Lost in Localization: Ritsu's Typing Quirks

when texting, Ritsu always use halfwidth punctuations (.) and (,) instead of the fullwidth ones (。) and (、) like how people who types in Japanese normally do.

here you can see how throughout the chat MC (and everyone else tbh) types their punctuations with fullwidth characters while Ritsu doesn't. this, of course, doesn't carry to the English localization because everything is written with halfwidth characters by default.

i'm pretty sure the reason for this choice is because how Ritsu types is also how attorneys in Japan write their legal documents. there's probably a proper explanation why those documents have to be written like that but this trivia is also just something that i vaguely remember learning from watching a random Detective Conan episode eons ago so pls don't quote me too much on this <(´>ω∂`)>

i just think it's neat how the writers actually cared about getting this detail right!

as someone who’s never liked timsteph i find it so funny that i just accidentally talked myself into a revrob au of them. revrob au where war games happens, steph (~15) gets captured & tortured, except this time tim (~16) comes in to try & help but due to [unforeseen circumstances] no one comes as backup, and they’re both tortured, leading to steph’s red hood era via being resurrected somehow by arthur brown and tim’s oracle era brought on via complications due to torture.

tim’s the one person steph won’t target, and steph’s the one person tim can’t really get angry with about killing, because they get it.

Thinking about it now, were I to rewrite Revelation to not kill Scarlet off, I'd probably just... remove her presence entirely from the main story after she joins?

Her purpose in Revelation's narrative is one of that route's weakest and strangely put together aspects of that route IMO.

Killing off an entire character to have an "I Never Said It Was Poison" moment to reveal Gunter's treachery is pretty overkill.

Were I to write it, I'd just have Corrin get ambushed like usual in Chapters 18 and 25, but never quite killed because Gunter is fighting back from the inside (Chapter 25 stars with him attempting to implicate Azura, which I think can kind of fit with that as well), with that eventually culminating in what he does in Chapter 26 to try and purge Anankos from his body.

Gunter being present and pushing the conversation on there being a traitor is meant to parallel Takumi's mind control subplot in Birthright, and Garon's general vibe of being violently paranoid in all of Fates. We don't need to kill Scarlet specifically to get this across.

To keep the reveal, you simply just have the party sans Corrin and Azura get attacked like normal, but when Gunter accuses those two of trying to kill everyone, have Corrin realize what's going on and then spin her own lie to catch him off guard and buy time for Azura to sing Lost in Thoughts, which pacifies normal people but has an exorcising effect on those being corrupted. Gunter starts to go crazy, similar to what Xander and Leo saw was happening to Garon in Chapter 14, before being forced to go mask off and reveal his treachery. Boom.

This change does many things.

-It calls back to the lie that was spread by Anankos through Garon that Corrin and Azura were intending to conquer/destroy Nohr and Hoshido, talked about since Chapter 8 or 9 iirc. Garon going crazy in chapter 14 already calls back to this, since you then realize that Anankos is trying to pin his own violent desires on Corrin and Azura, but is slowly losing it because those two are getting more and more successful at gaining allies. Once they're in his territory, he switches to Gunter as his primary proxy instead of Garon, keeping up the act and trying again to get the party to turn on each other rather than uniting.

-It incoporates Azura's song again in the plot, which itself runs the risk of "well, doesn't overuse of the song mean she'll die?" Which is true, but contextually, in Birthright she died because she sung too many times, while in Conquest it's implied that she died because the few times she sung it were more intense than usual, causing more strain.

In Revelation, she sings to pacify Xander and Ryoma in chapter 13, then again to Gunter after you beat him in chapter 26, and implied to again in the endgame. I think another part of the reason it hurts her is that she's singing it outside of Valla, though I don't know if that's confirmed. I think doing it one more time isn't too extreme.

-It just makes more sense because Azura's song is a constant no matter the route, while Scarlet's flower pin literally only exists for Gunter to be exposed. It's a very sloppy device, similar to Azura's crystal ball (which itself can just be reasonably replaced by her pendant which is explicitly magically imbued/oriented). Also, Gunter seeing the flower burn is how he was found out??? I know these are high powered fantasy soldiers, but that's a bit much.

-This is purely my own headcanon wishes for a reworked Fates, but because there's a big gameplay problem with players who use a Male Corrin being locked out of recruiting all the children unless paired with one of the Avatar-sexuals or a second gen unit, I'd like Scarlet and Flora to have expanded support pools to be paired with other men in the roster like a normal character, respective to their routes. I'd also include Reina because I'm based but IntSys are cowards and would never let older people be options for non-players because "they're undesirable" or some nonsense. But yeah, regardless I'd like to keep Scarlet alive in all routes, to correct this glaring gameplay oversight.

Anyway yeah. I also have this sneaking suspicion that IntSys also doesn't care for Scarlet's fate in Revelation, because that's a VERY obvious fallen variant for FEH, but they just haven't done that yet for whatever reason. The variants of Lilith and Anankos from Heirs of Fate were included already, like, that's some strange priorities for less popular characters.

Modern au:

When Dorian started dating Manon, he was able to see a few things in her that made him suspect something was off. At that point, he was able to see the pressure her grandmother put her under and he felt helpless in the face of that kind of thing.

Manon was really going out of her way to make sure everything is perfect and yet her grandmother kept scrutinizing her.

At formal events, he got to see that first hand. Manon would be super stressed, it would get worse about 2-3 days prior where her anxiety is at it’s peak; she won’t be able to sleep, and can’t keep anything down.

Dorian can see all of her effort and yet her grandmother’s responses are a variety of

“Don’t embarrass me,”

“What a disgrace,”

“This is worthless,”

And it really angers him.

But that was nothing compared to what he saw when they moved in together.

Prior to that, Manon was able to maintain her mask of aloofness and perfection. It was only when they lived together than Dorian saw how she struggles with insecurity and abandonment issues.

He learned of the long months she’d spend at boarding school, her grandmother wouldn’t allow her to return home if her grades are anything below a 100%. She’d call her an embarrassment and let her spend the holidays studying and making up for those grades.

He also saw how she struggles with boundaries sometimes. Moreover, he noticed that she instantly panics whenever she thinks that she made a mistake. Like forgetting her jacket on the counter, or leaving some of her work behind on the coffee table.

Dorian hates hates hates how her grandmother turned her into this person. She honestly believes that as soon as she commits the tiniest mistake, Dorian is going to leave and find someone better. He told her time and again that he doesn’t want anyone else, better or worse. He wants only her and nothing will ever change that.

But of course, his reassurance does nothing to elevate those issues that have been there for two decades. All he can is promise to always be there, that no matter what happens he isn’t going to leave or find someone else.

Now another issue is their families. They attend the same social circles and their families no each other. Chaol is against their relationship because he wants someone other than a Blackbeak to be with his friend. Aelin doesn’t care much, she tries to get along with Manon but the two of them don’t spend any time together to have any sort of relationship.

Then there are his parents; Georgina wants to pick her son’s lifelong partner. The fact that he’s with the Blackbeak heir infuriates her to no end.

Now normally he would ignore everyone and does as he pleases. However, now that he lives with Manon and knows exactly how vulnerable she is, he had a meeting with his parents and Chaol.

He sat them all down, and told them in no certain terms that if he brings Manon over for a visit, if any one of them make her feel unwanted, he’d get her out of there immediately and never return back there.

Dorian is serious, she’s been though enough and he sees how she struggles. That the perfectly put up woman is hiding a lot of things underneath and he hates how he can’t shoulder some of those things. All he can do is love her through it all and hope that one day it will be enough.
