Although everything takes place at Hogwarts and magic is involved, this is a way different society.

Women rule with courts, and Muggleborn Wixen Hermione Granger is very new to this world. But with her new best friend, Freak (Harry), a shy Druid, a sneering blonde with an eye for fashion, and an older boy who will answer the call of his Queen, Hermione will become unstoppable.

That's the best summary I can come up with. This is one of those world building within a world fics, LoL. But please give this a try. It's truly such a well-written story. And although Hermione and Marcus are the pairing, the actual romance doesn't start until much later when she is of age. Side Drarry for those of us with no self control.

Bonus points to this fic for a wonderfully dour but sympathetic Snape, and Hermione's parents, whose father may or may not be a retired hitman. They are "dentists" after all, as Snape is constantly reminded of when he visits the Granger residence.

The train platform where Hermione stood swarmed with people much like any other, but for one important difference.

“Platform 9 ¾” shone in shiny brass high above their heads. In-between and unseen, this was a gathering place for Britain’s magical population. They were here for the same reason as she–to embark on a journey to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. 

“Don’t forget to send word as soon as you’re settled in, honey.” Hermione’s mum hugged her tight. Her minty perfume was a comfort that Hermione breathed in deep.

“I will.”

Her dad followed up with the same advice he’d made shortly after they’d decided to send her off, then again as she packed, and even when they drove over earlier that morning. “Make sure you floss and brush your teeth every day as soon as you wake up and before you go to bed. The same goes for after you eat something particularly sweet, since we won’t be there to remind you.”

“Yes, Dad. I promise I won’t forget.” 

He wrapped her in his arms around them both from behind so she was sandwiched between them. Hermione felt a lump in her throat and struggled to hold back the tears that threatened to fall. It wasn’t like this was the first time she’d left on her own–there’d been summer camps and school trips. They weren’t near as long as a full term away, however, but she could be brave.

When they finally parted, she could no longer hold back a sniffle. She started when something soft pressed against her cheek. She grabbed onto it on instinct.

It was a handkerchief, light grey in colour and with M.F.F. stitched in navy blue initials at the corner.

“Keep it,” the boy standing in front of her said. He sounded as surly as he looked, with dark, heavy brows, a stubborn jaw, and teeth even more prominent than hers. He looked older than her by at least a few years, and she might have been scared if she wasn’t so surprised by him speaking to her at all. “You don’t want to be seen as a crybaby on your first day.”

He turned and boarded the train before she could reply.

“Thank you!” she called out. If he heard her, he didn’t show it.

Hermione wiped away her tears, then carefully folded the cloth before tucking it into her pocket. She’d clean and return it at the first opportunity. While there was no chance they’d share any classes, surely she’d run into him elsewhere in the castle.

To his surprise, she laughed in his face. - “Really, Draco? Did you think I fell for you? I knew about this bet with your friends from the beginning.”

“What?” - he managed to mumble before she patted him condescendingly on the shoulder. Turning around, he saw a smile on Hermione's face. A smile that shouldn't be there.

“Come on. Did you really think I fell for it? I had some fun with this bet, plus I didn't have to strain to fuck the Slytherin Sex God. By the way, I think the rumors about you are…” - she showed a gesture clearly meaning something small - “…a bit exaggerated.”

At that moment Hermione Granger turned around and, leaving the four surprised Slytherins, approached Harry Potter who, with a sour expression, handed her a bag full of Galleons. Ginny Weasley and Luna Lovegood patted her on the back with smiles.

At the end of the Gryffindor shouted - “Let's go shopping girls. And it's all because our Slytherin Prince was easier for me than the Muggle Studies test in my first year.”

The whole situation was observed by Severus Snape, who knew that the game had only just begun. However, even though he was Draco's godfather, he was sure that Hermione Granger won not only that round, but that she would win the war as well.

Writing Update

Going to try to do these a little differently from now on... I'll probably just edit and then reblog moving forward. Here is the update as of September 2024:

“Some,” Theo mumbled. If some was once, which it categorically was not. That one time hadn’t gone particularly well either.

Marcus flipped him over suddenly, causing Theo to release a rather embarrassing yelp. He’d never been manhandled before, but as the wizard above him caged him between his arms he found he liked it very much, indeed. A silver chain bearing an unordained and tarnished ring slipped out from the collar of Marcus’ shirt, trailing along the sensitive skin of Theo’s chest.

“Can I see all of you?” He shivered.

Marcus quirked his head, staring down at him hungrily. “What, are we making love now, Theodore?”

“That’s hardly what I’m asking for.”

Marcus sat up on his knees, looking about the room with that rare nervousness Theo couldn’t quite place. Biting his lip, he reached back to pull up the hem of his shirt. The reveal was achingly slow, but the results were only made more impressive by the anticipation. Pulling the fabric over his head, Marcus balled it between his calloused hands and tossed it into the corner.

Theo barely suppressed a groan. He’d seen statues of Greeks gods with less muscle definition, though Marcus didn’t carry it as bulk. His body seemed natural, as if he’d refined it through casual exercise and the tasks of daily life. Theo couldn’t help but look down at his own skinny figure and frown.

“Hey,” Marcus said, tilting Theo’s face up with the barest guidance of his fingers. His eyes softened as he ran the pad of his thumb along the angle of Theo’s jaw. “I don’t fuck ugly.”

Theo snorted, taking up the grin Marcus already wore on his face. “What a relief.”

Twin Snakes is a companion, prequel series to The Empress of all Maladies that tracks Theo and Marcus' torrid history through their sexual encounters. This is a standalone work, so you don't need to know anything about TEOAM to enjoy it. For those of you that read the main fic, this will provide some context, but it isn't mandatory.

Excerpt: Marcus stood shirtless in front of his mirror, perplexed at the sight that met his eyes.

His scars had been bothering him more as of late–essentially as soon as he’d moved back to England. He’d thought it a temporary nuisance at first. A rub to relieve the itch, cooling ointment when the urge to scratch strengthened.

The scars at his neck and chest looked almost fresh, the skin around them irritated and the places where he’d torn at it weeping.

“What the bugger is wrong with me?” he muttered.

Normally, he wouldn’t have cared so much and simply gone to a Healer for assistance. That was before Hermione. Now he felt like he was racing a timer, one that counted down to the next stage in their relationship.

Their previous date and conversation at dinner had only solidified his resolve to pursue the witch until she was his in both spirit and name. She was everything he should have appreciated when they were students, everything he almost didn’t think he deserved after how he’d treated her, how he’d abandoned her to the future he’d known was coming, but felt powerless to stop.

Thinking back to how gracious she’d been as he apologised–for ignoring her for years, for standing aside when others treated her and other Muggle-borns as lesser, and for running away to save his own hide–had Marcus feeling he’d been handed a once-in-a-lifetime chance to try again. He refused to squander the opportunity this time.

“Marcus, dear? Breakfast’s ready.” His mother’s invitation preceded the door creaking open.

Their eyes met in the mirror, and he didn’t think to cover himself before hers dropped and widened at the sight of his inflamed scars. She strode forward, hand to her lips.

“Mum, it looks worse than it is, really. I’m going to request an appointment with a Healer and–”

“How long have you been like this?” she asked, cutting him off.

“The scars started bothering me again pretty much when we moved back,” he admitted.

“And was it like it was before?”

She meant the way he’d get the irresistible urge to tear at his skin after a terrible ache. It only happened a few times, but the impulse was strong enough for him to recall them with great detail even now.

“Worse.”

Her expression turned shrewd then, narrowing on him as she measured her next words carefully. “Have you been meeting with someone new?”

"Aren't you going with Flint?" Parvati asked, a confused look on her face. "You guys are dating, right?"

Hermione's cheeks turned bright red at the suggestion. Her and Marcus? Dating? "Um, what are you talking about? We aren't..." she stumbled over her words, unable to say Marcus and the word dating in the same sentence. Well, she could admit that it was something that she'd be interested in — her crush on him had only grown stronger as she got older, seeing as she found him quite attractive and, of course, they got along smashingly — she was positive that Marcus would run away at the thought of it. Wouldn't he?

Lavender gave her a soothing smile, before crossing the room to wrap an arm around her shoulders. "You don't have to lie to us, Hermione," she said sweetly. "The whole school knows that you guys are dating. You don't have to hide it from Parv and me."

She had been too confused to do anything but nod. Did the whole school really think that she and Marcus were together? They did spend an awful lot of time together. Her mind couldn't help but produce the time that he'd taken her to Hogsmeade the year before and then holding hands and sharing an ice cream over the summer.

Maybe they were dating and she just hadn't noticed it.

Hermione and Marcus form a friendship that grows into more over the years…or at least that's what Hermione thinks! Can their friendship survive when Marcus thinks Hermione has moved on to bigger and better things?
