights.

There were newer songs, too: The set closed with “Powers,” debuted a few nights earlier in Philadelphia and one of four tunes the band played late in the show from a B-stage, immersing in the audience — endlessly, that joyful, triumphant vibe. Joined by opener MUNA for the final encore, “Salt in the Wound,” boygenius left us feeling benedictory — take these good feelings and embrace them for how beautifully raw they really are. —Chad Berndtson | @Cberndtson

Invincible "In About Six Hours I lose my Virginity to a Fish" Review

Hot off the season premiere last week Invincible looks to keep the season progressing. They certainly take a relentless approach in this episode with multiple storylines and plot threads that add depth to many of the core characters.

We shall start with Invincible and the things he deals with during this episode. Mark is coming up to his high school graduation, which is rudely interrupted by his old friend Doc Seismic. Mark then continues to deal with the fall out of his fathers actions when he is summoned to Atlantis to face trial. We are really seeing the way trauma affects people as Mark is persistent in doing the opposite way from his father. Most shows would simplify this down to easy details while Invincible as a series chooses to make it the primary focus. It definitely allows this to branch into the other storylines.

Elsewhere in this episode, we begin to see the frustration Mark's double life is having with Amber. We also see the struggle Atom Eve is having with making the right choice for the right reasons. All of this stems from what occurred during season one. The choice for Eve to want to help and have good intentions was seen to backfire. What this series does so well is that it reminds those around superheroes often don't have powers, but the trauma of superhero life has an impact on them as well.

So much happens in this episode from a villainous perspective and from a world building perspective. We catch glimpses of The Lizard League, the Sequids, as well as Angstrom Levy, and what his next move is. We know there are two episodes left before a break. It is doubtful all of the threads introduced in this episode will be resolved, but it lays the foundations for the remainder of the season. I, for one, am loving every aspect of this season and the character and world building it has accomplished in two hours. There is plenty more to come, and I will be right there waiting. I guess I love Shiala most. She‘s just badass and beautiful and mysterious and the first asari to meld with you.. And she is low key resistant to indoctrination. She had lots of potential.

I also loved Rila. She‘s so brave. And also so fucking beautiful, can you tell I love asari.

Victus was quite charming too. And Kelly is also a sweetheart and very underrated.

🧩 - Favorite squadmate combination and why do you like this combination so much?

Ashley & Wrex for ME1. Because they have best friends potential, I swear. I love their elevator conversations in ME1. There‘s one where he compliments Ash‘s combat skills and says something about loving to fight with women because it gives the fight a different flavor. Love that one.

Aside from that, for ME2 I love bringing characters who are very polar opposites to each other. Like Samara & Mordin or Miranda & Zaeed.

TOO FUCKING MANY CHARACTERS.

Mordin‘s death is so horrible and it will haunt me forever. The fact that he isn‘t there at the Citadel DLC party.. Can you imagine what the party would have been with Mordin around? Dancing Mordin? Mordin/Joker banter? Mordin meeting the SR1 crew? Drunk Mordin? I get it his death makes a lovely plot device (Adding more drama), but man.. It hurt. He is one of my favorites.

Legion‘s death was also pretty damn sad. Tali should‘ve made a copy of him and uploaded it into another geth body. :(

Then, Liselle from the books. How dare you BioWare. You introduce Aria T‘loaks daughter, and then take her away, in the most ridiculous way! No way Kai Leng managed to kill Aria‘s daughter. I don‘t give a fuck she was ambushed, Aria‘s daughter is way too skilled to be killed off by some Cerberus jackass.

And Gillian Grayson. She is the most powerful biotic in existence and you wanna convince me Kai Leng can kill her with a toothbrush. Excuse me. At least the book was declared non canon though, so that means Gillian is alive and well in canon, probably. 😊

I didn‘t like Grayson‘s death in the books either because.. all that redemption arc only to end like this? Thanks to Kai Leng too.

Who also took Thane. Damn I just noticed 3/5 of the mentioned characters were killed by Kai Leng. It‘s 4 if you add Miranda who can die by his hands in ME3.

All of those characters are alive to me.
