Warning! Pet illness, xray
A friend of mine a few states away had a pregnant female cat walk onto her porch and decide she lives now. She had 3 kittens. Since my friend/roommate @winterpower98 was looking for her first cat, we (other roommate/bestie, Winter/Gaia, and I) decided to take a trip down to visit and see if one of the kittens would work for her.
Tumblr media
The thing is, she did fall in love with one! He's black with white markings, so the 6 year old had been calling him Eclipse. He's, curious, playful, and always trying to get into something. He loves Gaia. I mean LOVES her. And she loves him. Like... emptying her savings loves him.
Tumblr media
Right before we arrived, our friend noticed a little lump on his belly. They thought nothing of it. And then, it got bigger. And bigger. And bigger.
Tumblr media
After a week, we took him to a local vet to get checked out. He had a umbilical hernia. Luckily it stopped before his diaphragm, but the hernia was severe enough that he would need surgery to close it (a lot of articles talked about smaller ones closing on their own which is why we waited). He would also need special care for IBS symptoms and to keep his hernia from getting injured or obstructed before repair (which couldn't happen until he was big enough to go under anesthesia). He would need to come indoors for his safety and be separated from the others as his sisters pouncing on the hernia was causing issues (a week earlier than the 8 week mark).
Tumblr media
I was honestly expecting Gaia to say it was too much for her to handle. Even told her that nobody would judge her for not being ready for that level of responsibility. That we could find an organization that could take him and get him the help he needed and find him a good home. He has two sisters she could consider, there were plenty of shelters back home with cats under a year old, and we could even check the town we were visiting and places on the way back home, so there were options. I knew how much it took to care for a kitten with health issues (my current cat required months of specialized care and there were plenty of scares along the way) and Gaia has no previous experience with cats outside of hanging out with our cats, so that's just starting on hard mode.
Tumblr media
After a long serious talk on the responsibilities she was about to take on, she said she knew it would be hard but the thought of giving him up made her sick. That she would do whatever it took to give him a happy life for however long she has him. We aren't rich people, she's going back to college full time, she had only decided on him over one of his sisters that morning, and (again) this would be the first cat she has ever had. She went all in without a second thought.
Tumblr media
The original quotes from various vets willing to do the surgery (not all vets can) were pretty insane, but luckily I found a non-profit that did the surgery for about half. My other roommate and I fully support her and chipping in what we can.
Tumblr media
Eclipse is 8 week old and his surgery is scheduled in a month, but we are going to call in and check for cancelations since he's reached the minimum weight and age for anesthesia. Winter has been so busy caring for him that she's not had a chance to post about him, so I decided to do it on the drive home. I think the story is important because it raises awareness about an issue most don't know about and shows someone genuinely caring about a pet with special needs. As a disabled person who's went through a lot of ableism and survived abuse, it really hit me to see how much she loves him with her whole chest and doesn't ever approach his issues with anger or blame.
I don't ask for reblogs much, but I wanted to ask you guys to boost this. I linked Gaia's PayPal below if anyone wants to help take some of the financial burden off her, but you can also support her with messages and boosting this and her future post/s about Eclipse (cut her some slack guys, she's currently in tired new mom mode). I don't expect anyone to donate because I know you guys are mostly in the same shape as us, but I think showing Gaia support is just as important.
Now if you'll excuse me, the hyperactive boy got the zoomies and just jumped in the toilet XD
Edit: Late thing to add on, but a few days after posting this my other roommate/bestie Sarah decided to adopt his sister! Her name is Melanite, but her honey eyes have earned her the nickname Miel. Her and Eclipse have always been very close (often laying on top of each other), so it's great that they'll get to stay together.

I had my gastroscopy today. It was very unpleasant. The doctor discovered that I have a hiatal hernia, which means that my stomach is partially stuck in my chest. Atleast it can be surgically repaired and now I know what's been causing my symptoms.

Man I am so sorry people were being dicks about you taking goop in when she was pregnant. Thank you so much for sharing the little gooplets with us, and good job surviving those fuckers who can't read.
THANK YOU, LOL. honestly people have gotten better since then, and that post is very dear to me -- goop & pumpkin gave us a gaggle of great cats, including two of mine, and now i get to make sure they're comfortable.
i hope goop lives a few more years! she's very wobbly but she's eating and drinking just fine <3

if anyone who struggles to eat because of digestive issues has words of advice on how to eat more (*for the purpose of having energy + gaining weight), i'd love to hear them.
i have weird yet mild (undiagnosed?) stomach issues, probably due to the small hiatal hernia my GI found. 90% of what i eat triggers the symptoms- my best guess is that physically filling food is the common factor. other than that, my symptoms are basically just acid reflux and the effects of having it chronically for ~9 months 24/7.
im on medication, which lessens most of it, and lemon honey tea has helps. surprisingly, i can eat cherry tomatoes by the handful and the last time i had a banana it was awful and triggering. so if your advice can be found on the first page of a 'foods for acid reflux' google search, uh, no thanks lol.
i also have adhd and an inconsistent taste palate, so im hesitant to start any structured diet or to plan meals days in advance. (but its not completely off the table)

I'm in a bit of a pickle.
The friend I'm visiting had a cat that walked into her yard and adopted her a couple months ago. She had kittens soon after. The solid black kitten is going to a friend back in Virginia, but... then we have her brother
Tumblr media
His name is Eclipse, my roommate/best friend and I adore him, and he has a birth defect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can see it's a pretty bad umbilical hernia. He seems to be otherwise healthy, the area is soft, he has no fever, and his appetite is good, but the hernia is big enough that it PROBABLY won't close on its own without surgery.
My best friend and I didn't come down planning on taking a kitten for ourselves. There's a thousand reasons not to. I mean, we both have a cat of our own, our current apartment will only allow two animals (meaning he would have to stay with her mom a few months), our lease goes for a few more months before we can move, and we are on a tight budget, but the little guy has taken up with us and he has such a big personality that we don't want to leave him behind.
The other factor is that this area has a surplus of kittens and not a lot of programs. We came down to visit, but also to pick up the little girl to take her to a good home. We didn't know about his health issue or just how charming he was. Nobody here wanted a kitten with a lump and a big surgical bill from the word go, so his only prospects are currently us, our friend keeping him outdoors (in a neighborhood with a feral cat colony), and... that's it.
We're worried how our cats will react (they are best friends), what his needs will be (we're looking for someone to check him before we transport him back to VA but we have no experience with hernia repair), and if we can convince my roommate's mom to keep him until we move in a few months.
It's 2 am and I'm wide awake thinking of everything that could go wrong, but I want to at least TRY to give him a good life. So I guess I'm just screaming into the void to get all my thoughts out, but also hoping somebody out there knows what to expect and is willing to give me some pointers. I'm scared of what the vet will say. I'm scared of complications and everything that could go wrong. I'm disabled and made of anxiety and cognitive distortions. Am I even up for whatever is coming my way?
I hope so.
I really hope so.

In India, 8.6% to 19% of people report weekly symptoms of GERD. Age, lifestyle habits, and other health conditions can influence GERD symptoms. Possibly due to differences in diet and lifestyle, urban populations may have higher rates than rural ones. Gastroesophageal reflux disease stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease, which is a digestive problem in which stomach acid and bile irritate the esophagus. This irritation can cause symptoms like heartburn, acidic fluids backing up into the throat, and sometimes chest pain. If left untreated, gastroesophageal reflux disease can lead to more serious problems like inflammation of the esophagus, ulcers, and even, in rare cases, esophageal cancer. Therefore, it is important to understand what GERD is and to treat it in time.

It's been a waiting game, but I'm finally seeing the surgeon tomorrow! I hope he accepts me as his patient and agrees to do the op, since my hernia causes me pain daily. I'm not scared, just a bit anxious.

Help Prevent Two Disabled Trans Women From Losing Their Car
We're still relying on donations to keep us afloat right now. They've nearly stopped completely despite people still reblogging our post, and it's all we have at the moment to keep our only source of transportation for the household. My girlfriend and I are stuck here until I can heal up and find a job or we can find a way of saving up for an RV to get the hell out dodge before then and leave this all behind us. I'll hopefully be seeing a nerve specialist sooner rather than later to have some of the nerves ablated in my abdomen to deal with my constant pain since having hernia surgery and my left testicle removed. With everything going on in the household, the money that's been donated to us has been having to go our car note in full every month, as my parents can't afford to pay for anything more than they already are as they tend to waste money going out shopping and buying shit they don't need on a consistent basis while the problems keep piling up. We're still living in a run down shed with our cat, a former stray, with no insulation, poorly installed electricity and no running water along with the water in the house not being on right now. In the coming months, we're expecting for there to be more rain fall and for it to get hotter as summer approaches. Recently it rained all day long and we were barely able to keep the shed from flooding, and despite our efforts, things still ended up getting ruined from the rainwater that flooded in. We're in a desperate situation right now and anything that you can donate genuinely helps us in the long run to getting out of here sometime hopefully soon. I appreciate all those who have been able to help us out so far and I'm sorry that we're having to continue to e-beg like this but we're not sure what else there is that we can do right now. We can't afford to lose our only source of transportation in a situation like this, even just $1 helps. Thank you for taking the time to read, even if you can't donate, sharing helps us as well.
