notes: i did not make a whole new interpretive model for this deck, apologies, that was outside of my scope. it's generally compatible with a Rider-Waite model, with Motorics for Wands, Psyche for Cups, Physique for Swords, and Intellect for Disks. (full distribution of text listed by card, linked below. any spelling or transcription errors you find there, i promise i fixed them in print—that's copied from my digital mockup which was copied hastily from screenshots.)

i also do not track hours on these kinds of projects because that way lies madness, but i will say: i knew how much time it would take to print it. it was a lot but i was not worried about it, i know how to print. i was very worried about how much time it would take to absorb the sheer amount of text, and distribute it across the cards, and really get an array i believe in. i was right to worry, and i have absolutely had a few anxious nightmares about discovering the Perfect excerpt that should've gone in and i missed it, and the suit of Intellect made me want to lay on the floor a few times, but still! i believe there's many versions of a deck you could make from this game and this one is a good one.

i think the Minors fit really well with the double-edged sword of Harry's skills, their advice, their priorities. the circular way the Fool-World assignment works out makes me smile every time. The colors on The Star came out so nice. i think Justice fulfills some of my favorite things about Kim's character & purpose in the story. i worried sometimes that editing to such short clips would lose too much of the politics of the game, but of course you can't really take them out and they're especially present in the Majors—the Devil and the Hierophant, The Star and The Sun. i've wanted to design a tarot deck for years and i love this game deeply and i let this idea percolate for a few months and it never stopped making me laugh so here it is, & given a beautiful purpose :)

i also literally could not have done this without xyrilin's Disco Reader and the FAYDE On-Air Playback Experiment to navigate the dialogue and skill checks. Really couldn’t have tied the whole concept & colophon in its final bow without the Disco Reader :)) thank thank thank, they're so fun to investigate that it was honestly very difficult to focus on my task instead of veering off and exploring every branch in an extremely disorganized way.

actual printing went well honestly, very few problems! i think that means i'm getting pretty good at planning one of these monstrosities, although perhaps it also means i'm not challenging myself enough. hmm. no that's silly there's 78 ding dang cards in this thing. anyway the drop & replace formes worked well, no registration issues. mum convinced me to overprint another half a deck's worth of cards when I was printing backs & borders and of course she was right :/ there were a handful of cards that actually had better line breaks and fewer lines total in true type than in the digital mockup, so i needed all the spares I had to put those new short quotes into the appropriate border breakage. next time i will not question her.

Nuclear hot take on a possible motive for the Lund sisters. We know what they did (erase themselves from history) and we know they wanted to do it (they knew where they'd end up and were looking forward for Zigi to join them there eventually), but why?

It starts from the infamous "Luiga says that he and Kurvitz say that a certain forum post is is correct in positing that Dora is, somehow and to some degree, actually Dolores Dei herself". Specifically, the post says that there was a human Dora who was overtaken by something like an archetype and lost herself into being Dolores Dei.

As a secondary premise, it is possible that Noid was literally right when he suspected Dolores Dei in particular of being somehow not entirely human, an immortal of some kind: in the final dream, she mentions the something or something else of immortality, crown scepter and thingamajig that were "passed onto her by the rulers of late antiquity". She just might have already been around in Perikarnassis' time, before the isolas split. Like, separate from the Dora thing, the game tells us that Dolores Dei was chummy with the rulers of late antiquity, a good few thousand years before her historical relevance.

My impression is that this same... potential for being Dolores Dei... ...somehow... is shared by the Lund girls. Source:

similar if not outright same surname (after all, Jean lampshades twice that he's not sure about Ingerlund being Dora's surname, in a way that may hint at some upcoming twist),

the whole peaches of immortality detour (I'll leave the specifics to Estonian speakers but I'm told it's functionally the same as Dora's apricots, to the point that an older pdf had a stray "apricot" instead of peach)

and, most importantly, Zigi's omen of destruction as he meets Charlotte. She's flat out described as having footsteps that spelled the destruction of Iilmaraa, which just so happens to be where Perikarnassis was, bundled with its rulers of late antiquity (I can do the geographical conspiracy board on a separate post if anyone's interested).

I think that Dora meeting Harry and Charlotte meeting Zigi is the beginning of the same story, one that may have been repeating since antiquity if we take this literally as well. Harry and Zigi, too, famously share an archetype of sorts, by virtue of being overt, straightforward Kurvitz expys. We even have the same emphasis on their cool leather jackets. For the middle class girls, this contact outside their gilded world sparks change. But here is where their stories diverge: Dora eventually rejects this change and falls into the comfort of being bourgeoisie incarnate. The Lund sisters, on the other hand, emphatically go "fuck all y'all" and choose to annihilate themselves.

Sooo, based on these totally solid premises that aren't a stretch in any way whatsoever (source: my beautiful mind, also it was revealed to me in a dream, and also fayde dot co dot uk), here's the take:

By virtue of this parallel between them and Dora, I think it's... not completely impossible... that it was precisely this aspect of themselves that they tried to annihilate, maybe subconsciously. A potential they felt was so wrong that they tried to erase it from history entirely, just walking into the pale wouldn't have been enough, it needed to be scrubbed at its root.

how do you go about writing all of the police/detective stuff? I have no knowledge at all about that except having played the game a few times and watching bbc sherlock back when that was a thing.

This isn't my favourite thing to discuss online as it can trigger my psychosis, but I have an actual dismaying amount of experience with cops. I don't want to talk about it but... Bit like Cuno I suppose. Good ending for that kid is doing public services training ages 14 - 16, and going "oh this is shit actually" once he's got an out from his abusive parent, then working at a restaurant

I quite literally cannot go into detail - so don't ask because I WILL delete this post - but an ex military police officer told us a "funny story" about a "prank" he played on some kids in an occupied location during the late 80s that I recognised as psychological torture, but made my peers laugh. So I decided to become a faggot and poet instead.

Research:

Honestly, the amount of time I spend looking up stuff for writing is probably more than the time I spend writing. The internet's being fucked by SEO but it's a start. Like... There's plenty of info out there written on the police and their role in systematic oppression, I'm pretty sure there's free PDFs floating around on Tumblr actually...

If it's more "day in the life" I honestly don't know. Maybe reddit or if there's one of those "Ex-[blank} reviews [blank] in movies" videos on Youtube for cops, but obviously take everything said with a pinch of salt.

FAYDE:

Fayde is the best tool at your disposal. We bully Kim a lot for his dedication to the RCM but that makes finding out info pretty easy. EDC too! I've never played with high EDC so just typing in key words (especially names of other officers to try and get character info) and scrolling through is helpful.

Good keywords are "precinct", "RCM", "Militicia" as they'll bring up opinions/ info from other characters.

The RCM is not a traditional police force:

I would worry less about accuracy and more about being interesting. It doesn't need to be a perfect representation of police work since the canon makes a point of there being a distinction in the powers and roles of the RCM. Go listen to the collapsing tenement cut content. You don't need to write about them filling in forms if it's not relevant. It'll show in your writing if you're unsure/ bored.

Make them worse:

If you're going to write one of the officers doing something shitty (yes, that includes Kim and Harry) but worry that you've gone too far then I promise you haven't. Dickheads are drawn to positions of power and the impunity it gives them. There's a reason I wrote one of the 57's officers as a groomer.

Make them less competent:

Don't trust the police, but also don't expect anything of them.

As recently as Monday I had to call for the fire brigade because a lit (thankfully poorly made) petrol bomb had been left under a neighbour's car (I live an irritatingly interesting life for somebody who lives in the middle of fucking nowhere) nobody was harmed. Cop came to find me afterwards to get an interview from me since I'd spotted it and he told me, I kid you not, "Yeah, we're not gonna do anything unless anything else happens." Like, I expected as much but I wasn't expecting him to up and fucking say that. You're welcome for 85% of my council tax, you fucking moron.

Harry's a special case because he's, like, psychic and got "maybe if I solve *THIS* one my wife will let me sleep in the big bed" disorder, and nobody wants to read a case fic that they... don't solve (or do they..? *winks*) But if you care about realism you need dick-in-hand dipshits. Another favourite quote of mine from an officer two years back; "Is 'right wing' the good one or the bad one?" So the advice here is you're writing a cop well if you're reading it and thinking: holy shit please just go work at a TESCOs instead.

Don't worry so much:

You should write, first and foremost, for yourself. I like detective fiction, I have wasted an unfortunate amount of my life dealing with police due to my job and shit childhood. (I did originally write far more about this, but frankly it's better for myself if I don't bother. That's why it's taken me five days to answer this)

I've read/ watched a lot of detective fiction and I'm always more drawn to stuff that is less based in police work. Private investigators, investigative journalists, kid detectives like Nancy Drew, ect.

In particular my favourite book, perhaps of all time, is called Hideaway by Dean Koontz and is two fathers (one: the killer's father - a talented doctor who brought his shithead son back to life - and another, the doctor's most recent patient to be brought back from the brink who has developed a psychic link with the killer as a result) trying to stop him, but never actually meeting! It's one hell of a read if you need inspo.

Val McDermott is a good author for crime writing with less police input, too. She has a book called Killing The Shadows which is excellent. The Killer's motive is taking out crime writers who've romanticised psychological profilers after he was wrongly convicted. Fair enough! Until he starts... Killing about it? Sort of defeats the message... Anyway, what's fun about this book is that before each crime writer is killed (in the same way they wrote THEIR killers killing!! Love that) you get to read the first chapter of each writer's most famous work. So you are essentially getting six crime books in one (first chapter of at least) ...Also the main character's husband is a crime writer called Kit, which I've only remembered just double checking the book name now. Lol???

...This is just turning into me recommending books.

so i've been reading through the last scene in disco elysium on the fayde playback experiment and i took the ending with cuno, since i haven't gotten that in the game (can't bear failing kim). i chose to ask to make him a junior officer. and when you're asking the three of them, there's this exchange:

cuno stops referring to himself in the third person. he's so desperate to have somewhere to be, to get out of martinaise. he will probably die if he stays in martinaise. his dad is pretty much gone, and his best and only friend is too. this is also possibly a side effect of withdrawal from speed plus whatever else he's gotten hold of- cuno is under a ridiculous amount of stress in this moment. he's a 12 year old boy withdrawing from hard drugs watching the future of his life being decided in front of him. i feel like this moment is overlooked since a lot of people never get this ending

there's that empathy check earlier in the game that tells you that cuno uses the third person as a shield, distancing himself from his own situation. is cuno's departure from that his attempt to appeal to adult/polite society? i'm tempted to see it as the end of some kind of arc for cuno but i know that's too easy. his journey is so far from over. he has, however, somehow come down to earth imo. i remember seeing someone referring to his use of the third person as a form of dissociation and that is so accurate to my reading. he's so desperate to get out of this place (physically and mentally) that he lets go of this coping mechanism, even if just for a moment and i think that is so important and i know a sequel, if it happens, is basicall void of meaning but god i wish i had more material on what happens to this little rascal sorry this is such a mess i know no one follows this blog but i need an outlet

so when i first started playing disco i was in a v weird mental state where i was easily put on edge by everything (looking back that might have not been a good idea objectively lmao.. but i had fun w it) & bcus of that his portrait was SOOOO freaky to me at first like, i didn't wanna look at it LOL. also i thought his voice was annoying as hell before i got used to it & now it's weirdly grown on me (altho i also think garte's stupid nasally voice is kinda hot so that's probably just me having cringefail taste <3) the "fuck this guy 😑" to "fuck this guy 😏" pipeline is real.

Wolf and Shadow

TW: death; Stockholm syndrome if you think about it; normal twisted/dark fairytale themes; no happy ending

NOTE: I use 'Shadow' in place of prince because he's nothing like one. A royal, yes, but a good guy- not really.

Written in headcanon format because I don't really want to write it in a regular 'fairytale' format.

- Fayde lived alone way out in the woods, and since everyone in town avoided her because she was a wolf, it was easier to forage instead of trying to shop or trade. It was one of those times that she found herself far, far from the woods she knew.

- The problem is that she'd wandered into the royal family's woods, where no one is allowed unless invited, and she got caught by the Shadow. He took her to the palace, locked her away, sentenced to die... when he came to carry out said sentence though, he had... a proposition of sorts.

- In exchange for letting her live, Fayde would tell him a story. Each one she tells is another day she's spared. And even if there seemed to be absolutely no reason he would offer this (there was certainly nothing to benefit from), she accepted. Even imprisoned, another day alive was better than dead for trying to survive.

- Just like he said, every day the Shadow would come, and she would spin up some new story to tell. Even if they were little children's stories everyone had heard of, as long as she hadn't told it yet, it was accepted by him. Days turned into weeks, the Shadow would come right on time every day for the next tale she had for him.

- It was only a matter of time before there weren't anymore stories for Fayde could come up with though, and the day she came up with a blank, she knew it was time to die. And she's shaking and crying, who wouldn't freak out when they know what's coming?

- When the Shadow came like he had every other day though, and saw her, he asked why she greeted him like this?

- There are no more stories to tell, she knows what he's going to do now. Instead of killing her though... he takes her hand and pulls her up off the floor. Dries her face and takes her from the cell/tower she was in and into the palace. Washed and clothed and fed... once it's all been done, the Shadow takes her to the royal court.

- He wouldn't kill her- no, every day he would visit her, and with every story she told, he fell a little more in love. And he was hardly kind, but he would win her heart piece by piece just as she did, if she would let him...!

- And Fayde said yes. Despite everything, she accepted... it wasn't long before they were engaged. Everyone in the kingdom adored them; unfortunately... there was a good reason for that.

- That reason was the Shadow's older brother, the heir to the kingdom. A fowl, black-hearted beast (if he even had a soul) that brought misery and pain to anyone and anything around him. And when his country swarmed around his younger brother and his bride... it infuriated him.

- It was the day of the wedding, and any moment the church doors would be opened, Fayde would walk down that aisle and marry her prince... the brother killed her. Plunged a dagger into her heart in that moment. And he says to her: "If the people can't love me, then they shall have no one to love at all...!" Fayde collapses, the brother bursts through the church doors, sword in hand, stalking towards the Shadow...

- ... it's the final thing she sees before waking up in the Keeper's World...!

Fayde and the Shadow were the only ones meant to be in the story. The brother was never meant to be part of the fairytale. The Shadow was very much the villain as much as the prince, there was no one else needed. He didn't just destroy the Happily Ever After, he likely destroyed his entire kingdom the moment he changed the story. He murdered his brother and Fayde in front of hundreds- thousands?- of people in a rampage, probably killed anyone else who tried to stop him or was openly distraught... so everyone. The brother didn't come out alive either at the end of the day, and the country spiraled after.

... Well... that got longer than I expected

What on god’s name is taking the admins so long to come up some kind of useable additions to the coli or gameplay that isn’t “Click > Receive."  And don’t give me crap about "strategy” there is no strategy in this game. Go to forum, pick the build you want, set your stats and click > recieve > repeat. The only strategy is avoiding giving yourself carpal tunnel syndrome while grinding for treasure.

I play Stardew Valley, it’s a damn indie 10-bit pixel game and somehow it has managed to keep me so engaged that I’ve happily planned virtual growing seasons, RL weeks in advance, for more than 2 years.  And it’s, at its core, the most fucking repetitive grinding piece of crap game that I love.

1 guy, one SINGLE guy,  made the entire game by himself over 4 years.

And you’re telling me the FR team,  1)  who had a successful Kickstarter, 2) who have multiple paid coders, 3) who have multiple paid artists, 4) are rolling in constant gem and advertiser income money (because *I* haven’t forgotten that Akiri bought himself a house from the second year earnings of the game!) 5) Basically promised Adventure Mode “soon” after the game opened 6) and have had over 6 years yet still haven’t come up with a damned thing.  

And if they do come up with something, they’re so shit about taking the temperature of their player base I can already promise you it’s going to royally suck and fuck up everyone’s day (*cough*The Fucking Eyes*cough* The eyestraining, flow-breaking Coli Captchas*cough*The Fucking shitty apparel/gene art that has errors that have existed for literal YEARS!).

Or it’s going to be introduced and mean absolutely nothing in the overall game. Remember the FR world lore about the gods at war, went nowhere. The Shade, went nowhere (what Shade? he’s not even a thing except where it’s convenient [don’t give me that Gaoler lore crap, because that means that all our Clan dragons are totally contaminated by Shade, the dragons created by the Gods specifically to fight the Shade, are infected by Shade, what malware program do the gods run, Fuckin’ Windows Defender, jeeze?).  Remember the war we’re supposed to be having with the Beastclans, that evaporated.  What is dragon time even like for beastclan?  How do they even “drive out” dragons.  I kinda doubt a pointy stick would make Godzilla move, and that’s the level of weapons Beastclans have with out OP dragon clans. 

I mean there’s so many opportunities to flesh this stupid game out, but every time you turn around the admins just throw some last-minute crap together and don’t even have the sense to test it all first.  I still don’t understand how layering issues in apparel even happen.  Don’t they have to draw each article on? Wouldn’t they see there that they’re overlapping? Don’t they even bother to look at shit and do even a basic quality control before they press “Send” and inflict it on their golden geese. 

At this rate…. Though I’m starting to completely regret giving them KS backing (because my critter STILL hasn’t been made yet!) I bet if they ever do get an adventure mode thing.  It’s going to be some kind of new grindfest that adds all of 4 autogenerated textboxes, while fucking up everyone who might want to sell adventure loot by making it account locked or some crap like their plan for PVP.  

God, why don’t they just make some sort of pixel-based adventure game.  They make free adventure game makers for the lulz, just use one of those for something and reskin it afterwards. Or open your code up and let some of your actually talented players make all the features and QoL and game updates (that skin tester you blacklist, that item encyclopedia you hate so much, that other user that made an random outfit generator, Fayd’s Exalt Idea) that would actually put some flavor in this lukewarm wet fart you call a game.

(I actually feel a bit better for finally saying that. Now I’m off to go play more Stardew Valley, where the gathering system actually works.)

The Hunt

 A storm rumbled in the distance, howling a challenge to the peaceful night. A Dalish woman threaded her way through the forest below, heading towards the spidery lightning and angry clouds. Her hair was like black fire glistening in the moonlight, and the trees parted as if she were their goddess. Maybe she was in some forgotten part of herself, but tonight wasn’t about idle musings, it was about the moment. It was about the hunt. Over the last three years, she had followed every rumor, chased every clue, all to no avail. The Wolf who’d stolen her heart, and her arm, had simply vanished. Her friends had told her to give up when all the leads had run out, but she had never been one to quit. Finally, her persistence had paid off.

Fayde Lavellan paused and held the worn parchment to her face, breathing in the familiar scent of the man whom she had once called friend, then love. There was no doubt it had come from him, although it had passed through many hands to get to her. “You sure you want to do this, boss? It could be a trap.” The mountain that was Iron Bull scratched at his chin thoughtfully as he stood next to her.

“I’m sure.”

“Then let’s go. My boys are already on their way to scout out Var Bellanaris. We can meet up with them after our own investigating is done.” Fayde was glad her old friend had insisted on tagging along to help, even though it meant being away from his partner.

“Thanks, Bull, I don’t know if I could do this without you.”

“Nah, you could, just not as efficiently.” He chuckled before taking a more serious tone. “Listen, I know you want to fly under the radar with this, but I doubt Cassandra would have a problem sparing some resources to help.”

“I know, but I can’t ask that of her. The Divine has wasted enough time and people on my search already; it’s just better if I look into this one myself.” The Qunari’s horns bobbed slightly as he nodded. Bull was more than willing to give his boss her quirks.

“Sometimes you need to do things for yourself; I get it.” And you’ve always had a hard time asking for help anyway, he thought. “So where are we headed first?”

“The Arbor Wilds. I want to go to the Temple of Mythal.” The roiling clouds moved closer, swallowing the stars as they went and threatening to block out the moon.

“Great, because that area won’t be crawling with Vints or wild elves,” he said, words dripping with sarcasm. “Or both.”

“You don’t have to come.” Fayde wove her long hair into a braid and adjusted her pack before hopping lightly across a slim brook racing past the trees.

“Oh, yes, I do, if only to make sure someone has your back,” Bull muttered as they resumed their trek. Two more days to get there. Better be another solid lead, for her sake. He glanced at the phantom arm his friend had crafted out of magic and smirked. At least she doesn’t let something like a missing arm get in her way. Despite the rain that started pattering down, moonlight glinted stubbornly through the storm to light their way.
