Signalis Post (barely coherent thought vomit)

So I finished signalis on Monday and i think ive just about recovered enough for me to make a gush post about it on tumblr dot com, which i think i have to do cause i dont think any other game has really hit me as hard as this one. Spoilers obvs.

Being pre-transion, with that associated depression and closing off from oneself, ive always found it difficult to get out my feelings, even in private with just myself, and yet signalis has filled me throughout with its beautiful romantic melancholy and left me genuinely sobbing for the gay robot and her space girlfriend (almost worried that if id played this game on estrogen it might actually have just killed me on the spot). the only other times i can think of where i really cried were playing We Know The Devil near the beginning of the year, which really fkin hit the part of me that struggles to accept myself, and that time i rewatched the last episode of she-ra after reading the ‘Word War Etheria’ fanfic, which brings the characters so much more to life i fell for them all over again.

Signalis is a game that calls back to a lot of classic horror like resident evil and silent hill, which i havent got round to playing any of yet, but i think nostalgia works both ways sometimes and i’ll be playing them sooner now. sometimes horror gets stereotyped as all death and violence, some games fill themselves with skulls and corpses, and big ugly monsters and basically shout ‘DEATH!’ in your face repeatedly and it all just comes off as a bit garish and ridiculous and not actually very scary really. Signalis sits at the other end of that scale (with some of my other fav horror games like soma, cry of fear) where its environs are most usually just… quiet. Still. Muffled. Sad. just as often as theres tension or creeping fear because of this i find theres a strange kind of comfort too. Maybe its just that in most other genres of games theres so much of music, UI elements, pickups and interactibles with vibrant design. Here, theres room for your mind to just occupy the space. A soft fog. A dimly lit room. An empty train. Snow out a window. Liminal spaces that dont expect anything from you.

Signalis is a game thats just simply, unapologetically gay, and i dont think i would have been quite so invested in Elster and Ariane’s relationship if they were a straight couple. Its why representation is important, if art’s way for us to explore our emotions then its important to have media that we can relate to. Even Adler’s role isnt typically masculine. Our replika characters are manufactured, designed for certain roles in the base. Notes from the tough Stars and Storchs in the shooting range, the dollish Eules with the fairy lights and music player in the dorm. I couldnt help but think of groups of Eules sat around chatting, together, and im yearning for that feeling of togetherness, of understanding a friend that closely. I somehow missed the couple in the mineshaft (next playthough, ill find you v_v ). Despite the harshness of life in the Eusan nation (especially for the gestalts) the characters in it are defined by their feelings of belonging and hope. With the obvious parallels to east germany, i think of posters of cosmonauts and space travel from the time. Propaganda, sure but also made with the genuine belief in something greater. When the events of the game take this away, well, we find the last Kolibri, whod rather lose herself than lose her [ah. Im not sure theres a word here to properly describe the relationship they embody]. Its a game defined by loneliness.

We dont lie up at night scared by some corrupted android. We arent stuck with horror at the flesh everywhere, not on its own. We lie awake thinking about Elster and Ariane’s love for each other, the horror of their decline, the futility of trying to hold on forever. Its existential horror done perfectly. It shows an ending postponed and stretched far beyond its limits, and so squarely reminds you that you do, in fact, have to die one day. You’ll break down. One day you’ll say your last words to the people you love and you wont even know you have. Ariane’s final few diaries arrive with the full force of the narrative behind it, like a spear through my heart. For the record, I got the promise ending. Im still sad. It's a game about raging desperately against an unfair ending. I might think about this game for the rest of my life. I would sincerely say its an artistic masterpiece, by the sure definition of video games as art.

I like that the story leaves a lot open and abstract. I think it makes the emotional themes takes centre stage more. And i havent had nearly enough time to sift through it and come up with my own takes, we’ll need a few more playthroughs for that. And theres so much more to say that cant go in just these few paragraphs! Signalis is a game about two girls who had to run away from everything to find someone they belonged with. The universe may be cold and bleak, but you have to try, you might just find something beautiful, even if it doesnt last forever. I think if anything, we should all have the chance to find love and happiness like that, and we shouldnt have abandon a world that doesnt work for us to do it.

i havent had much chance to yet, we just finished listening to (we love audiobooks during car rides) a bunch of nora roberts trilogies back to back (awakening, year one, the circle) and now ive convinced Him to listen to a series i fell in love with when i first started reading and never got to finish: the sookie stackhouse series. ive got some of them but not all and ive finally convinced Him to listen with me.

with books, He leans more sci-fi/high fantasy and i lean more dark romance/fantasy so its really hard to find books we enjoy together. my solo ToBeRead list is easily over 1000 series’ and i dont anticipate it getting smaller

hi dira im abt to propaganda SO hard. okay so aftg!!! full series name is all for the game and its a teilogy the first book is named the foxhole court. its such a silly silly series you go into it expecting ??? and you come out of it Forever Changed this is not just me being dramatic ask ANY fan and they will agree. its the kinda series you finish and you feel like youre fucking high like you imagined everything like it was all a fucking pipe dream (thats a reference. which you would get. if you read the books. that sounds mildly threatening im sorry but anyways yes read the books!!) no but seriously it may not be the BEST literature ever published but the characters latch onto you the brainworms never cease!! somewhat similar to kotlc!! sure every character is a bit of an asshole but you love them anyways esp as the books go on and you learn a little bit more abt them and get a little bit more attached <3 some of the plot twists hit like a TRUCK you read it and you think no way would this actually happen which!! yeah!! it would not actually happen!! its so crazy and fun and if you like the first book then youll never escape the trap. also yes ik i havent said anything abt like the actual BOOK yet but in my defense a lot of this is just pure FEELING and if nothing else my enthusiasm better convince SOMEONE to read aftg. but anyways the actual book ohhh idk how to describe it its like mafia/sports/found family??? i dont know i think i described it somewhat better in my pinned post (more propaganda. everyone go read my pinned post and then read aftg) okay i think im done now!!!!

hi averyy I am not immune to propaganda, I've actually casually looked for the series before just because you've put it on my dash enough I was like right wots all this then? In order to read it I'll have to check out the ebook from my library (not my preferred way to read but its okay), but it's on my list don't you worry. You're right this really has told me like nothing about what the book is actually about, just that you really love it and lose your mind over it, but that's okay because that's enough <3. I think it's about a fake sport, and one of the main characters smokes a lot (but in a hot way that makes him sexier...?), but that's about as much as I could tell you. Oh they're the foxes. Are there lesbians? I feel like there's been mention of a mean lesbian, or maybe just a sapphic in general but I'm not at all confident in that.

🕰️ finished saint germain’s route!

okay, this one was a wild ride & i got some thoughts about it below the cut! finished it fairly quickly too considering how i just recently finished fran’s!

okay, wow. not sure where to start LOL. while i was following a walkthrough for this route, i was like hm, there really are a lotta bad ends, kinda bracing myself (flashbacks to amnesia ukyo’s route). i remember back when i played this game years ago, i loved saint germain so much lmao.

it was so odd to see saint germain grow more and more mysterious the more he and cardia began to talk more, especially during the little walk to the other mansion. he definitely dropped a lot of hints & foreshadowing throughout his route, which was fun bc it made me have a bunch of predictions & such abt him. the more they talked and got to know each other, the more mysterious and farther away saint germain seemed :(. also not to mention how much the bad ends hurt so bad.

anyways! you guys dont know how confused & scared i was when saint germain was like, you’re mine, im going to keep you here, drugging the food & everything. the yandere vibes were going on & i did not want another toma situation going on here 😭 but it was so great to hear more about the apostles of idea after seeing him kill finis in each of the routes lol, which also makes me reminisce the times when finis was still alive & mysterious also. im hoping that he makes an appearance in lupin’s route bc there’s just so much we dont know about finis or have any clear intentions or thoughts (at least, from what i remember of).

i literally did not expect saint germain to have been alive for thousands of years now, how he and idea have existed & the backstories and histories of everyone??? the count’s story with the young child he saved & its connection with the tradgedy caused by the black plague, guinevere’s story with arthur and lancelot, omnibus’ story ranging allll the way back the Adam and Eve and the forbidden fruit??? it was such an interesting and great concept, and i loved it SM (and very emotional as well,,,)

also, not at lupin already falling in love with cardia in this route??? or just caring for her in a more intense way than he had in other routes? my heart hurts. also from the amount of angst in this route too. saint germain’s va did soooo well.

the way that cardia called herself a monster, but saint germain saying so what, that he was one too. that they both loved each other to the point of wanting to sacrifice themselves for each other if it meant their partner living. the way that saint germain was the only one who could touch cardia, & no one else? there was a lot of thing like this that made me go damn, they’re so in love LMAO. at first i had some thoughts abt how i felt like they fell in love too fast, esp with saint germain saying he loved her way near the beginning of the route, but their actions backed each other up tbh & i always loved the walks they took. not to mention i havent played or read the common route in months lol. anyways, love this for them!

tbh im not sure what else to cover, these were just some of the main points i wanted to go over for sure. this was a great route for sure, cant wait to see what the sequel brings bc these two’s journey isn’t over yet!

Yoichi had to tell him. If One-For-All, his own bonded spren, couldn’t be trusted- then all he had left was Nadin. It was so easy to- they’d sworn some oaths, because it had been important to the Alethi Truthwatcher to, and Yoichi wouldn’t have been able to bear leaving Urithiru without a word.

But now he was actually facing Nadin, who smiled at him with no idea of what was to come, indulging him in taking a seat and not using his height to look down on him like he normally did.

And Yoichi was about to bring his world down.

His voice felt so dry, and he suddenly wished he’d opened a jug of stronger wine than this yellow stuff. Still, it was what he had, so he knocked it back in a moment.

Nadin lifted a brow. “Something wrong, then?”

“Yeah. It, uh, happened again. The thing. But I know what it is now.” Yoichi put the empty vessel down on the floor in front of his chair. Then he wished he hadn’t, nothing else to do with his hands but hug himself. It didn’t do much to warm him. With the window open the tower was just too cold, but Nadin liked to keep it open. He claimed the air was good for your health, but Yoichi suspected it was to make it easier for his Windrunner friend to visit.

“That should be a good thing, right? I know you and One-For-All have been trying to figure it out for a while...”

“They lied to me. They already knew what it was. Nadin, I- Those visions, i see the future.”

To see the future was of Odium.

Yoichi had never quite understood why the Alethi went so far, in the forbidding of even gambling on outcomes when it was less predictive than the Stormwardens, never quite understood their fear to get anywhere near that. Yes, seeing the future was of Odium. But no one could do that anyway, so why fear anything but a person who claimed to?

And then he’d realized what was happening, what he saw.

Suddenly, understanding had been thrust upon him. Yoichi, too, wanted to be a thousand leagues from anything resembling it, even the silly shell games from his childhood when they’d guess which shell the sphere was hidden under.

“Ok.” Nadin nodded slowly. “Ok. Well they shouldn’t have lied to you, even if they had that reason.”

Yoichi blinked. blinked again.

Did he really think he needed to be reassured about his feelings being valid right now? Did he really think that was the problem?

Illiteracy of the written type was not the only one that plagued this man, it seemed.

“Nadin. I can see the future. That’s- that’s of Odium. I don’t even know if I am a Truthwatcher!” His voice cracked on the last sentence, head dropping into his hands. 

There was silence for a long moment, and Yoichi wondered if Nadin was looking to Haar for an answer, or if his own spren had perhaps returned after Yoichi shouted at him.

Then the creak of wood, the chair as Nadin stood.

That had been what he’d expected. Being left too, and why not, when he was lie.

Footsteps.

Not towards the door, but to his chair.

Nadin practically shoved him out of it before resettling them in it, arm looped casually over him.

Yoichi couldn’t see his face, but he didn’t need to to know how he felt when he spoke.

“Yo. I know you. I don’t know why you’re having visions, but I know you aren’t of Odium, at least. I trust you.” I love you. “We can figure this out, we can research. There’s plenty of non-Vorin Knights Radiant, they’d probably be easier to ask and look. And if One-For-All knew, other spren might as well. We will figure this out.”

“I don’t know where they went, after they told me the truth. I don’t know how much we can trust them anyway, or the other spren that know of it.” Yoichi sighed, resisting the urge to relax into Nadin yet. “And even aside where these visions come from- what they say is terrible too.”

“You’re worried about some of the things you saw.” Nadin realized. “Oh.”

Yeah, oh. Yoichi had only told him some of the strange sights and dreams, and there had been so many more. So many worse.

He just nodded. 

He felt Nadin nod back.

Then he leaned around Yoichi to kiss him on the nose.

Yoichi jerked back, “Hey.”

“Did you see that coming?”

“Wha- no?’

“Then you just don’t see the good things coming. Your visions are not all encompassing or all powerful, so i’m afraid you will not be able to take the Almighty’s position yet.”

Yoichi twisted so he could actually see Nadin, look into his deep brown eyes. Brown, safe, not green like when he needed to draw Haar as a blade.

“I guess not.” Yoichi huffed a laugh. “But I’ll let you know if that changes, my wonderful Knight.”

“Please do.” Nadin didn’t say anything more for a while, but he did lean his head on Yoichi’s and held him close.

Major 999 spoilers dont read this if u havent finished that game

I almost don’t want to play Virtue’s Last Reward because 999 had the absolute best, most shocking yet satisfying and beautiful ending of any video game I’ve ever played, quite possibly of every piece of media I’ve ever finished.

Like okay the only spike chunsoft game I ever finished was the original danganronpa (& im old, i finished reading it bc eng version wasnt out yet) which i think very much informed my expectations of 999, like yeah, got it. A bunch of people who mostly don’t know each other are trapped somewhere for unknown mysterious reasons and theres mortal peril, its a visual novel with puzzles & mystery, and the mastermind Might Even Be One of Them. Like i really thought i could see where a lot of this was going.

but i called almost nothing about the identity or motives of Zero. Like, the 2 things i predicted accurately were a) i thought santa was probably the sibling of the girl who died, and b) i was Certain that he was lying through his teeth about not caring about June in the coffin ending, bc id noticed he seemed kinda protective of her before & watched over her while she was sick. I didnt connect those 2 things, i did suspect he might be zero bc of them, but like.

What im so impressed by isnt who Zero turned out to be, really, but by the motive and the resolution. Having a setup where the entire time the characters are in mortal peril, in a race against the clock, unsure who they can trust, multiple violent bad endings, etc., is nothing new. But having the big twist that reveals the villain’s identity, be paired with her being in danger and Junpei’s genuine, heart-wrenching need to save her and the reveal of her never having been a bad person at all and never having endangered him, is absolutely phenomenal. (And the lack of real danger coming from Zero doesn’t devalue or cheapen the circumstances the characters have gone through, either.)

It’s not even ‘oh she did bad things but some people could argue she’s sympathetic.’ it’s that she was right, she did what she had to do, it was traumatizing but nobody is upset with her now that they understand, and even the 2 people she was an accessory to murdering completely deserved it so we don’t care. (Which in and of itself is awesome, the game totally justifies the killing of abusive capitalists.)

Just. Having the True Ending of a game that’s so filled with pain and despair and violence and death, be. Everybody lives, none of them were in real danger, the main cast goes on a road trip together with the CEO of a pharmaceutical company hog-tied in the trunk... it made me cry like a baby, it takes all the stress of playing the game and turns it into such healing poetry, such a release of tension, it’s absolutely amazing.

I DO IN FACT HAVE DRAMA RECS HII not all of these will be kdramas, but ill start with the kdramas ive watched and enjoyed and ill include all the warnings for them that i can remember off the top of my head and a brief synopsis for u!

kdramas-

1. weight lifting fairy kim bok joo

this was probably one of the first kdramas i saw people post about in like 2015 and i watched a little bit of it in 2016 but then only just got around to finishing it last year. the basic gist of it is its about a young sports college weight lifter, kim bok joo, centering around her navigating through her life and trying to figure out who she is and what she wants in life and what she wants to be. her romantic interest in the show is a swimmer and they have a sort of rivals to friends to lovers, he is SO in love with her and its adorable. i absolutely loved the side characters in this show theyre all so fun and kim bok joos best friends and weight lifting team are especially delightful. my main warning would be that this show addresses eating disorders and theres a lot of mention of both weight gain and weight loss, theres also a plot point early on where kim bok joo has a crush on her eventual love interests older brother but it gets resolved and the older brother literally goes "i didnt realize you had a crush on me and if i knew that i wouldnt have been so friendly with you, it would be completely innapropriate for us to be in a relationship". overall its a really sweet and emotional fun show but if you have issues with weight talk id skip this one

2. tale of the nine tailed

this one is really recent from last year and i didnt expect to be so hooked by it but boy howdy did i get attached to all the characters and the wild plot. it feels hard to explain the plot but basically a nine tailed fox named lee yeon is living in modern day seoul and is working for the underworld finding paranormal spirits/creatures/other rogue foxes that are causing havoc on the world, hes resigned himself to living this life while waiting for his girlfriend who died tragically 600 years ago to come back to life because he traded his status as a mountain god in order to ensure that her soul would one day be reincarnated. a plucky investigative journalist named nam ji ah figures out that hes not human and shenanagins ensue because she looks exactly like his dead girlfriend oooooo whatll happen. the plot beyond that gets really wild and its hard to explain and is easier to just watch. if u enjoy paranormal adventures this one is good. my one big complaint and issue with this is that the immortal mountain spirit meets his original girlfriend when shes a child and she continues to visit him off and on as she grows up which is Hm I Dont Like That! but thankfully the present time romance our female lead meets him when shes about 30 if im remembering right. also warnings for general fantasy violence, references to child abuse, animal death, and abandonment issues

3. extraordinary you

HUGE unreality warning for this. if you have issues with feeling unreal or have paranoia/delusions about not being a real person id avoid this one just because of its premise

ok i know i said tale of the nine tailed was a hard plot to explain but BOY extraordinary you is even HARDER to explain. because its so wild but so good. its about a girl who realizes that she is literally a side character in a comic book, and the story becomes her trying to change the story to save her character from dying but it becomes a lot more than that. the romance in this is literally tooth achingly sweet and the show itself is very pretty, i loved the side characters in this one and the show was engaging and interesting to watch it became really layered and meta. super reccomend this one honestly. my main issues/warnings that i can remember off the top of my head were just one character being the classic controlling boyfriend stereotype, bullying someone specifically for being poor, unreality like i mentioned before, and then at the very end there was this love interest for a side character who got reincarnated from a past piece of writing that they had been in and put in the comic but she was a student and he was the school cook which is weird but thankfully they like barely interact at all and theres no real romance he just like recognizes her and its barely a thing at the end of the show but its still weird

4. mystic pop up bar

big warning for suicide, sexual harrasment (which is framed as being bad and the guy whos harrassing the girl literally gets thrown off a roof)

i havent finished this one yet and thats mainly because im not emotionally ready because this one makes me soooo emotional. if you like found family this is a good one. its about a pop up bar run by a woman whos been tasked with solving the problems of a certain amount of people in order to atone for her crimes in the past before dying, shes able to enter the dreams of people and solve their issues using the information she gets in the dreams. paranormal shenanagins ensue, she acquires a son and a husband and it kills me its so fun and quirky and fun despite handling dark themes and peoples problems. also very sweet the found family murders me

5. kingdom (netflix original)

i literally am not going to be able to watch any other zombie media because kingdom and train to busan are the best pieces of zombie media ive ever seen. warnings for gore and violence and just general horror aspects.

i absolutely love this one its so thrilling and well done, i love the acting and the way that this show looks its absolutely gorgeous. a zombie plague breaks out in joseon period korea where the emperor has died and then was brought back to life by the queen and her father in a ploy to try and keep their family in political power, the crown prince must find answers. a lot more happens and its very dramatic and good i love the characters in this one

cdramas

1. the untamed. if you follow me and you havent watched the untamed im begging you to watch the untamed. literally one of the most beautiful stories ive experienced in my life i am not joking when i say i cried multiple times over it. the main characters are canonically gay in love and have a son together please watch the untamed. handles a lot of dark themes, heres a tw guide

2. the sleuth of the ming dynasty

this is another one i havent finished but its fun so far, very gay, found family, food, and solving murder mysteries during the ming dynasty

3. hikaru no go (also known as qi hun)

havent finished this one, there is some propaganda about hong kong in the first episode but as far as i know thats the only instance of something like that in the show

this ones about the game go and so far its very sweet and fun, local boy awakens a ghost who was a master of the game of go hundreds of years ago and eventually is persuaded to learn how to play go with the aid of the ghost. im really liking this one so far its very cute and i love the characters in it. if youve watched the untamed nie huaisangs actor ji li is in this one!

4. the legend of yunqian

this ones very short and on youtube, all the episodes are about 5 minutes long and its a lesbian time travel fantasy adventure with a happy ending! funny and cute

jdramas

1. cherry magic

please please please watch cherry magic. the premise sounds very much like a weird yaoi kind of thing but trust me on this. trust me. it is so heart warming and sweet and i was so emotional about it and the growth of the main character.

adachi gains the power to read peoples minds on his 30th birthday based off a urban legend that if youre a 30 year old virgin that youll become a wizard. after gaining this power he accidentally finds out that his extremely popular and handsome coworker has a crush on him, and shenanagins ensue along with adachi having blossoming feelings in return. this show was really refreshing in a lot of ways, adachi is a main character who like.. is unsure of himself and insecure in a very kind of realistic way, he closes himself off and is afraid to reach out to people and through the course of the show we see him slowly come out of his shell and realize that hes likeable and lovable and that people want to be around him and its so nice to see. my main complaint about this show is that i dont really like the background couple, but otherwise this is a very sweet and refreshing gay romance that has a happy ending!

some others that i myself havent seen but that ive seen people talk about a lot and that i want to watch eventually:

- healer (kdrama, i did watch some of this one but it was in 2016 and i never finished it so i barely remember any of it but i do remember liking it)

just finished aa4 and really liked it! quick thoughts:

-apollo has quickly become one of my favorite characters in aa! he really struck that sweet spot between admirable and endearing for me--a hardworking, quick-thinking young man, who grew up as an orphan and clawed his way up to success and a new family in the wrights, and who’s also unrelentingly snarky, can’t whisper for his life, is terrified of heights, and cries over people that he hardly knows. what a dork, i love him. i think they leaned a little heavily on the ‘greenhorn’ aspect of his personality-- quite a few moments where there were things i had figured out but wasn’t allowed to do anything with until another character jumped in and was like “apollo u sweet summer child THIS is the answer”. also i spoiled myself a little and i know that the next two games have “traumatize apollo” as a running theme so a little apprehensive and hoping they at least develop his character well or smth

-mixed feelings about the ‘perceive’ mechanic bc narratively it’s cool as hell but  it was frustrating to crawl through the text looking around for a very slight change in the zoomed-in sprite, especially if it wasn’t clear what they’re fibbing about which is very often. had to use a guide on those parts pretty often. also it’s just like “hey you were twitching! you’re obviously hiding something!” “oh gee you caught me i’ll spill the beans” like i feel like it could’ve been a little more subtle or gradual, idk.

- love apollo and trucy’s relationship so much!! their banter is so cute and funny and they pull off the straight man/funny man routine really well. ik nick and maya have a similar thing but the vibes were just different, for some reason. they had very strong sibling vibes (even before the reveal), which i loved. them being half-siblings was pretty contrived (like a lot of things in this game and this series lmao) but i dont really mind too much

-on another related note i can understand how jaded and disillusioned phoenix got after he got disbarred but i honestly didn’t like the whole “mysterious cryptic mentor playing 4d chess” schtick that the game pulled. it feels ooc, especially considering you briefly play as present-day him in the final case and his internal monologue doesn’t seem too different from original trilogy phoenix, or at least the phoenix you see before disbarment in the final case (although i was rly invested in finishing up the case and wasn’t paying that much attention to phoenix’s characterization specifically, so i might’ve missed stuff). phoenix’s arc of growth was great and complete in t&t and it feels like they just...gave him a whole new personality. also phoenix goes back to being a lawyer in the next two games...does he just revert back to being regular ol phoenix? idk, maybe i’m missing some stuff right after my first playthrough but it just felt weird.

-plot was really convoluted and contrived even for ace attorney (havent played aa5 or 6 yet, so idk if it gets worse). lamiroir just happened to be apollo and trucy’s mom, if zak had just been frank with phoenix and given the original diary page to him OR valant hadn’t tampered with the crime scene this whole thing could’ve been avoided. why did zak want to take down phoenix in poker to the extent of planting cards on him to make it look like he cheated when phoenix was the one who defended him in court and he’s the one taking care of his daughter??

-way too many flashbacks to things that happened 5 real life minutes ago

-kind of wish they had done more with trucy. i liked her but i feel like there was potential, especially since the game implies that she’s putting on a brave front for apollo, and i wish they had expanded on that a little more. like....her birth father who had been presumed dead for years ends up being alive right up until mere months before the reveal. she’s the one that ends up delivering the forged evidence into phoenix’s hands as a child, even though she was completely unaware of it at the time. she and phoenix latch onto each other pretty quickly, which was very cute, but we get little insight to how she thinks of her biological father, who we can tell she loved and misses but not much else. maybe i’m just digging for angst, idk, but it still felt like there could’ve been more. (also i really wanted more phoenix-being-a-dad content!! be a dad to ur daughter sir!!)

-klavier was pretty good! it was refreshing to have a prosecutor that wasn’t after ‘perfection’ or had a vendetta against defense attorneys/the protag, but he still managed to come off as a competent opponent. his whole rockstar persona was very cheesy but i liked it lol. (also really hilarious to me that the third case starts with him giving discounted tickets to trucy and apollo, his opponents in actual legal court) also i knew people shipped him and apollo but i wasn’t expected the game to be so forthright with it. like how else are you supposed to interpret klavier saying “i’m used to being inspected by the ladies but this is the first time ive felt like this with a man”????

-ema skye!!! loved her and glad to see her in a spotlight role but it was just kind of sad seeing her perpetually grumpy. ik people didn’t like that there were so many forensic touchpad/mic minigames but i didn’t really mind it, they were kinda fun if sometimes a little tedious

-i for sure thought that valant had been directly involved with the murder in turnabout serenade (my initial theory was that valant was masquerading as daryan during set 3 while daryan shot letouse, which was why 2nd guitar was off during the recording). also i hated daryan’s hair, why does he have a military grade skunk torpedo on his head,

-this has already gone on long enough so tl;dr solid 7.5/10 would play again once i forget what happens a little bit

Virgil mostly talked with Brennan on the phone, he lived back in Virgil's other neighborhood, so they wouldnt be seeing each other until he got back from Jan's house.

Virgil didnt mind of course, he'd ways been more patient than his older brother, though some said it was because at that point he was used to never getting things, so he just never expected anything to happen as it was.

"You've been talking to this Brennan boy quite a lot havent you?" Janus said, a smirk on his face.

"Well friends talk to friends a lot dont they?" Virgil replied, hiding his face in his jacket slightly. Logan and Janus exchanged looks.

"Well they do!" Virgil said, pouting slightly.

"I'm just teasing Virgil!" Janus said in return, Logan laughed slightly.

"We do have good news though, Janus continued, Virgil lifted his head up slightly.

"Dad wants you to come home tomorrow," Janus continued. Virgil leapt out of his chair excitedly, rushing upstairs to pack his things as Janus and Logan watched him.

"Do you think our kids will be that excited about seeing us?" Logan said.

"I should hope they wont have to wait three weeks to see us after a visit with siblings," Janus replied, resting his head on Logan's chest.

Virgil awoke early the next morning for Janus to drive him back home, watching the woods pass by his eyes as they moved. Patton was sitting on the porch swing, waiting for them.

"Papa!" Virgil practically threw himself out of the car as soon as Janus had parked it and raced up the pathway to Patton.

"Aaawww, kiddo! Did you miss me or somethin?" Patton said, wrapping his arms around Virgil.

"Mhm," Virgil said, burying his head in Patton's shoulder. He helped Janus put his things back in his room before watching him drive away again.

"So what did you do while you were at Janus' place hm?" Patton said, raising an eyebrow and smiling.

"We played games and I helped him with his business and we went to the fair and I met a boy and he lives in this neighborhood so we can finally talk in person again!" Virgil said, Patton's smile widened.

"So tell me about this boy," Patton said.

"His name's Brennan, hes really nice and smart and funny and smart and pretty and smart," Patton let out a small chuckle.

"So you like a man with brains huh? Gee this family really does have a type," Patton said, his face fell slightly as he registered the sentence, his eyes flickering towards a wedding photo of himself and Mr. Black.

"Can I go meet him?" Virgil asked.

"Of course kiddo, but be home in time for dinner ok?" Patton said. Virgil nodded and rushed out of the door, scanning the slip of paper he'd received so long ago with the address on it.

Brennan's house was a dullish gray color, with white framed windows and a white roof, like it was meant to be in perpetual winter. The door to the house was black, with an ornate knocker on the front. Virgil knocked it three times and stood there, waiting.

A few moments later a woman answered the door, she was thin and blonde and had red eyes.

"Who are you?" She said, her voice was raspy, yet sweet.

"V-Virgil Black-" Virgil said, shifting his feet a little.

"Brennan! Your boyfriend's here!" Said the girl, Virgil blushed slightly at the idea. The girl moved out of the way as Brennan came running down the stairs.

"Excellent, now come on Virgil- I have something I want to talk to you about," Brennan said, grabbing Virgil by the hand. Virgil merely nodded and followed him to what he assumed was Brennan's room. Brennan sat him down on a chair in front of a whiteboard.

"What? Are you gonna tutor me or something?" Virgil said with a laugh. He snapped his mouth shut when he realized Brennan wasnt laughing.

"Now, as we have established, you are more boyfriend, and will be for the foreseeable future, so we have to lay some ground rules," Brennan said. Virgil's face heat up even more, he gripped the chair slightly, hanging on Brennan's every word.

"What are the rules?" He said, tilting his head.

"Simple, no mentioning family drama, no mentioning your uh- crying- thing, I'll be able to handle that one but my family doesnt handle emotional people very well," Virgil's face fell slightly as he watched Brennan write Dont Be A Crybaby on the board.

"Rule number three, I'm in charge, as the one with superior emotional and mental capacity, I will be better adept to making plans, you'll be better at all the mushy cuddly stuff," Brennan finished. He placed a sheet of paper down on Virgil's lap, the words were written in bright colored ink. Virgil folded and pocketed the paper, and Brennan sat next to him on the chair.

"So for our first date, you and I will be watching a movie," Virgil was about to ask what movie when Brennan turned the tv on.

Virgil hadnt realized movies could be so boring, he spent most of it with his body pressed against Brennan's, and Brennan's arm around his waist. He let out a yell of triumph in his chest when it was finally over.

"So what do we do now?" Virgil asked as Brennan moved to get up.

"I have practice in a few minutes so we'll have to wait till tomorrow," Brennan said.

"Why cant I watch you practice?" Virgil replied, fumbling with the strings of his hoodie.

"The sports I play wouldnt really suit your tastes, that's why we watched what we did, I didnt want to frighten you and cause you to start crying again like at the fair," Brennan said. Virgil smiled a little, this all seemed to make much more sense now. Virgil gave Brennan a goodbye kiss on the cheek before running off to tell Patton about his date, he couldnt seem to get the image of himself and Brennan in the future,much happier than he'd ever been, past or present.

2020 Creator Reflection

March: i talked abt this one here so hell yeah, i love me some angst and revving up elliot’s fatal flaw to ruin his life

April:  Oh God, Nol Antagonized The Feral Possum Too And Now Everything Is Going To Become Bad. it was really hard for me to commit and let nol be the idiot he is to one of my friends but im rly glad i managed it. i expected a lot of tauntness in his character from removing him from ishgard but i wasn't completely sure how i would express it beyond his fragmented thoughts. he never says or thinks quite what he wants to in the order he intends. his impulsivity is damning here n i like that a lot

May:  next year for sure im gonna write at least two clo stories. i dont like that he's That Aesthetic Cat Boy on this blog when he's my vehicle for horror. his voice is also one i haven't figured out yet so id rly like to get that done. shout out to the little pharos in the back.....ilu

June (one): trench warfare trench warfare trench warfare, aka me rewriting what square was too cowardly to put thought into, plus a good dose of sucker punching nol. its much overdue but im working on another sb thing too based on brave's IR so i rly rly wanna finish that soon next year.

July (one):  this one reminded me that oh. yeah. i CAN photoshop things if i have a vision. bc halone knows i havent in a long time. im a bitch for arr and i love the calamity, but i dont write much abt my boys' childhoods so never get to directly address it. i rly love the one of elliot, who is definitely not eating a piece of bread

July (two):  this bitch wrote FLUFF and POETRY in ONE STORY so thats p cool. i rly like elliot getting smacked by the piano.

August:  spinny. the combination of cute pastels and nols dead anger face is p funny tbh

September (one):  i looooove showing nol's perception against elliot's. nol has an interesting relationship w eli's room, too, as a place of comfort but also massive change, so it's always fun to get him to interact w it. still, elliot operates almost mockingly here--id like to change that vibe bc while his actions are deliberate, they're not cruel.

September (two):  this one was fun to write and fun to read. I've missed writing nol n eli in that awkward period of their early friendship a lot n this let me revisit it. their fondness for each other is clear but theyre evidently not quite *used*to each other. also "a fair trade, he considered, as nol manhandled him through the window" still makes me laugh.

October:  FRUMPY CLOTHES FRUMPY CLOTHES FRUMPY CLOTHES. v happy w this outfit. good clothes this year even if i didnt play very much at all.

November:  i loooooove writing jos and nol. they have so much tension its beautiful. mentor characters are one of my favorite ways to push another chara to do smth uncomfortable, so jos' prodding is the perfect combination of understanding and advice to get nol to reflect on what he needs to. even if that's calling elliot a bitch

i didnt get to do anything for three of the months this year, which is kind of weird for me, but also. its whatever. bc this is 2020.

i rly didnt get to create much at all tbh for 2020 reasons, but also for job reasons--i v happily began working at a public library halfway through this year. adjusting to that time sink was p difficult.

i also really. didn’t play ffxiv much. i did start playing a couple other video games tho, like animal crossing and a few zeldas, and i started tw3 a few weeks ago and im enjoying it. ill take that as progress, too

im working really hard on starting a book blog so i dont expect to return to the game very quickly next year. but i really miss my characters and my friends so i def want to put more time into ffxiv. i have an industrial revolutions wip that i should be done with in the next month, plus another marriage plot wip that i can begin tying together too.

i would really like if i could finish the rp plot for marriage plot im cooking and contribute it to my fc a little. who doesnt need a little more ishgardian drama in their life, duh,

but we made it! to the end of the year! even if it feels lonely and the festivity is really out of me, im glad to move into 2021 and take the little good parts with me.

Part one

Camille's in the kitchen when he gets home. The moment he sees her the guilt he has felt plaguing him the whole drive home disappears, replaced with the hurt and anger yet again.

"Welcome home baby," she says cheerfully, as if she hasn't a care in the world. She comes to him, arms open, only to give a confused 'hmm' when he rejects her arms.

"We need to talk." He says flatly. She can tell something's wrong.

"Anything baby-"

"Don' call me tha'." He snaps. He sighs, rubbing his hand over his face, trying to figure out how to have this conversation. :I met Marie today." He uses her fake name, wondering if she had ever told Camille her real one. From the look on her face he can tell she never did.

"Oh...Harry please let me-"

"Why weren't you honest with me?"

"What could I say? That I paid a prostitute to teach me how to please you? Do you realize how humiliating that is?"

"If you wanted tips you could have read a fucking Cosmo for fucks sake Camille! You paid her to teach you tricks. Did you really do that for me or-" he can't bring himself to say it, his whole body rolling with rage, his hands shake at his sides, eyes burning with unshed tears.

"Harry." She reaches up but he jerks just out of her reach. "Harry it was for you...I never....I would never-"

"I'm moving out." He says flatly, surprising even himself. "I can't....I can't be here." He pushes past her towards the bedroom they once shared, painful memories of love and laughter, intimacy fill his mind as he packs a bag and throws it over his shoulder.

"Harry please dont do this," she begs as he walks towards the door. The slamming of it as he leaves his final word on the matter.

He doesn't really have anywhere to go, not at the moment. But he knows the motels around the place well enough to find somewhere to sleep. Or not sleep as the case may be. He can't really imagine resting right now, he feels too much to let go of wakefulness.

He can't really see being with Camille anymore, even though he still loves her, he can't look at her without thinking of Prudence, of what she's paid her for.

And what he has paid her to do.

He feels...not bad about it, his relationship was over before he paid a stranger to blow him. But he feels weird, like there was more to it, something about their meeting that wasn't finished when he found out the truth about Camile, and came down Rudi's throat. Something that hung there in the air after they'd said goodbye.

Rudi.

Where the hell did that come from?

Harry flips a thin motel pillow over his face, blocking out the flashing neon.

Sleep.

Sleep. Now.

Fuck.

Doors bang along the balcony of the motel the ice machine rumbles to itself and cars howl past on the freeway. Harry flips onto his front and buries his face in the stale bedding, the sheets itch at his naked back. He misses his bed, but missing that leads to missing other things. His home, his girl, his entire previous existence.

He wishes he'd gone for a place with a mini-bar. If he's going to be this pathetic he might as well be drunk.

Voices cross the walkway outside of his room. He cracks an eye at the clock on the wall – 4 am. The voices get nearer, a deep rough voice, taunting and cruel.

"C'mon Jezebel...come here..." indistinct shuffling and the bang of a thin door crashing against the wall in the room next to his own. Great. A lighter thud as someone, presumably the 'Jezebel' in question – "How much? How much for you...like this?" A man growled almost against the the paper thin walls "You suddenly worth more? Someone been filling your head with nonesense?" the laugh again. "Get on your knees, two hundred girl, you're going to work for it." Harry officially gives up on sleep at the first moan.

It's unpleasant, the guys voice is like a raspy like he smokes too many cigarettes. He keeps up a steady commentary, barking the occasional 'Faster' or the slightly more unpleasant 'God like that, fuck' which ruins about eight of Harry's childhood memories. After a long long time, the strangled groans of appreciation grown in both volume and frequency, ending in a growled out 'Fuck!' and then, blissful silence until...

"Swallow."

Harry wishes for death, or at least alcohol, now with more sincerity than before. He really should have factored in cheap hotel = hookers and loud sex. Clearly he wasn't thinking. Since he's going to be awake he figures he might as well stop pretending. He noticed a coke machine at the end of the walkway earlier and so he gets up, flicks on the TV and pulls on his pants, searching for change. He's ducking out the door when he hears it, on the walkway.

"Not worth two hundred, was it Jezebel" the voice has gotten, if anything, more unpleasant. Pressing and dangerously low. "What am I going to do with you?"

"Nothing you haven't paid for." Replies a a sharp and annoyed tone. Harry freezes, because it isn't a bimbo's voice, it's Prudence.

Small fucking world huh?

"You should only be using that mouth to suck my dick." Snarls the man.

Harry opens the door, telling himself that this isn't his business, but that he has to intervene.

A man, a little taller than Prudence, but thicker with muscle and wearing the long dark coat and expensive suit of a businessman has her backed against the railing just outside his door. Prudence is bravely trying not to shiver in the night air, despite the fact that it's drizzling and she's still in the thin T-shirt and jeans she was wearing earlier.

"Can I help you?" the asshole snaps. Prudence looks at Harry with faint surprise and perhaps a trace of relief.

"No but..." Harry's mind works quickly. "well...'Jezebel' and I? We have an outstanding appointment...don't we?" he tries to be gross and sleezy, slightly smirking, hoping he's pulled it off. The guy looks at him a moment longer, then backs away, scoffing.

"This bitch isnt worth it." He confides, he slaps Prudence's ass, causing her to flinch, jerking away.

Harry ignores him, waiting instead for the man to leave, getting into a silver BMW on the other side of the parking lot.

"You ok Rudi?" Prudence frowns at the name but nods, a smile curving her mouth but not reaching her eyes.

"Yes, thank you...I always expect the worst from Benjamin."

"He seems like a dick"

Harry doesn't really know what to say to that. Because sleeping with reasonable, nice person is one thing, getting shoved around by vicious pricks at the break of dawn in a sleazy motel...he feels sorry for her.

"You want to...I don't know, come in, for a while?" She pauses, hesitating on the walkway. "Not for...just to get it together? I'll give you a ride home if you want."

A genuine smile, small but bright, spread across her face.

"Thank you Harry"

It's a little awkward. She stands just inside the doorway, the tv on low, the glowing light illuminating her face with shadows. Harry can see she's shivering.

"You can use the blanket if you wan'" he says, gesturing towards the bed. She smiles with gratitude, not saying anything she walks over to the bed, pulling the cheap duvet up and around herself. Harry clears his throat. "I'm sorry...I don't know what to say."

"It's alright. You don't have to say anything." Harry nods, a thick knot growing in his throat, he swallows hard, thinking about her mouth, the way she had worked him to release earlier, his lip twitches. She seems to sense where his mind is going.

"Do you-?" She doesn't finish. He knows what she's asking.

"No. No I'm okay." He mentally slaps himself. He doesnt want to be that guy. He won't be.

"You don't have to be a gentleman."

"I take it you're not used to that?" She shrugs.

"Some of the guys are nice. The women can be sweet sometimes....but it's like a facade. They don't want to 'be like the rest' they play a game but we both know what they're there for and after a few minutes it's all the same."

"Why do it? I mean...do you enjoy it?" His cheeks heat up awkwardly. He's not sure why he's asking her this.

"Are you asking because of our encounter earlier?" Shit. She caught him.

"You seemed pretty into it." She smiles, laughing lightly. It's nice, helps him relax a bit.

"I was. It's rare that I get to enjoy myself like that but....it's more of a job to pay for what I really do."

"And what's that?"

"I paint." This surprises him. He never expected that she could be....so normal. Is that the right word. "My dad....he always encouraged me to follow my heart."

"Does he know what you do to support yourself?" She shakes her head.

"No. My dad....we havent talked in a while." The way she says it leaves no room for more questions. She shuts down the conversation. Harry nods. Rudi lays back, opening the duvet to him. "Do you mind if I sleep here? Just for a few hours? I'm exhausted. I promise to keep my hands to myself." He chuckles, laughing for the first time in what felt like ages.

"A few hours." He agrees. He lays down, making sure to keep his distance as best he can. He stares at the ceiling, listening to her as she quickly falls asleep. He turns his head. She looks peaceful, the dark shadows under her eyes standing out against her skin but she almost looks like a child sleeping soundly. It doesn't take him long to follow suit, falling into fitful slumber.

I finished drying myself off and brushing out my hair before opening tik tok. I never meant to get addicted to it but It just kind of happened. As I scrolled through the 'for you' page I found a video that intrigued me. It was a lady dropping her towel in front of her unsuspecting boyfriend and her filming his reaction. I laughed at first before realizing that I had, in that moment, the perfect set up for this to possibly work. I was still in a towel and had a phone with a tik tok account on it. What could possibly go wrong? other than, possibly someone else in the compound seeing me naked but that was a risk i was willing to take.

I started recording, showing myself in my towel quickly in the mirror before walking down the hallway to where peter was. I closed the door so no passer bys would see us and made my way to him. He was sat at his desk, playing a game, trash talking as best he could into his headset. I watched the small hairs on the back of his neck raise as I got closer. When I was close enough i dropped my towel and waited, it took him a second to notice me. I smiled widely to myself as he took a quick side glance at me, realizing what was happening after a second look. His mouth hung open as he dropped his controller to the desk. I laughed, watching his reaction as well as the shakiness of my hand holding the recording phone. His mouth hung open.

"Wow."

He said, making me giggle. Then realization washed over him.

"what, You wanna do this now? Like it's time?"

He asked in disbelief, making me laugh more. I nodded and he stood up, walking towards me but getting choked by his headphone cord. He made a weird croaking sound before pulling them off. I laughed as the recording stopped. I went to post it but dropped my phone to the ground as he picked me up, draping me over his shoulder.

"Ah! Peter put me down!"

I laughed, watching the tiles disappear behind us as he opened the door and walked with me back down the hallway to our shared room.

"Peter I'm naked!"

I protested as held me tightly to him.

"You said now."

He quipped back, making me shake my head.

"We could've done it in there, then no one else would see me. You know we dont exactly have our own private wing."

I said a little panicked. We were in the compound after all, and no matter if we had our own wing or not there was still a chance patrol would be walking around. Or cap for that matter, Sam liked to take jogs around the building.

"No ones out, it's fine."

Peter squeezed my leg as he kicked the door open, walking me across the room and dropping me on the bed, making me laugh.

"You dork, what if Sam would've been out?"

He laughed a little bit.

"But he wasnt. Now do you really wanna do this? Like it's time?"

I nodded, sitting back a bit.

"So says the calendar. I was gonna ask tonight but I saw a tik tok."

I blushed madly at the thought and he just shrugged.

"Works for me."

He said, a smirk spreading across his face. I raised a brow at him before he bent down and kissed me passionately. I hummed into his mouth as he pushed me further up the bed.

"Let's do this."

I sat on the couch in the lounge and scrolled through my phone, watching more tik toks and answering more of people's comments on the video I had posted of Peter's reaction. It had kind of gotten crazy after i posted it a few weeks back. i didnt think anything of it but I was shaken from my thoughts when I heard the ringing of the phone. I sighed deeply before answering it, shuri popping up in front of me with a wide smile on her face.

"Hey."

I said cooly. She just looked at me knowingly.

"Why didn't you tell me you were trying to start a family? Imagine a little super baby running around!"

She said excitedly. I was so confused, and that must've shown on my face.

"Look,"

She said, pulling up a news article for me to see.

"This was posted this morning about the tik Tok you made! Everyone is saying it's about time you two get to it."

She joked and my eyes went wide. We hadn't told anyone we were trying yet. After all we'd been together for a while but we didn't want anyone to expect anything from our attempts.

"Shuri was does the article say exactly?"

She pulled it up and started playing the feed. I watched the telecaster in worry.

"Young avenger y/h/n filmed yesterday her and her long time boyfriend before getting busy. The trend has popped up on the popular app tik Tok of women dropping their towels for their boyfriend's to catch their reaction. In the video y/n's partner asks if 'its time?' confirming media accusations that the couple have been trying for a third member of their family. We have reason to believe-"

I dropped the feed, cutting him off as I went back to shuri.

"How could they possibly get that we are trying to start a family out of that?!"

I said angrily, crossing my arms over my chest and falling into one of the chairs at the table. She just shrugged.

"I don't know, but is it true?"

I sent her a look and hesitated before answering.

"Well yeah but we weren't telling anyone until it actually happened. Do you know how much pressure that puts you under? It's bad enough I've been stressing about trying anyways and now everyone's gonna start asking how it's going. And I am not ready for that!"

i watched her as she just shrugged.

"dont think too much about it. you dont have to confirm anything with anyone."

i pouted a little bit but my attention being pulled away when peter walked into the room.

"hey baby."

he said, pecking me on the cheek.

"hey shuri."

he said, sitting next to me and taking my hand in his.

"hey peter."

she said knowingly and he looked at me a little confused. i rolled my eyes.

"the news has been reporting that we are trying to start a family."

his eyes went wide and i watched a deep blush creep to his face.

"theyre what?"

he croaked out, making me laugh a little bit.

"i was kind of surprised too, i mean i did post that video weeks ago. i guess it just took longer for it to go viral?"

i asked looking to shuri.

"doesnt it always?"

she asked and i shrugged.

"well either way id better get going, brother needs help with something."

i nodded.

"tell him we say hi."

she nodded back before disconnecting the call. i looked back at peter who was just staring at the table.

"are you okay pete?"

i asked, rubbing his back absentmindedly.

"i dont know y/n, knowing that people know weve been doing that makes me feel weird."

i sent him a pity smile.

"would it make you feel better knowing it paid off?"

he looked at me and raised a brow.

"what do you mean?"

i inhaled deeply.

"well, i wanted to wait to tell you but... im late."

he looked a little confused for a second before it clicked.

"wait, like late late? like we could possibly be pregnant?"

i laughed a little bit and nodded.

"i havent taken a test yet but possi-"

he cut me off when he brought me into a tight hug.

"we could be pregnant?"

he asked again, more excited this time. when he pulled away he held my arms in his hands.

"we could be pregnant!"

he practically yelled, making me laugh.

"oh my god."

he said pulling me into another hug.

"i love you so much."

i hugged him back, kissing his neck lightly.

"i love you too peter."

he pulled away and stood up, taking my hand and dragging me up too.

"come on! weve gotta go get a test!"

he said, pulling me out of the lounge. i just laughed at him as he led us down the hall.

"peter youre gonna take my arm off."

he looked back at me but kept walking.

"time is of the essence y/n."

i shook my head at him and picked up the pace.

the all for the game series is my favourite ya book series so i will always recommend that, its about a fake sport and the mafia. i cant talk about it because its a hyperfixation and i care way too much

red white and royal blue was the best romance i read last year, its genuinely really funny and sticks with you long after you finish it (mostly because “history, huh?”)

i liked holly blacks folk of the air (another ya fantasy series) way more than i expected to
