TO EVERYONE OF LEGAL AGE IN INDIA
If you are a citizen of the country, I am begging you to vote in the National Elections, 2024.
In 2014, the turnout of youth (inclusive of first time voters) was at a staggering 70%. In 2019, this number decreased quite a bit.
Today, in 2024, that number has decreased drastically. Voter registration among youth currently ranges for somewhere between 17% in Bihar, 21% in NCR, 23% in UP, to around 35% in major cities with maximum youth population.
Only 38% of the first time eligible voters have registers for National Elections this time.
I understand. We are all tired. The ruling party has made a mockery of the elections. I 100% get it. But please, you all need to vote. Even if you’re tired, even if you see no hope of things changing even this time. You still need to vote.
I know everybody says it but it bears repeating, every single vote counts.
If you are a student, there’s a holiday during all the 5 phase dates. If you are a working adult, your company legally needs to allow you a holiday on the day. I travelled back to my hometown to vote today because it fucking matters.
Please vote, if you can. Please vote, if you care.
This election results should not be about which party will lead the country to the top five developing nations. This elections should be about which party will let the country breathe for another four years.
I’m sincerely requesting you all to vote. If not today, then tomorrow, things will change. But they won’t, unless, you vote.
Vote for yourself. Vote for the ones who cannot. Vote for the ones whose voices will never be heard. Vote for the ones who made noise, made themselves hurt and are suffering for their words. Vote for everyone who dealt with unimaginable pain in the last 8 years. Vote to give this country another chance.

World war 2 officially started when Germany invaded Poland, but prior to that Germany had already annexed a number of territories and the rest of the Europe just meekly accepted.
When russia annexed Georgia and crimea Europe once again accepted the aggression and the result is full blown invasion of Ukraine.
At what point do we learn from history???
Will history repeat itself???

XLE.LIFE’s editor Kai (Kari) Altmann is a fanatic for Indofuturism(s) and Desifuturism(s), so when she saw Prateek Arora’s AI-assisted concept images on Instagram she was instantly hooked.
She managed to grab Prateek for a meetup and eventually 5 Questions on the record back in 2023 in Mumbai. Here is the interview over a year later, on the occasion of the release of KALKI 2898 AD, India’s most ambitious Indofuturist movie so far, coming in the afterglow of Dune 2, Furiosa, Dev Patel’s Monkey Man and others. It’s been quite a year for cinema, for Desi cinema, and for Indofuturism/Desifuturism too...

Musings:
Sufi × Desi. Nothing else needs to be said. I first heard another iteration of this classic song at Global Village in Dubai. There were performances in the Pakistan Pavilion and they finished their show to this song. Transfixed is the word. The music and their coordinated Sufi dance, the costumes and the feel of the crowd. Even though just the song remains without all these other entrapments, I'm still transfixed.

I'm kind of in awe of people whose second language is English but write as well or better than me.
I mean I'm bilingual, but like most South Asians raised urban upper(ish) middle class, English is my first language and my mother tongue my second. I've had a complex at how much easier and more fluent I am in English compared to Sinhalese (especially written Sinhalese, which is stupid formal) since I was a child. Which is ironic, because I could barely speak in English until I was six, and got harrassed for that until then. This is why I hate it when white Anglo people think English is less mine than theirs. I lost my mother tongue to assimilate into this language and I'm still treated like an outsider.
So I'm in awe when people have a different first language but are just as fluent and expert in English. Some of these writers are also as good in a third. Right now I'm reading a beautifully written fanfic from someone whose first language is Spanish. It blows my mind honestly. To me, those are the people who actually deserve to say they have "language skills". Feel like an imposter when I say it, or other people say I do. I have English skills. It's not the same.
Idk being bullied by my fundie nationalist teachers and classmates for being a hyperverbal bookworm exclusively in English has fucked up my relationship with my one real skill, probably for the rest of my life. The only thing I feel really good about is that I was the one who taught myself English. My baby self got so sick of being talked down to and confused by my teachers that I found a Famous Five book, slogged through it on my own, and loved it so much I struggled through as many as I could find. I was writing in English essay competitions by the following year.
But the easier it got to handle English, the more difficult Sinhalese became, and I was soon being shamed for the opposite reason. My ADHD wouldn't let me replicate the same success with Sinhalese. I thought of myself as a lazy arse who "never applied herself" until I realized I had ADHD a few years ago. Dunno if I can let go of that perception of myself any time soon, and feel proud of what comes easy to me without qualifiers.
Language alienation is real, y'all.

Kartiki Gonsalves’ documentary debut, “The Elephant Whisperers,” shines a spotlight on the ways in which climate change and human encroachment are rapidly destroying the habitats of Asian elephants. The film’s dire warning is subtly woven into a heartfelt narrative about forging family in unlikely places with elephant caretakers Bomman and Bellie at its core. The duo raise an orphaned elephant named Raghu, whom they’ve cared for since infancy, as well as another calf named Ammu.

I don't even know what Indian school are teaching or what even the point is... I learned from a white guy that something called The Indian Ocean Trade Route existed that connected coasts of Africa, Egypt and the Arabian world to India and other Asian countries including China. It was just as important as The Silk Road. In like - everything. But in 23 years of living in India - Never heard of it.

Re: Mikus of the World
When I see Mikus from North-North America & Western Europe: "I really like this artstyle and the references the artist has managed to sneak in. Oh, and it's really nice how different artists from the same area have different conceptions of their own culture."
When I see Mikus from the global south, indigenous cultures, and other less-frequently-seen cultures of the rest of the World: "FRHGFDSEARWTG HNBVCBNTYUIREDSCPWE THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER! I PLEDGE MY SWORD TO YOU, DEAR ARTIST! Oh look at the details in the clothing! Oh look at the beauty! I wanna see her life! I wanna be her! I wanna live in that place! There will never be anything more despicable than building and celebrating, and forcing a nation to celebrate on the taxpayers money, a temple build on the mass graves of Muslims. The Hindu nationalist state, has proved again that this nation belongs to only Hindus.
Babri Masjid, 1992
Tumblr media
Ram Temple, 2024
Tumblr media
A bit of context for those who don’t know about the issue:
Babri Masjid, was a mosque in Ayodhya, India. It was built in the 16th century by the Mughal Empire. Babri Masjid was a holy place for the Muslims in the country. There’s a history of communalism (created by the British Empire) between Hindus (the majority religion) and Muslims (the minority) in the country.
In 1992, Babri Masjid was attacked and demolished by Hindu extremists who believed that the mosque was built on the site of birthplace of Ram (Hindu god). Thousands of people lost their lives. Thousands of Muslims were killed in cold blood by a hyper-nationalist state.
In 2010, after decades of Muslims fighting for justice, the Allahabad High Court upheld the claim that the mosque was built on Ram’s birth place. Muslims were also awarded one-third area of the site for the construction of a mosque. However, thr decision was subsequently appealed by all parties to the Indian Supreme Court, wherein a five judge bench heard a title suit from August to October 2019. On 9 November 2019, the Supreme Court quashed the lower court's judgement and ordered the entire site to be handed over to a trust to build the Hindu temple.
Today, 22nd January, 2024, marks the inaugural of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. On a site that is so deeply entrenched within a community’s blood, pain and trauma. While these Hindu nationalists celebrate, every Muslim in the country feels more scared. Muslims in India have always been unlawfully detained, persecuted, punished and killed throughout the past seven decades but it has only worsened ever since BJP, the ruling party came in power. Celebrities, sportsperson, politicians and millions of people travelled to Ayodhya to celebrate this tremendous failure of the state.
Today, the Indian constitution lies under those thousands grave.
If any one of you celebrated, I hope you understand the gravity of your actions. I hope you understand what you all set in motion. I hope that one day, you understand and that there is no redemption for you after that.
I hope you all rot in hell.
Here’s a short poem by Rabindranath Tagore about an old god, a new temple, an arrogant king and many hungry and homeless ordinary people.

Can I also say that despite their multiple attempts, JJKs are actually pretty stupid? Like this isn’t even me being racist or anything coz I am desi myself. But you can so easily gauge that majority of his fans come from a pretty regressive country with little to no global exposure and his fans specifically also lack any kind of common sense or cognitive abilities. Their brains simply can’t process nuance. You can’t pull off making a fake website if you can’t spell correctly or add in the right names of the artists. They don’t know anything about charting or streaming because they simply aren’t exposed to it. I see so many of his akgaes writing articles on PANKOPOP and all and I am like how are you all this illiterate? Not a single person in there who can form a cohesive sentence? In the big year of 2024 and ChatGPT? And you decided to do long form? It’s embarrassing for all of you. Plus now PJMs would respond with his exhibition not selling out, his songs not reentering US charts, his 7th week BB spot being fully driven by radio. Like. The material is there, why would you start this war?
That and/or just young in age cause Usain Bolt is entirely too famous of an athlete for whoever made that website to think nobody would catch that. But you make a real good point with that last bit though, cause it’s true. Pjms do not check in on what JK has going on unless prompted by jjks to look into it for debunking reasons. Cause I didn’t know that his exhibition still hasn’t sold out and Samsung was pulling a BP by giving away free tickets if you buy a photo frame. Just like I didn’t know that his fan base held a birthday event with a blow up plush, no one came and somebody busted it open which caused it to deflate and that had to tape it back together 😭

shreya back! you're talking about new delhi?? sweetheart i'm melting in the heat my little brother fainted the other day and we had rush him for saline and my grandfather is admitted for heat stroke
"""India emits nearly 2.4 billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) a year based on data collected by the European Union – contributing about 7% of global emissions. The United States, by comparison, causes 13% of CO2 emissions, despite having a quarter of India’s population."""
taylor swift single handedly contributing 10k tonnes to that. one singular person. someone shank that bitch i dont see her performing in the heat while her fans die because it's so hot
shreya i missed you so much!
i’m so so so sorry about your little brother and grandfather. is he doing better, recovering, now that he has saline? is your grandfather stable? i’m so sorry the world governments and institutions have allowed climate change get to this point, and that you and your family and new delhi is paying for it. i am so sorry.
this is why its so fucking insane that swifties are defending her. your health and the health of billions (not just new delhi or india but the global south) is actively at risk because of this woman’s (and the entirety of the US) greed.
and the fact that’s refusing to perform in India despite her having an overwhelming amount of desi fans is racism sorry 🤷🏾‍♀️ her largest fanbase outside of white people are literally desi people and refusing to perform there…why? and now her fans are dying because of her greed. this is just horrifying.
please please please keep us updated. i’m so sorry you’re experiencing this deadly heat wave.
