How to create a unit study for your homeschool.
Of all the subjects, I think I love teaching history the most. And I think it’s because I take the liberty to create our history studies instead of relying on a textbook to spit facts at us. I have no problem with facts, but I do have a problem with not totally being immersed in a time period where we can fully understand it. I’ve naturally gravitated toward a system that helps us do this, and…

Learning about all 50 states in the United States of America can be fun! . . . #unitstudy #50States #unitedstatesofamerica #Randondomnestfamily #education #homeschoool101 #homeschool #history #geography
By the third grade, kids should have an idea of what the thirteen colonies are. And by fourth grade, state standards just want them to learn about the state that they live in. Those are the basic common core standards, but for homeschool, we go further! In this article, you will learn How To Teach The 50 States in America using the 50 States Unit Study: Let’s Study The States! The 50…

Today is a holiday, so I did not have ballet tonight. Instead, I decided to take a break and rest my body by gaming on a day I would not normally game. Because it's a holiday, I think it's okay. No one has school today, but seeing as I'm homeschooled, I usually don't take holidays except the usual breaks in the fall (Thanksgiving), winter (Christmas), and spring (Spring Break). It keeps me on track.
I cannot believe that it is already September. My family is doing the September studies course the person who writes my curriculum offers like we have the past few years. It gives us something to discuss as a family and focus on near the start of the school year. Even my brother joins us through video call, which is nice.
Have a great week everyone! I will try to be more active with posting than I was the last two weeks. My goal is two times a week, but I do enjoy posting daily too, if I am able to.
Tasks Completed:
Algebra 2 - Completed worksheet on applications of linear inequalities in two variables
American Literature - Copied vocabulary terms + read about transcendentalism + read about Nathaniel Hawthorne + read an article about "Young Goodman Brown" discussing the literary conventions and contexts + read "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne + wrote a response to literature and emailed it to mom for grading (30/30) + worked on outline of reflective essay
Spanish 3 - Reviewed grammar page on adjectives and compound nouns + completed exercise + reviewed vocabulary
Bible 2 - Read 1 Kings 1:1-37
Early American History - Read an excerpt about where the Plymouth Colony settled and why + finished reading Plymouth Plantation Book 2 Chapter 1
Earth Science with Lab - Read about ocean trenches + read about the origin of trenches + completed short answer question explaining ocean trenches formation using Hydroplate Theory
Music Appreciation - Read about Gustav Mahler + listened to music excerpts on the pages + copied major necessary terms from the K section of the music dictionary
Khan Academy - Completed US History Unit 1 Test
Duolingo - Studied for approximately 30 minutes (Spanish + French + Chinese) + completed daily quests
Piano - Practiced for three hours in one hour split sessions
Reading - Read pages 126-160 of Missing Clarissa by Ripley Jones
Chores -  Cleaned my bathroom + cleaned windows in my bedroom and in the study + took trash and recycling out
Activities of the Day:
September Study (John 14:1-2)
Personal Bible Study (Ephesians 4)
Gaming

okok because @constable-rohza asked . some stuff about my mq au (that goes with this fic !)
little note about making the au: because i know nothing about the california school system or just how school works in the united states in general i spent a while just very vaguely asking people i know in the us about how shit works there (i will never understand why elementary is 5 years and then middle is 3 and then high is 4 ??? here we have elementary for 6 and then junior high for 3 and then senior high for 3 . it makes so much more sense to me . anyways) like . why the fuck do freshman/sophomore/junior/senior exist . its just so insane . but i could talk about how much i hate america for days on end this is supposed about my au .
i write like most of the fic that goes with this au in class on folded sheets of a4 paper so heres some additional paraphrased notes that i found on those as well as some little fun facts ive been turning around in my head:
there this weird little timeline thing i spent like 30 minutes losing my mind over (i was incredibly tired and had nothing in my system but an adhd pill and a glass of milk and nothing was making sense to me) anyhow in that flashback at the start of the fic, as mentioned in the a/n at the end of the chapter, brad is 27 and david is 30 and they're sort-of-friends (brad doesn't want to call them friends but they are). jo at this time is 6 years old and david's ex-girlfriend kinda just stuck the kid with her . i had a bunch of backstory behind that but then i realized that i was probably never going to get into that so i just scrapped it . but it was the whole "you knocked me up before we broke up now i'm forcing you to take care of this kid because i don't give a shit anymore" thing and david is a pushover so he just took it . about 9 years later and like a month into the new school year, brad gets arrested . jo is 15 at this time, has to start school . he gets out on parole around two months before the school year ends .
jo's homeschooling wasn't really homeschooling, brad would just give her schoolwork with instructions and some teenager would sit there and babysit every day until brad got home early (made an arrangement to never have any classes to teach during the last period/block of the day) to cover anything she didn't understand . once she got old enough for brad and david to trust her at home alone (like 11-12ish) they stopped hiring a babysitter . she was about a year or two ahead in her studies when she starts at the high school brad and david work at so she breezes through most of her assignments and tests
before brad was a teacher he had some job in finance . what specifically ? nobody knows ! he never talks about his old job and just vaguely alludes to it because it creeps people out . all anyone knows about it is that he made a buttload of money from it . he decided to be a teacher for fun because he has a soft spot for kids and knows a ton of stuff
i wanted to stick fairly close with canon so no spoilers but the way brad got arrested was by covering for something jo did
when david was a kid he actually didn't have much interest in being a teacher, he wanted to be a firefighter and teaching was his plan b (one of his parents was a teacher) . he talks a weird amount about firefighters in the show and i wanted to incorporate it somehow :P also he forces his class to read brene brown
ok that's all for now because i still have to finish writing the fic and i may add some of the little details in my head into later chapters and i don't want to spoil too much !!!

Right, so I seem to have found myself in a Situation... as I sometimes do. I'm about to become the family librarian. And I'm not entirely sure how to do that. Or where to start.
For context, the husband and I spent several years living abroad, and just returned home in September. I started unpacking our storage unit yesterday.
Um.
We had over 2 dozen milk crates of books packed that had been intended for library donation 7 years ago, but never got sent off. And now they're still here, and I'm unpacking them. Hundreds of books.
And we came home after 7 years abroad, with our suitcases packed largely full... of books.
And my Mum-in-Law has cheerfully returned... all of the books we'd wanted to keep that we left in her safekeeping for when we returned.
If that wasn't enough, my husband's grandmother passed recently, and Mum, as executive of the estate, has asked me to take... a lot of Grandma's books.
Science. Philosophy. How-to manuals. Textbooks. Classics. Religious texts. References. Children's books. The list goes on and on and on.
------------------------------------------------
Here's where it gets interesting.
We live in a very heavily religious, conservative community. What few public libraries that are functional around us are either censored by local governments, defunded, being forced to ditch their physical books and "go digital" due to budgets, or just freaking outright closing. Even the one bookstore within an hour's drive is being forced to sell more toys and movies than books, just to stay open.
It has been suggested that since I technically spent a summer helping my hometown's library build a card catalog back in the 90s, and we live in a house that's way too big for us, that it would be super-cool if I turned this collection of approximately a zillion books into a library that the children and adults of the family (and our friends) could have access to. Just kinda be the caretakers of the collection.
I am 1,000,000% down for this. We have kids in the family not learning jack in their public schools, and both my husband and I were teachers when we were abroad, so we want to help. We have cousins who homeschool and are always desperate for study material. Absolutely. I'm in.
Librarians of Tumblr.... NOW WHAT???????
Where do I start once I have set the boards onto the milk crates to make shelves? How do I sort these? I'm not loaning them, folks will have to come here to read, and I'm willing to set up a coffeemaker and cups for them. But... I'm kinda starting to panic here.
Halp.

Wow! Someone I have known and adored for half my life published a really cool book based on his experiences living in the oldest remaining intentional community in the United States, where he teaches and mentors kids in film studies.
Tumblr media
We're Gonna Need A Bigger Book: Teens, Homeschooling, Cinema, And Intentional Living
We're Gonna Need A Bigger Book is a guide for any teacher, cinephile, or parent who wants to create a film education course for young people. The book is also an account of the author's twelve years of homeschooling teenagers in cinema appreciation at Twin Oaks, an intentional living community in central Virginia. While each of the ten chapters covers a different period, theme, genre or movement in film, and how to teach it, the introductions that open each chapter provide a narrative of the author's years teaching cinema, and the relationships built with the students over those years. The result is a book that is as much inspiration as instruction for any teacher, parent, or film lover.

Backstory/Timeline
Tumblr media
Chu Grace was born to a Korean father and a British mother in Manchester, United Kingdom. Her father was part of a technological company and travelled the world as a salesman, meeting Grace’s mother in London where they both married and moved to Manchester as part of his job.
Chu Grace was born on 14th May 1990
Aged 2, she began ballet lessons at her mother’s instruction
Homeschooled from the age of five to combine Korean/British curriculum together
Began ballroom dancing around the age of 6, just before moving to Germany
With her parents, Grace moved to Berlin at the age of 7 (1997)
Began to learn the basics of German along with her normal studies and continued her ballroom dancing lessons with ballet dancing
At the age of 10 (2000), the family moved to Suwon-Si to be closer to her grandparents as well as part of her father’s job and that’s where they settled for a year. After a year, they moved to Seoul and remained there ever since.
She was homeschooled until the age of 13 when she joined the middle school at Dulwich College Seoul and completed high school there.
She finished her education at the age of 18 in 2008 and joined Big Hit at the age of 19, a year later.
While she originally auditioned at Big Hit for her dancing and her singing, she was hired as more of an assistant which was her first paying job, her background vocals then later used. Her English skills came in useful for other idols and other staff
In 2010, RM was signed to Big Hit and BTS or BPB as it was known, was started. Bang Si-Hyuk asked Grace to mentor Namjoon, especially in English even though he was already proficient at it. These two would be the first members of BTS, though Grace was added to the line-up after Jungkook.
Yoongi joined just before J-Hope in December 2010 and therefore the rap line was complete.
Grace, during this time, began learning rapping to further the background vocals that might be needed.
Seokjin and then Jungkook were added to the lineup and finally, Grace was introduced as a member - solely for background vocals, sub-rapping, her dancing and then finally, visuals. The contract for her was signed separately as Big Hit were worried a hip-hop group with a female member wouldn’t work and so they signed her for only two albums.
Taehyung then Jimin were added to the line-up and the eight members of BTS were complete.
June 13th 2013 - BTS officially debut with their first performance of No More Dream.

PROLOGUE “HOW DID IT START?”
Malibu
summer 2005
ONE MOMENT COULD CHANGE A PERSON'S WHOLE LIFE WHEN THEY LEAST EXPECTED IT. This is how Ivelle Stark would describe the evening when a group of military men came to the bar where she worked. She honestly wasn't thrilled about it, as she knew exactly how many of them acted after having a few drinks. She had to deal with them too often — all thanks to her older brother Tony, who ran a company that created an arsenal for the United States Army.
But she knew she could never date one of them — she couldn't fall in love with someone she could lose in a second and then suffer twice as much, especially since she was quite an emotional person. She felt like she couldn't survive something like that.
Someone might say that after what she had experienced during her two-year training at the academy, where future agents of the organization founded by her father Howard were trained, she should have been tough and unfeeling. But she couldn't do it — emotions were something she didn't want to get rid of because it felt like she was becoming a robot. She tried to do it once, but she couldn't, so she gave up. She concluded that it was not worth forcing a change if someone couldn't do it, as was the case with her. This was the reason why she abandoned her training a year ago and returned home.
Thanks to Tony, or rather the tutors he provided, she began preparing for the exams, which she managed to pass, and because of this, she got into law school in New York, which she had dreamed of before starting her agent training. She had always been homeschooled, so that made it a lot easier for her, although she dreamed of studying in a regular school. She promised herself that if she ever had children, they would have a life she couldn't experience — at least as normal as being in the Stark family allows.
"Damn it," the girl muttered, seeing the group at one of the tables, or rather several, because they had managed to push them together. She didn't like the fact that of all the bars in Malibu, they had to choose the one where she worked. "Why can't one evening be complete without drunken recruits? What did we do to deserve this?"
"What happened?" Layla, a girl she met while working there, asked her. They found a common language very quickly, which meant that at times they communicated with each other almost without words. They hadn't worked together for long, but they became very close. "I thought this sight was normal for you, considering your brother's job."
The girl shook her head. She just wasn't in the mood to serve them. If they came, she knew only too well what that meant for them — they were about to fly to the front. They either didn't come back alive, or if they did... they weren't themselves, although that was putting it mildly.
Ivelle was just like that — sometimes she was too empathetic, which caused various situations, even not entirely positive ones.
"Hello, Ellie," Rhodes, her older brother's best friend, walked up to the bar where young Stark was standing.
Ivelle knew perfectly well that she was not a Stark in flesh and blood but had been adopted when she was three, but she had no problem with it at all. She always said that family is not only about blood ties. She and Tony were the perfect example of this — even if her brother's personality was different, she knew he would do anything for her, just as she did for him. Their relationship was definitely more important to her than whether they were related by blood.
She was happy that she had the opportunity to experience love that many children could only dream of. She paid absolutely no attention to how her peers laughed at her and said very unpleasant things about her. She had one low moment early on, where she asked Tony if he regretted having to take care of her after Howard and Maria died. What he replied to her then became deeply embedded in the girl's memory.
"You may be my adoptive sister, but it doesn't change the fact that thanks to you, I feel a semblance of normality. Just because I work a lot doesn't mean I avoid you or anything. I just want you to have a better life than what I had at your age."
He tried for her, and she... she couldn't even tell him what she had been doing in the last years she had been studying at the academy. She couldn't do it for his safety. He was her only loved one, and she wouldn't forgive herself if she had to lose him because of her recklessness.
"Hey, Rhodey," she said with a smile, hugging the dark-skinned man, which he returned with the same joy. "What are you doing with the Marines? After all, you serve as an Air Force pilot."
"A friend asked me to keep an eye on them," he replied, nodding at the group of young men. He sighed heavily. "Some of them leave in a few days, others in a dozen or so weeks... You understand."
Just as she thought... she wasn't wrong even in the slightest. There was no way, considering she knew how it all worked. She really felt sorry for them, but at the same time, she knew that it was their conscious decision and they knew what they were signing up for when they joined the army.
"I didn't know you were still babysitting," she laughed, drying the dishes. "I thought after taking care of little me, you'd had enough of it."
Rhodes burst out laughing. He laughed about it now, but Ivelle knew it had taken some of his nerves to keep an eye on her. In fact, even a lot. After all, she was everywhere.
"You were a good child, after all," he replied, smiling. "It was quite a pleasure to be able to do that."
"Yeah... when I hid in the tree house and you couldn't find me, you probably weren't laughing," replied the girl, fixing her hair, which was tied up in a ponytail. "I thought you would curse me forever with your rage."
The man laughed again.
"Ivelle and her childhood sins?" Layla appeared curious next to them. Miss Stark wasn't too happy that her best friend would learn some story from her childhood. "Why don't I know anything about this, huh?"
The girl just shook her head in amusement, and Rhodes returned to the original topic of their conversation.
"After all, this group..." he pointed to his charges to the girls. They were having quite a good time, and they hadn't had a chance to drink anything alcoholic yet. "They're on a completely different level, or at least some of them are."
The girl apologized to her friend and then approached the table. Three of her peers, at least those of similar age to her, took notice of her without hesitation. The fourth of them... was quite withdrawn for the girl's taste. It didn't fit the description of the soldiers she had already met, but at the same time, she felt intrigued by him.
"What is such a pretty girl doing in such a dive?" he asked her as his companions started checking out other girls and she managed to take their orders. "You don't seem like an ordinary waitress to me."
"I'm trying to earn money for college because I hate asking my brother for anything. He's already done too much for me in the last year, although I'm grateful for that," she said, making him laugh. "You also don't fit the image of an ordinary soldier I knew so far..."
He was definitely different from the others, which made her want to get to know him better, but she was afraid that their relationship would not end well. She could get attached to some people way too easily, and she knew it.
The boy smiled and then shook her hand.
"I'm Marc Spector," he introduced himself.
The girl shook his hand. There was something about him, and she could see it perfectly. He was a walking mystery to her.
"And I'm Ivelle Stark," she said. "Nice to meet you."
"Nice name," her interlocutor replied. "Quite unusual... Still, I think you deserve a much better job than dealing with drunk people."
The girl smiled at him, and Marc himself felt really good around her, which was surprising to him. After everything he had been through in his life, he never thought he would meet someone like the girl in front of him again. They may have only known each other for a few minutes, but he felt somewhere deep down that he could trust her and even let her get closer to him, if something more was to come from this relationship. He didn't really know if he wanted that. However, he knew perfectly well that fate could play some really good tricks.
The girl returned to the bar to prepare the orders for the young Marines, but her attitude was completely different than a few moments ago. Layla had already noticed this.
"What changed you so suddenly?" she asked, smiling. "Just a moment ago you weren't exactly thrilled about having to go to them."
The girl waved her hand at this question. She knew that El-Faouly had already added something, but she knew what it was like. She realized that her friend would love to find her a boyfriend against her will, but she didn't need anyone to be happy. At least that's what she thought at that moment…
THE CONTINUATION OF THAT EVENING WAS NOT VERY POSITIVE, AT LEAST NOT ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. Even Rhodes' intervention did not help much, because the new addition to the army caused quite a stir, which was nothing new in this place. Young Stark wanted to throw them all out of there, but she knew she couldn't handle them on her own — after all, there were several of them, and they were definitely stronger. Even if Layla wanted to help her, she knew it wouldn't do much good.
"Of course," one of the drunk boys muttered towards them, pushing Ivelle. "We fight for people like them, and two ordinary waitresses will pay attention to us?"
"You destroyed half the bar!" Layla exclaimed. "What the hell did you expect, you idiot? We're not here to pat your heads!"
The same boy swung at Ivelle again, but at the last moment someone caught him and punched him in the face.
"You must not raise your hand against the defenseless!" Marc called to him. "We are here to protect them, not harm them!"
Young Stark was shocked after he stood up for her. She didn't expect that he was able to do this for a complete stranger. He was completely different from his colleagues — she knew that one hundred percent now.
He impressed her very much — she could tell by the way her heart was beating like crazy just by looking at Spector.
Did this mean that she had just fallen in love against her principles? Possibly... but she wasn't one hundred percent sure about it.

Glitch Tech Verse
Tumblr media
[ P.S: Please do not reblog or steal! This is for personal use. ]
"Nope. Not worth the trauma or the XP." ~ Noburu's catchphrase
STORY
Noburu Makoto works at Hinobi's technology store in the Osaka branch. She secretly works as a Glitch Tech, and her gamer tag is 'onyXVenom'. Gaming became a way for her to escape from 'family tension'. After her parents' divorce, she dropped out of high school and took on part-time jobs to help her mother cover their monthly expenses. On her days off, she continued gaming, as it had become a therapeutic hobby for her.
After winning the tournament and being hired by the Hinobi, which led to a better-paying job, with Kanako and her mother's encouragement, she resumed her studies to earn her high school diploma through homeschooling. Her goal was to eventually go to college and secure a brighter future for herself and her mother.
The Birth of Team RQ (Red Queen)
Noburu first met Kanako in a bookstore, and they ended up fighting over the latest manga release of Blood+, where both women were swiftly expelled and blacklisted (and remain so to this day). At Glitch Tech Center, the two were shocked and dumbfounded to find themselves together again. And they had been assigned to work together because no other Tech could handle them, as one was 'hot-tempered', while the other was, well, 'Noburu'.
For several months, they had tense and difficult interactions with one another. After enduring several disasters and near-catastrophic events, they were able to bond and rely on each other, growing closer and stronger as a team. This led to their friendship blossoming as well. They even entered several gaming tournaments, and as a tribute to their first meeting, they named their team 'RQ a.k.a Red Queen'.
EXTRA INFO
Previously, her surname was 'Yuze', but following her parent's divorce, she decided to sever ties with that 'man' (her father) and changed her surname to her mother's maiden name, 'Makoto'.
Her mother soon left the city to enjoy country life when her company allowed her to work remotely and online.
Currently, Noboru is staying with Kanako in an employee accommodation provided by Hinobi.
Noburu's father has now moved to the United States. He remarried but later got divorced for the second time. As a result, Noburu gained a stepsister named 'Chidori Yuze', who currently lives in Bailey, United States. Since their mothers had both been victims of the same 'man', they suggested that the siblings meet each other.
Noburu is a skilled cook. She often prepares meals and bento boxes for her mother, who frequently arrives home late from work.
Noboru is a jack of all trades, having worked various part-time jobs. With her diverse work experience, she has developed a wide range of skills, making her a capable and versatile individual who can handle almost any task.

1. Are you named after anyone? Not on purpose, lol. I happen to share a name with an ancestor and my parents didn't realize it until I was like 2 days old and my grandma told them.
2. When was the last time you cried? Probably around a week ago.
3. Do you have kids? No but I'd like to adopt someday
4. What sports do you play/ have you played? I did gymnastics when I was 5 and archery when I was 13-14
5. Do you use sarcasm? Frequently
6. What is the first thing you notice about people? Usually hair or clothes. I have trouble with faces so I kind of latch onto other characteristics to tell people apart when I'm new to a group.
7. What's your eye color? Blue
8. Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings, it bothers me when there isn't one
9. Any talents? I get a lot of compliments for writing, knitting, and being naturally good with animals, so I guess those count
10. Where were you born? Midwest United States
11. What are your hobbies? Video games, visual novels, writing, fishkeeping, knitting, comics, biking, editing videos, and reading
12. Do you have any pets? Two, technically five. I have a calico cat named Marie and a veiltail betta fish named Aurora ("Rory"). I also do roughly 80% of the work for my brother's goldfish: Cornelius, Hermione ("Hermey"), and Clarice. In theory I'm supposed to take the goldfish when my brother goes to college, but in practice I'll probably end up getting custody of them when I move out.
13. How tall are you? 5'10"
14. Favorite subject in school? free reading time I liked music, literature, and art. When I was homeschooled we did a cultural studies unit that I also really enjoyed.
15. Dream job? Author, someday. Right now I'm content with my silly little fanfics, but I have original stuff that I'd like to publish later on. I wanted to be a veterinarian for years but realistically I don't think it would be a good fit for me. I'm looking into vet tech certification instead but right now I'm working a little outside of the field to make sure its what I really want before committing to the program.

It's another day of a quick dinner while updating my studyblr before I get ready for ballet and head out for dance. I feel like there is a lot going on this week. A look at my upcoming week: robotics course tomorrow, impromptu Girl Scouts meeting on Thursday for World Thinking Day (it's a homeschool troop, so we can meet during regular school hours for special meetings), I have a history project due on Saturday along with another cookie booth, plus I'm really amping up with my piano studies now to prepare for my practical and theory exams in May. What I’m Grateful for Today:
I am grateful for an easy day of study despite a lot of copying work.
Quote of the Day:
Dreams are lovely but they are just dreams. Fleeting, ephemeral, pretty. But dreams do not come true just because you dream them. It’s hard work that makes things happen. It’s hard work that creates change.
