I will elaborate on this but imagine MobBucky has to kidnap you for whatever reason, ransom, to send a message, insert your preference here and he has you tied up in some room of his house. It’s all fine until he hears the scraping of the chair moving against the floor so he, Steve and Sam go over to make sure you’re not trying to escape.
He the closer he gets, the louder the scraping is, he bursts through the door.
“You better not try to lea-what-what the hell are you doing-
You momentarily stop your scooting to look and him and then back at your destination, only to start all over again. You were so close, you didn’t care if your hands were bound, you’d find a way-
“What’s she doing in there” Steve questioned, seeing Bucky run an exasperated hand over his face.
“She’s trying to pet the cat”
“What?”
Bucky stared at you as you finally reached where his very white, very spoiled fur baby was perched. He was so sure she’d try and swat at you, at the very least hiss, after all, she was as picky and grumpy as her daddy-
“Merp” she hopped down to nuzzle against your leg, bumping her head against you with a happy purr. “Meow-
“Alright, that’s enough, Alpine get over here”
The sassy feline gave him a hard stare before reluctantly pulling away and sauntering over, batting his leg before trotting off. He was supposed to be the leader of his gang and meanwhile his hostage was trying to pet his cat who just scolded him after being told to leave.
“Well thanks for that” You gave him an annoyed huff, obnoxiously scooting back to where the chair originally was.
“Brat” Bucky mumbled his breath, biting back the smile that almost made its way to his face.
Almost.

Kidnapped
Lemme just give my baby boi Bucky all the headpats in the world
Summary: You get kidnapped and Bucky has to rescue you
Tumblr media
Your head hurts. Badly. And for once it's not because you drank too much the previous night. Lights begin to focus and the muted voices start to become clearer, unveiling the fact that you're currently tied to a chair and the deep cut on your forehead is currently dripping blood into your eyes.
"Look who's awake. About time." One of the masked people yanks your head upwards by your hair and you grunt at the sudden stab of pain.
"Missed me?" You grin, laughter punched out of your system when a fist strikes your stomach hard. Still, you manage to wheeze a laugh out, even as a fist strikes the back of your head hard, causing your vision to spin. "Missed you all too."
"Shut up and tell us where the Winter Soldier is!" The one whom you assume is their leader based on his mask's unique marking grabs your chin, lifting your head so that your gaze meets theirs.
"You want me to shut up or tell you where he is? You've gotta choose one —" You're flung to the side along with your chair, the floor slamming into your already injured side. Blood splatters onto the concrete floor from your coughing and you hear heavy footsteps stomping nearby.
Amateurs. They're terrible at extracting information and it's making you laugh at how pathetic they are. Unfortunately you can't enjoy the show as much as you'd like to because of all the pain you're in but at least there's some show to alleviate it. You focus on your breathing, centering yourself. You have to keep a clear mind, backup will be here soon so all you have to do is buy time. Even without your earpiece, you know that reinforcements will show up at some point. Hopefully before you actually die from your injuries.
You know that Bucky will come storming to your rescue. Probably.
It is rather ironic that your kidnappers only need to continue holding you hostage to find the person they're looking for instead of trying to beat his whereabouts out of you. The pain is getting rather annoying, especially considering how long your injuries will take to heal. This is going to put you out of commission for about a month, and the thought of being stuck in the house for a month is scaring you far more than your kidnappers could ever do.
The floor is rather cold, freezing to the touch really and you would like to not be in contact with the floor, but your kidnappers don't seem to share your sentiment since they keep squatting down to yell at you.
"It's better for your knees if you put my chair upright so you don't have to keep squatting down to talk to me. Also do keep your voice down, I'm not deaf you know." There are times where you curse your witty tongue, this is one of those times.
One moment you're on your side, lying on the floor. The next moment you're sent flying into a wall, the chair nothing but splinters in a pile underneath you. Fingers dig into the soft flesh of your throat, squeezing the air out of your lungs. You kick the air, struggling instinctively and dig your fingernails into the arm as hard as you can. which is not very hard considering how much air and blood you're losing. Black spots begin to crowd your vision and you're about to send an apology to your boyfriend for being the sassy idiot that you are when suddenly your body collapses to the floor, lungs heaving as they gulp down as much oxygen as they possibly can.
Coughing, you massage your throat. The bruises are going to be ugly, and Bucky is probably going to explode upon seeing your injuries. You would feel bad for your kidnappers if it wasn't for the fact that they nearly killed you and ruined your nice little record of not getting kidnapped.
"I will not ask again. Where is the Winter Soldier?" The leader roars, slamming you against the wall.
"You know, it's a bit hard to talk when it's kinda hard to breathe." You hit his arm. "Also, I believe he's right behind you."
A loud thud echoes in the now empty room as a metal fist collides with flesh and the leader crumples to the floor at the feet of a furious super soldier. You lean against the wall, panting as you push your hair out of your eyes, wincing when you accidentally touch the wound on your forehead.
"Took you…long enough." You huff, looking up at Bucky.
"Maybe I wouldn't have to do this if you didn't get captured." He scowls, kicking the leader's now unconscious body.
"Try intentionally walking into an ambush by yourself and let me know if you get out alive." You grit your teeth, using the wall to stand up despite all the ringing in your ears and the blurriness in your vision. Your head is starting to hurt worse, and all the blood you're spilling onto the floor probably isn't helping either.
"Well, you're alive right now aren't you?" Bucky scoops you up. "So don't go dying on me or I'll have to clean up your messes too."
"Don't recall having too many messes for you to clean," you tiredly mumble into his chest. Your eyelids feel heavy, black starting to cloud your vision and you want nothing more than to close your eyes and sleep forever but Bucky keeps jostling you, snapping you awake with every step he takes. "You make a terrible groom, can't even carry your bride properly."
"My bride needs to stay awake or they'll die." He frowns, purposely shaking you. "I mean it."
"Try not to sound like you actually care about me or I might start believing it."
Bucky simply grunts, definitely out of annoyance and continues the way too long walk out of the building, jostling you all the way. Your fingers clutch at his shirt tightly as you take in the sights before you, realising that Bucky had single-handedly fought his way in just to get to you.
"Can't believe you didn't invite me for this party. Seemed fun." You groan.
"Wasn't so fun knowing the only person I can tolerate on missions could die before I reached them." He murmurs, worry sparking in his ice blue eyes.
"Tolerate? Pretty sure I make for better company than that." You weakly poke him in the shoulder, giving him a glare that doesn't quite reach your eyes.
"Dream on, doll." The sound of a jet landing drowns out the rest of his words and he carries you inside, laying you out on a stretcher so that the doctor can tend to your wounds. You give him the finger as he turns to leave and he throws one back over his shoulder.
"Don't miss me too much while I'm gone, doll." With that, he disappears into the cockpit and leaves you with the doctor.
"As if I'd miss that bastard," you mutter to yourself, finally closing your eyes and drift off to sleep, ignoring the way your heart clenches at the thought of Bucky fighting his way through the base just to rescue you.
When you wake, you're back somewhere in Avengers Tower, bandages decorating your head and chest. You partially recall this place being the medbay, and judging from the look on Bruce's face your wounds aren't that bad, at least not now.
"Hey," you croak.
"Welcome back," Bruce smiles. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I got slammed into a wall multiple times."
"That's not far off. You'll be back in the field in give or take one month, don't worry." He hands you a glass of water which you accept gratefully.
"Where's Bucky?" The question slips out before you can stop yourself.
"Missed me that much, doll?" Speak of the devil and he shall appear. The brunette walks in with the largest smirk you've seem him make, automatic door sliding close behind him.
"Was asking so I could avoid seeing your ugly mug so soon." You bury yourself back underneath the blanket, ensuring that the fabric covered your face.
"How unfortunate that I chose to walk in now." He takes a seat next to your bed, quietly signalling to Bruce for time alone with you. Bruce nods, slipping out of the room and Bucky lets out a sigh. "Doll?"
You make not a single peep, not even when Bucky pokes you through the blanket so he takes matters into his own hands and yanks the blanket off you. You yelp, hands scrambling to pull the blanket back but the super solider is faster and tosses the blanket onto the table behind him before folding his arms over his chest.
"What?" You scowl, mimicking his actions.
"I didn't know your idiocy had no limits." His brows furrow. "What were you thinking, springing that trap with no escape plan? Were you looking to die?"
"If I was, it was a very unsuccessful attempt." You roll your eyes, turning over so that your back faces him.
"Be honest with me." He turns you over, grip softening when he realises how much he's hurting you but he doesn't let go.
"I wasn't trying to die, okay? But if I did, well…" You look away, hating at how your chest constricts when you see the pain in his eyes. "Would've been fine."
"It wouldn't have been!" He snaps. "It's not fine if you just go off and die!"
"Right," you mutter, playing with the sheets. Tears are beginning to form in the corners of your eyes, and you refuse to let him see your weakness. Biting down hard on your bottom lip, you try to push your emotions down before they can overwhelm you but the tears keep coming anyways. Dammit.
"Doll I —" He takes a deep breath. "I don't want to see you to die, alright? Or at least I don't want to see you die before me."
You lie there in silence, tears still streaming down your face and staining the pillow beneath. Fist clenching, you stifle a sob. Shit, you really don't want to crumble in front of Bucky of all people.
"You…matter. A lot. To me." Bucky forces the words out, but his gaze is soft, and so is his touch. His fingertips gently press against your skin, little spots of warmth amidst the sudden chill that has set in. "So don't go dying on me, alright?"
"Only if you make the same promise." You mumble and his eyes brighten. Giving you a genuine smile, he leans in to press a kiss to your forehead.
"Deal. Now get all the rest you need, I'll always be here."
"If you're expecting a 'thank you', I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed." You give his cheek a poke.
"You're welcome." He grins, ruffling your hair. He grabs the blanket, tucking you in with it. "Heal up, or I'll have to go on missions by myself and that would be boring."
"Well, can't have a bored super soldier now, can we?" You smile back at him, grabbing his hand. "Hold on."
He huffs in annoyance, but his eyes say otherwise. "Won't be letting go any time soon, doll."

Grumpy!CEO!Bucky misses his Lemon, especially after all of these years. Of course, that’s what makes his new PA so special— she’s the same girl who ran a lemonade stand with him when they were kids, she’s his lemon. She’s sweet, and it’s incredibly obvious that his lemon makes him feel less sour. His change in disposition is refreshing for everyone around him, too.
I feel like this is similar to Grumpy x Sunshine. Like maybe he’s sour around everyone, but her. His mood changes when she’s around and lightens up everything when she walks in the room🩵

Game Night
Paring: Avenger! Bucky Barnes x Avenger! Fem! Reader (Grumpy x Sunshine)
Tumblr media
Summary: Steve’s mandatory game night takes a turn when you and Bucky are paired up.
Word Count: Roughly 1.4k
Warnings: Fluff, banter, friendly competition, implied threats, destroying property (Bucky and Sam), romantic tension everyone can feel, and some overprotective Bucky because that man does not play about his sunshine.
Author’s Note: Sorry for the delay; I was helping my friend with a research project. Ugh, it feels choppy, but I hope this is to your liking, babes ;)

The living room buzzed with energy as the Avengers tried to recover from the chaos of their most recent mission; the munching of chips and clinking of drinks in glasses filled the space.
Peter and you were talking animatedly about the mission, with Peter recounting how he flipped mid-air, webbing a bad guy to a nearby wall.
“I mean, I swear, the guy didn’t see it coming. I was way higher up than I thought, and then BAM!” Peter dramatically mimicked the motion with his arms, sending you into fits of laughter.
“It’s honestly kind of unfair that you can just flip your way out of everything, Pete,” you teased, elbowing him.
He shrugged, all smugness. “I mean, someone’s gotta make the web-swinging look good, right?”
Before you could reply, Steve stood up from his spot, clapping his hands for attention. “Alright, team! Time for some mandatory bonding!”
A chorus of groans erupted from the group, each one from someone hoping to escape Steve’s relentless enthusiasm for ‘team-building’ nights.
“Tonight is Charades.” Steve declared.
That’s when Steve decided to assign the partners. He glanced around the room with a twinkle in his eye and paired you with Bucky, clearly anticipating the fun to come.
You gave Bucky your signature puppy dog eyes, and he looked away with a scowl as he crossed his arms over his chest, not wanting to give in and show that he was happy to be partnered with you.
“Oh, great,” Bucky muttered, rolling his eyes. “This is gonna be a disaster.”
You didn’t let his grumpiness throw you off. “Bucky, come on!” you said, plopping beside him on the couch. “We’ve got this! We’re unstoppable!”
Bucky raised an eyebrow and shot you a skeptical look. “Sure, sure. We’ll see about that.”
He didn’t seem convinced, and as Sam overheard, he couldn’t resist adding his two cents.
"Oh, this is gonna be easy," Sam declared loudly, rolling his eyes. "Grumpy Barnes can’t even smile, let alone act."
"You’re gonna regret that," Bucky shot back, his tone thick with warning.
His words weren’t loud, but they were laced with enough warning that Sam quickly leaned back into his seat, hands raised in mock surrender.
"Okay, okay, I get it," Sam laughed, but you caught the wariness in his eyes. "But not holding my breath, this will be easy."
Then, leaning in toward you, he whispered, “If we lose to that clown, I’m never letting it go.”
You gave him an exaggerated look of disbelief, pretending to be shocked. "Who knew you cared so much about winning?"
Bucky’s lips quirked into the faintest smirk. "Don’t mess this up," he teased.
You winked at him. “You’re with me. How could we lose?”
As the game started, it quickly became clear that Bucky treated charades less like a fun group activity and more like a tactical mission. His intense focus was almost comical, but you fell into an unspoken rhythm.
When it was your turn to act, Bucky’s sharp eyes locked onto you, and after a few gestures, he almost always guessed your clues. When it was his turn, he leaned into the ridiculousness of it all, whether miming a gorilla or pretending to be a ballerina, just to keep your laughter ringing through the room.
By the end of the game, the scoreboard showed a landslide victory in your favor. Bucky allowed himself a small, smug grin as you squealed in delight and launched yourself into his arms, wrapping your legs around his waist.
“We’re the dream team!” you exclaimed, giggling as you clung to him.
“Yeah, yeah,” he replied, though his grip on you was secure, his metal arm effortlessly supporting you. “Don’t let it go to your head.”
Much to everyone's amusement, he carried you back to the couch, where he promptly plopped you into his lap. “You’re comfy,” you declared with a grin, making yourself home.
Sam, clearly displeased, waved a hand in your direction. “This has to be rigged. There’s no way those two didn’t cheat.”
Natasha snorted, leaning back in her chair. “They didn’t cheat, Wilson. They’re just disgustingly in sync.”
Sam grabbed a pillow and chucked it at you. “Sync this!”
The pillow hit you square in the face, and you burst out laughing, holding it in your lap. “It’s just a pillow!”
But Bucky didn’t see it that way. His gaze turned sharp as he caught the second pillow Sam threw mid-air. “If you throw another one at her...”
Sam, of course, took that as a challenge. “What are you gonna do, Barnes?” he quipped, hurling another pillow that you easily dodged.
Bucky’s eyes narrowed. “I’ll give you a five-second head start.”
Sam’s smirk faltered. “Wait, what?”
Without a word, Bucky carefully brushed your hair out of your face, placed you gently on the couch, and stood up. The room went silent as he walked purposefully toward the hallway.
“What’s he doing?” you asked, looking to Steve for answers.
Steve sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose, hiding a smile. “He’s going to smash Redwing.”
Sam’s eyes widened in panic.
“Barnes, you touch Redwing, I swear-” He bolted after Bucky, and the two disappeared down the hall.
Moments later, a loud crash echoed through the compound, followed by Sam’s yelling and Bucky’s retorts.
Natasha chuckled, shaking her head as she leaned back on the couch. “This happens all the time.”
You glanced between her and Steve, bewildered. “Doesn’t anyone stop them?”
Steve shrugged. “Nope. They’ll tire themselves out eventually.”
From a distance, the team could hear the muffled sounds of Bucky and Sam bickering echoing through the compound.
“Touch Redwing, and you’re paying for a whole new one!” Sam’s voice was laced with fear.
“Oh, don’t worry, Wilson,” Bucky shot back, his tone mockingly calm. “I’ll make sure to recycle the pieces. I hear it’s good for the environment.”
A loud thud followed as if Bucky had knocked something over or thrown something against the wall.
“Man, what is your problem?” Sam hollered. “You act like I threw a brick at her!”
“You hit her in the face!” Bucky retorted.
“It was a pillow!” Sam defended himself. “It probably felt like a marshmallow.”
“Doesn’t matter,” Bucky countered. “You don’t throw things at her. Ever.”
Back in the living room, you stifled a laugh as Natasha shook her head in amused disbelief. “It’s always like this,” she said, smirking. “I don’t know why Sam keeps testing him.”
Steve folded his arms, looking like the exasperated dad of the group. “Because Sam likes pushing buttons. And Bucky…well, Bucky only has so much patience.”
Another crash echoed from down the hallway, followed by Sam’s yell. “Oh, come on! That wasn’t even Redwing! That was my lamp!”
“You’ve got terrible taste in decor, Wilson,” Bucky said, completely unfazed.
“YOU OWE ME A NEW LAMP!” Sam shouted.
“I did you a favor.” Bucky said dryly. “So say ‘thank you,’ it's polite.”
You couldn’t hold back your giggles any longer. “Should we...I don’t know, step in?” you asked, looking at Steve.
Steve shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. “Nah. Let them hash it out. Bucky’s not actually going to break Redwing. Probably.”
“Probably?” Natasha echoed. “You’re really putting a lot of faith in him.”
From the hallway, Sam yelled again. “THAT’S IT, BARNES. YOU AND ME. SPARRING MATCH TOMORROW.”
“Fine,” Bucky fired back. “But don’t be mad when I wipe the floor with you, bird brain.”
Natasha leaned over to you, her voice low. “You know he’s only this protective because it’s you, right? He doesn’t care this much when we get hit with stuff.”
You blushed, glancing down at your hands. “He’s just…looking out for me. Like a guardian.”
Natasha snorted. “Yeah, sure. Keep telling yourself that, sweetheart.”
Steve smiled knowingly but didn’t say anything.
The sounds of Sam and Bucky’s argument gradually faded as they came back.
Sam was glaring, his hair disheveled, and he muttered under his breath about never forgiving Bucky.
Bucky, on the other hand, was smug, like he had just won a personal victory.
Sam threw himself back down on the couch, muttering something about "not talking to Barnes for the rest of the week," to which Bucky gave a half-hearted shrug.
He sat down beside you, his arm casually draped across the back of the couch. His eyes flicked down to you, and without a word, he reached out to brush his knuckles lightly over your knee.
“You okay, sunshine?” he asked quietly, only for you to hear.
You smiled. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
Bucky’s lips quirked upward, just slightly. “Good,” he said softly. “No one messes with you. Not even Sam.”
The others shared amused looks, but neither of you paid them any mind. Bucky’s protective side made your heart flutter in a way you didn’t quite understand, and you sank further into the couch, curling into his side.

make-believe girlfriend J.B.
Tumblr media
pairing: bucky barnes x f!reader, a smidge of grumpy x sunshine
wc: 3.1k
warnings: use of nickname 'peaches.' long distance relationship
summary: after a three month long mission, bucky returns and he has a girlfriend. the team doesn't believe she exists
a/n: i loooooveeee this i hope u do too ! <3
⋆˚✶˚‧⋆。˚
it was supposed to be a simple mission followed by a month long sabbatical. three months steve told bucky in between sets in the training room. two months to finish the mission, one month to just… explore. you need to get out, discover, to just- i don’t know… do something else besides be a soldier.
bucky had laughed at first. “coming from you? the world’s best soldier? that’s rich.”
“i know i’m not one to talk. but i care about you, buck. wakanda was good for you, i just want you to be at peace again.”
bucky hummed. “i’ll think about it.”
steve nodded, then after a beat, added “if not for you, do it for me.”
that was two weeks ago. now, bucky can’t even believe he’s packing his bags and loading onto the quinjet. alone. for the first time in almost 70 years, he’s afraid of something. of what, he doesn’t know. that’s what’s so nerve wracking about the entire ordeal – with hydra, he’d always known who to fear, who to submit to. when he was fighting on the field, there was always a bad guy, an alien, a man with a scepter. but this was out of his experience.
footsteps sound behind him. dropping his duffel bag by his backpack, bucky turns around calmly, trying to read steve’s face.
“you can call every once in awhile… if you want to. or just- you know. don’t forget your check ins.”
bucky nods. “it’s just a couple months, steve. i’ll be fine.”
he laughs a little. “i know. i don’t want you to think i’m pushing you to get out.”
“i know you’re not.” a hesitant smile spreads on his face. steve can see right through it, but he doesn’t comment, merely offering a hug. he pats bucky on the back as they always do, and once again, bucky is alone on the quinjet.
it was scary at first. chicago is so different from his little corner in brooklyn, safe in a bubble of familiarity. his apartment came pre-furnished, and felt more home-like than his bare apartment in new york. it was easy to play along, to act like he was playing a part on a mission.
but then he met you.
the walls of his facade started to crumble, and he found himself seeping into the soft sheets of his bed instead of a thin blanket on the hardwood floor. it became harder and harder for him to convince himself that he was faking the enjoyment of this trip.
you worked at the cafe nearby his apartment. his neighbor came home one day as bucky was leaving, and the smell of her coffee coupled with the croissant in her other hand was enough encouragement he needed to try out the restaurant.
the bell at the front alerted you of a new customer. you smiled while frothing some milk for an order, “i’ll be right with you!” you chirped sweetly.
the way you moved behind the counter had bucky in a trance the first time he laid eyes on you. the atmosphere around you was bubbling; it was as if bucky had walked right into a room of sunshine, and you were the star, beautiful and gentle and sweet. he wanted more.
dusting your hands on your apron, you stepped towards the register. “what can i get for you?”
a pause. worry was etched on bucky’s face.
“have you been here before?”
he shook his head. “i don’t know what to get, i’m sorry.”
you smiled again, soft and reassuring. it melted his insides. “that’s okay. would you like any suggestions?”
he finally grew the courage to look at your eyes. his mouth went a little dry, lips parted in shock. you were just so beautiful. he couldn’t describe it. “yeah.”
another comforting smile spread across your face and it soothed him immediately.
“i think our latte macchiato is one our yummiest drinks. i usually get the peach cobbler croissant. it’s amazing when it’s warm and gooey.”
“peach cobbler croissant?”
you nodded, “house original. don’t knock it ‘till you try it,” another smile.
this time, he smiled back. “okay, i’ll have those, then.”
“great!” you finished registering his order before moving back towards the various coffee machines, lightly singing along to the music playing. a few more people trickle in and out, and bucky takes his time admiring the quaint cafe.
“hey,” you lightly call. “i never got a name for that order.” you hold a cup of coffee in one hand, a sharpie in the other.
bucky steps closer to the counter, a sudden surge of confidence rippling through him like it used to back in the 30s. “can i give you a number for it too?”
your eyebrows shoot up in surprise. with a shy nod, you place his cup on the counter and take out a notepad from your apron. he recites his phone number and, with a grateful smile, leaves the shop. his legs almost give out as soon as he steps outside. he’s never been so nervous around a girl before.
he finished his mission two weeks earlier than planned. that gave him a month and a half to do whatever he wanted in the city. what he really wanted was you. every morning, he’d try a new drink and whatever breakfast special you had that day. and every day, at the end of your shift, bucky would walk you home. or sometimes, you’d walk to the park and sit on the bench and just talk.
by the second week of this, bucky asked you out on that bench.
⋆˚✶˚‧⋆。˚
stepping into bucky’s apartment, you place your keys in the bowl by the front door, and drop your apron next to your shoes. bucky lounges on the couch, a book in his lap and the tv on low.
“peaches?” he closes his book. “why didn’t you call me? i would’ve come to get you.”
you hum, sliding onto the couch beside him. “didn’t wanna bother you.”
he tsks at you before kissing your forehead, pulling you into his side. “how was work?”
you shrug. “i saw the cutest dog. i gave her some whipped cream and it was so cute.”
he smiles, squeezing you close. “wanna watch tv and order in?”
you nod, shuffling to grab the remote and putting your feet in his lap. “wanna watch gilmore girls?”
he massages your sock-clad feet and hums in approval at your question.
it’s odd how quickly he let go of his life at home. something about you made him want to be everything he thought he could be before the war, before hydra, before everything. he does miss home – new york city, the avengers compound, his clanky washing machine, steve and yes, even sam. but the longer he spends here, the more his home starts to feel like you.
“i think i love you.” the words slip out before he can register them, and his hands freeze in the middle of massaging you. you turn your head slowly, eyes softening upon hearing his words. “i’m sorry, it’s way too soon to say that i don’t even know why i-”
“i love you too.” you cut in. “i think i’m falling in love with you, bucky barnes.”
his eyes well up and he tugs you closer. “really?”
you nod, a grin breaking out on your face. “really.”
seeing your smile makes him start to smile too. “i’m falling in love with you, too.”
when he kisses you, it’s tender and caring, and his hand cups your face gently. he tastes faintly of apricot jam, and you sigh into the kiss, tugging him closer. “i don’t want you to go.”
he rests his forehead against yours, frowning. “aww, peaches.” bucky places a feather-light kiss to your cheek. “i’ll miss you so much.”
you nod in acknowledgement. “don’t know what i’m gonna do without you here.”
“i’ll visit as much as i can, honey.”
you huff, sniffing just below his jaw, inhaling his scent. “i know,” you pout. “but i really love being around you.”
bucky can’t help his smile from forming. you’re just so cute, missing him already when he hasn’t even left yet.
“good thing i have two weeks left to spend as much time with my girl as possible.”
his fingers slip down to your waist, pressing into your sides. laughter bubbles from your throat as you try to pry him off you. bucky chuckles at you, the adorable giggles spewing from your mouth are enough to make him kiss you again.
“you’re so pretty, peaches.”
you huff, out of breath from the tickling. “yeah?” it’s your turn. “you think so?”
“what are you doing…”
“…nothing…”
“peach- hey!”
you attack his freakishly hard abdomen, squeezing the muscles with all your might until bucky pulls you up and plops you into his lap, laying back on the couch. satisfied, you rest your hands against his chest.
“i wonder what stevie’ll think of you.”
your brow quirks. “you mean… captain america?”
bucky laughs, “that’s not his real name.”
you slap his chest lightly. “i know that, silly.”
“don’t know how i got so lucky.” his eyes twinkle at you.
lacing your fingers with his, you give his hand a squeeze. “me too.”
⋆˚✶˚‧⋆。˚
bucky skillfully lands the quinjet on the helicopter pad at the compound. after showing you all the cool gadgets on the plane, bucky was reluctant to leave your side, but you kissed him and promised to facetime as soon as he was settled in, and bucky couldn’t say no to that, so he kissed you goodbye and waved as he took off, never having been so sad to return to his home in new york.
strolling into the compound, his backpack dangles from his right shoulder as he holds his duffel bag in his metal hand. he makes his way to his room, passing wanda and vision in the kitchen who say ‘hello’ while making some sokovian dish.
while he unpacks, steve knocks on his door despite bucky leaving it open.
“hey, buck. how was it?”
closing his dresser drawer, bucky shifts towards steve who steps into the room.
“it was good. i think… you were right. i really needed that.”
“that’s awesome, man. i’m really happy for you. maybe we can talk about it tonight, have some beers and just catch up?”
bucky nods, already grinning to himself when he thinks about telling steve about you.
he showers, facetimes you for a good hour, before friday alerts him that dinner is ready. he finishes his call with you and heads towards the kitchen, finding sam and steve spread on a table with food. natasha and wanda have taken their plates to the tv, opting to watch a new episode of some show. peter and tony are too caught up in some math problem to leave the couch.
“what’s up, terminator?”
squinting at him, bucky grabs a beer and pops it open with his metal arm, taking a seat beside steve at the round table. “so,” steve talks in between mouthfuls of food. “tell us about the trip.”
taking a gulp of beer, bucky bites the inside of his cheek. “i… met a girl.”
silence overtakes the three of them.
“what?”
“really?”
bucky nods, a blush already heating up his face.
“so… are you dating?” steve put his fork down to really look at bucky, still shocked at the sudden news. his friend nods in response.
“wow.” sam leans back in his chair. “i don’t believe it.”
“what?” it’s bucky’s turn to be shocked, eyebrows furrowing at sam’s confession. “what do you mean you don’t believe it?”
“you go on a three month long trip and suddenly you have a girlfriend for the first time in 70 years? no way.”
“sam, be nice.”
“i am being nice.” he loads up his fork for another bite. “i’m just saying i’ll believe it when i meet her.”
“well, she lives in chicago, bird-brain.”
“who lives in chicago?” natasha suddenly appears in front of them, an empty glass in her hand, presumably here to refill it.
“bucky’s girlfriend.”
“sam!” steve slaps his shoulder
natasha’s mouth drops open. “you got a girlfriend?!”
bucky’s mouth forms into a disapproving line. “yeah, and sam doesn’t believe she exists.”
she laughs at this, beckoning over wanda and tony.
bucky wants to hide in his room at the sudden amount of people staring at him.
“i’m with sam on this one.”
“really tony?” steve’s tone is teasing but he can’t help but feel bad for bucky. “you too?”
“i’ll believe it when i see it.”
“whatever.” bucky mumbles, his plate empty and beer gone. “you guys don’t have to believe me.”
“okay, buddy.” sam laughs. “good luck keeping up the act.”
⋆˚✶˚‧⋆。˚
it’s been five months since bucky was first in chicago, and the team is nowhere near closer to believing in his relationship with you. they’ve walked in on him on the phone, smiling down at his text messages, him on call with you, even him calling a local flower shop in chicago to send you flowers. still, only steve believes you exist, but even he is starting to grow wary. somehow, bucky hasn’t shown any photographs of you, no letters, not even a video call to prove your existence.
“i don’t know what else to do, peaches.” bucky pouts into the phone. on the other end, you laugh softly.
“they still don’t believe you?”
“sam thought i was texting myself today. myself! i told him i don’t even know how to do that! when i tried to show him photo of you, he said it doesn’t count unless i’m in the photo with you. then he said something about shop photo.”
“... do you mean photoshop?”
“yes! that!”
you giggle at him again.
“this isn’t funny, peaches.”
“sounds awfully funny to me.” you can’t help but tease him. “why can’t you just put them on the phone?”
“they think i’m just gonna hire someone to pretend to be my girlfriend.”
you don’t respond for a second, merely humming. “i’m sure we’ll think of something.”
the conversation changes and after a few minutes, clint comes by to get bucky for training.
“hey, you’re late for training. steve is already downstairs waiting.”
“oh crap,” he pulls his phone closer to his ear. “i’m sorry, peaches. i gotta go. i love you.”
he hangs up after a moment and then moves to grab his gym bag.
“that your pretend girlfriend?” clint points to the phone.
bucky rolls his eyes. “not you, too.”
he raises his arms in defense. “sam has a good point.”
the two of them walk down the hall. “i don’t think he makes a good point.” he grumbles. clint laughs at him, entering the gym where nat and steve are sparring.
“he’s here.” sam calls out, alerting steve. “what were you doing? calling your fake girlfriend?”
“she’s not fake.”
“your make-believe girlfriend.”
“alright, sam,” steve interjects. “let’s just get started.”
by the time training ends, bucky just wants to cuddle on the couch with you and fall asleep. but you’re not here, and you haven’t texted him back since your phone call earlier. so, he’s stuck lounging on the couch, freshly showered, watching movies with the rest of the team for some “bonding” that steve insisted on.
“why wouldn’t they just exchange numbers if they clearly like each other?”
“because,” wanda turns to bruce. “she wants fate to bring them together.”
“fate is not a five dollar bill. fate already brought them together! they’re just denying it.”
before anyone else responds, friday alerts them of someone’s arrival.
“friday, who is it?” tony calls out.
“she is not in the stark catalog or the shield workforce database, sir.” she responds.
“how did she get in here, then?”
“miss potts approved of her.”
they all exchange glances until the elevator doors slide open and in it, you with your overnight bag.
stepping towards the group, you shyly call out. “bucky?”
he whips his head around, standing immediately. “peaches?”
a smile blooms across your face, dropping your bags to engulf him in a hug. he’s never hugged anyone so hard.
“what are you doing here?” he kisses the top of your head.
“i wanted to surprise you.” you speak quietly so only he can hear. “and i wanted to prove my existence” you giggle.
“who the fuck is that?”
“language.”
sam looks annoyingly at steve before focusing back on you two.
“sam…” natasha looks disappointed for him. “i think that’s bucky’s girlfriend.”
his jaw drops. “no way.” he scoffs. “no way she actually exists.”
“yeah, what?” tony looks around in shock. “and she just waltzes in here??”
you chuckle at the group of supers. “i thought you said they were smart.”
bucky laughs at your comment. “sometimes they are.”
“so you’re actually his girlfriend?” wanda studies you. “how did you meet?”
“bucky came to the cafe i work at.” you smile fondly at the memory. “we make the best peach cobbler croissants. i brought the recipe for you all to try.”
a few ears perk up at this.
“what’s bucky’s middle name?” sam quizzes. “if you’re really his girlfriend.”
bucky wants to slap his forehead.
“uhm… pretty sure bucky is his middle name.” you laugh out.
“oh.”
“that was a stupid question, sam.”
“i forgot!” he waves his hands around to dismiss what just happened. “what’s my middle name??”
“aren’t you supposed to be quizzing her about bucky?”
“not the point, peter.”
“you shouldn’t even be quizzing her.” bucky wraps his arm around your waist, pulling you into his side. “everyone, this is y/n. my girlfriend. my real girlfriend.”
the sight of affection from bucky causes a silence to settle over the group, as if that was the definitive determining factor in this whole ordeal.
“y/n, this is the team.”
you smile, waving at them.
“that’s steve.”
bucky points him out and steve immediately stands up, offering a hand. “it’s nice to finally meet you.”
you smile in response, the same soft one that had bucky falling for you in the first place.
“he’s the only one who actually believes you exist.” bucky whispers lowly into your ear, and the feel of his facial hair tickles you. “maybe we can all hang out later.” bucky announces, pulling you along towards the hallway to his room.
he shuts the door behind you, pulling you into his arms. “i can’t believe you’re here.”
you tug at his henley, dog tags clinking as you pull him closer, wanting to kiss him after being void of it for so long. “kiss me already, barnes.”
and kiss you, he does.

Waiting in line at your favorite coffee shop is always worth it and today, after a restless night, you really need the extra boost. Even though you’re behind schedule the stop is a necessity and despite the busy morning rush the line is moving quickly but apparently not fast enough for the person behind you who lets out a loud and frustrated huff.
Trying to be discrete you turn and look out of the corner of your eye.
The sight of him strikes you in a way you’re not prepared for.
Then the barista calls your name. You blink, dazed but thankfully able to recover well enough to give the barista a warm smile and thanks.
As you grab your napkins and gather your things you can’t help but steal glances at the man. He’s tall and broad shouldered, wearing a leather jacket that shows his biceps shaping the fabric, his long legs are clad in well fitted dark denim, and he’s the perfect mix of masculinity and male beauty.
His brooding expression doesn’t falter as he retrieves his drink order, but he does say ‘thank you’ and to your continued surprise, ‘excuse me,’ to whomever he passes.
With one last longing glance you head for the door, walking out into the sunshine and crossing the street to your favorite bench to enjoy your coffee before work.
You’re focused on your phone while you sip slowly so at first you don’t notice the dark shadow looming over you. But the rumbly and gruff voice startles you.
“You’re in my seat.”
You look up, shielding your eyes from the sun to see nothing more than a large shadow.
“What?” you ask, feeling discombobulated.
The shadow shifts and your eyes widen when you see the man from the coffee shop, his glower ferocious despite your now big smile.
“This is your seat?...It’s a whole bench.”
“Yeah…well.”
You look at the open space next to you and offer out a hand. “There’s more than enough room for both of us.”
His eyes narrow but he sits.
“I’ve never seen you here before,” you say brightly.
“I’m here almost every day,” he answers.
You keep your smile in place.
“Well, I’m running late so that must be why I haven’t seen you before.”
“Then why are you sitting on this bench talking to me?” he asks.
You bristle inwardly but your smile doesn’t falter.
“I still have time. I usually get in early, so it won’t be a problem.”
He stares at you, the breeze catching his scent and blowing it your way.
You try not to inhale, focusing on the fact that he’s super grumpy instead of the fact that he’s super hot and smells really good.
“I enjoy sitting out in the sunshine. It helps me feel grounded before I really start the day.”
The words tumble out unprompted but under his narrowed gaze you find yourself feeling less confident than usual.
He just “hmphs” in response and looks away, taking a sip of his drink.
“You say you sit here every day so what’s with all the…” and you motion to him, “grumpy? Is the sunshine not good enough for you?”
He turns your way again, lips pressed together but his eyes flaring with surprise. Before he can respond his phone rings. He looks at the screen with another mild puff of air then swipes his thumb over it.
“Wilson,” he says gruffly.
His voice drops low, and you look down at your phone, trying not to listen. Most of the conversation on his part is a series of grunts and mumbled responses so it’s hard to follow anyway.
After hanging up he stands abruptly and looks down at you, his gaze lingering before he gives you a barely perceptible nod of acknowledgement and starts to walk off.
You yell after him, “I hope you find some sunshine!”
He doesn’t turn around but you’re sure you see his steps falter for just a second.
It’s only after you finish your drink that you stand and start the short walk to work, surprised to catch sight of the grumpy stranger across the street at the local VA, squatting down in front of an older man with a dog.
The grumpiness is gone, replaced by a warm smile that crinkles his eyes. All the air goes out of your lungs.
He looks up at that moment, noticing you stopped in the middle of the sidewalk across the street. His smile fades and you drop your head, speed walking away.
Tumblr media
It’s Saturday morning and you’re standing outside the bakery, texting your friend to get their donut order. The door opens and you barely have time to register the whiff of familiar scent that floats by you when you look up and lock eyes with Mr. Grumpy himself.
You smile in greeting.
“You,” he answers.
Your grin widens. “Me. What are the chances? Your favorite bench stealer!”
He sighs heavily and glances back at the door to the bakery before pinning you with his stare again.
Now that the sun isn’t shining in your eyes you have a better chance to see the color of his. They’re blue. A gorgeous ocean colored blue framed by long, dark, and thick lashes.
His attention strays down your body and you feel tingles everywhere his eyes touch.
“Here for something sweet?” you ask.
He never gets the chance to answer because a man comes up behind him and grabs his shoulder, giving him a slight shove to move in front and say hi.
“Barnes! Aren’t you going to introduce me to your beautiful friend here?”
You smile warmly.
“Sam. Sam Wilson,” the friend says in introduction.
“Hi Sam!” you greet and give him your name.
“Barnes didn’t tell me he made a new friend,” Sam says.
“Barnes?” you repeat.
You direct your question to Mr. Grumpy whose been standing there silently murdering Sam with his eyes since he appeared.
Sam smiles triumphantly. “This here is James, but his friends call him Bucky.”
“Hi Bucky. Nice to officially meet you!”
Your tone is light and airy, and you wave.
“Hey,” Bucky answers, then turns to Sam. “Let’s go, the guys are looking forward to these donuts.”
“Is he always this grumpy?” you ask Sam.
Silence falls between you all, but it only lasts a moment, broken then by Sam’s loud cackle.
“Oh, I like her already!” Sam says.
Ignoring your comment-and Sam’s-Bucky repeats, “let’s go Wilson!”
Sam returns the favor, ignoring Bucky and focusing on you. “You should come down and visit us at the VA sometime. He’s never grumpy around the guys.”
“So just me then?” you ask with a laugh.
“That’s just because he thinks you’re beautiful,” Sam winks.
You steal a glance at Bucky and note the slight pink color that paints his cheeks.
“It was nice meeting you Sam. And you too Bucky.”
With those last words and a smile, you skirt past them and walk into the bakery. After placing your order you’re shocked to find Bucky standing at the pickup counter, hands in his pockets and shuffling on his feet.
“Miss me already?” you tease.
He doesn’t answer and instead hands you a business card. You take it and look down, reading the information for the VA and Bucky’s name.
“Thanks,” you say, meeting his eyes again and noting the pink still coating his cheeks.
He doesn’t answer but you think you see his lips lift into what might be a small smile before he casually strolls off.
His jeans are molded perfectly to his perfect ass, and you sigh.
Tumblr media
“Are you going to go visit him?” Diana asks through a mouthful of donut.
“Nah,” you answer.
Diana’s eyes bug out of her head with a gasp.
“Um you said he was insanely hot. I don’t’ get it. You don’t NOT go visit.”
“You do if he’s a grumpy jerk.”
Diana laughs. “Maybe he needs to eat more of these donuts!”
You roll your eyes. “He had a whole box of them. He was with his friend Sam who was also hot. I should go visit him.”
“Ohhh make Mr. Grumpy jealous. I like it.”
You shove the card into your bag and grab a donut.
“I think we need more donuts for this day,” you retort.
Tumblr media
After a long donut filled debate with Diana you decide to make the call to the VA office. To your happy surprise Sam answers.
“Hi Sam,” you say and tell him your name, thrilled he remembers you.
“I was just thinking I’d like to bring some treats down to the office this week. Is there anything in particular I should get?”
You can practically hear Sam’s smile through the phone. He rattles off some orders and then tells you the days and times that would work. When you hang up you feel lighter just knowing you could do something kind.
You’ve never been in the VA building before even though you’ve passed by it many times. The interior is warm and inviting and has a large walnut desk and matching benches nearby.
At the sight of the benches, you laugh to yourself, wondering if Bucky claimed these seats too.
“Hey.”
You barely catch the quiet greeting but look up to see Bucky standing by a doorway. You suddenly feel hyperalert, every inch of your sensitive tingling and awake. You almost forgot how gorgeous he is, his light blue henley fitted around his broad chest and his dark jeans showing off those long and muscular legs.
Your heart flutters as he crosses the hallway, hard expression on his face, before he stares down at the box of donuts.
“You can’t eat them all!”
He gives you a quelling look, though you’re sure you catch a hint of amusement in his eyes.
“I can actually,” he says in a matter-of-fact tone, “but when I’m here I share.”
“What if I want one?” you ask, feeling brave and maybe a little flirtatious.
It takes him a moment to answer as he holds you under his keen regard, sweeping his gaze down your body before it lingers on your lips and finally returns to your eyes.
“Maybe,” he grumbles, then turns on his heel. “Follow me.”
You enter a room with tables and chairs set up and one long counter and cabinets in the back where you see a coffee machine, refrigerator, and small microwave.
“Do you have a favorite?”
His question surprises you and it takes you a minute to realize he’s referring to the donuts.
“OH, yeah definitely. The Bavarian cream is the best!”
“Hm,” he replies.
He doesn’t indulge you with his favorite, so you decide to ask.
“What about you?”
“Glazed,” he says, then adds, “with sprinkles.”
You stare at him for a beat then a laugh bursts out of you.
“I was not expecting the sprinkles!”
You’re too busy laughing to notice his smile.
“Well, I’ll keep that in mind for the next time I visit,” you tell him when you finally catch your breath.
“You want to come back?” he asks, eyes narrowed.
You don’t have a chance to answer because Sam enters the room with a boisterous greeting.
“There you are!” he says. “So glad you stopped by to see us.”
“And I brought donuts!”
“Perfect,” Sam says, placing a hand on your shoulder. “Come on, I’ll show you around.”
You look back at Bucky as Sam leads you out of the room. “Don’t eat any of those!”
Bucky’s scoff is the last thing you hear before you step out into the hallway.
After Sam gives you a tour you meet some of the veterans while you share donuts. It’s wonderful to talk with them and make them laugh and you’re happy you made the visit.
Right before you leave you run into Bucky who’s hovering over the last of the box of donuts.
“Slim pickings huh?” you say as you look into the mostly empty box.
“Yeah,” he huffs with a scowl.
“Lucky for you,” you say and open the cabinet above your head, “I stashed one in here earlier before we gave them out.”
You pull out the paper plate and take the napkin off to reveal a glazed donut with colored sprinkles.
He studies you in such a way that your thighs press tightly together in reaction. His expression is irritatingly unreadable as your eyes meet again.
He shifts as if he’s uncomfortable, an awkward silence hanging between you, before he blurts out, “thanks doll.”
His expression morphs into one of surprise and it matches yours, but you recover quickly enough with a warm smile.
“You’re welcome Bucky. Thanks for having me.”
Tumblr media
You’re just getting situated with your book on the couch, rain pelting the window outside, when your phone rings.
Sam’s name lights up the screen and you answer with an excited, “Ghostbusters, whaddya want?”
The silence your met with is unexpected as you were hoping for one of Sam’s bright laughs.
“Tell me that’s not how you answer your phone normally.”
At Bucky’s weary comment your smile falls. “Bucky? I thought it was Sam?”
“You sound disappointed,” he points out.
“Only because you seem bothered by my amazing phone answering skills. I’m sorry that one got lost on you. Sam would have loved it.”
“So, if you knew it was me calling what would have said?” he asks.
“Uh…hello?”
“Uh hello?”
“No…just, hell, ugh! Why are you calling me from Sam’s phone.”
Silence again.
“Bucky?”
“Yeah…I didn’t have your number and wasn’t sure you’d answer if I called from mine so…”
“Ok,” you say. “And now that you have mine just text me and I’ll have yours.”
He’s quiet again before he continues in a rush of words.
“So, we’re having our annual fundraiser gala soon and Sam mentioned that you said you’d like to volunteer more, and we could use some help planning.”
“I’m definitely interested,” you cheer. “When should I come by?”
You get all the information you need from Bucky and then hang up, his conversation stilted when you started getting more excited and telling him that you were looking forward to working with him and helping. He hung up with a mumbled goodbye and never text you to give you his number.
It makes your thoughts of his disinterest solidify and you try to let it go and focus on the good you’ll be doing.
Tumblr media
The week moves slowly but when Friday comes around you feel the same lightness from the last time you visited the VA. It gives you renewed energy, and you open the door with a smile, searching for the familiar face of Sam or Bucky.
You don’t see either of them, so you head down the hallway to the small dining room. Sam is at the front by one of the windows. He waves, pointing to his phone to signal he’ll be right off, and Bucky is at the counter.
He turns to face you, and you walk over.
“Hey,” you say.
“Hiya doll,” he answers.
Confusion washes over you at his sweet endearment, but you push it down and focus on what he’s holding.
“More donuts!” you exclaim.
“We always have them,” he says lightly. “I got you a Bavarian.”
At your silence you feel his eyes on you, and you drag them away from the perfectly powdered and filled deliciousness in the box.
“Why didn’t you text me?” you ask without thinking.
“What?” he says, his brow furrowed.
“You never text me to give me your number.”
His attention never leaves you, his gaze drifting from your head down to your feet. When he reaches your face again he stares and pulls his phone from his back pocket.
“Can I have your number?” he asks quietly.
“Sure,” you say and take his phone to program it in.
“Thanks,” he says.
“And thank you for my donut,” you finally say. “That was really thoughtful.”
He nods and grabs a glazed before motioning for you to follow him. The rest of the day is spent pouring over invites and food orders as well as any little detail that needs to be squared away before the event.
Most of the time it’s you, Sam and Bucky seated at a table, but Sam leaves occasionally to take a phone call or manage something in the office.
During the down time you learn more about Bucky, asking questions and mostly getting abridged but not unfriendly answers. He seems genuinely interested in what you have to say and that, again, confuses you more as to his intentions-if he has any at all.
Once the sun has set and you’re worn out you help them clean up then gather your things.
“How are you getting home?” Sam asks as you walk together to the door.
“I think I’m gonna walk,” you tell him.
Bucky makes a sound of disapproval behind you.
“What?” you turn and ask.
“It’s late,” he states.
“And?” you answer.
“It’s not safe.”
“I appreciate your concern but after sitting most of the afternoon I want to walk.”
“I’ll walk with you.”
At Bucky’s statement both you and Sam give him a wide-eyed look.
“You don’t have to do that,” you tell Bucky.
“Nah, he’s right,” Sam chimes in. “He should go with you. I would offer but I’m in the opposite direction.”
Sam tries to hide his smirk, but it’s written all over his face, so you just smile and accept Bucky’s kind and gentlemanly offer.
“Just gimme a sec. I want to grab something from my bike.”
“Bike?” you murmur as you track his movement toward a sleek black motorcycle parked at the curb.
Holy shit.
He doesn’t say a word as he walks back toward you.
“I didn’t know you had a motorcycle,” you say.
“Yeah,” he says while running a hand through his hair. “You know…easier in the city.”
“Smart and badass. It’s beautiful.”
That’s when he smiles at you, a real smile, for the very first time.
You nearly swoon.
“Yeah?” He looks boyishly pleased about your reaction.
You nod and give the bike one last look before you fall into step beside him. You chat about everything from the upcoming event to how he met Sam and even find out more about his motorcycle. He’s more open and comfortable and indulges you with more details about anything you ask.
As you pass by a bar a large crowd of young people come out, clearly drunk and rowdy as they sway and swerve as a mass toward you.
Bucky links your fingers together and deftly slides you out of harms way. Your skin tingles, little sparks of feeling shooting up your arm and it’s all you can concentrate on until the group passes by and continues down the street in a clamor.
“They seem like they’re having fun,” you giggle. “Thanks for the save there.”
The corner of his mouth starts to tilt upward and then he remembers he has a hold on your hand and his eyes drop and widen and he quickly let’s go, clearing his throat and mumbling, “no problem.”
“Did you ever go out like that and get wild?” you ask after a beat, hoping to lighten the mood again.
“Who me?” he asks and blows a raspberry. “Nah. I’m not really into big crowds much.”
“Then you should really enjoy the gala next week,” you say wryly.
“Right?” he answers. “If it weren’t for such a good cause and important to me, I’d skip it all together and stay behind the scenes.”
“Well at least you’ll have Sam!” you say in support.
“Actually…he’s usually caught up in everything since I leave all the talking and canoodling to him.”
“Canoodling,” you repeat and cover your mouth to stifle your laughter.
“Yeah, yeah.”
“I can’t imagine you not wanting to canoodle.”
Your delivery drips with sarcasm, and he throws you another killer smile.
He has the sexiest smile ever. Of course he does. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t smile a lot, because of its killer effect? Or is he really just Mr. Grumpy? One or the other.
When you reach your apartment you walk toward the double doors, thanking him for walking you home. Searching for your keys in your bag you end up dropping your phone, bending to pick it up at the same time Bucky does.
You bump heads and he immediately apologizes and rests his hand gently on your forehead.
“You ok?” he asks, rubbing his thumb soothingly.
“Yeah,” you say, slightly breathless.
His gaze drops to your lips and lingers before coming back to your eyes.
“Hey um…” he starts, those beautiful blue eyes studying you, sweeping over your features, as if tallying every little detail he finds.
“Yeah?” you ask, giving him a sweet and reassuring smile.
“Uh, thanks, for the help today. I’ll see you soon.”
You deflate at his quick departure; telling him it was “your pleasure and you’ll see him later.”
You’re not even to your apartment door when your phone chimes. You retrieve it from your pocket and see Bucky’s name on the screen.
You open the text and nearly drop your phone again.
'Do you want to be my date to the fund raiser?'
Like sunshine bursting through a cloud, you feel butterflies erupt in your stomach, a fluttery warning that you’re way in over your head.
Tumblr media
“What are you going to wear?” Diana asks as you stand in front of your closet.
“I have no idea!” you sigh. “I asked for a dress code, and he said ‘formal’…and that’s it. Then I asked what he was wearing, and he said, ‘a tux.’”
“Not very chatty, is he?” she mutters.
You shrug at stare at your closet that has nothing appropriate in it.
“Looks like we’re going shopping,” Diana says as she jumps off the bed and grabs her bag. “Come on, we’re gonna find you something that will knock his socks off.”

Bucky picks you up in a town car, and you smile graciously as he opens the door for you, your internal nerves wild as you wait for his reaction to your appearance.
Unfortunately, his reaction isn’t worth the nerves because he stares blankly at you before giving you an abrupt nod of greeting.
All the while you try not to drool over him in a tux.
When you arrive inside you can’t hide your beaming smile. It looks beautiful. All the details having come together perfectly to create an elegant yet comfortable atmosphere.
“You’re really doing wonderful work here,” you tell Bucky.
He holds out his arm for you and smiles. “Thanks doll.”
“You’re here!”
You turn at the familiar voice. Sam hurries over and takes you in.
“Wow,” he says, raising his brows. “Lucky man Barnes.”
He claps Bucky on the shoulder. “Enjoy yourselves. I’ll be around if you need me.”
Bucky places his hand on your lower back and leads you across the room to the table. Your breath catches at the sensation of his hand on your bare skin, but you try to shake it off.
His hand presses deeper into your back, and you follow his guide. People greet him and he says hello, but he doesn’t stop to chat.
“Shouldn’t you be taking the time to talk with these people?” you ask.
“Probably,” he says as he pulls out your chair.
You snort because he sounds like he couldn’t care less.
You’re the first people at the table and you stare at the fancy centerpiece.
“It really does look amazing in here.”
Bucky glances over it all, bemused.
“It does. I guess it’s necessary.”
“What do you mean,” you ask.
“I come to these events for Sam and the veterans. I want to raise money and help but if it were up to me it would all be quiet and low key. This kind of socializing isn’t my first choice.”
Turning to study his handsome face, you smile. “Is any kind of socializing your choice?”
He throws you a dark but amused look. “You’re funny”
You hold back more laughter and touch his knee, giving it a soft squeeze. His eyes meet yours and you swallow around the sudden sensation of your racing heart.
Needing to break the intense eye contact, you turn to observe the room, noting that more people are heading to their tables.
You spot Sam talking to a lovely woman and you feel Bucky’s smile.
“Sam likes her,” Bucky says quietly.
“Who is she?” you ask in a whisper.
He leans into you, his breath tickling your cheek as he murmurs, “the daughter of one of our veterans. They’ve met a few times, and I can tell he’s totally taken with her.”
You turn your head slightly, bringing your faces just inches apart. “She’s lovely. I’m sure she likes him too.”
His attention moves from Sam to you, and his eyes narrow as he realizes how close you are. But he doesn’t move back. Instead, he searches your eyes.
Your heartbeat skips and you’re almost afraid to breathe.
Needing to break the tension once again, you wrench your gaze away and find Sam shooting you a quick glance.
“I have the sudden urge to run over there and embarrass him,” you say with a devious smile.
Bucky’s answer is to move away but only because he throws his head back in laughter.
“I’d pay to see that,” he replies, mischief dancing in his eyes.
Before long, your table is filled, and Bucky introduces you to the people he knows. The older couple sitting nearest to you is just smitten with both you and Bucky, peppering you with questions and hanging on your every word.
They tell you their life story too, how they found each other and fell in love and have been together ever since. It warms you and you give his thigh another squeeze under the table.
He places his hand over yours and brushes his thumb across your knuckles.
The food comes and you turn his way, lightly tugging on your hand.
“I need that to eat,” you giggle.
“Oh, right,” he says with one more sweep of his thumb before he releases you with a soft expression.
The food is delicious, and you find yourself smiling between every bite.
“You two look like you’re having a good time.”
Bucky stiffens next to you, and you wait for his move before following his gaze to the older woman standing behind you.
“Don’t you look handsome as always James,” she comments then flits her eyes to you but doesn’t say anything more.
Bucky smiles but it doesn’t reach his eyes. “Mrs. Whitman. How are you?”
“Fine, just fine. Now I need to steal you away for a moment.”
Bucky’s eyes lift over Mrs. Whitman’s shoulder and his lips turn down in a frown.
“I can’t, sorry Mrs. Whitman. I’m here with someone.”
He looks at you and smiles.
Mrs. Whitman sighs, clearly annoyed.
“You can’t spare just a moment?” she pleads, trying to appear genuine.
“Sorry,” Bucky says as kindly as he can.
Without a goodbye she huffs off and you wait until she’s far enough away before looking at Bucky. His frown melts away as your gazes lock.
“I’m sorry,” he says. “Her husband was a veteran, and he recently passed. She’s been trying to set me up with her daughter since, but I’m not interested.”
“I hope I didn’t cause you any trouble,” you tell him.
“No. Not at all doll. She can be rude sometimes, but I think she’s just struggling with grief and doesn’t know what to do with herself. I feel bad, but like I said. I’m really not interested.”
You smile reassuringly then excuse yourself to the bathroom, needing a little air. When you return, you see Bucky hasn’t moved from his seat and his gaze is zeroed in on the hallway to the bathroom.
As you cross the room toward him, his eyes drift down your body. His gaze lingers on your bare shoulders and the sway of your hips and by the time you reach the table, you need another restroom break to cool off.
He doesn’t move out of the way, so you have to brush up against him to sit back down. When your eyes meet, his are heated. You stare at each other, the music and chatter around you fading away.
The lovely old woman next to you breaks you out the haze when she asks where the restroom is. You point her in the right direction, telling her you’ll happily escort her, but she refuses kindly and slowly makes her way through the crowd.
Once she’s safely down the hallway, you look away and find yourself staring at Bucky. His face is close.
Too close.
Or maybe just close enough depending on how you look at it.
His eyes search yours and you ignore the rushing in your ears as you close the distance between you and gently brush your lips over his.
Your mouth tingles from the brief touch as you pull away.
He scowls hard at your mouth, but you’re not sure if it’s because you kissed him or because you barely kissed him.
“What…?” he starts to ask roughly, but a loud banging at the front of the room, startles you and pulls your attention away.
Sam stands at a small podium, a smile on his face as he greets everyone.
Nice timing Sam.
Tumblr media
‘How’s work today?’
You smile at you phone and Bucky’s name on the screen.
‘It’s going…’ you type back. ‘How about you? I know you said your day was going to be busy.’
‘Up and down. We made some really good progress with one of our veterans today, but we lost one of our oldest members to cancer.’
‘Oh Bucky. I’m sorry it’s been a tough day. Do you need anything? I can come by on my lunch break.’
‘Thank you doll, I appreciate it. But it’s unfortunately something I’ve gotten used to. Comes with the territory.’
‘I’m here if you need anything.’
‘Thanks.’
You’re just clearing your desk at the end of the day when your phone rings. You smile at the sight of Bucky’s name, and you’re not surprised considering you’d received a text to inform you that your delivery had been successfully made.
“Hey,” you greet.
“Hey.” His voice is low, a little hoarse. He clears his throat. “You sent me donuts.’
You grin at how confused he sounds. “I did and cookies.”
In fact, you sent him a dozen glazed- with sprinkles of course- donuts and a box full of assorted cookies from your usual favorite bakery.
“I wanted you to have a little treat after a long day. I know you might be used to it but that doesn’t mean it isn’t hard on you.”
He’s quiet so long you have a horrible feeling that you may have crossed a line. But then he speaks.
“Thank you doll. I really appreciate it.”
You smile and try to quell the butterflies dancing around your stomach. “You’re welcome!”
“I’ve never had so many glazed donuts to myself!” There’s a teasing tone to his confession.
“But you have to share the cookies!” you tell him, trying to sound stern.
“Yeah, I’ll do my best,” he laughs. “But really, thank you.”
“It was nothing,” you say trying to shake off the giddy feeling he’s giving you with a shrug he can’t see.
His voice is gravelly when he promises, “it’s not nothing to me.”
You teeter on your feet. “Well, I’m glad it cheered you up a little. I’m just heading out of work so…”
“So, I’ll let you go.”
Did you hear a smile in his voice?
“I’ll see you this weekend for Sam’s BBQ?”
“Yes! Looking forward to it,” you say.
“Great doll, see you then and I am too.”
With that, he hangs up and you stand at your desk and try to slow the rapid beating of your heart.
Tumblr media
Bucky picks you up on his bike and you’re barely ashamed at how excited you are to ride with him.
He revs the engine when he pulls up at the curb where you’re standing and settles the bike with his leg on the sidewalk.
“No helmet?” you ask with a wave.
He sucks in a breath and his eyes are glued to your legs.
“Wrong outfit?” you say as you track his gaze. “I can go…”
“Nope,” he says quickly.
He hops off the bike and offers a hand to help you get on, squeezing his eyes closed when you get close to him and your shoulder brushes against his chest.
“Are you ok?” you ask him, looking up into his blue eyes.
“Yep. All good,” he says, voice strained.
You narrow your eyes at his sharp tone but take his offered hand and help onto the bike. Once you’re wrapped around him and pressed to his back you lean up and say, “what’s going on? You seem grumpy today?”
“Nothing,” he replies before revving the engine and pulling away from the curb.
It doesn’t take long to get to Sam’s and when you arrive Bucky parks his bike and hops off lithely and you wait for him to offer his hand to help you off.
To your surprise he takes you by the waist and lifts you off the bike in one easy movement. Your body is plastered to his as your feet slide to the ground.
You shiver at the contact.
“You cold?” He frowns at you.
“Nope,” you answer, looking away and straightening the bottom of your dress.
Over his shoulder you see Sam walking your way.
“There you two are!” he yells.
You wave and smile.
“You look gorgeous as always,” Sam says.
Sam leads the way to the backyard and Bucky places a hand at your lower back. Your brain fritzes and it’s all you can think about as you walk through the yard saying hello to people as you pass.
When you reach Sarah, Sam’s sister, you greet her with a warm hello, having met her once before at the VA. Bucky joins in the conversation, his fingers still warmly pressed into your skin when he starts to draw little circles on your lower back.
You suck in a breath and trip over your words and then he splays his palm and slides it around to your hip, drawing you into his side.
Your heart stops.
Sarah doesn’t seem to notice or if she does she doesn’t make it known and when Sam calls for her help she rushes off with a promise to come back and chat after.
“You seem to be in a better mood now that we’re here,” you say as you turn your eyes to Bucky.
His eyebrows draw in. “I…you look gorgeous.”
Your lips part and your mouth falls open.
“You always do. You did at the fund raiser. You do today. It’s just…I’m not good at…”
He trails off, his words dying on his lips and his cheeks turning your favorite shade of pink.
His words fill you with relief and you swear that it’s the lingering heat of that barely there kiss from the gala that you can’t seem to forget because the next thing you know you’re grabbing him by the front of his shirt and pulling his lips down to yours.
You intend it to be a quick kiss, but he brings one of his hands to the back of your neck and the other presses deep into your back as he takes over. Your small gasp turns into a moan, and it ignites him. He deepens the kiss, hungry and desperate and it sets every inch of you on fire.
“Uh, there are children present.”
Sam’s voice cuts through the moment like a bucket of cold water and you move back. Bucky’s hand flexes at the back of your neck as if to stop you from moving away from him. You breathe hard and state at each other.
Best. Kiss. Of. Your. Life.
Bucky appears dazed enough for you to believe maybe it was for him too.
The party around you comes back to life and Sam’s broad smile fills your vision. He claps Bucky hard on the back. “I knew ya had it you Barnes!”
Sam saunters off with some extra pep to his step and you watch him walk back into the house. Bucky’s fingers close around yours and he tugs you away from the crowd.
“Where are we going?” you ask.
He doesn’t answer but just holds tightly to your hand until you reach a small garden enclosed by a low white fence. At the back there’s a wrought iron bench just big enough for two.
“This is so pretty,” you whisper as he walks you through the garden.
When you reach the bench he turns your way.
“You’re really going to share the bench with me?” you ask playfully.
His answer is to lift his hand to cup your jaw, his eyes dropping to your mouth. You hold your breath as he leans in. The first contact he makes is just a brush of his lips over yours. The briefest sweep.
“I’m sorry I was such an ass that first day we met,” he whispers against your lips. “I was having a rough day but it’s no excuse.”
“It’s ok,” you breathe out. “I forgive you.”
He does it again. Sweeps his lips along yours and you hear the quietest moan escape his throat as he leans in closer, pressing his soft, strong mouth to yours and taking your top lip between his.
With a smile forming against your mouth, he tilts his head and kisses you with a heat that rivals the one only minutes ago. His free hand slides around your waist and smooths along the curve of your spine, dragging you up against his body.
Without an audience he kisses you long enough to have you pulling back for need of air.
“Bucky,” you whisper, grabbing his biceps for support.
“I really am sorry,” he murmurs.
“You’re good at that.”
“At what?” he asks, distracted by your mouth again.
“Kissing.”
He hums. “That’s only because I’m kissing you. And I plan to keep kissing you. For as long as you’ll let me.”
“Forever sounds good,” you whisper at the feel of his lips hovering over yours.
“Won’t be long enough but it’s a start doll.”

Just a fluffy little thought. A grumpy, moody, broody Bucky, moping and grumbling through the compound with a scowl on his face. He was restless and annoyed the whole jet ride home. He tosses his bags off to the side, throwing off his tactical gear without a care in the world and Sam and Nat are utterly baffled because the mission was a complete success. Bucky's plan worked perfectly, his strategies were what got them in and out, he'd even saved a group of civilians that were unexpected.
Why was he grumpier than usual?
Because something is not right.
Everyone gathers for dinner and he barely takes a bite. He's shifting his food around his a fork before getting up and sitting on the couch instead with his arms across his chest and shoulders tensed. No one breathes a word, letting him storm to himself. Except you. You'd noticed Bucky's less than pleasant attitude but it doesn't scare you and you felt bad seeing him sitting by himself clearly stewing over something.
Maybe you had a crush on the soldier too. Maybe.
"Hey" You give him a soft smile as you take a seat beside him, still giving him space, "You okay?"
He gives you a shrug in response but that was normal with Bucky. You'd check in again and if he still didn't want to talk, you'd leave him alone.
"What's wrong"
Usually his standard answer of telling people to fuck off was easy but not with you. Never with you. Not when you turn him into a pile of mush and fluff. Bucky's grumpy face turns more into a pout as he contemplates telling you what's been making him so mad.
"My tummy hurts" he mumbles and you have to hold every fiber of your body together to keep from melting into a puddle because he could have said he felt unwell. Stomach pain. Stomach ache.Felt sick. Felt off. He could have said absolutely any other variation of what he was feeling but no.
The poor, grumpy, angry soldier was huffy and puffy because of a tummy ache.
"I'm sorry bub" you coo, not even realizing what you'd called him,"What would make you feel better?" You ask but Bucky doesn't actually know the answer. When he usually felt queasy he'd just grit it out until it went away.
"When I was little, my ma would make me some soup" He wasn't sure if it actually cured anything but he remembered it always being the yummiest thing he'd tasted and the one thing that made him feel all better. "But that was for when I had a cold"
"What about for tummy aches" You asked, noting the way the soldiers cheeks turned pink, his fingers fidgeting with each other. Of course he knew what his ma would do for his little achy belly but it's not like you could help...
"Um, sometimes she'd tuck me in bed and then.."
"Then?" You cock your head in curiosity while Bucky's voice dies on his tongue.
"Then she'd rub my tummy till I went to sleep" He rushes out with a small voice while keeping his eyes trained on his hands. His eyes grow wide at the giggle you let out, worried he'd made a complete idiot of himself, what were you to do with that information, it's not like you'd-
"C'mere" You take his hand gently in yours, gauging his reaction before moving him to lay his head on your lap. Bucky's stomach is now a mess of butterflies and whatever was upsetting him, his muscles melting into Jello as soon as you'd touched him. "Is this okay?" Your hand rests closer to his hip than right on his stomach and Bucky is barely able to squeak out a yes along with a quick nod.
You hum, moving your hand to rub soft circles around his tummy, his firm muscles under making you giddy on the inside. You recollect your nerves, focused on soothing motions, your other hand moving to play with Bucky's hair. You card your fingers through his short chestnut locks, smiling at the way he closes his eyes, his breathing starting to slow, muscles releasing their tenison.
"Better?" You whisper, giggling to yourself at the deep purr he made in response, relaxing with your gentle ministrations. He rolls over, smushing his face against your stomach, far too relaxed to care. The soft snores that follow after let you know the remedy certainly worked. As soon as you move your hand away, he blindly reaches out, placing it right back where it belongs and going back to sleep immediately after, tummy ache all gone, flutterly little butterflies replacing them. He's already dreaming of all the ways he could return the favour.
Isn't he an absolute precious baby.
So cute.
Bonus scene:
Of course the team gawk at what they see; the grumpy soldier now happy as a clam on your lap.
"What's wrong with him?"
"Bucky's tummy hurts" You reply with a smile and honestly the answer sends everyone into chaos.
"Awww Buckyyyy"
"So that's why he was so grumpy. Should've known when he kept pouting everytime we had turbulence"
"AWWWW The winter soldier as a widdle tummy ache?" Sam coos, only to silence his cackles when Bucky's eyes shoot open, staring daggers at him. "Don't give me that look when you're curled up on y/n's lap like a cat"
"Does rubbing it help ya feel all better-oh fuck"
Bucky's glare sends everyone scrambling right out, the empty room leaving him all content again.
Yes.
Rubbing his tummy made him feel all better.

Sit still!
Pairing: Nurse!Reader x Grumpy!Bucky Barnes
Warnings: Very, very light swearing. Just pure fluff!!
Word count: 1.3k
Summary: After stupidly jumping out of a craft on a mission, ending up with many broken ribs. Bucky is placed under your care unwillingly and he makes the week hell for you. But when the week ends he starts to regret everything.
A/N: This is pretty short and maybe i’ll come back to it another time and try something new but so far i like how this turned out. If you like this, i’d really appreciate it if you could share or leave comment!
Tumblr media
“Will you just sit still?!” You grumble at Bucky for what feels like the millionth time today.
“Well stop poking me and maybe I will.” He practically hissed at you. You swear that when Fury assigned you to take care of him he was plotting your early death– or at least Bucky's death.
“If you sit still I'll give you a cookie…” you try to bribe, but of course this just earned you a very hard and angry glare from Bucky.
Due to Bucky’s recklessness on a recent mission, he is now under your care until he can breathe without whining and groaning about his ribs, which he broke several of. He thought the easiest and quickest way to land by a mission base was to jump out of the craft without a parachute– stupid!
You were the nice nurse. The nurse everyone on the team liked to be cared for the most when they had an injury, except a certain fossil. He was grumpy and rude to you for no reason, always making an effort to ruin your day with some stupid comment every time he saw you. But this week had been hell!
So here he was pouting and glaring at you in the plush armchair in your office that practically cowers under his large frame. “I need to check the progress of your ribs and I can't do that without touching you. So please…just sit still.” You sigh, your patience being stretched very, very thin.
Bucky notices your stress and annoyance with him and he does feel some sort of pity but he can’t shake this unfamiliar feeling you give him everytime he feels your hands on his body or your gaze on him. “...Fine.” He mumbles grudgingly.
You move your hands back into place against his chest, gently feeling where the broken ribs are located. Due to the serum, he had enhanced healing abilities but it never failed to amaze you how fast they fixed up his and Steve’s body.
“They’re healing just fine.” you say as you pull your hands away and move to sit by your desk. “I still don’t recommend doing any strenuous activities just yet but, you’ll live.”
Bucky just rolls his eyes like usual and keeps his unwavering scowl on his face– it annoys you and somehow hurts you to see just how unwilling he is to accept any help. That was the way HYDRA treated him though, you knew that. Hell, everyone knew that.
“James…” you start softly with a quiet sigh. “It’s just me and you in here…i need to know if you’re in pain so i can fix it.”
Silence– as expected.
He sighs and looks down at his boots, his feet shuffling slightly as he thinks about your words. Soft brown locks fall over his eyes and shields you from looking into his broken and guilty eyes. “I’m fine” a hoarse voice says so quietly.
Hesitating for a moment, you look over his body language and think about his tone. “Okay…” you respond simply, knowing not to push him.
Within the silence, Bucky stands up and storms out of your office– he almost let it all out. How did you have this effect on him? You were so easy and sweet, the complete opposite of him, he couldn’t let you in and see what HYDRA did to him. You weren’t allowed to see how everytime you checked his vitals, he felt like he was back in HYDRA’s claws, back to being prepped to be shocked again. No, he had to keep you away from that.
The week passes and ends, you were no longer assigned to take care of Bucky anymore and he’s back to missions and training– avoiding you. Part of you is happy that he’s not around you everyday by force, no longer having to endure his glares and rudeness but another part of you felt shitty.
That week felt like showing Bucky for the first time that it was okay to be cared for, to be looked after with no ulterior motive except for the benefit of his health. You wish he had that reminder everyday instead of throwing himself into missions, being reckless with himself because he didn’t think his body was worth protecting. This feeling was stronger than the happiness over his departure from your care– a lot stronger.
It seems you weren’t the only one thinking about that week. After some reflecting and thinking (a.k.a, talking to Steve), he realised why he felt so strongly when you touched him and why he wanted to open up to you. Yes, he was angry at the reason why at first. Angry at himself for being so foolish and falling for the team nurse, “She’s supposed to be caring!” he repeated like a mantra. Angry at himself for feeling like it was okay to let you in, to want you to care about him, to know why he struggled.
But Steve explained to him that you weren’t as weak or as fragile as he kept insisting you were– scolding him slightly for the way he dismissed you. Bucky realised that he should probably explain some things to you– or at least apologise, you were only doing your job and he took it out on you.
That night he wrote a letter to you, the words were genuine and words he knew he would mess up if he tried to say them to his face–
“Hey, I'm sorry. I know that’s pretty generic but it’s the truth. I’m still figuring this shit out so don’t take it too personally, it’s just really hard for me. I know you were only doing your job and I'm so sorry that I made it difficult. I wish I could take it back and just be open with you. I know you would’ve treated me the way i needed if i asked, you’re sweet like that. You’re good at your job and I'm pretty sure my ribs feel even better than they did before I jumped out of that plane. Anyways, i hope you’re free tomorrow night so maybe we can grab a drink, I’ll even buy you one of those fruity cocktails if you’re into that,
James Buchanan Barnes.”
Sealing the letter, and addressing it to you on the front, he walked through the compound and eventually found your office and slid the note under the door for you to find in the morning.
But on this night in particular, you decided to stay late to finish some work, maybe by luck or fate the note arrives while you’re already there. You read through the letter and smiled softly, touched that Bucky would let you in like this, you knew it was rare considering he really only spoke to Sam and Steve.
Pocketing the note, you quickly walk down the hall to head to Bucky’s room to give him an answer. Your feet carry you as quickly as they can without running, trying to catch up to Bucky as soon as possible.
You arrive at his door and knock three times in a very desperate motion before the door swings open. There he is. In his sleepy and shocked state. He’s surprised to see you here so soon but he’s slightly anxious for your response– he’s practically anticipating for you to throw the letter back at him and insult him.
To his surprise, you don’t. “I don’t need a fruity cocktail, I'd prefer a coffee…tomorrow morning, in my office?” you say softly as you bite your lip back gently in anticipation.
Bucky’s eyes seem locked in place on your face, his lips parted from surprise until they slowly break into the tiniest smile that lights up his face in your eyes, a smile that gives you a glimpse into the charming soldier before HYDRA.
“Coffee it is then, Doll” he says in a low tone before gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind your ear, wanting to fully see your face in all its beauty. Wanting to see the face of the person he was about to let into his life and hopefully never let go of.

summery: you and bucky have a relationship nobody is aware of. they keep trying to set him up with other women while bucky is trying to avoid them.
pairing: Grumpy!Bucky x Quiet!Reader
warning: SMUT, fluff, bad writing???, swearing
A/N: clearly i have a thing for grumpy bucky but i also have a thing was hidden relationships. you can read the asks for this fic at the lodge's BNB and also here is the steve's story in this universe
Tumblr media
“Oh come on Bucky, how long will you stay single? Don't you think it's time you start looking for a partner?” Natasha pointed her knife at Bucky while they were polishing their weapons.
“I don't need anyone, Nat.” Bucky sighs and keeps on cleaning his guns.
“Bullshit!” Natasha stabs the wooden table beside Bucky. “We're all wrung out after missions and we all need a release. You know better than to stay holed up in a room with veins full of adrenaline. If not a girlfriend, get some beneficial partner.” Natasha shrugged.
“You might be doing that, Nat but I really don't need someone. I am happy where I am.” Bucky picks up his guns and arranges them back in their place. He wipes his workstation clean and walks out.
The mission today wasn't that bad but Bucky felt tired. The entire team has been on his case for over two months. How can he convince them that he doesnt need anyone? He's fine where he is. In fact, he is happier than ever and he would never trade this with anything else.
He walks in his room and wearily grabs his towel and sweatpants to take a shower. He turns on the water and stands under it till he hears his bathroom door being opened. He turns on the hot water to the right temperature and shuffles to make space. He hears some rustling and the shower curtain is pulled slightly open. You, very slowly step in and stand under the water source.
“I missed you, doll.” Bucky wraps his arms around you. You nod with a slight blush.
You pull out the loofah and pour the body wash on it. Bucky takes it from your hand and starts helping you clean up. Once you are covered in soap, you turn to Bucky and return the favor. Washing away the grime, dirt and tiredness of the day, you both towel each other dry.
“Bucky,” You point at one of his t-shirts from the wardrobe and look down thinking he might reject what you're asking.
“You don't need to ask me, doll. What's mine is yours.” He pulls a t-shirt on you and kisses your cheek. You nod and blush even more. You shuffle onto the bed and snuggle to your side of the bed, waiting patiently for Bucky to come.
“Tell me about your day, doll. Was it very draining?” he slips into the bed and brings you closer. You wrap your arms around his waist and bury your face in his chest and nod a yes.
He sighs in content and pulls the comforter up. Your legs are parted and one of them is resting on Bucky’s hips. He kisses your forehead and his metal arm slowly drags to your inner thighs. You weren't wearing any underwear, giving complete access to Bucky, as he plunged his metal middle finger into your core. You gasp and your hold around Bucky tightens. He pulls out his finger and rubs your clit, making you moan in his chest. His hold on your waist tightens as he pushes two fingers in you again and uses his thumb to caress your nub. Your moans and gasps fill the quiet room as you reach the edge. You twist a little and put your hand on your mouth as you come all over Bucky’s sweatpants. You sigh and push Bucky a little, signaling him to grab new sweatpants. He complies and snuggles back into the bed against you.
……………………
The kitchen was lively today. Nobody was on a mission so the atmosphere was very relaxed. But not everyone was relaxing.
“Bucky, come on, go on this date. She's really nice and totally your type.” Sam pushed the topic further.
“How do you know my type, bird brain?” Bucky walked behind the kitchen counter.
You were standing there, making lunch for everyone while Bucky helped. Bucky would discreetly hold your waist or find a way to keep close to you in the kitchen. You were a blushing mess but Bucky didn't mind. As he saw nobody was looking, he kissed your cheek and went to the fridge to pretend as if nothing had happened. You just stood there with eyes wide.
“Let me help out.” Bucky very subtly held your waist and moved you away from the stove and started stirring the soup pot. He knew he had shocked you enough and you needed to calm down.
“She's all goth. You grunt, she stares. It's like a match made in heaven, Tinman. Go out with her. Nat arranged the date for you.” Sam continued and Nat nodded.
You looked up and saw Bucky roll his eyes and shake his head. His hand went to his chest and caressed his shirt before going back to the stove.
“I'm not going anywhere. I've told you before, I do not want to go on dates. I am happy where I am.”
“Too late, Barnes. She'll be waiting for you at the cafe this evening. I've already arranged the date and promised her. You can't back out now.” Nat warned Bucky.
“What the fuck, Nat! I told you I'm not interested. Cancel it. Im not going and thats final.” Bucky slams the stirring spoon on the counter and stomps out of the kitchen but not before subtly nudging you to follow.
“Talk some sense into him. He listens to you. Tell him it is a good idea to meet new people,” Sam pleads to you.
You just shake your head and grab some soup in two bowls. One for you and one for Bucky. The rest of the team gather slowly to grab the soup.
You stop in front of your door and knock. A furrowed eyed Bucky opens the door and side steps to let you in.
You hold out the soup bowl towards Bucky who has turned his back to you. “Bucky?”
Your quiet whisper of his name was enough to melt his brains off. He stands up and takes the soup bowl from your hand, putting it to the side. He hugs you and nuzzles his head in your neck, breathing in deeply. Your hand instinctively wraps around his waist and you start rubbing his back to calm him down.
“They just won't let it go. I'm sorry, doll. I wish I could give a better reason to them.” Bucky mumbles into your neck, sending waves of goosebumps all over your body.
“It's okay. Go.” You try to make him go because you know what it's like to be stood up and you know for the fact that Bucky will stand the girl up.
“I'm not gonna listen to you this time, doll. This is ridiculous. I am not leaving and that is final. Maybe I'll send one of those apology flowers you talk about to her through Happy.” he tightens his hold on you. You sigh. You knew it was pointless from getting him to change his mind.
You just wanted him to go and tell the girl that he is committed elsewhere but he is so stubborn that he won't even listen to what you have to say so you try to pull away to at least have him finish his soup.
“No. stop pulling away.” He sits back on bed with you in his lap, not even letting you go. You giggle and try to make space between the two of you so you can at least grab the soup bowl.
“Bucky, soup.” You manage to release your hand point at the bowls.
“Fine. but only because you are hungry and you made this with so much love.” His stomach grumbles and he makes a face, making you giggle even more.
His frown melts into a smile and he grabs your face, peppering kisses all over it, making you giggle and laugh. “This is why I'm not going anywhere. You are perfect, doll. I love you.”
……………………
“You piece of shit! Did you seriously stand her up? What the fuck is wrong with you?” Nat blasted at him and threw a punch at him.
Bucky ducked and svewerd to the side to keep you safe. You were standing very close to Bucky to hide the fact that he was holding your waist. But just as Nat threw a punch at him, he pulled away and moved away from you.
“Are you crazy? You could have hurt her.” Bucky pointed at you while dodging Nat’s punches. “And I sent flowers to say sorry. I told you I am not interested. When I say no, accept it.”
Bucky blocks Nat’s punches with his metal arm and pushes her away. Before she could do more damage, Steve walks in and stands between Bucky and Nat.
“Enough, both of you. This is not a dueling ground. Walk it off, Romanov. And you, Bucky, let's talk.” Steve nods at you and guides Bucky out of the gym leaving you sigh in relief.
That night, everyone had dinner on their own. You weren't very keen on cooking so you, Bucky and Steve got pizza together. They had put on Harry Potter since you loved talking about it.
Bucky couldn't keep his eyes off of you as you mouthed the dialogues with the characters. He smiled. Steve nudged Bucky and shook his head with a smile.
Steve loved seeing his best friend so happy. Steve loved you like a sister too. Your quiet and shy nature had calmed Steve in many situations and he was grateful. You had taken Steve’s side during the fallout and helped Bucky without a complaint. Surprisingly Bucky wanted to keep you by his side. Steve saw Bucky open up to you and you accepted him naturally. One day Steve found Bucky cuddled up with you and he knew this was his brother’s happy ending.
“I'm off to bed. Doll, take care,” Steve kissed your forehead. “Buck, please stop fighting with people. And think about what I said, both of you. I know where you come from but think about it before it causes more such issues.”
Steve closed the door behind him as he walked out and went off to bed. You turned off the movie and got up to throw the boxes away. Bucky took the boxes from you and walked out of the room to throw them off while you cleaned up the room and got ready to sleep.
Bucky walked in, took off his shirt and crawled in the bed beside you. “What are you thinking, doll?” He saw your solemn expression.
“Maybe Steve is right.” You whisper quietly, fumbling with the edge of the blanket.
Bucky holds your hand and pulls you close to lie on his chest. “Are you worried? I will do what you want to do, doll.”
“You have been doing what we want, Bucky, but after today, I didn't think it would get this serious.”
“Are you talking about my little tiff with Nat? It worked out at the end. You know that.” Bucky kissed your forehead.
“That and the fact that you got set up on a date. I-i know that you won't ever go but, it-it scared me. I-” Your voice started to waver.
You cried on Bucky’s chest. He lifted your face up and wiped away the tears, kissing your forehead.
“Doll, I get it. That's what made me more angry. They were talking about it to you as well. Trying to involve you in their little plans. I hated that you had to listen to all of that.”
“So? What do you think?” You lift your face and rest your chin on his chest, looking at him.
“Don't tell Steve I said this, it'll get to his head, but he is right.”
You rise up to give him a peck but Bucky pulls you for a deeper kiss. You moan and straddle his waist. He lifts your (his) t-shirt up and throws it on the floor, without letting his lips leave yours. You grind against his clothed erection.
“Didn't wear any panties, doll? My perfect girl.”
He flips you and removes his sweatpants. He aligns himself against your folds and slowly pushes himself in. your back arches on the bed and a loud moan escapes your throat. He flips the pair of you again and gets you on top of him, pushing his cock deeper into you. You slowly start to grind against him, making him moan and hiss. His hands are kneading your breasts and pinching your nipples as he starts pushing himself into you. You start bouncing over him to match his rutting speed.
“Fuck, doll. You're being so good right now.”
You whimper as you get closer to the edge. “Bucky, im gonna-”
“Cum, doll. Ive got us.”
His speed increases and soon you both cum and he fills you up while you're gushing down on him. You pant as your body falls on him. He caresses your back as you both catch your breaths.
He slowly gets up, taking you with him, to the bathroom to clean up. The cleaning up in the shower turns into another session and later you both fall on the bed, naked and exhausted. You pull yourself a little further from Bucky and pull out a dainty gold band from the bedside table.
You hand the ring over to Bucky who chuckles and slips it on your finger. You sigh with content and snuggle into the blanket with Bucky’s chest against your back, all tucked in.
……………….
The New Year’s party by Tony Stark is always iconic and it was just as this year too. You and Bucky came to the party together. Bucky was immediately called over by Tony to meet some people while you made your way to the corner of the room. Steve saw you and stood beside you with beer in his hand.
You look at Steve with beer and giggle.
Steve looks at you and rolls his eyes. “I know. But I enjoy the feeling of the bottle in my hand. Makes me feel normal, y’know.”
You nod and pat his back. He relaxes. You point at his hand and he shakes his head. “Not today.” Steve instantly changes the topic. “Bucky told me about your plan today. I'm here for support, you know that, right?” You nod your head vigorously, making Steve laugh out loud.
Hearing Steve laugh, Bucky turns his head in the direction to see a smile on your face while Steve laughs. He relaxes a little and goes back to the conversation. But no matter how hard he tried, he could not get to you the entire night. Someone either dragged him away or you were occupied with conversation with the teammates, but mostly it was the first reason.
It was time for dinner and you started digging around the buffet table to find your favorites. Bucky subtly joined you and handed him the plate.
“I'm nervous, doll.” He whispers in your ears. You look up to him and his stale blue eyes are staring deep into yours. You look around to see if someone isn't looking and pull him in a very secluded corner. You peck his lips and hug him tightly. He releases the breath he didn't know he was holding and wraps his free arm around you.
“Thank you, doll, I needed it.”
You take the plate from him and walk back to the buffet table and gather more food before moving back to the corner of the room. Bucky looks at you as you go with a bounce in your step. He could tell you were happy with the decision and he smiled.
……………….
People were counting down and Bucky was dragged to the other side of the room. You stood in your corner and tried to find Bucky in the crowd. You could have pushed through but he was too surrounded. You shift from one foot to another. The heels were killing you and Bucky had promised that you'd leave immediately after the countdown was done.
Bucky dodged and stumbled against the crowd to reach you. He heard many women in the crowd saying they had a chance with him and he did not want to give it to them.

Bucky came across one woman who tried to grab his shirt.

Natasha pointed at some woman behind Bucky who would like a kiss but Bucky distracted her

Almost there
Happy New Year!
Your back was to the crowd. A hand slipped around your waist and pulled you around to face your blue-eyed man. “Happy New Year, doll.”
He kissed you deeply. He was pouring out all the adrenaline that had flown into him while reaching you. Your hand cupped his face and pulled him closer. His metal arm held the back of your head to angle it better while his flesh arm held you tightly against his body.
You heard the entire room gasp and then pin drop silence. You needed to breathe so you tapped his shoulder twice. He pulled his lips away from yours and rested his forehead against yours.
“I guess it's time, doll.”
He moves to your side and pulls you closer to him. But before he could get a word out, Sam jumped in.
“You and her? When did that happen?”
“Well, if you would be quiet, I would tell you.” Bucky pulls you to the couch and sits down, taking you on his lap. You try to slide down beside him but his hold won’t budge. “Well, this is a family matter and I assume the rest of you got the message.”
“Right, well, thank you all for joining the party but I guess it ends here today.” Tony starts shooing people away.
Steve comes and sits beside Bucky and you. He slaps Bucky on the back supportively and you smile a little before burying your face in Bucky’s neck out of embarrassment.
“Everyone is gone. Out with it, Tinman.” Sam jumps onto the adjacent sofa with Nat and the rest of the team in tow.
“We're married.” Bucky pulls out his hand from around your waist and grabs your left hand to show off the matching wedding bands.
“What the fuck!!!” Natasha jumps out of the seat and comes close to check the rings.
“Since when?” Tony asked.
“Three years now, right doll?” You nod.
“Three years! Right under our noses?”
“When did you get married? Where? How? What?”
Everyone was very confused with the revelation.
“We met during the fallout and well, i started to fall in love with her. She felt the same and we got married in a city hall in New York.” Bucky explained in short terms. You were still in his lap and nodded to everything he said, supporting his statement.
“But, why were we not invited? We were with you the whole time! How did we not know about this?” Sam almost screamed his head off.
“You werent there all the time. Remember the day Steve sent you all to stakeout? He helped me and the doll get to the city hall and we got married. Captain America as our witness.” Bucky chuckled at the last statement, earning a small whack from you on his chest. Steve just rolled his eyes.
“You knew!” Natasha pointed at Steve who shrugged. “It wasn't my story to tell and I just wanted to see my best friend happy. He was happy with her so I stopped them.”
The discussion went on for almost an hour. Your little stifled yawn caught Bucky’s attention and he got up with you in his arms.
“Alright kids, my wife and I are tired and I have plans for our third anniversary tomorrow.”
“Bye.” You wave at them and slump back in his arms.
“Wait! At Least tell us your anniversary date.”
“It's January 1st. It was dead winter and my wife showed me that I can be happy during the cold too.”
He lets the elevator door shut on everyone’s faces. Seeing a sleepy you in his arms was all he could ask for this New Year.

Grumpy & the New Girl: Part 1
Masterlist
Bucky x reader
Summary: She wasn’t supposed to meet him like that. He wasn’t supposed to let her in. But sometimes, things don’t go according to plan.
Word Count: 3238
Tumblr media
You had been in contact with Steve Rogers for a while now, and your dreams finally came true. You were now, officially, an Avenger.
You moved into the compound just a couple days ago, and you had just been following Steve around every day, learning how things worked around here. You were taken on (several) tours of the tower, but you were still lost every time you walked around. You sat in on meetings and started doing your own solo workouts that Steve gave you in the afternoons.
Everyone was really nice and helpful, and you had officially met everyone. Except one person.
Bucky had been on a solo mission for the past week, and he was supposed to be coming back the next day, probably in the afternoon. The others had warned you about him – his staring, his brooding, how grumpy he was – so you were a little nervous to meet him. But you didn’t have to worry about that until tomorrow.
Because you didn’t have to get up early to train with the others, you stayed up late, watching a movie. You had chosen a horror movie tonight, so you were sitting on the couch, blanket wrapped around your shoulders, knees pulled up to your chest, hands just below your eyes, ready to cover them at any moment.
Suddenly, you heard the elevator door ding, causing you to jump.
You quickly paused the movie, listening closely since you couldn’t see the elevator door from the couch. It was just off the kitchen, and you heard heavy footsteps walking down the hall in the opposite direction of the kitchen, towards the…well you actually didn’t remember what was down that way.
You quickly got up and crept into the kitchen. You slowly walked in, eyes trained on the doorway to the hall they had just walked down. You glanced at the clock on the oven, realizing it was almost 1:30 am.
You looked back at the hallway, slowly reaching to grab a knife off the stand on the counter. You slowly made your way to the doorway, holding the knife out in front of you…only to realize it wasn’t a knife.
You had grabbed a spatula.
You rolled your eyes at yourself, arms dropping to your sides. You turned back around to switch the spatula out with a knife, when you heard the footsteps again, approaching the kitchen.
You quickly turned back around and quietly ran to the doorway. A spatula would have to do.
The second they took a step into the kitchen, you jumped out in front of them, spatula inches away from their face.
A metal arm grabbed your wrist, and you realized who it was. “Bucky?”
He moved your hand out of his face so he could see yours. “And you must be y/n,” he said, letting go of your wrist.
You dropped your arm, taking a step back. “Sorry, I thought you were breaking in.”
“And a spatula was your weapon of choice?”
You sighed, hoping he hadn’t noticed. “I meant to grab a knife,” you mumbled, walking back into the kitchen.
You walked back to the counter, returning the spatula where you found it, as he followed behind you. When you turned around, the security light in the kitchen cast a faint glow over his features.
He was a lot more handsome in person.
His dark hair was a little longer than you expected, still slightly damp from the cold night air, and it curled gently at the ends near his jaw. His features were sharp but softened by the tiredness in his eyes – eyes that were a piercing blue, almost too intense to hold eye contact with for too long. He had a faint stubble along his jaw, his jawline sharp. And, of course, there was the arm – the metal catching the low light as he leaned casually against the counter, like grabbing strangers wielding spatulas in the dark was totally normal.
But as you were taking him in, you didn’t notice he was doing the same to you.
His eyes flicked over your face, lingering on the way your long hair spilled over your shoulders, slightly tousled from where it had been tucked into your blanket. The blanket was still wrapped around you, though it had fallen open in the front, revealing an oversized sweatshirt hanging off one shoulder and a pair of shorts that barely peeked out beneath the hem. His gaze dropped briefly to your legs – long, toned, and bare – before catching sight of your feet, completely barefoot against the cool tile floor.
You didn’t say anything, too distracted by the way he was looking at you – brows slightly raised, almost curious, like he hadn’t expected you to look quite like this.
“Not exactly the warm welcome I expected,” he said, his voice a little rough, eyes finally meeting yours again.
“Well maybe you shouldn’t scare me next time,” you said, crossing your arms. “Or maybe I shouldn’t keep watching horror movies alone.”
He just chuckled as he looked down, shaking his head.
“I didn’t think you were supposed to be back until tomorrow?” you asked, leaning against the counter behind you.
“I finished earlier than I thought, decided to drive straight back instead of stopping somewhere.”
You just nodded in response, looking away awkwardly, not sure what to say now.
“Why are you up so late?” he asked, raising an eyebrow at you.
“Oh, I’ve been doing my own workouts that Steve gives me in the afternoon, so I can sleep in since I don’t have to train with them in the morning.”
Bucky nodded slowly, then tilted his head. “So instead of sleeping, you decided to scare the hell out of yourself with a horror movie?”
You gave him a look. “It’s called self-care.”
He smirked, arms crossing over his chest. “Interesting definition.”
“I like the adrenaline rush,” you defended, though your voice betrayed the slight tremble from earlier. “And I was doing just fine until you showed up like some kind of horror movie final boss.”
That made him laugh – actually laugh – and you were a little stunned by how much softer he looked when he did. Like there was no way he used to be the Winter Soldier.
“You really thought someone was breaking in?” he asked, clearly still amused.
You gave him a dry look. “At 1:30 in the morning? With heavy footsteps? Yeah, I panicked.”
“And went for a spatula.”
“Okay, we’re not gonna keep bringing that up. I thought I grabbed a knife.”
He just grinned, leaning one hip against the counter. “Can’t promise that.”
You rolled your eyes and shook your head, but there was a smile tugging at your lips. “You’re not as scary as everyone made you sound, you know.”
“Oh, just you wait,” he said, giving you a dramatic deadpan look. “I haven’t even glared at you yet.”
You snorted. “Is that supposed to be a threat?”
“Depends. Are you gonna throw any more kitchen utensils at me?”
“Only if you sneak up on me again.”
There was a beat of silence as the banter settled, and you both just looked at each other. His expression was thoughtful, eyes roaming over your face again, more curious than anything.
“You’re different than I expected,” he said quietly.
You raised an eyebrow. “Different how?”
He shrugged, pushing off the counter and heading toward the fridge. “You’re not intimidated.”
“I waved a spatula at your face. That’s practically a dominance display.”
Bucky chuckled again, pulling open the fridge and grabbing a bottle of water. “Alright, new rule. No more horror movies alone. At least not without a real weapon nearby.”
You leaned your head back against the cabinets, giving him a playful smile. “So what, are you volunteering to be my horror movie buddy?”
He twisted the cap off the water and took a sip, eyeing you over the top of the bottle. “Only if there’s popcorn.”
You grinned, but before you could reply, he yawned – big and unfiltered, catching him off guard enough that he blinked a few times afterward and rubbed at his eyes.
“Long drive?” you asked, voice softening a little.
He nodded. “Yeah. I’ve been up for…way too many hours.”
“Well, I’m glad you’re back safe,” you said, gently pushing off the counter. “And sorry about the spatula. For real.”
“No permanent damage,” he said with a small smile, and that same curious look passed through his eyes again. “Goodnight, y/n.”
You returned the smile, a little warmer this time. “Goodnight, Bucky.”
He lingered for a second like he might say something else, but instead, he gave you a quiet nod and walked off down the hallway, water bottle in hand, metal arm catching the light one last time before disappearing around the corner.
You exhaled slowly, finally letting your shoulders drop. Then you glanced down at the spatula still sitting on the counter and shook your head.
“Welcome to the team,” you muttered to yourself, turning back toward the couch.
--
The next morning when you woke up, your stomach was growling.
You went to the bathroom and quickly ran a brush through your hair before washing your face, but you didn’t bother getting dressed before you walked to the kitchen.
As you padded into the kitchen, still in the sweatshirt and shorts from last night, all the other Avengers were in there, either eating, making breakfast, or just talking – including Bucky.
Nat was the first to notice you. “Morning, y/n.”
“Morning,” you mumbled, rubbing the sleep from your eyes. A few others smiled or nodded good morning as you made your way to the fridge, trying to decide what you wanted to eat.
Bucky stood in front of the open fridge, grabbing eggs from the carton.
“Morning, Bucky,” you said, sticking your head under his arm to look in the fridge.
Everyone else just watched silently, waiting to see what Bucky would do. They had no idea you had already met, and they knew he hated being talked to or approached in the morning, so they were a little worried.
“Morning, y/n. Want me to make you eggs too?”
You just hummed, still crouching under his arm, surveying the fruit options in the fridge. “Yeah, that sounds good,” you replied, ducking under his arm and taking a step back.
He grabbed a few more eggs as you turned around, noticing everyone staring at you two, some with their mouths hanging open.
“What?” you said, eyebrows knit together in confusion.
Sam was the first to break. “Wait, he offered to make you breakfast?”
You blinked, looking between them. “Yeah…?”
Steve narrowed his eyes at Bucky. “Since when do you cook for anyone?”
Bucky just shrugged, cracking the eggs into a pan like it was no big deal. “She threatened me with a spatula last night. It felt only fair.”
There was a beat of silence – and then a collective explosion of laughter.
“You – wait, what?” Sam leaned forward, nearly choking on his coffee. “She pulled a spatula on you?”
You felt your face go red instantly. “I thought someone was breaking in! It was dark, I panicked!”
Tony set his mug down with a dramatic shake of his head. “And this is who we’re trusting to help save the world?”
You narrowed your eyes at him. “It was either a spatula or a loaf of bread, Stark. I made a call.”
Nat laughed into her coffee, clearly enjoying this way too much. “So let me get this straight – you startled her, she tried to Spatula America you, and instead of being grumpy and scary like usual, you made her breakfast?”
Bucky smirked but kept his eyes on the pan. “She had good form. Almost smacked me in the face with it.”
Clint leaned back in his chair with a grin. “Wow. And here I thought you didn’t like anyone who made eye contact before noon.”
Bruce, sitting with a smoothie, tilted his head thoughtfully. “You seem…oddly chill right now.”
Bucky glanced at you out of the corner of his eye. “Maybe I like being threatened by kitchen utensils.”
That got a second round of laughter, even from Steve – who was now studying Bucky like he was trying to solve an equation.
You were still standing there, completely thrown by how casually he was acting. He wasn’t snapping, or glaring, or giving anyone his signature “don’t talk to me” vibe. He was just…cooking eggs. For you.
Tony leaned toward Nat and whispered – not quietly enough – “ten bucks says they’re secretly dating already.”
You shot him a look. “I can hear you.”
He raised both hands. “I’m just saying! This is the calmest I’ve ever seen Barnes and the first time I’ve seen you voluntarily in the kitchen before noon. Something is definitely going on.”
Bucky just shook his head, flipping the eggs effortlessly. “Maybe I’m just in a good mood.”
You looked at him, one brow raised. “Because of the spatula incident?”
He didn’t look up, but there was a small smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Maybe.”
You shook your head, still trying to process the fact that you had been the one to somehow get through Bucky Barnes' grumpy morning shield.
You wandered over to the kitchen island and sank down onto one of the barstools, pulling your legs up to sit cross-legged on the seat, your oversized sweatshirt sliding down one shoulder. Nat slid onto the stool next to you, still grinning, while Sam leaned his elbows on the counter across from you, like he was watching a soap opera unfold in real time.
“So,” Nat said casually, “how exactly did we get to ‘good morning’ and ‘I’ll make you eggs’ from ‘grumpy murder stare’ Barnes?”
You groaned softly. “Guys, it’s not that deep. We just…met last night. Accidentally. Kind of.”
Sam raised an eyebrow. “With a spatula.”
“Okay, yes, with a spatula,” you said, laughing despite yourself. “It was dark. I was scared. Let it go.”
“You waved a pancake flipper at a trained assassin and now he’s making you breakfast,” Sam said, straight-faced. “This is a rom-com and I did not get a script.”
As you laughed and bickered with them, you didn’t notice Bucky finishing up at the stove behind you. He didn’t say anything – just quietly plated the eggs, grabbed a fork, and set the plate down in front of you on the island, right in the middle of your sentence.
You blinked, caught off guard. “Oh – thanks.”
“You’re welcome,” he said simply, then returned to the stove to make his own plate.
The room went dead silent for a split second before—
“Ohhh my god,” Sam groaned dramatically, flopping onto the counter. “He cooked for her and served it to her? He’s down bad.”
Clint pointed a spoon toward Bucky. “We’re witnessing history. This is like…the Bucky Barnes Soft Launch.”
Tony mimed typing on a phone. “Hold on, I’m live-tweeting this. ‘Winter Soldier melts down from weaponized spatula and domestic bonding.’”
You gave them all a look and muttered, “He literally just made me eggs.”
Nat leaned in close, grinning. “He served you eggs. There’s a difference.”
“I’m right here,” Bucky called without looking up, though there was a faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth as he dished up his own food.
“And yet,” Tony said, grinning as he sipped his coffee, “you’re not denying it.”
You shot Bucky a look, and he just shrugged, bringing his plate to the other end of the island and sitting down like none of this chaos concerned him at all. But when you looked again, his gaze flicked up to meet yours, and he gave you the tiniest wink.
You looked back down at your plate, cheeks warm. Yep. You were definitely in a rom-com.
You dug into the eggs—honestly, they were really good—and the conversation drifted to something else entirely. Nat was telling a story about a disastrous undercover mission that involved a lot of goats, and you were halfway through laughing at Sam’s horrified expression when you realized your plate was gone.
You blinked down at the empty space in front of you, then looked up to see Bucky at the sink, rinsing your plate and his like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Sam noticed at the same time you did. He froze mid-sip of his orange juice, slowly lowering the glass with wide eyes. “Oh my god.”
Nat turned around in her seat, catching sight of Bucky calmly scrubbing dishes. “No. No way.”
“He’s doing her dishes,” Sam said, turning to Nat like he needed a witness. “He’s washing her plate. Voluntarily.”
You blinked. “I – he didn’t have to do that–”
“Are you two already married or just emotionally bonded for life?” Tony called from the other side of the room, tossing a grape into his mouth.
Wanda, walking into the kitchen with a bagel, stopped dead in her tracks. “What’d I miss?”
“Barnes just cleared her plate and started washing it,” Sam said like he was reporting breaking news.
Wanda raised an eyebrow. “...did she save his life or something?”
“I threatened him with a spatula,” you mumbled into your coffee.
Bucky, still facing the sink, didn’t even turn around. “You’re never gonna live that down.”
“Not if we have anything to say about it,” Nat said cheerfully.
You gave Bucky a look. “You didn’t have to clean up for me, you know.”
He glanced back over his shoulder. “I know.”
“Oh my god,” Sam groaned, dropping his head to the counter. “He knows.”
Tony pointed between the two of you like he was tracking a conspiracy. “So we’ve got: late night meeting, cooking, casual touch proximity, washing her dishes–”
“Next thing you know, he’s folding her laundry and building her a bookshelf,” Clint added.
“Okay, I draw the line at laundry,” Bucky said, finally turning around with a half-smile.
“You didn’t deny the bookshelf, though,” you teased, arching an eyebrow.
That got a low laugh out of him. “Depends. Do you have books?”
You opened your mouth, then shut it, realizing you did. Like, a lot.
Sam made a strangled noise. “Oh no. Oh no no no. This man is gone. G-O-N-E, gone.”
You couldn’t help it – you laughed, hard, burying your face in your hands.
And through it all, Bucky just leaned against the counter with his arms crossed, watching you with a quiet kind of amusement, like he didn’t even mind being the center of the chaos. In fact…he looked like he kind of liked it.
As the others continued joking and speculating about your supposed domestic takeover, you leaned your chin on your hand, watching Bucky from across the kitchen.
You weren’t sure what it was exactly – maybe the fact that you didn’t tiptoe around him like everyone else, or maybe it was just timing – but somehow, you'd slipped past a few of the walls everyone warned you about.
He caught you looking and gave you a small, knowing smile, like he could read your thoughts. You looked away quickly, but couldn’t fight the quiet little grin tugging at your lips.
You weren’t sure how you’d managed to crack through Bucky Barnes’ armor with a spatula and a pair of sleep shorts, but...maybe you wanted to find out what else you could break through.
Maybe this was just the beginning.

Every Part of You
Pairing - Grumpy!Bucky Barnes x Sunshine!Reader A.N. - Alright, I've been asked to write about Bucky and Sunshine's first time many, many times. And the thing is, like sure, I could write that, but also I want us to take a moment to consider trying to build up to that. There's so many firsts buried in there that I think need to be navigated through before they even get there. This is one of those firsts. Like the first time you see Bucky's shoulder.

"You're just- " You stop speaking, searching for his lips again. Though you're breathless, you can't bring yourself to pull away from him, "You're so pretty."
You shudder as you feel his hand slip under your sweater. The occasional graze of the cool metal on your skin enough to send shivers down your spine.
His lips trail down, nipping at your jaw, "I'm not pretty."
Your hands, winded in the hair at the nape of his neck, glide down his neck, to clutch the fabric of his henley. The moment he feels your fingers toy with the collar of his shirt, his heart hammers against his ribcage. Not in the sort of way that he usually feels in these moments with you. He feels a sense of dread, of panic. It wraps around his spine like a python. It feels like he can't breathe.
"You're so -"
He wrenches away from you, his chest heaving, "Stop, stop, stop."
You freeze, immediately dropping your hands. Panic starts creeping up your throat, coating your words. "Did I - did I do something wrong?"
He gulps, silently shaking his head. It takes him a moment to regain his composure, to regain the ability to speak clearly, "No, no, you're - you're perfect."
Guilt starts to eat at him. He can see you doing your very best to keep your own feelings off your face. He can see the sting of his rejection in the way your lips press together in a tight line. The embarrassment in the pallor of your once flushed cheeks.
You two have worked so hard to overcome your own personal issues and traumas, to build trust in each other, moments like these hadn't come easy. And he so callously pushed you away, it makes him feel worse. And what makes his heart ache even more, he sees nothing but concern for him shining in your eyes. You just look so worried for him.
Your hands rest in your lap. You twist and untwist your fingers. "If you don't want to, we don't - we don't have to do anything. I'm really sorry -"
"No, no, please don't be sorry." He reaches for you, gently squeezing your hand. It soothes him as much as it does you. "I want to. You don't know how much I want to."
"But?"
His eyes squeeze shut. He can't bring himself to meet your eyes. "You haven't seen it before - my arm, my shoulder."
"Oh."
He drops your hand. That feeling takes over him again. It feels like there's not enough air in the room. He slides away from you, closer to the edge of the tiny couch in your apartment. "It's - I am not pretty."
It breaks your heart, watching him pull away from you. You can only imagine how many people have turned away from him before. "James..."
He fervently shakes his head, refusing to open his eyes, "No, no, I know what you're gonna say, but it's bad. A lot worse than you're thinking."
"How do you know what I'm thinking?"
"It's bad," he insists. "I see it every day and I can barely - it's just bad, okay?"
You take his hand, squeezing it tightly. "It's okay if you don't want me to see it. I understand."
He finally opens his eyes again as his eyebrows pull together. He still doesn't meet your eye. "No, no, I want to - I trust you with this, I do. I just - I want you to be prepared."
In that moment, you realize that it's not really about preparing you. Not at all.
He thinks you're going to react badly. He thinks that this will make you turn away from him for the first time ever. He's worried that the love and adoration in your eyes will turn to disgust and repulsion.
It's less about preparing you for the scarred flesh, and more about warning you that he couldn't take a bad reaction. He's not sure he could take it if you turned away from him too.
"I love you," you promise him. "There's nothing that you could show me that would change that. I hope you know that."
There is no response to that. And you know that he won't believe it until he sees it. It takes him a moment. His hand toys with the hem of his shirt. His hand grips the hem, only to let it go.
"I love you," you remind him.
He takes a large gulp of air, pulling off his shirt with one quick movement.
You weren't really sure what you were expecting. You knew the story. You knew how Bucky lost his arm. He even confided the bits and pieces he remembered from getting his vibranium arm.
Your eyes trail over his skin. The shoulder is scarred, scars jut in every direction. Each scar is etched into his skin. It's clear it was a painful, violent experience for him. The metal plate protrudes from the scar tissue in a way that you're sure was painful when first placed. You look on with curiosity, you're not really sure how this, a sign of survival, a badge of resilience, could ever make anyone turn away from him.
He's as breathtaking as you could ever imagine.
Your eyes flicker up at him. He looks at the blank wall of your apartment, scared to watch your facial expressions as you take it in. "Can I?"
He nods, barely able to look you in the eyes. He sucks in a breath when your fingers make contact with the scar tissue surrounding the metal plate.
You immediately pull your fingers back, worried you've accidentally hurt him. "Does it hurt?"
"No," he answers reflexively.
You know he's lying. "I've seen you holding your shoulder before - holding it like it hurts."
"Sometimes," he amends. "The doctor said there's a lot of nerve damage. Things they can't fix."
"Does it hurt now?"
"No."
You run your hand over the plate, over his scars, down to his shoulder blade.
"Still think I'm pretty?" he sarcastically remarks.
You press a gentle kiss to his bare shoulder. "I'll always think you're pretty. Every part of you."

Warnings: Fluff, cheeky moments, awkwardness, sarcasm, a little romantic tension, Bucky being a soft dom (manhandling and praise), affectionate teasing
Author’s Note: Thank you for the request, babe! This was such a cute idea, I hope it was to your liking. It was originally going to be a short blurb, but I made it into a mall day! @ghostlyfleur <3

It was supposed to be a peaceful day off for the Avengers. The sun was out, the mall was bustling, and for once, everyone had agreed to take a break from saving the world.
But for Bucky Barnes, the day was already feeling like a test of patience.
He wasn’t exactly thrilled about the idea of a crowded mall. The noise, the chaos, the shiny stores full of overpriced trinkets. It just wasn’t his scene.
But you were you. And he would do anything for you.
And with no match against you and your little smile, you dragged him around the mall for the past hour like a hyperactive puppy.
You were practically bouncing with excitement as you skipped from one shop to the next, and Bucky, despite his grumbles and sighs, was always just a step behind you, keeping a close eye on you.
“Bucky, come on!” you said, turning back with your bright, infectious smile. “Hurry up! We’re gonna miss all the fun!”
“I’m here to make sure you don’t get yourself killed in a mall,” Bucky grumbled, his voice low but fond.
You shot him a grin. “That’s why I came with you, big guy.”
He rolled his eyes but didn’t argue, letting you pull him along.
You had this way of getting under his skin, making him smile even when he was trying to stay grumpy.
Just as you were about to break into a sprint to your favorite store, you tripped over your own feet.
Instinctively, Bucky’s hand shot out to catch you, pulling you against his chest.
“Careful, sunshine,” he muttered, his voice unusually soft. His hand lingered at your waist for a moment longer than necessary, his thumb brushing over the fabric of your jacket. “One of these days, I’m gonna need to wrap you in bubble wrap.”
“Thanks for the rescue, grumpy bear.” You giggled and straightened up, swatting his arm lightly. “But I’m fine!”
“I’ll be the judge of that,” Bucky grumbled, but there was a hint of amusement in his tone. His eyes narrowed, and he scanned the crowd around you both. He was always on high alert, always protecting you.
As if on cue, your attention shifted to something else. You spotted it: the photo booth.
Bright lights flashing in the window, cute little props hanging around. Without even asking, you grabbed his hand.
He let out a sigh, but let you drag him across the mall.
“Really? A photo booth?” he asked, though the annoyance in his voice was half-hearted. You looked up at him, with those stupid doe eyes.
“Please, Buck, pleeeease! You owe me after almost letting me faceplant!” you grinned as you tugged him along with you.
"I didn't almost let you faceplant," he grumbled, "I saved you."
"That’s the spirit!" you beamed.
Bucky grumbled a string of curses under his breath.
“You’re going in, grumpy!” you said with a grin, “There’s no way you’re getting out of this. It’s for us.”
Bucky sighed. “I’m too big for this. You know that, right?”
“Too big for fun?” you teased. “I don’t think so!”
There was no fighting it.
Bucky wanted to put his foot down, but with how you smiled up at him, he could never refuse you.
He ducked into the booth, his broad shoulders hunched, trying not to take up the entire space. There was barely enough room for both of you, so Bucky did the only reasonable thing to do: he picked you up effortlessly and plopped you onto his lap.
"Bucky!"
He pulled you in tighter. "You wanted the pictures, brat. You’re stuck with me now."
“Alright, let’s take some pictures,” you said, playing around with props and making silly faces until Bucky begrudgingly joined in, his grumpiness melting as he went along with it.
Bucky reached over with one massive hand and squished your cheeks together, a smirk on his face. "Like this, sunshine?"
“Bucky! Stop it!” you giggle under his gentle touch.
He chuckled, squeezing your cheeks once more before he put on enormous, goofy glasses and scowled for the next picture.
“There, happy now?” he grumbled, his tone completely at odds with the ridiculous glasses.
“Oh, totally!” you said with a giggle. “You look adorable.”
Bucky’s eyes narrowed, though you could see the corners of his mouth twitching. “Don’t go telling anyone that, okay?”
“Of course not!” you assured him with a grin. “I’m not that mean.”
"And now, a kiss on the cheek," he said with an air of mock seriousness, before planting a quick kiss on your cheek.
You felt your face flush.
"Bucky!" you said, your voice suddenly quieter, though your smile betrayed how giddy you were.
He raised an eyebrow. “What? I’m a gentleman. Sometimes.”
Your face flushed a deeper shade of red.
The booth’s final picture snapped. Bucky leaned his cheek against your head and you both smiled.
He pressed a chaste kiss against your temple before he helped you out.
When the photos were printed, you couldn’t hide your grin as you handed one set to Bucky.
“Great,” he muttered. “This is gonna haunt me for the rest of my life, isn’t it?”
You practically beamed. “Yep! And I’m showing the team.”
Bucky narrowed his eyes. “You’re not.”
“I will!” you declared, undeterred.
Bucky tilted your chin to look at him with just the right amount of force. His thumb gently traced your skin, a subtle reminder of who was in control. “You won’t.”
“Yes, I will,” you insisted, although your voice got softer.
“No, you won’t.” His thumb traces against your cheek, almost like he was grounding you, pulling you closer into submission. “Right, sweet girl?”
“I won’t,” You agreed and held up your pinky. “Pinky promise.”
“Good girl,” he praised, hooking his pinky around yours.
You remained quiet until a small smile creeped up on your face. “You’re totally going to keep the pictures forever and ever.”
He sighed again, looking down at you with both exasperation and fondness. “I’m never gonna hear the end of this, am I?”
“Not unless you really pout,” you teased, poking his side gently. “Which I’m kind of hoping you do.”
“Now I understand why the others like to pick on you,” Bucky muttered.
You pout playfully and he ruffles your hair gently.
You smiled, and when you turned around, you spotted the cotton candy machine.
Without hesitation, you bolted toward it, yelling, "Cotton candy, Buck! Let’s get some!"
“I swear to God…” Bucky sighed, watching you go with a fond smile that he couldn’t hide.
The only thing worse than being dragged to a photo booth was following you to a cotton candy machine, knowing you'd get even more hyper off the sugar.
Was he still going to buy it for you?
Yes.
Why?
Because, like always, he was helpless against his sunshine.
"Can’t take you anywhere," he grinned as he followed after you.
No matter how grumpy he tried to be, when it came to you, Bucky Barnes was completely powerless.
