I guess I'm not really clear on what the deal is with Treviso's defenses or lack thereof. So it's a "defenseless merchant city" with no standing army, like the rest of Antiva, because... the reputation of the Crows is enough? Maybe I missed codex entries or, god forbid, a tie-in novel, explaining how this collective of extremely wealthy city-states that grew to power because of their naval might and location as a trade hub didn't at any point establish an army. Shouldn't each city have their own army?? Especially because there was a civil war at the beginning of the Dragon Age??? And dragons have been ravaging the north for fifty years and there was a Blight 20 years ago and the Qunari have been threatening invasion for decades????????

Hmmm just gonna spit this headcanon out in text post form since A. I don't think I could exposit it well enough in image form and B. It's not actually textually/thematically substantiated and I don't like actually staking my stuff on just vibes alone*

But anyway. I'd say it's pretty evident that all the islanders forgot their names, right? King obviously. Because why the hell else would he do that, but also Siffrin No Middle Names No Last Name.

They're 'pretty sure' they've 'always' been 'Just Siffrin' 'as long as they can remember'. It's a pretty cruel twist of the knife to say that they don't even get to keep their birth name as a memento, which is why I'm saying as such.

My utterly unsubstantiated claim is I think it'd be cute to say that Sisyphus *is* the name Siffrin initially picked, assuming the myth of King Sisyphus is recontextualised as idk, just a play or something in the setting. But I like the idea of Siffrin going 'oh shit 🫵 he's just like me fr' at a tortured fictional character long before the irony kicks in.

As for how Sisyphus -> Siffrin. I think that chronic mumbler and emotional doormat Sif just did not correct people who misheard the name during their time travelling, and went through enough places with incompatible phonologies (pronounceable sounds in the language) without ever really writing it down that it just got kinda. Changed until it was unrecognisable, and Siffrin just went with it until the earlier pronunciations slipped out of their swiss-cheese brain. And they just kinda don't remember any of that.

Also, something something the horrid realisation that Siffrin also named themselves after a King. Just not as blatantly.

*(though I think there's something here about Siffrin, a guy from a belief system that seems to thoroughly disincentivise autonomy and self-motivated choice continuously having their hand forced to make changes/choices they don't want but have no choice but to... It's not solid enough to really back this up tbh, but it informs it.)

I don't have the time at the moment to write a full essay but someone should definitely remind me to write a post later on the phenomenon that is Ratio's assholery being sanded away by well-meaning fans.

In a quest to fight against the "Ratio is a condescending jerk" stereotype from Ratio haters, pro-Ratio fans have now swung too far the other way, making him into a saint who loves everyone, isn't disdainful of failure, and believes every single person can equally pull themselves up out of mediocrity.

None of those things are actually true based on the game itself, where Ratio is, in fact, a judgmental person who struggles to accept the mundanity of those around him, believes in an educational elite, and can be exceptionally condescending, whether he means it or not.

He's a flawed character. His own flaws are absolutely central to his character, in fact. And yet none of his flaws preclude him from being meaningful, nuanced, and likeable.

It's okay that he's not actually that nice.

In defending a character from one extreme ("he's a bad person"), we don't have to jump all the way to the other side ("he's an angel").

He can be a little bit of a dick and still be a great character, promise.

Positive impacts Gi-hun has had in other people's lives which will still matter even if the games get back on track, Gi-hun dies, and the games end with the expected sole surviving player taking home the entire ₩ 45.6 billion once again in S3:

Cheol is being raised by a financially stable parental figure who loves him.

Sangwoo's mother gets to focus on being a good parent to Cheol instead of drowning alone in her confusion, grief, and lack of closure around Sangwoo's disappearance.

Cheol's mother still has a decent chance of being brought across the border and reunited with her son, who is being raised in a kind and stable home environment in the meantime.

Saebyeok's broker is making a genuine effort to be a kinder/better person to all of his clients.

Junho and Wooseok know about the games and still have access to whatever remains of Gihun's winnings from the first games. Either or both of them could easily decide to continue carrying on Gihun's mission of destroying the games, even if Gihun dies.

The recruiter is still dead. (Less obvious, perhaps, on the 'positive impact' front, but it seems likely that he was one of the better recruiters the games had, which means replacing him will probably require at least some stressful/annoying work on the part of the game runners. They'll have to hope they can find someone else as well suited to the conman's job. If they can't, it might also become more difficult to fill all 456 spots with willing victims every year in future games.)

Gihun can't undo the selfish choices he made in the past or the losses he's suffered in the games, but neither can the games unwrite every act of kindness he's committed since.

Sometimes things feel hopeless because we get too focused on too narrow a view of our personal impact on the world. A win is still a win, though - an act of selfless kindness that helped someone else still matters - even when the bigger battles are lost, our greatest goals are not realized, and despair feels so easy to lose ourselves in.

There may always be cruel and selfish people in the world, but there will always be kind and caring people, too. The games can strip away hope and compassion from the people they grind down and destroy, but they can't strip all the kindness, all the people who choose caring for each other over selfish greed, or all the acts of selfless compassion that change someone else's life for the better from every person in the world.

Gihun can't stop cruelty from existing in the world, but the games can't stop kindness from existing in the world, too.
