the whole severance process and its subsequent success being manufactured from and built upon the labour and suffering of two women. one a child who designed severance to cope with the reality of the world she was forced into, and one being a woman of colour who was kidnapped and turned into a toy to be used at the whims of a white man. and you all wanted to know why ms huang is a child. well here is your answer. a teenage girl of colour currently under the same scholarship as cobel happily and matter-of-factly carrying out the subjugation of people who only exist because of what lumon exploited out of people like her. lumon having entire institutions dedicated to the continued indoctrination of vulnerable children. lumon systematically ensuring any amount of class or race consciousness or solidarity between their subjects is impossible by having them carry out each other's exploitation on their behalf. the innies just being a new rung at the bottom of the ladder whom the disenfranchised and marginalised can feel empowerment in stepping over. and ms huang is just the next in a long, long line of victims

I find it utterly fascinating that Harmony Cobel invented severance because we also got a small glimpse into what her childhood was like.

When she's getting high with Hampton, she says "wow I haven't done that since I was eight," which Hampton responds, "ready to watch the vats for 10 hours?" Which means she came up with the idea to sever the work self from the life self while living and working in hell. No wonder she came up with it. No wonder she dreamed of a world where you didn't have to suffer at work. Someone rich and comfortable couldn't have thought of that. Of course, it was a child who'd lost her mother, a child who was working 10 hour shifts in a factory while living with a cold and hard woman. Of course, it wasn't an Eagan.

i knew i could count on you to save the day, my dearest harmony! i'll admit that i'm usually not that into seasonal drinks, with the exception of these purple-perfection lattes, but that does sound pretty amazing. kindness seems to be getting even rarer these days, and a place where they understand your musical theatre lingo? sounds like my kind of place.

so that's a yes please to that cofee date! it's been way too long, and i need to hear all about your summer. and tell you all about mine. i missed you!

DO NOT FEAR. there's the most cutified coffee shop I accidentally stumbled upon on my route to salsa classes that sells the most ADORABLE, seasonal drinkies. hallow-queen vanilla lattes, valen-WINES iced lattes, HO-HO-COCOA hot chocolates. the servers? absolute darlings! they're filled with compliments, happy to help, have dazzling smiles and one time they UNDERSTOOD my musical theatre lingo! the drinks? to DIE for!

you + me = a coffee date, PRONTO! I guarantee you'll forget allllll about ube iced lattes. plus, going to the phillippines and leaving me in new york without my broadway bestie was extremely rude. we have SO MUCH to catch up on. welcome back to New York, starshine! ☆

Eradicate black-and-white binary thinking from your essence!!

It’s not “the innies and outies are completely separate people OR they’re exactly the same people.” It’s not “Mark loves Gemma OR Mark loves Helly/na.” It’s not “Ricken is a misguided but sweet and well-meaning doofus OR Ricken is a selfish prick with no self-awareness who’s sold out to Lumon.” It’s not “Milchick fully embraces the rebellion right now, OR he’s fully sold his soul to the company store and there’s no coming back.” It’s not “Cobel’s programming means will always jump at a chance to gain favor in the eyes of Lumon regardless of the cost, OR she fucking despises Lumon for what they’ve done to her and she’s going to take them down at any cost.”

It’s always going to be AND!! It’s always going to be something in between, and complex, and nuanced, and layered. That in-between uncertainty, to me, is the real meat of the show. Why not dig into it?
