Unpopular Opinions on 2x6!

I was in and out of WJW yesterday, but was it said who (Max or DJenks) initiated the 2x6 rewrite? I know Max is to blame for the truncated episode count and episode length, but the makeover-pressure storyline of the original 2x6 maybe just was not working and they decided to correct?

We don't know exactly what "makeover" entailed, but Ed already found Stede attractive under any circumstance (the hanged and sickly look of 1x4, still trying to kiss him after seeing him in that ugly af wig for most of 1x5, that adventurer outfit in 1x7 that did no favor for his legs, etc.) and Stede was already confident enough to try for sex in 2x5. I'm not sure what would have been the point of a Stede makeover, whether it was to make him more "manly" or more "fancy" or more "pretty and gnc" or more whatever was going to be used. The thing that was holding Ed back was wanting to be careful and fear of being hurt again; a Stede makeover wouldn't have helped that, and the crew intervening would have done more harm than good. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Really, the only thing Ed/Stede-wise I'm missing in 2x6 is some degree of sexual tension and a slow dance, dammit. Oh, and really more segue scene in going from on deck, to below deck, to on deck with Ned Low. That was weird.

But, here's the thing: Stede is underdeveloped in S2 compared to Ed. I wrote this thing between the releases of 2x7 and 2x8, and this is the biggest failure that Max gave OFMD in this time truncation. (And the biggest failure from DJenks + company in response is spending so much of the premium screen time on Izzy instead of killing him off early, but I digress...)

This is what I ended that post on, and I stand by it:

I think it should be noted that as of the end of 2x7, Stede is the only crew member who hasn't had mental reflection and/or therapy in Season 2. He realized Mary, Alma, and Louis didn't need him and he was in love with Ed in 1x10, but the voice calling him a child with a toy, an idiot, weak, and ugly is still there.

This is why we need an S3!!!

So, on the lost makeover scene, Stede is the only character that has explicitly had body image issues (from what I remember...), so I really could do without a makeover scene, especially with Stede getting dumped the next episode just a few hours after sleeping with Ed the first time. If Ed had given given him cute reassurances that no makeover was necessary, the dumping would have been even worse! If the crew had pressured the sex in any way, that dumping would have been EXTRA even worse!

I think the makeover/cupid stuff was best left out of canon. I'm sure it would work in a fanfic, but in the placement of the canon story, I don't think it belonged. We REALLY needed more time between "take it slow" and The Banginging (just like we needed more time in the cocaptains era), but 8 episodes, I enjoy the beat breakdowns they chose in the time they were allotted,

Getting more into unpopular opinion territory: I don't care in the slightest that polycule scenes were cut since that storyline is so incredibly uninteresting to me; I don't mind it, but I just don't miss it when it's not around. We don't know who made the call on cutting the polycule scene(s), but IMO, gay Die Hard with Lupete was way better than anything the polycule could have done. And moving the Lupete wedding to the end made the season end on a higher and more hopeful note.

Hii i was going through ur blog and saw u had plans for a gnc insectlike monster👀 Would you mind sharing some concept ideas/ fun facts that u had for them?

Sure!

When I originally came up with the concept for TCM, I wanted to do six ROs. Mori and Amir were my first choices, then Akello won a popularity poll on the TCM discord that gave him the third slot out of the remaining character concepts.

The latter three routes I intended to make were Fira, my huge mean dragon/gargoyle woman, Ren, my gnc insectoid, and either Kazu or Raath, tbd via poll. (Raath was intended to be like a.... twisted MC corruption style route). Unfortunately, as you know, it takes a long time to make concept chapters and I wanted to get moving on the "real game" while interest was still fresh so earlier this year I decided to focus on developing the game through mori/amir/akello and see where to go once that's sort of situated.

SO Ren was intended to be a character that was about dichotomies and extremes, at least at an archetypal stage.

I wanted them to have cute, boyish looks but be relatively androgynous in shape to contrast the look and presentation of some of the other characters.

I played with the idea of making them transmasc (i still like the idea) but for now, I describe them as gnc as I'm not 100% settled on where I want their identity. I identify as gnc myself and see a lot of my own struggles in my trans friends and allies so I think there's a lot of common ground to explore along those themes regardless, which is exciting for me as a writer.

All of the TCM ROs are. Very confident. I wanted Ren to be more unsure, and maybe more hesitant to make bold decisions.

Ren's looks and demeanor might hint at someone who is easily pushed around but I wanted there to be a strong personality underneath when things get rocky.

They're a frycook/linecook but don't really SEEM to carry that Waffle House energy

They enjoy grandma style crafts (especially fiber arts and canning), going to local museums, and have a secret love of a lot of tech stuff. (They think homebrew handheld gaming systems are rad af)

They're 24 and cry looking at videos of red pandas (they're just so cute)

They deliberately sought out a demon deal

Their demon form is especially monstrous, in my head its modeled after like.... the xenomorph meats a mutant praying mantis.

They hate their demon form and struggle to come to terms with it a lot, something the MC was intended to play a big role in helping them overcome some of that.

I wanted to explore Ren as a human having a lower libido vs Ren as a demon having much higher sexual needs and the reconciliation in how we accept changing parts of ourselves. This is like a secondary theme in my brain right now, not sure it would be a main focus if Ren ends up with their own route but I think the idea's fascinating.

Their monster form has an ovipositor

No concept art of Ren exists right now but I'm hoping that one day, Ren will get to be a fully fleshed out character because I love their vibe and think they would bring a unique and special flavor to TCM lol!

As for wishes he will and won’t grant, he tends to refuse things that will take longer than a few weeks. Most wishes that would take that long to conjure would infringe on multiple people’s free will other than the person making the wish, and he doesn’t like to remove a human’s volition at all if he can avoid it. But also he doesn’t like to grant wishes that are extremely materialistic. Giving food to those in need reaching out to him? He is happy to grant that. Some guy wants a fancy shmancy expensive car? He’s like “<:) I don’t know about using my magic for that…”. He likes to grant wishes that help people. Immediate relief and to give them a better future. But it’s honestly not too hard to get him to cave and grant something he thinks is frivolous if it doesn’t hurt anyone.

Random hc: I love klavier sm I feel like ive seen every post abt him and don’t have any original thoughts that haven’t been said before but, I hc him as having OCD. This is mostly just based off of our interactions with him during Guitar's Serenade.

Also, I’m aware this is an unpopular opinion but I don’t think he had a crush on Apollo when he first met him! Like I do find that trope fun and silly, but looking at his character Klavier would never fall for someone at first sight, and definitely not someone he’s as suspicious about as Apollo [he accused his brother of Murder]. Klavier is SO So meticulous and need to have all the facts figured out beforehand. I truly believe he needs something to be loud and messy and BAD at to vent with because he tries SO hard to keep everything under wraps at all times. Get the man a buncha brightly colored paints he can go ham w!!! Let him blast music in his lonely studio apartment and head bang and belt songs and dance badly where no one can see!!! Let him learn to take up space authentically in his own damn house!!

General opinion overall: He is SO charismatic and blorbo-able! He seems carefree but is Not in any sense of the word. He makes you think he wears his heart on his sleeve but it is hidden under SO many layers, getting him to trust you is going to be SO much work. He puts EVERYTHING he’s got into his passions and by god he’s gotta make sure he’s got everything Just Right. He’s such a layered character and its hard to pick out his thoughts, also they created a character who is just SO interesting when you pair him with literally any character. Like he and apollo are such opposites how would they function together? What the hell was the Gavin brother’s relationship Actually like? I think abt this all the time. Also like, him and Wright actually became more similar characters due to his disbarment, but also That past affects his relationship with Ema too! Also how the hell did he cope (did he cope???) with the personal betrayals he suffered in AJ?? Also what’s his relationship with the other prosecutors in the office???? Does he have offscreen friends or did he really lose everyone? I am unable to be succinct over Klavier but it boils down to:

Not tagging this with any of the fandoms or characters involved because this is honestly just a me problem but. I kind of hate the prevalence of the taking of canonically queer men/masc presenting characters and either feminizing them or making them women (trans or otherwise). Like I said this is entirely a me problem but it feels the same to me as being misgendered does, even if its characters that I don’t particularly connect with?

Like for example in GO, I fully get and appreciate they’re genderless despite how they present but it fucks me up to see people making ‘ineffable wives’ stuff because it feels to me like people dismissing them choosing to present as masc (most often at least, I know Crowley has presented as femme) to say ‘I’d like you better if you were how I want you to be’ and, don’t get me wrong, I know that’s not what it really is but I can’t exactly help how I feel about it. I’m not going to go tell anybody they’re wrong or to stop doing it, just avoid it where I can.

Another example being transfem Ed. That one fucks me up for a lot of reasons, mostly being down to like. He really isn’t. Feminine? In the show? I know I know, how someone presents can be different from how they identify but, I’m fairly sure the headcanon came from how people perceive Ed presenting? The wearing of the robe and the shaving of the beard in particular. Also the. Wanting nice things? Folding socks? It just feels very. Yeah. Like none of that is inherently feminine.

I. Wonder if. Maybe. People see ‘this is a show that tackles toxic masculinity’ and think. Like. ‘The solution is to remove masculinity and replace it with femininity’? Like that’s what it feels like. I suppose it goes hand in hand with a lot of the fandom’s particularly shallow read on Ed? ‘Big uwu baby man, lets make him a woman cause he’s too soft to be a man’, kinda thing?

Don’t get me wrong I know for a lot of people it does just come from seeing themselves in Ed and wanting to express that, or people going ‘I just think its neat’, but I also am so positive there’s a non zero number with. I’ll call it ‘radfem motivations’.

And this purely comes from the ‘Ed is a woman’ thing, like. Gender-fuckery Ed is perfectly fine by me, let that man be GNC AF. But ‘Ed is a woman’, to me, feels a little 1. Misogynistic and 2. Honestly? Homophobic?

The ‘radfem motivations’ are why I’m also bothered a bit by ‘but what if they were all women?’ Again, I know a lot of it is people seeing themselves in the characters and wanting to connect with them better but god does it fuck me up to have this unique show with canonically queer men who are able to and encouraged to be who they are by the narrative, and see people saying ‘it’d be better if they were women’. Like queer men don’t deserve to have this story? This is not a 1:1 comparison but it feels the same to me as ‘show has canon gay male couple > homophobes complain about it a la “men can’t just be friends anymore?”‘

I’m honestly not sure whether to be surprised or not at how little pushback the idea of transmasc Izzy gets by the fandom at large with this idea of ‘but women better’ floating around but like. I also know that at least part of that is people wanting to demonize Izzy and not caring if transmascs get hurt in the crossfire. ‘He can stay a man cause men are evil but he can’t have a dick cause that’s gross so he can be a trans man because he’s evil’, kinda thing?

Anyway this is just a bunch of shitty rambly stream of consciousness shit so try not to take any offense from this (unless you’re one of the radfems, then be as offended as your vile little heart can manage and then fuck all the way off ❤ ✌). He didn't really like her saying all that stuff about Nicole. A NOTP I have with said character: Swan Lady Hater Swan Lady Hater Swan Lady Hater A random headcanon: I really like the idea that Vector has ADHD, and needs some tunes playing in the background at all times that he doesn't just zone out fully. He concentrates better when he's got beats playing! General Opinion over said character: GOD, I love Vector. I love how often he has to become the adult of the group, it's just fantastic every time he's offering emotional support, even if he's not really.. Good at it. It's one of the things that I feel has been consistent amongst all iterations - hell, he even made peace with Julie-Su when she's in her hour of need in preboot Archie! I love when he consoles Shadow during the Semi Hero-Hero (? it's been a while) ending in Shadow the Hedgehog 2005. I love that it even carries on to more recent media, such as where he is comforting Belle in IDW! I wonder if that puts a lot of pressure on him, sometimes? I think he comes across as a jerk at first, but he really does have a heart of gold.

Espio - Sexuality Headcanon: Gay Gender Headcanon: He's got some genderqueer swag.. Your chameleon is GNC af A ship I have with said character: -looks up and above- A BROTP I have with said character: Nicole and Espio getting to know eachother just really makes me smile! I think they're besties after that... Maybe with less 400-Year-Old Grandpa Floating Head Orb in the room XD ... A NOTP I have with said character: I have only ever really seen self-ships of Espio in the wild, which are all incredible. There's nothing for me to put here XD A random headcanon: I think he can still do the rainbow tone shift like in Knux' Chaotix, I think that he does it when he's sleeping. You can tell how good or bad of a dream he is having by the colour cycle. Charmy thinks this is hilarious! General Opinion over said character: I love when we get reveals that he's just a dumb goober. He IS a goober. He's really cool, and I love the whole espionage thing, and I wish he was around more. A BROTP I have with said character: Mello- MELLO, NOOO! Okay, Mello's six ft under... Who's next on the list... /brick'd But for REAL - This would never happen in a canon-adjacent way, but I really love the idea of a playdate between Charmy and Kit. I think two evils (LOVINGLY said, but Charmy ABSOLUTELY doxxes people for fun and calls them rude things over voice chat) cancel out, and they end up working on these huge projects, like building an entire scale replica of the city out of toothpicks. Charmy has a new outlet for his overbounding hyperactivity, and Kit gets to put his mind elsewhere. They both focus on their own sections and talk for hours. A NOTP I have with said character: Most ships are no-go for me with Charmy >_> I just don't like 'em. A random headcanon: I think Charmy doesn't understand that he's being rude half of the time - he's just one of those 'say it how you mean it' blunt kids who giggles too much. I think that he also doesn't really understands that he's been rude, or that people are annoyed - he's low empathy, but full of boundless energy and joy, he interacts with most people in good faith and doesn't understand why someone WOULD say something in bad faith, so he just does not get that he's in trouble until he's being scolded, then he's just left confused XD THEN he gets rude. because it's not FAIR. General Opinion over said character: I LOVE Charmy! He's one of my absolute favourites, I used to pretend to be him on the playground. I just really meshed with his hyperactivity as a kid, and I thought he was so funny XD

One minute Blue Kitty and Duck are discussing the crossword in the newspaper, the next they're viciously insulting eachother and throwing things across the room. They might be like this most of the time, but in a stick situation like a lesson going wrong they've eachother's backs. Yellow swears up and down that he's heard them talk about needing to finish signing the divorce papers but neither will admit to it.

She keeps talking about "that one time she felt really lucid and then everything was on fire and I saw a strange lady", but nobody is quite sure what that means. Ah well, it's probably nothing, right?

Im not a fan of how they did things with Eloise's character, I find it to be the peak of whit feminism. But since we are talking about it, I just want her to realise that given the time period it's ok to want children and crave all the "feminine things" she doesn't HAVE to give up her life to being a housewife, but if they do things right and let her be more empathetic and let her choose to be a wife and step mother on her own, I'd really like it. It doesn't make anyone less of a feminist if they get married and crave traditionally feminine things. Although to be fair, I just season 4 to be Benophie and let it end. I really don't want eight season of white feminism where they will make white women girlbosses and when it comes to WOC they ignore their trauma and backstory.

It is peak white feminism cause it's pure performativity and zero essence. She did some small progress in s02 when she attended a women's rights event or two and started reading actual feminist literature but I'm fully expecting s03 to end with her praising Penelope for being an independent girlboss by the finale (also no comment on the fact that she literally needed a man to spell it out to her that LW isn't the epitome of feminism, shondaland should stay the hell away from approaching social justice issues lmao).

The thing is, Eloise's story in the books is not that of a woman who initially rejects marriage, falls in love and changes her mind. It's the story of a woman who freaks the hell out because she's nearing 30 and still on the self because her best friend (who she was counting would stay on the self with her) got married. So she goes and gets herself compromised with a complete stranger and agrees to marry him because obviously playing housewife for him beats being a spinster (horror of horrors). It's...depressing to say the least. And reeks of anti feminism.

But also, sorry but why do we assume that a woman not wanting to get married is just something reactionary and she just needs to realise that conforming to traditional gender roles isn't actually that bad? I'd sure appreciate more characters who defied gender roles and choosing not to get married in the 19th century was pretty subversive. Hell, not marrying or having kids is subversive af right now for women and frawned upon by society.

In any case my issue with Eloise is that they've planned for her to end up with Philip from the beginning and still doubled down on the “I don't want to get married and have kids thing”. Which just cheapens it so much and reinforces the idea that no woman could actually not want to get married and have kids and she just needs some time to mature and think it better and she'll change her mind. Sort of like how when little girls are tomboys and adults go “its okay she'll grow out of it once she hits puberty” because God forbid she grows up to be a gnc woman!

It reduces her entire character to a damn joke and was completely unnecessary. Not to mention that the independent woman trope would've worked much better on Hyacinth imo– I can totally see her hellbent on not getting married because she doesn't want to relinquish her freedom to any man and then falling in love with Gareth and reconsidering as they build a marriage based on an equal partnership.

What is it about: A bunch of teenagers who get involved in a secret magic society and are now trying to prevent it from going to war

Who is in it:

Kaiki (he/him) - I. I'm still trying to flesh him out. He's a complicated guy. He's transgender, ambue (the word I picked for non-magic people), and became a magician kind of by accident. Currently, at Onemia there is this phenomena happening where some weird magic stuff is happening, including turning ambue into magicians. This is the character I have the hardest time with, tbh.

Arielle (they/she) - Main traits: Paficist, stoic, responsible, emotional. She is a natural Onemian (Onemia is the magical country) and works as a junior patroillueur. The Patrol is a part of Onemia’s military force and their job is to prevent the ambue world (aka non-magic world) of getting troubled by magic or finding out about Onemia. They care a lot but don’t seem like so. Tall af.

Lis (she/her) - Main traits: Chaotic dumbass, girly, cute. Lis is also ambue (non-magic) and became a magician by accident. She is albino, dyslexic, and likes lots of colorful cutesy stuff. She has a feisty personality and she masks some of her insecurities. Lis doesn’t have many difficulties with magic, and tbh, she’s great at it.

Lucy (she/it) - Main traits: Insecure, soft, smart. Lucy is ambue, and she is a very low-energy calm person. She’s trans, gnc, and sometimes lets people misgender her coz she thinks it’s nothing worth the trouble. She is the only one in the main cast who is neither Onemian nor Brazilian: She is actually Usamerican (her father is half-British and her mom is Brazilian). She grew up in the US but came to her grandmother’s house to study here in her second year of highschool. When speaking in pPortuguese she just uses she/her cuz there is no it/its in the language.

Lali (he/him) - Main traits: Flamboyant, confident, stubborn. Lali is a natural onemian like Arielle and is quite a celebrity. He is very very talented at magic and comes from a wealthy magician family. In his introdution in the storyline, Arielle is hired to protect him as a bodyguard, because the guy who originally had the job kept misgendering him and Lali is known for being hotheaded and not colaborating with people he doesn't like. He is gnc.

Simba (he/him) - Main traits: Empathetic, does what it needs to be done, quiet, intimidating, quick. Simba is the prince of Onemia. I have a hard time defining his family lore but his mom is the Grand-Countess, kind of like the queen of Onemia, and his other mother is an important politican. Technically Onemia is not a monarchy and the charge is not passed foward for heirs BUT to be the Gran-Countex you have to have a lot of things in your curriculum like having political and military training and the current ruler always make sure that their heir has the necessary formation, so it isn't uncommon for a singke family to stay in power for a couple regenerations, as it is the current case. Simba is supposed to be the third ruler on his bloodline and he is on a magic military academy for his formation. He is also not very fleshed out.

Secondary characters:

Giulia (she/her) - A nice girl who is Arielle's coworker and queerplatonic partner. She is like. A sunshine. Patrollieur. I will flesh her out better later but I love her.

Luna (she/her) - Kaiki's sister. They're around the same age and have a love/hate relationship. Sarcastic, seems confident, but actually is very troubled.

Tatiana (she/her) - Luna and Kaiki's older sister. She's on college and is autistic. She cares a lot about her siblings and usually tries to prevent them from getting at eachother's throats.

Estella (she/her) - Their younger sister. She is still a toddler and loves puzzles.

Aunt Alice (she/her) - The sibling's aunt and guardian. Their parents are divorced and the kids ended up living with her some years ago. She is a nice and caring guardian. Mostly.

Clarisse (she/her) - Tatiana's classmate. They're best friends and lots of people think they're dating.

Oh, Malcolm and Spriggan. Oh. Oh? Version of Apostle where the creature in the island is the Spriggan? Malcolm spends his time dedicating himself to the Spriggan, who demands the blood sacrifice? Malcolm, desperate, sacrificing himself to the Spriggan?

I do believe I've written something ages ago with Spriggan meeting Malcolm, but I like your idea better!

The Spriggan needs the lost energy of his ship found in the new people of the island, but Malcolm was there from the beginning, has the energy in him too. The Spriggan doesn't want to drain him. At least... not too much of him. Blood sacrifices for the 'Goddess' (cause all Tens are gnc af on this blog), to appease, for life for the community.

But life can be taken away too...

I love the idea that the Spriggan makes Malcolm a bit like himself, so he doesn't have to die but can still be of use.

Why Is Quark Hot?

It's been driving me mad since I first watched the show. I'd seen Quark before on TNG, loved his cameos, but it wasn't until halfway through season two of DS9 that I let myself notice that Quark is hot. Logically, I feel like he should not be hot! He is a freaky little alien capitalist! But since I'm not alone, here's some reasons why. Warning: long post, I put way too much thought into this.

We like him so we're biased

This is the reason I see most often in fandom. We like Quark, so we find him hot. I think there's truth here - personally I started finding him hot during the episode Profit and Loss, where Quark takes the moral high ground and puts himself in danger to protect someone he loves. Maybe we're just used to Quark? Our brains say "hey that's Quark! We like Quark!" and some wires get crossed until we find him pretty. I think there's more to it though.

2. He's GNC AF

I'm not really talking about Profit and Lace, though I do like the episode for the most part. Quark learns pretty quickly how to be comfortable while presenting female, but he's also been GNC in other ways before. His taste in women tends to be strong, capable people who could easily slit his throat such as Natima Lang, Grilka, and Pel - far from the Ferengi ideal of a nude submissive housewife. His relationship with Pel before she came out as female, as well as whatever he's got going on with Odo, and even his attraction to Dax all makes him read as queer. He exhibits charitable impulses, regularly acts on them, even to the point that he loses profit himself - far from what you'd expect of a "true" Ferengi male. That might seem more of a culture thing than a gender thing, but especially since we're talking about aliens with very clearly defined gender roles here, I'm gonna say that gender Is culture. By subverting those roles, Quark reads as gender non conforming, which is - in my opinion - very sexy of him

3. Clear, sexy voice

Yes I know how deranged I sound. I do maintain that Quark's voice is attractive in general (especially when he's angry about something, like his "The line has to be drawn here" from The Dogs of War, and honestly all of his speeches. He's a good speaker), but I specifically mean in contrast to other Ferengi. All Ferengi have big teeth, and for most actors that creates an interesting speech effect. Quark also has this, but to a lesser extent than characters like Zek, Leck, and Brunt. Armin Shimmerman acts through the prosthetics very well, and it makes Quark easier to listen to than other Ferengi. Therefore, if you approach media like I do and meet each character on their own level, then Quark comes across as clear and well spoken - attractive qualities.

4. Confident

Look at all those other Ferengi males in their lobe enhancing headpieces. Quark is too confident for that. This could read as another GNC thing, but enough other Ferengi men forgo the headpiece, at least on occasion, for me to give it its own point. Quark knows he looks good, knows his lobes are big, knows he's a Ferengi without needing extra signifiers. Again, if you look at Quark As A Ferengi, and contrast him with the rest of his culture, he stands out as something special. Quark might not come across as pretty to other Ferengi, I don't know, but to me? To this biased human? Hot!

5. Wears makeup

From a human perspective, it looks like all Ferengi are wearing nail polish, and that does add to Quark's general sex appeal, but here I'm talking about something that sets him apart from other Ferengi, males and females - his red eyeshadow. I'd call it another GNC thing but he's never called out on it by other Ferengi men, so that's probably a human perspective, but it does show that Quark cares about his appearance and makes the effort to make himself look special. And it suits him! Man knows his colour palette.

6. Sharp dresser

Just look at the detail in his outfits! This goes for most Ferengi, they're a remarkably fashionable species, and it makes Quark look so put together! Look how cute he is in his little suits. I have nothing more to say on this, just look at him.

7. He's tall

Again, Ferengi standards, Quark has a few inches on other Ferengi. Part of that's his posture - most Ferengi tend to crouch while Quark stands tall and proud - but also he wouldn't seem hugely short by human standards if he wasn't in the show populated solely by giants. He'd be average on Voyager. I'm not saying that short kings aren't hot, but it makes him noticeable. It makes him special, compared to other Ferengi. It adds to his overall appeal.

8. We're told he's hot

Quark fucks. Canonically, Quark fucks. Quark fucks Cardassian fugitives, Klingon nobility, Ferengi businessmen (he also goes skinny dipping on Risa with Dr Bashir that one time, which frankly is its whole own post). Can you blame an audience for noticing, for wanting to get in on that? I am heavily biased, but I say we are not the freaks here. Quark's hot.

i've watched two entire episodes of Shikimori's Not Just A Cutie and it is cute and good yes but also how it handles gender roles

shikimori and izumi both have that lil gnc spice and you can very much tell it's what attracts them to each other

like obviously you have izumi's freak-outs whenever shikimori saves him. he thinks shikimori being athletic and strong and determined is Hot As Hell. Meanwhile shikimori's freak-outs tend to be when izumi praises her or cheers her on, like in the volleyball game or when they're bowling. She just Cannot Handle The Cute.

and this is very interesting to me because what they love in each other is what they want to be.

Shikimori is very self concious of her demeanor. Often she expresses a desire to be cute but what she thinks cute looks like is at odds with how she is. Like how she is afraid of "coming on too strong" or the bowling game when Nekozaki tells her losing would be "cute" and she considers it, until izumi ends up failing instead, thereby slotting him in the cute position she wanted.

The other way around, too, izumi often expresses a desire to be stronger, i.e to be more masculine. He admires Shikimori for her strength but is also jealous of it, yet due to his bad luck he never manages to appear strong, instead slotting Shikimori into the protective position he wanted.

There's also a lot of genderbent anime tropes? Shikimori is the knight in shining armor, yet in episode 2, when she sees izumi hanging out with inuzaka more than her, she takes on the role of the jealous one in a manner typically associated with the jealous boyfriend (ykno, cool stare, "he's mine", protective in a collected way opposite the typically more explosive jealous girlfriend trope).

In the same episode, izumi's cheer fires on shikimori to win the volleyball game, when izumi takes the role of the usually supportive girlfriend. Hell, he even fantasizes about this exact trope, with his imagination having him bring Shikimori a cold drink.

Both of them have the traditional association of masculine = strong / feminine = weak and because of this association they feel out of place and crave the inclination towards either the other has. Their individual presentation (through for example clothing) is in this way what they want to be, but again their behaviours lead to it not being what they're seen as.

Again the irony is that what makes them individually feel bad is what the other thinks is hot as hell. A solution would either be to sever the link between behaviour and presentation they have and get over their complexes that way, or let go of the need to be what's expected of their gender. Either way, these two bozos should just talk about it, but this is a romcom. What do i even expect.

They both have a strong awareness of expectations placed on gender and it is that exact awareness that draws their attention to how they just don't fit.

TL;DR they're straight as hell but also gnc af do you understand

character ask game with botw link?

One aspect that I love: I really love how purposefully androgynous they made this version of Link. With every other version of the character all of their voice lines consist of wordless yelling and stuff like that (aside from WW Link's meow), but botw Link laughs and has a noticeably lighter/ higher voice than the rest of them. Not to mention his character model is very short and made to make him look gnc af. also there's a whole major part of his quest that relies on him being able to pass as a girl and he blushes when he's called cute in the clothes BC IT'S NOT DEMEANING TO DRESS FEMININELY!!!

One aspect that I wish more people understood: I think people don't think hard enough about his lack of emotions in the cutscenes, they literally explain why he's like that, why he doesn't talk and everything. He's supposed to be seen as cold and unfeeling because it shows how different he is after the Shrine of Resurrection. He has snarky dialogue and he gets excited to cook and he can shield surf when before the Calamity it's so obvious that he's this soldier trained from childhood to reject his emotions and do what's needed of him.

One (or more) headcanons I have: There is no way that this little dude is cishet. I refuse to believe it. But I can't decide on my favorite gender headcanon for him but I usually default to him being genderfluid. I do really love ftm and mtf trans headcanons and nonbinary headcanons for him too. I think he deserves all of the gender. I also like to put him on the aroace spectrum, but at that point I'm mostly projecting. I just think it's funny that in game there are so many girls who are attracted to him and he just... doesn't understand at all. Like Mipha and Zelda and Paya and the arrow lady all write in their diaries about him and I think it would be fun if he just didn't get the hint at all.

One character I'd love to see them interact with: Outside of his game? I think he and Midna would commit crimes together and it would be funny. Also I really like it when things like fanart and fics include TP Link because he's there as Wolf Link and I think it would've been nice if he could turn Hylian in the game to teach him things but instead he's a dog who kills everything that he sees and gives me a heart attack while distracting guardians. This dog makes me way more anxious when fighting bigger monsters.

One character I wish they'd interact with/ interact with more: Riju, 100%. I think they should've added the fact that he had a family to the game including a little sister who Riju subconsciously reminds him of so it would be nice if they had added some big bro moments with him. You know that they would get along to the detriment of Buliara.

One or more headcanons I have that involve them and one other character: Him and Zelda have the same amount of cryptid nerd energy. Like they both had some before the Calamity, she tried to make him eat a frog and he literally ate rocks and kicked the asses of full grown knights at the age of four, but Post-Calamity? after he had been resurrected and she had spent a hundred years fused with the goddess? They're both fully weird now and they don't care what other people think of them at all. They also have different flavors of inhuman-ness. Like hers is more divine and ancient and powerful and his is more wild and monstrous and new. If that makes sense. Idk he's the nature spirit that connects with animals and strange creatures and plants and she's connected to the goddess so she has dreams of the future and sees everything differently than everyone else. They're weird and its super obvious.
