FFXIV 6.3 Thoughts and Feelings - Heavy Spoilers (kind of turned into a weird rant? sorry)

First off I feel generally pretty positive about 6.3, I liked it, Euphrosyne was nice, I'm not in a 'Everything is going downhill' mood at all, I'm thriving, Bunny Boys finally have short hair, I'm super excited for Eureka Orthos (bc of the music q.q my favorite ff theme is comingggg)

...but...

I'm hardly the first person to point out that the writing in 6.3 was... pretty meh.

And I had a bit of a thought about why it felt like that, because on the surface, I'm fine with what happened. I like Zero and her arc about making friends and her starting to care about others, I like the reveal that the twelve + 1 are Venat's group (When they pointed out that the thirteenth god might be the moonwatcher I legit gasped, I don't know why, I began to care about this guy at some point and didn't even notice)

But like. All of the writing was kind of flavorless, which made it a bit boring tbh.

Zero learns the magic of friendship through another mo-cap eating animation bc people liked the Graha Burger scene i guess (what is it with Endwalker and animating eating please use that cutscene budget for something else I don't want to see it anymore)

Rubicante and Cagnazzo exist I guess. I love their designs and fights, but the other two had a little bit more build up and it shows imo. (We fought Scarmiglione twice, Barbariccia had a quest of voidsent being absolutely terrified of her arrival, with these two we only have "I have a plan Cagnazzo, come with me")

All of the Twelve are friends :) No conflict, no chaos, just happy people being absolutely unnuanced nice and non-controversial :)

Instead of actually learning about the gods we get to meet a weird cultist as a nod to 1.x whose conflict felt like we already did that thrice (at least i hope that was a reference, bc if it wasn't then why???) and we got a crumb of Krile development. Which is good and I love her. (I hope the 6.5 raid reveals her new outfit, If she isn't our company for the last raid I will be upset.)

I guess there's a lack of superfluous-ness in this patch that's usually there. Like in Lapis Manalis, one of the group (I think Y'shtola) goes to the village to search for lore/information/whatever. Usually the game would let you do that. "While Vrtra is sad, let's check out this village." And then you get to go around and the writers spoon feed us the lore we crave so much. It's superfluous in a good way.

Like imagine we go to a new place, we need to find something out, Y'shtola is with you when talking with a local. That local tells you "And as everybody knows Light Aether is black!" Cut to Y'shtola doing /ponder. "Interesting. Thank you for your time." The conversation ends and Y'shtola pulls you to the side and explains to you what exactly you were supposed to get in that situation. Actually, Light Aether is white, so why do they think otherwise? Here are some hypotheses based on the lore we know that either are correct or will explicitly be ruled out later on.

Of course we could also come to all those conclusions ourselves - and in another questline game you would be expected to do that work for yourself. And in my opinion both of these approaches are perfectly fine - But since ffxiv generally does it one way it needs to be done on purpose if you suddenly do it differently. Especially if you suddenly stop doing it from one patch to the other in the main story.

But this time Y'shtola comes back and tells you: "No, I looked and there's nothing here worth mentioning." Get a barrel and carry some fuel. You don't get to learn more about Galatea the Puppetmaster or Drusilla's home or some weird new piece of Reaper lore. Go and reread the three notes in the Dungeon if you want that. We have stuff to do so go ahead and waste play time with this engaging filler quest.

The gods say "Yes, what people tell, feel and think about us affects us and our being." And then nothing happens. No examples given, even though several are kind of right there and it's a lot weirder that they don't adress them. Not even something basic like "Althyk and Nymeia are siblings, some people think they had children together, but that's actually not true." And of course nothing like "For example, Nophica and Halone were actually good friends, but the stories of the people literally created hatred between them and turned them into rivals, even though nothing actually happened between them."

I am bitter they erased their feud. Justice for Nophica.

Anyways, that's a lot of words to say "It was fine." To me it's at most a worrisome precedent, but I doubt this will continue? Again, the general outline is fine, it's just filling the gaps between it that didn't work out great. They probably just took it easy on this patch or something, who knows what happened behind the scenes. Maybe XVI needed help with something, maybe somebody quit, we'll never know.

And even if this continued, the music and the art design continues to amaze me and they'll have to do a lot of things wrong to make me consider dropping this game anytime soon lol

Requests open, don't worry. It's a lovely ask, I hope you like it. I am writting considering the context, most are demons in the XX century that have lived at least 100 years, all of them from JAPAN. If it wasn't because most of this guys are freaks, none of them would approve.

Gyutaro:

Gyutaro loves your asthetic, it's almost the opposite of the traditional japanese beauty standards and he's all for it. He thinks it suits you a lot and he is not bothered when you want to show off a inked skin or too much skin. (He specially loves tattoos, thinks it's genial that marks on the body can be artistic, he is always nervious to touch them but you can see he wants to).

If you want to share a t-shirt, lend him some jewelry, put a choker in his neck, paint his nails or make him a fake tattoo (his regeneration would ruin a real one), then he is reasy for you to dress him up. (Even the lipstick, he is all for messy kisses and the more the merrier) With you as a partner he would start to incorporate some of this things to his everyday style (and Daki would loath you for it.)

Gyokko:

Gyokko is conflicted, he likes the gothic style, adores it even. The themes, the dark colors, the uniqueness, it's a great asthetic. But it's not his asthetic. He likes colors, soft patterns, brightness. And of course Gyokko can't have it if it's not about himself, not that he minds. "Some things must be loved from afar. It's like art, you are not supposed to interact or be part of it if you are not the artist. You are just supposed to appreciate it."

He fully supports the way you look, the way you dress, and he might try to wear dark make up every once in a while with you doing it as a bonding experience, if you have something really nice then jewelry is a must, specially the choker (he feels sexy with it)... but besides that, he would barely touch it. Also, you better keep your mouth away with that lipstick.

Hantengu:

It suits you, he doesn't have any strong opinion about it besides that. If that is what you want to wear, please do. But he got to admit there are things he is rather intimidated by in your style, the dark colors everywhere and memento mori themes are one of those.

He would not let you near with any of your things, not even the nail painting. Still, he would be plainty supportive of you expressing yourself. He is ok with the lipstick, though, it causes no harm.

Sekido:

Sekido is ok with it, it's the way you express yourself and dress is none of his business. He doesn't really like it but still thinks it's much better than dressing like Karaku or Urogi. He doesn't mind anything you do tl yourself as long as you like it.

And if you ever think of lending him something... don't, at best he will not use it, at worst he will give it to Urogi or Karaku and you will never see that piece of clothing/jewelry again. And try to put any make up on him he will literally have you shocked untill you pass out. Also, please clean the lipstick off if you want a kiss, he doesn't like them that messy.

Karaku:

Karaku thinks it's beautiful and sexy, he loves it a lot and is unafraid to say it. The second he saw you he said "Damn, you're looking good, hot-stuff. Suits you so much I'm almost envy it." He falls in love with you again evertime you expose a tattoo (he will trail the drawing with his index as he whispers how much he loves it in yoour skin by your ear) or wear tight and black clothes.

Don't mind him matching your style every once in a while, when he gets the mood to fix himself. But now that you gave him the idea he is forever using a choker, best thing ever. Also, he loves the black lipstick, he is enamored with kissing you with both having some and creating a mess, also he likes it since is extremely visible in his unlike bitemarks (they heal), so he is all for you kissing anywhere you like with it.

Urogi:

Urogi adores it, he thinks it's unique. Really, he gets all over you and asks you things like "What is that?" "How did you get it?" "Is it uncomfortable?" He also comments how it looks good in you. This includes the tattos, he loves then, even licks them at times lnly to see if it rubs off and is always amazed when it doesn't, even if he ever licked that same spot a million times.

After a while you realize he started to steal your stuff, specially the jewelry. He doesn't even wears them, he just likes them a lot so he keeps them. You can't get him to wear anything at all, he will run away at the sight of you wanting to dress him up (like a dog realizing it's bath-day, maybe he does think you will force him into a shower cuz he stinks a bit and you would not want to wear a shirt that he just used).

Aizetsu:

Aizetsu likes it, he thinks you look nice in it, you look like yourself. Dark clothes fit anyone, he thinks, and damn him if he isn't attracted to the themes, specially the memento mori. The thing he loves the most are the tattoos, the fact that they are part of you. He asks about their meaning, of why did you choose certain design, of the experience, he uses them as a way to know you.

Now, he wouldn't actually wear that. While he also likes dark clothes, he uses only things that are comfortable for his skin and to do the katas with his spear. But... a little bullying and he will be willing to match with you for a while. Oh, and he looks adorable after a messy kiss with the lipstick. He loves it and hates it at the same time, since it's awful but he likes that you can leave a mark that won't heal so he doesm't want to clean it off.

Nakime:

Nakime is in love with your style, she doesn't understand it as much as she feels she should, since he also wears black. She likes the themes, adores the tattoos (even if she would die before letting a needle basically embroider ink into her skin), dies for the make up and jewelry, also the fact she literally fell in love with you when she saw you like that... she still hasn't managed to integrate herself fully into it. She adores it, yearns it, but it's not hers.

Still, Nakime does like when you lend her something, and she would use them from time to time as long as you guide her through the style. And she likes a lot to kiss if you are both wearing lipstick, even if she doesn't like to deal with the mess it leaves in the skin.

Akaza:

Akaza doesn't share the taste, but he is very supportive. He likes to see you dress up the way it makes you comfortable and happy, and he is not above gifting you a gothic piece of jewelry or cloth if that will make you happy. His biggest issue are the tattoos, for some reason they make him feel on edge (you are used to him being paranoid of you being hurt, but fearing it out of a tattoo?)

He would not wear none of those, never. Akaza loves you, but he is not comfortable with the idea of so much black in him. It's actually funny because he wears white and pink, so you give the Jade (you) and Kat (him) vibe from Victorious at first glance. Also, he is not going to stop you from kissing hin if you wear lipstick, but he is cleaning his mouth the second your lips leave his.

Douma:

Douma literally doesn't care. You could both dress in the most expensive suit or a trash bag and the same reaction. "You look lovely in that!" But he says it mostly because it's the correct thing to say, since he doesn't have feelings on the matter. The only think he is curious about are the tattoos, but once he made some questions like "Did it hurt?" "Why this drawing?" "What if one day you don't like it anymore?" He starts losing interest.

He also doesn't care lf you put anything on him, you could give him a tattoo if you ever wanted. He doesn't care if the kisses might get messy with the lipstick or even if you want to put make up in him, at best he will think having his face "painted" is funny and at worst he will clean it off. Douma just doesn't care.

Kokushibou:

Kokushibou hates it, if he wasn't a demon he would have died from a heart attack everytime he saw you using a choker with black lipstick, visible tattoos, clothes too tight in your skin and/or too revealing (he thinks too revealing is showing your shoulders, thighs, any tiny bit of chest, waist, back and so) and way too many accesories for his liking. And don't get him starting with the memento mori themes (he's terrified by it).

This is a japanese traditional man, and what your style is almost the exact opposite of it. Still, he barely comments on it, he's a very quiet man, and he's so horrified he doesn't know how to approach because... you really like to be like that??? [Go to sleep gramps 😂] If you ever put anything gothic on him, no matter what, even if it's just the figure of your lips with the black lipstick, forget the canon timeline, he will die then and there. [Poor grampa, your youth is too much for him 🤣]

The "ITS ME CASSIDY" is revealed through.... manipulated text. The clues are in........ manipulated text. "It's Me" is CC calling out to Michael. The other spirit says "My name is..." a couple times BUT they also ask CC if he remembers his name just a few pages before. A bit of a random tangent, but since I had someone bring up recently in replies something on how I draw bellies, I just wanted to get a bit of a personal thought here

I think one thing people really don't get about anatomy (probably because of over-exposure to media that just refuses to acknowledge bellies existing at all on rail-thin ladies) is that people have bellies. Most people do. It's not even a sign of fatness. It's just a part of a lot of people's anatomy. Like, sure: You can get flat stomachs every now and then. Some people may naturally be more prone to them, and some people do specific training routines just to get that look, but the grand majority of people don't.

I've been underweight most of my life (I'm in a much healthier point now!), but I sat under 90lbs (I'm 5'4'') (40kg/162cm for the metric squad) most of my life. And I had a belly. Like- I don't feel comfortable sharing pictures of myself, but at that weight, I really stood out as unhealthily thin in photos. I would get told that by friends, constantly. People would worry I had some eating disorder. I didn't- I'm just the kind of person who doesn't eat much when anxious, but it was never a self image thing or anything, but it was still a huge deal.

But I had a belly. You could easily see the ribs on my torso, bones poking from pretty much everywhere, and while- Sure, I could easily suck it in or cover it with clothes, I still naturally had a belly. Because that's what happens, because there's organs there, because you get plump when you're on your period (for those who do), or literally just because it's there.

When I decide to give a character a belly it isn't even just about "I like to draw bigger bodytypes", because a lot of these people are fairly average in weight. It's a matter of "hey, this is a part of someone's anatomy". I remember having someone cause a fuss on a reddit post on how I drew someone's belly- He insisted that bellies Only Look Like That if you're "either been pregnant or heavily overweight but lost a lot of fat", and I was losing my mind because no, that was referenced on how my belly looked when I wasn't even average weight. But when you start expecting the average woman to look like whatever is going on at league of legends, well.

Anyhow, yeah. This isn't much of a post other than a reminder about how bellies exist, and they do even on underweight people. there's insane expectations on how the body looks (specially for women), and people end up forgetting what does a real body look like.

Okay, it's time for my thoughts on Dragons Rising part 2. (This is super long by the way.)

I'll get into my Cole rant in a bit because, oh boy, do I have things to say. But Soras story feels too important to leave for last.

Sora's story can reach out to so many different people that have issues with their parents and that kids really don't owe their parents anything. Sora is one of THE BEST role models I've ever seen in a cartoon. The fact that all her problems still weren't solved when she cut contact with her parents is realistic. The fact that they didn't give her parents a redemption was satisfying. And her just actually coming to the conclusion that she doesn't need to have her biological family in her life was beautiful. You are able to choose your family, and Sora showed that perfectly. Her character is amazing, and I don't even have the words to describe how absolutely beautiful her character is. She is perfect, and it makes me all emotional and stuff. I love her 😢

Arin has so much potential, and I think his whole spinjitzu thing is super important and cool. I think he'll get the MK treatment, maybe get thrown into an identity crisis, the works. Maybe he has a whole chosen one thing like Lloyd, who knows. All I know is that I love him and his little fan boy heart.

Kai and WyldFyres relationship is so great. I love seeing how far Kai has come and him referencing Nya becoming the ocean and how Master Wu helped him work through his emotions. This was exactly what the show needed. And having Kai be WyldFyres mentor was a fantastic choice because they are seriously alike in many way. Their struggle with not being patient and their hot headedness just gives me life. Kai has a freaking kid, and there little reunion hug was so freaking cute oh my god!!!!

I felt like Nya should have had a worse reaction to seeing a Djinn again. She was definitely traumatized from that, but maybe this was also some good closure for her, seeing that not all Djinn are evil creepy monsters. Nya and Soras' relationship is cool, too

Zane needs some more done with him. I need them to address the weird egg thing he hatched out of, but hopefully, it will be resolved soon. I think Zane got pushed to the side a bit, and it felt like he was jumping everywhere (like, he was just, at the administration? I know he got in trouble for portal stuff, but..... yeah). I'm sure he will get something eventually.

Lloyd is someone I never know how to talk about because he's just such a main character that it makes him less interesting to me. Don't get me wrong I love him, and him working on becoming the master of the monetary is cool and stuff. But he still needs a form of closure from past seasons, especially with garmadon. Unless they never bring him back then that's chill. I love garmadon but he always causes so much problems. Lloyd is learning how to be a good teacher though and that's really sweet.

Jay is a sassy shit Manger, and I love it. Can't wait to see more with him.

And Cole........ Cole is perfect in everything single way, and no one can deny that. Like actually, if someone doesn't like Cole from Ninjago, that's a red flag. He ended up in the place of lost things. THATS PERFECT FOR HIM! Cole Who almost got forgotten by everyone he loves, who literally ran away from home. It's perfect! He's perfect! He's the best! I love him! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! And now he's going on his own mission to follow Master Wus voice and figure out why the earth is screaming?!?!? God I love him. He's the best 😢

Also, I've had thoughts and ideas about Cole hearing the earth screaming, and I'm SUPER curious to see what that means.

Okay, now that I've ranted about how perfect Cole is...... I need to say it.

People are talking about how Cole just straight up left him to chase master Wu, but I'm positive that Cole either talked to the others beforehand or right after leaving Nya about it. About how he would totally come back for them and figure out some way for them to leave the land of lost things and get in all those good tearful see you laters.

If Geo doesn't come back I will fucking riot. And I'm not one to swear super often. Mostly for dramatic effect. So you know I'm serious. Geo and Cole left me feeling high for days. I need them in my life. They can't just introduce new characters and then LEAVE THEM!!?!?!!?!!!?

Anyways, my full ale thought on Dragons Rising.

It was good. It felt risky at first to add all these new characters, especially main ones but they did it perfectly. I love me a well paced story that doesn't feel like it's going to fast or slow. Beatrix's story is very interesting but I'm still super excited to see what happens with my boy Lord Ras. He's just so cool and evil and stuff :D I wonder who his boss is?

The show felt somewhat nostalgic but also super fresh and the writing was good.

When reading comics, how easily can you tell the actual Big City-dwelling writers from the suburbanites?

Not at all! The giveaways in fic are usually things like having the characters drive everywhere and never take public transportation, huge apartments, and going to school with the same kids from kindergarten through high school. (And to be clear, I'm talking about New York norms specifically - other cities are Big but have way more driving, for example. What's true about my life in New York is not true about, say, LA.) That stuff either rarely comes up in comics, or is handwaved away with, like...of course Bruce Wayne drives everywhere and has a massive amount of real estate, but he's not the average Gothamite.

Also, comics are drawn. Maybe the writer wasn't picturing a believable city block when they wrote the script, but if the artist draws a believable city block, it doesn't matter what the artist had in mind.

(Side note 1: Silver Age comics "cities" look incredibly suburban to me, which isn't a surprise since a house in the suburbs was the American Dream then. But like. Central City is barely a city, to me.)

(Side note 2: I do get a kick out of artists photo-referencing famous NYC buildings for DC's various fictionopolises. Like the ones who put the Flatiron and the Central Park reservoir in Central City - I see you, dude! You can't fool me! OKAY So, I'm not responding to the asks directly because I don't have any interest in engaging with people whose sole purpose in this space seems to be cruelty BUT this is really starting to piss me off, so I will address it I guess. Someone asked me if the Queen's death would be mentioned in the next KYD chapter and I responded with "Sirius doesn't die in KYD" Then someone wrote me saying "isn't that homophobic?" To which my first response was "What?" But I screen shotted a bit from the first chapter of Choices, which is what, in my head, I was referencing, in which Sirius dramatically enters the train compartment and Remus says something along the lines of "Do you have to announce yourself everywhere you go like the goddamn Queen" and Sirius replies "I am the Queen" and goes on to say something about how you've never seen the two of them in the same place so you can't prove that he's not the queen. This is a joke about Sirius having an inflated sense of self worth, the type one might expect from the monarch of a country it has literally nothing to do with his sexual orientation AT ALL BUT I do understand that my response to that ask could also be taken as a reference to Sirius being "a queen" as in, a flamboyant gay man, and I was aware of that when I wrote it Here's the thing, as a queer person myself, as someone with queer friends who hangs out in queer spaces this joke just feels cute and light hearted to me? Nothing about it was malicious or meant to be degrading, and I feel like the tone and context makes that pretty clear? I took down my response to the ask saying this was homophobic not because I don't agree with my response but because I just don't want to engage with the people on here who seem to get a kick out of harassing others. "humph! at least you're raising your pokémon!" blue you are so funny. the fact that he gets lumped in with the "asshole rivals" is funny in general because even if his delivery is less than nice half the time he sounds less like he's TRYING to be mean and more like he's just trying to aggravate red. i mean in comparison to rivals like silver and bede...blue REALLY doesn't sound "mean" at all. and again he words it rudely but he's still kind of. giving advice sometimes. like in this line:

"So how's your POKEDEX coming? I already caught 40 kinds, pal! Different kinds are everywhere! Crawl around in grassy areas!"

and pointing him in the direction of bill where red can go to eventually get the ss ticket. and another couple of lines that kind of make me laugh are these:

"What kept you RED? Hahaha! I thought you'd turn up if I waited here! I guess TEAM ROCKET slowed you down! Not that I care! I saw you in SAFFRON, so I decided to see if you got better!"

(after being beaten) "Oh ho! So, you are ready for BOSS ROCKET!"

he literally pulls a "NOT THAT I CARE!" line and then he immediately admits that he battled red to make sure he was ready to face off against giovanni. and it's like. well CLEARLY you do care otherwise you wouldn't BE here dumbass. and then he even tells red good luck when he leaves! he says it's cool that red got all eight badges! he even willingly admits that red is the new champion of his own volition!

there are just sooo many moments that jump out to me that really do paint a picture of the fact that they used to be friends and even with blue's recent attitude change (referenced in the red/blue manuals, kiiiind of seems like it was made worse by professor oak's blatant favoritism of red in the games) neither of them have really. let go of that fully? it's not like blue is a friendly rival but he certainly isn't a total asshole rival either. he's just. a rival! that used to be red's friend! and even though the gap between them is getting wider and wider throughout the game that friendship is Still There! and then when you consider blue's call in hgss (as well as the fact that he starts out a good majority of his calls with "Hello…Whatever… Don't worry about me."):

"I'm Blue. Man, this guy called Red brought me down in a heartbeat. I haven't seen him in a long time...I wonder where he is and what he's up to… Come to think of it, you look a little bit like Red. Yeah, you do. Just...Just a little bit. Whatever..."

he misses him!!! he misses him so badly!!!! and i would bet money that red was at the top of mt. silver thinking the EXACT same thing about him because. literally according to the game manual itself. red only became interested in pokémon after blue stopped being his friend! and when you put it in that perspective his whole journey was pretty much him chasing after blue like he was trying to get him to acknowledge him again. it's just so!!! sad!!! because they Care about each other but there's just this Block for a while that keeps them from reconciling. they can act as rivals all they want they still get absolutely miserable the moment they're separated from each other.

Is Buck the narrator for all three most recent "lore albums" or something? I don't know how Lonesome Dreams fits into the storyline, but I might be wrong, and I'm pretty sure the movie soundtrack doesn't. I'm pretty sure he's the narrator for at least Vide Noir, but I'm not sure how he fits in with Long Lost.

If Buck is Strange Trails' narrator, he's not the only one, because Hurricane is from Johnnie's, and The World Ender is from Cobb Avery's. The Yawning Grave seems to be told by some malevolent, omniscient, ancient entity I don't really have a name for, but seems an awful lot like whatever Ender was summoned in Secrets of Life. It's almost like a camera pan effect with the transition to Frozen Pines, almost as if the focus is being shifted to a different character. I'm not entirely sure who that character is, and I'm not all up to date on the lore yet.

There's such a heavy focus on darkness being bad in Strange Trails, and then as far as I know, Vide Noir(the album) is about a guy, Buck Vernon, abusing a substance literally named Black Void, and trying to find his fiancee. Frozen Pines feels like Buck coming back to himself after taking Vide Noir, it basically references the Emerald Star without actually referencing it. It's like Buck talking to Lee; he'll be waiting for her, he's gonna look for her everywhere, etc.

Relistening to Strange Trails specifically looking for Vide Noir references, after Meet Me in the Woods there is SUCH a tone shift, and it starts referencing how he can't go back from the darkness, or how everything she touches turns to back.

This whole exposition has morphed into me actually asking if Vide Noir and Strange Trails are the same story from different perspectives or in different settings. Apologies for the rambling.

It is very okay! It is more than okay, it's great and I would answer Lord Huron questions every day all day if more people did this. ;)

I'm impressed with how much of this you've worked through pretty damn close to accurately without having checked the wiki or watched the movie, haha. I definitely recommend doing both as most of your questions here, the ones we have answers to anyway, will get answered.

But in short, without rewriting the entire wiki for you:

Strange Trails, Vide Noir, and Long Lost are all in the same universe with shared characters that weave in and out of those albums and there are many narrators among them. Buck Vernon is probably the closest thing to a main protagonist since his narration features heavily in Strange Trails and Vide Noir, but he's absent from Long Lost (well, as far as anyone can tell anyway).

Strange Trails is sort of like a loose connection of stories that establish a lot of the strange things and the characters in that universe and start us off learning about Buck and Lee and their relationship, but we also get a lot from Frankie Lou, the World Enders, and a handful of others. Some of the songs narrated by one character about their life in-universe tell stories that are shared in common with other characters (and the music video for The Night We Met in particular shows us this well - that song is by Frankie Lou and appears to be describing her doomed relationship with Z'Oiseau, but the video primarily focuses on Buck on his drive west toward California to find Lee).

Vide Noir is slightly more linear and slightly more focused on Buck specifically, except for where it's nonlinear and also has a whole bunch of World Enders/Phantom Riders narration which probably is doing the dual purpose thing again, describing what they're up to while also "coincidentally" helping describe Buck's confusion, anger, and anguish as he searches for Lee, gets black-brained and survives, and finds Lee only to learn that yes she did mean to leave him and she doesn't love him.

But you're absolutely right to dive back in to Strange Trails and look for references to vide noir because they're everywhere - Meet Me in the Woods is a great example of this, though it's primarily describing Frankie's experience with the drug in that case.

The Strange Trails album liner notes were very specific about which songs were performed by which characters and who the narration is supposed to be, so I recommend checking that out in the wiki as a starting point. Vide Noir didn't give us that so it has mostly been a matter of interpretation (though it's easy-ish to sort out which are performed by the Buck Vernon Band and which are performed by the Phantom Riders - but if there are other narrators in there it's still not totally clear and Moonbeam is sort of an odd track out in particular).

Long Lost mostly has told us which characters performed which songs again, which is nice and helpful! And the music/lyric videos have been a big help yet again, as has Alive from Whispering Pines, which obviously also deserves a watch if you haven't seen that series yet.

Anyway, hope this helps - I know some of it boils down to "time to read the wiki" but it just saves me from having to re-type the wiki, haha.

story update time! most of this is from yesterday when i was calling a friend on discord lmao. i got to celestic town and after talking to all the npcs i advanced the story

man cyrus really thinks in black and white huh. like there's either full balance with no change, or he has to rewrite the entire world in his ideal image or whatever. can very much see why his, essentially, cult recruitment works so well. it's bold and sounds noble and cuts out nuanced thought lol

at first i was slightly taken aback by the implication that change = bad at all, but after coming back to these screencaps i am pretty sure she means fundamental change with how the human spirit etc works, in reference to cyrus wanting to literally rewrite the universe and the mural of the lake trio behind everyone here

and of course his threat in this situation is the destruction of an ancient illustration of the deities he seeks to control and destroy. not only is that symbolic for obvious reasons but this is an adult man with supposedly more power than you (a child) and the elderly person next to you who is able to fuck up a cave wall with his pokemon or whatever. he's trying to intimidate you. i won of course btw lol

further confirming my thoughts earlier, cynthia's grandma goes on to say that sinnoh is filed with the memories and thoughts of countless people and pokemon... why would anyone want to change those memories or thoughts? the world IS wonderful actually. the indomitable human spirit etc. and pokemon spirit SSFDKSDFKS

anyways ty for the surf HM SDFKSFDKSFD i somehow forgot to take a picture of it but she mentions that the HM belonged to cynthia, but she doesn't use it anymore. i'm assuming this means cynthia either has all her surf users, has spare surf HMs, or literally just flies everywhere. regardless i just think that's cool. my surf HM is the one cynthia used once a long while back. Neat!

oh and last time i posted about story i made a joke about how nonchalant everyone is about terrorism but i forgot this dialogue happens after the encounter with cyrus in the cave LMAO i really wasn't wrong, that was intentional! cynthia says straight out that she thought they were harmless. everyone is treating galactic like delinquent teenagers spouting nonsense who aren't actual threats. especially after the bomb that went off in the great marsh caused little to no damage, i guess. sinnoh isn't routinely experiencing great threats of violence or threats of destabilizing the region.

after our conversation cynthia recommends me to go to canalave city to check out the library and whatnot, which i can now do because i have surf, but first here's the dialogue when interacting with the dialga and palkia murals. i just think it's neat

i did indeed visit the library and since it's been a while since i paid attention in here i actually re-read all the sinnoh myth books. i'm not going to show them as screenshots here since there's way too much text and i don't have interesting things to say about all of it, but all of their text is written out word-for-word here on Bulbapedia if you've never read them before and want to check them out

i do have a FEW stray thoughts though...

in "Sinnoh's Myth" about the lake trio it says:

Bearing with them the power to make vast lands, they rise again.

as far as i know this is the only time that the trio are referenced to have the power to "make vast lands" which feels kind of out of place. like these are the beings of knowledge, emotion, and willpower, not land sea and sky like the hoenn trio or something LOL this really just feels like a throwaway line without much meaning? perhaps you could interpret as them giving people the power to create land but that's a stretch. it is probably not that deep and just awkward writing tbh

in "Veilstone's Myth" it says:

Asked he, "Why do you hide?" To which the Pokémon replied... "If you bear your sword to bring harm upon us, with claws and fangs, we will exact a toll." "From your kind we will take our toll, for it must be done." "Done it must be to guard ourselves and for it, I apologize."

there is the interpretation that this is about Giratina since veilstone is the closest city to Turnback Cave where you can find giratina, and at the end of the myth it says "Seeing this, the Pokémon disappeared to a place beyond seeing..." which could be a reference to the distortion world. however, i think there's also a counter-argument to be had here since giratina is considered forgotten by sinnoh as a whole and later in the game cynthia remarks on how it is missing in the myths - she spends a good chunk of the game researching this in the background. so it'd be kinda weird if there was just something directly written about dialogue from giratina in the library.

HOWEVER that being said i think it's definitely still Possible and if it is true that this is about giratina, it puts giratina in a more sympathetic light. i jokingly call giratina Pokemon Satan a lot (in reference to him being the "evil" one as opposed to arceus, not an actual deep reference to christianity or the actual story of satan) but this frames giratina's actions as well intentioned or in self defense, which makes him a lot more interesting as a deity imo. personally i'm not sure whether i believe this is about giratina or not

lastly, while this is well known i still wanna talk about it, in "A Horrific Myth" it says:

Look not into the Pokémon's eyes. In but an instant, you'll have no recollection of who you are. Return home, but how? When there is nothing to remember? Dare not touch the Pokémon's body. In but three short days, all emotions will drain away. Above all, above all, harm not the Pokémon. In a scant five days, the offender will grow immobile in entirety.

this is pretty directly referencing uxie (knowledge), mesprit (emotion), and azelf (willpower) in that order. portraying the lake trio as dangerous and powerful entities that can literally wipe your memories or take away your emotions is interesting juxtaposition to them supposedly being the ones that blessed humans with the ability to feel joy, have memories, and do things... and not only that, they don't seem to want to use that dangerous power either, but it seems to be out of their control - uxie has its eyes always closed (so you can't look into its eyes), mesprit flees from you (that's why it's a roamer) and azelf is able to enter someone else's body (to avoid harm). they're probably so damn secluded in these lake caves so that they don't hurt anyone. they're good natured gods i suppose

sinnoh mythology is very cool and why i love this region so much but anyway i'm going to make a Gameplay Update post as well in a bit SDFKSF

"You can't cry in there." The voice is raspy and muffled through the door. The pounding of a fist against it, though, is louder. Vince leans over, elbows on his knees and his hands pressed against his face. His palms are sweaty, it trickles down the back of his neck to soak into his t-shirt, joining the damp spots already growing. Designer shirts soak up sweat and tears just like the cheap ones, in the end.

He doesn't answer the voice.

Maybe if he doesn't answer, it'll just go away, and leave him here to be miserable and self-pitying and all the things the podcasts his old therapist used to tell him to listen to tell him not to be. Visualize self-confidence growing within you, like you've planted a seed of understanding...

He might be laughing, now. It's sort of hard to tell, because tears are still dampening his cheeks underneath his palms. His shoulders are shaking, just like his hands.

"I don't understand anything," He mutters, and wonders how many people would hate him if they knew the truth, that Vincent Shield is hiding in a house in a poor neighborhood, that he loathes his fortune and fame, that it was never worth the price he agreed to pay.

It had never been worth the deal he and Carlotta Grant had agreed to, it had never been worth all the nights he sat up drinking until he drowned out the voice of Owen against his ear. It wasn't worth Kauri's desperate dying struggle to survive on top of him. It wasn't ever worth it.

God, he wants a drink.

He needs a drink.

A moment later, the pounding starts up again. "Hey! I said you can't cry in there!"

Vince groans, sitting back up and rolling his head back to stare up at the ceiling as he drops his hands, silently entreating the flat off-white tile marked with evidence of a half-dozen repairs made over the decades to somehow intervene with him on this.

Nothing happens.

"Why the hell can't I?" He asks, willing his voice to stay calm and even. It only wobbles a little. He's sort of proud of that.

Once an actor, always an actor. Good job, Shield, too bad you're pretty sure you'll never act again.

"Because the other bathroom's broken, remember? Go cry somewhere else, literally anywhere fucking else, dumbass!"

Vince pushes to his feet, reluctantly, and goes to the door, pulling the little hook up to unlock it. It swings open inside on creaky old hinges, and he's face to face with Nat's only current resident runaway. "Fine. I'll go. Hope you're happy."

"I wasn't made for happiness." Jameson's eyes narrow, searching his face. "You look like shit, Shield."

"Thanks," Vince says heavily, moving past him into the hallway. "You look like someone got real drunk and took a lawn mower to your head and the grass just started growing back in."

He waits for the vitriol Jameson will spit, but there's only silence. Vince makes it a few steps before guilt makes him turn back, mouth open to apologize.

But Jameson doesn't look angry. Instead, he's looking at him over his shoulder. And he's smiling, crooked and pulled up more on one side than the other, emphasizing a deep scar from some long-ago blade. "Hey, so you do have a spine. Nicely done."

"Uh... thanks. Look, I'm sorry, I'm just having some trouble-"

"We're all having trouble. I've said worse things to better people. Just... you know what, come on." Vince, despite being about ten years older, is pulled along like a child when Jameson grabs him by the wrist, down the upstairs hallway to a room at the end of the hall. When the door opens, Vince is hit with the smell of old paper, books and dust and time. The room's a disaster area - just piles of storage. A giant old wooden desk with boxes and boxes on top of it. There's boxes stacked everywhere, some half-open, some closed. Yellowing papers half-fall from old photo albums.

"Wh-... what-"

"You can cry in here," Jameson says, letting his arm drop and gesturing inside. "I do. Or my closet, but this is a good spot, because you're alone and people mostly don't look. You can get under the desk, or, like, look real sad out the window... I get it. This is where I go when I want to think about him but I don't want to talk about him, you know?"

Vince's throat tightens, and he has to swallow past the growing constriction. His bruises are fading, now, but the memory of Owen's hands around his throat never seems to leave. He looks over at a framed photo on the wall, black-and-white, of two people that look immensely unhappy squinting out at whoever held the camera. "Him?"

"Yeah. Mine was a 'him'. Yours is that Owen motherfucker. There's always somebody to cry about, right? And... I don't know. You, uh. You seem like maybe you loved yours, a little bit, too."

"No, I-... I didn't want him like th-that-... I told him no-"

"I didn't say that you wanted to fuck him, Shield. I just said maybe you loved him a little, before all the trying to murder you shit." Jameson shrugs. "Fuck off if you don't like it, it was just a thought. Just trying to help, fuck me for trying."

This time, when he turns to go, Vince is the one who grabs his arm with one hand. Jameson turns to look back at him, and Vince searches his face, trying to understand what he sees there. Derision, dismissal, but something like compassion, too.

"Wait," Vince says, and his voice is hoarse. He can feel tears all over again, and he fights hard to push them down. How was it always so easy to cry on command in the movies, but he can't control shit now that he's here and it's over? "Wait, just. I'm sorry. You're right. He was my-... my best friend, when we were kids. He was my... my only real friend, ever, before Nat."

"That creep was your only friend? That's really fucking sad," Jameson says, and they both laugh - Vince the airy breathy laughter of someone about to fall apart, and Jameson the barely-there sound of someone trying not to mock, just gently rib towards good humor.

"It is, oh my God, it is so fucking sad," Vince groans, and finds himself sliding to the ground, ignoring the spike of pain right up his spine. He isn't fully healed yet. It aches, in so many places. It aches deep inside of him worse. "We did everything together, for years. We were everything for-... for each other. For years. And I-... I had to-"

"I know." Jameson, with a grunt of pain of his own, slowly makes his way down to seated as well. He has to balance himself carefully, and Vince notices how his legs don't quite bend all the way, how he kicks them out to one side.

"Yeah, I just-... I thought I'd gotten away, and then he sent flowers and showed up at my house and then there was-... I thought he'd killed Kauri. I think he had his corpse on top of me, that it was over, it... It was like watching him murder me, from outside myself, like... like watching myself die under his hands, because I c-couldn't save me, and just... I had to-... I had to-"

"You did." Jameson nods, and when he reaches out Vince grabs onto his hands and holds tight. "You had to do it, Shield, I get it. I did it, too, twice. I'd do it again. But... but I get how it doesn't... leave your head, after, does it?"

"No," Vince says, and his voice breaks. His head drops as the sob escapes his attempts to hold it back, and he leans forward, with Jameson pulling him gently, until his forehead rests on the other man's shoulder, until his hands are gripped into the fabric of an old thrift-store t-shirt. Until the tears break through again and he doesn't quite drown, because someone else is holding him up. "I see it-... every night I see how he looked when I-... but I h-had to-"

"You had to," Jameson repeats, softly. He slides his arms slowly around Vince. "You had to, and Kauri's alive because you did. You saved a life."

"I took a life-"

"You saved Kauri's when you did. And yours. Sometimes the motherfuckers have to die so that you don't, that's how it works for us. And you never wore a collar, but you're one of us, or good as anyway."

"I murdered someone!"

"But he didn't get to murder you."

Vince clings to that small, slim thread of comfort, the single shining bright spot in the well of darkness within him. And Jameson holds on until Vince is ready - and able - to let go.

"Jesus, I want a drink so much," Vince says, and hates himself for the childlike whine in his voice, hates the way his mouth is dry and his hands keep shaking. "I just want a drink-"

"Sorry, no booze allowed," Jameson says, but there's no vitriol in his voice any longer. "But can I interest you in a can of Spam she has in the kitchen cabinets for some godawful reason? That's kind of like alcohol, in that it's probably really bad for your liver."

They both laugh again, and Vince shakes his head, hair brushing the side of Jameson's neck. "N-no thanks. But... thanks, Jameson."

"Yeah, whatever. Come in here if you want to cry, it's a good spot for it. But don't use the fucking bathroom for it anymore, at least 'til she gets the downstairs fixed."

"Right. God, I was living in a mansion before this-"

"Yeah, it was fuck-ugly and looked like if a refrigerator married the internet and had an awful baby. This house is better. Now, I need to go to the bathroom for real."

With another grunt of pain, Jameson pulls away to get to his feet, and Vince watches him leave, how he limps a little when he wasn't limping just a few minutes ago. How it must have cost him to get down on the floor and back up again.

He looks around at the room full of the passage of time, and exhales as he takes in the dust and the age of everything around him.

"Yeah," He breathes, and finds himself calming. "This house is better."

He didn't ask for this shit. sanji's kinda bleary as he comes to and he's like 'first of all, why the hell have you bastards kidnapped me?! second of all, why am i tied to a chair?' - This wasn't intentional but now every time I go back to this all I can think of is Sam from TGWDLM goin "Charlotte, baby, where am I, why am I tied to a chair?" the dude's like 'alright, slow down swirlylocks' sanji's like '…my hair isn't swirly' the dude's like 'shut up.' - Guy just needed the pun, leave him be. the other three are kinda like oy vey and one's like 'go get that damn manual, you buffoon. you must'a did it all kinds'a wrong if the person you tied up is complaining about the quality of your work!' - He's trying his best, alright? sanji's like '…that's a porn book. the naked people are naked cause it's porn.' the dude's like 'ohhh…' then he's like 'oh!' and chucks the book/comic thing away - Egads! after a few seconds he can only kinda weakly mutter out 'you're gonna... pay for... this' before he blacks out again as they all laugh insert full house music - Everywhere you look, everywhere you go, there's a face, of somebody who needs you- the childhood friend dude shows up at the railing off'a like, idk a fucking jetski or some shit - probably just a boat idk - Guy's a little wacky with it, shit happens. the childhood friend dude raises an eyebrow and smirks bemusedly like 'seriously, you're a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an igneous, dude' - Literally just quoting mlp at this point, boys 👍

zoro's fuckin dumbfounded and is just kinda dimly like 'y… you said all that about me, cook?' sanji turns to face zoro and is still bright red like 'shut the fuck up right now or i'll shove my foot so far up your ass you'll think you grew a second spine and i'll be wearing your tiny, mossy brain like an anklet' zoro huffs an amused breath, although still a bit shell-shocked, while ray's like 'oh yeah, he also said that your shoes are untied' zoro looks down at his shoes like 'huh?' - 1. Ray's the 'childhood friend dude' 2. He listed off a bunch'a shit Sanji had told him in letters. 3. 🤨🤨 nami just puts up an a-okay sign like 'don't care, sanji' robin just smiles and goes 'i can say with utmost certainty that they are in fact pieces of clothing that you are currently wearing, sanji' - R.I.P then law just fuckin shows up outta nowhere and they're all like 'wtf' - Uh-oh, surprise Law event. law just kinda grimaces, briefly glancing at luffy who's sorta struggling like a cockroach - He's a creature. A li'l guy, if you will.

luffy just mopes like 'but namiiii~ it looked like food, and i was hungryyy' usopp's just exhasperated like 'it was clearly made of polystyrene' luffy's like 'so?!' usopp's like 'polystyrene is not food!' luffy's just like 'you don't know that! just cause it made me throw up doesn't mean it wasn't food! lots of things can make you throw up! lobsters, crabs, goats!' - Nothing will stop me from constantly referencing everything all the time. (The 'lobsters, crabs, goats' part is in reference to TTO). 'also who're you calling uptight and swirly?!' zoro gets annoyed as well, smirking, and they do the head bonk grr thing, like 'who do you think, ammonite brows? you've got a stick shoved so far up your ass it got lost and bent itself over your eyes!' - Oof. and it's just a bit like crackaboom uh oh we can't deal with this well - Hate when that happens. and the dude's like 'not much' then he calls over this servant or whatever from their gang and bites his fucking fingers off - Really hate when that happens. then his eye gets like, sparkles in it, and he straight up explodes - Lost another one 😔

and zoro just kinda looks at his ass then narrows his eyes sorta fry-like and goes 'mhm…' - I call this piece 'Contemplation of a posterior.', the bidding will start at [REDACTED] zoro's off to the side having heart palpitations or some shit - Bitches and their heart problems, I swear. usopp, luffy, chopper and franky are just annoyed screaming while sanji's like 'JUST DIE ALREADY!' - Zoro is no longer held in high esteem by the council. then sanji's got a gun in one hand and it's straight up in zoro's mouth and he's still gripping the robe with the other hand and he's like 'I'M TELLING YOU-' - The idea of everything being relatively normal before one character suddenly has a gun and is threatening another out of nowhere is a brain worm that I can't remove. snooj blush more die sink down floor dead zoor like wha - wha then sanji goes 'so how'd you meet levy?' gajeel's like '…' then kinda like '…i crucified her' and sanji's just like 'excuse me-' - And that's how I met your mother. sanji just groans in agony and slumps down further before melting into goo (lesgooooo) - Lesgooooo and they flip over to brook and rip his whole fucking outfit into two equal sides and he's like 'yoho?!' then tiny text 'oh my?!' - Oh my. then he does like that fist pump thing and exhaling out his nose komi-san style and he's confident < - fool - 🫵 Fool.

I have been thinking a lot about The Internal Family Systems Theory as of late, and I couldn't help but notice that the DHMIS trio seem to fit each of the roles to a T.

Yellow Guy as a whole represents an Exile, or the suppressed part of the system burdened by extremely painful memories and feelings. He's had horrid flashbacks about an unknown life, and is followed by his father everywhere he goes. He has an inner world that he escapes to whenever he feels alone and unwanted. On top of that, his Brain Friends are the very definition of Exiles; or parts of Yellow's personality locked within his mind. His batteries, or his awareness, are considered a threat to Red Guy and Duck. The latter of the protectors frequently attacks Yellow Guy whenever he messes up. Even the song "We All Have A Worm In Our Brain", could be referencing an Exile.

Duck represents the Firefighter; or a protector of the system that fights against any external issues, and eases potential problems stemming from the Exile. He rebels against the teachers or even the others whenever they break the status quo or threaten their existence. He's the most emotionally reactive of the three, and has an explosive temper. He responds to Yellow Guy's life threatening injury by immediately taking action. Furthermore, he copes with their nightmarish existence by fixating on inanimate objects, especially his shredder, which they all enjoy using. He tends to keep his distance from Yellow Guy, and sticks by Red Guy. Finally, Duck outright idealizes being a leader of the Mililary.

Red Guy represents the Manager; or a protector of the system that maintains order. He attempts to maintain the illusion of control by critiquing the teachers if needed, and by acting as the mediator between Yellow Guy and Duck. He comforts Yellow Guy when the other is upset, and tries to reason with Duck. He attempts to escape when he feels like their situation is too much. He tends to clean the house to maintain structure within their chaotic environment. He tries to replace Duck to fill a void in their family. He also acts as a people pleaser whenever he's meets his own, or when someone praises him. Not to mention, he even takes on the literal role of a manager when the trio are in their jobs.

Where does that leave Lesley? I think she would represent the Self. She lacks total control, but she is above the trio, sheltered from their reality. She introduces real world concepts whenever she sees fit, and she is impartial to their suffering. Still, she appears to need the trio, not letting them escape from their dollhouse. The sense of Self is made out of Curiosity, Calm, Clarity, Connectedness, Confidence, Courage, Creativity, Compassion. Yet, she doesn't appear to be defined by any real traits at all, perhaps due to the constant infighting within the system. She even makes a comment that "(Yellow Guy) is not (her) son." If not her son, than perhaps her memories of him instead?

Of course, I don't mean any of this literally, but it's still interesting to think about all the same.
